The effect of zinc on the prelarvae of the Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus and on the sand flounder Limanda punctatissima punctatissima and of lead on the prelarvae of the Japanese anchovy was investigated. The median lethal concentrations and maximum ineffective concentrations for a 96-h exposure were calculated. The maximum ineffective concentrations of metals did not exceed their background levels in Peter the Great Bay (Sea of Japan) but were markedly lower than the maximum permissible concentrations (MPC) set for waters of the seas of the Russian Federation. The prelarvae of the Japanese anchovy and the sand flounder can be useful for evaluation and comparison of the toxicity of pollutants and for the estimation of regional MPC levels for pollutants of marine waters.  相似文献

Two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, is one of the most important pests of agricultural products that have a global distribution. Now, the control is dependent on the use of chemical pesticides. The effects of the sublethal concentrations (LC10 and LC25) of the essential oil of Cinnamomum zeylanicum were evaluated on some parameters of the life table of the pest, at the constant temperature of 30?°C, relative humidity of 40?±?5% and photoperiod of 16L: 8D. Our results showed that the essential oil of cinnamon is effective on female adult stage. Lethal concentration at which 50% mortality (LC50) for the essential oils is from C. zeylanicum on female adult mite was 23.39?μl/L air. Sublethal concentrations of the essential oil of C. zeylanicum also impair the natural biology of the mite. Concentrations of sublethal of essential oil decreased age-specific fertility (mx) of T. urticae compared with the control. Sublethal concentrations (LC10 and LC25) have reduced the life expectancy (ex) in egg stage. Sublethal effects of the essential oil of C. zeylanicum and its impact on T. urticae management are discussed.  相似文献

The prawn Macrobrachium sintangense is likely to be subjected to occasional exposure to combined metal and saline stressors in its natural environment. This research evaluated the acute toxicity (96?h LC50) of cadmium (Cd) on the prawn M. sintangense, with respect to the osmoregulatory capacity (OC) of prawns and to document histological changes in the gills after exposure to sublethal Cd concentrations at different salinities. The 96?h LC50 of Cd to M. sintangense decreased with increasing salinity. The 96?h LC50 values were 89.12 (72.53–109.50), 681.26 (554.20–837.46) and 825.37 (676.99–1006.27) μg CdL?1 at 0, 10 and 20 ppt, respectively. The OC of prawns exposed to 30?μg?CdL?1 at 0 ppt and to 300?μg?CdL?1 at10 ppt decreased significantly compared with that of control prawns exposed to 0 and 10 ppt respectively. Swelling, hyperplasia and necrosis of gill lamellae resulting in the loss of marginal canals were observed in the gills of prawns exposed to 30?μg?CdL?1 at 0 ppt and to 300?μg?CdL?1 at 10 ppt for 7?days.  相似文献

Copper is a common marine pollutant yet its effects on symbiotic cnidarians are largely understudied. To further understand the impact of elevated copper concentrations on marine symbiotic organisms, toxicity tests were conducted using the model sea anemone, Aiptasia pallida, with and without its zooxanthellae symbiont. Symbiotic and aposymbiotic A. pallida were exposed to sublethal copper concentrations (0, 5, 15, and 50 µg/L) for 7 d and copper accumulation, behavior, and the activity of the oxidative stress enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) were measured. Additionally, acute 96-h toxicity tests were conducted to determine LC50 values of the organisms after copper exposure. Both symbiotic and aposymbiotic A. pallida rapidly accumulated copper in a time and dose dependent manner. However, higher copper concentrations accumulated in the aposymbiotic as compared to the symbiotic A. pallida. In response to the highest two copper exposures (15 and 50 µg/L) symbiotic A. pallida upregulated CAT activity to combat the damaging effects of hydrogen peroxide. Contrary to these results, SOD activity significantly decreased during the highest copper exposure, when compared to controls. CAT activity was not detected and SOD was substantially (> 10 fold) reduced in aposymbiotic A. pallida, suggesting that the zooxanthellae are associated with the oxidative stress response. Copper exposure as low as 5 µg/L caused tentacle retraction and increased mucus production in both symbiotic and aposymbiotic anemones. The LC50 values for symbiotic and aposymbiotic A. pallida exposed to copper for 96 h were 148 µg/L (95% confidence interval = 126.4, 173.8) and 206 µg/L (95% confidence interval = 175.2, 242.2), respectively. Understanding the varying responses of symbiotic and aposymbiotic A. pallida to copper stress may advance our comprehension of the functional roles of zooxanthellae and host. Although the mechanism of copper toxicity has not been fully elucidated, it is clear that A. pallida accumulate copper and are sensitive, as effects were detected at environmentally relevant copper concentrations. Likewise, A. pallida may be useful in biomonitoring copper polluted environments.  相似文献

Abstract Effects of hexaflumuron at 10% lethal concentration (LC10) and LC25 on development and reproduction parameters of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus, 1753) (Lep.: Yponomeutidae) were investigated. Estimated LC50, LC10 and LC25 values of leaf dip bioassay of hexaflumuron on the third instar larvae of the P. xylostella were 1.48, 0.59 and 0.91 mg/L, respectively. Hexaflumuron decreased pupal weight in the parent generation at sublethal concentrations but in the offspring generation, this effect was not observed. Sublethal concentrations increased egg, first and second larval instar and pupa developmental time and shortened life span of adults, but did not change the third and fourth larval instars and pre‐pupa developmental period. Also fecundity of females reduced significantly but hatchability of treatments and control were similar. Survival rate of pre‐adult stages declined significantly at LC25 concentration. Reproduction parameters such as reproductive rate (R0) and intrinsic rate of increase in sublethal concentrations were significantly lower compared with control, but gross reproduction rate (GRR) at the LC10 concentration was increased and it could be hormoligosis. Also hexaflumuron significantly increased doubling time (Dt). We conclude that the sublethal effects of hexaflumuron might exhibit significant effects on the population dynamics of P. xylostella.  相似文献

The sublethal effects of pyriproxyfen (PYR, a juvenile hormone analogue) were investigated for two consecutive generations on life-history parameters, such as developmental time, pupal weight, fecundity, fertility and longevity of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). After topical application bioassay of third instar larvae, the LC25 and LC50 values (as sublethal doses) were determined to be 1.49 and 2.01 μg/μl, respectively. The results showed that the egg incubation period, larval and pupal duration times and oviposition period were increased in treated groups compared with the control (treated with distilled water). Pupal weight, adult longevity, fecundity and fertility were significantly reduced in the treatment groups compared with the control. Using the age-stage, two-sex life table analysis, we found that the intrinsic rate of increase (r), finite rate of increase (λ), gross reproduction rate (GRR) and net reproductive rate (R 0) significantly decreased while the mean generation time (T) and doubling time (DT) increased in two treatment groups compared with the control. In addition, administration of PYR induced morphogenetic abnormalities including untanned pupae, larval–pupal intermediates and various defective adults. The LC50 value was more effective on all of the above biological characteristics than the LC25 for both generations, although parents were more affected than the offspring. In general, our results revealed that PYR was highly effective against P. xylostella in the laboratory both directly (causing mortality) and indirectly (disruption of normal growth and development). We conclude that PYR is an excellent candidate for suppressing populations of P. xylostella through its sublethal effects.  相似文献

Tilapia rendalli was exposed to various siltconcentrationsfor different exposure periods to determine LC50 andsublethalconcentration ranges. The extent of damaging effects, if any, ofsuspended silt on the exposed fish, were investigated by meansofscanning electron microscopy. The LC50 values rangedbetween21 to 24 g l1 and 42–48 g l1 for juveniles andadultsrespectively. The silt concentrations tolerated by the testfisheswere above those found in most natural waters. The resultstherefore support the hypothesis that suspended silt is lethaltofish at concentrations higher than those naturally observed insurface water. The observed mortalities can be attributed tothecombined physical effects of high silt concentrations andassociated reduction in dissolved oxygen levels. To preventfishmortalities and other impacts on biota, anthropogenicactivitiesthat affect the natural variation in suspended siltconcentrationsin surface water should be carefully monitored and, wherepossible,be restricted.  相似文献

The fumigant and contact toxicity of essential oil (EO) extracted from the leaves of Callistemon viminalis and its aromatized clay powder (ACP) was evaluated against adults of Acanthoscelides obtectus and Callosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae). The results obtained for fumigation assays showed that C. maculatus seems to be more susceptible (LC50 = 0.019 μl/cm3) to the vapours of the essential oil than A. obtectus (LC50 = 0.011 μl/cm3) after 12 h exposure. On the other hand, A. obtectus seems to be more susceptible (LD50 = 0.133 μl/g) to the essential oil applied by contact on grains than C. maculatus (LD50 = 0.170 μl/g) after 2 days exposure. The ACP was also very toxic towards the adults of A. obtectus (LD50 = 0.100 μl/g) and C. maculatus (LD50 = 0.098 μl/g) by contact on grains. At the doses of 0.133 μl/g and 0.266 μl/g, mortalities caused by ACP on grains were higher than those caused by the same dose of EO against the two bruchids. It is also established that both the EO and the ACP caused higher inhibition of F1 progeny production of A. obtectus than that of C. maculatus. The loss of insecticidal activity of the two materials in the course of time has been observed; however, the toxicity of the ACP was more persistent than that of the oil in the course of time when applied on grains. These results suggest that EO from the leaves of C. viminalis can be used as fumigant agent against A. obtectus and C. maculatus. In addition, it could be advisable to use an adsorbent mineral material as carrier of this EO for the prolongation of its insecticidal activity in the course of time.  相似文献

Susceptibility of tobacco blue mould (Peronospora hyoscyami) to metalaxyl   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The lethal dose (LC50) of metalaxyl for a wild isolate of Peronospora hyoscyami f. sp. tabacina was determined using a bioassay. Infection levels were recorded using 5-wk-old tobacco seedlings that had been treated with foliar sprays of metalaxyl (Ridomil®) 24 h prior to inoculation. Plants were maintained in a controlled environment cabinet. LC50 estimates determined by probit analysis of the data from three independent experiments ranged between 0–46 and 0–58 μg/ml. Pooling the results for all three experiments, probit analysis gave a slope of 8·733 (S.E. 0·805) with an LC50 of 0·51 μg/ml (95% fiducial limits 0·45, 0·57). This determination will be useful as a guide to future monitoring of P. hyoscyami for resistance to metalaxyl.  相似文献

Summary Comparison of lytic-dose response behavior of seven lepidopteran cell lines to the activated delta-endotoxin polypeptides ofBacillus thuringiensis subspecieskurstaki (HD-263) andaizawai (HD-112) indicated distinct differences among the lines. The lines derived fromSpodoptera speciesS. exigua (URC-SE-1A) andS. littoralis (UIV-SL-575) were more susceptible to lysis byaizawai towin (Bta) thankurstaki toxin (Btk) as were cells from theLymantria dispar line (IPLB-LD652Y). However, the concentrations of Bta required for lysis of 50% of URC-SE-1A and IPLB-LD652Y cells (LC50) were 0.2 to 0.8 μg/ml compared to 5 to 9 μg/ml for UIV-SL-575 cells. In comparison, Btk LC50 concentrations for the three lines were similar (14 to 19 μg/ml). Cells fromS. frugiperda (IPLB-SF-21AE) andTrichoplusia ni (TN368) were similar in their response to Bta (LC50=2.5 to 3.7 μg/ml) and Btk (LC50=1.0 to 2.8 μg/ml) whereas the lines derived fromHeliothis spp. were the least susceptible to both toxins. The LC50 concentrations for Bta with theH. zea line (IPLB-HA-1075) andH. virescens line (BCIRL-HV-AM1) were >50 μg/ml and for Btk were >50 μg/ml and 42 to 50 μg/ml, respectively, yet for both lines Btk was the more cytolytic. Cytolysis of TN368 cells could be inhibited to varying extents by preincubation of the toxins with the aminosugars of galactose, mannose, and glucose and theirN-acetyl derivatives. The unsubstituted hexoses were not inhibitory. The order of decreasing inhibitory effectiveness was the same for both toxins regardless of the derivative species and followed the order galactose, mannose, and glucose. Also, inhibition of cytolysis could be achieved to varying extents by assaying cells grown in medium with tunicamycin. Lysis with Btk was inhibited 68 and 37% using treated cells of TN368 and IPLB-LD652Y, respectively; however, no inhibition was observed with URC-SE-1A cells. Further, no inhibition of Bta-mediated lysis was obtained with tunicamycin-grown cells of the three lines.  相似文献

1. Populations of Gammarus pulex (density 4000m?2) were exposed, over a 100-day period in a continuous-flow dosing system, to concentrations of copper below the 240 h median lethal concentration (LC50) for juveniles. 2. There was a significant effect of copper on the resulting population density. In the control and lowest treatment (11.0μg1-?1) it was double the initial density, but with increasing copper concentration there was a decrease in density until at the highest treatment (23.1 μg1-?1), it was less than that of the initial population. The lowest observed effect concentration (LOEC) for population density was 14.6 μg 1-?1. 3. Copper significantly affected the age composition of the final populations. In the control and lowest treatment concentration, the population was composed mainly of juvenile animals. With increasing copper concentration, however, there was a decrease in the number of juveniles, the LOEC being 14.6 μg1-?1. The number of adults in the final population was also significantly reduced by copper, with an LOEC of 18.2 μg1-?1. 4. The relationship between the body length and number of antennal segments of animals in the populations at each treatment concentration showed that growth was impaired by increased copper concentrations.  相似文献

A preliminary study was conducted to investigate the effects of the extracts of 112 medicinal plant species, collected from the southern part of Thailand, on Aedes aegypti. Studies on larvicidal properties of plant extracts against the fourth instar larvae revealed that extracts of 14 species showed evidence of larvicidal activity. Eight out of the 14 plant species showed 100% mosquito larvae mortality. The LC50 values were less than 100μg/mL (4.1μg/ mL-89.4μg/mL). Six plant species were comparatively more effective against the fourth instar larvae at very low concentrations. These extracts demonstrated no or very low toxicity to guppy fish (Poecilia reticulata), which was selected to represent most common non-target organism found in habitats ofAe. aegypti, at concentrations active to mosquito larvae. Three medicinal plants with promising larvicidal activity, having LC50 and LC50 values being 4.1 and 16.4 μg/mL for Mammea siamensis, 20.2 and 34.7 μg/mL forAnethum graveolens and 67.4 and 110.3μg/mL forAnnona muricata, respectively, were used to study the impact of the extracts on the life cycle ofAe. aegypti. These plants affected pupal and adult mortality and also affected the reproductive potential of surviving adults by reducing the number of eggs laid and the percentage of egg hatchability. When each larval stage was treated with successive extracts at the LC50 value, the first instar larvae were found to be very susceptible to A. muricata and the second instar larvae were found to be susceptible to A. graveolens, while the third and fourth instar larvae were found to be susceptible to M. siamensis. These extracts delayed larval development and inhibited adult emergence and had no adverse effects on P. reticulata at LC50 and LC50 values, except for the M. siamensis extract at its LC50 value.  相似文献

We evaluated effects of sublethal copper exposure in 3 different freshwater fish: rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and gibel carp (Carassius auratus gibelio). In a first experiment we exposed these fishes to an equally toxic Cu dose, a Cu level 10 times lower than their 96 h LC50 value: 20, 65, and 150 µg/L Cu. In a second series we exposed them to the same Cu concentration (50 µg/L). Na+/K+-ATPase activity in gill tissue was disturbed differently in rainbow trout then in common and gibel carp. Rainbow trout showed a thorough disruption of plasma ion levels at the beginning of both exposures, whereas common carp and gibel carp displayed effects only after 3 days. Rainbow trout and common carp thyroid hormones experienced adverse effects in the beginning of the exposure. The involvement of prolactin in handling metal stress was reflected in changes of mRNA prolactin receptor concentrations in gill tissue, with an up regulation of this mRNA in rainbow trout and a down regulation in gibel carp, which was more pronounced in the latter. Overall, rainbow trout appeared more sensitive in the beginning of the exposure, however, when it overcame this first challenge, it handled copper exposure in a better manner then common and gibel carp as they showed more long term impacts of Cu exposure.  相似文献

The molluscicidal effects of Bayluscide (niclosamide) were investigated on Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos, the first intermediate host of human liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrini. Lethal concentrations of 50% (LC50) and 95% (LC95) against young and adult males were 0.38 and 0.80, 0.42 and 0.86 ppm, respectively. The LC50 and LC95 against young and adult females were 0.42 and 0.86, 0.46 and 0.97 ppm, respectively. No significant differences in mortality rate between sexes or snail size (p > 0.05) was detected. Bayluscide-related tissue damage in B. siamensis goniomphalos included detachment of cilia of the epithelial layer of the digestive tract and decreased number of calcium cells. In tests of lethal concentrations of Bayluscide on non-target animals, no lethal effect was observed on Filopaludina martensi martensi (Viviparous snail) but high mortality rates were recorded in Puntius gonionotus fingerling, Ricefish (Oryzias mekongensis) and shrimp (Macrobrachium lanchesteri), but lower in guppy fish (Poecilia reticulata) after 24 h exposure. For field trials, sufficient Bayluscide was sprayed in 3 roadside ditches to result in final concentrations of 5, 10 or 20 ppm, with mortality rates on B. siamensis goniomphalos of 10.94, 20.00 and 31.25%, respectively. Non-target snails died in small numbers but no effect was observed in other aquatic vertebrate animals. Field trials of Bayluscide on B. siamensis goniomphalos revealed low mortality rates, suggesting the need for application methods of higher efficacy or that Bayluscide is not suitable for application to operculate snails or snails which are able to escape by burying in mud.  相似文献

The brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens Stål (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), is a notorious pest on rice in Asia and has evolved serious resistance to traditional chemical insecticides in recent years. Triflumezopyrim, a newly commercialized mesoionic insecticide, exhibited an excellent control effect on sucking insects, including N. lugens. However, the effects of triflumezopyrim on the reproduction of N. lugens have not yet been fully elucidated. In this study, we investigated the impacts of different concentrations of triflumezopyrim (LC10, LC50 and LC90) on the reproduction and the reproduction related genes of N. lugens exposure to the insecticide via systemic and contact route. The results indicated that the preoviposition periods of N. lugens females in the LC50 and LC90 triflumezopyrim-treated groups (♀ t × ♂ t) were prolonged in contact toxicity treatment, compared with control (acetone treatment). The fecundities for three pair combinations (♀ c ×♂ t, ♀ t ×♂ c and ♀ t ×♂ t) treated with LC50 and LC90 concentrations of triflumezopyrim showed a significant decrease compared to water/acetone-treated control via contact and systemic route. No significant effects of LC10 triflumezopyrim on preoviposition period and fecundity were found in contact and systemic toxicity treatments. However, the triflumezopyrim did not influence the egg hatchability. By microscope observation, the LC50 and LC90 triflumezopyrim impended the ovarian development in females. qRT-PCR analysis showed that the vitellogenin (NlVg) relative expression level of female adults exposed to LC50 and LC90 triflumezopyrim decreased by 30.3 – 39.5% in two toxicity treatments. The titers of another reproduction related hormones juvenile hormone III (JH III) in LC50 and LC90 triflumezopyrim-treatments were 27.4% and 25.8% lower than control in contact toxicity treatment and 27.08% and 37.18% lower than control in systemic toxicity treatment. In summary, these results suggested that the median lethal and high lethal concentrations of triflumezopyrim inhibited the reproduction and reduced the expression of NlVg and JH III in N. lugens. This study provided a reference for the efficient and scientific utilization of triflumezopyrim in the field.  相似文献

Aims: To investigate the effect of lactic acid (LA), copper (II), and monolaurin as natural antimicrobials against Cronobacter in infant formula. Methods and Results: The effect of LA (0·1, 0·2 and 0·3% v/v), copper (II) (10, 50 and 100 μg ml?1) and monolaurin (1000, 2000, and 3000 μg ml?1) suspended into tween‐80? or dissolved in ethanol against Cronobacter in infant formula was investigated. Reconstituted infant formula and powdered infant formula were inoculated with five strains of Cronobacter spp. at the levels of c. 1 × 106 CFU ml?1 and 1 × 103 CFU g?1, respectively. LA at 0·2% v/v had a bacteriostatic effect on Cronobacter growth, whereas 0·3% v/v LA resulted in c. 3 log10 reduction. Copper (II) at the levels of 50 μg ml?1 and 100 μg ml?1 elicited c. 1 and 2 log10 reductions, respectively. The combination of 0·2% LA and 50 μg ml?1 copper (II) resulted in a complete elimination of the organism. Monolaurin exhibited a slight inhibitory activity against Cronobacter (c. 1·5 log10 difference) compared to the control when ethanol was used to deliver monolaurin. Conclusions: A complete elimination of Cronobacter was obtained when a combination of sublethal concentrations of LA (0·2%) and copper (II) (50 μg ml?1) was used. Significance and Impact of the Study: The use of the synergistic interactive combination of LA and copper (II) could be beneficial to control Cronobacter in the infant formula industry.  相似文献

In the present study, six monoterpenes [(?)-citronellal, p-cymene, (?)-menthone, α-pinene, α-terpinene, and (?)-terpinen-4-ol] and two phenylpropenes [trans-cinnamaldehyde and eugenol] were evaluated for their contact and fumigant toxicities against Sitophilus oryzae adults. The effects of these compounds on the mortality of S. oryzae adults in stored wheat and their inhibitory effects on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and adenosine triphosphatases (ATPases) were examined. The tested compounds showed varying degrees of contact toxicity, with trans-cinnamaldehyde (LC50 = 0.01 mg/cm2) being the most potent compound, followed by (?)-menthone (LC50 = 0.013 mg/cm2) and eugenol (LC50 = 0.015 mg/cm2). In a fumigant toxicity assay, the monoterpenes α-terpinene, p-cymene, and (?)-menthone showed the highest toxicities (LC50 = 50.79, 52.37, and 54.08 μl/L air, respectively). Trans-cinnamaldehyde, (?)-citronellal, and eugenol were the least toxic (LC50 > 100 μl/L air). In general, the oxygenated compounds exhibited high contact toxicities while the hydrocarbon compounds exhibited high fumigant toxicities. When tested for their insecticidal activities against S. oryzae in stored wheat, trans-cinnamaldehyde was found to be the most potent compound, with 73.9% mortality at an application rate of 0.5 g/kg and complete mortality (100%) at 1 and 5 g/kg after 1 week of treatment. All of the tested compounds showed AChE inhibition, although (?)-citronellal and trans-cinnamaldehyde presented the strongest enzyme inhibition, with IC50 values of 18.40 and 18.93 mM, respectively. On the other hand, (?)-terpinene-4-ol exhibited the highest inhibition of ATPases, followed by α-pinene and α-terpinene.

The global rate of heavy metal pollution is rapidly increasing in various habitats. Anopheles malaria vector species (Diptera: Culicidae) appear to tolerate many aquatic habitats with metal pollutants, despite their normal proclivity for ‘clean’ water (i.e. low levels of organic matter). Investigations were conducted to establish whether there are biological costs for tolerance to heavy metals in Anopheles gambiae Giles sensu stricto and to assess the potential impact of heavy metal pollution on mosquito ecology. Anopheles gambiae s.s. were selected for cadmium, copper or lead tolerance through chronic exposure of immature stages to solutions of the metals for three successive generations. Biological costs were assessed in the fourth generation by horizontal life table analysis. Tolerance in larvae to cadmium (as cadmium chloride, CdCl2), copper [as copper II nitrate hydrate, Cu(NO3)2 2.5 H2O] and lead [as lead II nitrate, Pb(NO3)2], monitored by changes in LC50 concentrations of the metals, changed from 6.07 µg/L, 12.42 µg/L and 493.32 µg/L to 4.45 µg/L, 25.02 µg/L and 516.69 µg/L, respectively, after three generations of exposure. The metal‐selected strains had a significantly lower magnitude of egg viability, larval and pupal survivorship, adult emergence, fecundity and net reproductive rate than the control strain. The population doubling times were significantly longer and the instantaneous birth rates lower in most metal‐selected strains relative to the control strain. Our results suggest that although An. gambiae s.s. displays the potential to develop tolerance to heavy metals, particularly copper, this may occur at a significant biological cost, which can adversely affect its ecological fitness.  相似文献
