Four aged Madison County, New York farm ponds were selected to see if various treatments could be used to restore the water quality. One pond was untreated and used as a control; another pond was partially drained and exposed to the drying and oxidizing effects of the air over the fall and winter; the other two ponds were drained and the accumulated sediment removed by bulldozing. In these latter two ponds, Chara vulgaris vegetation was inoculated following the restoration process. C. vulgaris growth rapidly became the dominant producer where this inoculation was accomplished in the fall of 1976, and it is expected that the other pond will also become a C. vulgaris pond in 1978 — after its oogonia have undergone the requisite winter dormancy period.Early C. vulgaris growth was found to be associated with clear water conditions and lessened phytoplankton growth; short, bushy, light-inhibited growth by the algae stabilized the bottom against wind-caused turbidity because of its rhizoidal growth within the substrate. Pioneer C. vulgaris growth was also found to be highly productive, significantly lowering the pond's CO2 readings.Investigators of aquatic systems are cautioned to be cognizant of the effect of epiphytic growth on successional events in such environments. Such epiphytes are surely important, if not prime, causes of the demise of various aquatic macrophytes. The partial draining and exposing of a pond over the fall and winter did not yield significantly improved water conditions.  相似文献

Successional events of aquatic vegetation in a farm pond were studied, after application of simazine. After decay of the higher plants, phytoplankton did not dominate, instead herbicide-resistant seeds and subsurface structures of Potamogeton foliosus developed. Benthic algae covered and stabilized the bottom. Following stabilization, the water cleared and Chara vulgaris growth resumed wherever the substrate was firm.Suggestions are made as to how a pond can be managed to maintain the desired pioneer vegetation of Ch. vulgaris.

Chara fragilis and Chara vulgaris were grown in a natural medium containing sodium phosphate at different levels. The H2PO4 ions, at a concentration of 2 mmol/l, are beneficial for the growth of Chara fragilis. The toxic effect of H2PO4 appears at 5 mmol/l. Tolerance of Chara vulgaris is inferior. The phosphorus content of the plants were somewhat higher by increasing concentration of the medium, the insoluble calcium content was not enhanced.

The macroscopic algae Characeae are usually assumed to occur in waterbodies supplied by groundwater with low phosphate content, but the indicative value of the species is seldom defined in bibliography. Former braided channels of the Rhône river are supplied with groundwater originating from the main channel (seepage) or from hillslope aquifer. The aim of the present paper was to determine if it possible to use the Characeae as indicators of physicochemical characteristies of water in order to assess the origin of groundwater supplying former river channels. Four former braided channels of the Rhône River colonized by Characeae were investigated, and the physico-chemical characteristics of i) the channels, ii) the groundwater and iii) the river were measured over a period of several months. Species are arranged along a gradient of conductivity, alkalinity, ammonium and phosphate content of the water. Charophyte species can indicate the origin of groundwater, either seepage or hillslope nutrient-poor aquifer, and integrate both the average value of the chemical parameter, and their variations. C. hispida occurs in a nutrient-poor channel mainly supplied by highly calcareous groundwater coming from hillslope aquifer. Chara major has requirements close to those of C. hispida, but is more tolerant to periodic inputs of nutrients. C. vulgaris and N. syncarpa both tolerate mesotrophic waters originating from both hillslope aquifer and seepage, and C. globularis is associated to a channel mainly supplied by mesotrophic to eutrophic river seepage.  相似文献

Phytoplankton bloom in commercial shrimp ponds using green-water technology   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Phytoplankton community composition, density, and succession were studied in tropical commercial ponds with euryhaline tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon Fabricius) using green-water technology at two different stocking densities [T1 10 post-larvae (PL) m−2 and T2 15 PL m−2] in one grow-out season (May–October 2005) in Leganes, Iloilo, Philippines. Weekly qualitative and quantitative analyses of phytoplankton were done along with physicochemical analyses of the pond waters. A total of 103 taxa belonging to nine different algal classes were observed. Of these classes, the Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae and Bacillariophyceae constituted the great bulk of the phytoplankton population. The two treatments did not show any significant differences in the growth pattern of phytoplankton over time and in their diversity indices. Although T2 had higher values than T1 for algal density and species diversity index, the differences were not significant. The mean Shannon-Wiener diversity index for T2 (1.56) was higher than T1 (1.39) but not significantly different. Both treatment ponds had Chlorophyceae as the dominant algae during the initial culture phase [0–35 days of culture (DOC)], which coincided with high salinity (average = 35.67 ppt) and relatively high N:P ratios (average = 1.95). The chlorophycean bloom was made up mostly of Nannochloropsis sp. The cyanophycean bloom occurred towards the final culture phase (84–112/126 DOC) when there was low salinity (average = 19.5 ppt) and relatively high N:P ratios (average 2.01). A short diatom bloom occurred in T2 at the same time that the N:P ratios rose dramatically to 4.2 at 42 DOC. Among the eight physicochemical parameters examined, positive correlations were noted among alkalinity, ammonium-nitrogen, nitrite-nitrogen and phytoplankton community. High species diversity index and species richness could have enhanced the stability of favorable Nannochloropsis blooms, especially in T2. No differences were noted between the two treatments in terms of the shrimp’s biomass at harvest time (T1 = 28.9 and T2 = 29.4 g fresh wt per shrimp), although a significantly higher survival rate (P < 0.05) was observed in T1 (97%) than in T2 (56%). Both treatments were able to control the occurrence of the luminous bacterium Vibrio harveyi. Three short-term laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate allelopathic effects of a mixture of Chara globularis var. globularis Thuillier and Chara contraria var. contraria A. Braun ex Kützing on three different green algae. Single phytoplankton species were exposed to filtered water originating from charophyte cultures. Phytoplankton growth was monitored by determination of chlorophyll concentrations in batch cultures. The change in chlorophyll concentration during the experiments was analysed with a logistic growth model, resulting in an estimate of the exponential growth rate and the duration of the lag phase of the single green algae. The results indicate allelopathic effects of Chara on the growth of the green algae Selenastrum capricornutum Printz and Chlorella minutissima Fott et Nováková, whereas Scenedesmus obliquus (Turpin) Kützing did not seem to be affected. The exponential growth rate of S. capricornutum decreased 7% in the presence of water from a charophyte culture, while the growth rate of C. minutissima decreased with 3%. The allelopathic effect of Chara did not increase when the green alga C. minutissima was P-limited. The effect of Chara was different when young sprouts were used. With young sprouts the duration of the lag phase of C. minutissima was extended (25%), whilst for old plants the growth rate of this green alga decreased. Although the inhibiting effect of charophytes on specific phytoplankton species is rather small, the differential sensitivity of the species to Chara might influence the composition and biomass of phytoplankton communities in the field.  相似文献

The role of omnivorous crayfish in littoral communities   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5

Large omnivorous predators may play particularly important roles determining the structure of communities because of their broad diets and simultaneous effects on multiple trophic levels. From June 2001 to June 2002 we quantified community structure and ecosystem attributes of six newly establishing freshwater ponds (660 m2 each) after populations of omnivorous crayfish (Orconectes virilis) were introduced to three of the ponds. Crayfish preyed heavily on fish eggs in this experiment, which reduced recruitment of young-of-year fish. This effect indirectly enhanced zooplankton biomass in crayfish ponds. Phytoplankton abundance exhibited a more complex pattern and was probably influenced by non-trophic (e.g., bioturbation) effects of crayfish. Peak dissolved oxygen levels were lower in the crayfish ponds indicating that they had lower primary production: respiration ratios. Metaphytic algae were strongly affected by crayfish presence; filamentous greens quickly disappeared and the blue-green Gleotrichia (a less preferred food item) eventually dominated the composition in crayfish ponds. Chara vulgaris and vascular macrophytes established 34% cover in control ponds by June 2002, but were not able to establish in crayfish ponds. Two important periphyton herbivores (tadpoles and gastropods) were absent or significantly reduced in the crayfish ponds, but periphyton differences were temporally variable and not easily explained by a simple trophic cascade (i.e., crayfish—snails and tadpoles—periphyton). Our results indicate that crayfish can have dramatic direct and indirect impacts on littoral pond communities via feeding links with multiple trophic levels (i.e., fish, invertebrates, and plants) and non-trophic activities (bioturbation). Although the effects of omnivorous crayfish on littoral communities can be large, their complex effects do not fit neatly into current theories about trophic interactions or freshwater community structure.  相似文献

1. Filamentous green algae (FGA) may represent an alternative state in high‐nutrient shallow temperate lakes. Furthermore, a clear water state is sometimes associated with the dominance of FGA; however, the mechanisms involved remain uncertain. 2. We hypothesised that FGA may promote a clear water state by directly suppressing phytoplankton growth, mostly via the release of allelochemicals, and that this interaction may be affected by temperature. 3. We examined the relationships between FGA, phytoplanktonic chlorophyll a concentrations and zooplankton in a series of mesocosms (2.8 m3) mimicking enriched shallow ponds now and in a future warmer climate (0 and c. 5 °C above ambient temperatures). We then tested the potential allelopathic effects of FGA (Cladophora sp. and Spirogyra sp.) on phytoplankton using several short‐term microcosms and laboratory experiments. 4. Mesocosms with FGA evidenced lower phytoplanktonic chlorophyll a concentrations than those without. Zooplankton and zooplankton : phytoplankton biomass ratios did not differ between mesocosms with and without FGA, suggesting that grazing was not responsible for the negative effects on phytoplanktonic biomass (chlorophyll a). 5. Our field microcosm experiments demonstrated that FGA strongly suppressed the growth of natural phytoplankton at non‐limiting nutrient conditions and regardless of phytoplankton initial concentrations or micronutrients addition. Furthermore, we found that the negative effect of FGA on phytoplankton growth increased up to 49% under high incubation temperatures. The experiment performed using FGA filtrates confirmed that the inhibitory effect of FGA on phytoplankton may be attributed to allelochemicals. 6. Our results suggest that FGA control of phytoplankton growth may be an important mechanism for stabilising clear water in shallow temperate lakes dominated by FGA and that FGA may play a larger role when lakes get warmer.  相似文献

Till about 1965 a rich characean community occurred in the shallow peat lake Botshol with six species of which the rare Nitellopsis obtusa and Chara major dominated at many sites. In the period 1980–1988 characean biomass strongly decreased and only two species, Chara globularis and C. connivens, remained in small populations at a few localities. Of the macrophyte Najas marina also some small populations remained, while the aquatic moss Fontinalis antipyretica and the filamentous alga Vaucheria dichotoma predominated at many sites. These phenomena may have been due to eutrophication by the input of polluted water. This process of impoverishment was stopped by restoration measures in 1989, resulting in a lower phosphorus concentration (ca 25 µg l-1) and a higher water transparency. Immediately after these measures the Characeae community increased in abundance and number of species. During the summer of 1990, and especially 1991, a spectacular growth occurred of Chara connivens. C. connivens was often accompanied by C. major. Other species with scattered occurrence were C. aculeolata, C. aspera, C. contraria and C. globularis. The reasons for the shift in dominance from Nitellopsis obtusa to Chara connivens are discussed. From growth experiments evidence was obtained that neither the recent higher chloride level, nor the lowered phosphate concentration were the main factors for the domination of Chara connivens.  相似文献

We surveyed (Oct. 1991–Sept. 1992) a 16.5-km-long irrigation canal in Al-Kharj City, for its water chemistry, and Charophyte periodicity and density. Marked differences occurred between the origin of a cave-lake, and the final discharge. Six species, Chara globularis, C. vulgaris f. contraria, C. vulgaris var. gymnophylla, C. vulgaris var. longibracteata, C. zeylanica, C. zeylanica var. diaphana f. oerstediana heavily encrust, as opposed to C. benthamii and C. fibrosa. The most widespread were Chara zeylanica and C. benthamii. Chara zeylanica dominated station IV for most of the study period, and ousted all its competitors, such that a 100% monospecific stand was observed here between January and February 1992. The second abundant was Chara benthamii (44%, station II). All Charophytes were seen in the month of November and December 1991, suggesting a luxuriant growth in winter. The water was calcareous, with a high amount of Mg++ (% MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGqiVu0Je9sqqrpepC0xbbL8F4rqqrFfpeea0xe9Lq-Jc9% vqaqpepm0xbba9pwe9Q8fs0-yqaqpepae9pg0FirpepeKkFr0xfr-x% fr-xb9adbaqaaeGaciGaaiaabeqaamaabaabaaGcbaGabmiwayaara% aaaa!36E2!\[\bar X\] = 38 mg l–1), Ca++ (% MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGqiVu0Je9sqqrpepC0xbbL8F4rqqrFfpeea0xe9Lq-Jc9% vqaqpepm0xbba9pwe9Q8fs0-yqaqpepae9pg0FirpepeKkFr0xfr-x% fr-xb9adbaqaaeGaciGaaiaabeqaamaabaabaaGcbaGabmiwayaara% aaaa!36E2!\[\bar X\] = 121 mg l–1) and reactive-Si (% MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGqiVu0Je9sqqrpepC0xbbL8F4rqqrFfpeea0xe9Lq-Jc9% vqaqpepm0xbba9pwe9Q8fs0-yqaqpepae9pg0FirpepeKkFr0xfr-x% fr-xb9adbaqaaeGaciGaaiaabeqaamaabaabaaGcbaGabmiwayaara% aaaa!36E2!\[\bar X\] = 10.8 mg l–1). Employingin situ enclosures containing inocula of the lake zooplankton (mainlyDaphnia galeata, Daphnia cucullata andBosmina spp.) from a moderately eutrophic Lake Ros (Northern Poland) or large-bodiedDaphina magna, the following observations on succession of phytoplankton were made: 1) whereasD. magna could control the density of all the photoplankton size classes, the lake zooplankton could not suppress the large-sized phytoplankters or net phytoplankton; 2) the lake zooplankton was able to control the density of small algae (< 50μm), but its effect on large algae may be opposite: a promotion of net phytoplankton growth by removing small-sized algae which can out-compete net phytoplankton for limited PO4-P resources (<5μg P l−1). Since efficiency of phytoplankton density control byD. magna decreased with an increase in net phytoplankton abundance, biomanipulation could not be successful without introducing or maintaining a high population of large-bodied cladoceran species before high densities of large algae would make the control of phytoplankton inefficient.  相似文献

To examine how soil phosphorus status affects nitrogen fixation by the Casuarinaceae —Frankia symbiosis,Casuarina equisetifolia and two species ofAllocasuarina (A. torulosa andA. littoralis) inoculated or fertilized with KNO3 were grown in pots in an acid soil at 4 soil phosphate levels. InoculatedC. equisetifolia nodulated well by 12 weeks after planting and the numbers and weight of nodules increased markedly with phosphorus addition. Growth ofC. equisetifolia dependent on symbiotically fixed nitrogen was more sensitive to low levels of phosphorus (30 mg kg–1 soil) than was growth of seedings supplied with combined nitrogen; at higher levels of phosphorus, the growth response curves were similar for both nitrogen fertilized and inoculated plants. The interaction between phosphorus and nitrogen treatments (inoculated and nitrogen fertilized) demonstrated that there was a greater requirement of phosphorus for symbiotic nitrogen fixation than for plant growth when soil phosphorus was low.WithAllocasuarina species, large plant to plant variation in nodulation occurred both within pots and between replicates. This result suggests genetic variation in nodulation withinAllocasuarina species. Nodulation ofAllocasuarina species did not start until 16 weeks after planting and no growth response due toFrankia inoculation was obtained at the time of harvest. Addition of nitrogen starter is suggested to boost plant growth before the establishment of the symbiosis. Growth ofAllocasuarina species fertilized with nitrogen responded to increasing levels of phosphorus up to 90 mg P/kg soil after which it declined by 69% forA. littoralis. The decrease in shoot weight ofA. littoralis, A. torulosa, C. equisetifolia andC. cunninghamiana at high phosphorus was confirmed in a sand culture experiment, and may be atributable to phosphorus toxicity.

Chara fragilis and Chara vulgaris were cultivated in a natural medium containing rubidium and caesium as chloride. The growth of Characeae was increased after culture in the solutions containing Rb and Cs in small amount. The resistance to the toxic effects of these two ions is enhanced if potassium chloride is added to the medium.Quantitative analyses indicate that Rb and Cs decrease the rate of Na and K but have no significative influence on the rate of Ca.

Seasonal changes of phytoplankton were followed over 3 years (1985–87) in a shallow, unstratified and calcareous upland lake. The phytoplankton was of low to moderate abundance and generally dominated by phytoflagellates. Seasonality involved a winter minimum of abundance, a spring maximum of diatoms, and often brief increases in summer that included blue-greens, especially the colonial Gloeotrichia echinulata. Some components were of benthic origin. Seasonal growth of the main component of the phytobenthos, Chara globularisvar. virgata, caused a regular summer depletion in lake water of Ca2+ and HCO3 - (alkalinity) by associated CaCO3 deposition, and a more extreme (and unusual) depletion of K+. Chemical analysis of Chara biomass and of underlying sediments indicated a large benthic nutrient stock, much surpassing that represented by the phytoplankton. Growth in this biomass, and the magnitude of water-borne inputs, influenced the removals of Ca2+, K+ and inorganic N. The phytoplankton was probably limited by a low-P medium, to which co-precipitation of phosphate with CaCO3 may have contributed. A vernal depletion of Si was probably limiting to diatom growth, and appeared to be mainly induced by benthic rather than planktonic diatoms. Examples of long-term change in composition of the phytoplankton and phytobenthos are noted and discussed in relation to the interaction of these components, nutrient enrichment, and possible alternative stable states.  相似文献

Kinetic analysis of the reduction of Cr(VI) by resting cell suspensions of Desulfovibrio vulgaris ATCC 29579 and a new isolate, Desulfovibrio sp. (`Oz7') was studied using lactate as the electron donor at 30 °C. The apparent K m (K m app) and V max with respect to Cr(VI) reduction was compared for both strains. Desulfovibio sp. `Oz7' had a K m app of 90 M (threefold lower than that of D. vulgaris ATCC 29579) and a V max of 120 nmol h–1 mg–1 biomass dry wt (approx. 30% lower than for the reference strain). The potential of the new isolate for bioremediation of Cr(VI) wastewaters is discussed.  相似文献

This paper discusses the transition from heather-dominated vegetation to one dominated by grass. The dominating species involved are Calluna vulgaris and Deschampsia flexuosa. The study covered three years, 1980–82, and was done at the Hoorneboeg heathland in the Netherlands. Several factors account for this transition: damage caused by the chrysomelid heather beetle Lochmaea suturalis Thomson, soil type, and interaction between beetle damage and Deschampsia when already present underneath or in the immediate vicinity of a Calluna canopy. There was a time-lag between beetle damage and grass establishment or expansion. In fact, this transition concerns a type of vegetation succession and can be treated as such. This succession therefore involves several causative factors external to the system Calluna-Deschampsia. The successional process is conceived as a stochastic one defined by transition probabilities which depend on a time component, a space component and a logistic response component. All these components are discussed in this paper, but the discussion of yet another component, the crowding of Deschampsia itself, will be treated separately.  相似文献

Translocation of [14C]gibberellic acid into antheridial cells of Chara vulgaris L. was investigated in relation to the presence of symplasmic connections between the antheridium and the thallus. It was found that manubria, capitular cells, and antheridial filaments were about three-fold more strongly labelled in young antheridia connected to the thallus by plasmodesmata than in older antheridia in which spontaneous symplasmic isolation had occurred. Plasmolytically induced symplasmic isolation of young antheridia severely diminished the radioactivity of all the cells, down to the level characteristic for spontaneously isolated antheridia. It is concluded that plasmodesmata are the main channel of gibberellin transport into antheridia. The change in the character of symplasmic connections during the course of morphogenesis might, among other events, constitute a signal determining a shift of cell metabolism in a new direction, in response to a rapid change in gibberellin level.Abbreviations GA(n) gibberellin (An) - GA3 gibberellic acid - IAA indole-3-acetic acid This study was supported by the Polish Academy of Sciences research project CPBP 04.01.5.05.  相似文献

Microbial flocculants for harvesting mass cultured Chlorella vulgaris were screened and that from Paenibacillussp. AM49 was identified as the best. The flocculation efficiency of this bioflocculant increased with the pH within a range of pH 5–11 and was 83%, which was higher than the 72% and 78% produced by aluminum sulfate and polyacrylamide, respectively. The highest flocculation efficiency was with 6.8 mm CaCl2 as co-flocculant. The bioflocculant from Paenibacillussp. AM49 can be used effectively to harvest C. vulgaris from large-scale cultures.  相似文献
