The growth properties of juvenile spotted wolffish Anarhichas minor reared at 4, 6, 8 and 12° C, and a group reared under 'temperature steps', (T‐step) i.e . with temperature reduced successively from 12 to 9 and 6° C were investigated. Growth rate and feed efficiency ration was significantly influenced by temperature and fish size. Overall growth rate was highest at 6° C (0·68% day−1) and lowest at 12° C (0·48% day−1), while the 4 and 8° C, and the T‐step groups had similar overall growth rates, i.e . 0·59, 0·62 and 0·51% day−1 respectively. Optimal temperature for growth ( T opt G ) and feed efficiency ratio (Topt FCE) decreased as fish size increased, indicating an ontogenetic reduction in T opt G and T opt FCE. The results suggest a T opt G of juvenile spotted wolffish in the size range 135–380 g, dropping from 7·9° C for 130–135 g to 6·6° C for 360–380 g juveniles. The T opt FCE dropped from 7·4° C for 120–150 g to 6·5° C for 300–380 g juveniles. A wider parabolic regression curve between growth, feed efficiency ratio and temperature as fish size increased, may indicate increased temperature tolerance with size. Individual growth rates varied greatly at all time periods within the experimental temperatures, but at the same time significant size rank correlations were maintained and this may indicate stable size hierarchies in juvenile spotted wolffish.  相似文献

Impact of temperature on food intake and growth in juvenile burbot   总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3
The effect of temperature on food consumption, food conversion and somatic growth was investigated with juvenile burbot Lota lota (age 0 years). Juvenile burbot showed a significant dome shaped relationship between relative daily food consumption ( C R) and temperature ( T ) with C R = − 0·00044 T 2 + 0·01583 T  − 0·06010; ( n  = 90, r 2 = 0·61). Maximum C R was at 17·9° C (95% CL 17·2–18·6° C). The temperature related instantaneous growth rate ( G ) also followed a dome shaped function with G  = − 0·000063 T 2 + 0·002010 T  − 0·007462; ( n  = 95, r 2 = 0·57), with maximum growth rate at 16·0° C (95% CL 15·3–16·6° C). A significant linear relationship was found between the water temperature and the conversion coefficient ( C C) with C C = − 1·63 T  + 59·04; ( n  = 80, r 2 = 0·74). The results indicate that juvenile burbot in large lakes benefit from higher water temperatures in the littoral zone, by increased food uptake and growth, especially during the warm summer months. Because profundal water temperatures do not reflect the optimal temperature for food consumption in large burbot, temperature is unlikely to be the main proximate factor for the obligate littoral‐profundal migration of juvenile burbot observed in many lake populations.  相似文献

The environmental relationships and ecophysiology of Azorella compacta, a giant cushion plant, were investigated in Parque Nacional Lauca, Chile (18°10'–18°25' S and 69°16' W, 4400 m asl). The diurnal temperature range can reach 42 °C on some days of the year. The surface temperature of A. compacta was 13 °C below that of the air temperature of −7 °C at dawn, but from midmorning to late afternoon, the plant surface temperature remained within a few degrees of the air temperature. Soil surface temperatures did not differ between north- and south-facing slopes, but a model showed an increase in radiation reception by north-facing slopes throughout most of the year. Gas exchange measurements of A. compacta measured at the onset of the wet season ranged from −0.6662 to 11.4 μmol·m−2·s−1, and maximum stomatal conductance (Gs) was 410 mmol·m−2·s−1. The estimated light compensation point was 89 μmol·m−2·s−1 and estimated light saturation occurred at about 1280 μmol·m−2·s−1. Diurnal water potential measurements for A. compacta ranged from −1.67 to −2.65 MPa. This is one of the first ecophysiological studies of a tropical alpine cushion plant.  相似文献

The mean rate of oxygen consumption (routine respiration rate, R R, mg O2 fish−1 h−1), measured for individual or small groups of haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus (3–12 cm standard length, L S) maintained for 5 days within flow‐through respiratory chambers at four different temperatures, increased with increasing dry mass ( M D). The relationship between R R and M D was allometric ( R R = α  M b ) with b values of 0·631, 0·606, 0·655 and 0·650 at 5·0, 8·0, 12·0 and 15·0° C, respectively. The effect of temperature ( T ) and M D on mean R R was described by     indicating a Q 10 of 2·27 between 5 and 15° C. Juvenile haddock routine metabolic scope, calculated as the ratio of the mean of highest and lowest deciles of R R measured in each chamber, significantly decreased with temperature such that the routine scope at 15° C was half that at 5° C. The cost of feeding ( R SDA) was c . 3% of consumed food energy, a value half that found for larger gadoid juveniles and adults.  相似文献

Embryos and yolk‐feeding larvae of lake minnow Eupallasella percnurus were reared at 13, 16, 19, 22 and 25° C with no access to external food. Time from egg activation to first embryonic movements, hatching, filling of swimbladder and final yolk resorption increased with decreasing temperature. At 13° C, c . 40% of larvae were unable to fill their swimbladder. The predicted lower temperature at which development and growth ceased (biological zero, t 0) was the same for both processes, c . 7·5–10·5° C. There was no ontogenetic shift in the t 0 value. Temperature coefficients for development ( Q 10dev.) ranged from 2 to 3 at 19–25° C, but were higher in hatched larvae at lower temperatures. Eggs of E. percnurus had a combination of small size, high hydration and low caloric value of fresh matter. Dry mass of larval tissue on yolk, percentage of dry matter in wet matter, and specific growth rate were maximized at 22 and 25° C. At 19–25° C, energy and matter contained in the initial eggs were converted to body tissue most efficiently. Temperatures from 22 to 25° C are considered optimal for E. percnurus embryos and yolk‐feeding larvae and are recommended for their indoor rearing.  相似文献

Thermal tolerance of a northern population of striped bass Morone saxatilis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Thermal tolerance of age 0+ year Shubenacadie River (Nova Scotia, Canada) striped bass Morone saxatilis juveniles (mean ± s . e . fork length, L F, 19·2 ± 0·2 cm) acclimated in fresh water to six temperatures from 5 to 30° C was measured by both the incipient lethal technique (72 h assay), and the critical thermal method ( C m). The lower incipient lethal temperature ranged from 2·4 to 11·3° C, and the upper incipient lethal temperature ( I U) from 24·4 to 33·9° C. The area of thermal tolerance was 618° C2. In a separate experiment, the I U of large age 2+ year fish (34·4 ± 0·5 cm L F) was 1·2 and 0·6° C lower ( P < 0·01) than smaller age 1+ year fish (21·8 ± 0·5 cm L F) at acclimation temperatures of 16 and 23° C. Using the C m, loss of equilibrium occurred at 27·4–37·7° C, loss of righting response at 28·1–38·4° C and onset of spasms at 28·5–38·8° C, depending on acclimation temperature. The linear regression slopes for these three responses were statistically similar (0·41; P > 0·05), but the intercepts differed (25·3, 26·0 and 26·5° C; P < 0·01). The thermal tolerance of this northern population appears to be broader than southern populations.  相似文献

Abstract: The influence of temperature on life table parameters of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Het., Pentatomidae) fed with Alabama argillacea (Hübner) (Lep., Noctuidae) larvae was studied. This predator was kept at constant temperatures of 20, 23, 25, 28, 30 and 33±0.2°C, at relative humidity of 60±10% and photoperiod of L : D 14 : 10. Gross (GRR) and net ( R 0) reproductive rates of P. nigrispinus ranged from 1.6 to 366.6 and from 0.02 to 189.5 females/female at temperatures of 33 and 28°C, respectively; generation time ( T  ) ranged from 33.3 (33°C) to 85.5 (20°C) days; doubling time ( D ) from 0.82 (33°C) to 17.8 (20°C) days; intrinsic rate of increase ( r m ) from −0.13 (33°C) to 0.12 (28°C) per day; and the finite rate of increase ( λ ) from 0.88 (33°C) to 1.12 (28°C) females/female added to the population per day. The ideal age to release P. nigrispinus should be when this predator presents higher reproductive values (VR x ); that is, its adults are about 7 days old, independent of prevailing temperature. Population growth of P. nigrispinus was affected by temperature with maximum numerical response between 28 and 30°C. The negative population growth shown at 33°C may not occur in natural conditions due to milder microclimate in the cotton agroecosystem and due to oscillations of temperature in the course of the day.  相似文献

1. Although large cladocerans are usually uncommon in large rivers, Daphnia lumholtzi (an exotic species in North America) is widespread and occasionally abundant. We collected zooplankton on the Illinois River (Illinois, U.S.A.) in 1995 and 1996 and found that the peak density of D. lumholtzi (25 L−1) typically exceeded that of all native species combined. Maximum density occurred during warm periods (up to 27 °C) when concentrations of inorganic suspended sediments were high (>50 mg L−1).
2. Using a life table experiment, we examined the effects of variation in suspended sediment (0 and 80 mg L−1) and food (104 and 105 Ankistrodesmus cells mL−1) on fitness of D. lumholtzi and the native Daphnia parvula. Daphnia lumholtzi had greater survivorship than D. parvula in most treatments and higher life-time fertility than D. parvula in all treatments. Both species achieved their fastest intrinsic rates of growth in treatments with high food, but their responses to suspended solids differed. The growth rate of D. lumholtzi in high food was slightly increased by higher turbidity, whereas that of D. parvula was depressed.
3. Results suggest that the ability of D. lumholtzi to tolerate suspended solids is an important factor contributing to its success in invading North American rivers.  相似文献

1.  Daphnia magna , a well-studied primary consumer, is mainly known as a filter feeder. In this study, we investigated the ability of D. magna to use periphyton as an alternative food source to phytoplankton. We examined the development of laboratory populations fed with different food sources ( Desmodesmus subspicatus and/or periphyton or neither) over a period of 42 days, and observed the behaviour of the daphnids.
2.  The addition of periphyton to phytoplankton food led to an increase of daphnid population biomass. When fed with periphyton as the only food source, a small but stable D. magna population developed.
3.  The behaviour of daphnids fed with both food sources revealed a preference for feeding on D. subspicatus . Only below a concentration of D. subspicatus of approximately 0.05 mg C L−1 (0.4 × 107 cells L−1) did D. magna use periphyton as an alternative food source.
4.  Periphyton showed distinct reactions to grazing by D. magna . The thickness of the periphyton layer was reduced from about 4 to 1 mm and we observed a change in species composition due to grazing.
5.  The ability of D. magna to graze on periphyton could serve to stabilize its population density and reinforce its competitive advantage over other cladocerans. By switching between food sources, D. magna can act as a coupler between pelagic and benthic habitats and food webs.  相似文献

The influence of temperature on life-table parameters, fecundity and survivorship of the predatory ladybird, Stethorus gilvifrons , fed on Tetranychus urticae was determined at seven constant temperatures of 15°C, 20°C, 25°C, 28°C, 30°C, 35°C and 40°C. No development was observed at 40°C, thus being regarded as the threshold for the development of S. gilvifrons . The results indicate a significant decrease in male and female longevity with increasing temperature from 15°C to 35°C. The longest and shortest longevity were 18.40 and 12.75 days for males and 17.40 and 8.80 days for females, respectively. The intrinsic rate of natural increase ( r m ) and the net reproductive rate ( R 0) of S. gilvifrons linearly increased with increasing temperatures from 15°C to 35°C, while the mean generation time ( T ) and doubling time (DT) decreased linearly within this temperature range. The highest values of r m (0.240 females/female/day) and R 0 (59.27 females/female) and the lowest mean generation time (17.01 days) and DT (2.88 days) were recorded at 35°C. The maximum (185.50 eggs) and minimum (25.50 eggs) measurement of total fecundity was also recorded at 35°C and 15°C, respectively. The results indicate that temperature greatly affected fecundity, survivorship and life-table parameters of S. gilvifrons , and that 35°C is a suitable temperature for population growth of this predator.  相似文献

Lampreys are important research animals. This study investigates some of the Parameters important for culturing the Suspension feeding larvae: food concentration, temperature and crowding. Large larvae ( Lampetra ( Entosphenus ) tridentata Richardson) were used, weigh-ing from l·5 to 3·0 g (wet). Two food types were employed: suspended yeast cells ( Saccharo-myces cerevisiae , 0–20 mg1 – (dry), or, in a few tests, a fine particulate fish food, Liquifry® (Interpet LTD, 0–13 mg l-1). At both 14 and 4°C, yeast could sustain weight increases comparable to those in nature: >6% month-1 for up to 6 months, the duration of the study. In a single lest, a vitamin Supplement failed to improve growth on yeast. Growth-was fastest at 14°C (+41% month-1, max. weight increase), although also substantial at 4°C (+11% month-1, max). Growth could not be sustained at 20°C, due perhaps to difficulty in removing products of food decay from the aquaria. Food level being constant, growth rate varied inversely with animal density. It is suggested that larval lampreys release a growth-inhibiting substance into the sand which they inhabit. Overall, the best growth was obtained at 14° C, with <0·05g of animal (wet weight) – aquarium water and average daily yeast concentrations between 4 and 13 mg –. Liquifry was associated with lowered growth rates when present continually above 4 mg (dry weight) – (14° C), although growth did occur at lower concentrations.  相似文献

The developmental time, survival and reproduction of the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Hom., Aphididae), were evaluated on detached cotton leaves at five constant and two alternating temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 25/30, and 30/35°C). The developmental periods of the immature stages ranged from 12.0 days at 15°C to 4.5 days at 30°C. A constant temperature of 35°C was lethal to the immature stages of A. gossypii. The lower developmental threshold for the cotton aphid was estimated at 6.2°C and it required 108.9 degree-days for a first instar to become adult. The average longevity of adult females was reduced from 39.7 days at 15°C to 12.6 days at 30/35°C. The average reproduction rate per female was 51.5 at 25/30°C and 20.9 at 30/35°C. Mean generation time of the population ranged from 10.4 days at 30°C to 24.5 days at 15°C. The largest per capita growth rate ( r m = 0.413) occurred at 30°C, the smallest at 15°C ( r m = 0.177). It was evident that temperatures over 30°C prolonged development, increased the mortality of the immature stages, shortened adult longevity, and reduced fecundity. The optimal range of temperature for population growth of A. gossypii on cotton was 25/30–30°C.  相似文献

The effect of thermal environment on condition factor was examined for six different size-classes of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua fed to satiation. A weight–length relationship for 8 to 1303 g fish reared at 4–20°C indicated an allometric growth ( W  =  aL b , a  = 0.0045, b  = 3.257) of cod. Changes in relative condition factor ( K rel) with temperature were described with a second order polynomial. The most pronounced effect of temperature on body condition was found in the smallest size-classes, but the curves flattened with increased size. Temperature had size-dependent effects on the relative condition factor obtained from an overall weight–length relationship for all fish in the experiment, i.e. K rel increased with weight at 4°C, but decreased with weight at 16 and 20°C. K rel remained high for most size-classes at 8 and 12°C. The slopes ( b -values) of the weight–length relationships decreased linearly with temperatures from 4 to 16°C.  相似文献

The effect of temperature and NaCl concentration on the growth kinetics of Vibrio anguillarum and V. anguillarum -related (VAR) strains was studied.
For one wild VAR strain, NaCl concentration interfered with growth temperature parameters, in particular, with the maximum growth temperature but also with the optimum temperature (defined as the temperature at which μmax equals its maximal value μopt), and with μopt itself. For the same strain, optimal growth required the adding of NaCl to the medium to a final concentration of 1·5%. These results were not confirmed by tests on a V. anguillarum collection strain.
When the NaCl concentration in the culture media was 1.5%, the optmum temperature for the nine strains studied ranged from 29.7°C to 34°C whereas the maximum temperature ranged between 35.3°C and 38.5°C.
Hence, antbiotic susceptibility testing as well as biochemical identification might be carried out at 30°C in the presence of 1.5% NaCl, which corresponded to a suboptimal growth.  相似文献

1. Bacterial production in the 0–30 m water column of Loch Ness was measured using a dual labelling procedure with [3H] thymidine and [14C] leucine between May 1993 and June 1994. In most cases the uptake of the two labels did not covary, suggesting unbalanced growth. Rates of bacterial production varied from undetectable to 46.2 μg C l–1 day–1. Highest production coincided with the period of highest primary production, but carbon derived from this source was insufficient to meet the bacterial carbon demand, which was met by allochthonous humic inputs to the system.
2. Heterotrophic flagellate (HNAN) grazing rates, measured using fluorescently labelled bacteria, ranged between 10.3 and 24.5 bacteria cell–1 day–1 at temperatures between 5 and 15 °C. They removed up to 27% of the bacterial production per day.
3. Heterotrophic flagellate specific growth rates ranged from 0.043 to 0.093 h–1 between 5 and 15 °C, giving generation times of 7.4–16.1 h.
4. bacterial and HNAN abundances were not coupled, but the highest HNAN grazing impact related to a time of high bacterial productivity.  相似文献

1. Larvae of Pseudochironomus richardsoni were reared to pupation in individual enclosures, in one of three thermal habitats in a northern California stream. The average temperature range in cold seeps was 15–21 °C, while the main channel ranged from 20 to 27 °C, and side pools ranged from 18 to 33 °C. Diet consisted of either diatoms or algal detritus.
2. Specific growth rate ranged from 0.057 to 0.267 day–1. Specific growth and developmental rates were highest on a diatom diet, and increased with temperature. Regressions of growth rate on mean microsite temperature were also significantly altered by diet. Differences in specific growth rate due to diet are magnified at higher temperatures.
3. Pupae reared on diatoms were larger than those reared on detritus. The mass of pupae reared on detritus decreased with increasing temperature. However, there was no significant relationship between pupal mass and temperature for larvae reared on diatoms.
4. The combined effects of food quality and thermal environment on growth of the midge P. richardsoni are significantly different from the independent effects of diet and temperature. Interactive effects of food quality and temperature may influence the contribution of certain aquatic habitats (algal mats) to invertebrate secondary production.  相似文献

Daily food consumption and alimentary canal evacuation rates for common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., were estimated at 4-week intervals from April to October 1979. Both the rate of food evacuation and its relationship to temperature were described by an exponential function. Gut evacuation rates ranged from 6.0% of gut contents per hour at 9°C to 32.7% h−1 at 26.5°C. Temperature accounted for 72–91% of the variation in gut evacuation rate among months. Daily food consumption varied from a low of 3.87 mg g−1 of fish wet wt per day in April at 14°C (0.39% of wet body wt) to a high of 40.75 mg g−1 (4.08%) in August at 26.5°C. Although a greater quantity of food appeared to be consumed during the morning in spring and early summer and a greater amount in the evening after July, there was not a statistically significant time of day for peak feeding activity. The field method described here seemed to provide reasonable estimates of food consumption compared with other field and laboratory studies.  相似文献

Aims:  This study evaluated the effect of temperature (0–38°C) and water activity ( a w: 0·87–0·99) on the lag phase prior to germination and the percentage of germination over time for Monilinia laxa , Monilinia fructicola and Monilinia fructigena .
Methods and Results:  More than 80% of viable conidia germinated at 25°C and 0·99 a w within 2 h for M. fructicola and M. fructigena and 4 h for M. laxa . There was no germination at 38°C, and all three Monilinia spp. germinated at 0°C. At the lowest a w (0·87), none of the Monilinia spp. was able to germinate at any of the incubation temperatures studied. Whereas at 0·90 a w, conidia were only able to germinate at 15, 25 and 30°C for the three species studied, except for M. fructicola at 15°C. In contrast, at 0·95, 0·97 and 0·99 a w, germination occurred at all studied temperatures less 38°C. Generally, the lag phase was longer at low levels of a w (0·90–095), and differences were more evident as temperatures were far from the optimum (0–5°C).
Conclusions:  Germination and lag phase period were markedly influenced by temperature and a w, and in general when conditions of temperature and a w were suboptimal, the lag phase was longer and the percentage of germination was lower.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  Knowledge of the germination requirements of this fungus is important in order to understand their behaviour in natural situations and to provide baseline data required for the construction of new prediction models. Our study might be used to develop a predictive model to understand and control the disease caused by Monilinia spp.  相似文献

The reasons for the decline in net CO2 assimilation ( A ) above its thermal optimum are controversial. We tested the hypothesis that increasing the ratio of Rubisco activase to Rubisco catalytic site concentration would increase the activation state of Rubisco at high temperatures. We measured photosynthetic gas exchange, in vivo electron transport ( J ) and the activation state of Rubisco between 15 and 45 °C, at 38 and 76 Pa ambient CO2, in wild-type (WT) and anti- rbc S tobacco. The Rubisco content of the anti- rbc S lines was 30% (S7-1) or 6% (S7-2) of WT, but activase levels were the same in the three genotypes. Anti- rbc S plants had lower A than WT at all temperatures, but had a similar thermal optimum for photosynthesis as WT at both CO2 levels. In WT plants, Rubisco was fully activated at 32 °C, but the activation state declined to 64% at 42 °C. By contrast, the activation state of Rubisco was above 90% in the S7-1 line, between 15 and 42 °C. Both A and J declined about 20% from T opt to the highest measurement temperatures in WT and the S7-1 line, but this was fully reversed after a 20 min recovery at 35 °C. At 76 Pa CO2, predicted rates of RuBP regeneration-limited photosynthesis corresponded with measured A in WT tobacco at all temperatures, and in S7-1 tobacco above 40 °C. Our observations are consistent with the hypothesis that the high temperature decline in A in the WT is because of an RuBP regeneration limitation, rather than the capacity of Rubisco activase to maintain high Rubisco activation state.  相似文献

We tested the hypotheses that relative activity of the less efficient alternative oxidase (AOX) path changes with diurnal temperature changes, and thus changes carbon use efficiency with temperature. The activities of the alternative and cytochrome oxidase (COX) paths in plant tissues of three species were determined by measuring 18O/16O discrimination and total respiration from 17 to 36 °C. A new, more accurate method for calculating oxygen uptake rate from the mass spectrometry data was developed. Total carbon use efficiency was calculated from the ratio of respiratory heat and CO2 rates measured from 10 to 35 °C. Oxygen isotope discrimination (22.9 ± 0.4‰) and AOX participation were invariant with temperature in leaf tissue of Cucurbita pepo , Nicotiana sativa and Vicia faba , thus falsifying the first part of the hypothesis. Stress responses of respiration at the temperature extremes limited the range for which carbon use efficiency could be accurately measured to 15–30 °C in N. sativa , to 10–25 °C in C. pepo and to 20–30 °C in V. faba . Carbon-use efficiency was invariant at these temperatures in these species, demonstrating that changes in other pathways that would vary carbon-use efficiency were also invariant with temperature.  相似文献
