The horizontal and vertical distribution and the abundance of ostracods, hyperiids (amphipods) and euphausiids in the Greenland Sea along a transect parallel 74°45′N (from 15°45′E to 08°30′W) are described. The samples were taken by RV “Meteor” in late autumn of 1988. 8 species of the above named groups have been recorded in two different water masses which were touched by the transect. 5 stations were situated in the realm of the Atlantic waters of the Spitsbergen Current. HereDiscoconchoecia elegans, Meganyctiphanes norvegica, andThemisto compressa are indicators for the southern Atlantic water. 6 stations belong to the Arctic area dominated by Arctic Surface Water, whereBoroecia borealis, Themisto abyssorum, Thysanoessa longicaudata, andThysanoessa inermis are quite abundant as borealsubarctic species, whereasThemisto libellula is a true species of pure Arctic water.

The distribution and species diversity of plant communities along a 600 km transect through the northeastern Tibetan Plateau (32°42′–35°07′ N, 101°02′–97°38′ E) with altitudes from 3255 to 4460 m are described. The transect started from the Youyi Bridge of Banma through Dari, Maqin and Maduo to Zaling Lake. The data from 47 plots along the transect are summarized and analyzed. The mean annual temperature, the mean annual rainfall and the length of growing season decreases from 2.6 to −4.5 °C, from 767.2 to 240.1 mm, from 210 to 140 days, respectively, along the transect from the southeastern Banma to northwestern Zaling Lake. The number of vascular plant species recorded in 47 plots is 242 including 2 tree, 34 shrub, 206 herb species. Main vegetation types on the transect from southeast to northwest are: Sabina convallium forest, Picea likiangensis forest, Pyracantha fortuneana + Spiraea alpina shrub, Hippophae neurocarpu shrub, Sibiraea angustata + Polygonum viviparum shrub, Stellera chamaejasme herb meadow, Potentilla fruticosa + Salix obscura + Carex sp. Shrub, Kobresia capillifolia meadow, P. froticosa + Kobresia humilis shrub, Caragana jubata + S. obscura shrub, Kobresia tibetica meadow, Kobresia pygmaea meadow, K. pygmaea + Stipa purpurea steppe meadow, Stipa purpurea steppe. Plant richness and diversity index all showed a decreasing trend with increasing of elevation along transect from southeast to northwest. Detailed information on altitudinal ranges and distribution of the alpine vegetation, vascular flora and environments over the alpine zone at northeastern Tibetan Plateau provides baseline records relevant to future assessment of probable effects of global climate changes.  相似文献

Benthic macroinfaunal assemblages associated with Amazonian saltmarshes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The composition and abundance of the poorly known benthic macroinfauna associated with northern Brazilian saltmarshes, were described from eight sites (between 0°42′2.5″S, 47°52′44.1″W and 0°50′17.3″S, 46°36′13.3″W) along the Pará coast, Brazil. Sampling was carried out in November of 2007. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to test for differences in sediment, vegetation and macroinfaunal variables among sites. No vertical zonation of the macroinfauna was detected. Macroinfaunal structure differed greatly among sites with different sediment and vegetation characteristics. Number of individuals and taxa were low in sites with sandy sediments and short, sparse vegetation and high in those with silty sediments with high organic matter and water contents, and tall, dense vegetation. Increasing number of individuals and taxa were associated with a geographical gradient in pore water salinity, which increases from west to east, coinciding with patterns of rainfall described for the Pará coast.  相似文献

A Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, and red-pigmented bacterial strain, HMC5104T, was isolated from a solar saltern, found in Jeungdo, Republic of Korea (34°59′47″N 126°10′02″E). The major fatty acids were summed feature 4 (comprising iso-C17:1 I and/or anteiso-C17:1 B; 37.2%), iso-C15:0 (20.4%), and iso-C17.0 30H (15.3%). The DNA G+C content was 46.0 mol%. The major isoprenoid quinone was menaquinone-7 (MK-7). A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain HMC5104T formed a lineage within the genus Pontibacter, and was closely related to Pontibacter korlensis (95.9%), P. roseus (94.9%), and P. actiniarum (94.3%). Similarities to all other Pontibacter species were between 95.9–93.9%. On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain HMC5104T represents a novel species of the genus Pontibacter, for which the name Pontibacter salisaro sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HMC5104T (=KCTC 22712T = NBRC 105731T).  相似文献

Much of the primary vegetation at low altitudes has been greatly altered or destroyed by a long history of human activities. This is particularly true in eastern China, where low-altitude areas are now dominated by secondary forests or plantations. Altitudinal vegetation zonation of this region is often based on these secondary forests, resulting in seral vegetation with an obscure zonal sequence. Here, we deduced the potential climax vegetation according to the regeneration patterns of the dominant species of the secondary forests at low altitudes (below 1,000 m a.s.l.) on Mt. Tianmu (1,506 m a.s.l., 30°18′30″–30°21′37″N, 119°24′11″–119°27′11″E). Based on the potential climax vegetation combined with the floristic composition and community structure, three vegetation zones were identified, viz: (1) evergreen broad-leaved forest zone (400–950 m a.s.l.); (2) evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved mixed forest zone (950–1,100 m a.s.l.); (3) deciduous broad-leaved forest zone (1,100–1,506 m a.s.l.). The altitudinal vegetation zones identified in this study correspond with the thermal conditions on Mt. Tianmu. The distribution of vegetation on Mt. Tianmu was limited by lower temperatures in winter, and the altitudinal thermal vegetation zones on this mountain were more similar to the thermal vegetation of Japan than to that of China. The vertical distributions and roles of conifers were different between the eastern and the western regions along 30°N latitude in humid East Asia. Cryptomeria fortunei formed the emergent layer, towering above the broad-leaved canopy at middle altitudes as C. japonica on Yakushima, but disappeared at high altitudes with hydrothermal limitation on Mt. Tianmu.  相似文献

Two samples of snow petrel Pagodroma nivea mumiyo (solidified stomach oil) from Heimefrontfjella (74°34′36″S, 11°13′24″W) in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, were radiocarbon dated at 37,400 ± 1,500 and 3,120 ± 70 years old (dates are corrected for the ‘reservoir effect’). The age of the older sample provides further evidence that snow petrel colonies have existed in the mountain peaks of Dronning Maud Land since before the last glacial maximum (approx. 20,000–16,000 years ago). This finding also pushes back the estimated timing of establishment of snow petrel breeding colonies in this part of the continent by several thousand years. The variation in the accumulation rates of these two samples (1.6 and 35.2 mm per millennium, respectively) supports previous observations that mumiyo accumulation rates are highly variable and probably relate to site-specific factors affecting accumulation and degradation of the oil. Studies that help us understand historical bird population distributions in continental Antarctica can significantly aid the development and refinement of models that explain glacial advancement and retreat, the relationship between sea ice and population viability and, perhaps, predict species responses to future climate shifts.  相似文献

From 18 soil samples taken in the vicinity of the permanent Bulgarian Antarctic base “St. Kliment Ohridski” (62°38′29″S, 60°21′53″W) on Livingston Island, 109 filamentous fungi were isolated on selective media. The most widespread fungal species were members of the genera Cladosporium, Geomyces, Penicillium and Aspergillus. Other species, already recorded in Antarctic environment, were also isolated: Lecanicillium muscarium, Epicoccum nigrum and Alternaria alternata. Thirty strains demonstrating good growth were screened for antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) that play an important role in the defense of aerobic organisms against oxidative stress, by converting reactive oxygen species into nontoxic molecules. Six of them showed high enzyme activity. The tested strains produced SOD with statistically significant higher activity at 15°C than at 30°C suggesting that this enzyme is cold-active. Such SOD could be useful in medicine and cosmetics. The best producer of cold-active SOD, Aspergillus glaucus 363, cultivated in bioreactors, demonstrated optimal growth temperature at 25°C and maximum enzyme activities at 25 and 30°C for SOD and CAT, respectively. The electrophoretical analysis showed that the fungus possesses Cu/Zn-SOD.  相似文献

We report the migration of Manayunkia speciosa from its distribution in North America into the Neotropical Region (Argentina). We collected specimens from November 2007 to March 2009 in the lower Uruguay River-at 33° 5.01′S 58° 12′W, 33° 5.9′S 58°25.2′W from sediments reaching densities of 2,890 ind. m−2, at a mean abundance of 350 ind. m−2. Introductions of nonindigenous species, resulting intentionally or accidentally from anthropic activities, cause significant changes in ecosystems. In aquatic environments, polychaetes are a key invasive group that increases the geographical range of several species through human activities. M. speciosa may have reached the Río de la Plata Basin through a shipping vector and thereafter the Uruguay River by self-navigation.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of the richness, abundance, and composition of epiphytic bryophytes was studied in a matrix of fragmented habitats in the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest of the Murici Ecological Station (9°11′05″–9°16′48″ S, 35°45′20″–35°55′12″ W), northeastern Brazil. The aim was to compare the horizontal (between sites) and vertical (between phorophyte heights) turnover to test a hypothesis based on niche width vulnerability. There was a highly significant decreasing of richness accompanying the loss of habitat, and the most conserved fragment housed a total richness more than 10 times higher than the less conserved fragment. Epiphytes failed to colonize lower trunks (2.1–10 m) and higher zones in most of the non-conserved fragments; they were restricted to the base (0–2 m) and displayed a clear altered floristic composition. The species with restricted ecological amplitudes such as sun and shade tolerant taxa were more negatively affected by habitat loss than generalists. Although the mean richness of generalists decreased in non conserved fragments, the proportional contribution of this guild increased, proving that these taxa are the ones which persist in disturbed sites. The forest fragments capable of harboring rich epiphyte flora in the area studied are over 300 ha in size, which is far from being a common size among Brazilian Atlantic rainforest fragments. Hence, our results highlight the need of conserving the few large remnants in this ecosystem.  相似文献

Two yeast morphotypes, BET 4T and BET 7, were isolated from the gut of click beetle Melanotus villosus. Click beetles were collected from the decaying timber within the woodlands of North Wyke Research, South West England, UK (latitude, 50°46′29″N; longitude, 3°55′23″W). Morphotype BET 7 was identified as Debaryomyces hansenii, and the other morphotype, BET 4T, was found to differs from Priceomyces castillae and Priceomyces haplophilus, its closest phylogenetic neighbours, by 5.0% with respect to the nucleotide sequence of the D1/D2 domain of the large-subunit (LSU) rRNA gene, and by 8.0% with respect to the ribosomal internal-transcribed spacer (ITS) region. BET 4T also differ from P. castillae and P. haplophilus in a number of different phenotypic characteristics. Thus, based on the unique nucleotide sequences of its D1/D2 domain and ITS region, its physiological characteristics and an inability to sporulate, strain BET 4T is assigned the status of a new species of Candida, for which the name Candida northwykensis sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is BET 4T (NCYC 3525T = CBS 11370T).  相似文献

The present paper describes latitudinal and vertical changes in the composition, abundance and diversity of copepods in the Indian sector of the Antarctic Ocean, during the end of austral summer along a transect on 66°30′E between 43 and 62°S, within three layers (600–0, 200–0, 100–0 m). Highest copepod densities were noted in the central part of the transect, between the Antarctic Divergence and the Antarctic Convergence, with a maximum in the Antarctic Divergence zone, particularly in the upper levels of the water column. A total number of 80 copepod species were identified over the entire survey area. The south end and the central part of the transect comprised a small number of species. North of the Antarctic Convergence, this number increased markedly with the progressive disappearence of those species characteristic of Antarctic waters and their replacement by temperate and subtropical species. Generally, small copepods, particularly Oithona similis, Oithona frigida and Ctenocalanus citer, dominated in numbers in both Antarctic and sub-Antarctic areas. The contribution of large species to total copepod numbers was much lower, with Calanus simillimus in the central part of the transect, Pleuromamma borealis in the subtropical zone and Calanus propinquus in the southern part. Correspondence analysis showed a marked latitudinal gradient in population structure with four groups of samples and species corresponding to four latitudinal zones. Community structure (species richness, relative dominance index, evenness, Shannon species diversity index) and species abundance patterns (as rank-frequency diagrams) suggested that the maturity and species richness increased gradually from south to north. A low diversity index and evenness were observed in the area of the Antarctic Divergence, whereas the convergence zone showed high diversity and evenness. Conversely, the frontal zone showed high diversity and evenness. Distribution appeared unrelated to chlorophyll concentrations and on the large scale was related to the hydrologic characteristics. The composition of the early stages of intertidal and subtidal fouling assemblages in Comodoro Rivadavia harbour (Argentina, 45°52′ S, 67°28′ W) and the influence of shore level and season on their structure were analysed. At the beginning of each season, stones were glued to the substratum with epoxy putty and distributed along 4 vertical transects at intervals of 20 m, at 3 levels: upper intertidal, middle intertidal, and subtidal. Substrata remained in the field for 84–100 days. A total of 48 samples (4 seasons × 3 levels × 4 replicates) were analysed. Species richness increased with depth, with 6 taxa in the upper intertidal, 23 in the middle intertidal and 31 in the subtidal. Seasonal differences in richness were less distinct. Green, red and brown algae were the dominant groups. Invertebrates were mainly represented by filter-feeding, sessile organisms, such as cheilostome bryozoans, spirorbid polychaetes and acorn barnacles. The barnacle Balanus glandula and the bryozoan Cryptosula pallasiana were the only non-indigenous species found in this study. Highly significant differences in structure among shore levels and seasons were evidenced by a two-way ANOSIM test. The upper intertidal is characterized by the filamentous green algae Urospora penicilliformis and Ulothrix flacca. The barnacle Balanus glandula is the most abundant species in the middle intertidal. The subtidal is defined mainly by the presence of the spirorbid polychaetes Paralaeospira levinseni and Romanchella perrieri, and the keyhole limpet Fissurella radiosa. Ordination of samples by season was less clear than by shore level.  相似文献

Based on the maritime data collected from 23°30′–33°00′ N and 118°30′–128°00′ E of the East China Sea (ECS) in four seasons during 1997–2000, the dynamics of medusae diversity and their causes were analyzed. A total of 103 medusae species were identified, and these species mainly distributed in the southern and northern offshore areas of the ECS. Species diversity index (H′) of medusae was higher in the south than those in the north, higher in summer and winter than in spring and autumn, and higher in offshore than in the nearshore areas. The species number was closely correlated with H′ value, whereas the abundance of species had no significant relationship with the diversity index. The lower H′ value of the nearshore in spring and autumn resulted from the aggregation of Muggiaea atlantica in the south nearshore and Diphyes chamissonis in the north nearshore. In addition, water temperature, followed by salinity, is the main environmental factor influencing the distribution of species diversity. The H′ value was related to the water temperature at the 10 m layer in winter and spring, and it was associated with the surface water temperature in summer and with the 10 m-salinity-layer in autumn. In spring and summer, the isoline distribution of H′ value reflected the direction of the Taiwan Warm Current and the variation of the water masses in the ECS. In winter, the isoline of the H′ value indicated the incursion of Kuroshio current. In conclusion, the H′ isoline is an good indicator for water masses in ECS. __________ Translated from Biodiversity Science, 2006, 14(6): 508–516 [译自:生物多样性]  相似文献

The present work was undertaken in the Cachoeira do Retiro “Quilombola” community, located in the municipality of Santa Leopoldina (20°06′04″S × 40°31′47″W), in Espírito Santo State, Brazil. We expected to encounter high levels of ethnobotanical knowledge in the community due to its distance from the principal local urban center and its localization in a region of high biodiversity. Field work was undertaken between August 2005 and August 2006, employing semi-structured interviews, participant observation, artifact-interviews, as well as the “walk-in-the-forest” technique in the company of a local specialist. Ten additional informants participated in the research (seven women and three men with ages between 42 and 84) who were identified using the “snow-ball” method. A total of 192 ethnospecies belonging to 188 distinct plant taxa were cited (with 59% being native to the Atlantic Forest biome) and were classified into the following use-categories: medicinal (52%), food (34%), construction (18%), technology (10%), ritualistic (5%), ornamental (5%), and fuelwoods (2%). The plants with the greatest Use-Values were Attalea humilis (1.3) and Polyandrococos caudescens (1.1). The Diversity Index of the community’s ethnobotanical knowledge (5.12 nats) was found to be higher than seen in other ethnobotanical studies undertaken in the Atlantic Forest. Using a methodology for determining conservation priorities it was found that 17 of the 49 species analyzed should be examined more closely in studies that could help guarantee the continuity of their populations in the local forest fragment in light of their low density and intense utilization by the Retiro Quilombola community.  相似文献

The interaction of two water soluble phthalocyanines, cobalt(II) 4,4′,4″,4‴-tetrasulfo-phthalocyanine (CoTsPc) and iron(II) 4,4′,4″,4‴-tetrasulfo-phthalocyanine (FeTsPc), and one water soluble porphyrin, tetra sodium mesotetrakis(p-sulfophenyl)porphyrin (TSPP), with calf thymus DNA has been studied by UV-Vis spectroscopy at five different temperatures (20, 25, 30, 35, and 40°C). The optical absorption spectra of these materials were analyzed to obtain binding constants and stoichiometries using SQUAD software. The results show that the best fitting corresponds to a 1: 1 complex model between a base pair of DNA and these materials. All of the studied porphyrin and phthalocyanines showed strong electrolyte effect, and increasing NaCl concentration induced self-aggregation of these materials. Allometric equations to estimate aboveground biomass (AGB) and plant part biomasses (PPB) of three mangrove species, Rhizophora mangle, Avicennia schaueriana, and Laguncularia racemosa, were determined in Itamaracá, Pernambuco, Brazil (7°48′44″S and 34°49′39″W). Twenty-three to thirty-six trees of each species, ranging in height (H) from 1.6 to 11.8 m and in diameter, at breast height or above prop roots (D), from 2 to 21 cm, were measured, cut, and separated into stems, branches, leaves, and prop roots. Biomass proportions in each tree part were similar among species, excluding prop roots: stems 37–47%, branches 41–46%, and leaves 11–17%. Prop roots represented 37% of AGB in R. mangle. Tree size had a significant but not large influence on biomass distribution among plant parts: as stem diameters increased the proportions allocated to leaves decreased and those to stems and branches increased. AGB and PPB were significantly related to D and D2 × H and the best fittings were obtained with power equations. A few equations from literature fitted the data reasonably well for AGB of one or two of the species but resulted in large errors for the others. Applying the equations to previous measurements of tree diameters in a sample area, AGB for the mangrove site was estimated at 105 Mg ha−1, with 78, 19, and 3% corresponding to biomasses of R. mangle, L. racemosa, and A. schaeuriana trees, respectively.  相似文献

Little is known about the importance of the forest overstorey relative to other factors in controlling the spatial variability in understorey species composition in near-natural temperate broadleaved forests. We addressed this question for the 19 ha ancient forest Suserup Skov (55°22′ N, 11°34′ E) in Denmark, one of the few old-growth temperate broadleaved forest remnants in north-western Europe, by inventorying understorey species composition and environmental conditions in 163 100 m2 plots. We use unconstrained and constrained ordinations, variation partitioning, and Indicator Species Analysis to provide a quantitative assessment of the importance of the forest overstorey in controlling understorey species composition. Comparison of the gradients extracted by unconstrained and constrained ordinations showed that the main gradients in understorey species composition in our old-growth temperate broadleaved forest remnant are not caused by variability in the forest overstorey, but are related to topography and soil, edge effects, and unknown broad-scale factors. Nevertheless, overstorey-related variables uniquely accounted for 15% of the total explained variation in understorey species composition, with the pure overstorey-related (Rpo), topography and soil (Rpt), edge and anthropogenic disturbance effects (Rpa), and spatial (Rps) variation fractions being of equal magnitude. The forward variable selection showed that among the overstorey-related variables understorey light availability and to a lesser extent vertical forest structure were most important for understorey species composition. No unique influence of overstorey tree species identity could be documented. There were many indicator species for high understorey light levels and canopy gap centres, but none for medium or low light or closed canopy. Hence, no understorey species behaved as obligate shade plants. Our study shows that, the forest overstorey has a weak control of understorey species composition in near-natural broadleaved forest, in contrast to results from natural and managed forests comprising both conifer and broadleaved species. Nevertheless, >20% of the understorey species found were indicators of high light conditions or canopy openings. Hence, variability in canopy structure and understorey light availability is important for maintaining understorey species diversity.  相似文献

Algae and the associated macrofauna in two Icelandic intertidal ecosystems under cold and warm influence, respectively, were studied with respect to algae-macrofauna relationships and a possible effect of temperature on community structure. Two sites in Iceland were selected, Sandgerdi ligthhouse (64°8′N 22°40′W) on the southwestern coast, and Grimsey Island (66°33′N 18°04′W), in the north, on the Arctic Circle, where sea temperature is considerably lower (5° approximately). The biomass of algae and the number of species of algae and macrofauna were higher in Sandgerdi than in Grimsey, and the patterns of diversity, evenness, biomass and abundance also differed between the sites. In the intertidal zone of Sandgerdi, a total of 28 species of algae and 45 species of macrofauna were identified whereas only 16 algal species and 27 macrofaunal species were found in Grimsey. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) using algal biomass as the environmental variable were conducted, and revealed significant relationships between algae composition and the associated macrofauna; some macrofauna taxa showed specific trophic or refuge relationships with algal species. According to the CCA, Corallina officinalis showed the highest correlation with macrofaunal assemblages in both study sites. However, correlations between macrofauna and other algae differed between Grimsey and Sandgerdi. The present study, together with additional observations in Greenland waters, shows a general decrease of species richness and diversity towards the north which may primarily be due to the temperature regime.  相似文献

The seasonal variations in biomass, abundance and species composition of zooplankton in relation to hydrography and chlorophyll a were studied in the subarctic waters north of Iceland. The sampling was carried out at approximately monthly intervals from February 1993 to February 1994 at eight stations arranged along a transect extending from 66°16′N–18°50′W to 68°00′N–18°50′W. The mean temperature at 50 m depth showed a clear seasonal pattern, with lowest water temperatures in February (∼1.1°C) and the highest in July (∼5.4°C). The spring growth of the phytoplankton began in late March and culminated during mid-April (∼7.0 mg Chl a m−3). Both the biomass and the abundance of total zooplankton were low during the winter and peaked once during the summer in late May (∼4 g m−2 and ∼38,000 individuals m−2). A total of 42 species and taxonomic groups were identified in the samples. Eight taxa contributed ∼90% of the total zooplankton number. Of these Calanus finmarchicus was by far the most abundant species (∼60% of the total zooplankton). Less important groups were ophiuroid larvae (∼9%), Pseudocalanus spp. (∼8%), Metridia longa (∼4%), C. hyperboreus (∼3%), Acartia longiremis (∼2%), chaetognaths (∼2%) and euphausiid larvae (∼2%). The dominant copepods showed two main patterns in seasonal abundance: C. finmarchicus, C. hyperboreus and C. glacialis had one annual peak in numbers in late May, while Pseudocalanus spp., M. longa and A. longiremis showed two maxima during the summer (July) and autumn (October/November). Ophiuroid larvae and chaetognaths (mainly Sagitta elegans) peaked during the middle of July, while the number of euphausiid eggs and larvae was greatest from May to July. The succession in population structure of C. finmarchicus indicated its main spawning to be in April and May, coincident with the phytoplankton spring bloom. A minor spawning was also observed sometime between August and October. However, the offspring from this second spawning contributed only insignificantly to the overwintering stock of C. finmarchicus. Received: 12 September 1997 / Accepted: 1 March 1998  相似文献

Cyanogenesis-the production of toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) by damaged tissue-inTrifolium repens L. (white clover), a type of most important pasture legume, has been studied at different elevations of Darjeeling Himalaya (latitude-27° 2′ 57″ N, longitude-88° 15′ 45″ E). Release of HCN takes place due to reaction between cyanogenic glucosides stored in vacuoles of the leaf cell and the corresponding enzyme β-glucosidase present in another compartment, often cell wall. Cyanogenesis, a defense system in plant, protects the clover from herbivore and inhibits grazing. Biochemical analysis showed the presence and absence of the cyanogenesis trait within the population in different proportions at different elevations. Acyanogenic individuals also showed variations with respect to presence or absence of either cyanogenic glucosides or β-glucosidase enzyme or both. The distribution of cyanogenic and acyanogenic plants was found in all places, but at lower altitudes (2084–2094 m) the dominating plants were cyanogenic whereas in higher altitude (2560 m) the dominating plants were acyanogenic. It was observed that blister beetle (Mylabris pustalata Thunb.) and the mollusc (Macrochlamys tusgurium Benson.) were the most common consumer of leaflets ofT. repens. Six categories of damage on white clover leaf by these animals were recorded. Our results suggest that the two selective factors or forces i.e. very cold temperature (harmful to cyanogenic plants) at higher altitude as well as indiscriminate but preferential predation (harmful to acyanogenic plants) interact to affect the system of cyanogenesis and also to cause the stable and protective polymorphism inT. repens rather than genotypic differences present among the plants.  相似文献
