The scent of a novel male can elicit pregnancy block in recently mated female mice (Mus musculus), a phenomenon known as the Bruce effect. Despite abundant literature on the Bruce effect in rodents, it remains unclear whether males related to a female’s original mate can induce the Bruce effect in out-bred, communally living mice. We investigated this question using Kunming (KM) male mice of varying genetic relatedness. Recently mated females were subjected to three treatments: exposure to the urine of the mate, urine of the mate’s male littermate, and urine of a male unrelated to the mate. It was found that the urine of male littermates of the females’ mates did not elicit more pregnancy block than that of the females’ mates. However, the urine of novel males caused a higher rate of female miscarriage than that of the females’ mates. By using a habituation-dishabituation paradigm, we found that unmated females could discriminate the urine scents of two male littermates from those of a novel male unrelated to the littermates. To understand how females use urinary cues to discriminate between males with different genetic relationships, we used gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to examine the volatile composition of urine from males with varying relatedness. It was found that KM male littermates shared similar volatile compositions in their urine. Our results suggest that male kinship reduces the Bruce effect in female KM mice, and provide additional evidence for mate choice being partly mediated by the Bruce effect in KM mice.  相似文献

The effects of castration of both resident and intruder rats on territorial aggressive behavior were studied. The results suggest that residence in a home cage is more important than gonadal status in determining the outcome of an aggressive encounter. Resident rats were more likely to be dominant especially if they were intact. Intact residents directed less aggressive behavior toward castrated intruders than toward intact intruders. Intruder rats generally showed low levels of aggressive behavior and were only dominant when the resident had been castrated. Thus, the aggressive behavior of a male rat depends upon both his gonadal status and that of his opponent.  相似文献

Due to their aggressive nature, male mice are less frequently used than female mice in biomedical research. When aggressive males are being used, individual housing is common practice. The question arises whether this is an acceptable housing for a social species. The present study was designed to gain more insight into the nature of inter-male social contact and into the potential of a form of environmental enrichment (nesting material) to compensate for the lack of social contact. In a series of tests, we analysed whether male mice of different ages preferred to spend time (1) near a familiar cage mate versus an empty cage, or (2) near to a familiar cage mate versus direct contact with nesting material (tissues). Dwelling time in each of the test cages and sleeping sites was recorded, as was the behaviour of the test mice. Results indicated that when other conditions were similar, male mice preferred to sleep in close proximity to their familiar cage mate. Furthermore, the need to engage in active social behaviour increased with age. Tissues were used to a large extent for sleeping and sleep-related behaviour. It is concluded that single housing in order to avoid aggression between male mice is a solution with evident negative consequences for the animals. When individual housing is inevitable due to excessive aggressive behaviour, the presence of nesting material could partly compensate for the deprivation of social contact.  相似文献

The preputial glands of house mice express the gene for the fifth melanocortin receptor (MC5-R) and are a primary source of urinary pheromones involved in inter-male aggression. A 'resident-intruder' behavioral model was used to compare the responses of resident males to urine from mice with an engineered disruption of the fifth melanocortin receptor (MC5-RKO) with residents' responses to urine from wild-type mice (WT). Each type of urine was presented in combination with a castrated intruder male to provide the appropriate biological context. Resident males responded with a longer latency to bite when the urine was from gonadally intact WT males compared with urine from MC5-RKO mice. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that activation of the fifth melanocortin receptor in the preputial glands of male house mice causes excretion of urinary pheromones that delay aggressive responses by other males.  相似文献

Two groups of 12 mature male Swiss Morini strain mice were matched for aggressiveness on the basis of their response to anosmic docile male intruders after 24 h individual housing in a large defensible cage. One group was subsequently individually housed without disturbance for a further 12 days whereas the second group was exposed to a new anosmic intruder every 3 days over this same period. All mice were subsequently retested against anosmic intruders for a 10 min period. Animals which had had the opportunity to fight repeatedly showed more attack than individuals lacking such experience. A second experiment contrasted the responses of dominant isolates to the same or a different anosmic intruder, 10 min after a successful attack. Familiar intruders were attacked less vigorously than unfamiliar mice. It seems likely that the defeated mouse becomes less potent as a stimulus eliciting attack as the resident becomes habituated to it. Conversely, unfamiliar intruders evoke aggressive reactions by residents despite the prolonged fights they had had before final testing. These experiments provide little support for the appetence view of aggression in mice (i.e. the view that aggressiveness is augmented by depriving the animal of the opportunity to fight) or the view that this phenomenon is simply a consequence of “social deprivation”.  相似文献

Urine is involved in sexual communication in New World monkeys and lemurs, but most studies of the role of olfaction in sexual communication in Old World monkeys have focused on vaginal secretions rather than urine. We investigated whether female urine promotes male sexual behaviors (approaches and inspections of genital area) in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata). We used a sequential presentation paradigm in behavioral experiments, presenting unfamiliar female urine and control cotton swabs to males living in a social group with cycling females. We tested whether males (N = 3) showed more processing behaviors (licking, sniffing, tasting) toward female urine (22 stimuli per male from prefertile, fertile, and postfertile phases, based on urinary estrone and progesterone conjugate profiles) than control odor (8 stimuli per male). We then compared male sexual behaviors toward resident females pre- and post-exposure to stimuli and in relation to the females’ reproductive status (perifertile, nonfertile, and pregnancy periods, based on fecal estrone and progesterone conjugate profiles). We found that males showed significantly more processing behaviors toward urine stimuli than to controls but that male behavior did not vary across urine samples from prefertile, fertile, and postfertile phases. Exposure to unfamiliar female urine stimuli did not modulate male approaches to and inspections of resident females at any stage of the female reproductive cycle. Although our study is limited by its small sample size, the results suggest that female urine contains compounds that males detect, but we found no evidence that female urine is related to male sexual behaviors.  相似文献

Aggression occurs not only in males but also in females, however, under different sex-specific stimulus and endocrine conditions. After being housed with males, female rats exhibit frequent and intense aggressive behavior toward unfamiliar rats. However, the female residents primarily attack female intruder rats, while the male residents attack males and not females. Altering the hormonal condition of the intruders can modify the behavior that they provoke from the residents. Castration of the male intruders reduces aggression from male residents, but ovariectomy of the female intruders does not alter the behavior of the female residents. Treatment of the gonadectomized intruders with gonadal steroids significantly alters the response of the male residents. Resident-intruder aggressive behavior depends on the presence of the testes in the male residents but not on the ovaries or on lactation in the female residents. Even 7 weeks after ovariectomy the female residents continue to show aggressive behavior toward female intruders. In the same time period the castrated male residents show a marked decrease in aggressive and sexual behavior.  相似文献

The influence of progesterone on sexual and aggressive behaviors during aggressive encounters was investigated in pairs of TP-treated male and female rats. Gonadectomized females, chronically injected with testosterone propionate (TP), showed low but consistent levels of feminine sexual behavior which alternated with aggression. Progesterone when given in addition to TP facilitated receptive and proceptive behaviors, but reduced levels of aggression. In TP-treated males, levels of aggression were the same as observed in TP-treated females. However, TP-treated males seldomly showed sexual behavior during aggressive encounters and additional treatment with progesterone did not affect their behavior. After the aggression tests, animals were tested in a social preference test in which an ovariectomized female cage mate and the opponent from the aggressive encounter served as incentives. Positive correlations between levels of aggression and social preference for an opponent were found in both sexes, although correlations only reached statistical significance when progesterone was given in addition to TP. These correlations were found in both sexes, despite the fact that group analysis revealed pronounced sex differences in social preference: males preferred to spend their time near ovariectomized female cage mates, whereas females divided their time equally among female cage mates and opponents.  相似文献

Conventional solitary caging for research rabbits precludes many postural and social behaviors. Several studies that have investigated enrichment strategies for rabbit does have found intact males usually too aggressive for paired or group housing. This study investigated the possibilities that male siblings will remain compatible if never separated from birth and that castration will improve compatibility among young sibling male rabbits. As a side benefit of pair housing for all rabbits, the larger cages (modified dog cages) allowed rest and other postures not possible in conventional single cages. In addition, there was no evidence of the stereotypies observed among individually housed rabbits. Castrated, post-weanling, male, Flemish Giant x Giant Chinchilla rabbit littermates demonstrated a significantly higher level of living together compatibly than did the intact controls. All rabbits chose to rest in close proximity or contact, although this preference was stronger in castrated males. During puberty, intact males displayed more serious aggression. We conclude that young adult littermate rabbits can live compatibly as pairs and that castration improves compatibility among males. Paired rabbits exhibit many postures and behaviors that are not possible in the small, solitary cages currently listed as minimum recommendations.  相似文献

Studies of the role of testosterone (T) in birds have typically focused on sexual or aggressive behaviours of males during the breeding period, but males of nonmigratory species may invest in mate and territory long before breeding, and the influence of T in facilitating nonbreeding-season behaviours is poorly understood. We gave free-living male downy woodpeckers, Picoides pubescens, T-implants during the winter to determine whether elevated levels of T increased a male's ability to exclusively occupy territory-based resources, and whether elevated T strengthened a male's investment in an existing pair bond relationship. We also explored how a female's foraging efficiency might be affected by her mate's behaviour if he had elevated T. We found little difference between control and T-implanted males with regard to home range exclusivity. Surprisingly, male-male display rates were significantly lower in T-implanted males than in controls. Regarding male-female interactions, T-implanted males that experienced high incursion rates from other males maintained more frequent spatial association with their mate, suggesting that T facilitates male behaviours that could restrict the mate's access to other male birds. Female mates of T-males showed reduced foraging rates, but because male-female aggression was similar between treatment groups, the cause for this reduction is unknown. The results indicate that exogenous T during winter affects a variety of behaviours in male woodpeckers, and proximate influences on pair bond maintenance in winter may be a fruitful avenue for future research.  相似文献

The influence of female mice (Mus musculus) on intermale aggression and the female choice between dominant and subordinate males were tested. Normal male mice were paired with a castrated male or a female. Two pairs of the same kind were housed together after acclimation for 3 days in half (home cage) of the apparatus, which was composed of eight cages connected by tunnels. One of the two normal males became dominant. The dominant males became more aggressive in the presence of females than in the presence of castrated males. The two normal males dwelt in their own home cages. The two females dwelt together and preferred to dwell in the home cages of the dominant male. Members of a social group should attempt to maximize their fitness by maintaining an optimal group composition. Allowing an immigrant into the group may be beneficial or costly depending on the characteristics of the immigrant as well as the composition of the group. Therefore, we examined behavioral interactions between pine voles to test three functional hypotheses proposed to explain behavior of residents toward non‐residents: the resource defense, mate defense, and benefit of extra‐pair copulation hypotheses. To test these, we examined the effects of age, sexual experience and sex of non‐residents as well as the effects of sex of residents on the behavior of residents. Neither male nor female residents showed affiliative behavior toward non‐residents. Residents were more aggressive toward non‐residents than vice versa. The frequency of same‐sex aggression was greater than opposite‐sex aggression for male residents and this aggression was directed at adult male non‐residents to a greater degree than at subadult males. Resident males were least aggressive toward adult females. We found no differences in the behavior of females toward subadults, sexually naive adult non‐residents or sexually experienced adult non‐residents. Females also displayed similar amounts of aggression toward male and female non‐residents. Therefore, for males, aggression may function in defense of a mate while for females, aggression functions in resource defense. For both sexes, aggression is likely to play a role in the regulation of group composition.  相似文献

Territorial male bullfrogs ( Rana catesbeiana) display lower levels of aggression toward familiar territorial neighbors compared to unfamiliar individuals based on the perception of individual differences in vocalizations. Stimulus-specific habituation elicited by repeated exposures to a neighbor's vocalizations is believed to play a role in mediating the low levels of aggression between neighbors. The present study describes habituation in multiple components of the bullfrog territorial aggressive response and examines whether these separate response components habituate at similar or different rates. In response to repeated broadcasts of synthetic bullfrog advertisement calls in a field playback experiment, the numbers of aggressive calls and movements, the latency to the first aggressive call, and the distance approached toward the playback speaker exhibited significant response decrements that developed at nearly identical rates. All four responses exhibited recovery upon subsequent broadcasts of a novel stimulus simulating a different individual. In contrast, the number of advertisement calls did not exhibit significant decrements with repeated playbacks. The patterns of stimulus-specific response decrement were inconsistent with explanations such as sensory adaptation, effector fatigue, non-specific changes in motivation, and a simple form of auditory habituation. Possible mechanisms for the observed plasticity in aggression are discussed in the context of anuran communication.  相似文献

Interactions of overwintered females with conspecifics (??5 days) on familiar territories were studied experimentally. In interactions of the resident females with unfamiliar overwintered females (28 experiments), there were no differences related to the reproductive status of both parties. Between the behavior of the residents and aliens, there were no significant differences, except the refusals of contacts??and aliens had more of it. Identification and affiliative behavior and the presence of ritualized aggression was noted. There was little direct aggression. Females were sharply aggressive toward the overwintered males (23 experiments) regardless of their reproductive status. Males tried to avoid contacts. Identification and affiliative behavior were rare. Toward yearlings (25 experiments), females that participated in reproduction were aggressive (direct aggression prevailed) but singles (9 experiments) were not.  相似文献

攻击行为是增强个体生存能力和提高繁殖成功机会的最有效竞争方式之一。为理解攻击行为对小型哺乳动物能量学收支策略的影响,以具有独居且好斗习性的黑线仓鼠为研究对象,基于居留者-入侵者(resident-intruder)争斗方式将入侵鼠放入居留鼠笼中(10min / d),21d后测定能量摄入、基础代谢率(BMR),分析BMR和内脏器官重量的相关性。结果显示,攻击行为使居留组BMR增加了26.2%,使摄入能和消化能显著增加。居留组体重、胴体重,以及某些代谢活性器官(肝脏、肺脏、肾脏、胃、小肠和盲肠)重量显著增加,且这些器官重量与BMR显著正相关。结果表明,增加能量摄入和BMR是黑线仓鼠应对攻击行为的主要能量学收支策略;在种内个体之间强烈的攻击行为可能是该鼠维持较高水平BMR的原因之一。  相似文献

Dominant male rats were separated from their colonies and subordinate residents were tested for aggression after a two week period. Subordinate animals showed significant increases in body weight and aggressive behavior toward intruders. Replacement of the previously dominant male led to rank reversals in three of six colonies. To assess whether two weeks of separation from the dominant male was necessary for subordinate males to exhibit aggression towards conspecifics, another intruder test was given following an additional two weeks of social housing. At the conclusion of this test, the more aggressive resident was removed and a naive intruder was immediately introduced into the colony with the subordinate male resident and again at 1, 5, and 10 day intervals. Aggressive posturing by the subordinate resident increased immediately following the removal of the dominant male, and remained at a high level throughout the subsequent intruder tests. In contrast, biting was initially low but increased steadily throughout the period of separation. These findings demonstrated that social or situational changes within a colony can greatly influence the aggression of subordinate males.  相似文献

The endocrine control mechanisms for female mammalian aggression have been largely unstudied. Although it has been proposed that androgens may modulate female aggressive behavior in a similar manner to males, very little conclusive evidence exists. Previous work in male marmosets found that post‐encounter increases in testosterone (T) were dependent on the intensity of aggression displayed during the aggressive encounter. We exposed female marmosets (Callithrix kuhlii), a monogamous and biparental primate, to aggressive interactions with unfamiliar intruders. Individual female marmosets exhibited changes in T and estradiol (E2) that are associated with aggressiveness dependent on the intensity of aggression displayed as well as their role during the encounter. Resident females exhibited increased E2 immediately following an encounter in which they displayed high rates of aggression. If resident females received high rates of aggression from the intruder, the resident displayed increased T 24 hr following the encounter. Interestingly, if the female was an intruder in the encounter, the intensity of her aggression was associated with increased cortisol immediately following the trials, whereas received aggression was associated with increased T and E2 immediately following the trial. Female primates do exhibit situation‐dependent changes in gonadal steroids in association with aggression that may serve to prime them for future aggressive interactions. Am. J. Long-lasting psychoemotional influence consisting of permanent stay of females with aggressive males separated with a perforated transparent partition in the same cage, and daily presence of females during intermale confrontations, is negative toward the females' behavior estimated in the some ethological tests. Elevated plus-maze and open field tests reveal an increased anxiety and inhibited exploratory behavior and motor activity. Within a month, the decreased females' reactions near the partition to both familiar and unfamiliar males testify to decreased communicativeness. In two months from the beginning, intermale confrontations become uninteresting for females too, as it was shown in the partition test. Abnormalities in the pain sensitivity estimated in the hot-plate test are found in females after the psychoemotional influence. More than half of all females have a prolonged diestrous stage of the estrous cycle. Moreover, after the psychoemotional influence females lose the capability to recognize intact female and male littermates as well as aggressive and submissive males. Taken together the results suggest that long-lasting psychoemotional influence can cause the anxiety-depression states in females.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) on aggression under different social and environmental conditions. Three AAS were tested in gonadally intact male rats: testosterone propionate (TP), nandrolone (ND), and stanozolol (ST). Doses of 5 mg/kg were given 5 times/week, with gonadally intact controls receiving vehicle only (propylene glycol). Animals received six weekly tests under each condition in a counterbalanced order. Results show that the three AAS differed in their ability to elicit aggression. Males receiving TP were more aggressive than controls, ND males were similar to controls, and ST males were less aggressive than controls. In the social and environmental provocation tests TP-treated males were more aggressive than other groups, but were able to discriminate between intact and castrated opponents and between their home cage and a neutral cage. In the environmental provocation test, TP males were also more aggressive against opponents when tested in the opponent's home cage. It is suggested that chronic exposure to high levels of TP does not eliminate the ability to discriminate between social or environmental cues, as might be expected if it induces a " 'roid rage." However, TP does increase the likelihood that the animal will respond with aggression/dominance in a provoking situation. All three AAS variably affected serum testosterone and LH levels, as well as testes, seminal vesicle, and prostate weights. No effect on body weight was observed.  相似文献
