Gender differences in the functional hemispheric organization during memorization of dichotically presented verbal information in the situation of focused or non-focused attention were studied. Analysis of EEG coherence reactivity in six frequency bands (4-30 Hz) showed that the focused attention to stimuli presented to one ear as compared to divided attention between both ears was accompanied by an increase in the interhemispheric interaction in the thetal frequency band between the frontal cortical areas in men and between the parietoccipital areas in women. In the betal band, the focused attention was associated with a contralateral increase in the intrahemispheric coherence in men, whereas no significant difference in the intrahemispheric coherence was found in women. On the basis of coherence changes in the thetal and betal bands depending on the attention conditions together with the obtained correlation between coherence reactivity and word-recall scores, it may be suggested that verbal memorization in men is associated, predominantly, with the regulation from the anterior system of attention and from the posterior system in women.  相似文献

A hemispheric interaction during verbal creative thinking was studied by the analysis of EEG coherence in the band of 4-30 Hz. 18 males and 21 females (right-handed university students) participaited in the experiments. Independently of gender, the performance of Remote Associates Task was accompanied by an increase in coherence in the theta1 and beta2 frequency bands as compared to the states of rest and the letter-fluency and simple associate's tasks. Successful search for original word associates as compared to generation of standard words was accompanied by a local increase in the interhemispheric coherence of the beta2 rhythm mostly in the parietotemporal cortex. In creative men, the increase in the hemispheric interaction efficient for a search for original words was focused in the frontal and temporal loci of the right hemisphere and in the left occipital locus, whereas in creative women the increase in coherence was observed in the left frontal and temporal regions. Creative men differed from non-creative ones by higher inter- and intrahemispheric coherence and were similar to women in the level of hemispheric interaction. The cortical distribution of foci of interhemispheric coherence reactivity indicates that the cortical organization of verbal functions depends on both sex and creativity of men and women.  相似文献

A selection procedure with three rules, high efficiency, low individual variability, and low redundancy, was developed to screen electroencephalogram (EEG) features for predicting behavioral alertness levels. A total of 24 EEG features were derived from temporal, frequency spectral, and statistical analyses. Behavioral alertness levels were quantified by correct rates of performance on an auditory and a visual vigilance task, separately. In the auditory task study, a subset of three EEG features, the relative spectral amplitudes in the alpha (alpha%, 8-13 Hz) and theta (theta%, 4-8 Hz) bands, and the mean frequency of the EEG spectrum (MF), was found to be the best combination for predicting the auditory alertness level. In the visual task study, the mean frequency of the beta band (Fbeta, 13-32 Hz) was the only EEG feature selected. The application of an averaging subwindow procedure within a moving time window to EEG analysis increased the predictive power of EEG features and decreased the disturbing effect of movement artifacts on the EEG data.  相似文献

The resting EEG is a dynamic index of cortical activation, cognitive function and consciousness and is therefore an intermediate phenotype for many behaviors in which arousal is implicated such as anxiety and alcoholism. We performed a dense whole genome linkage scan using 3878 unlinked SNPs in a large pedigree derived from a population isolate sample of 328 Plains American Indians. Alpha (8-13 Hz), theta (4-8 Hz) and beta (13-30 Hz) EEG power was heritable (0.58-0.27) and stable over a 2 year period (r = 0.82-0.53). Genetic correlations between frequency bands were high (0.75). Linkage peaks for EEG power in all three frequency bands converged on chromosome 5q13-14 with genome-wide significant LOD scores of 3.5 (empirical p<0.0001) for alpha and beta power. A logical candidate gene, corticotropin releasing hormone-binding protein (CRH-BP), was located at the apex of these convergent linkage peaks. CRH-BP was significantly associated with alpha power in the Plains Indians and also in a replication sample of 188 Caucasians. Moreover, the same SNPs and haplotypes, located within the CRH-BP haplotype block, were also associated with anxiety disorders in the Plains Indians and alcohol use disorders in the Caucasians. CRH-BP modulates CRH which influences cortical and hippocampal EEG activity and is the primary mediator of the neuroendocrine stress response. Our results suggest a likely role for CRH-BP in stress-related alcoholism and highlight the use of the resting EEG as an intermediate phenotype for arousal-related behaviors such as anxiety and addiction.  相似文献

Two different groups of normal college students were formed: One (the alpha group) received 10-Hz audiovisual (AV) stimulation for 8 minutes, and the other (beta) group received 22-Hz AV stimulation for 8 minutes. EEG power in the alpha (8-13 Hz) and beta (13-30 Hz) bands was FFT-extracted before, during, and for 24 minutes after stimulation. It was found that baseline (prestimulation) alpha and beta power predict the effects of stimulation, leading to individual differences in responsivity. High-baseline alpha participants showed either no entrainment or relatively prolonged entrainment with alpha stimulation. Low-baseline participants showed transient entrainment. Baseline alpha also predicted the direction of change in alpha with beta stimulation. Baseline beta and alpha predicted beta band response to beta stimulation, which was transient enhancement in some participants, inhibition in others. Some participants showed relatively prolonged beta enhancement with beta stimulation.  相似文献

The EEG mapping study tested age-related changes in power of EEG rhythms from delta to gamma ranges under healthy cognitive aging associated with preserved cognitive abilities and involvement in complex professional activity. 32 subjects of higher age group (HAG, mean age 65.1 +/- 1.18, 14 men and 18 women) and 33 subjects of lower age group (LAG mean age 22.1 +/- 0.38, 18 men and 15 women) participated in the study. Mean power of slow (delta, theta and alpha2) activity decreased and of fast activity (beta, gamma) increased as subject age increased. Compared to subjects of LAG subjects of HAG displayed a reduction in heterogeneity of EEG activity across recording sites. Centro-temporal gradients of power for frequency ranges from delta to beta2 and frontoparietal gradients and hemispheric asymmetry for alpha and beta1 rhythms were smoothed in subjects of HAG. These results suggest that observed age-related changes in baseline EEG may be the prerequisite for compensatory neural recruitment that may be associated as with allocation of more resources in cognitive processes so with reorganization of cortical networks including areas susceptible to physiological changes with aging.  相似文献

To confirm the existence of an ongoing electroencephalogram (EEG) pattern that is truly suggestive of pain, tonic heat pain was induced by small heat pulses at 1?°C above the pain threshold and compared to slightly less intense tonic non-painful heat pulses at 1?°C below the pain threshold. Twenty healthy subjects rated the sensation intensity during thermal stimulation. Possible confounding effects of attention were thoroughly controlled for by testing in four conditions: (1) focus of attention directed ipsilateral or (2) contralateral to the side of the stimulation, (3) control without a side preference, and (4) no control of attention at all. EEG was recorded via eight leads according to the 10/20 convention. Absolute power was computed for the frequency bands delta (0.5–4?Hz), theta (4–8?Hz), alpha1 (8–11?Hz), alpha2 (11–14?Hz), beta1 (14–25?Hz), and beta2 (25–35?Hz). Ratings were clearly distinct between the heat and pain conditions and suggestive for heat and pain sensations. Manipulation of attention proved to be successful by producing effects on the ratings and on the EEG activity (with lower ratings and lower EEG activity (theta, beta1, 2) over central areas for side-focused attention). During pain stimulation, lower central alpha1 and alpha2 activity and higher right-parietal and right-occipital delta power were observed compared to heat stimulation. This EEG pattern was not influenced by the manipulation of attention. Since the two types of stimuli (pain, heat) were subjectively felt differently although stimulation intensities were nearby, we conclude that this EEG pattern is clearly suggestive of pain.  相似文献

The EEG records of 39 healthy adolescents and 45 age-matched schizophrenic patients were analyzed. The broad-band EEG spectral analysis and segmental analysis of the alpha-activity revealed significant differences between the groups. Schizophrenics differed in a decreased spectral power for the alpha2 and betal frequency bands and increased power for the delta and theta bands. Also, in schizophrenic adolescents, quasi-stationary alpha-rhythm segments were longer, and within-segmental EEG amplitudes were higher than in the healthy subjects; the amplitude variability and the steepness of transitions between neighbor segments were increased. The results of the EEG segmental analysis suggest a disintegration of local cortical neuronal ensembles in schizophrenia.  相似文献

The functions of interhemispheric EEG coherence were analyzed in 12 healthy subjects with the right individual profile of motor and sensor asymmetry and 7 subjects with the left profile in 2 experimental conditions: the state of rest and photostimulation of the central visual field. It was shown that in the rest condition the right-handed subjects have the higher values of EEG coherence in the thetal band in symmetrical frontal and central areas than the left-handed. These differences decreased for the frontal and central areas during activation caused by photostimulation but increased in the theta 2 and betal bands in symmetrical temporal areas (the coherence in the left-handed being higher). The difference in the EEG coherence between conditions was greater for the frontal and central areas in the right-handed than in the left-handed, especially, for the theta 1 and theta 2 bands. These findings suggest that the left-handed subjects have a less developed hierarchy of subcortical control of the functional state shifts than the right-handed.  相似文献

Gender-related differences in EEG patterns during creative visual thinking were investigated in 10 men and 10 women. The spectral power density was analyzed in the range of 4-30 Hz. Gender differences in the hemispheric asymmetry of theta1-rhythm desynchronization were found: females demonstrated greater desynchronization in the right hemisphere than in the left hemisphere, whereas no asymmetry was revealed in males. Only in women numerous negative correlations between creativity indices and task-induced theta1 desynchronization were found.  相似文献

This article deals with a new approach in sleep characterization that combines EEG source localisation methods with standard frequency analysis of multielectrode EEGs. First, we describe the theoretical methodology and the benefits that we get from a three-dimensional image (LORETA) of the cerebral activity related to a frequency band. Then, this new application is used as signal-processing technique on sleep EEG recordings obtained from young male adults using four frequency bands (delta 0.5-3.5 Hz, theta 4.0-7.5 Hz, alpha 8.0-12.5 Hz and beta 13.0-32.0 Hz) in different sleep stages. Finally, we show that the obtained results are highly consistent with other physiological assessments (standard EEG mapping, functional magnetic resonance imaging, etc.), but give us more realistic additional information on the generators of electromagnetic cerebral activity.  相似文献

Event-related synchronization (ERS) and desynchronization (ERD) in delta, theta1, theta2, alpha1, alpha2, beta1, beta2, beta3, and gamma were measured in 20 healthy right-handed subjects in response to IAPS stimuli with low, moderate, and high arousal reactions. The 62-channel EEG was simultaneously recorded while subjects viewed sequentially presented pictures and subjectively rated them after each presentation. The results show that emotionally loaded stimuli induced higher ERS in the delta, theta1, theta2, beta1, beta3, and gamma bands along with combined ERD and ERS effects in alpha2 band. As to hemispheric asymmetries, the effects of emotional arousal were restricted not only to right parietal (theta1 and theta2 ERS, alpha2 ERD) but also to left frontal (theta2 ERS) regions. In terms of affective chronometry, lower theta was the first to catch the affective salience of incoming stimuli (time window 0-600 ms after the stimulus input). For theta2, alpha2, and gamma bands this process was delayed to 600-1000 ms.  相似文献

The relationships between some characteristics of EEG topographic maps and personality traits (extraversion-introversion, sensation-intuition, thinking-feeling, judging-impulsiveness) by the Keirsey's Type Inventory were studied in 46 17-20-year-old men). The most considerable distinctions in the spatial organization of the EEG were observed between the functions sensation and intuition. The high-sensation responders were characterized by higher EEG power in the theta 1, 2 and alpha 1-bands in all derivations and higher coherence (especially in the theta 1, 2 bands most expressed in the frontoparietal areas) as compared with the high-intuition responders. The expression of extraversion was positively correlated with coherence values in the theta 1, 2 and negatively correlated with coherence in the alpha 1, 2 bands. Characteristic EEG patterns for other types of personality traits were also described. The results suggest that some characteristics of brain maps reflect the individual psychological features determined on the basis of Jung's typology.  相似文献

Background

EEG studies of working memory (WM) have demonstrated load dependent frequency band modulations. FMRI studies have localized load modulated activity to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC), and posterior parietal cortex (PPC). Recently, an EEG-fMRI study found that low frequency band (theta and alpha) activity negatively correlated with the BOLD signal during the retention phase of a WM task. However, the coupling of higher (beta and gamma) frequencies with the BOLD signal during WM is unknown.

Methodology

In 16 healthy adult subjects, we first investigated EEG-BOLD signal correlations for theta (5–7 Hz), alpha1 (8–10), alpha2 (10–12 Hz), beta1 (13–20), beta2 (20–30 Hz), and gamma (30–40 Hz) during the retention period of a WM task with set size 2 and 5. Secondly, we investigated whether load sensitive brain regions are characterised by effects that relate frequency bands to BOLD signals effects.

Principal Findings

We found negative theta-BOLD signal correlations in the MPFC, PPC, and cingulate cortex (ACC and PCC). For alpha1 positive correlations with the BOLD signal were found in ACC, MPFC, and PCC; negative correlations were observed in DLPFC, PPC, and inferior frontal gyrus (IFG). Negative alpha2-BOLD signal correlations were observed in parieto-occipital regions. Beta1-BOLD signal correlations were positive in ACC and negative in precentral and superior temporal gyrus. Beta2 and gamma showed only positive correlations with BOLD, e.g., in DLPFC, MPFC (gamma) and IFG (beta2/gamma). The load analysis revealed that theta and—with one exception—beta and gamma demonstrated exclusively positive load effects, while alpha1 showed only negative effects.

Conclusions

We conclude that the directions of EEG-BOLD signal correlations vary across brain regions and EEG frequency bands. In addition, some brain regions show both load sensitive BOLD and frequency band effects. Our data indicate that lower as well as higher frequency brain oscillations are linked to neurovascular processes during WM.  相似文献

Electroencephalograms (EEG) were recorder in 19 standard derivations in 88 healthy subjects, while they were in the states: rest with eyes open; memorization (learning) of verbal bilingual semantic pairs (Latin and Russian languages); the retrieval of the rote information from memory (control). We compared estimates of EEG coherence in these states for the frequency bands theta (4-7 Hz), alpha-1 (7-10 Hz), alpha-2 (10-13 Hz), beta-1 (13-18 Hz), beta-2 (18-30 Hz), gamma (30-40 Hz). When compared with the rest most strongly expressed: for memorization a decrease of coherence in the pairs of derivations from frontal and central areas of the cortex in the EEG frequency bands; for retrieval an increase of coherence in interhemispheric derivation pairs of pariental-occipital region in majority of the frequency bands. For the retrieval also increases of coherence in the beta2 and gamma bands, along with coherence decreases at low frequencies take place in pairs formed by derivations from the parieto-occipital region with derivations from the frontal and the central ones. Dynamics of EEG coherence in comparisons of memorization and retrieval from the rest and each are expressed significantly more in the interhemispheric and crosshemispheric pairs of derivations than in the intrahemispheric pairs. Revealed topographic specificity of the dynamics of EEG coherence by changing the states is considered in terms of ideas about cognitive-specific forms of sustained goal-directed mental attention.  相似文献

Topographical EEG maps of human responses to odors   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The physiological response to seven odors (birch tar, galbanum, heliotropine, jasmine, lavender, lemon and peppermint) was assessedby EEG recordings from 19 scalp loci from 16 young adult females.Topographic maps were constructed from the amplitude spectrain four frequency bands: delta (1–4 Hz), theta (4–8Hz), alpha (8–13 Hz) and beta (13–30 Hz). Eightseconds of representative and artifact-free EEG were selectedfor FFT analysis before onset of odor delivery, and at threetimes after stimulus onset. EEG was also quantified at 30 safter stimulus termination. Subjects differed in their subjective responses to the odors, with the most consistently arousing and strong odors being galbanum, lavender, lemon and peppermint. Heliotropine was notably weak. The most pleasant odors were lemon and peppermint, while birchtar, galbanum and lavender were consistently unpleasant. EEGmap changes occurred in one or more frequency bands in eachsubject in response to one or more of the odors. EEG map changessometimes occurred even with weak odors and even when the subjectseemed unaware of the odor's presence. This was most notablewith heliotropine. Across subjects, the most consistent responses to odors werein the theta band. Analysis of variance confirmed that certainodors caused statistically significant theta increases overthe left anterior group of electrodes. Both right hemispheregroups tended to have significant theta increases. The odorsthat caused the greatest increase in theta were birch tar, jasmine, lavender and lemon. On the other hand, during blank controltrials, theta activity diminished. There was also a significantodor by epoch interaction over the right posterior set of electrodes.Several of the odors caused increased theta at one or more epochs.Lemon caused an immediate increase in theta that abated withtime. Birch tar induced a delayed response that persisted afterthe stimulus was turned off. Jasmine and lavender tended toinduce theta sooner than birch tar, but the effect did not outlastthe stimulus. Increased theta was not associated with EEG signsof drowsiness. We conclude that all odors affected the EEG in at least somesubjects, and all subjects responded to at least some odors.Widespread increase in theta occurred in most subjects duringstimulation with such odors as birch tar, jasmine, lavenderand lemon.  相似文献

EEG topography by a microcomputer system (ATAC-3700 Nihon-Kohden) was performed in the rabbit in order to investigate the mechanism of TRH action on the brain wave. Power spectral analysis was carried out using a fast Fourier transform algorithm. The square root of the power spectra was defined as the equivalent potential over each frequency band by Ueno & Matsuoka's method. Potential fields of EEG frequency band were printed out on the topographic maps. The potentials of the electrocortical delta and theta waves were high, while the potentials of the alpha, beta 1 and beta 2 waves were low. Stimulation of the nucleus ventralis anterior (VA) by 3 Hz and 8 Hz resulted in a decrease in these potentials, especially, those of the alpha, beta 1 and beta 2 waves. The potentials of the alpha and fast waves were increased following unilateral destruction of VA. In the rabbit, in which TRH 0.5 mg/kg had been administered beforehand, there was no decrease in the potential of each wave induced by stimulation of VA with frequencies of 3 Hz and 8 Hz. The findings suggest involvement of the diffuse thalamocortical projection system in the activation of EEG by TRH.  相似文献

The work is aimed at the study of neurophysiological mechanisms of examination stress in subjects with different levels of cortical activation. Spectral power and typical cortical connections of EEG rhythms were studied in students under conditions of stress before and immediately after examination as well as during usual academic semester. Students with relatively higher and relatively lower baseline alpha rhythm, i.e., with different levels of cortical activation revealed both similar and different EEG reactions. Before examination, in both groups of subjects the spectral power of EEG activity in the delta and thetal bands increased, and the number of connections in the bands of the alpha and beta 1 rhythms decreased as compared to usual baseline conditions. However, the EEG reactions in the theta 2 band in the two groups were oppositely directed. Significant changes in the beta 2 power were observed only in the group of subjects with higher baseline level of cortical activation.  相似文献

The possibility that power-to-power (theta–beta) frequency coupling increases during development was analyzed. Three minutes of spontaneous EEG in an open eyes condition were recorded in a sample of 160 subjects ranging from 6 to 26 years old. Theta (4–7 Hz) and beta band (15–20 Hz) power was calculated in a trial-by-trial basis. Inter-electrode power correlations (IPC) were computed in each subject as the correlation between the power of two frequency bands recorded in two electrodes. An increase in theta–beta IPC with age was obtained. IPCs were higher when theta was seeded in posterior regions than in anterior or central regions. Moreover, the significant correlations between each individual IPC and age were calculated, making it possible to draw IPC versus age correlation maps in order to capture the IPC development topography. An increase was found in significant correlations in the left hemisphere compared to the right hemisphere. There were no differences in the inter-hemispheric versus intra-hemispheric IPC maturation spatial patterns. An increase in power-to-power–frequency coupling in theta–beta occurs during development, suggesting an increase in functional connectivity with age. Frequency coupling between theta and beta rhythms would be one of the mechanisms facilitating integration of long distance functional networks during development.  相似文献

In relaxed wakefulness, the EEG exhibits robust rhythms in the alpha band (8-13 Hz), which decelerate to theta (approximately 2-7 Hz) frequencies during early sleep. In animal models, these rhythms occur coherently with synchronized activity in the thalamus. However, the mechanisms of this thalamic activity are unknown. Here we show that, in slices of the lateral geniculate nucleus maintained in vitro, activation of the metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR) mGluR1a induces synchronized oscillations at alpha and theta frequencies that share similarities with thalamic alpha and theta rhythms recorded in vivo. These in vitro oscillations are driven by an unusual form of burst firing that is present in a subset of thalamocortical neurons and are synchronized by gap junctions. We propose that mGluR1a-induced oscillations are a potential mechanism whereby the thalamus promotes EEG alpha and theta rhythms in the intact brain.  相似文献
