The incidence of gyrocotyllid worms in chimaeroids and cestode larvae and nematodes in the stomachs of some 13 600 demersal and pelagic fish from the Rockall Trough, northeastern Atlantic is determined. The observations were made in conjunction with a detailed study of the diets of the fish which belonged to 117 species. No dietary sources of the infections could be identified with certainty. Pelagically caught fish, from between the surface and 2500 m depth, had no helminth infestation of their stomachs. Infestations of demersal fish were more pronounced between 1500 and 2900 m than between 500 and 1250 m depth.  相似文献

The stomach contents of representatives of approximately 100 species of pelagic and demersal fish caught in the Rockall Trough, northeastern Atlantic ocean, have been examined for the occurrence of mysids. More than 40 species of fish included mysids in their diets. The majority of the 21 species of mysids identified in the stomachs live in close association with the sediment and are rarely caught in pelagic nets. Mysids contributed significantly to the diets of many demersal fish but were not apparently important constituents of the food of pelagic fish.  相似文献

Over 30 different prey species were found in the stomachs of roughhead grenadiers, Macrourus berglax , caught at depths of approximately 700 m off the coast of northern Norway. Crustaceans and fish were the principal prey categories and large, mature grenadiers are classified as being generalist feeders taking predominantly benthopelagic organisms. There is evidence for an ontogenetic shift in dietary composition, with a change from benthic prey to an increased reliance on benthopelagic prey as the fish increase in size and this results in reduced intraspecific competition for food.  相似文献

Nezumia aequalis is one of the most abundant fishes on the upper and middle continental slopes (500–1750 m depth zones) of the North-east Atlantic with a peak abundance of three to four individuals 1000 m−2 swept area in the 750-m zone. Mean and modal size increased with depth, fish from the Rockall Trough (RT) being larger than those at equivalent depths in the Porcupine Seabight (PSB). Sex ratios were close to parity in all depth zones. Females grew larger than males. Head length to total length and to total weight did not differ significantly between sexes but RT fish were heavier at any given length than PSB fish. Serial batch spawning occurred over the first three quarters of the year. Ovaries contained five size groups of eggs, the three largest groups being vitelline and contributing 27% of the absolute individual fecundity which was positively correlated with body size and ranged from 9109 to 26 847. Age determined from sagittal otoliths ranged from 1 to 10 years, the ageing method being validated by a time-series study of the growing edge of otoliths. The von Bertalanffy growth parameter ( k ) was estimated at 0·175 and 0·216 from head length and otolith length, respectively.  相似文献

A collection of thambematids (Crustacea, Isopoda, Asellota) from depths of 1400–2900 m in the Rockall Trough, west of the British Isles, is considered. The type species of the genus Thambema Stebbing, T. amicorum Stebbing, is rediagnosed and three new species, T. golanachum, T. tanum , and T. fiatum , are described. The genera Thambema and Microthambema Birstein are contrasted and taxonomic characters separating these genera are provided. The difficulty of providing effective definitions for higher category taxa is discussed and a new definition is provided for the Asellota.  相似文献

Demersal fish community structure, distribution and trophic relationships on the slope (depth range 200–1500 m) of the sub-Antarctic Prince Edward Islands and surrounding sea rises were investigated during a pilot survey conducted in April 2001 onboard fishing vessel MV Iris . A total of 56 fish taxa were collected during the survey, of which 44 were identified to the species level, seven to the genus level and five to the family level. Among the identified taxa, 36 constituted new records for the area investigated. Total catch per unit effort (cpue) during the survey ranged from 1·1 to 241·2 individuals h−1. Both average fish diversity and total cpue positively correlated with trawling depth. Overall, mean sampling depth and near-bottom temperature explained 56% of total fish cpue. Hierarchal cluster analysis identified three distinct fish assemblages with pronounced dominant species. Major shifts in fish community composition occurred at 500–600 m and 800–900 m depth strata and could probably be a result of physical and biological vertical zonation. Analysis of the diet of selected fish species showed that they were generalist feeders, consuming predominantly pelagic, including epipelagic, meso- and benthopelagic, prey. Diets of six species and nitrogen stable isotope signatures of 22 species revealed that with a few exceptions most fishes occupied the fourth trophic level and were tertiary consumers. Wide variability in carbon isotopic signatures is discussed with respect to alternative, e.g . possible importance of high Antarctic and chemoautotrophic v . photoautotrophic sub-Antarctic primary production, organic matter sources at the base of deep-sea food webs.  相似文献

This paper summarizes the history of commercial exploitation of roundnose grenadier Coryphaenoides rupestris in the North Atlantic. Length frequencies of C. rupestris in 1993, from 400 to 1200 m on the slopes of the Rockall trough indicate a reduction since the 1970s in the modal length of fish found at 700–1000 m. Ages ranged from 2 to 50 years for males and 2 to 60 years for females, with most between 10–38 years. Females attained a greater asymptotic pre-anus length ( L =19.5 cm) than males ( L =15.5 cm) and had a greater weight for a given age (male W =761g, female W =1132g). This species may have a protracted spawning period. Using pre-anus lengths, 50% of male fish were mature at 10 cm (ages 8–10) while 50% of female fish were mature at 12 cm (ages 9–11). At the greatest depths sampled the length frequency of fish was bimodal with a hiatus between 9 and 11 cm (ages 8–12). Highest catch rates occurred on the Donegal slope in September at a depth of 800–1000 m.  相似文献

Notacanthid fishes were among the 10 most abundant species sampled in research surveys using fine meshed trawls fished to depths of 3000 m in the Rockall Trough and 4500 m in the Porcupine Seabight between 1975 and 1992. Two species, Noctacanthus bonapartei and Polyacanthonotus rissoanus , were dominant but their population structure and certain aspects of morphometric and reproductive biology differed between the two sampling areas. In general, sex ratios were skewed in favour of females, size increased with depth and male and immature individuals were restricted to shallower depth zones. Fecundity was highly correlated with total weight and showed a positive relationship with species' size. Ovaries contained two batches of eggs and the spawning season was protracted, occurring mostly over winter months. Dietary studies showed a dependence on benthic macro fauna though the two dominant species have different dentition and exploit different trophic niches. In the Rockall Trough, peak abundances for N. bonapartei and P. rissoanus occurred in the 750 m and 1250 m zones, respectively, lying within the depth range currently exploited by commercial deep-water trawls (600–1400 m). The probable impacts of commercial operations on notacanthid fishes are discussed.  相似文献

Meiofauna play an essential role in the diet of small and juvenile fish. However, it is less well documented which meiofaunal prey groups in the sediment are eaten by fish. Trophic relationships between five demersal fish species (solenette, goby, scaldfish, dab <20 cm and plaice <20 cm) and meiofaunal prey were investigated by means of comparing sediment samples and fish stomach contents collected seasonally between January 2009 and January 2010 in the German Bight. In all seasons, meiofauna in the sediment was numerically dominated by nematodes, whereas harpacticoids dominated in terms of occurrence and biomass. Between autumn and spring, the harpacticoid community was characterized by Pseudobradya minor and Halectinosoma canaliculatum, and in summer by Longipedia coronata. Meiofaunal prey dominated the diets of solenette and gobies in all seasons, occurred only seasonally in the diet of scaldfish and dab, and was completely absent in the diet of plaice. For all fish species (excluding plaice) and in each season, harpacticoids were the most important meiofauna prey group in terms of occurrence, abundance and biomass. High values of Ivlev’s index of selectivity for Pseudobradya spp. in winter and Longipedia spp. in summer provided evidence that predation on harpacticoids was species-selective, even though both harpacticoids co-occurred in high densities in the sediments. Most surficial feeding strategies of the studied fish species and emergent behaviours of Pseudobradya spp. and Longipedia spp. might have caused this prey selection. With increasing fish sizes, harpacticoid prey densities decreased in the fish stomachs, indicating a diet change towards larger benthic prey during the ontogeny of all fish species investigated.  相似文献

Validation of the ageing of deep-water fish is difficult and there are only a few instances where the rings on the otoliths have been shown to be laid down annually. Roundnose grenadier have been fished commercially in the North Atlantic since the 1960s and the adult fish have frequently been aged by counting the rings in otoliths or scales. All the ageing was done on the assumption that the rings in the otoliths or scales were annual. Between 1975 and 1992, the Scottish Association for Marine Science carried out seasonal trawling surveys in the Rockall Trough using a fine-meshed trawl, and collected otoliths from a wide size range of roundnose grenadier. An examination of the growing edge of otoliths from juvenile fish from these collections suggests that the rings in the otoliths are laid down annually. The broader, opaque zones which represent the growth phase were dominant between September and March. The thinner, hyaline zones were dominant between April and July. The apparent delay in the growth phase compared with most shallow-water species is discussed in relation to the availability of mesopelagic prey.  相似文献

Fishery surveys of the continental slope to the west of the British Isles have shown quite marked differences between areas in both the proportion and abundance of marketable or potentially marketable species. In general, the northern slopes lying to the west of Scotland were considered to have a greater potential for exploitation than the southern slopes off Ireland. Subsequent detailed studies of a northern (Rockall Trough) and a southern slope area (Porcupine Seabight) sampled the demersal fish fauna using a Granton trawl fished on paired warps to depths of 1200 m, and a semi-balloon trawl fished on a single warp to depths of about 3000 m. The Granton trawl catches differed significantly between the two areas, especially at the greatest depths fished. The semi-balloon trawl catches did not differ between the areas. This slower trawl was poor at catching large, mobile species and efficient in the capture of the deep-waler eel Synaphobranchus kaupi. This eel was numerically dominant over the mid to lower slope and probably accounts for much of the similarity between areas at these depths.  相似文献

Summary The diets of 12 species of demersal marine fish from various locations in the Canadian Arctic comprised a grand total of 267 prey species, mainly invertebrates. The total number of prey species taken by a single fish species ranged from 9 to 91, and the mean number per stomach from 2.0 to 9.4. The most important prey were Crustacea, most frequently epibenthic or planktonic species; Polychaeta, mainly the larger species; and Mollusca, notably the cropped siphons of Macoma calcarea. Generally, only a few species comprised the bulk of the food. Most of the fish had a predominantly benthic or epibenthic diet, a notable exception being Triglops pingeli which ate zoo plankton almost exclusively at the three sites from which it was collected. To a lesser extent, Triglops murrayi, Icelus spatula and Liparis gibbus also fed planktonically. No significant correlations in diet were found among sympatric fish populations, implying a division of resources and reduced interspecific competition.  相似文献

A dense aggregation of the roundnose grenadier Coryphaenoides rupestris was observed with a towed camera at a depth of 1500 m in the Rockall Trough during September. The density of fish was 100 times greater than other sites. Within the aggregation the fish showed directional alignment, rapid swimming actions, mid‐water swimming and social interactions similar to those associated with spawning in other Gadiformes.  相似文献

Pacific saury Cololabis saira were found in 24 out of 1314 stomachs of demersal fishes collected by bottom trawling at 245–393 m depths. The same area was occupied by the stick-held dipnet fishery for saury, in which a landing limitation was enforced to avoid overfishing. The fish species containing saury were: Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus , walleye pollock Theragra chalcogramma , and oilfish Ruvettus pretiosus . These demersal species would not encounter living saury naturally, which normally are distributed above thermoclines. The ingested saury were smaller than market size which suggests that the saury from fish stomachs were discarded by fishermen because of small sizes to maximize profits under the landing limitation.
The scavenged saury made up 41.5, 24.6 and 77.7% of the diets of large-sized (>30cm)Pacific cod, walleye pollock and oilfish, respectively in terms of DW composition. The extent to which discarded saury contributed to the total diet in the demersal fish assemblage, calculated by considering species composition and diets of bottom fishes, was 21.8% of the total diet. The discarded saury seemed to compensate the less productive feeding environment during autumn for the bottom fishes.  相似文献

Synopsis The purpose of this study was to evaluate the intensity of competition for food among 9 species of stream fishes that primarily eat aquatic invertebrates. The taxonomic and size composition, and numerical abundance of aquatic invertebrates were monitored for one year using drift and benthic samples. Diet data were obtained from stomachs of fishes captured at the same time and place that invertebrate sampling was done. Diet characteristics examined included taxonomic and size composition, number of prey per fish, and diet breadth. Drifting invertebrates were more abundant early in the year (March–June) than later (July–January). The summer-early fall scarcity of invertebrates was especially notable among those>3.6 mm long, which comprised the bulk of prey found in fish stomachs. Average prey size eaten by a fish species was positively correlated with fish mouth size, but interspecific overlap in prey size was extensive. Cyprinids as a group (5 species) ate proportionally fewer small (< 3.6 mm long) prey from July to January than did the centrarchids and stonecat. Taxonomic compositions of available invertebrates and fish diets varied markedly among sampling dates, but the use of prey taxa by fishes was not correlated with the availability of those taxa. Use of aquatic prey taxa was generally similar among fish species, but cyprinids as a group ate proportionally more terrestrial prey from July to January than did the centrarchids and stonecat. Diet breadths for all species increased as food levels declined, indicating that these fishes experienced resource depression. Food scarcity was evidently more severe for cyprinids since their stomachs contained few prey through the summer and fall relative to the centrarchids and stonecat. Though the fish species studied probably compete for food in the summer and fall, this competition did not account for the community structure observed.  相似文献

Prey exploitation was documented for Hippoglossoides platessoides, Pleuronectes ferrugineus , and P. americanus collected from southeast Sable Island Bank in February and June 1989. Diets varied significantly by sample and with fish species and length. Of 239 species consumed by flatfishes, 66 were determined to be principal prey. Crustaceans, particularly amphipods, were the most frequently exploited prey of all three flatfish species. Small H. platessoides fed on suprabenthic fauna, while larger fish exploited epifauna and hyperiid suprafauna. P. ferrugineus exploited epibenthic fauna, consuming crustaceans and tunicates when small and polychaetes when larger. P. americanus preyed on epifauna; smaller fish exploited polychaetes while larger fish usually consumed crustaceans associated with ectoproct colonies. Feeding intensity was dramatically lower in February, food being found in stomachs of only 36% of H. platessoides and 49% of P. ferrugineus , and lacking in the stomachs of P. americanus . In June, stomachs of 86% of H. platessoides , 94% of P. ferrugineus and 96% of P. americanus contained food. Results indicate that prey resources for the three flatfish species are partitioned by specific habitat and prey type preferences.  相似文献

Tags containing acoustic time-depth transmitters (ATDT) were attached to four humpback whales near Kodiak, Alaska. Tags allowed for whale dive depths to be recorded in real time. Acoustic and mid-water trawl surveys were conducted concurrent with tagging efforts within the study area to quantify available fish resources and describe potential prey selection by humpback whales. Recorded dives were grouped through visual assessment and t -tests. Dives that indicated likely foraging occurred at a mean maximum depth of 106.2 m with 62% of dives occurring between 92 m and 120 m. Acoustic backscatter from fish surveys was attributed to potential humpback prey based on known target strength values and 10 net tows. Capelin comprised 84% of the total potential prey abundance in the region followed by age 0 (12%) and juvenile pollock (2%), and eulachon (<1%). Although horizontally segregated in the region, both capelin and age 0 pollock were distributed at depths exceeding 92 m with maximum abundance between 107 m and 120 m. The four-tagged humpbacks were found to forage in areas with greatest capelin densities but bypassed areas of high age 0 pollock abundance. The location and diving behavior of tagged whales suggested that whales were favoring capelin over pollock as a prey source.  相似文献

Stomach contents were analyzed from 127 Baird's beaked whales, Berardius bairdii , taken in coastal waters of Japan. During late July-August of 1985–1987, 1989, and 1991, 107 samples were collected from off the Pacific coast of Honshu. An additional 20 samples were collected from whales taken in the southern Sea of Okhotsk during late August—September of 1988 and 1989. Prey identification using fish otoliths and cephalopod beaks revealed the whales fed primarily on deep-water gadiform fishes and cephalopods in both regions. Prey species diversity and the percentage of cephalopods and fish differed between the two regions. Off the Pacific coast of Honshu the whales fed primarily on benthopelagic fishes (81.8%) and only 18.0% on cephalopods. Eight species of fish representing two families, the codlings (Moridae) and the grenadiers (Macrouridae), collectively made up 81.3% of rhe rotal. Thirty species of cephalopods representing 14 families made up 12.7%. In the southern Sea of Okhotsk, cephalopods accounted for 87.1% of stomach contents. The families Gonatidae and Cranchiidae were the predominant cephalopod prey, accounting for 86.7% of the diet. Gadiform fish accounted for only 12.9% of the diet. Longfin codling, Laemonema longipes , was the dominant fish prey in both regions. Depth distribution of the two commonly consumed fish off the Pacific coast of Honshu indicate the whales in this region fed primarily at depths ranging from 800 to 1,200 m.  相似文献

The general composition and diversity of the diets of the 43 most commonly caught pelagic and demersal fish of the Rockall Trough, north-eastern Atlantic Ocean, are assessed. The fish are divided into three Groups. The 8 species in Group I consist of both pelagic and demersal species feeding on relatively few prey-classes and having a diet of low diversity and few items per meal. Group II contains 22 pelagic and demersal species with more diverse diets, less restricted dietary composition, but still consuming relatively few items per meal. Group III is the 12 demersal macrourid species with the most diverse diets, a variable dietary composition and the greatest mean number of items per meal. One species, Maurolicus muelleri , had too many unidentified components in its diet to allow classification in terms of Groups I, II or III. All diets contained dominant items, the diversity within diets offish in Groups II and III arising from the inclusion of subdominants and rare items. The diets of species in Groups I and II can be defined in terms of ecological constitution, trophic diversity and prey-species composition. Those of the Group III macrourids differ in that their definition is liable to be a compromise between the situation where ecological constitution and trophic diversity are adequately defined but not species composition.  相似文献

Major temporal changes in the importance of euphausiids and Atlantic herring Clupea harengus in the diet of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua , 10–75 cm L F, occurred in shallow waters (<100 m depths) of the southern Gulf of St Lawrence between 1959 and 2000. Euphausiids represented 6–70% of prey mass for Atlantic cod 31–60 cm L F from 1959 to 1987 but only trace amounts were detected in stomachs collected from 1990 to 2000. Mysids and gammarid amphipods (for Atlantic cod ≤45 cm L F), and Atlantic herring (for Atlantic cod >45 cm L F) largely replaced euphausiids in the Atlantic cod diets from 1990 to 2000. This diet change suggested there has been a major perturbation of the food web of the southern Gulf of St Lawrence. The importance of fishes (mostly Atlantic herring) in the diet of Atlantic cod >45 cm L F increased significantly between the periods 1959–1980 and 1987–2000. Atlantic herring comprised 0–4% (mean 1.3%) of prey mass of Atlantic cod 46–60 cm L F from 1959 to 1980 and increased to 2–42% (mean 19.6%) of the diet from 1987 to 2000. Atlantic herring comprised 0–25% (mean 9.4%) of the prey mass of Atlantic cod 61–75 cm L F from 1959 to 1980 and increased to 42–81% (mean 54.2%) of prey mass from 1987 to 2000. This increased consumption of Atlantic herring was consistent with observed changes in abundance of Atlantic herring in the ecosystem between the late 1970s and 2000. The large changes in consumption of euphausiids and Atlantic herring represent highly significant changes and would need to be included in the development and interpretation of ecosystem-based management models for this ecosystem.  相似文献
