Excessive synchronization of neurons in cerebral cortex is believed to play a crucial role in the emergence of neuropsychological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy and essential tremor. This study, by constructing a modular neuronal network with modified Oja’s learning rule, explores how to eliminate the pathological synchronized rhythm of interacted busting neurons numerically. When all neurons in the modular neuronal network are strongly synchronous within a specific range of coupling strength, the result reveals that synaptic plasticity with large learning rate can suppress bursting synchronization effectively. For the relative small learning rate not capable of suppressing synchronization, the technique of nonlinear delayed feedback control including differential feedback control and direct feedback control is further proposed to reduce the synchronized bursting state of coupled neurons. It is demonstrated that the two kinds of nonlinear feedback control can eliminate bursting synchronization significantly when the control parameters of feedback strength and feedback delay are appropriately tuned. For the former control technique, the control domain of effective synchronization suppression is similar to a semi-elliptical domain in the simulated parameter space of feedback strength and feedback delay, while for the latter one, the effective control domain is similar to a fan-shaped domain in the simulated parameter space.

We studied the synchronous behavior of two electrically-coupled model neurons as a function of the coupling strength when the individual neurons are tuned to different activity patterns that ranged from tonic firing via chaotic activity to burst discharges. We observe asynchronous and various synchronous states such as out-of-phase, in-phase and almost in-phase chaotic synchronization. The highest variety of synchronous states occurs at the transition from tonic firing to chaos where the highest coupling strength is also needed for in-phase synchronization which is, essentially, facilitated towards the bursting range. This demonstrates that tuning of the neuron’s internal dynamics can have significant impact on the synchronous states especially at the physiologically relevant tonic-to-bursting transitions.

Noise-induced complete synchronization and frequency synchronization in coupled spiking and bursting neurons are studied firstly. The effects of noise and coupling are discussed. It is found that bursting neurons are easier to achieve firing synchronization than spiking ones, which means that bursting activities are more important for information transfer in neuronal networks. Secondly, the effects of noise on firing synchronization in a noisy map neuronal network are presented. Noise-induced synchronization and temporal order are investigated by means of the firing rate function and the order index. Firing synchronization and temporal order of excitatory neurons can be greatly enhanced by subthreshold stimuli with resonance frequency. Finally, it is concluded that random perturbations play an important role in firing activities and temporal order in neuronal networks.

Thalamic neurons, which play important roles in the genesis of rhythmic activities of the brain, show various bursting behaviors, particularly modulated by complex thalamocortical feedback via cortical neurons. As a first step to explore this complex neural system and focus on the effects of the feedback on the bursting behavior, a simple loop structure delayed in time and scaled by a coupling strength is added to a recent mean-field model of bursting neurons. Depending on the coupling strength and delay time, the modeled neurons show two distinct response patterns: one entrained to the unperturbed bursting frequency of the neurons and one entrained to the resonant frequency of the loop structure. Transitions between these two patterns are explored in the model’s parameter space via extensive numerical simulations. It is found that at a fixed loop delay, there is a critical coupling strength at which the dominant response frequency switches from the unperturbed bursting frequency to the loop-induced one. Furthermore, alternating occurrence of these two response frequencies is observed when the delay varies at fixed coupling strength. The results demonstrate that bursting is coupled with feedback to yield new dynamics, which will provide insights into such effects in more complex neural systems.

The inhibitory synapse can induce synchronous behaviors different from the anti-phase synchronous behaviors, which have been reported in recent studies. In the present paper, synchronous behaviors are investigated in the motif model composed of reciprocal inhibitory coupled neurons with endogenous bursting and time delay. When coupling strength is weak, synchronous behavior appears at a single interval of time delay within a bursting period. When coupling strength is strong, multiple synchronous behaviors appear at different intervals of time delay within a bursting period. The different bursting patterns of synchronous behaviors, and time delays and coupling strengths that can induce the synchronous bursting patterns can be well interpreted by the dynamics of the endogenous bursting pattern of isolated neuron, which is acquired by the fast-slow dissection method, combined with the inhibitory coupling current. For an isolated neuron, when a negative impulsive current with suitable strength is applied at different phases of the bursting, multiple different bursting patterns can be induced. For a neuron in the motif, the inhibitory coupling current, of which the application time and strength is modulated by time delay and coupling strength, can cause single or multiple synchronous firing patterns like the negative impulsive current when time delay and coupling strength is suitable. The difference compared to the previously reported multiple synchronous behaviors that appear at time delays wider than a period of the endogenous firing is discussed. The results present novel examples of synchronous behaviors in the neuronal network with inhibitory synapses and provide a reasonable explanation.

This paper investigates the dependence of synchronization transitions of bursting oscillations on the information transmission delay over scale-free neuronal networks with attractive and repulsive coupling. It is shown that for both types of coupling, the delay always plays a subtle role in either promoting or impairing synchronization. In particular, depending on the inherent oscillation period of individual neurons, regions of irregular and regular propagating excitatory fronts appear intermittently as the delay increases. These delay-induced synchronization transitions are manifested as well-expressed minima in the measure for spatiotemporal synchrony. For attractive coupling, the minima appear at every integer multiple of the average oscillation period, while for the repulsive coupling, they appear at every odd multiple of the half of the average oscillation period. The obtained results are robust to the variations of the dynamics of individual neurons, the system size, and the neuronal firing type. Hence, they can be used to characterize attractively or repulsively coupled scale-free neuronal networks with delays.

In this paper we consider the Hopf bifurcation and synchronization in the two coupled Hindmarsh–Rose excitable systems with chemical coupling and time-delay. We surveyed the conditions for Hopf bifurcations by means of dynamical bifurcation analysis and numerical simulation. The results show that the coupled excitable systems with no delay have supercritical Hopf bifurcation, while the delayed system undergoes Hopf bifurcations at critical time delays when coupling strength lies in a particular region. We also investigated the effect of the delay on the transition of bursting synchronization in the coupled system. The results are helpful for us to better understand the dynamical properties of excitable systems and the biological mechanism of information encoding and cognitive activity.

Based on bifurcation analysis, the synchronization behaviors of two identical pancreatic β-cells connected by electrical and chemical coupling are investigated, respectively. Various firing patterns are produced in coupled cells when a single cell exhibits tonic spiking or square-wave bursting individually, irrespectively of what the cells are connected by electrical or chemical coupling. On the one hand, cells can burst synchronously for both weak electrical and chemical coupling when an isolated cell exhibits tonic spiking itself. In particular, for electrically coupled cells, under the variation of the coupling strength there exist complex transition processes of synchronous firing patterns such as “fold/limit cycle” type of bursting, then anti-phase continuous spiking, followed by the “fold/torus” type of bursting, and finally in-phase tonic spiking. On the other hand, it is shown that when the individual cell exhibits square-wave bursting, suitable coupling strength can make the electrically coupled system generate “fold/Hopf” bursting via “fold/fold” hysteresis loop; whereas, the chemically coupled cells generate “fold/subHopf” bursting. Especially, chemically coupled bursters can exhibit inverse period-adding bursting sequence. Fast–slow dynamics analysis is applied to explore the generation mechanism of these bursting oscillations. The above analysis of bursting types and the transition may provide us with better insight into understanding the role of coupling in the dynamic behaviors of pancreatic β-cells.
