Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) potentially plays a major role in sustaining the high productivity and biological diversity of coral reefs. However, data are scarce regarding sources and sinks of DON. This study, for the first time, determined the 15N isotopic composition of total dissolved nitrogen (δ15NTDN), reflecting the isotopic signature of DON, in the water column over a coral reef. The uniformity in δ15NTDN during high tide (3.2 ± 0.3 ‰) indicated that the DON was mainly derived from offshore waters. In contrast, higher spatial heterogeneity of δ15NTDN (3.1 ± 0.9 ‰) and DON concentrations during low tide indicated the existence of local DON sources patchily distributed over the reef. Low δ15NTDN values located mid-reef were indicative of DON release from organisms that obtained their N via N2 fixation, whereas high δ15NTDN appeared to reflect localized release of DON by organisms exposed to dissolved inorganic nitrogen with elevated 15N, such as from terrestrial and offshore inputs. Collectively, the results highlight the importance of spatial patterns in DON release from reef communities in the N cycling of coral reefs.  相似文献

Isotope analyses of nitrate and algae were used to gain better understanding of sources of nitrate to Florida’s karst springs and processes affecting nitrate in the Floridan aquifer at multiple scales. In wet years, δ15N and δ18O of nitrate ranged from +3 to +9‰ in headwater springs in north Florida, indicating nitrification of soil ammonium as the dominant source. With below normal rainfall, the δ15N and δ18O of nitrate were higher in almost all springs (reaching +20.2 and +15.3‰, respectively) and were negatively correlated with dissolved oxygen. In springs with values of δ15N-NO3 and δ18O-NO3 greater than +10‰, nitrate concentrations declined 40–50% in dry years and variations in the δ15N and δ18O of nitrate were consistent with the effects of denitrification. Modeling of the aquifer as a closed system yielded in situ fractionation caused by denitrification of 9 and 18‰ for Δ18O and Δ15N, respectively. We observed no strong evidence for local sources of nitrate along spring runs; concentrations declined downstream (0.42–3.3?μmol-NO3 L?1 per km) and the isotopic dynamics of algae and nitrate indicated a closed system. Correlation between the δ15N composition of nitrate and algae was observed at regional and spring-run scales, but the relationship was complicated by varying isotopic fractionation factors associated with nitrate uptake (Δ ranged from 2 to 13‰). Our study demonstrates that nitrate inputs to Florida’s springs are derived predominantly from non-point sources and that denitrification is detectable in aquifer waters with relatively long residence time (i.e., matrix flow).  相似文献

Stable isotope composition of organisms from different trophic groups collected from a semi‐isolated wetland pool in the Ross River estuary, northern Australia, was analysed to determine if there was a consistent relationship between δ13C, δ15N and trophic level that could be used to assign trophic positions. A strong linear negative relationship between δ13C and δ15N was detected for the three trophic levels considered (primary producers, primary consumers and secondary consumers). This relationship was consistent among trophic levels, differing only in height, that is, on δ15N values, which indicate trophic positions. A difference of 3.6–3.8‰ between trophic levels was present, suggesting a δ15N fractionation of approximately 3.7‰, a value slightly higher than the commonly assumed δ15N fractionation of approximately 3.4‰. The relationship between δ13C and δ15N was similar for invertebrate and fish primary consumers, indicating similar δ15N trophic fractionation for both groups, meaning trophic positions and trophic length could be reliably calculated based on either invertebrates or fish.  相似文献

Temporal changes in fatty acid composition and δ15N, δ13C stable isotope values of the phytobenthos growing on artificial clay substrates under natural conditions over a 28-day period at an upstream and a downstream site in the Kowie River near Grahamstown were investigated in 2012. High concentrations of diatom markers 16:1ω7 and 20:5ω3 fatty acids were recorded, especially at the downstream site, reflecting the importance of diatoms in contributing to the phytobenthos communities at that station. After day 7 at the downstream site the average δ15N value of the phytobenthos was lighter, gradually increasing by ~2‰ and ~5‰ overall to heavier values on day 28. At the upstream site there were no significant changes (<1‰ increase) in δ15N values of the phytobenthos over time. Stable nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon (δ13C) signatures in the phytobenthos communities were significantly different between sites (one-way ANOVA; p < 0.001). The stable isotope values and fatty acid concentrations of phytobenthos at the downstream site were different to those of the phytobenthos at the upstream site, and they changed concurrently with changes in the phytobenthos community structure. At the downstream site there was a strong correlation of the δ15N of phytobenthos with nitrates (R = 0.56) and time (weeks; R = 0.81). However, the fatty acids were not specific enough to characterise the composition of phytobenthos communities. Other biomarker methods, such as stable isotopes and microscopic examination of the communities, were found to be useful. The results from this relatively small-scale tile experiment indicate the complexity of changes in fatty acid composition and δ15N, δ13C stable isotope values of a phytobenthos community. Stable isotope and fatty acid composition can be successfully used to map changes in phytobenthos composition and carbon and nitrogen flow patterns along a river continuum.  相似文献

In forests of the humid subtropics of China, chronically elevated nitrogen (N) deposition, predominantly as ammonium (NH4+), causes significant nitrate (NO3?) leaching from well‐drained acid forest soils on hill slopes (HS), whereas significant retention of NO3? occurs in near‐stream environments (groundwater discharge zones, GDZ). To aid our understanding of N transformations on the catchment level, we studied spatial and temporal variabilities of concentration and natural abundance (δ15N and δ18O) of nitrate (NO3?) in soil pore water along a hydrological continuum in the N‐saturated Tieshanping (TSP) catchment, southwest China. Our data show that effective removal of atmogenic NH4+ and production of NO3? in soils on HS were associated with a significant decrease in δ15N‐NO3?, suggesting efficient nitrification despite low soil pH. The concentration of NO3? declined sharply along the hydrological flow path in the GDZ. This decline was associated with a significant increase in both δ15N and δ18O of residual NO3?, providing evidence that the GDZ acts as an N sink due to denitrification. The observed apparent 15N enrichment factor (ε) of NO3? of about ?5‰ in the GDZ is similar to values previously reported for efficient denitrification in riparian and groundwater systems. Episode studies in the summers of 2009, 2010 and 2013 revealed that the spatial pattern of δ15N and δ18O‐NO3? in soil water was remarkably similar from year to year. The importance of denitrification as a major N sink was also seen at the catchment scale, as largest δ15N‐NO3? values in stream water were observed at lowest discharge, confirming the importance of the relatively small GDZ for N removal under base flow conditions. This study, explicitly recognizing hydrologically connected landscape elements, reveals an overlooked but robust N sink in N‐saturated, subtropical forests with important implications for regional N budgets.  相似文献

The goals of the study were: (1) to evaluate stable isotopic analysis (SIA) in determining the site fidelity of mummichogs, Fundulus heteroclitus, along a smaller spatial scale (~10?km) in homogenous habitat type relative to previous SIA studies; and (2) to cross-validate SIA results with mark-recapture results from a study conducted concurrently at the same sites in the upper Miramichi River estuary (MRE), New Brunswick, Canada influenced by two pulp mills and three municipal wastewater facilities. Mummichogs sampled at 9 sites along the upper MRE (n?=?198) had overall mean (± SD) ratios of ?21.03?±?1.45 ‰ δ13C and 11.37?±?1.02 ‰ δ15N. Mean δ13C and δ15N ratios were significantly different among sites with mean δ13C increasing in a downstream direction and distinct δ15N group signatures along the northern and southern shores. Multivariate analyses detected seven distinct groups out of nine sites sampled and these differences appear to be related to wastewater treatment influences, thus demonstrating the utility of SIA as a method to determine the site-specificity of organisms on a relatively small spatial scale within homogenous habitat within an estuary. These results, in addition to the scarcity of statistical outliers (3?%) during examination of isotopic ratios within sites support the results of a previous mark-recapture study that demonstrated very few mummichogs (3.4?%) in the upper MRE move more than 200?m.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) isotope systematics were investigated at two high-elevation ombrotrophic peat bogs polluted by farming and heavy industry. Our objective was to identify N sources and sinks for isotope mass balance considerations. For the first time, we present a time-series of δ15Ν values of atmospheric input at the same locations as δ15Ν values of living Sphagnum and peat. The mean δ15Ν values systematically increased in the order: input NH4 + (?10.0‰) < input NO3 ? (?7.9‰) < peat porewater (?5.6‰) < Sphagnum (?5.0‰) < shallow peat (?4.2‰) < deep peat (?2.2‰) < runoff (?1.4‰) < porewater N2O (1.4‰). Surprisingly, N of Sphagnum was isotopically heavier than N of the atmospheric input (P < 0.001). If partial incorporation of reactive N from the atmosphere into Sphagnum was isotopically selective, the residual N would have to be isotopically extremely light. Such N, however, was not identified anywhere in the ecosystem. Alternatively, Sphagnum may have contained an admixture of isotopically heavier N. Ambient air contains such N in the form of N215ΝN2 = 0‰). Because high energy is required to break the triple bond, microbial N fixation is likely to proceed only under limited availability of pollutant N. Also for the first time, a δ15Ν comparison is presented between anoxic deeper peat and porewater N2O. Isotopically light N is removed from anoxic substrate by denitrification, whose final product, N2, escapes into the atmosphere. Porewater N2O is an isotopically heavy residuum following partial N2O reduction to N2.  相似文献

Downstream from metropolitan Paris (France), a large amount of ammonium is discharged into the Seine River by the effluents of the wastewater treatment plant at Achères. To assess the extent of nitrification and denitrification in the water column, concentrations and isotopic compositions of ammonium (δ15N–NH4+) and nitrate (δ15N–NO3, δ18O–NO3) were measured during summer low-flow conditions along the lower Seine and its estuary. The results indicated that most of the ammonium released from the wastewater treatment plant is nitrified in the lower Seine River and its upper estuary, but there was no evidence for water-column denitrification. In the lower part of the estuary, however, concentration and isotopic data for nitrate were not consistent with simple mixing between riverine and marine nitrate. A significant departure of the nitrate isotopic composition from what would be expected from simple mixing of freshwater and marine nitrates suggested coupled nitrification and denitrification in the water, in spite of the apparent conservative behavior of nitrate. Denitrification rates of approximately 0.02 mg N/L/h were estimated for this part of the estuary.  相似文献

Nitrogen stable isotope values (δ15N) have commonly been used as a qualitative indicator of catchment urbanization in estuaries, but no quantitative relationship has to date been established between δ15N and degree of urbanization. We sampled five species of common estuarine fish (Mugil cephalus, Acanthopagrus australis, Sillago ciliata, Gerres subfasciatus and Herklotsichthys castelnaui) of different trophic levels from six estuaries in Southeast Queensland, Australia, to test if a quantitative relationship exists between fish δ15N and urbanization in the catchment. Degree of urbanization (urban %) in the catchment adjacent to the tidal estuary was measured using polygons constructed in Google Earth images, and verified using data from the detailed Queensland Land Use Mapping Project (QLUMP). Significant linear relationships exist between fish δ15N and urban % in most cases irrespective of the section of the estuary (upper, middle and lower) where the fish were caught, with no difference in slope and elevation between lines established for different sections. Inclusion of additional fish δ15N data from other Australian estuaries in a combined multiple regression model adding trophic level as a predictor generated a significant relationship predicting increase in fish δ15N values with increasing urban % and trophic level. There is therefore a generic quantitative relationship between estuarine fish δ15N values and degree of urbanization applicable to different fish species, geographic location or feeding habit. While the generality of this relationship needs to be tested further in other geographic locations, our findings potentially improve the applicability of fish δ15N values as a quantitative indicator of urban influence in estuaries.  相似文献

The foliar stable N isotope ratio (δ15N) can provide integrated information on ecosystem N cycling. Here we present the δ15N of plant and soil in four remote typical tropical rainforests (one primary and three secondary) of southern China. We aimed to examine if (1) foliar δ15N in the study forests is negative, as observed in other tropical and subtropical sites in eastern Asia; (2) variation in δ15N among different species is smaller compared to that in many N-limited temperate and boreal ecosystems; and (3) the primary forest is more N rich than the younger secondary forests and therefore is more 15N enriched. Our results show that foliar δ15N ranged from ?5.1 to 1.3 ‰ for 39 collected plant species with different growth strategies and mycorrhizal types, and that for 35 species it was negative. Soil NO3 ? had low δ15N (?11.4 to ?3.2 ‰) and plant NO3 ? uptake could not explain the negative foliar δ15N values (NH4 + was dominant in the soil inorganic-N fraction). We suggest that negative values might be caused by isotope fractionation during soil NH4 + uptake and mycorrhizal N transfer, and by direct uptake of atmospheric NH3/NH4 +. The variation in foliar δ15N among species (by about 6 ‰) was smaller than in many N-limited ecosystems, which is typically about or over 10 ‰. The primary forest had a larger N capital in plants than the secondary forests. Foliar δ15N and the enrichment factor (foliar δ15N minus soil δ15N) were higher in the primary forest than in the secondary forests, albeit differences were small, while there was no consistent pattern in soil δ15N between primary and secondary forests.  相似文献

The regulatory roles of temperature, eutrophication and oxygen availability on benthic nitrogen (N) cycling and the stoichiometry of regenerated nitrogen and phosphorus (P) were explored along a Baltic Sea estuary affected by treated sewage discharge. Rates of sediment denitrification, anammox, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA), nutrient exchange, oxygen (O2) uptake and penetration were measured seasonally. Sediments not affected by the nutrient plume released by the sewage treatment plant (STP) showed a strong seasonality in rates of O2 uptake and coupled nitrification–denitrification, with anammox never accounting for more than 20 % of the total dinitrogen (N2) production. N cycling in sediments close to the STP was highly dependent on oxygen availability, which masked temperature-related effects. These sediments switched from low N loss and high ammonium (NH4 +) efflux under hypoxic conditions in the fall, to a major N loss system in the winter when the sediment surface was oxidized. In the fall DNRA outcompeted denitrification as the main nitrate (NO3 ?) reduction pathway, resulting in N recycling and potential spreading of eutrophication. A comparison with historical records of nutrient discharge and denitrification indicated that the total N loss in the estuary has been tightly coupled to the total amount of nutrient discharge from the STP. Changes in dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) released from the STP agreed well with variations in sedimentary N2 removal. This indicates that denitrification and anammox efficiently counterbalance N loading in the estuary across the range of historical and present-day anthropogenic nutrient discharge. Overall low N/P ratios of the regenerated nutrient fluxes impose strong N limitation for the pelagic system and generate a high potential for nuisance cyanobacterial blooms.  相似文献

To gain a better understanding on the trophic ecology of New Granada sea catfish, Ariopsis canteri, and their linkage to mangroves, nitrogen and stable carbon isotopes (δ15N and δ13C), as well as Bayesian mixing models, were used to explore trophic dynamics and potential ontogenic feeding shifts across different size classes: class I (8–20 cm), class II (21–32 cm) and class III (>32 cm). The study area was the estuary of the Atrato River Delta, where information about fish ecology is scarce. The δ13C of size class I was lower (mean ± s.d . = −24.96 ± 0.69‰) than that of size classes II (−22.20 ± 0.90‰) and III (−22.00 ± 1.96‰). The δ15N of size class I was lower (mean ± s.d . = 8.50 ± 0.67‰) than that of size classes II (9.77 ± 0.60‰) and III (10.00 ± 0.66‰). Body size was positively and significantly correlated to δ15N and δ13C. Individuals with LT > 32 cm presented the highest estimated trophic position (3.8). Five-source mixing models indicated that for class I, the mean estimated contribution of macroalgae was the highest (6%–57% c.i. ), and for classes II and III, the mean estimated contribution of macrophytes was the highest (3%–53% c.i. and 4%–53% c.i. , respectively). Ontogenetic feeding shifts of A. canteri were confirmed evidencing decreasing intraspecific competition between small and large individuals. Results suggest that mangroves are a nursery and feeding ground habitat for this species and that mangroves support A. canteri mainly due to the substrate/habitat that supports sources in the food webs. These results can be used in ecosystem-based fishery management focused on the protection of extensive mangrove areas in the southern Caribbean Sea.  相似文献

Wood nitrogen isotope composition (δ15N) provides a potential retrospective evaluation of ecosystem N status but refinement of this index is needed. We calibrated current wood δ15N of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), an ectomycorrhizal tree species, against a productivity gradient of contrasting coastal forests of southern Vancouver Island (Canada). We then examined historical δ15N via increment cores, and tested whether wood δ15N corresponded with climatic fluctuations. Extractable soil N ranged from 11 to 43 kg N ha?1 along the productivity gradient, and was characterized by a progressive replacement of N forms (amino acids, NH4 + and NO3 ?). Current wood δ15N was significantly less depleted (?5.0 to ?2.6 ‰) with increasing productivity, although linear correlations were stronger with Δδ15N (the difference between wood and soil δ15N) to standardize the extent of isotopic fractionation by ectomycorrhizal fungi. An overall decline in wood δ15N of 0.9 ‰ over the years 1900–2009 was detected, but trends diverged widely among plots, including positive, negative and no trend with time. We did not detect significant correlations in detrended wood δ15N with mean annual temperature or precipitation. The contemporary patterns in stand productivity, soil N supply and wood δ15N were moderately strong, but interpreting historical patterns in δ15N was challenging because of potential variations in N uptake related to stand dynamics. The lack of wood δ15N correlations with climate may be partly due to methodological limitations, but might also reflect the relative stability in N supply due to the overriding constraints of soil organic matter quantity and quality.  相似文献

We present 42 dual-isotope nitrate analyses of fresh water samples collected in the St. Lawrence River between June 2006 and July 2008. Measured δ15N–NO3 ? and δ18O–NO3 ? values correlate negatively, while δ18O–NO3 ? displays no negative correlation with nitrate concentration. This suggests that nitrate uptake and/or elimination by denitrification is not the main driver of observed variations in nitrate concentration and isotopic signature in the St. Lawrence River. In addition, δ18O–NO3 ? is negatively correlated with the seasonally variable δ18O of ambient water, indicating that the variation in the isotopic signature of nitrate is barely modulated by in-stream nitrate regeneration (nitrification). It rather is constrained by along-river changes in the external sources of nitrate. Given the distinct nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O) isotopic signature of atmospheric nitrate, we argue that observed seasonal variations of δ15N–NO3 ? and δ18O–NO3 ? in the St. Lawrence River are due to variable contributions of snowmelt-derived water. Based on a N and O isotope mass balance, we show that total nitrate loading in the St. Lawrence River is dominated by a N input from the Great Lakes (47 ± 28 %) and from nitrate regeneration of both internal and external N (48 ± 22 %). While temporal nitrate N and O isotope dynamics in the St. Lawrence River are mainly influenced by the atmospheric N input fluctuations, with an increase in atmospheric loading during spring, atmospheric N plays overall a rather insignificant role with regards to the N budget (5 ± 4 %).  相似文献

The eastern Pacific warm tongue is a region of stable and elevated sea surface temperature (SST) located just north of the equator in the eastern Pacific. This warm water mass is thought to influence the position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) in the eastern Pacific and to directly influence climate in Central America. To assess the use of corals in the development of paleoclimatic reconstructions in this region, we have developed oxygen isotope (δ18O) time-series from multiple specimens of the massive coral Porites lobata collected at Clipperton Atoll (10°18′N, 109°13′ W). Six near-monthly δ18O records from different sized (age) colonies where produced for the interval 1986–1994, and three of these were extended back to 1969. All corals sampled were found to contain numerous fish-grazing skeletal scars (~0.5?mm deep scallop shaped hiatuses). Samples collected at 1?mm intervals showed anomalous 18O/16O in the area of a bite scar, with 2 to 2.5?mm sampling intervals (10–12/year) minimizing these effects. Our results show that the average δ18O disequilibrium offset (vital effect) from equilibrium seawater composition for individual corals can vary by up to 0.4‰. However all δ18O results suggest that the vital effect offset is constant over time. Similar “offsets” are observed in the tops of old (age=~100?y) and young (age=~10?y) colonies, further suggesting that the biologically mediated vital effect offset does not change as a Porites colony ages. A 6-coral average composite δ18O record was constructed from 1985–1994 and a 3-coral average δ18Oanomaly record was constructed from 1969–1994. Regression analysis between monthly SST and the 6 coral average δ18O records yields an r 2 correlation of 0.54 (individual r 2-values ranged from 0.27–0.55). The 3 coral δ18Oanomaly average record has an even lower correlation to SST, with an r 2 of 0.40. Potential causes of the only moderate correlation to SST are explored and we find that inferred salinity effects, fish grazing scars, and slight chronology imperfections have all contributed to a reduced correlation to SST. Nevertheless, all El Niño events in this time period appear to be recorded by coral skeletal δ18O.  相似文献

Stable isotope natural abundance measurements integrate across several biogeochemical processes in ecosystem N and C dynamics. Here, we report trends in natural isotope abundance (δ13C and δ15N in plant and soil) along a climosequence of 33 Nothofagus forest stands located within Patagonia, Southern Argentina. We measured 28 different abiotic variables (both climatic variables and soil properties) to characterize environmental conditions at each of the 33 sites. Foliar δ13C values ranged from ?35.4‰ to ?27.7‰, and correlated positively with foliar δ15N values, ranging from ?3.7‰ to 5.2‰. Soil δ13C and δ15N values reflected the isotopic trends of the foliar tissues and ranged from ?29.8‰ to ?25.3‰, and ?4.8‰ to 6.4‰, respectively, with no significant differences between Nothofagus species (Nothofagus pumilio, Nothofagus antarctica, Nothofagus betuloides). Principal component analysis and multiple regressions suggested that mainly water availability variables (mean annual precipitation), but not soil properties, explained between 42% and 79% of the variations in foliar and soil δ13C and δ15N natural abundance, which declined with increased moisture supply. We conclude that a decline in water use efficiency at wetter sites promotes both the depletion of heavy C and N isotopes in soil and plant biomass. Soil δ13C values were higher than those of the plant tissues and this difference increased as annual precipitation increased. No such differences were apparent when δ15N values in soil and plant were compared, which indicates that climatic differences contributed more to the overall C balance than to the overall N balance in these forest ecosystems.  相似文献

Nitrogen availability and N‐cycling dynamics across ecosystems play a critical role in plant functioning and species distribution. Measurements of 15N natural abundance provides a way to assess ecosystem N dynamics, and the range of nitrogen stable isotope values (δ15N) for plants in an ecosystem can indicate divergent strategies for N uptake. We tested the hypotheses that the N‐rich seasonally dry forest would have higher soil and leaf δ15N and a smaller range of leaf δ15N values compared to the N‐poor cerradão (savanna woodland). We measured N concentration and δ15N in two soil depths and leaves of 27 woody species in cerradão and 26 in seasonally dry forest. As expected, total soil N concentration decreased while soil δ15N value increased with soil depth. Regardless of soil depth, seasonally dry forest soils had higher δ15N and total N concentration compared to cerradão soils. Foliar δ15N values varied from ?6.4‰ to 5.9‰ in cerradão and from ?2.3‰ to 8.4‰ in seasonally dry forest plants. Phylogenetically independent contrasts analysis and comparisons of δ15N mean values of the most abundant species and species co‐occurring in both sites confirmed the hypothesis of higher δ15N for seasonally dry forest in comparison to cerradão. These results corroborate the expectation of higher soil and leaf δ15N values in sites with higher soil N availability. However, except for the most abundant species, no across‐site leaf–soil (δ15N leaf –δ15N soil) differences (Δδ15N) were found suggesting that differences in leaf δ15N between cerradão and seasonally dry forest are driven by differences in soil δ15N. Variation of leaf δ15N was large in both sites and only slightly higher in cerradão, suggesting high diversity of N use strategies for both cerradão and seasonally dry forest communities.  相似文献

We measured stable-nitrogen (δ15N) and stable-carbon (δ13C) isotope ratios in muscle and hair from 7 northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) from the Pribilof Islands, Alaska, and 27 Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus), and 14 harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) from the Gulf of Alaska and coast of Washington State, in order to contrast dietary information derived from isotopic vs. available conventional dietary studies. Stable-nitrogen-isotope analysis of muscle revealed that harbor seals were enriched over sea lions (mean δ15N = 18.6‰vs. 17.5‰) which were in turn enriched over northern fur seals (mean δ15N = 16.6‰). Trophic segregation among these species likely results primarily from differential reliance on herring (Clupea harengus), Atka mackerel (Pleurogrammus monopterygius), and large vs. small walleye pollock (Theregra chalcogramma). According to their δ15N values, adult male Steller sea lions showed a higher trophic position than adult females (mean δ15N: 18.0‰vs. 17.2‰), whereas adult female northern fur seals were trophically higher than juvenile male fur seals (mean δ15N: 16.5‰vs. 15.0‰). Each of these observed differences likely resulted from differential reliance on squid or differences in the size range of pollock consumed. Three northern fur seal pups showed higher δ15N enrichment over adults (mean 17.7‰vs. 15.8‰) due to their reliance on their mother's milk. Stable-carbon isotope measurements of hair revealed a cline toward more negative values with latitude. Segregation in hair δ13C between Steller sea lions and harbor seals off the coast of Washington (mean δ13C: ?13.6‰vs.?15.0‰) reflected the greater association of harbor seals with freshwater input from the Columbia River. Our study demonstrates the utility of the stable isotope approach to augment conventional dietary analyses of pinnipeds and other marine mammals.  相似文献

Sources and distribution of particulate organic matter in surface waters of the Humber and Thames estuaries and in the East Anglian plume in the southern North Sea were investigated in winter 2006/2007. Carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) stable isotopes provided evidence for the presence of three particulate organic matter sources; riverine plankton (δ13C ?30 ‰ and δ15N 7.9 ‰) identified in the Thames estuary only, marine plankton (average δ13C ?21.4 ‰ and δ15N 4.5 ‰) and a third source with an enriched 13C signature (>?16.7 ‰) and elevated C:N ratio (>12.7). Particulate organic matter with enriched 13C values were observed throughout the Humber estuary and at the marine end-member of the Thames estuary. While bacterial cycling of organic carbon undoubtedly takes place within these estuaries, these processes on their own are unlikely to account for the isotopic signatures seen. The 13C enriched organic matter source is suggested to be due to particulate organic matter input from marsh plants and seagrasses such as Spartina spp. and Zostera on the adjacent salt marshes and mudflats and/or macroalgae along the banks of the estuaries. This 13C enriched signal was also identified approximately 50 km offshore within the southern North Sea, in the East Anglian plume, which transports UK riverine water off-shore in a discrete plume. This plume therefore provides a mechanism to transport this estuarine derived organic matter pool offshore out of the estuaries. These results indicate that estuarine derived organic matter from marsh plants, seagrasses and/or macroalgae contributes to the southern North Sea organic matter pool and is therefore likely to contribute to winter-time shelf sea carbon and nitrogen cycles.  相似文献
