The fatty acid composition of two motile (strains WH 8113 and WH 8103) and one nonmotile (strain WH 7803) marine cyanobacteria has been determined and compared with two freshwater unicellular Synechocystis species (strain PCC 6308 and PCC 6803). The fatty acid composition of lipid extracts of isolated membranes from Synechocystis PCC 6803 was found to be identical to that of whole cells. All the marine strains contained myristic acid (14:0) as the major fatty acid, with only traces of polyunsaturated fatty acids. This composition is similar to Synechocystis PCC 6308. The major lipid classes of the nonmotile marine strain were identified as digalactosyl diacylglycerol, monogalactosyl diacylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, and sulfoquinovosyl diacylglycerol, identical to those found in other cyanobacteria.Abbreviations DGDG Digalactosyl diacylglycerol - MGDG Monogalactosyldiacylglycerol - PG Phosphatidylglycerol - SGDG sulfoquinovosyl diacylglycerol - gc gas chromatography - ms mass spectrometry  相似文献

Community composition, biomass and primary production of phytoplankton were studied in the east- ernmost section of the Westerschelde estuary in 1984. Photosynthetic characteristics were compared with distribution of some dominant phytoplankton species along a salinity gradient from 5 to 22 Spring phytoplankton, with Cyclotella meneghiniana (freshwater) and Skeletonema costatum (marine) as the dominant species grew faster than summer phytoplankton. In summer, biomass achieved its maximum, due to the riverine Scenedesmus species and the marine diatoms Thalassiosira levanderi and Ditylum brightwellii, as dominants. Growth conditions were more favourable to phytoplankton communities above 15%, than below this salinity. The data were compared with previous studies (1972) of species composition in the area.  相似文献

Sponges are well documented to harbor large amounts of microbes. Both culture-dependent and molecular approaches have revealed remarkable bacterial diversity in marine sponges. Fungi are commonly isolated from marine sponges, yet no reports on phylogenetic diversity of sponge-inhabiting fungi exist. In this report, we investigated the phylogenetic diversity of culturable fungi from the Hawaiian alien marine sponges Suberites zeteki and Gelliodes fibrosa. A total of 44 independent isolates were recovered from these two sponge species, representing 7 orders and 22 genera of Ascomycota. The majority (58%) of fungal isolates from S. zeteki resided in the Pleosporales group, while the predominant isolates (52%) from G. fibrosa were members of the Hypocreales group. Though differing in fungal species composition and structure, culturable communities of these two sponges displayed similar phylogenetic diversity. At the genus level, only two genera Penicillium and Trichoderma in the Eurotiales and Hypocreales orders, respectively, were present in both sponge species. The other genera of the fungal isolates were associated with either S. zeteki or G. fibrosa. Some of these fungal genera had been isolated from sponges collected in other marine habitats, but more than half of these genera were identified for the first time in these two marine sponges. Overall, the diversity of culturable fungal communities from these two sponge species is much higher than that observed in studies of marine sponges from other areas. This is the first report of phylogenetic diversity of marine sponge-associated fungi and adds one more dimension to our current understanding of the phylogenetic diversity of sponge-symbiotic microbes.  相似文献

The most abundant marine fungi encountered in various regions of the Sea of Japan belong to the generaPenicillium, Aspergillus, Wardomyces, Trichoderma, Chrysosporium, andChaetomium. Facultative marine fungi of the generaScytalidium, Verticillium, andOidiodendron and obligate marine fungi of the genusDendryphiella are much less abundant. The composition of marine sediments and the anthropogenic load on them were found to influence the abundance and species diversity of fungi, as well as the occurrence of fungal strains producing hemolytically active substances. The biodiversity of mycobiota and the abundance of hemotoxin-producing fungi in marine sediments may be used to evaluate the anthropogenic load on marine biocenoses. Hemolytic compounds were produced by 57% of the fungi isolated from marine sediments. The hemolytic activity ofChaetomium spiculipilium was revealed in the fraction of the culture liquid containing extracellular fatty acids and pigments. The fatty acid composition of this marine fungus was determined.  相似文献

The ichtyofauna of the Porto-Lagos Lagoon in northern Greece was sampled over 17 months, using a bag-seine net, to investigate factors influencing species seasonal composition and abundance. Of the 35 resident, migrant and straggler species caught, representing 22 families, the most numerically dominant species were Atherina boyeri (46.4% of total catch), which today is the most economically important species, followed by Pomatoschistus marmoratus (28% of total catch) and Aphanius fasciatus (9.1% of total catch). Mugilidae and Sparidae were the most diverse families. According to various diversity indices, the lagoon’s ichthyofauna was found to be most diverse in May 1990; taxonomic spread however, as shown by the taxonomic distinctness index (Δ*), was lowest in July 1990, when the greatest monthly water temperature range was observed (13.5 °C). Overall fish relative abundance was positively correlated with the maximum monthly water temperature (r2=0.32, p < 0.05). The NMDS and cluster analysis performed on the bag seine catches showed four groupings, based mainly on the life history of the species. The main group consisted of all the resident species of the lagoon and four mugilid species that were present throughout most of the sampling period. The second group consisted of marine migrant species that spent a short period of their life in the lagoon. Marine migrants and one marine straggler that were found once or twice formed the third group, while the fourth group consisted of species with casual presence. The importance of Porto-Lagos Lagoon as nursery and feeding area for marine species was confirmed by the catch of young individuals of several marine species.  相似文献

Lignicolous material was collected from 5 marine locations in Brunei: a rocky headland, a sandy beach, a man-made brackish lake, a healthy mangrove and an oil polluted mangrove. Higher marine fungi present were identified and their percentage occurrence noted. The common marine fungi varied from habitat to habitat. Antennospora quadricornuta was most common at the rocky headland, Corollospora pulchella at the sandy beach and Halosarpheia marina at the brackish lake. In the mangroves the most common species were Halocyphina villosa (healthy) and Cirrenalia pygmea and Lulworthia grandispora (oil polluted). Differences in species composition from one habitat to the next were observed, although some fungi occurred throughout. There were significantly less diversity and numbers of fungi in the oil polluted mangrove when compared to the healthy mangrove. Observations concerning the ecology of tropical marine fungi are made.  相似文献

Cyanobacterial communities of the splash zone of two Croatian islands, Veruda and Ugljan, were surveyed. At each island, we studied eight localities with different aspects. From all 336 samples, a total of 42 cyanobacterial species, one green alga, and one red alga were found. In both islands Hyella spp. and Gloeocapsopsis crepidinum dominated and Entophysalis deusta, Solentia spp., Kyrtuthrix dalmatica and Mastigocoleus testarum were found frequently. Multivariate statistical analysis of species composition shows that the vertical gradient is the strongest determinant of species composition and that there are statistically significant but not very pronounced differences in species composition between the two islands. Species composition among individual sites within islands differed slightly, and between localities decreased rather slowly with the distance of individual samples (i.e. the similarity distance decay was very slow), showing that even close samples can have quite different species composition. The species accumulation curves do not reach their asymptote, indicating that many samples are needed to reasonably cover the species richness of a site. This study highlights the importance of in-depth species counts and high density sampling along vertical gradients for satisfactory cyanobacterial community assessments in marine coastal splash zones.  相似文献

The fatty acid composition of total lipids extracted from seven different tissues (fat, liver, cerebrum, cerebellum, lung, kidney and muscle) of 10 striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) (weight 75.7±16.2 kg) found dead or moribund during a morbillivirus epizootic, and from two tissues (fat and liver) of 54 loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) (18.5±10.5 kg) seized dead after illegal capture, both from the Mediterranean Sea, have been determined by high resolution chromatography techniques. When comparing both species, fatty acid composition is surprisingly similar, with a predominance of the monoenoic followed by the saturated group of fatty acids, and a very close ratio of polyunsaturates n-3/n-6. The relatively high arachidonic acid content in the liver of the two marine species is remarkable. The similar diet can play an important role in these findings, but it is suggested that probably metabolic pathways and essential fatty acid requirements between both marine vertebrates are similar, more than is expected from their earlier filogenetic evolutionary divergence.  相似文献

This study describes the diet composition, diet overlap and prey diversity in two economically and ecologically important marine catfish species: the bronze catfish (Netuma bilineata) and the blacktip sea catfish (Plicofollis dussumieri) collected between January and December 2015 from the northern Arabian Sea coast of Pakistan. Stomach data of 342 bronze catfish and 283 blacktip sea catfish were examined. Diet composition and feeding strategy of each species by identification of stomach contents were weighed and enumerated. Both species primarily consumed teleosts, Brachyura and small amounts of a wide variety of prey items; however, specialization was a more common trait for the bronze catfish than for the black tip sea catfish. The Morisita‐Horn index showed considerable diet overlap in percentage of mean weights (0.847) than in numbers (0.612) between co‐prey pairs of both species. The highest Bray‐Curtis similarity between the southwest monsoon (SWM) and south inter monsoon (SIM) was observed in bronze catfish and lowest between autumn inter monsoon (AIM) seasons in both species. While Bray‐Curtis dissimilarity was observed, both species share diet niches and diet overlap. The present study evaluation of the feeding strategy and potential competition between two sympatric species of marine catfishes can provide the framework for their conservation and management in the region.  相似文献

Summary

Two and a half years of data were collected from the lower Great Fish River, head region and estuary to determine the fish species composition within these areas. Gilchristella aestuaria, Liza dumerilii, Rhabdosargus holubi and Pomadasys commersonnii were the four most abundant species captured, with riverine flow rate having an important effect on both species composition and numbers of fishes in the different regions. Most marine species displayed a strong inverse relationship between catch per unit effort and elevated freshwater inputs. Euryhaline marine species dominated the catches at all sampling sites during low flows but were less common during high flow periods when catadromous species were most abundant. Based on the available evidence it is suggested that for most marine species in the river this decline in abundance is related to low conductivity levels following floods rather than avoidance of elevated flows. The impact of elevated suspensoid concentrations and lowered dissolved oxygen concentrations on freshwater and estuarine fish populations during major river flooding is also discussed.  相似文献

Ecological specialization is an important engine of evolutionary change and adaptive radiation, but empirical evidence of local adaptation in marine environments is rare, a pattern that has been attributed to the high dispersal ability of marine taxa and limited geographic barriers to gene flow. The broad-nosed pipefish, Syngnathus typhle, is one of the most broadly distributed syngnathid species and shows pronounced variation in cranial morphology across its range, a factor that may contribute to its success in colonizing new environments. We quantified variation in cranial morphology across the species range using geometric morphometrics, and tested for evidence of trophic specialization by comparing individual-level dietary composition with the community of prey available at each site. Although the diets of juvenile pipefish from each site were qualitatively similar, ontogenetic shifts in dietary composition resulted in adult populations with distinctive diets consistent with their divergent cranial morphology. Morphological differences found in nature are maintained under common garden conditions, indicating that trophic specialization in S. typhle is a heritable trait subject to selection. Our data highlight the potential for ecological specialization in response to spatially variable selection pressures in broadly distributed marine species.  相似文献

Data on the fish fauna of the Leschenault Estuary on the lower west coast of Australia were collected and used as a model to elucidate the characteristics of permanently open estuaries with a reverse salinity gradient, which undergo seasonal changes similar to many other estuaries with Mediterranean climate. Focus was placed on determining (1) the relationships of the number of species, density, life cycle category and species composition of fishes with region (within estuary), season and year and salinity, (2) whether species are partitioned along the lengths of such systems and (3) the extent and significance of any inter‐decadal changes in species composition. The analyses and interpretation involved using multi‐factorial permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) and analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) designs, and three new or recently published visualization tools, i.e. modified non‐metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) plots, coherent species curves and segmented bubble plots. The base, lower, upper and apex regions of the Leschenault Estuary, along which the salinity increased in each season except in winter when most rainfall occurs, were sampled seasonally for the 2 years between winter 2008 and autumn 2010. Estuarine residents contributed twice as many individuals, but less than half the number of species as marine taxa. While the numbers of marine species and estuarine residents declined between the base or lower and apex regions, the individuals of marine species dominated the catches in the base region and estuarine residents in the other three regions. Ichthyofaunal composition in each region underwent conspicuous annual cyclical changes, due to time‐staggered differences in recruitment among species, and changed sequentially along the estuary, both paralleling salinity trends. Different groups of species characterized the fauna in the different regions and seasons, thereby partitioning resources among species. The ichthyofauna of the apex region, in which salinities reached 54 and temperatures 36° C, recorded the highest maximum density and, in terms of abundance, was dominated (90%) by three atherinid species, emphasizing the ability of this family to tolerate extreme conditions. Comparisons between the data for 2008–2010 and 1994 demonstrate that the spotted hardyhead Craterocephalus mugiloides and the common hardyhead Atherinomorus vaigiensis had colonized and become abundant in the Leschenault Estuary in the intervening period. This represents a southwards extension of the distribution of these essentially tropical species during a period of increasing coastal water temperatures as a result of climate change. The abundance of weed‐associated species, e.g. the western gobbleguts Ostorhinchus rueppellii and the soldier Gymnapistes marmoratus, increased, whereas that of the longfinned goby Favonigobius lateralis decreased, probably reflecting increases in eutrophication and siltation, respectively.  相似文献

Total lipid content, lipid classes and fatty acid composition were studied in various tissues of the Antarctic clam Laternula elliptica in an early austral summer. A histological examination of the gonads revealed that most of the clams examined were spawning or ready to spawn. Lipid content was highest in gills (14.9% of tissue dry weight), followed by gonads (10.9%) and digestive glands (9.9%), and averaged 8.2% for the soft tissues. The overall lipid contents were relatively low compared to temperate bivalves at a similar reproductive stage. Lipid class composition in the total lipid of L. elliptica was quite similar to those of most marine bivalves at lower latitudes, being dominated by triacylglycerols (19.3–41.4% of total lipids) and phospholipids (18.9–28.3%) in most of the organs. Large amounts of triacylglycerol deposits in non-reproductive tissues, particularly in siphon and gill, indicate a potential role of lipid as maintenance energy reserve, although the low lipid contents suggest that lipid may not serve as an energy reserve for any food-limited periods. Fatty acid composition in L. elliptica was also typical of marine bivalves with predominance of 16:0 (26%) and 20:5n-3 (18%) acids. Total fatty acids from the soft tissues showed a moderate level of unsaturation (50.6%), and about 35% of the total fatty acids were polyunsaturated. These values were not significantly different from, or even lower than those of marine bivalves in warmer waters. However, the content of 20:5n-3 (18.2% of total fatty acids), which dominated n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, was similar to those reported for other marine bivalve species in temperate waters. The fatty acid composition of L. elliptica reflected dietary input of some microalgal species. The nanoflagellates Cryptomonas spp., which were reportedly rich in 16:0, 18:3n-3 and 20:5n-3, predominated in the water column during the present investigation. Accepted: 19 June 1999  相似文献

The distribution of marine phytoplankton will shift alongside changes in marine environments, leading to altered species frequencies and community composition. An understanding of the response of mixed populations to abiotic changes is required to adequately predict how environmental change may affect the future composition of phytoplankton communities. This study investigated the growth and competitive ability of two marine diatoms, Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Thalassiosira pseudonana, along a temperature gradient (9–35°C) spanning the thermal niches of both species under both high‐nitrogen nutrient‐replete and low‐nitrogen nutrient‐limited conditions. Across this temperature gradient, the competitive outcome under both nutrient conditions at any assay temperature, and the critical temperature at which competitive advantage shifted from one species to the other, was well predicted by the temperature dependencies of the growth rates of the two species measured in monocultures. The temperature at which the competitive advantage switched from P. tricornutum to T. pseudonana increased from 18.8°C under replete conditions to 25.3°C under nutrient‐limited conditions. Thus, P. tricornutum was a better competitor over a wider temperature range in a low N environment. Being able to determine the competitive outcomes from physiological responses of single species to environmental changes has the potential to significantly improve the predictive power of phytoplankton spatial distribution and community composition models.  相似文献

Aim The endoparasites of Sebastes capensis Gmelin are examined over most of its geographical range (coasts of Peru, Chile, Argentina and South Africa) to determine: (1) whether the endoparasite communities of this fish show zoogeographical patterns; and (2) if so, whether there are any relationships between spatial variations in the endoparasite fauna and known zoogeographical patterns for marine free‐living organisms (e.g. prey that are included in the life cycles of endoparasites). Location Fish were captured at nine localities along the Pacific coast of South America, from 11° S in the centre of the Peruvian coast, to 52° S in southern Chile, and also at two localities in the Atlantic Ocean, at 43° S in Argentina, and 34° S in South Africa. Methods From April to September 2003 and April to August 2004, 626 fish were captured. Endoparasites and diet were examined following traditional methods. Cluster analyses were used to evaluate the distribution patterns of the endoparasite communities, and to evaluate similarities in the prey composition per locality. Results The endoparasite fauna of S. capensis consisted of four species widely distributed along the Pacific coast: Ascarophis cf. sebastodis, Anisakis sp., Corynosoma australe, and Pseudopecoelus sp. Other parasites were distributed only in some geographical areas. The species richness of the parasite communities increased with latitude along the Pacific coast, while parasite communities from Argentina and South Africa showed low species richness. Cluster analyses based on endoparasite composition and on prey composition grouped localities in a way consistent with known biogeographical areas for marine free‐living organisms. Main conclusions The endoparasites of S. capensis exhibit a pattern associated with known biogeographical areas for free‐living organisms. The latitudinal increase in endoparasite community richness is associated with changes in prey composition (intermediate hosts) and also possibly with the presence of definitive hosts. Therefore, the biogeographical patterns of prey are considered key determinants of the endoparasite community structure of the host.  相似文献

Four species of red marine algae (Rhodophyceae), five species of brown marine algae (Pheophyceae) and two species of green marine algae (Chlorophyceae) were examined for the fatty acid composition of the three lipid groups separated by silica gel column chromatography (neutral lipids, glycolipids, phospholipids). The four red algae had high contents of 16:0 and C20-polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), 20:5n-3 ranging from 18 to 49% of the total fatty acid content and 20:4n-6 from 1.4 to 22.5%, these fatty acids were evenly distributed in all lipid groups. The five brown algae had high contents of 18:1n-9, 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3 but low content of 20:5n-3. No precise trend was detected for the distribution of these fatty acids in the three lipid groups. The two green algae had high contents of 16:0, 18:1n-7 and 18:3n-3 and a very low content of PUFA. They contained also large amounts of 16:4n-3 together with 16:2n-6 and 16:3n-3. While 16:2n-6 was mainly found in phospholipids, 16:4n-3 was mainly distributed in neutral lipids and glycolipids.Porphyra umbilicalis represents the richest source of 20:5n-3 whileUndaria pinnatifida can be selected when a balanced mixture of (n-6) and (n-3) PUFA is required.Author for correspondence  相似文献

Gut microbiota play a fundamental role in the nutrition of many vertebrate herbivores through foregut and hindgut fermentation of plant carbohydrates. Some species of marine herbivorous fishes contain moderate to high levels of short-chain fatty acids in the hindgut, indicating the importance of hindgut fermentation. Herbivorous fish hindgut microbiota are diverse and can vary with geographic location, but data on the scale of geographic variation involving a few km of separation are limited. Here, we used the 16S rRNA gene to describe community composition of the gut microbiota of the herbivorous species Kyphosus vaigiensis and K. cinerascens collected in the vicinity of Lizard Island, northern Great Barrier Reef, Australia, in 2011 and 2017. Microbiota community structure differed between posterior hindgut sections, host species, sampling years and two mid-shelf and outer reef locations approximately 20 km apart. Hindgut bacterial community composition varied remarkably between mid-shelf and outer reef locations, and among individual fish on the mid-shelf reef. In both fish species, the most abundant phyla were Pseudomonadota, Bacillota and Bacteroidota, followed by Spirochaetota, Thermodesulfobacteriota and Verrucomicrobiota. There were no clear differences between the host species in terms of the relative abundance and composition of bacterial genera in outer reef samples. In contrast, the dominant genera differed between mid-shelf samples of K. cinerascens and K. vaigiensis, being Endozoicomonas-like (Pseudomonadota) and Brevinema (Spirochaetota), respectively. Endozoicomonas are emerging as important symbionts in many marine hosts worldwide and are thought to be important in the coral sulphur cycle. Differences in microbiota composition were not associated with variation in fish condition, suggesting that the different microbial taxa perform equivalent functional roles.

To trace environmental changes in water hydrology and salinity in the Late Glacial to Holocene of the Gulf of Gdańsk, a south‐eastern bay of the Baltic Sea within the maritime zone of Poland, the distribution of ostracod valves was studied in 20 sediment cores collected from both the shallow‐ and deep‐water zones (depth 10.9–67.5 m). The studied sediment sequences yielded ca. 3000 valves of 21 ostracod species, of which only five are known to live today in the Gulf, which has a present maximum depth of 118 m and water salinity up to 7–8‰. The majority of the studied sediment layers that contained ostracod valves corresponded to the period of the Late Glacial to Mid‐Holocene and was dominated by non‐marine species, of which the most common were Candona neglecta (present in 17 cores), Cytherissa lacustris (15 cores) and Candona candida (14 cores). By clustering classification five major ostracod assemblage types were recognised in the studied cores. Initial assemblage types dominated mostly by inhabitants of the profundal/sub‐littoral zones of modern oligo‐mesotrophic lakes (C. lacustris and C. neglecta) in some sediment sequences were replaced in stratigraphical order by the assemblages dominated by brackish‐water species (Cyprideis torosa or Cytheromorpha fuscata). The structure and species composition of the distinguished ostracod assemblage types as well as their successional transitions indicate that the studied sediments were deposited initially in the Late Glacial in freshwater lacustrine conditions, and subsequently, during the Holocene marine transgression, covered by marine sands. The present results confirm and consolidate inferences based on previously published data on ostracods from the western part of the Gulf of Gdańsk as well as on other biotic (molluscs, diatoms) and abiotic (seismoacoustic) indices from this area (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

The patterns of occurrence of photosynthetic pigments and fatty acids among seven available species (11 strains) of marine raphidophytes were determined and used as chemotaxonomic markers. All currently recognized genera of marine raphidophytes were included for analysis: that is, Chattonella, Fibrocapsa, Heterosigma, Olisthodiscus and Haramonas. The characteristic pigment composition was shown to be chlorophyll a, chlorophylls c1 and/or c2, fucoxanthin as the major carot-enoid, β,β-carotene and any or all of zeaxanthin, violaxanthin and an auroxanthin-like pigment as the minor carotenoids. The carotenoid composition of all marine raphidophyte genera investigated was virtually the same, except in Fibrocapsa and Haramonas, which differed due to the occurrence of fucoxanthinol and 19′-butanoyloxyfucoxanthin, respectively. These fucoxanthin derivatives, in addition to fucoxanthin, have potential chemotaxonomic use for differentiating the two species. In all 11 strains, 15 fatty acids (saturated, mono-unsaturated and polyunsaturated) were determined. Significant taxonomic distinctions between genera were reflected by their fatty acid profiles. A rapid key for the differentiation of genera, in addition to morphological features, may be the absence of the 18:4 fatty acid in Olisthodiscus; presence of 18:5 in Heterosigma; the presence of fucoxanthinol in Fibrocapsa and presence of 19′-butanoyloxyfucoxanthin in Haramonas.  相似文献
