The establishment of ovarian activity during lactation was studied in the postpartum period of Rambouillet, Dorset and Finnish Landrace ewes following lambing during the month of October (1981). The mean postpartum intervals to first ovulation and first estrus were 22.7 and 53.0 for Rambouillets, 25.2 and 51.0 for Dorsets, and 22.5 and 49.7 days for Finnish Landrace ewes. Estrus was not associated with the first ovulation postpartum in any breed. The number of silent ovulations prior to the first estrus was highest in the Rambouillet and lowest in Finnish Landrace breeds. Of the 18 ewes in the project, 14 had normal luteal phase lengths, 1 had a possible short luteal phase and 3 had prolonged luteal phases following the first ovulation postpartum. The first service conception rate of all ewes bred was 82% (14 17 ) at an average of 52 days postpartum. The lambing rate following the autumn breeding was higher (2.14 +/- 0.14) than the lambing rate which followed the previous spring breeding (1.28 +/- 0.11).  相似文献

The five Northern European short-tailed sheep breeds present in North America are the Finnsheep, Romanov, Icelandic, Shetland and Gotland. The Finnsheep and Romanov were first imported in 1966 and 1986, respectively, for their high reproductive performance. The Shetland, Icelandic and Gotland breeds were first imported in 1980, 1985 and 2005, respectively, for the uniqueness of their physical appearance and their unique fleeces desired by fiber craftspeople. There have been no scientific studies conducted on the performance of the Shetland, Icelandic or Gotland breeds relative to other breeds of sheep in North America. However, the Shetland and Icelandic breeds have become very popular in the United States and ranked 9th and 18th, respectively, among 35 breeds of sheep for number of purebred animals registered in 2008. The performance of the Finnsheep breed in North America relative to domestic breeds has been thoroughly investigated. Compared to several domestic purebreds and crosses, sheep with Finnsheep breeding had a younger age at puberty, greater fertility to autumn mating, greater litter size, greater survival to weaning, similar growth rate, similar subcutaneous fat thickness, smaller loin muscle area and greater percentage of kidney and pelvic fat. Each 1% increase in Finnsheep breeding in ewes was associated with approximately 0.01 more lambs born per ewe lambing. In North American studies, Romanov ewes were superior to Finnsheep ewes for reproductive rate and lamb production per ewe under both autumn and spring mating. Lambs of the two breeds were similar for survival, growth and carcass traits. Romanov and Romanov-cross ewes produced fleeces that were heavily contaminated with medulated and colored fibers and were of very low commercial value. Three composite breeds containing 25% to 49% Finnsheep breeding (Polypay, Rideau Arcott and Outaouais Arcott) were developed in North America and are now more popular than the Finnsheep breed.  相似文献

The correlations between some meteorological parameters and fertility data were evaluated in Barki x Rahmani crossbred ewes using the records of five consecutive years (2003-2007). Additionally, estrus detection and ultrasonic evaluation were applied on eighteen mature dry ewes during breeding and non-breeding seasons. The effect of lactation was evaluated by monitoring estrus behavior in ninety four lactating ewes from 40 to 120 d after parturition. Moreover, ultrasonography was used to identify ovarian activity in six cyclic and six acyclic non-lactating ewes. Results revealed that relative estrus occurrence and fertile mating were positively correlated (P <0.05) with high temperature and long photoperiod (conditions of summer season), and were negatively correlated (P < 0.01) with rainfall (condition of winter season). During breeding season, estrus rate, serum progesterone concentration, and diameter of largest follicle were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than those observed during the non-breeding season. Furthermore, month of parturition had a significant effect (P < 0.05) on estrus rate of lactating ewes where ewes that lambed in August, September, and October recorded higher estrus rate than those lambed in November and December. However, the lactational strength did not exert any deleterious effect on the reproductive performance of lactating ewes.In conclusion, in Egypt under subtropical conditions, Barki x Rahmani crossbred ewes exerted optimum estrus behavior and fertile mating during summer season. The reduction in estrus activity during lactation was due to the seasonal effect rather than lactational stress.  相似文献

Age at puberty, estrous activity and growth were evaluated in 294 straightbred and reciprocal crossbred gilts maintained in confinement conditions. Trial 1 used straightbred Landrace (L), Yorkshire (Y) and reciprocal crossbred (LY, YL) gilts. Trial 2 used LY and YL gilts, and Trial 3 used L and Duroc (D) reciprocal crossbred gilts (LD, DL). Daily observations for estrous activity with a mature boar were initiated at 150 days of age and continued until gilts reached 255 days of age. Gilts not exhibiting estrus by 255 days of age were examined by laparoscopy to determine reproductive status. In Trial 1, age at puberty was greater for Y gilts compared to L and reciprocal crossbred gilts. Differences between reciprocal crosses for age at puberty were not significant in any trial. In Trial 1, the percentage of gilts exhibiting regular estrous cycles at 195 days of age was lower for Y gilts than for the other three groups of gilts; however, by 225 days of age, this difference was not significant. In all trials, reciprocal crossbred gilts did not differ with respect to percentage exhibiting regular estrous cycles or in percentage prepubertal. In Trial 1, Y gilts had a higher percentage prepubertal at 255 days of age than the reciprocal crossbred gilts. The percentage of gilts exhibiting behavioral anestrus at 255 days of age did not differ among breed groups within any trial. Based on these observations, we concluded the breed maternal effects were small or nonexistent relative to direct additive and nonadditive genetic effects in the breed combinations that were investigated.  相似文献

The breeding season was 157, 154, <126, 210 and 217 days for Rambouillet, Columbia, Suffolk, Rambouillet x Finnish Landrace and Columbia x Finnish Landrace ewes respectively. Treatment of cyclic ewes with pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) (500 IU), following a 12-day treatment with progestin-containing intravaginal sponges, did not affect fertility, but did decrease the time from sponge removal to estrus, (control 48.0 +/- 3.1 hr; PMSG 39.4 +/- 1.8 hr) to the preovulatory surge of LH (control 52.7 +/- 2.8 hr; PMSG 39.0 +/- 1.7 hr) and FSH (control 52.3 +/- 2.9 hr; PMSG 42.8 +/- 1.6 hr) and caused an elevation of serum LH levels prior to the preovulatory surge (control 1.25 +/- 0.18 ng/ml; PMSG 2.31 +/- 0.22 ng/ml). Exposure of the purebred ewes to 18 hours of daylight in January, decreasing by 30 minutes a week subsequently, counteracted the seasonal reduction in the number of ewes lambing following induced breeding under natural daylight in May. Prolificacy was greatest in crossbred ewes and their fertility was not affected by season. Gestation period was longer for fall-bred ewes and varied with breed.  相似文献

Ewes of three exotic breeds (Florida Native, Barbados Blackbelly and St. Croix) showed no periparturient rise in fecal egg counts (PPR) when housed from late fall through lambing and weaning. Domestic breed ewes (Rambouillet and Finn-Dorset × Rambouillet) showed a pronounced PPR 6–7 weeks post-lambing while St. Croix × domestic ewes showed an intermediate PPR under similar conditions. There was no PPR in non-lambing ewes.In a second experiment, breed differences in the PPR were not as pronounced when ewes were allowed to graze a contaminated pasture after lambing. Florida Native, St. Croix and 34 St. Croix × 14 domestic showed lower PPRs than the remaining breeds (Barbados Blackbelly, F1 hybrids of exotic and domestic breeds and domestic ewes), but the magnitude of the PPR was generally small in all breeds. No relationship was observed between hemoglobin genotype and PPR in either experiment. It was concluded that a low or absent PPR is an important manifestation of breed resistance in exotic ewes and that this may be useful as a marker for breeding parasite-resistant sheep.  相似文献

Groups of Romney ewes were joined with either Dorset or Romney rams on December 24 1975 and further groups joined on January 30 1976. A control group was subjected to laparotomy and joined with Romney rams after first ovulation was observed. Matings were recorded daily in all groups. At weekly intervals rams were separated from ewes and bled every 10 minutes for one hour. The plasma was radioimmunoassayed for testosterone.Ewes run with rams showed their first estrus of the breeding season earlier than controls and their onset was more synchronised. The time of ram joining did not affect the time of first estrus but ewes joined with Dorsets showed their first estrus earlier than those with Romneys. Romney rams had significantly higher mean testosterone levels than Dorsets on 5 of the 11 weekly bleedings throughout summer. The testosterone level decreased significantly over the seven consecutive bleedings of the hourly sampling period in five weeks and a significant interaction between breed of ram and testosterone level of consecutive bleedings was observed in three weeks. The results show that testosterone levels in Dorset and Romney rams during summer do not reflect the effectiveness of the breeds in inducing the early onset of estrus in Romney ewes.  相似文献

Influence of melatonin on reproductive performance was evaluated by randomly allotting Polypay-type ewes to four treatments: controls in drylot, melatonin-treated ewes in drylot, controls on range, and melatonin-treated ewes on range. An additional group of Targhees and Rambouillets was randomized by breed as control ewes or melatonin-treated ewes to test effect of melatonin in range ewes. All ewes were supplemented with 0.34 kg/head alfalfa-barley (1:1) pellets from 1600 to 1630 h daily, from April 15 to June 30. Ewes maintained on range received no further supplementation, while ewes in drylot received alfalfa pellets for maintenance. Melatonin was fed at 10 mg hd(-1) d(-1) in the pellet to designated ewes in drylot or on range. Three rams were put with each group of ewes on June 1 and rotated among groups at 7-d intervals during the first 30 d of breeding to reduce sire differences. After the first 30 d, ewe groups were combined with all rams. Melatonin induced (P < 0.01) an earlier onset of estrus (approximately 17 d) as indicated by earlier lambing dates in Polypay-type, Rambouillet, and Targhee ewes managed on spring range. Melatonin also increased (P < 0.01) the number of ewes that conceived during the first 30 d of breeding (June) for both management treatments (drylot and range) and for all breeds.  相似文献

Effects of early weaning, lactation, and day-of-year lambing on the ability of Polypay ewes to rebreed following winter and summer lambings were evaluated. Winter lambing ewes did not successfully rebreed while lactating. However, when winter-born lambs were weaned at 31 days postpartum, more ewes rebred and produced summer lambs (35.7%) than when lambs were weaned at 41 days postpartum (23.6%). Ewes that lambed during the early part of the winter lambing period had an advantage over later lambing ewes in the percentage which subsequently lambed the following summer. This was apparently the result of a difference in length of breeding exposure rather than a higher fertility rate during the early part of the breeding period. When summer lambing ewes were rebred during the early part of the summer breeding period (late summer to early fall), stress associated with lactation did not affect subsequent winter lambing performance. Summer lambing ewes belonging to a late weaning (80 days) treatment group did not differ (P>0.05) from those belonging to an early weaning (31 days) treatment group in winter fertility, prolificacy, day-of-year lambing or lambing interval.  相似文献

The number of Border Leicester ewes ovulating and their ovulation rate at 4 to 6 week intervals over 1 year and again after a further year were determined. The proportion of these ewes expressing estrus from autumn to spring and then in late summer/autumn was also determined. None of the ewes ovulated from October to early February, but for the remainder of the year, ovulation rate was always above 1.60, peaking in April to June at over 2.0. Eighty-four percent of the ewes had commenced ovulating by early March. The breeding season continued to September, when 10% of the ewes ovulated, with 25% expressing estrus in August and September. There was no significant effect of age, ewe liveweight or liveweight change on the proportion of ewes ovulating and their ovulation rate. The variability in the length of the breeding season gives scope for further selection.  相似文献

Hormonal profiles during the estrous cycle of Finn, Suffolk and Targhee ewes were compared in six ewes of each breed. Blood samples were drawn by venipuncture at 8-h intervals from onset to onset of consecutive estrous periods. Number of corpora lutea (CL) and ovarian follicles >/=3 mm in diameter on Day 10 (estrus = Day 0) were observed using endoscopy. Estrous cycle length was 14.9, 15.6 and 16.4 d (P<0.01) in Finn, Suffolk and Targhee ewes, respectively. Finns had more (P<0.001) CL (3.5) than Suffolks (2.0) and Targhees (1.8), but luteal phase progesterone concentrations were similar among breeds in peak level and area under the curve. In Finn ewes, the amplitude of the preovulatory LH surge was lower (P<0.01) and tended to occur later in estrus; otherwise LH levels and patterns were similar among breeds. A coincident follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) preovulatory surge occurred in most ewes, the amplitude of which was related to that of luteinizing hormone (LH); r = 0.67, P<0.01. Plasma FSH levels and patterns were similar in Finn, Suffolk and Targhee ewes and most ewes had three to four secretory episodes. Follicles >/=3 mm averaged 1.8, 1.0 and 1.2 (P>0.1) in Finn, Suffolk and Targhee ewes, respectively. Results indicate that the higher ovulation rate of the Finn ewe is not elicited by increased FSH levels at any stage of the estrous cycle.  相似文献

The effects of high ambient temperatures on rectal temperature (RT), respiration rate (RR), fetal development and serum thyroxine (T(4)) concentrations were stuaied in two experiments involving 35 ewes and 26 lambs from the following ewe groups: 1) Barbados Blackbelly (B), a tropical breed; 2) Dorset (D), a temperate breed; and 3) Blackbelly x Dorset crosses (BxD). Data were obtained on four B, five D and five BxD ewes exhibiting estrus during the summer (Exp. 1). In Exp. 2, eight B, seven D and six BxD ewes were maintained in two environmental chambers (cool, 22.2C; hot, 33.8C) from day 125 of gestation to seven days before the expected lambing date for each breed group (D and BxD, 140+/-1; B, 144+/-1 day of gestation). The B and BxD ewes were more heat-tolerant than D ewes as measured by significantly lower RT and RR in each experiment. Mean lamb birth weight, crown-rump length, number of functional uterine caruncles and caruncle weight and size did not vary significantly among breed groups or temperature chamber (Exp. 2), and there was no indication that the high temperature imposed caused fetal dwarfing in lambs removed from the uterus at a standard age of seven days before expected parturition. Serum T(4) varied markedly among breed groups (P<0.05) in each experiment with B ewes having the lowest and BxD ewes the highest concentration. In Exp. 1, follicular stage T(4) concentrations in B and BxD ewes were lower (P<0.02) than those during the luteal stage of the estrous cycle. The decrease in D ewes was not significant. High ambient temperature (Exp. 2) depressed T(4) levels in D ewes (P<0.05) and also depressed the pituitary-thyroid response to thyrotropin releasing hormone in D lambs. Such was not the case in B and BxD ewes and their lambs.  相似文献

Photoperiod may regulate seasonal reproduction either by providing the primary driving force for the reproductive transitions or by synchronizing an endogenous reproductive rhythm. This study evaluated whether breed differences in timing of the reproductive seasons of Finnish Landrace (Finn) and Galway ewes are due to differences in photoperiodic drive of the reproductive transitions or to differences in photoperiodic synchronization of the endogenous rhythm of reproductive activity. The importance of decreasing photoperiod after the summer solstice in determining the onset and duration of the breeding season was tested by housing ewes from the summer solstice in either a simulated natural photoperiod or a fixed summer-solstice photoperiod (18 h light:6 h dark; summer-solstice hold). Onset of the breeding season within each breed did not differ between these photoperiodic treatments, but Galway ewes began and ended their breeding season earlier than Finn ewes. The duration of the breeding season was shorter in Galway ewes on summer-solstice hold than on simulated natural photoperiod; duration did not differ between photoperiodic treatments in Finn ewes. The requirement for increasing photoperiod after the winter solstice for initiation of anoestrus was tested by exposing ewes from the winter solstice to either a simulated natural photoperiod or a winter-solstice hold photoperiod (8.5 h light:15.5 h dark). Onset of anoestrus within each breed did not differ between these photoperiodic treatments, but the time of this transition differed between breeds. These observations suggest that genetic differences in timing of the breeding season in Galway and Finn ewes do not reflect differences in the extent to which photoperiod drives the reproductive transitions, because neither breed requires shortening days to enter the breeding season or lengthening days to end it at appropriate times. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that photoperiod synchronizes an endogenous rhythm of reproductive activity in both breeds and that genetic differences in timing of the breeding season reflect differences in photoperiodic synchronization of this rhythm.  相似文献

The influence of (1) lactation and (2) three different hormone treatments were measured in fall lambing ewes. By day 67 postpartum, considering lactation effect, 89% of nonlactating and 33 % of lactating ewes showed estrous behavior (P<0.05). Nonlactating control ewes ovulated significantly sooner postpartum than ewes in other treatment groups. Both nonlactating and lactating ewes ovulated prior to demonstrating estrus. In the hormone treatments those containing estrogen tended to have earlier estrus which is assumed to reflect a direct effect. Uterine involution in all animals was generally complete by day 24. No apparent treatment differences in uterine epithelial cells, gland number and size, edema, or interstitial hemorrhage were noted during the 67-day postpartum period studied. Data from this study indicate that the reproductive tract appears acceptable for rebreeding several weeks before the ewes show behavioral estrus.  相似文献

A study was undertaken to compare the longevity and lifetime lamb output of purebred Scottish Blackface (BF) ewes with a range of crossbred genotypes from Scottish BF dams. For up to five successive breeding seasons, 1143 Scottish BF, Swaledale × BF (SW × BF), North Country Cheviot × BF (CH × BF), Lleyn × BF (LL × BF) and Texel × BF (T × BF) ewes were mated to a range of sire breeds on six hill farms across Northern Ireland. Dentition and lamb output were recorded annually until completion of the study or until the ewe was removed due to death or culling. Timing of mortality and the main reason for culling were also recorded. When survival analysis was undertaken, SW × BF and CH × BF ewes had better longevity (P < 0.05) than BF ewes due to their lower culling rate (P < 0.01) and lower mortality rate (P = 0.06), respectively. The relative proportion of LL × BF and T × BF culled due to infertility was lower (P < 0.05) than SW × BF and CH × BF, while a higher (P < 0.05) proportion of LL × BF and T × BF ewes were culled for prolapses compared with the other breed crosses. SW × BF ewes had consistently higher bite scores (P < 0.001) compared with BF, LL × BF and T × BF, indicating a greater prevalence and degree of overshoot. In ewes aged 5.5 years old, SW × BF also had a higher incidence of tooth loss (P < 0.01) compared with the other breeds. However, the proportion of SW × BF culled due to poor teeth condition was lower (P < 0.05) than BF. Across all breeds, the chances of surviving to their next mating were influenced by ewe breed (P < 0.05), age at mating (P < 0.001), body condition score at weaning (P < 0.001), number of missing teeth (P < 0.001) and average daily live weight gain per litter (P < 0.05). The cumulative number and weight of lambs weaned per ewe over five successive matings was higher (P < 0.05) for crossbred compared with pure BF ewes; however there were no differences in lifetime output between the different crossbred ewes studied. This study demonstrates that the higher lamb output of crossbred hill ewes does not compromise their longevity compared with pure Blackface, resulting in greater total lifetime production. When the crossbred ewes are sired by a second hill breed, longevity may be improved.  相似文献

Ten ewes of each of two breeds, Dorset Horn (long breeding season) and Welsh Mountain (short breeding season), were given subcutaneous oestradiol-17 beta implants and then ovariectomized. Another 10 ewes of each breed were left intact. On 3 May 1982, all the ewes were housed in an artificial photoperiod of 16L:8D. After 4 weeks, half of the ewes of each breed and physiological state were abruptly exposed to a short-day (8L:16D) photoperiod while the others remained in long days (16L:8D). The time of onset of the breeding season was significantly (P less than 0.05) advanced in ewes switched to short days (12 August +/- 10 days) compared to those maintained in long days (4 September +/- 14 days). Dorset Horn ewes began to cycle (20 July +/- 7 days) significantly (P less than 0.001) earlier than Welsh Mountain ewes (19 September +/- 6 days). Disparities in the time of onset of cyclic activity in ewes of different breeds and daylength groups were echoed in disparities in the time at which plasma LH and FSH concentrations rose in oestrogen-implanted, ovariectomized ewes of the same light treatment group. Prolactin concentrations showed an immediate decrease in ewes switched to short days, but remained elevated in long-day ewes. Since the breeding season started in the presence of high prolactin concentrations in long-day ewes, it seems unlikely that prolactin is an important factor determining the timing of the onset of cyclic activity.  相似文献

The objective of our study was to determine the effect of chronic utero-ovarian vein catheterization in ewes on estrous cycle length, plasma progesterone (P) concentration, and myometrial electromyographic activity. Cyclic ewes with inferior vena cava catheters were used as controls. Estrus was synchronized in ten ewes and 10 to 12 d following estrus, the ewes were anesthetized, fitted with myometrial electromyograph leads and with utero-ovarian vein (n = 5) or inferior vena cava (n = 5) catheters. After surgery, ewes returned to estrus as expected (16 to 18 d interestrus interval). The second cycle of four of five ewes with utero-ovarian vein catheters were prolonged (40 to 58 d). The inferior vena cava catheterized ewes had normal length second cycles. Plasma P concentrations reflected the estrous cycles: low ( 0.05).  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to assess the relationship between electrical resistance of the vaginal mucosa and serum concentrations of estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) during the estrous cycle in ewes. Vaginal impedance was recorded daily using a 2-electrode impedometer in 10 nonprolific Western white-faced and 7 prolific Finn ewes, during the mid-breeding season (October to December). Transrectal ultrasonography of ovaries was performed once a day to confirm ovulation and monitor follicle growth (follicles > or =3 mm in diameter) and development of corpora lutea (CL). Jugular blood samples were collected daily for radioimmunoassay (RIA) of estradiol and progesterone. In all ewes, a decline in vaginal impedance (to <40 ohms) was closely associated with the onset of behavioral estrus. In both breeds of sheep, there was no significant correlation between daily serum concentrations of estradiol and vaginal impedance throughout the estrous cycle. Daily serum concentrations of progesterone and the E2:P4 ratio were correlated with vaginal impedance during the period of luteolysis and follicular phase in both breeds (Western white-faced ewes: r = 0.62, P = 0.0002 and r = -0.56, P = 0.0002; Finn ewes: r = 0.61, P = 0.001 and r = -0.45, P = 0.03, respectively) and early in the cycle (Days 0 to 2, Day 0 = day of ovulation) in white-faced ewes (r = 0.61, P = 0.0003 and r = -0.36, P = 0.052, respectively) but not during the remaining portion of the luteal phase in either breed. In conclusion, vaginal mucous impedance appears to be primarily controlled by progesterone, but it also changes in response to shifts in the E2:P4 ratio when progesterone concentrations are low. Impedometric characteristics of the vaginal mucosa in cyclic ewes are an indicator of serum concentrations of progesterone and E2:P4 ratios during the terminal stage of the estrous cycle.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to compare estrous response to three doses (8, 16 and 24 mg) of prostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGF(2alpha)) administered by intramuscular injection to ewes between day 6 and 12 of the estrous cycle (Experiment I) and to ewes on unknown days of the estrous cycle during four different stages of the breeding season (Experiment II). In experiment I, a total of 41 ewes were treated with PGF(2alpha). The injection of 24 mg PGF(2alpha) resulted in a higher proportion of ewes exhibiting estrus (13 14 , 92.9%) within 5 days after treatment as compared to the other two doses (2 12 and 10 15 , for 8 and 16 mg PGF(2alpha), respectively). However, there was no significant difference for the proportion between 16 mg and 24 mg PGF(2alpha). In experiment II, PGF(2alpha) was given to ewes on the 3rd of February (early breeding season), the 28th of February (mid-early breeding season), the 10th of April (mid breeding season) and the 27th of May (late breeding season). These was a significant difference for the proportion of ewes exhibiting estrus between the early breeding season and the other three seasons (P < 0.05) but not for ewes ovulating. Throughout the breeding season, 16 mg PGF(2alpha) appeared to be slightly better than the other two doses (8 and 24 mg) although there was no overall difference in the estrous responses to treatment among the three doses. However, a significant difference in the proportion of ewes ovulating was found among the three doses of PGF(2alpha) (P < 0.05). Especially, 16 mg PGF(2alpha) was significantly superior to 8 mg (P < 0.01) and 24 mg (P < 0.05). It was considered that there was a complicated relationship between the doses of PGF(2alpha) and the stages of the breeding season for induction of estrus and ovulation in the ewe.  相似文献

Estrous response, pregnancy rate, and the relationship between palpable corpora lutea (CL) and plasma progesterone concentrations were studied during the spring (n = 149) and fall (n = 146) breeding seasons using postpartum, crossbred beef cows consisting of 0-Brahman, 1 4 - Brahman , or 1 2 Brahman breeding. At the start of each breeding season, a jugular blood sample was collected for progesterone analysis; each cow was palpated for the presence of a CL and randomly alloted within breed to a non-treated control or Synchro-Mate-B (SMB) treatment. Fewer (P<0.01) fall than spring bred cows exhibited estrus within the first 21 d of breeding. Within 48 h of implant removal, 84 and 64% (spring and fall, respectively) of synchronized cows exhibited estrus. In both seasons, more SMB than control cows became pregnant by 7 d of breeding. Percentage of Brahman breeding did not influence estrous response or pregnancy rate. On the basis of 292 evaluations, palpation per rectum correctly assessed ovarian status 74% of the time. These data indicate that although season can influence response. SMB can be used effectively to synchronize Brahman crossbred cows. In addition, it was found that there is a close relationship between palpation per rectum and plasma concentrations of progesterone.  相似文献
