The relationship between concentrations of chlorophyll a in an open water area and growing areas of the macrophytes Trapa spp. and Nelumbo nucifera was investigated to clarify the role of macrophytes in phytoplankton growth in summer in a eutrophic shallow sand lake, Lake Honsagata, Japan. The chlorophyll a concentrations formed peaks in June 2007 and July 2008 in summer with cyanobacterial blooms composed of mainly Microcystis, Anabaena, Phormidium, and Oscillatoria, which decreased toward August and were maintained at different annual levels. The decline of blooms in August was caused by the rapid growth of macrophytes. The composition of phytoplankton and the level of bloom development in summertime differed characteristically from year to year. Also the total vegetation area of N. nucifera and Trapa spp. showed annually marked changes. A significant negative correlation between the concentrations of chlorophyll a and the growth areas of Trapa spp. in August was detected, indicating that the floating-leaved plants, Trapa spp., produced irregular, clear and turbid water states in this shallow eutrophicated lake. These antagonistic relations are explained based on a likely scenario of allelopathic effects on the development of cyanobacteria by Trapa spp. vegetation and the nutrient absorption competition among them. Our study demonstrated the potential of Trapa spp. to control cyanobacterial blooms producing harmful toxins.  相似文献

Patterns of phytoplankton size spectra variation with gradients of environmental stress have been observed in freshwater, transitional waters and marine ecosystems, driving the development of size spectra based assessment tools. In this study, we have tested on transitional and coastal waters a new Index of Size spectra Sensitivity of Phytoplankton (ISS-Phyto), which integrates simple size spectra metrics, size class sensitivity to anthropogenic disturbance, phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) and taxonomic richness thresholds. ISS-Phyto has been tested both among and within ecosystems along pressure gradients based on expert view assessment; the adequacy of symmetric and both left and right asymmetric models of phytoplankton size class sensitivity have been compared. The results showed that ISS-Phyto consistently discriminated between anthropogenic and natural disturbance conditions. Left asymmetric models of size spectra sensitivity, assuming greater disturbance tolerance with respect to eutrophication and organic enrichment of increasingly large size classes, showed the best fit comparing all ecosystems; in three of the four considered ecosystems (Varna, Helsinki, Mompás-Pasaia), they seemed to discriminate best between different levels of disturbance also within ecosystems. Moreover, they demonstrated significant and inverse patterns of variation along the overall pressure gradient as well as along the inorganic phosphorus (DIP), chlorophyll a and trophic index (TRIX) gradients. Therefore, ISS-Phyto, originally developed for transitional waters, seems to be an adequate assessment tool of ecological status also in coastal marine waters; moreover, it seems adequate to describe within ecosystem disturbance gradients. Hence, ISS-Phyto helps to understand the relationships between anthropogenic impact and ecosystem response from the individual point of view, with reference to the simple parameter of body size.  相似文献

The impact of nutrient enrichment on the phytoplankton community structure, and particularly cyanobacteria, was studied in a 3-week mesocosm experiment conducted in August 2001 in the Archipelago Sea, a part of the northern Baltic Sea. The factorial design experiment included daily additions of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) at two mass ratios, 1N:1P and 7N:1P, respectively, additions of iron (Fe) and a synthetic chelator, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). The floating enclosures (400 l) were sampled for analyses of phytoplankton biomass and community structure, phytoplankton primary production, chlorophyll a, nutrients, and hepatotoxins. Chlorophyll a concentration, phytoplankton biomass and primary production increased most in the 7N:1P treatment. The increase was mainly due to an abundant growth of chlorophytes (Dictyosphaerium subsolitarium, Kirchneriella spp., Monoraphidium contortum, and Oocystis spp.), pennate diatoms (especially Nitzschia spp.), dinophytes and the chroococcalean cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. The nutrient enrichments had no effect on the total biomass of N2-fixing cyanobacteria. Nevertheless, the biomass of Anabaena spp. was highest in the enrichments with a low N/P ratio. Chlorophyll a concentration and total phytoplankton biomass were not affected by Fe or EDTA, but Fe alone had a positive effect on the chlorophyte Kirchneriella sp. The N2-fixing cyanobacteria Aphanizomenon sp. responded positively to Fe alone and to both Fe and EDTA added together. The hepatotoxin concentration increased during the experiment, but no clear responses to nutrient enrichments were found. Our study showed species-specific responses to nutrient enrichments among the N2-fixing cyanobacteria. Although the total phytoplankton production was not Fe-limited; the availability of Fe clearly affected the phytoplankton community structure.  相似文献

Lake Poyang, a Yangtze-connected lake that is the largest freshwater lake in China, was studied in summer from 2009 to 2012. The primary objective was to investigate the spatial variability of chlorophyll a (chl a) on a whole-lake scale and to identify the key factors affecting phytoplankton growth. Stepwise multiple linear regression and Spearman’s rank correlation analyses showed that the shade index is the major factor determining the spatial distribution of chl a; nutrients don’t explain much variation in chl a, except in the east. The relationships between shade index and chl a varied regionally. Chl a varied inversely with the variation of the shade index, especially in the north and south, reflecting light limitation. However, the correlation was positive in the east due to high chl a concentration negatively affecting light availability, which was promoted by sufficient nutrients. In the center, no factor was found to have an obvious effect on phytoplankton growth, most likely because of human activities and high heterogeneity. These new data on the spatial variability of chl a and its relationship with light availability in Lake Poyang will be crucial to understand chl a regulation and contribute to the knowledge regarding phytoplankton in the Yangtze Basin.  相似文献

The technique of artificial enrichment of seawater has been employed in an attempt to define nutrients critically limiting the growth of phytoplankton in Marsaxlokk Bay, Malta. While both nitrates and phosphates are scarce, phosphate is the primary factor limiting phytoplankton growth. There appear to be no seasonal changes in the respective roles of phosphates and nitrates as factors limiting primary productivity. The higher incubating temperatures of theJune cultures resulted both in a quicker attainment of the peak values of chlorophyll a and in a higher peak concentration of this pigment as compared with the November and February experiments. There appeared to be no major changes in the relative composition of the phytoplankton populations in all enrichment experiments. Diatoms, mainly Skeletonema costatum and Chaetoceros spp., dominated all culture vessels. These results are discussed in the light of the values obtained for the ratio of pigment absorption at 430 nm to that at 665 nm.  相似文献

We examine the large-scale distribution patterns of the nano- and microphytoplankton collected from 145 oceanic stations, at 3 m depth, the 20% light level and the depth of the subsurface chlorophyll maximum, during the Malaspina-2010 Expedition (December 2010-July 2011), which covered 15 biogeographical provinces across the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans, between 35°N and 40°S. In general, the water column was stratified, the surface layers were nutrient-poor and the nano- and microplankton (hereafter phytoplankton, for simplicity, although it included also heterotrophic protists) community was dominated by dinoflagellates, other flagellates and coccolithophores, while the contribution of diatoms was only important in zones with shallow nutriclines such as the equatorial upwelling regions. We applied a principal component analysis to the correlation matrix among the abundances (after logarithmic transform) of the 76 most frequent taxa to synthesize the information contained in the phytoplankton data set. The main trends of variability identified consisted of: 1) A contrast between the community composition of the upper and the lower parts of the euphotic zone, expressed respectively by positive or negative scores of the first principal component, which was positively correlated with taxa such as the dinoflagellates Oxytoxum minutum and Scrippsiella spp., and the coccolithophores Discosphaera tubifera and Syracosphaera pulchra (HOL and HET), and negatively correlated with taxa like Ophiaster hydroideus (coccolithophore) and several diatoms, 2) a general abundance gradient between phytoplankton-rich regions with high abundances of dinoflagellate, coccolithophore and ciliate taxa, and phytoplankton-poor regions (second principal component), 3) differences in dominant phytoplankton and ciliate taxa among the Atlantic, the Indian and the Pacific oceans (third principal component) and 4) the occurrence of a diatom-dominated assemblage (the fourth principal component assemblage), including several pennate taxa, Planktoniella sol, Hemiaulus hauckii and Pseudo-nitzschia spp., in the divergence regions. Our findings indicate that consistent assemblages of co-occurring phytoplankton taxa can be identified and that their distribution is best explained by a combination in different degrees of both environmental and historical influences.  相似文献

The distribution of several surface properties, both physical and chemical, of three Scottish sea lochs were studied during the spring phytoplankton bloom.Concentrations of nitrate, phosphate, and silicate have been determined and related to fluctuations in the freshwater input and uptake by the phytoplankton population. The ratios nitrate: phosphate and silicate: phosphate (on atom bases) in Loch Creran and Loch Linnhe were similar, but there were certain marked differences from those in Loch Etive.Nitrate, rather than phosphate, was a critical factor in the productivity of Loch Creran and Loch Linnhe. In Loch Etive the limitation of these nutrients was directly affected by the amount of fresh-water entering into the Loch.Patchiness of chlorophyll a and phaeopigments in Loch Creran and Loch Etive reflected those factors (e.g., freshwater/sea-water inflow, turbulence produced by the loch topography etc.) which affect the surface circulation in the two lochs. The delay in the development of the phytoplankton bloom in Loch Linnhe may be attributed to a poor stability of the surface layers due to low run-off.  相似文献

Estuaries are under intense pressure, because of urban developments and water abstraction. Water column characteristics of the Nahoon Estuary were examined in 2014–2015 to identify factors that influenced phytoplankton dynamics. The estuary was found to be saline (~33) and remained well-oxygenated (~6 mg l?1) throughout the current study. During this period, freshwater inflow into the estuary was minimal and chlorophyll a biomass was low (3.6 ± 0.3 µg l?1). Nutrient concentration at Nahoon Estuary showed a linear relationship with salinity, indicative of a conservative behaviour. Phytoplankton dynamics were altered by fluctuations in nutrient levels, not necessarily in response to freshwater inflow. The impact of Nahoon Dam and destructive land-use alongside the Nahoon River decreases freshwater inflow and increases nutrient loading into the estuary. In terms of nutrient loading, the current study showed the importance of microalgae as indicators of the nutrient status of an estuary. The presence of cyanobacteria and high phytoplankton biomass in the upper reaches of the estuary confirms the input of excessive nutrients. The results of the current study clearly show that better management of both the Nahoon River and its catchment is vital to ensure the health of the system.  相似文献

Pigment-based chemotaxonomy and CHEMTAX software have proven to be a valuable phytoplankton monitoring tool in marine environments, but are yet underdeveloped to determine algal assemblages in freshwater ecosystems. The main objectives of this study were (1) to compare the results of direct microscopy and CHEMTAX in describing phytoplankton community composition dynamics in a large, shallow and eutrophic lake; (2) to analyze the efficiency of the pigment-based method to detect changes in phytoplankton seasonal dynamics and during rapid bloom periods; (3) to assess the suitability of specific marker pigments and available marker pigment:chlorophyll a ratios to follow seasonal changes in eutrophic freshwater environment. A 5-year (2009-2013) parallel phytoplankton assessment by direct microscopy and by CHEMTAX was conducted using published marker pigment:chlorophyll a ratios. Despite displaying some differences from microscopy results, the pigment-based method successfully described the overall pattern of phytoplankton community dynamics during seasonal cycle in a eutrophic lake. Good agreement between the methods was achieved for most phytoplankton groups - cyanobacteria, chlorophytes, diatoms and cryptophytes. The agreement was poor in case of chrysophytes and dinoflagellates. Our study shows clearly that published marker pigment:chlorophyll a ratios can be used to describe algal class abundances, but they need to be calibrated for specific freshwater environment. Broader use of this method would enable to expand monitoring networks and increase measurement frequencies of freshwater ecosystems to meet the goals of the Water Framework Directive.  相似文献

The potential interactions between the bloom-forming dinoflagellates and other phytoplankton during the algal bloom cycle are interesting, while the causes for the phytoplankton community changes were not fully understood. We hypothesized that phytoplankton community structure and photosynthetic activities of total phytoplankton have their special characteristics in different phases of the algal blooms. To test this hypothesis, a survey covering the process of a Prorocentrum donghaiense bloom in coastal waters between Dongtou and Nanji Islands was carried out from 9 to 20 May 2016, and the changes in the phytoplankton community and photosynthetic activities of total phytoplankton were determined. Surface seawater was sampled for microscopic analysis of phytoplankton composition and pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) chlorophyll fluorescence analysis of photosynthetic activities of the total phytoplankton species. A total of 25, 31, and 19 phytoplankton species were identified in its growth (9–12 May), maintenance (13–18 May) and dissipation phases (19–20 May), respectively. Diatoms were dominant in terms of species number while dinoflagellates were predominant at cell abundance. Dinoflagellates were the major dominant species during three phases of the bloom based on the dominance (Y) value, whereas the dominant species extended to dinoflagellates and diatoms including P. donghaiense, Coscinodiscus argus, Gonyaulax spinifera, Cyclotella sp. and Scrippsiella trochoidea in the dissipation phase. In the maintenance phase, the average cell abundances of the total phytoplankton and P. donghaiense were consistent with the chlorophyll a (Chla) concentration in the seawater; for the diversity indices of total phytoplankton species, Simpson index (C) was the highest while Shannon index (H′) and Pielou evenness index (J′) were the lowest. Furthermore, photosynthetic activities of the total phytoplankton species represented by the effective quantum yield (Fq'/Fm') and the maximum relative electron transport rate (rETRmax) in the maintenance phase were higher than those in the growth and dissipation phases. The results indicated that the characteristics of phytoplankton community structure and photosynthetic activities could be regarded as criteria in predicting the phases of algal blooms.  相似文献

We studied the effects of future climate change scenarios on plankton communities of a Norwegian fjord using a mesocosm approach. After the spring bloom, natural plankton were enclosed and treated in duplicates with inorganic nutrients elevated to pre-bloom conditions (N, P, Si; eutrophication), lowering of 0.4 pH units (acidification), and rising 3°C temperature (warming). All nutrient-amended treatments resulted in phytoplankton blooms dominated by chain-forming diatoms, and reached 13–16 μg chlorophyll (chl) a l−1. In the control mesocosms, chl a remained below 1 μg l−1. Acidification and warming had contrasting effects on the phenology and bloom-dynamics of autotrophic and heterotrophic microplankton. Bacillariophyceae, prymnesiophyceae, cryptophyta, and Protoperidinium spp. peaked earlier at higher temperature and lower pH. Chlorophyta showed lower peak abundances with acidification, but higher peak abundances with increased temperature. The peak magnitude of autotrophic dinophyceae and ciliates was, on the other hand, lowered with combined warming and acidification. Over time, the plankton communities shifted from autotrophic phytoplankton blooms to a more heterotrophic system in all mesocosms, especially in the control unaltered mesocosms. The development of mass balance and proportion of heterotrophic/autotrophic biomass predict a shift towards a more autotrophic community and less-efficient food web transfer when temperature, nutrients and acidification are combined in a future climate-change scenario. We suggest that this result may be related to a lower food quality for microzooplankton under acidification and warming scenarios and to an increase of catabolic processes compared to anabolic ones at higher temperatures.  相似文献

A study was done of the relationship between hydrographic variables and the composition, abundance, community structure and biomass spectrums of coastal phytoplankton at scales greater than 100 km on the Yucatan Peninsula (SE Gulf of Mexico). This was done during the season of greatest environmental instability in the region, the northwind season (late fall to winter). Samples were collected at stations in the west (Campeche), north (Yucatan), and east (Quintana Roo) zones of the Peninsula. Measurements were taken of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, dissolved inorganic nutrients (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and phosphate) and chlorophyll a, and samples were taken for phytoplankton analysis. The hydrographic results showed the Campeche zone as having the lowest salinity (<35 psu) values, as well as the highest inorganic nutrient and chlorophyll a values, all of which are related to continental water contributions. The Yucatan zone had the lowest temperatures and the lowest inorganic nutrient values, indicating influence from the Yucatan Current and the Gulf of Mexico. A total of 159 phytoplankton species were identified, dominated by diatoms (>80%) and dinoflagellates. Phytoplankton exhibited greater concentration, richness, equitability and diversity in Campeche, while the lowest community structure values were had in the Quintana Roo zone. The ordination analysis demonstrated that the dominant genera were the diatoms Chaetoceros, Pseudonitzschia and Thalassionema. The biomass spectrums exhibited the lowest slope in environments of higher heterogeneity, with Campeche being the most disturbed and heterogeneous zone and Quintana Roo that with the least heterogeneity.  相似文献

1. Pigment analysis by high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) combined with data analysis using the CHEMTAX program has proven to be a fast and precise method for determining the abundance of phytoplankton groups in marine environments. To determine whether CHEMTAX is applicable also to freshwater phytoplankton, 20 different species of freshwater algae were cultured and their pigment/chlorophyll a (Chl a) ratios determined for exponential growth at three different light intensities and for stationary growth at one light intensity. 2. The different treatments had a relatively insignificant impact on the absolute values of the diagnostic pigment/Chl a ratios, with the exception of cyanobacteria and cryptophytes for which the zeaxanthin/Chl a and alloxanthin/Chl a ratios varied considerably. 3. The pigment ratios were tested on samples collected in six different eutrophic Danish lakes during two summer periods using the CHEMTAX program to calculate the biomass of the phytoplankton groups as Chl a. The CHEMTAX‐derived seasonal changes in Chl a biomass corresponded well with the volume of the microscopically determined phytoplankton groups. More phytoplankton groups were detected by the pigment method than by the microscopic method. 4. Applying the pigment ratios developed in this study, the pigment method can be used to determine the abundance of the individual phytoplankton groups, which are useful as biological water quality indicators when determining the ecological status of freshwater lakes.  相似文献

Investigations on phytoplankton communities in a nearshore region off the Cape Peninsula revealed three types of upwelled water. During active upwelling temperatures were < 10 °C and concentrations of inorganic nutrients were high (Type 1). Maturing upwelled water was characterized by temperatures > 10°C and nitrate concentrations varying between 2 and 15 μg-at. NO3-N · 1?1 (Type 2), while aged upwelled water (Type 3) contained low concentrations of nitrate (<2 μg-at. NO3-N · 1?1) at temperatures > 10°C. During the summer of 1978–1979 diatoms dominated the communities from October to January but microflagellates were dominant in February and March. In both types of community, low concentrations of ATP, chlorophyll a, protein and carbohydrate were measured in Type 1 water with protein/carbohydrate ratios being > 1. In Type 2 water concentrations of chlorophyll a, ATP and protein were high and the protein/carbohydrate ratio was > 1. Concentrations of chlorophyll a and ATP remained high in Type 3 water but the protein/carbohydrate ratio decreased to < 1 due to an increase in the concentration of acid-soluble glucan. It was concluded that the communities were in an active phase of growth in Type 1 and Type 2 water when adequate nutrients were available, but were in a slow-growing phase in Type 3 water when nitrate concentrations were low. Correlation coefficients, simple linear regressions and stepwise multiple regressions between biochemical and environmental variables confirmed that nitrate was the nutrient most closely related to the biochemical composition of phytoplankton. Using linear regression equations of biochemical variables on glucan it was estimated that chlorophyll a existed in a ratio of ≈ 1: 1 between living phytoplankton and bacteria/detritus, while the percentage of ATP was high in the phytoplankton component of Type 1 water but low in that of Type 2 water. The percentage of protein in detritus was greater than in living phytoplankton, and the carbohydrate content of living phytoplankton increased as the upwelled water matured from Type 1 and Type 2 to Type 3.  相似文献

Nutrient limitation and algal blooms in urbanizing tidal creeks   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Tidal creeks are commonly found in low energy systems on the East and Gulf Coasts of the United States, and are often subject to intense watershed human development. Many of these creeks are receiving urban and suburban runoff containing nutrients, among other pollutants. During the period 1993-2001, we studied three tidal creeks located in southeastern North Carolina, a rapidly urbanizing area. All three creeks received anthropogenic nutrient loading. Oligohaline to mesohaline stations in upper tidal creek regions had much higher nutrient (especially nitrate-N) concentrations than lower creek areas, and hosted spring and summer phytoplankton blooms that at times exceeded 200 μg chlorophyll a l−1. Phytoplankton biomass during winter was low at all stations in all three creeks. Spring and summer nutrient addition bioassay experiments were conducted to characterize the nutrients limiting phytoplankton growth. Water from high salinity stations in all three creeks always showed significant positive responses to nitrate-N inputs, even at concentrations as low as 50 μg N l−1. Low salinity stations in upper creek areas often showed significant responses to nitrate-N inputs, but on occasion showed sensitivity to phosphorus inputs as well, indicating the influence of anthropogenic nitrate loading. During several experiments, one of the upper stations showed no positive response to nutrient inputs, indicating that these stretches were nutrient replete, and further phytoplankton growth appeared to be light-limited either by phytoplankton self-shading or turbidity. Water from upper creek areas yielded much higher chlorophyll a concentrations in bioassay experiments than did lower creek water. In general, these urbanizing tidal creeks were shown to be very sensitive to nitrogen loading, and provide a physical environment conducive to phytoplankton bloom formation in nutrient-enriched areas. Tidal creeks are important ecological resources in that they are considered to be nursery areas for many species of fish and shellfish. To protect the ecological function of these small, but very abundant estuarine systems, management efforts should recognize their susceptibility to algal blooms and focus on control of nonpoint source nutrient inputs, especially nitrogen.  相似文献

The red fluorescence of filtered sea water has been measured on 216 samples in the 0–150 m layer of the equatorial Atlantic Ocean.Soluble fluorescence is maximum where chlorophyll a and in vivo fluorescence are maximum, but the percentage of soluble fluorescence, (soluble fluorescence/in vivo fluorescence) × 100, is minimum at these levels; in recently upwelled waters of the equatorial divergence, the percentage of soluble fluorescence is equal to 10 in the 0–20 m layer and regularly increases to 60 or more at 100–150 m; in the nitrate depleted mixed layer of a convergence it averages 30, decreases to 15 in the thermocline maximum of chlorophyll a, and again reaches 60 in deep waters.A significant positive correlation has been found between the percentage of soluble fluorescence and the amount of phaeophytin, and soluble fluorescence in the open sea is thought to be the result of the degradation and release of chloroplastic products by aged or grazed phytoplankton populations. Low values (< 20) of the percentage soluble fluorescence indicate the presence of healthy phytoplankton cells, whereas high values (> 30) are evidence of unfavourable growth conditions (e.g., limiting nutrients or darkness) or high grazing pressure. The simultaneous measurement of in vivo fluorescence and soluble fluorescence is a method of obtaining valuable information rapidly on the physiological state of the phytoplankton population in the water column.  相似文献

Despite the increasing knowledge of Synechococcus spp. and their co-occurring cyanophages in oceanic and coastal water, little is known about their abundance, distribution, and interactions in the Chesapeake Bay estuarine ecosystem. A 5-year interannual survey shows that Synechococcus spp. and their phages are persistent and abundant members of Chesapeake Bay microbial communities. Synechococcus blooms (106 cells ml−1) were often observed in summer throughout the Bay, contributing 20 to 40% of total phytoplankton chlorophyll a. The distribution of phycoerythrin-containing (PE-rich) Synechococcus cells appeared to mostly correlate with the salinity gradient, with higher abundances at higher salinities. Cyanophages infectious to Synechococcus were also abundant (up to 6 × 105 viruses ml−1 by the most probable number assay) during summer months in the Bay. The covariation in abundance of Synechococcus spp. and cyanophages was evident, although the latitude of observed positive correlation varied in different years, mirroring the changing environmental conditions and therefore the host-virus interactions. The impacts of cyanophages on host Synechococcus populations also varied spatially and temporally. Higher phage-related Synechococcus mortality was observed in drought years. Virus-mediated host mortality and subsequent liberation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) may substantially influence oceanic biogeochemical processing through the microbial loop as well as the microbial carbon pump. These observations emphasize the influence of environmental gradients on natural Synechococcus spp. and their phage population dynamics in the estuarine ecosystem.  相似文献

Global warming may intensify eutrophication of shallow lakes by affecting nutrient loading, evaporation rates, and water level and thus produce major changes in food webs. We investigated to what degree food webs in tropical humid lakes differed from those in more eutrophic semi-arid lakes of the same latitude. Our results indicate that the catchment area-to-lake area ratio, nutrients, chlorophyll a, suspended solids, abundances of phytoplankton, zooplankton, and omnivorous fish as well as total fish catch per unit effort were all higher in the semi-arid lakes, whereas inlet water-to-evaporation ratio (proxy for water balance), water transparency, percentage macrophytes cover, and the piscivores:omnivores ratio were higher in the humid lakes. Our results suggest that reduced inlet water-to-evaporation ratio will increase lake eutrophication, which, in turn, as in temperate regions, will alter trophic structure of the freshwater community.

Bioassessment of running waters should ideally be optimized to include sampling of the biota when and where they are most sensitive to anthropogenic disturbances, but direct comparisons of the responses of biota across habitats and seasons are lacking. We sampled benthic macroinvertebrates from nine boreal streams situated along an agricultural land use gradient in two seasons (spring and autumn) and two habitats (pools and riffles). Univariate (e.g., diversity) and multivariate (ordination scores) metrics, as well as biological traits, were used to assess changes in assemblage composition associated with agricultural land use. Abundances were generally higher in agricultural compared to forested streams, and in riffles compared to pools. Spring samples had lower mean abundances of several insect taxa (e.g., chironomid midges) compared to autumn samples, while abundances of non-insects (e.g., oligochaetes and Pisidium spp.) remained unchanged. Community turnover (correspondence analysis) had higher precision and sensitivity compared to diversity metrics, and samples from the spring and from riffles responded more to the land use gradient than those from autumn and pool habitats, respectively. The finding that catchment land use resulted in macrohabitat differences and, ultimately, differences in taxonomic composition between agricultural and forested streams and between pool and riffle habitats can be used to optimize future bioassessment based on macroinvertebrates.  相似文献
