Effects of varying dietary protein intake on serum free amino acid (FAA) concentrations were studied in harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) fed two different prey fish diets: either exclusively low-fat, high-protein walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) or high-fat, relatively high-energy-density Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi). Significant differences in FAA concentrations and patterns were observed between the two diets. All essential amino acids (EAA), except methionine and phenylalanine, and two nonessential amino acids (NEAA), glycine and tyrosine, decreased when the diet was switched from herring to pollock and increased on switching back to herring. Both total EAA concentrations and EAA : NEAA ratios decreased with the elevated protein intake typical of a low-fat pollock diet, indicating an inverse correlation between EAA concentrations and dietary protein intake levels. We propose that differing dietary protein intake, caused by differences in macronutrient composition of the two prey fish species, induced a change in protein metabolism that was reflected in blood-circulating amino acids. These findings suggest that surveys of amino acid profiles may be useful to partially determine the protein metabolic status of harbor seals.  相似文献

Bandicoots are opportunistic omnivores that feed on invertebrates, fungi and both epigeal and hypogeal plant parts. We examined the performance of the digestive tract of the long-nosed bandicoot (Perameles nasuta) in terms of intake and total digestibility, patterns of excretion of inert digesta markers, and likely sites of digesta retention, on two diets designed to mimic part of their natural plant and insect diets. On the insect diet (mealworm larvae), bandicoots virtually maintained body mass at a digestible energy intake of 511 kJ · kg-0.75 · day-1 and were in strongly positive nitrogen balance. In contrast, on the plant diet (shredded sweet potato), bandicoots ate only one-third as much digestible energy, lost 7% body mass, and were in negative nitrogen balance. Mean retention times of two particle markers on the plant diet (27.5 and 27.0 h) were more than double those on the insect diet (12.4 and 11.2 h), and on both diets the mean retention time of the fluid digesta marker was greater than those of the particle markers, indicating consistent selective retention of fluid digesta in the gut. It was seen radiographically than in mealwormfed bandicoots major sites of digesta retention were the distal colon and rectum, whereas in the sweet potato-fed animals the caecum and proximal colon were principal sites. Metabolic effects of dietary macronutrients on diet-tissue isotopic discrimination factors were investigated in harbor seals. Three seals were fed either high fat/low protein herring (H), or low fat/high protein pollock (P), and switched to the alternative every 4 months. This allowed each seal to be subjected to two dietary treatments in each of three metabolically defined seasons (breeding from May to September, molting from September to January, and late winter/early spring period from January to May) over a 2 year cycle, and function as its internal control regardless of physiological changes over season. One seal was fed a constant equal mix of H and P over the entire trial. Up to 1 per thousand differences in serum delta15N values of one seal fed alternatively on H and P were observed. Progressively more enriched serum delta15N values as diet switching from H to P might link to changes in seal digestive physiology and protein metabolism in response to very high protein intake on P diet. These findings demonstrate that dietary macronutrients of prey species and protein intake level of consumers also play important roles in shaping isotopic patterns of a consumer's tissues, and thus influence accurate data interpretation of stable isotope techniques in ecological applications.  相似文献

Food type or quality can influence assimilation efficiency (AE). AE (digestibility of dry matter) of two captive adult ringed seals (Phoca hispida; one male, one female) was estimated for five prey types. In trials, each of >8 days duration, the seals were fed redfish (Sebastes spp.), capelin (Mallotus villosus), Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida), Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) and a mixture of herring and shrimp (Pandalus borealis). Prey were marked so that faecal samples could be matched to individual seals, and AE was estimated by the relative concentration of Mn2+ in food and faeces. AE was high but varied among the prey species (redfish 83%; capelin 87%; Arctic cod 88%; herring 94%; herring/Pandalus mixture 92%). There was a weak, positive relationship between AE and prey lipid content or energy density, but a negative relationship with inorganic content. AE was lower than expected for cape lin with high fat content. AE was not correlated with meal mass, number of fish in a meal, or seal mass. AE did not differ between the two seals. Differences in the allometric scaling between gut capacity (with body mass, BM1.00) and food intake (with BM0.75) should theoretically result in a scaling of digesta retention time with BM0.25 and therefore a higher digestive efficiency in larger herbivores. This concept is an important part of the so-called ‘Jarman–Bell principle’ (JBP) that explains niche differentiation along a body size gradient in terms of digestive physiology. Empirical data in herbivorous mammals, however, do not confirm the scaling of retention time, or of digestive efficiency, with body mass. Here, we test these concepts in herbivorous reptiles, adding data of an experiment that measured food intake, digesta retention, digestibility and gut capacity in 23 tortoises (Testudo graeca, T. hermanni , Geochelone nigra, G. sulcata, Dipsochelys dussumieri) across a large BM range (0.5–180 kg) to a literature data collection. While dry matter gut fill scaled to BM1.07 and dry matter intake to BM0.76, digesta mean retention time (MRT) scaled to BM0.17; the scaling exponent was not significantly different from zero for species > 1 kg. Food intake level was a major determinant of MRT across reptiles and mammals. In contrast to dietary fibre level, BM was not a significant contributor to dry matter digestibility in a General Linear Model. Digestibility coefficients in reptiles depended on diet nutrient composition in a similar way as described in mammals. Although food intake is generally lower and digesta retention longer in reptiles than in mammals, digestive functions scale in a similar way in both clades, indicating universal principles in herbivore digestive physiology. The reasons why the theoretically derived JBP has little empirical support remain to be investigated. Until then, the JBP should not be evoked to explain niche differentiation along a body size axis in terms of digestive physiology.  相似文献

Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) were fed restricted iso-caloric amounts of Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi) or walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) for 8–9 days, four times over the course of a year to investigate effects of season and prey composition on sea lion physiology. At these levels, the sea lions lost body mass at a significantly higher rate during winter (1.6 ± 0.14 kg day−1), and at a lower rate during summer (1.2 ± 0.32 kg day−1). Decreases in body fat mass and standard metabolic rates during the trials were similar throughout the seasons and for both diet types. The majority of the body mass that was lost when eating pollock derived from decreases in lipid mass, while a greater proportion of the mass lost when eating herring derived from decreases in lean tissue, except in the summer when the pattern was reversed. Metabolic depression was not observed during all trials despite the constant loss of body mass. Our study supports the hypothesis that restricted energy intake may be more critical to Steller sea lions in the winter months, and that the type of prey consumed (e.g., herring or pollock) may have seasonally specific effects on body mass and composition.  相似文献

Digestion is an important process in understanding the feeding ecology of animals. We examined digesta passage time, digestibility, and total gut fill in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata; n = 4) under 4 dietary conditions representing the seasonal and regional variations in the diets of wild populations to determine the effects of food type and food intake on these digestive features. Food type is associated with mean retention time (MRT), digestibility, and total gut fill. Dry matter intake (DMI) of food correlates positively with total gut fill but not with MRT or digestibility. Conversely, indigestible DMI affected MRT negatively. Thus, when Japanese macaques consume high-fiber foods, MRT becomes shorter and digestibility is lower than when eating low-fiber foods. Moreover, macaques experience increases in total gut fill when they consume high-fiber diets or a large amount of food. Japanese macaques may excrete difficult-to-digest food components quickly; they nevertheless buffer an increase in food intake by an increase in gut fill. Our study offers new insights into the relationship between feeding ecology and nutritional physiology in primates by simultaneously examining the effects of food type and intake level on MRT and digestibility.  相似文献

We fed prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) rat chow diluted with variable amounts of -cellulose to determine 1) how much fiber the voles could tolerate in their diet; 2) changes in food intake and digestibility of dry matter and of fiber; 3) the extent to which voles utilized fiber as an energy source; and 4) whether any of these variables differed between groups of animals maintained at 5 or 22°C. Fiber content of the diets ranged from 20 to 84%. Animals held at 5°C maintained body mass through a diet containing 69% fiber, while animals held at 22°C maintained body mass through the 84% fiber diet. Dry matter intake increased with fiber level from 9.3 to 15.0 g·day-1 for animals at 5°C and from 5.6 to 14.0 g·day-1 for animals at 22°C; intake on the highest fiber diet eaten by either group was not different. Dry matter digestibility decreased significantly as the fiber in the diets increased, but was not affected by temperature treatments. Digestible dry matter intake for each group remained constant regardless of diet quality, but on each diet digestible dry matter intake for animals at 5°C was significantly higher than that of the animals held at 22°C. Digestibility of the fiber portion of the experimental diets remained constant as food quality decreased, so the percent of daily energy need met by fiber utilization increased with higher food intake. An assumption based on the Jarman–Bell principle suggests a positive relationship between body size and the digestive efficiency in animals, where smaller animals are less effective at digesting fibrous food due to shorter digesta passage. To examine the effect of body size within a species and explore a potential physiological background of ontogenetic diet shifts, we measured food intake, digestibility, digesta passage and gut fill in nine Japanese macaques, including three juveniles/subadult animals. Although these three showed a comparable digestive efficiency as the older animals on a low-fiber diet, they did not achieve the long retention times of adults in spite of similar levels of indigestible food intake and gut capacity. While the limited sample size would not allow generalized conclusions on ontogenetic digestive development in primates, this study suggests additional, yet unexplored effects other than food intake, digestion and gut capacity on digesta retention during ontogeny.  相似文献

Summary Digestion and energy metabolism in an arboreal marsupial, the koalaPhascolarctos cinereus, fed mature foliage from a common food tree, the grey gumEucalyptus punctata, were investigated. Six feeding (balance) experiments, at various times of year, and one slaughter experiment were performed and average daily oxygen consumption was measured.The average apparent digestibilities of dietary constituents were: dry matter 54%; total cell-contents 69%; available carbohydrate 92%; crude lipid 43%; total nitrogen 45%; total phenolics 91%; total cell walls 25%; hemicellulose 24%; acid-detergent fibre 25%; cellulose 31%; lignin 19%.Average digestible and metabolizable energy intakes were 0.50 and 0.43 MJ kg–0.75 d–1 respectively of which only 0.28 MJ kg–0.75 d–1 was expended in oxidative metabolism. The digestible energy intake required for maintenance was estimated to be 0.33 MJ kg–0.75 d–1, which is lower than that of eutherian and of other marsupial herbivores. The principal sources of metabolizable energy were non-structural carbohydrate and lipid.It is postulated that the ability of koalas to utilizeEucalyptus foliage as a sole source of nutrients is facilitated by their low requirement for energy and their ability to maximize intake of non cell-wall constituents.E. punctata foliage has a high digestible energy content compared with the foliage of many other trees and this may be a factor in its selection by koalas.Abbreviations DMI dry matter intake - DMD dry matter digestibility - DE digestible energy - ME metabolizable energy  相似文献
