In Lake Wujka, a shallow, polymictic Antarctic lake situated at 15 m from the seashore, several yearly cohorts occur of the copepod Boeckella poppei and one of the fairy shrimp Branchinecta gaini. There is circumstantial evidence that the two species compete for food, and perhaps adult fairy shrimp feed on the nauplii of the copepod. Both species are positively influenced by a measure of salinity. However, when autumn storms massively sweep seawater into the lake, all fairy shrimp are wiped out; no hatching occurs until next spring. In B. poppei, some nauplii and copepodites survive or hatch after the salt flows out of the lake. This is an advantage to the copepod that may balance its coexistence with the shrimp. Its cycle is, however, aborted by the freezing of the lake. In contrast to many other Antarctic lakes, the life cycle of the crustaceans is therefore controlled by salinity rather than freezing.  相似文献

The morphology of the female ovisac of the fairy shrimp Artemiopsis stefanssoni Johansen, 1921, is analysed by SEM. SEM observations reveal the existence of a genital opening located ventrally, but anterior to the area where the genital pore is normally situated. Ornamented frontal knobs resembling those on the second antennae of males of Artemia were also found in Artemiopsismales, and account for its particular mating behaviour.  相似文献

The oxygen consumption (routine rate) of Branchinella kugenumaensis, inhabiting tropical astatic ponds is measured at 28°C. Two distinct trends are observed in the oxygen consumption by this fairy shrimp; young, immature animals have a higher rate than the older, sexually mature animals. Branchinella kugenumaensis falls under the intermediate group of Bertalanffy, where respiration falls between the respiration surface proportional and the respiration weight proportional metabolism.  相似文献

A new species of fairy shrimp, Streptocephalus siamensis n. sp., is described from five temporary pools in Suphan Buri and Kanchana Buri Provinces, central Thailand. It sometimes co‐occurs with its congener, S. sirindhornae . This new species belongs to the subgenus Parastreptocephalus which is defined by bearing tetrahedral cysts. This is the third anostracan species reported from Thailand. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Isolated rock pools in the US desert southwest often develop dense populations of a lithophilic species of the rotifer Hexarthra. I hypothesized that rotifers persist in these isolated ponds due to the absence of either competition with or predation by potentially sympatric crustaceans, especially anostracans. I tested the latter idea with laboratory and field experiments, in each case exposing rotifers to adult fairy shrimp (Branchinecta mackini, the dominant anostracan in this region in winter ponds) in 200 ml microcosms. In␣most cases individual female fairy shrimp had distinct negative effects on rotifer suspensions due to direct predatory consumption of the smaller animals. Estimated effective water processing rates ranged from ca. 50 to over 300 ml ind−1 h−1 and rotifer consumption rates by female B. mackini were between 280 and > 600 Hexarthra consumed per individual predator per hour. Male B. mackini never significantly reduced rotifer numbers in either laboratory or field microcosms. The results indicate that, while perhaps not the sole determinant of rotifer distribution in these ephemeral pools, fairy shrimp predation can have a strong negative influence on natural Hexarthra populations.  相似文献

Freshwater fairy shrimp that live in episodically filled rainpools are obligate bisexual animals that produce drought-resistant, encapsulated embryos called cysts. A fraction of these hatches upon each inundation, a bet-hedging strategy, and the resulting larvae grow in a concerted manner, forming a cohort. Here, we show that in the Sudan fairy shrimp, Streptocephalus proboscideus, about one-third of the cysts hatches shortly after being released from the brood-sac, without intervening period of drought. However, as long as the adult population overshoots a density of about one specimen per litre, the emerging nauplii are cannibalized by their parents. At such a density and above it, fairy shrimp filter the whole pond volume in less than 24h and since it takes about the same amount of time for first-instar nauplii to moult to an immune size, they are all consumed. In addition to being auto-regulatory, this behaviour is adaptive: animals fed their own nauplii on top of an algal diet showed a 30% increase in reproductive output, and an increase in somatic growth rate. This allocation almost quantitatively recouped the loss of inclusive fitness to cannibalism. In contrast, hatching percentages of cysts obtained from animals fed this nauplii-supplement were the same as in algal-fed animals, such that their bet-hedging strategy remains intact and is carried forward to the next generation.  相似文献

Individuals of the fairy shrimp, Branchinecta longiantenna, were subjected to 5 concentrations (0.1 to 15 mg l–1) of Pb in diluted habitat water at 13 °C. Lead concentrations (mg kg–1 wet weight) in the animals were determined at 2-day intervals by digestion in nitric acid followed by atomic absorption analysis. The shrimp were also subjected to 0.1 mg l–1 media of Cd and Zn, separately.Uptake rates by the fairy shrimp for the three metal ions at 0.1 mg l–1 were: 0.111, 0.0885, and 0.0460 mg kg–1 day–1 for Zn, Pb, and Cd, respectively. After 2 days in 1.0 mg l–1 Cd or Zn, the animals expired; but they surviced for 8 days in a 10 mg l–1 Pb medium and for 2 days in 25 mg l–1 Pb. Lead uptake demonstrated a linear dependence on the Pb concentration in the media.Shrimp survived at much higher tissue accumulations of Pb compared to Zn and Cd. Estimated lethal doses were 20, 1.2–2.4, and 0.4–1.4 mg kg–1 wet weight for Pb, Zn, and Cd, respectively. Pb was found to be at much lower concentration than Cd or Zn in the natural pond water but between Cd and Zn levels in the sediment. Thus Cd and Zn probably present a greater threat to B. longiantenna than Pb, although Pb may be in higher concentration in the environment.Contribution 47, Laboratory of Ecology, The Claremont Colleges, Claremont, CA 91711, USA. During a two-year investigation of freshwater microcrustaceans in Thailand, an undescribed species of fairy shrimp of the genus Branchinella Sayce, 1903 in the family Thamnocephalidae, was discovered. This is the first record of the genus and the family from Southeast Asia and the second anostracan reported from Thailand. The new species, Branchinella thailandensis n. sp. appears to be morphologically intermediate between B. kugenumaensis (Ishikawa, 1895) from Japan and east China, and B. madurai Raj, 1951 from India and Pakistan. B. thailandensis n. sp. was collected from several temporary ponds in 11 provinces of the northeast and the central Thailand, often co-occurring with Streptocephalus sirindhornae Sanoamuang, Murugan, Weekers & Dumont, 2000.  相似文献

Northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) is targeted by commercial fisheries, but is also an important prey in the marine food web. In this study, stomach content data were used to study predation on shrimp by three gadoid species, cod (Gadus morhua), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) and whiting (Merlangius merlangus), in six inshore areas around Iceland. The results showed that shrimp was more important in the diet of cod compared with the other two predators. However, the overall predation pressure was similar for cod and haddock due to the high abundance of haddock. Therefore, even though shrimp is not the primary source of food for haddock, this species can have a substantial effect on shrimp stocks when haddock abundance is high. In addition, while cod and haddock did not select for any particular size of shrimp, whiting seemed to preferentially target juvenile shrimp. The results suggest that due to the overall effects of these three predators on shrimp stocks, gadoids need to be included in the management of shrimp stocks as predation is one of the major drivers in the development of this important prey stock.  相似文献

In temporary aquatic habitats, permanence and the severe disturbance associated with desiccation are strong selective agents expected to lead to differentiation in life history strategies in populations experiencing different disturbance regimes. Besides optimal timing of hatching of dormant life stages, maturation and reproduction, pool inhabitants also benefit from the acquisition of reliable cues for the quality of the ambient environment. We investigated whether hatching patterns, life history characteristics and egg bank size of Branchipodopsis fairy shrimp (Branchiopoda, Anostraca) inhabiting a cluster of temporary rock pools in South Africa reflect variation in habitat stability and hatching cues. Long-term hydrological variation was used to select pools along a gradient of habitat stability. Initial conductivity was a good indicator for the length of inundations. No hatching occurred under elevated conductivities, which may present a mechanism to avoid abortive hatching. Egg bank size was unaffected by habitat size or habitat stability but instead was related to cover by a protective sheet of dry aquatic vegetation, which presumably counteracts egg bank erosion by wind when pools are dry. Life history but not hatching phenology reflected some aspects of habitat stability. Fairy shrimp populations in ephemeral pools started reproduction earlier than populations in more stable habitats. Additional common garden or transplant experiments, however, will be required to assess the relative importance of environmental and genetic components in explaining the observed variation and acquire more insight into the trade-offs that lie at the base of the evolution of life history strategies along the pond permanence gradient.  相似文献

The effects of an increase in the codend mesh size from 44 to 56 and 80 mm on size selectivity of the two by‐catch species (the European hake Merluccius merlucius and the tub gurnard Trigla lucerna) commonly captured in the shrimp fishery in the Sea of Marmara, were evaluated. The parameters of the logistic selectivity model were estimated by maximum likelihood. Length at 50% retention, L50, was found to increase with mesh size for both species. The L50 values of 44, 56 and 80 mm were, respectively, 19.8, 21.5 and 33.4 cm for European hake, 17.9, 17.7 and 25.6 cm for tub gurnard. The main conclusions are that 44 mm and 56 mm diamond mesh codends retain a considerable amount of undersized hake and tub gurnard as by‐catch in the shrimp fishery. With 80 mm mesh size codend, most juvenile European hake are released. For the tub gurnard, however, even this mesh size does not provide a good enough selection. From the biological point of view, it is concluded that the legal 44 mm diamond mesh codend does not provide satisfactory selection for European hake and the tub‐gurnard in trawl fisheries of the Sea of Marmara.  相似文献

Summary This study investigated the proximate basis of bimodally-distributed, environmentally-induced variation that occurs in natural populations of spade-foot toad tadpoles (Scaphiopus multiplicatus). Most individuals in most populations occur as a small, slowly-developing omnivore morph. In some of these same populations, a varying number of individuals occur as a large, rapidly-developing carnivore morph (Pfennig 1989). Censuses of 37 different natural ponds revealed that the frequency of the faster-developing carnivore morph correlated significantly positively with fairy shrimp density (their chief prey) and pond drying rate. By simultaneously varying two diet components and pond drying regime in artificial pools I found that only fairy shrimp density significantly affected the proportion of carnivores. Separate experiments established that the extent to which tadpoles developed the carnivore morphology correlated with shrimp density, and that morph determination depended on the ingestion of shrimp, not simply their presence. If a critical number of shrimp were ingested, the tadpole developed into a carnivore; if not, the tadpole developed by default into an omnivore. Thus a single cue — shrimp ingestion — triggers alternative ontogenetic trajectories. Using shrimp density to induce morph differentiation enables tadpoles to respond to their environment adaptively as shrimp are most abundant in highly ephemeral ponds, where the faster developing carnivores are favored.  相似文献

Two micronized waste products were evaluated in a closed recirculation system for their suitability to replace a costly die of live algae in the culture of the Sudanese fairy shrimp,Streptocephalus proboscideus. The test population was kept at a density of 50 individuals 1–1 (sex ratio:1/1). An agricultural waste product (YM20; mixture of pea and corn), and an industrial waste product (POME; Palm Oil Mill Effluent) were fed at two regimes: 0.1 and 0.2mg DW animal–1 h–1. The microalgaSelenastrum capricornutum, used as a reference diet at a density of 2.0±0.82 × 105 cells ml–1, proved adequate in preliminary screening experiments. The effect of the diets and feeding regimes on selected biological variables and water quality were followed by weekly observations and measurements. Results in terms of growth (=increase in length), cyst production, and mortality were more successful when animals were supplied high densities of YM20 than in all other treatments: mean brood size was 155±6 cysts with a maximum of 266. Length after 6 weeks about 2 cm while this ranged between1.4–1.7 cm for the other treatments. Weekly mortality rate was comparable under high food conditions. Mortality rate gradually increased from 5% in the first week to 15% in the last week. Water quality, especially nitriate concentration (measured as NO2-N), was slightly better in the dry food fed than in the algae fed cultures. Present results are promising for large-scale culturing ofS. proboscideus in a cost-effective way by making use of agro-industrial waste products.  相似文献

Summary Facultative paedomorphosis in salamanders occurs when larvae respond to varying environmental conditions by either metamorphosing into terrestrial metamorphic adults or retaining their larval morphology to become sexually mature paedomorphic adults. Several hypotheses have been proposed for the evolutionary maintenance of this environmentally induced dimorphism, but few data are available to assess them adequately. We studied a montane population of the tiger salamander,Ambystoma tigrinum nebulosum, and measured the adult growth rate and body condition across three growing seasons to assess the relative costs and benefits of each morph. Metamorphic adults grew more than paedomorphic adults in terms of snout—vent length across years and in weight within years. Dietary analyses and foraging experiments revealed some of the proximate factors that may underlie these differential growth patterns. Across all prey, metamorphs had significantly higher biomass and calories per stomach sample than paedomorphs. Metamorphic diets primarily consisted of the fairy shrimpBranchinecta coloradensis, whereas paedomorphic diets contained a variety of benthic and terrestrial invertebrates. Foraging experiments revealed that both morphs are more successful at capturing fairy shrimp relative to other prey types and both show high electivity toward this prey. However, fairy shrimp occurred only in non-permanent ponds and thus are inaccessible to paedomorphs, which can survive only in permanent ponds. Paedomorphs also experience higher levels of intraspecific competition with large larvae in permanent ponds than metamorphs do in non-permanent ponds. Thus, metamorphs obtain a growth advantage over paedomorphs by foraging in non-permanent ponds that contain fairy shrimp and have reduced intraspecific competition. These results suggest that paedomorphs should have decreased fitness relative to metamorphs, primarily because metamorphs can move into the best habitats for growth. The net fitness effect of morph-specific differences in dispersal depend on whether there are trade-offs with other life history traits. Nonetheless, because the relative benefit of metamorph dispersal will change with environmental conditions in permanent ponds and the surrounding habitat, the relative fitness payoff to each morph should track changes in the environment. Thus, facultative paedomorphosis may be maintained in part by variable, environmentally-specific fitness payoffs to each morph.  相似文献

We examined the potential utility of museum specimens as a source for genetic analysis of fairy shrimp. Because of loss of their vernal pool habitat, some fairy shrimp (including Branchinecta sandiegonensis and Branchinecta lynchi) are listed as threatened or endangered in Southern California by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. Management of those species requires extensive population genetics studies and the resolution of important genetic complexity (e.g. possible hybridization between endangered and non-endangered species). Regulations mandating deposition of specimens of listed species have resulted in thousands of specimens accessioned into the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County that have been preserved in a variety of solutions. We subsampled those specimens, as well as other Anostraca with known collection and preservation histories, to test their potential for genetic analysis by attempting DNA extraction and amplification for mt16SrDNA. Fixation and preservation in not denatured ethanol had a far greater sequencing success rate than other (and unknown) fixatives and preservatives. To maximize scientific value we recommend field preservation in 95% not denatured ethanol (or, if pure ethanol is unavailable, high-proof drinking spirits, e.g. Everclear™, or 151 proof white rum), followed by storage in 95% not denatured ethanol.  相似文献

The protein pattern of haemolymph and body tissues of the freshwater fairy shrimp Streptocephalus dichotomus has been investigated in both sexes, using polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis. The electropherograms of four developmental stages show variations in number and intensities of protein fractions. In Stage III, two female-specific proteins of glycolipoprotein nature appear. This stage corresponds to maturity: females begin to possess mature oocytes in the ovary. These two vitellogenic proteins are well represented in the female haemolymph, ovary and freshly laid eggs, but are absent in the male haemolymph. A heterosynthetic mode of yolk formation is thus evident in this anostracan. The two sex-limited proteins are only faintly represented in shelled eggs, suggesting an early utilization of these compounds in embryogenesis.  相似文献

The size selectivity of alternative codends for nylon shrimp and yellow squat lobster was studied off the Chilean coast using the covered codend technique. Various mesh sizes (47 and 63 mm mesh opening) and shapes (diamond and square) in the codends were used. For both species, substituting the DM47 codend with the DM63 codend significantly increased 50% retention length (l50). The change of diamond (DM47) to square mesh (SM47) had a positive effect in size selectivity for nylon shrimp. For yellow squat lobster, no significant effect was observed when changing the diamond (DM63) to square mesh (SM63). Selectivity data were modeled by considering explanatory variables such as ‘codend catch weight’ and ‘vessel’. Increases in the catch significantly reduced the l50 for both species whereas the vessel factor was not significant. Finally, using the length at first maturity as a reference value, the authors concluded that the DM47 codend failed to protect the immature portion of either stock, thus the DM63 codend is recommended.  相似文献

Polyphenism is the expression of multiple, discrete phenotypes from one genotype, and understanding the environmental factors that trigger development of alternative phenotypes is a critical step toward understanding the evolution of polyphenism and its developmental control. While much is known about the ecology of the well-known carnivore/omnivore polyphenism in spadefoot toad tadpoles, the environmental cues for the development of the specialized carnivore phenotype are not completely clear. We examined 27 different experimental treatments in two spadefoot toad species and used over 1,000 tadpoles in an attempt to elucidate those cues. While only 44 carnivores developed in these treatments, they were concentrated at cooler water temperatures and a diet that included fairy shrimp. However, while a diet of fairy shrimp promoted carnivore development, it was not necessary for inducing carnivore development at lower and intermediate water temperatures. Evidence also suggested a role for social inhibition that limited the proportion of interacting tadpoles that become carnivores. Tadpoles of Spea multiplicata grew larger at cooler temperatures and larger when their diets included fairy shrimp, whereas tadpoles of S. bombifrons grew larger at warmer temperatures and when their diets did not include fairy shrimp. These results indicate that carnivore induction can occur through different cues and that our current model for carnivore development is too limited. Finally, we argue that the carnivore/omnivore spadefoot system is neither a polyphenism nor a polymorphism but is a continuously distributed plasticity.  相似文献

Maturation to adulthood and successful reproduction in the Antarctic fairy shrimp, Branchinecta gaini, must be completed within a physiologically challenging temporal window of ca. 2.5 months in the southern Antarctic Peninsula. Although adults show considerable metabolic opportunism at positive temperatures, little is known of their tolerance of two physiological insults potentially typical to pool life in the maritime Antarctic: sub-zero temperatures and salinity. B. gaini are freeze-avoiding crustaceans with temperatures of crystallisation (T cs) of −5°C. No antifreeze proteins were detected in the haemolymph. Adults osmoregulate in relation to temperature, but rapid mortality in saline solutions of even low concentration, indicate they cannot osmoregulate in relation to salinity. Survival of ice encasement at temperatures above their T c was found to be pressure but not time dependent: at severe inoculative ice pressures, there was little immediate survival and none survived after 48 h below −2°C; at mild inoculative ice pressures, immediate survival was ca. 100% at −3°C, but <20% after 48 h. There was no significant difference in survival after 1 and 6 h encasement at −3°C. Observations of ventilation suggest that it is not low temperature per se, but ice that represents the primary cryo-stress, with ventilatory appendages physically handcuffed below the freezing point of pool water. Both sub-zero temperatures and salinity represent real physiological constraints on adult fairy shrimp.  相似文献
