The American kestrel (Falco sparverius) — Trichinella pseudospiralis host-parasite association was used as a laboratory model to study the effect of a nematode infection on (1) mate choice of female kestrels and (2) competitive abilities of male kestrels during the breeding season. Females were given the opportunity to choose between infected and uninfected males. There was no significant difference in the proportion of females that chose uninfected (n = 18) over infected (n = 16) males. Eight of 11 competitions between infected and uninfected males exposed to a caged female and a nest box were dominated by uninfected males. Female kestrels seemed to base their choices on the intensity of display effort by the males; the experimental level of infection did not affect male courtship behaviour. Although T. pseudospiralis is known to debilitate American kestrels, parasitized males in mate-choice tests may have diverted energy from less important functions to court the females.  相似文献

Why do females increase parental effort when caring for theoffspring of attractive males? First, attractive males may bepoor fathers so that their females are compelled to increasetheir own contribution in order to fledge some young (the partner-compensationhypothesis). Second, females mated to attractive males may bewilling to increase their parental effort to reap high indirectbenefits for their offspring, and in turn males can decreasetheir own contribution (the differential allocation hypothesis[DAH]). We investigated these hypotheses in the penduline titRemiz pendulinus, a small passerine bird that has sequentialpolygamy by both sexes and strict uniparental care either bythe male or the female. We focused on two sexually selectedmale traits: nest size and nest-building behavior. We show thatmale care is unrelated to nest-building behavior, whereas femalesare more likely to care for the offspring of those males thatspend more time nest building. Females also more likely carefor the offspring of males that build large nests. Consequently,the reproductive success of males increases with nest size andnest-building behavior. Our results are consistent with theDAH and suggest that nest-building behavior and nest size areunder postmating sexual selection in penduline tits.  相似文献

Reversed sexual size dimorphism (RSD, females larger than males) is commonly found in birds of prey. We used kestrels (Falco tinnunculus), breeding in western Finland in a temporally varying environment of 3-year vole cycles, to assess current hypotheses for the evolution and maintenance of RSD. Our 12-year data showed only weak correlations between parental size and breeding parameters (laying date, clutch size and the number of fledglings produced). The degree of RSD per se was unrelated to breeding success, contrary to the prediction of the female dominance hypothesis. Females with small males produced larger clutches in low-vole years, independently of laying date, which supports the small male (or its equivalent inter-sexual selection) hypothesis. Small females tended to have more fledglings, particularly in low-vole years, which is inconsistent with the hypotheses for an advantage of large female size (the starvation, intra-sexual selection, reproductive effort, and supplementary feeding hypotheses). As for males, smaller females may be more efficient hunters, the importance of which should be most pronounced under harsh breeding conditions. Our results suggest that the directional selection on a particular size in kestrels may be under contrasting selection pressures by the environment, and, at least in breeding females, the advantages of large size can actually be counterbalanced during harsh environmental conditions. Costs and benefits of dispersal can vary in space and time, depending on environmental factors and individual state. Plastic, condition‐dependent dispersal strategies, in which individuals rely on external cues such as food abundance to adjust their dispersal distances, are therefore expected to evolve in temporally fluctuating environments. We examined factors affecting breeding dispersal distances in Eurasian kestrels Falco tinnunculus subsisting on multi‐annually and cyclically fluctuating voles as their main food. We attempted to avoid traditional bias in dispersal studies by having large study areas and by taking detection probabilities into account. We observed 320 dispersal events of male and 215 events of female kestrels from our study areas in western Finland during 24 yr. After correcting for distance‐specific detection probability, the estimates of mean dispersal distances increased two‐fold being still clearly higher for females than males. Vole abundance in the spring of settlement was more important in determining average dispersal distances than vole abundance in the previous autumn. At the population level (cross‐sectional model), both males and females dispersed longer distances when the spring abundance of their main food (voles) was low compared to when it was abundant, as predicted by the food depletion hypothesis. At the individual level (longitudinal model), only females responded to the food situation by dispersing more when food abundance was low in the spring of settlement. Females also dispersed longer when vole abundance in the previous autumn had been high. Individual males did not respond to vole abundance, which implies that the population level response in males might have been caused by long‐distance dispersers, which breed in the study area only in good vole years. Our results show that the dispersal distances of kestrels at northern latitudes depend both on individual properties (gender, age, and possibly individual tendency to disperse) and environmental conditions (temporal variation in main food abundance).  相似文献

Compromise of immune function during reproduction may form a link between parental effort and the cost of reproduction, but the role of environmental variation in structuring intra-individual life-history trade-offs has been poorly investigated. We manipulated the need for parental effort in Eurasian kestrels, Falco tinnunculus, by food-supplementing broods for three nestling periods, during which the natural main food supply (voles) varied, and found that parental parasitaemia was inversely related to yearly vole densities. The level of parasitaemia in females was, however, reduced by food supplements. No effect on males was expected, as earlier work has shown that only females responded to the supplements by changing their behaviour. We show directly that the likelihood of female parasitaemia was diminished by spending less time in flight-hunting, which was related to reproduction during a good vole year, to our supplementary feeding, and to being mated to a male with high parental effort. Our results represent a novel direct benefit for females in resource - providing species, linked to female, as well as offspring, well-being, and they provide insight into why the appearance of reproductive costs may be linked to gender or environmental conditions.  相似文献

In northern Sweden breeding males of Tengmalm's owls (Aegolius funereus (L.)) were site tenacious during and between the peaks of the vole (staple food) cycles, but females only during the peaks. Most of these adults shifted nest boxes between successive years. They selected nest boxes randomly in a radius of 3 km. Juveniles, in contrast to site tenacious adults, dispersed outside their natal area. The females moved longer than the males prior to their first breeding. Five adult females were found to be nomadic. One of these nomadic females previously bred site tenaciously as long as food was abundant. Juveniles and adult males were not found to be nomadic. Emigration of adult females and juveniles occurred most frequently when vole populations declined. The breeding population increased sharply and received immigrants suggesting that nomadism may be essential in the population dynamics. Site tenacity and nomadism are discussed in terms of costbenefit to males and females, respectively. Emphasis is on the main functional roles of males (feeding femle and young) and females (incubation).  相似文献

We examined the fitness consequences of helping behavior inthe western bluebird (Sialia mexicana) at Hastings Reservationin Carmel Valley, California, USA, and tested hypotheses forhow helpers benefit from engaging in alloparental behavior.Both juvenile and adult western bluebirds occasionally helpat the nest During a 12 year period, all adult helpers and mostjuvenile helpers were male. Helpers usually fed at nests ofboth their parents and rarely helped when only one parent waspresent. The frequency of pairs with adult helpers was only7%, but nearly one-third of adult males helped among those withboth parents on the study area. At least 28% were breeders whosenests failed. The propensity to help appears to depend uponparental survival, male philopatry, and the breeding successof potential helpers. Feeding rates were not increased at nestswith juvenile helpers, apparendy because breeding males reducedtheir feeding rates. In contrast, adult helpers increased theoverall rates of food delivery to the nest in spite of a reductionin the number of feeding trips made by both male and femaleparents. Helpers did not derive any obvious direct fitness benefitsfrom helping, but they had greater indirect fitness than nonhelpersdue to increases in nestling growth rates and fledging successat their parents' nests. Helpers fledged fewer offspring intheir first nests than did nonhelpers, suggesting that theywere birds with reduced reproductive potential. Although wehave not yet measured the effect of extrapair fertilizationson the fitness benefits of helping, we calculated the differencein fitness between helpers and nonhelpers as a function of thepotential helper's paternity when breeding independently andhis father's paternity in the nest at which he might help. Inconjunction with constraints on breeding and indirect fitnessbenefits, we predict that relatedness of males to the youngin their own as well as their parents' nests will influencehelping behavior in western bluebirds.  相似文献

Replacement male yellow-headed blackbirds (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus)did not destroy broods sired by the previous territorial maleand they showed no aggression toward females with unrelatedbroods. To test whether their tolerance of unrelated young wasmisdirected normal parental care, we removed males from experimentalterritories after primary nests were completed but before secondarynests were initiated. Replacement males fed young that theypresumably had sired in secondary nests and ignored foster youngin primary nests, whereas control males fed young in their primarynests. To identify potential benefits of accepting unrelatedyoung, we analyzed patterns of within-season breeding dispersaland of female settlement on territories following nest lossesto predators. Although some female yellowheads do renest onthe same territory following nest failures, the number of nestsinitiated on territories after a predation event was significantlylower than the number initiated on territories without predationover the same period of time. This implies that late-settlingfemales use the number of active or failed nests and/or thenumber of females on a territory when choosing where to breed.If replacement males that accepted unrelated offspring attractmore new females in the remainder of the current breeding seasonthan infanticidal males, then tolerance of unrelated young byreplacement males may be adaptive in some polygynous birds.  相似文献

Polyandry, i.e. mating with multiple males within one reproductive event, is a common female mating strategy but its adaptive function is often unclear. We tested whether polyandrous females gain genetic benefits by comparing fitness traits of monandrous (mated twice with a single male) and polyandrous (mated twice with two different males) female bank voles Clethrionomys glareolus. We raised the offspring in the laboratory until adulthood and measured their body size, before releasing them to outdoor enclosures to overwinter. At the onset of the breeding season in the following spring, we found that offspring of polyandrous females performed significantly better at reproduction than those of monandrous females. This was mainly due to sons of polyandrous females producing significantly more offspring than those of monandrous females. No significant differences were found for offspring body mass or winter survival between the two treatments. Our results appear to provide evidence that bank vole females gain long-term benefits from polyandry.  相似文献

The basic mating system of the prairie vole, Microtus ochrogaster,consists of monogamous breeding units comprised of one reproductivefemale and male and their offspring. Most surviving young remainat the natal nest; those that do so normally remain non-reproductive.Of 281 total breeding units monitored in free-living populations50.2% were monogamous. Twenty-seven percent consisted of a singlereproductive female that apparently has lost her mate. Theremaining22.8% of the breeding units included two or more unrelated adultsmales and/or females (=‘complex’ breeding units).In general, monogamy was the predominant type of breeding unitat the highest (>100 adults/ha) as well as at low (>20adults/ha) population densities. There was no consistent relationshipbetween the number of residents of a breeding unit and populationdensity. Significantly more young females remaining at the natalnest became reproductive at high rather than at low populationdensities (77.1 and 17.6%, respectively). Monogamy was prevalentduring the winter as well as during the other seasons; however,there were significantly more complex breeding units duringthe winter than during other seasons. Breeding unit size wassignificantly larger during the winter than at other seasons.There was no difference in the proportions of breeding unittypes or the number of residents of a breeding unit during breedingand nonbreeding seasons. Increased breeding unit size appearsrelated to low temperatures and associated physiological stressesduring the winter rather than to population density.  相似文献

This paper examines the composition and turnover of a population of European kestrels Falco tinnunculus L. in the Southern Uplands of Scotland. Turnover was generally high, with most birds staying in the area for only one summer or winter. The rate at which birds arrived or left was highest in autumn and spring, and was independent of population size. During winter, breeding males were more likely to stay on their territories than females, and males that did so were more likely to retain their partners the following year. Breeding success was associated with a greater likelihood of return the following year, except in first-year females which were unlikely to return anyway. The sex ratio was biased toward males in winter, especially in poor vole years when there were also few first-year birds present. The study confirmed the high rate of turnover reported elsewhere in small raptors, and further indicated that the composition and turnover of the population were related to food supply and seasonal patterns of migration.  相似文献

We document a seasonal shift in the sex ratios of broods produced by resident southeastern American kestrels (Falco sparverius paulus) breeding in nest boxes in Florida. Early in the breeding season, most biased broods were biased towards males, whereas later in the season, most biased broods were biased towards females. Computer-simulated broods subjected to sex-biased egg and/or nestling mortality demonstrate that it is possible that differential mortality produced the pattern of bias that we observed. However, these simulations do not exclude the possibility that female kestrels were manipulating the primary sex ratio of the broods. We present evidence that this sex ratio shift is adaptive: for males we detected breeding as yearlings, all had fledged early the previous season. No such relationship between season and the probability of breeding as a yearling was found for females. We propose the Early Bird Hypothesis as the ecological basis for the advantage of fledg ing early in males. We hypothesize that pre-emptive competition among post-fledging, dispersing males for breeding sites confers an advantage to males fledged early in the season. This hypothesis may explain why a non-migratory population of the Eurasian kestrel (F. tinnunculus) and non-migratory American kestrels breeding in Florida (F. s. paulus) exhibit this seasonal shift in sex ratios, whereas migratory American kestrels (F. s. sparverius) breeding in Saskatchewan, Canada, do not. We discuss the relevance of the Early Bird Hypothesis for other animal species.  相似文献

The red-backed shrike Lanius collurio is an open-cup nesting passerine bird, which protects its nest aggressively attacking predators near the nest. The response of parents to a human observer was investigated during the nesting period 1999–2001 in Poland. The intensity of nest defence increased as the breeding cycle progressed in accordance to the offspring value hypothesis. However, we did not find an increase in the level of aggression according to the number of offspring and the time of season. Contrary to previous predictions, we did not find gender differences in nest defence. More aggressive parents, both females and males, have significantly better breeding success than quieter individuals.  相似文献

1. Reproductive success of individual females may be determined by density-dependent effects, especially in species where territory provides the resources for a reproducing female and territory size is inversely density-dependent.
2. We manipulated simultaneously the reproductive effort (litter size manipulation: ± 0 and + 2 pups) and breeding density (low and high) of nursing female bank voles Clethrionomys glareolus in outdoor enclosures. We studied whether the reproductive success (number and quality of offspring) of individual females is density-dependent, and whether females can compensate for increased reproductive effort when not limited by saturated breeding density.
3. The females nursing their young in the low density weaned significantly more offspring than females in the high density, independent of litter manipulation.
4. Litter enlargements did not increase the number of weanlings per female, but offspring from enlarged litters had lower weight than control litters.
5. In the reduced density females increased the size of their home range, but litter manipulation had no significant effect on spacing behaviour of females. Increased home range size did not result in heavier weanlings.
6. Mother's failure to successfully wean any offspring was more common in the high density treatment, whereas litter manipulation or mother's weight did not affect weaning success.
7. We conclude that reproductive success of bank vole females is negatively density-dependent in terms of number, but not in the quality of weanlings.
8. The nursing effort of females (i.e. the ability to provide enough food for pups) seems not to be limited by density-dependent factors.  相似文献

Reproductive-effort theory predicts that parents of any given age should expend more parental effort (1) as their residual reproductive value declines, and (2) as the reproductive value of offspring increases. An observational and experimental study of nest defense by captive red jungle fowl hens was used to examine these two predictions. Both young and old individuals significantly increased defense of the second nest compared to the first nest within a season; this pattern occurred for the defense of both eggs and chicks. Old hens showed significantly greater defense of both eggs and chicks in each of the nests than did young hens. Both young and old hens were significantly more defensive of chicks than eggs in each of two clutches of a season. Hens also reduced their nest defense significantly at the end of a two to three-day period after their chicks were replaced with eggs, and increased their nest defense after eggs were exchanged for chicks. Hens given four chicks showed more vigorous defense than hens given two chicks. When the brood size of hens with four chicks was reduced to one chick, the hens responded by exhibiting less vigorous nest defense. These patterns of nest defense in jungle fowl were not confounded by parental experience of hens, or differences in offspring quality that are related to time of breeding, maternal age, sire genetic quality or vulnerability of offspring to weather.  相似文献

Males in the cavity-nesting house wren (Troglodytes aedon) frequentlyadd arthropod cocoons to their nests during building, possiblyas an ornamental cue for female choice. We tested this hypothesisby comparing the time to pairing for males that did and didnot add cocoons to their nests and for males in whose nestswe manipulated the number of cocoons prior to pairing. We alsotested the hypothesis that females acquire fitness-related benefitsby selecting mates based on their use of cocoons. The use ofcocoons by males was not consistently related to habitat, butthe number of cocoons added per nest increased during the courseof the breeding season. Contrary to prediction, the time topairing for males adding cocoons was significantly longer thanthat for males without cocoons in their nests at both unmanipulatedand experimental nests. There was also no consistent fitness-relatedbenefit for females related to the use of cocoons by their mates.Therefore, we conclude that females did not prefer males thatadded cocoons to their nests, and that the increased time topairing for males that add cocoons likely results in fitness-relatedcosts brought about by delayed breeding. Nonetheless, male housewrens routinely use cocoons, and why they do so remains unknown.  相似文献

Breeding density, synchrony, and experience are expected toinfluence the frequency of extrapair paternity in birds. UsingDNA fingerprinting, we examined the effect of these factorson tree swallows nesting at relatively high (grids of nest-boxes)and low (solitary boxes at least 100 m from the nearest neighbor)densities and in relatively synchronous (Alberta) and asynchronous(Ontario) populations in Canada. The mean percentage of extrapairoffspring per nest did not differ significantly between birdsnesting in grids (43%, n = 22 families) and solitary boxes (57%,n = 12 families). Similarly, there was no significant differencein the mean percentage of extrapair offspring per nest betweenrelatively synchronous (60%, n = 12 Alberta families) and asynchronous(41%, n = 22 Ontario families) populations. We also found noconsistent pattern between extrapair paternity and breedingexperience among seven males and seven females examined overtwo to three breeding seasons. Female tree swallows can influencethe fertilization success of extrapair males by active selectionand rejection of copulation partners. We suggest that this abilitylimits the predicted effect of various ecological factors onthe frequency of extrapair paternity  相似文献

The reasons for female desertion of offspring and the evolution of predominantly male care among monogamous bird species are not clearly understood. We studied parental effort during the incubation and chick rearing periods in the Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata in western Finland, and compared timing of brood desertion with other populations in Europe. Males and females contributed equally to incubation and showed no differences in the intensity of mobbing behaviour towards a potential nest predator (stuffed crow) shortly after hatching. However, females deserted their offspring approximately halfway through the brooding period ( c. 16 d after hatching), while males remained with chicks until independence ( c. 35 d). Females with late-laid clutches deserted their offspring sooner after hatching than those with clutches produced earlier in the season. Curlew females deserted younger chicks in northeast Europe, where laying dates were later, breeding seasons shorter and migration distances were longer, than in western and central Europe. We suggest that the most likely reasons for offspring desertion by females may be associated with increased female survivorship and maintenance of pairbond between years.  相似文献

Bright plumage, song display, and aggressive resource defence in males may cause higher predation on males than on females during the breeding season. However, in birds, higher predation on females is sometimes observed. Parental investment may be high in females (egg-laying, incubation and feeding of offspring), which might lead to a high risk of predation. We studied predation by sparrowhawks Accipiter nisus in relation to behaviour in pied flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca where breeding males are more conspicuous than females in plumage and behaviour. Male pied flycatchers generally occupied more exposed perches than females. Females were more mobile and foraged more than males, especially prior to and during incubation. During the incubation and nestling stages, when predation on the sexes could be directly compared, sparrowhawks took about the same number of male and female pied flycatchers. During incubation, however, females spent about 77% of the day in the nest and were 4.7 times more vulnerable than males per unit of time available (i.e. outside the nest). A comparison with the chaffinch Fringilla coelebs , where hawks took more females than males, indicates that timing of breeding, foraging behaviour and parental roles of males and females affect predation risk.  相似文献

The performance of 144 pairs of European kestrels breeding in upland young conifer plantations was studied from 1976 to 1979. Laying started between 15 April and 1 June, and was 14 days later, on average, in the poor vole year of 1977 than in the other years. Some 38% of pairs failed to fledge young, mainly because they deserted clutches during incubation. The proportion of pairs that failed was positively correlated with total rainfall in May, but apparently not with estimated spring vole numbers. There was a marked seasonal decline in both clutch size and the probability of breeding successfully, so that early laying pairs fledged 2.7 times as many young per attempt as did late pairs. Within years, there was considerable variation in the laying date between pairs. On the available data, environmental factors, such as the habitat or vole numbers around the nest, appeared to have less influence on this variation than did the age of the pair members, their pairing date or their previous breeding experience.  相似文献
