Leaves of 26 grass, herb, shrub and tree species were collected from mesotrophic grasslands to assess natural variability in bulk, fatty acid and monosaccharide δ13C values under different grazing management (cattle- or deer-grazed) on three sample dates (May, July and October) such that interspecific and spatiotemporal variations in whole leaf tissues and compound-specific δ13C values could be determined. The total mean leaf bulk δ13C value for plants was −28.9‰ with a range of values spanning 7.5‰. Significant interspecific variation between bulk leaf δ13C values was only determined in October (P = <0.001) when δ13C values of the leaf tissues from both sites was on average 1.5‰ depleted compared to during July and May. Samples from May were significantly different between fields (P = 0.03) indicating an effect from deer- or cattle-grazing in young leaves. The average individual monosaccharide δ13C value was 0.8‰ higher compared with whole leaf tissues. Monosaccharides were the most abundant components of leaf biomass, i.e. arabinose, xylose, mannose, galactose and glucose, and therefore, fluctuations in their individual δ13C values had a major influence on bulk δ13C values. An average depletion of ca. 1‰ in the bulk δ13C values of leaves from the deer-grazed field compared to the cattle-grazed field could be explained by a general depletion of 1.1‰ in glucose δ13C values, as glucose constituted >50% total leaf monosaccharides. In October, δ13C values of all monosaccharides varied between species, with significant variation in δ13C values of mannose and glucose in July, and mannose in May. This provided an explanation for the noted variability in the tissue bulk δ13C values observed in October 1999. The fatty acids C16:0, C18:2 and C18:3 were highly abundant in all plant species. Fatty acid δ13C values were lower than those of bulk leaf tissues; average values of −37.4‰ (C16:0), −37.0‰ (C18:2) and −36.5‰ (C18:3) were determined. There was significant interspecific variation in the δ13C values of all individual fatty acids during October and July, but only for C18:2 in May (P = <0.05). This indicated that seasonal trends observed in the δ13C values of individual fatty acids were inherited from the isotopic composition of primary photosynthate. However, although wide diversity in δ13C values of grassland plants ascribed to grazing management, interspecific and spatiotemporal influences was revealed, significant trends (P = <0.0001) for fatty acid and monosaccharide δ13C values: δ13C16:0 < δ13C18:2 < δ13C18:3 and δ13Carabinose > δ13Cxylose > δ13Cglucose > δ13Cgalactose, respectively, previously described, appear consistent across a wide range of species at different times of the year in fields under different grazing regimes.  相似文献

Stable hydrogen and carbon isotopic compositions of individual n-alkanes were determined for various terrestrial plants (33 samples including 27 species) and aquatic plants (six species) in natural environments from Japan and Thailand. In C3 plants, n-alkanes extracted from angiosperms have a deltaD value of -152+/-26 per thousand (relative to Standard Mean Ocean Water [SMOW]) and delta13C value of -36.1+/-2.7 per thousand (relative to Peedde Belemnite [PDB]), and those from gymnosperms have a deltaD value of -149+/-16 per thousand and delta13C value of -31.6+/-1.7 per thousand. Angiosperms have n-alkanes depleted in 13C relative to gymnosperms. n-Alkanes from C4 plants have a deltaD value of -171+/-12 per thousand and delta13C value of -20.5+/-2.1 per thousand, being a little depleted in D and much enriched in 13C compared to C3 plants. n-Alkanes of CAM plants are a little depleted in D and vary widely in delta13C relative to those of C3 and C4 plants. In aquatic plants, n-alkanes from freshwater plants have a deltaD value of -187+/-16 per thousand and delta13C value of -25.3+/-1.9 per thousand, and those from seaweeds have a deltaD value of -155+/-34 per thousand and delta13C value of -22.8+/-1.0 per thousand. All n-alkanes from various plant classes are more depleted in D and 13C relative to environmental water and bulk tissue, respectively. In addition, the hydrogen and carbon isotopic fractionations during n-alkane synthesis are distinctive for these various plant classes. While C3 plants have smaller isotopic fractionations in both D and 13C, seaweed has larger isotopic fractionations.  相似文献

Compound-specific hydrogen and carbon isotopic compositions in n-alkanoic acids, phytol and sterols were determined for various plant classes (terrestrial C3-angiosperm; C3-gymnosperm; C4; crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM); and aquatic C3 plants) in order to investigate isotopic fractionations among various plant classes. In all plants, lipid biomolecules are depleted in both D (up to 324 per thousand ) and 13C (up to 14.7 per thousand ) relative to ambient water and bulk tissue, respectively. In addition, the magnitude of D- and 13C-depletion of lipid biomolecules is distinctive depending on plant classes. For example, C3 angiosperm n-alkanoic acids are less depleted in D (95+/-23 per thousand ) and 13C (4.3 +/- 2.5 per thousand ) relative to ambient water and bulk tissue, respectively, while C4 plant n-alkanoic acids are more depleted in D (119 +/- 15 per thousand ) and 13C (10.2 +/- 2.0 per thousand ). On the other hand, C3 angiosperm phytol and sterols are much more depleted in D (306 +/-12 per thousand for phytol, 211+/-15 per thousand for sterol) with less depletion in 13C (4.1 +/- 1.1 per thousand for phytol, 1.3 +/- 0.9 per thousand for sterol) relative to ambient water and bulk tissue, respectively, while C4 plant phytol and sterols are less depleted in D (254 +/- 7 per thousand for phytol, 186 +/- 13 per thousand for sterols) with much more depletion in 13C (9.0 +/- 1.2 per thousand for phytol, 5.0 +/- 1.1 per thousand for sterols). Among various plant classes, there is a positive correlation between the D- and 13C-depletion for n-alkanoic acids, while a negative correlation was found for phytol and sterols from the same plants.  相似文献

Beech seedlings from 11 German climatic provenances were exposed to a realistically timed drought treatment in a greenhouse experiment. The stable isotope composition of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) was analysed in pooled bulk material of roots, stems and leaves, as well as in the aqueous extracts and starch fractions. The delta 13C values increased in bulk samples (BS) of roots, stems and leaves by drought, although no leaf growth occurred during the experimental period. A clear drought effect on delta 13C in aqueous extracts was detected in leaves. In aqueous extracts of stems and roots as well as in starch fractions of all organs, abundance of delta 13C also tended to be increased by drought, but this effect was not statistically significant. For both delta 13C and delta 15N, enrichment was observed from the site of uptake/ source to the site of use/sink. A gradient for delta 13C in all fractions from leaves (-29.49, -28.89 and -27.85 per thousand) to stems (-28.81, -27.48 and -26.98 per thousand) and to roots (-27.60, -26.37 and -26.48 per thousand) was detected in BS, aqueous extracts and starch, respectively. An opposite gradient for delta 15N was found in BS: 1.59 per thousand, 1.84 per thousand and 3.05 per thousand in roots, stems and leaves, respectively. delta 15N was neither affected by drought in the BS nor in aqueous extracts, but an effect of provenance was observed. Particularly in roots and stems, drought-sensitive provenances showed the strongest shifts in delta 13C induced by drought and the lowest delta 15N values. In the present experiment, delta 13C values were more affected by the environmental factor drought, while delta 15N values were more affected by the genetic factor provenance.  相似文献

We determined hydrogen, carbon and nitrogen isotopic compositions of chlorophylls a and b isolated from leaves of five C3 higher plant species (Benthamidia japonica, Prunus japonica, Acer carpinifolium, Acer argutum and Querus mongloica), and hydrogen and carbon isotopic compositions of phytol and chlorophyllides in the chlorophylls to understand isotopic fractionations associated with chlorophyll biosynthesis in these species. Chlorophylls are depleted in D relative to ambient water by approximately 189 per thousand and enriched in (13)C relative to bulk tissue by approximately 1.6 per thousand. These data can be explained by the contribution of isotopic fractionations during phytol and chlorophyllide biosyntheses. Phytol is more depleted in both D (by approximately 308 per thousand) and (13)C (by approximately 4.3 per thousand), while chlorophyllides are less depleted in D (by approximately 44 per thousand) and enriched in (13)C (by approximately 4.8 per thousand). Such inhomogeneous distribution of isotopes in chlorophylls suggests that (1) the phytol in chlorophylls reflects strong D- and (13)C-depletions due to the isotopic fractionations during the methylerythritol phosphate pathway followed by hydrogenation, and (2) the chlorophyllides reflect D- and (13)C-enrichments in tricarboxylic acid cycle. On the other hand, chlorophylls are slightly ( approximately 1.2 per thousand) depleted in (15)N relative to the bulk tissue, indicating that net isotopic fractionation of nitrogen during chlorophyll biosynthesis is small compared with those of hydrogen and carbon.  相似文献

Variation in the C18OO content of atmospheric CO2 (delta18Oa) can be used to distinguish photosynthesis from soil respiration, which is based on carbonic anhydrase (CA)-catalyzed 18O exchange between CO2 and 18O-enriched leaf water (delta18Ow). Here we tested the hypothesis that mean leaf delta18Ow and assimilation rates can be used to estimate whole-leaf C18OO flux (isoflux), ignoring intraleaf variations in CA activity and gas exchange parameters. We observed variations in CA activity along the leaf (> 30% decline from the leaf center toward the leaf ends), which were only partially correlated to those in delta18Ow (7 to 21 per thousand), delta18O and delta13C of leaf organic matter (25 to 30 per thousand and -12.8 to -13.2 per thousand, respectively), and substomatal CO2 concentrations (intercellular CO2 concentrations, c(i), at the leaf center were approximately 40% of those at the leaf tip). The combined effect of these variations produced a leaf-integrated isoflux that was different from that predicted based on bulk leaf values. However, because of canceling effects among the influencing parameters, isoflux overestimations were only approximately 10%. Conversely, use of measured parameters from a leaf segment could produce large errors in predicting leaf-integrated C18OO fluxes.  相似文献

Leaf carbon isotope discrimination (delta13C) was widely considered to directly reflect the rainfall environment in which the leaf developed, but recent observations have queried this. The relationship between delta13C and rainfall was explored in Eucalyptus species growing along a rainfall gradient in Australia. The leaves of 43 species of Eucalyptus and the closely related Corymbia species produced in 2003 were sampled in September 2004 at 50 sites and grouped into 15 locations along a rainfall gradient in southwest Western Australia. At 24 sites, the same species and same trees were sampled as in a study in September 2003 when leaves produced in 2002 were sampled. The rainfall in 2004 was on average 190 mm (range 135-270 mm) higher at all locations than in 2003. In the leaves sampled in 2004, the mean carbon isotope discrimination (delta13C) across the 15 locations decreased 2.9 per thousand per 1000 mm of rainfall, the specific leaf area (SLA) increased by 2.9 m2 kg(-1) per 1000 mm of rainfall and the nitrogen (N) content decreased by 1.56 g m(-2) per 1000 mm of rainfall. In contrast, a comparison between the leaves produced in the drier 2002 year compared with the wetter 2003 year showed that there was a strong correlation (r2= 0.85) between the SLA values between years and a trend for higher values with increasing SLA, but the values of delta(13)C were on average only 0.38 per thousand lower (more negative) at all locations in the wetter year, equivalent to a decrease of 2.0 per thousand per 1000 mm of rainfall. The results suggest that while there may be constitutive differences in leaf morphology, SLA and N content per unit area, increasing rainfall or cloudiness associated with higher rainfall increases SLA and decreases N content per unit area. We conclude that rainfall does not directly influence delta13C, but induces leaf morphological and physiological changes that affect the resultant delta13C.  相似文献

The carbon isotope composition (delta(13)C) of CO(2) produced in darkness by intact French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) leaves was investigated for different leaf temperatures and during dark periods of increasing length. The delta(13)C of CO(2) linearly decreased when temperature increased, from -19 per thousand at 10 degrees C to -24 per thousand at 35 degrees C. It also progressively decreased from -21 per thousand to -30 per thousand when leaves were maintained in continuous darkness for several days. Under normal conditions (temperature not exceeding 30 degrees C and normal dark period), the evolved CO(2) was enriched in (13)C compared with carbohydrates, the most (13)C-enriched metabolites. However, at the end of a long dark period (carbohydrate starvation), CO(2) was depleted in (13)C even when compared with the composition of total organic matter. In the two types of experiment, the variations of delta(13)C were linearly related to those of the respiratory quotient. This strongly suggests that the variation of delta(13)C is the direct consequence of a substrate switch that may occur to feed respiration; carbohydrate oxidation producing (13)C-enriched CO(2) and beta-oxidation of fatty acids producing (13)C-depleted CO(2) when compared with total organic matter (-27.5 per thousand). These results are consistent with the assumption that the delta(13)C of dark respired CO(2) is determined by the relative contributions of the two major decarboxylation processes that occur in darkness: pyruvate dehydrogenase activity and the Krebs cycle.

The litters, bulk soils, and soil particle-size fractions were sampled from three typical natural forests, i.e., broadleaf Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) mixed forest (PB, altitude 740 m), spruce-fir (Picea asperata-Abies nephrolepis) forest (SF, altitude 1350 m), and Erman's birch (Betula ermanii) forest (EB, altitude 1996 m), on the northern slope of Changbai Mountains to analyze their organic matter delta13C values, and the intact soil cores (20 cm depth) from EB (high altitude) were relocated to PB and SF (low altitudes) for a year to study the responses of the delta13C values to simulated warming. It was shown that the litters had a significantly lower delta13C value than the soils, and the delta13C values of the litters and soils increased downward through the litter- and soil layers in all the three typical forest types. Soil particle-size fractions had an increased delta13C value with decreasing particle size fractions. The delta13C value of the litters was in the order of SF (-28.3 per thousand) >PB (-29.0 per thousand) >EB (-29.6 per thousand), while that of the soils was in the order of EB (-25.5 per thousand) >PB (-25.8 per thousand) >SF (-26.2 per thousand). Over one-year soil warming (an increment of 0.7 degrees C - 2.9 degrees C) , the delta13C values of the bulk soils and soil particle-size fractions all presented a decreasing trend, and the decrement of the delta13C value was larger in <2 microm (0.48 per thousand) and 2-63 microm fractions (0.47 per thousand) than in >63 microm fraction (0.33 per thousand). The results suggested that climate warming could have great effects on the older organic carbon associated with fine soil particle-size fractions.  相似文献

Summary Foliar 13C-abundance (13C) was analyzed in the dominant trees of a temperate deciduous forest in east Tennessee (Walker Branch Watershed) to investigate the variation in foliar 13C as a function of time (within-year and between years), space (canopy height, watershed topography and habitat) and species (deciduous and coniferous taxa). Various hypotheses were tested by analyzing (i) samples collected from the field during the growing season and (ii) foliar tissues maintained in an archived collection. The 13C-value for leaves from the tops of trees was 2 to 3%. more positive than for leaves sampled at lower heights in the canopy. Quercus prinus leaves sampled just prior to autumn leaf fall had significantly more negative 13C-values than those sampled during midsummer. On the more xeric ridges, needles of Pinus spp. had more positive 13C-values than leaves from deciduous species. Foliar 13C-values differed significantly as a function of topography. Deciduous leaves from xeric sites (ridges and slopes) had more positive 13C-values than those from mesic (riparian and cove) environments. On the more xeric sites, foliar 13C was significantly more positive in 1988 (a dry year) relative to that in 1989 (a year with above-normal precipitation). In contrast, leaf 13C in trees from mesic valley bottoms did not differ significantly among years with disparate precipitation. Patterns in foliar 13C indicated a higher ratio of net CO2 assimilation to transpiration (A/E) for trees in more xeric versus mesic habitats, and for trees in xeric habitats during years of drought versus years of normal precipitation. However, A/E (units of mmol CO2 fixed/mol H2O transpired) calculated on the basis of 13C-values for leaves from the more xeric sites was higher in a wet year (6.6±1.2) versus a dry year (3.4±0.4). This difference was attributed to higher transpiration (and therefore lower A/E) in the year with lower relative humidity and higher average daily temperature. The calculated A/E values for the forest in 1988–89, based on 13C, were within ±55% of estimates made over a 17 day period at this site in 1984 using micrometeorological methods.  相似文献

Rhizodeposition, i.e. the release of carbon into the soil by growing roots, is an important part of the terrestrial carbon cycle. However thein situ nature and dynamics of root-derived carbon in the soil are still poorly understood. Here we made an investigation of the latter in laboratory experiments using13CO2 pulse chase labelling of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). We analyzed the kinetics of13C-labelled carbon and more specially13C carbohydrates in the rhizosphere. Wheat seedlings-soil mesocosms were exposed to13CO2 for 5 hours in controlled chambers and sampled repeatedly during two weeks for13C/C analysis of organic carbon. After a two-step separation of the soil from the roots, the amount of total organic13C was determined by isotope ratio mass spectrometry as well as the amounts of13C in arabinose, fructose, fucose, glucose, galactose, mannose, rhamnose and xylose. The amount and isotopic ratio of monosaccharides were obtained by capillary gas chromatography coupled with isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC/C/IRMS) after trimethyl-silyl derivatization. Two fractions were analyzed : total (hydrolysable) and soluble monomeric (water extractable) soil sugars. The amount of organic13C found in the soil, expressed as a percentage of the total photosynthetically fixed13C at the end of the labelling period, reached 16% in the day following labelling and stabilised at 9% after one week. We concluded that glucose under the form of polymers was the dominant moietie of rhizodeposits. Soluble glucose and fructose were also present. But after 2 days, these soluble sugars had disappeared. Forty percent of the root-derived carbon was in the form of neutral sugars, and exhibited a time-increasing signature of microbial sugars. The composition of rhizospheric sugars rapidly tended towards that of bulk soil organic matter.  相似文献

Summary The variability of 13C values was measured in leaf, stem and root tissues of several tree species growing in closed natural and plantation forests in the Luquillo mountains of Puerto Rico. Results confirm a significant decrease of 13C values from the tree canopy to the forest floor. The values measured in understory plants growing in gaps were not significantly different from the average for plants growing under the forest shade. Seedling leaf values tended to be more positive than those of saplings, probably reflecting the contribution of organic matter from the mother tree. Photosynthetic independence on the forest floor results in a reduction in °13C value. Stem and root tissue values of seedlings and saplings were less negative than those of the leaves of the same plants. It is suggested that this difference results from the slower change in isotopic composition experienced by the woody tissue, as the seedlings become photosynthetically independent in the forest floor.  相似文献

Summary The occurrence of Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM), as judged from 13C values, was investigated in epiphytes and some related plant species at a series of sites covering the approximate altitudinal range of epiphytes in Papua New Guinea. Comprehensive collections were made at each site and the occurrence of water storage tissue and blade thickness was also determined. Some 26% of epiphytic orchids from a lowland rainforest (2–300 m.a.s.l) showed 13C values typical of obligate CAM and possessed leaves thicker than 1 mm. A second group of orchids, mostly with succulent leaves, possessed intermediate 13C values between -23 and -26% and accounted for 25% of the total species number. Some species of this group may exhibit weak CAM or be facultative CAM plants. The remainder of the lowland rainforest species appeared to be C3 plants with 13C values between -28 and -35%. and generally possessed thin leaves. Obligate CAM species of orchids from a lower montane rainforest (1175 m.a.s.l) comprised 26% of the species total and mostly possessed thick leaves. The remainder of the species were generally thin-leaved with 13C values between -26 and -35%. largely indicative of C3 photosynthesis. Orchids with intermediate 13C values were not found in the lower montane rainforest. Obligate CAM appeared to be lacking in highland epiphytes from an upper montane rainforest and subalpine rainforest (2600–3600 m.a.s.l). However the fern, Microsorium cromwellii had a 13C value of -21.28%. suggesting some measure of CAM activity. Other highland ferns and orchids showed more negative °13C values, up to-33%., typical of C3 photosynthesis. The highland epiphytic orchids possessed a greater mean leaf thickness than their lowland C3 counterparts due to the frequent occurrence of water storage tissue located on the adaxial side of the leaf. It is suggested that low daytime temperatures in the highland microhabitats is a major factor in explaining the absence of CAM. The increased frequency of water storage tissue in highland epiphytes may be an adaptation to periodic water stress events in the dry season and/or an adaptation to increased levels of UV light in the tropicalpine environment.  相似文献

Contributions of C3 and C4 plants to respiration of C3-C4 ecosystems can be estimated on the basis of their contrasting 13C discrimination. But accurate partitioning requires accurate measurements of the isotope signature of whole system respiratory CO2 (deltaR), and of its members (delta3 and delta4). Unfortunately, experimental determination of representative delta3 and delta4 values is virtually impossible in nature, generating a need for proxies (surrogates) of delta3 and delta4 values (e.g., the delta of leaf biomass). However, recent evidence indicates that there may be systematic differences among the delta of respiratory and biomass components. Thus, partitioning may be biased depending on the proxy. We tested a wide range of biomass- and respiration-based delta proxies for the partitioning of respiration of mixed Lolium perenne (C3) - Paspalum dilatatum (C4) stands growing at two temperatures inside large 13CO2/ 12CO2 gas exchange chambers. Proxy-based partitioning was compared with results of reference methods, including (i) the delta of whole plant respiratory CO2 (delta3 and delta4) or (ii) respiration rate of intact C3 and C4 plants. Results of the reference methods agreed near perfectly. Conversely, some proxies yielded erroneous partitioning results. Partitioning based on either the delta of shoot or root respiratory CO2 produced the worst bias, because shoot respiratory CO2 was enriched in 13C by several per thousand and root respiratory CO2 was depleted by several per thousand relative to whole plant respiratory CO2. Use of whole plant or whole shoot biomass delta gave satisfactory partitioning results under the constant conditions of the experiments, but their use in natural settings is cautioned if environmental conditions are variable and the time scales of respiration partitioning differ strongly from the residence time of C in biomass. Other biomass-based proxies with faster turnover (e.g., leaf growth zones) may be more useful in changing conditions.

Summary The chemical and spectroscopic data presented herein show that about 50% of the weight of the termite fungus comb consists of carbohydrates (⊂40%) and proteinaceous materials (⊂10%). Of the remaining material about 30% appears to be aliphatic in nature (long-chain and branched alkanoic acids) and 20% aromatic and phenolic. The data on monosaccharide composition indicate that the fungus comb material, rich in glucose, arabinose and xylose, is predominantly of plant origin.  相似文献

Summary Sun leaves of Metrosideros polymorpha were collected in 51 sites on 9 lava flows that represented gradients of elevation, precipitation, substrate age, and substrate texture on Mauna Loa volcano, Hawai'i. Leaf mass per unit leaf area increased with increasing elevation on all flows, while foliar nitrogen concentration decreased with increasing elevation and increased with increasing substrate age. Foliar 13C became less negative with increasing elevation on the wet east-side lava flows, but not the dry northwest-side flows; it did not reflect patterns of precipitation or presumed water availability. 13C was very strongly correlated with leaf mass per area across all of the sites. Limited gas-exchange information suggested that calculated ci/ca did not decrease with elevation in association with less-negative 13C, and photosynthesis per unit of nitrogen was significantly reduced in high-elevation plants. These results are consistent with a substantial internal resistance to CO2 diffusion in the thick Metrosideros polymorpha leaves in high elevation sites.Published as a contribution to the International Union for Biological Sciences Tropical Mountain Ecosystems Program, and as Carnegie Institution of Washington Department of Plant Biology Publication Number 1065  相似文献

Purified mucilages extracted from several plant parts of Actinidia chinensis and from the leaves of nine Actinidia species, were shown to be acidic polysaccharides, containing galactose, arabinose, mannose and glucuronic acid. Fucose and xylose were also present in the mucilages from A. chinensis and in the leaf mucilage of four other species. Partial hydrolysis studies suggested that all the mucilages may belong to the glucuronomannan family of polysaccharides, with a repeating disaccharide core of glucuronosylmannose. Division of the Actinidia genus into subgenera may be possible on the basis of properties and monosaccharide compositions of the mucilages.  相似文献

Carbon ((13)C/(12)C) and nitrogen ((15)N/(14)N) stable isotope ratios were longitudinally measured in fingernail and hair samples from mother-infant pairs where infants were exclusively breastfed (n = 5), breast- and formula-fed (n = 2), or exclusively formula-fed (n = 1) from birth. All exclusively breastfed infants had a dual enrichment in carbon ( approximately 1 per thousand) and nitrogen ( approximately 2-3 per thousand) when compared to maternal values. In contrast, breast- and formula-fed subjects had reduced enrichments compared to exclusively breastfed subjects, and the exclusively formula-fed infant showed no increase in delta(13)C or delta(15)N values. This finding of a carbon trophic level effect in breastfeeding infants suggests that (13)C-enrichments of approximately 1 per thousand in archaeological populations are not necessarily the result of the consumption of C(4)-based weaning foods such as maize or millet. During the weaning process, the delta(13)C results for breastfed infants declined to maternal levels more rapidly than the delta(15)N results. This suggests that delta(13)C values have the potential to track the introduction of solid foods into the diet, whereas delta(15)N values monitor the length of time of breast milk consumption. These findings can be used to refine the isotopic analysis of breastfeeding and weaning patterns in past and modern populations.  相似文献
