Crossing blocks of Mentha arvensis cv Kalka (menthol mint without carvone) and Mentha spicata cv Neera (carvone mint without menthol) in alternate rows (2:1::Kalka:Neera), and pollination of florets of Kalka with that from Neera, yielded a carvone-rich variant among the open-pollinated seedlings. The variant possesses the hybrid phenotype, including the vigorous M. arvensis growth habit and the synthesis of rich oil aroma supplemented with a menthol tinge (carvone 64%–76% against 58% for the normal carvone mint cv Neera), and thus a novel combination of the essential oil. Chromosome counts and random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis confirmed that this spearmint variant, designated as the variety Neerkalka, is a unique interspecific hybrid (2n=5x=60) of M. arvensis cv Kalka (2n=8x=96) and M. spicata cv Neera (2n=2x=24). Vegetative multiplication of the hybrid was facilitated by its underground sucker-reproducing ability which is otherwise absent in spearmints. The per cent improvement in the variant ranged from 31–97 for herbage yield and 95–317 for oil yield over the standard spearmint varieties (MSS-5, Arka and Neera), with per hectare oil yields of 125.0 kg, 139.0 kg and 65.0 kg, respectively. The brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), Halyomorpha halys (Stål), native to Northeastern Asia, is a serious invasive pest in the United States, Canada, Switzerland, Germany and France. Several common essential oils and their compositions were tested against BMSBs as potential repellents. All the tested individual essential oils and a ternary oil blend showed significant repellency to both BMSB nymphs and adults. Clove oil, lemongrass oil, spearmint oil, ylang‐ylang oil, and the ternary oil mixture (clove, lemongrass and spearmint) almost completely blocked attraction of BMSBs to the stink bug attractant‐baited traps; whereas wintergreen oil, geranium oil, pennyroyal oil and rosemary oil resulted in 60–85% trap catch reductions. Over 20 BMSB antennally active compounds were identified from SPME headspace samples of the eight repellent essential oils using GC‐EAD and GC‐MS techniques. Among the synthetic EAD‐active compounds tested in the field, eugenol, l‐carvone, p/l‐menthone, pulegone, methyl salicylate, trans/cis‐citral, methyl benzoate and β‐caryophyllene significantly reduced trap catches of BMSBs by 72–99%; these compounds are likely responsible for the repellency of their corresponding essential oils. Surprisingly, a synthetic mixture of the predacious spined soldier bug (SSB) [Podisus maculiventris (Say)] aggregation pheromone (trans‐2‐hexenal, α‐terpineol and benzyl alcohol) also showed a significant inhibition of BMSB response to its attractants. These repellent essential oils and their active compounds, as well as the synthetic SSB pheromone, are potentially useful as part of an efficient, environmentally sound semiochemical‐based IPM programme to combat this serious invasive stink bug.  相似文献

Transformed root cultures of Anethum graveolens were induced by inoculation of aseptically grown seedlings with Agrobacterium rhizogenes carrying plasmid pRi 1855. The main component of the essential oils from the fruits and from the roots of the parent plant was carvone, whereas -phellandrene and apiole were dominant in the oil from, respectively, the aerial parts and the hairy roots. The essential oils from the fruits, aerial parts and roots of the parent plant were at 2%, 0.3% and 0.06% (v/w), respectively, but only 0.02% (v/w) in the hairy root cultures. Growth of the hairy root cultures reached 600 mg dry wt/50 ml medium after 50 days. The essential oil composition did not change significantly during their growth.  相似文献

To date, plantlet culture has not been explored as a means to obtain secondary metabolites in vitro. However, plantlets readily produce desirable secondary metabolites, which may not be produced in cell suspension or callus cultures. To optimize plantlet growth in vitro, the influences of various physical environments on the growth (fresh weight), morphogenesis (leaf, root, and shoot number), and volatile carbon metabolites (i.e. monoterpene, (−)-carvone) of Mentha spicata L. (spearmint) plants were studied. The carvone content in different portions of sterile plantlets was analyzed. Carvone was only produced from the foliar regions of cultured plantlets and was absent in the callus and roots. The influence of physical support (e.g., agar, glass gravel, liquid, platform or sponge), frequency of media replacement, and culture vessel capacity on spearmint plantlets growth and carvone production was tested. A comparative study was conducted testing the growth, morphogenesis, and secondary metabolism occurring with three different spearmint cultivars grown in either culture tubes containing 25 ml agar medium or in an automated plant culture system (APCS; a sterile hydroponics system) employing a 1-l medium reservoir. Increasing the number of media immersions (4, 8, 12 or 16 immersions d−1) of plantlets growing in the APCS increased growth and morphogenesis responses. Generally, higher culture growth rates resulted in lower carvone treatment−1 (mg carvone g-FW−1); however, overall total carvone ((mg carvone g-FW−1) × g culture FW) increased because of the production of greater biomass obtained per vessel.  相似文献

The effects of application of two arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi Glomus macrocarpum and G. fasciculatum on shoot biomass and concentration of essential oil in Anethum graveolens L. and Trachyspermum ammi (Linn.) Sprague fruits were evaluated. Results revealed significant variation in effectiveness of the two AM fungal species. AM fungal inoculation in general improved the growth of the plants. On mycorrhization, the concentration of essential oil increased up to 90% in dill and 72% in carum over their respective controls. Glomus macrocarpum was more effective than G. fasciculatum in enhancing the oil concentration. The constituents of the essential oils were characterized by gas liquid chromatography. The levels of limonene and carvone were enhanced in essential oil obtained from G. macrocarpum-inoculated dill plants, while G. fasciculatum inoculation resulted in a higher level of thymol in carum.  相似文献

The genus Lavandula is known for its different uses in traditional medicine. This study is interested in the chemical composition of Lavandulapedunculata subsp.atlantica (Braun‐Blanq. ) Romo as well as evaluating its antibacterial potential against multi‐resistant strains. The analysis of Lavandulaatlantica essential oil (LAEO) allows the identification of 47 components representing 93.6 % of all identified. The main constituent of LAEO was camphor (50.4 %), followed by fenchone (14.1 %) and camphene (5.6 %). The antibacterial assays revealed that LAEO was active against all the studied bacteria. A preliminary study of the relationship between certain terpenoids and antibacterial activity was also carried out in order to note the compound(s) that are responsible for LAEO's antibacterial activity. This study showed that the activity of the essential oil may be due to the presence of certain minor compounds such as carvone, considering the presence of the synergistic effect between the essential oil.  相似文献

The distribution of Salvia pomifera subsp. pomifera (Cretan sage) on the island of Crete is presented. The essential oils of six populations scattered on the island are studied. The essential oil content varies from 2.1–4.2%, whereas the main oil components were in all cases α- and/or β-thujone (27.4–72.3% and 7.1–40.8%, respectively). The comparison of our results to literature data, suggest that S. pomifera can be distinguished from S. fruticosa (Greek sage), on the basis of its essential oil composition.  相似文献

Caraway (Carum carvi L.) is a medicinal and aromatic plant; its seeds (fruits) are used as spice and they contain essential oils. We hypothesized that by collecting caraway oil at different time points during the extraction process, we could obtain oil fractions with distinct chemical composition. A hydrodistillation time (HDT) study was conducted to test the hypothesis. The caraway seed oil fractions were collected at eight different HDT (at 0 – 2, 2 – 7, 7 – 15, 15 – 30, 30 – 45, 45 – 75, 75 – 105, and 105 – 135 min). Additionally, a non‐stop HD for 135 min was conducted as a control. Most of the oil was eluted early in the HD process. The non‐stop HDT treatment yielded 2.76% oil by weight. Of the 24 essential oil constituents, limonene (77 – 19% of the total oil) and carvone (20 – 79%) were the major ones. Other constituents included myrcene (0.72 – 0.16%), trans‐carveol (0.07 – 0.39%), and β‐caryophyllene (0.07 – 0.24%). Caraway seed oil with higher concentration of limonene can be obtained by sampling oil fractions early in HD process; conversely, oil with high concentration of carvone can be obtained by excluding the fractions eluted early in the HD process. We demonstrated a method of obtaining caraway seed oil fractions with various and unique composition. These novel oil fractions with unique composition are not commercially available and could have much wider potential uses, and also target different markets compared to the typical caraway essential oil.  相似文献

The composition of the essential oils obtained from the leaves and the flowers of Achillea ligustica (Asteraceae) growing in Sicily has been studied. The main constituents of the leaves were 4-terpineol (19.3%), carvone (8.9%), γ-terpinene (7.2%) and β-phellandrene (6.8%). 4-terpineol (12.0%), carvone (10.0%), and β-phellandrene (5.4%), along with linalool (20.4%) and cedrol (4.3%) were detected in the flower’s oil. Furthermore, the antimicrobial activity of the essential oils and of some of the main constituents were assayed on bacteria and fungi. In memory of Prof. Ivano Morelli (1940–2005)  相似文献

Plant essential oils from 20 plant species were tested for their insecticidal activity against larvae of Lycoriella ingenua (Dufour) (Diptera: Sciaridae) by using a fumigation bioassay. Good insecticidal activity (>90%) against larvae of L. ingenua was achieved with essential oils of caraway seed Carum carvi (L.)], lemongrass [Cymbopogon citratus (D.C.) Stapf.], mandarine (Citrus reticulate Blanco), nutmeg (Myristica fragrans Houtt), cade (Juniperus oxycedrus L.), spearmint (Mentha spicata L.), cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.), and thyme red [Thymus vulgaris (L.)] oils at 30 X 10-3 mg/1 air. Among them, caraway seed, spearmint, cumin, and thyme red essential oils were highly effective against L. ingenua at 20 x 10(-3) mg/ml air. Analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry led to identification of 4, 9, 8, and 17 compounds from caraway seed, spearmint, cumin, and thyme red oils, respectively. These compounds were tested individually for their insecticidal activities against larvae of L. ingenua, and compared with the toxicity of dichlorvos. Carvacrol, thymol, linalool, cuminaldehyde, p-cymen, terpinen-4-ol, and carvone was effective at 10 x 10(-3) mg/l. The insecticidal activity of dichlorvos was 60% at 10 x 10(-3) mg/ml. Effects of four selected plant essential oils on growth of oyster mushroom, Pleurotus ostreatus, also were investigated.  相似文献

This research was conducted to evaluate acaricidal effects of some plant essences on Varroa mites and the possibility of their usage for Varroa control. First, live Varroa mites were obtained from adult honeybees with CO2 in a newly designed apparatus. Thyme, savory, rosemary, marjoram, dillsun and lavender essences at concentrations of 2 and 1g/100g (w/w), caused a mite mortality rate of more than 97% and 95%, respectively. Also spearmint at 2g/100g was able to kill more than 97% of Varroa mites. When sprayed on worker honeybees infected with mites, thyme, savory, spearmint and dillsun essences at 2g/100g (w/w) caused 43–58% Varroa mortality. Toxicity of thyme, savory and spearmint essences for worker honeybees was not significantly different from that of controls (acetone and water), but dillsun essence caused 12% honeybee mortality. These results showed that essences of thyme, savory and spearmint have acaricidal properties that could be used for controlling Varroa in honeybee colonies. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Carvone, the principal component of spearmint oil, induces biodegradation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) by Arthrobacter sp. strain B1B. This study investigated the effectiveness of the repeated application of carvone-induced bacteria for bioremediation of Aroclor-1242-contaminated soil. Control treatments compared a single inoculation of carvone-induced cells, repeated applications of noninduced cells, and repeated applications of cell-free carvone/fructose medium. The results showed that repeated application of carvone-induced bacteria was the most effective treatment for mineralizing PCB, resulting in 27 ± 6% degradation of Aroclor 1242 after 9 weeks; whereas a single application of cells resulted in no significant degradation. Addition of cell-free, carvone/fructose medium resulted in 10% degradation of PCB, which suggests that this treatment stimulated biodegradation of PCB by the indigenous microflora. The di- and trichlorobiphenyls were the most readily degraded congeners. More highly chlorinated congeners, which had been previously shown to be degraded in liquid culture, were not substantially degraded in soil, indicating that low bioavailability may have limited their degradation. With the development of new technology, which permits automated in situ fermentation and delivery of degrader microorganisms, the repeated application of carvone-induced bacteria may facilitate bioremediation of PCB-contaminated soils. We studied the influence of vegetation growing on red wood ant, Formica polyctena, hills and its removal, by cutting, on the temperature and moisture content of the nests. Vegetation was removed from half of nests (n = 10) in June and August. Generally, ant hills were small (0.1–1.1 m3) and their daily temperature fluctuations and moisture (16–38%) were low. The centre temperature of ant hills was positively correlated with ambient air temperature. Daily temperatures peaked at 13:00 and slowly decreased until 09:00 then increased again until 13:00. Nest moisture content was not related to nest volume. All the ant hills were covered with Reed Grass (Calamagrostis arundinacea) that grows through nests and reaches about 185–1085 g/dcm2 of dry matter. Dry vegetation matter (g/dcm2 of anthill surface) was the same on cut and uncut nests as well because all ant hills were under long-term management (vegetation removal) for at least 10 years. Although vegetation removal did not result in an immediate increase in the temperature of denuded ant hills removal did results in higher daily and night temperatures during the July-September period. The moisture content of nests with undisturbed and intact vegetation was the same. The dry matter content of vegetation strongly affected their moisture content. However, temperature at the inside centre of nests decreased as vegetation dry matter increased, i.e. there was a statistically negative correlation between temperature and moisture. The results support removing grass as a suitable management tool to facilitate the survival of wood ants. Received 30 December 2007; revised 22 April 2008; accepted 10 June 2008.  相似文献

The composition of the essential oil isolated from Achillea millefolium L. ssp. millefolium cell suspension cultures was analysed by GC and GC-MS. The yield of the oil obtained by hydrodistillation or a simultaneous distillation -extraction of these cultures, harvested at days 8–10 (end of exponential phase), was 0.001 % (w/w). The analysis of the volatiles showed the presence of thirteen components; monoterpenes amounted to 5%, sesquiterpene hydrocarbons attained 40%, while eugenol, demethoxyencecalin and two unidentified compounds amounted to 45% of the total oil. Several methods were tested in an attempt to increase the essential oil production by the cultures: growth on solid medium, growth in light, use of a different culture medium, elicitation with cellulase or yeast extract, and growth in a two-phase system. Of the different methods tested, the growth in B5+ medium with Miglyol 812 led to the highest essential oil yield (0.002%, w/w), and resulted in a more diverse oil composition.  相似文献

Effects of salinity and cutting on the development of Phragmites australis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effects of increased salinity and cutting the above ground biomass on the growth of Phragmites australis were evaluated by investigating four experimental reed stands grown in outdoor tanks. Two stands were treated with 30 salinity and the other two stands with freshwater; one stand of each treatment was cut to 20 cm during the second growing season. Growth conditions were observed until all the plants were dead at the end of the second year. The number of shoots emerged from the freshwater-treated stand was about 70% higher than that of the saltwater-treated stand. The number of shoots emerged from cut plant stands were markedly lower than uncut stands. The average shoot height was negatively affected by salinity and shoots that emerged after cutting further decreased in height. The average number of leaves on a shoot was not significantly affected by salinity, but reduced by cutting in both treatments. Leaf length, width and the distance between leaves were decreased by both salinity and cutting. In the freshwater-treated uncut stand more than 50% of the shoots formed panicles, but this proportion was reduced to 6% by salinity, to 15% by cutting, and to 0% by the combination of salinity and cutting. This study showed again that salinity reduces the growth of aboveground components. The growth, however, was most severely retarded by cutting combined with salinity, which has many implications for better management of P. australis stands.  相似文献
