The present study was conducted to evaluate the serum selenium levels in first-degree relatives of diabetic patients (FDR)
according to controls. Insulin resistance, serum lipid levels, inflammation markers, and blood pressure were also studied
in these patients. Serum levels of selenium in FDR were significantly lower than control group (74.65 ± 5.9 vs 88.7 ± 8.7 μg/dl,
p < 0.0001). HsCRP, HOMA-IR, insulin, homocysteine levels were significantly higher in FDR according to the control group (1.32 ± 0.9
vs 0.63 ± 0.4 mg/dL, p < 0.0001; 2.07 ± 0.84 vs 1.51 ± 0.69, p < 0.0001; 9.26 ± 3.8 vs 6.8 ± 2.98 μU/MI, p < 0.0001; 15.7 ± 7.4 vs 11.5 ± 5.1 μmol/L, p < 0.0001, respectively). There was significant correlation between selenium levels and hsCRP (r = − 0.450, p < 0.0001). There was also weak significant correlation also between HOMA-IR and selenium levels (r = −0.227, p = 0.003). There was a correlation between systolic blood pressure and BMI (r = 0.365, p < 0.0001). But there was no correlation between selenium levels and blood pressure or other parameters. HsCRP, HOMA-IR, homocysteine
levels in individuals with selenium levels < 80 μg/L (n = 78) was significantly higher than hsCRP HOMA-IR, homocysteine levels in individuals with selenium levels ≥ 80 (n = 91; 1.23 ± 0.98 vs 0.81 ± 0.76 mg/dL, p < 0.003; 1.99 ± 0.88 vs 1.64 ± 0.74, p < 0.005; 15.0 ± 7.6 vs 12.9 ± 5.7 μmol/L, p < 0.049, respectively). Trace elements such as Zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and selenium (Se) are essential for male fertility. The fertilizing
capacity of most animals reduced with advancing age. The objective of the present work was to determine the serum and testicular
levels of Zn, Cu, and Se in young (10 months old) and old (30 months old) rabbits. Blood and testicular samples were obtained
from rabbits after their slaughter. All samples were digested by concentrated acids and analyzed for trace elements by flame
emission atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The results showed that serum Zn and Cu were lower in old rabbits than young
(P < 0.01). Serum Se was higher in old than young rabbits (P < 0.05). Testicular Cu and Se were significantly lower in old than young rabbits (P < 0.01). However, Zn level was higher in old compared to young rabbits (P < 0.01). The serum Zn and Se were higher than the testicular levels (P < 0.01). The testicular Cu in both ages was higher than the serum level (P < 0.01), which suggest a very important role for Cu in the process of spermatogenesis in rabbits. 相似文献

Antibodies have different avidities that can be evaluated using modified enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) techniques. We determined levels and avidities of antibodies to light (NFL) and medium (NFM) subunits of neurofilaments and tau protein in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from 26 patients and anti-tau antibody levels and their avidities in 20 multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and 20 age- and sex-matched controls. Each sample was analyzed using both standard ELISA and also using a similar ELISA protocol with the addition of urea. The avidities of anti-neurocytoskeletal antibodies were higher in the CSF than those in serum (anti-NFL, p < 0.0001; anti-tau, p < 0.01; anti-NFM, n.s.). There was no relationship between avidities in serum and CSF for individual anti-neurocytoskeletal antibodies. We did not observe the relationship among the avidities of various anti-neurocytoskeletal antibodies. The avidities of anti-tau antibodies in the CSF were significantly higher in the MS patients than those in the controls (p < 0.0001). The study demonstrates the differences in avidities of CSF or serum neurocytoskeletal antibodies measured as the urea resistance by ELISA method. Avidity determination of anti-neurocytoskeletal antibodies could contribute to the evaluation of the immunological status of patients. 相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine the relationship of fluoride in drinking water to liver function in individuals living
in normal and seven endemic fluorosis areas of Punjab, India. The concentration of fluoride in drinking water of different
areas varied from 5.9 to 24.5 mg/L. Study group consisted of 705 patients in the age group between 20 and 60 years (mean age
of 39.35 ± 11.27) affected with osteodental fluorosis were compared with 300 age- and sex-matched controls (with mean age
of 35.28 ± 8.25 years). Biochemical data was analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with post hoc Tukey–Kramer and
Bonferroni multiple comparison tests. The relationship between hepatic enzymes was calculated by Pearson’s correlation and
linear regression. The results revealed significantly (P < 0.001) higher concentration of serum fluoride in patients when compared to control. The mean activities of cyclic adenosine
monophosphate (AMP), alkaline phosphatase (ALKP), acid phosphatase (ACP), aspartate aminotransaminase (AST), and alanine aminotransaminase
(ALT) were significantly (P < 0.05–0.001) elevated in patients from all fluoride areas. ANOVA with post hoc Turkey–Kramer and Bonferroni multiple comparison
test demonstrated a significant (P < 0.0001) variance in the activities of cAMP, ALKP, ACP, AST, and ALT in fluorotic patients, with elevation in water fluoride
levels. Maximum elevation of 196.14% (ACP), 99.31% (cyclic adenosine monophosphate; cAMP), 72.08% (ALT), 60.14% (AST), and
least 21.35% (ALKP) was recorded in patients exposed to 24.5 mg/L fluoride in drinking water. There was positive correlation
between water fluoride, serum fluoride and AST (r = 0.77, 0.91), ALT (r = 0.82, 0.90), ALKP (r = 0.88, 0.97), and ACP (r = 0.74, 0.85). Pearson’s correlation demonstrated highly significant (P < 0.05) positive relationship between water fluoride and cAMP (regression equation: Y = 0.9807 ×+ 22.081 Y = 0.9807 \times + 22.081 , = 0.84; r = 0.92, P < 0.05). The increased levels of transaminases in fluorotic patients suggest alteration in liver functions. The level of
alkaline and acid phosphatase was increased during fluoride intoxication which is also an early marker of hepatic cell damage
because of its specificity and catalytic activity. The elevated levels of enzymes are reflective of bone disorders, which
are characterized by increased osteoblastic activity. There levels increased several times if cellular damage occurs in the
liver. The results suggest that fluoride exposure intensifies the activities of hepatic function enzymes in osteofluorosis. 相似文献

Chromium deficiency is associated with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and dyslipidemia. Hence, the objective of the current
study was to investigate chromium status among Saudi men with and without established cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its
relationship to glucose tolerance, lipid profile and other established CVD risk factors. We measured serum and urine chromium
concentrations, fasted lipid profile, plasma glucose, and serum lipid peroxide in 130 Saudi men with an established history
of myocardial infarction and 130 age-matched controls without established CVD. Patients with established CVD had higher serum
triglycerides (p < 0.05) and plasma glucose (p < 0.0001) and lower serum and urinary chromium concentrations (p < 0.0001) than controls. Serum chromium was inversely correlated with plasma glucose among cases and controls (r = −0.189, p < 0.05 and r = −0.354, p < 0.00001, respectively). Plasma glucose (OR 1.127, CI 1.0–1.269, p < 0.05), serum chromium (OR 0.99, CI 0.985–0.995, p < 0.0001), and urinary chromium (OR 0.988, CI 0.981–0.995, p < 0.001) were independently associated with the presence of established coronary disease applying this model. While chromium
metabolism appears to be altered in individuals with CVD, it is unclear whether chromium supplementation would be effective
in CVD prevention among patients with IGT. This would need to be tested in long-term outcome trials. 相似文献

T lymphocytes and immunoregulatory cytokines play an important role in the host response to hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Zinc is required for a wide spectrum of immune functions, including T-cell activity. To determine the clinical significance of the cytokines sIL-2R, IL-6, TGF-β1, neopterin, and of zinc in chronic heptatitis C virus (HCV) infection, we investigated their concentrations in the serum of 16 patients with chronic HCV infection before, during and at the end of therapy with interferon (IFN) α (Roferon A), and after 6 months follow-up. Elevated concentrations of sIL-2R, IL-6, TGF-β1, and neopterin were found in the serum of all patients prior to therapy, as compared to healthy controls. sIL-2R patterns differed in responders and non-responders. While the mean concentration of sIL-2R (335.75 pg/ml) before therapy was about 40% higher in complete responders (n=4) than in controls (272.20 pg/ml), the mean concentration in non-responders (n=6) was 4-fold higher than in controls (1153.33 pg/ml). During therapy, sIL-2R levels in responders decreased by about 40%. Mean IL-6 concentrations in both complete and partial responders (n=6) decreased continuously during treatment, while mean concentrations in non-responders decreased for only a short time, and increased again after cessation of therapy. Mean levels of TGF-β1 behaved similarly to those of IL-6. Only negligible differences in mean neopterin levels were found between responders and non-responders over the entire observation time. The mean serum zinc concentrations slightly decreased in all 3 patient groups, the greatest reduction occurring in 3 of the 4 responders. The present findings underscore the importance of the immune system in the pathogenesis of chronic HCV infection. Serum sIL-2R levels may be used as a serological marker of outcome following IFN-α treatment. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of oral iron supplementation on hematological and iron metabolism in elite
soccer players. Thirty-five members of the Real Zaragoza SAD soccer team took part in this study: group A (GA, n = 24; Spanish Premier League) took an oral iron supplement of 80 mg day−1 for 3 weeks, and group B (GB, n = 11; Spanish Third Division League) did not receive any supplementation. In GA, the parameters were measured before and
after giving the iron supplements, while in GB, measurements were only made at the time of collecting the second set of data
from GA. After supplementation, GA showed an increase in serum iron (SI) (P < 0.05), serum ferritin (Ftn) (P < 0.01), and transferrin saturation (Sat) (P < 0.01) with respect to the basal values. In addition, GA showed higher values of hematocrit (P < 0.01), mean corpuscular volume (P < 0.01), Ftn (P < 0.01), and Sat (P < 0.01) than GB. No significant differences were found in any other parameters. More specifically, a higher percentage of
players had Ftn levels above upper limits in GA vs. GB (P < 0.05), and GB had a higher incidence of Ftn below lower limits with respect to subjects in GA (P < 0.01). Further, after treatment, 58.3% of GA had >800 mg of SI, while all players in GB presented levels below the lower
limits. In conclusion, iron supplementation with 80 mg·day−1 for 3 weeks, before the start of the soccer season, can be recommended for elite soccer players. 相似文献

To determine if decreased systemic oxygen (O2) extraction contributes to the exercise limit in severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), 40 consecutive incremental
cycle ergometer exercise tests performed by such patients, from which a “log-log” lactate threshold (LT) was identified, were
compared to those of 8 patients with left ventricular failure (LVF) and 10 normal controls. Pulmonary gas exchange and minute
ventilation were measured continuously and arterial blood gas tensions, pH, and lactate concentrations were sampled each minute.
Cardiac output (Q˙
c) was measured by first-pass radionuclide ventriculography. The systemic O2 extraction ratio (O2ER) was calculated as arterial − mixed venous O2 content difference (C
aO2 − C
vO2)/C
aO2. Peak exercise O2 uptake (V˙O2peak) was markedly reduced in both COPD and LVF [41 (3) and 42 (3)% predicted, respectively], compared to controls [89 (2)% predicted,
P < 0.0001 for each]. Similarly, the LT occurred at a low percentage of predicted maximal oxygen consumption in both COPD and
LVF [25 (2) and 27 (3)%] compared to normals [46 (3)%, P < 0.0001 for each]. The systemic O2ER at peak exercise was severely reduced in COPD [0.36 (0.02)] compared to the other groups [P < 0.0001 for each], for whom it was nearly identical [0.58 (0.03) vs 0.63 (0.04), LVF vs control, P > 0.05]. In the COPD group, an early LT correlated with reduced systemic O2ER at peak exercise (r = 0.64, P < 0.0001), but not with any index of systemic O2 delivery. These data suggest that lactic acidemia during exercise in patients with severe COPD is better related to abnormal
systemic O2 extraction than to its delivery and contributes to the exercise limit.

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) plays an important role in regulation of intestinal inflammatory processes in inflammatory bowel disease
(IBD). The levels of IL-6 in media from cultured biopsy samples were determined by ELISA in 14 Crohn’s disease (CD) patients,
17 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), and 24 healthy controls in terminal ileum, cecum, and rectum. Results were confirmed
by measuring mRNA expression in selected patients. In CD patients, there were increased levels of IL-6 (expressed in picograms
per milligram of biopsy tissue mass) in terminal ileum compared with controls (median, 617 vs. 90.4; p < 0.001). High IL-6 levels were found in the rectum of CD patients with active disease but normal endoscopic findings (791
vs. 131; p < 0.05). This result was confirmed by mRNA expression. There was a substantial increase of IL-6 levels in cultured cecal
(median, 327 vs. 94.0; p < 0.001) and rectal mucosa (median, 282 vs.131; p < 0.05) but not in ileal mucosa of UC patients. In conclusion, IL-6 production was higher in IBD patients than in controls;
it correlated with disease activity and varied among different intestinal segments. In clinically active CD patients without
rectal involvement, high IL-6 levels in cultured rectal mucosa suggest immune stimulation even in the absence of macroscopic
