Several studies have demonstrated intraspecific variation in fish gill size that relates to variation in dissolved oxygen (DO) availability across habitats. In Lake Nabugabo, East Africa, ecological change over the past 12 years has coincided with a shift in the distribution of introduced Nile perch such that a larger proportion of the population now inhabits waters in or near wetland ecotones where DO is lower than in open waters of the lake. In this study, we compared gill size of juvenile Nile perch between wetland and exposed (open-water) habitats of Lake Nabugabo in 2007, as well as between Nile perch collected in 1996 and 2007. For Nile perch of Lake Nabugabo [<20 cm total length (TL)], there was a significant habitat effect on some gill traits. In general, fish from wetland habitats were characterized by a longer total gill filament length and average gill filament length than conspecifics from exposed habitats. Nile perch collected from wetland areas in 2007 had significantly larger gills (total gill filament length) than Nile perch collected in 1996, but there was no difference detected between Nile perch collected from exposed sites in 2007 and conspecifics collected in 1996.  相似文献

In Lake Nabugabo, Uganda, a satellite of Lake Victoria, approximately 50% of the indigenous fishes disappeared from the open waters subsequent to the establishment of the introduced predatory Nile perch, Lates niloticus. This pattern is similar to the faunal loss experienced in the much larger Lake Victoria. Several of these species persisted in wetland refugia (e.g. ecotonal wetlands, swamp lagoons); however, deep swamp refugia (habitats lying well within the dense interior of fringing wetlands), are available only to a subset of the basin fauna with extreme tolerance to hypoxia. Although air-breathers are common in deep swamp refugia; we also documented a surprisingly high richness and abundance of non-air-breathing fishes. We describe several mechanisms that may facilitate survival in deep swamp refugia including high hemoglobin concentration, high hematocrit, large gill surface area and a low critical oxygen tension (P(c)). In addition, swamp-dwelling fishes showed lower PO(2) thresholds for onset of aquatic surface respiration than the lake-dwelling fishes. This suggests higher tolerance to hypoxia in the swamp fishes because they are able to withstand a lower oxygen tension before approaching the surface. We suggest that physiological refugia may be important in modulating the impact of Nile perch and indigenous fishes in the Lake Nabugabo region; this highlights the need to evaluate relative tolerance of introduced predators and indigenous prey to environmental stressors.  相似文献

A basic paradigm in behavioral ecology is that organisms expand their distribution as preferred sites become saturated with individuals that reduce the availability of resources (e.g., shelter, prey) on a per capita basis. Previous fish community studies at Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary have shown that juvenile Acadian redfish Sebastes fasciatus (<20cm total length; TL) were primarily associated with boulder reefs that have deep interstices amongst the boulders; and that redfish expanded their distribution to adjacent gravel habitats when local abundance on reefs was high. Multibeam and sidescan sonar surveys in Stellwagen Basin (primarily a cohesive mud seafloor) have shown that discrete small areas of the basin floor are composed of mud draped gravel and partially buried boulders. Linear video transects using remotely operated vehicles and a video/photographic equipped grab sampler across five of these sites in 1997 showed that exposed boulders do not have crevices along their lower margins and are surrounded by dense patches of cerianthid anemones, Cerianthus borealis. These anemone patches are not present on the surrounding mud seafloor. Video image data showed that late juvenile redfish (11–20cm TL) occurred on boulder reefs as well as in the dense cerianthid patches but not on unstructured mud habitat (without cerianthid anemones). Comparisons of boulder reef and cerianthid habitats in 1998 showed that early demersal phase (0-year) redfish (0–10cm TL) occurred only on reefs but late juveniles occurred both on the reefs and in dense cerianthid habitats. Adult size classes (>20cm TL) also occurred in dense cerianthid habitats. Two explanations for these distributions can be advanced. The simplest is that redfish use both boulder and cerianthid habitats on an encounter basis, regardless of habitat saturation or predation pressure. Alternatively, boulder reefs serve as recruitment habitats and cerianthid habitats serve as a conduit for redfish moving away from saturated boulder reef sites, essentially serving as elements of a 'redfish pump'.  相似文献

Resident Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, are widespread throughout the island of Newfoundland. This study examines aspects of the biology and spatial and temporal distributions of the charr of Gander Lake, the third largest in Newfoundland (surface area = 11320ha, maximum depth = 288m, mean depth = 105.4m). The deepest part of the lake is approximately 258m below sea level. The lake is well oxygenated from the surface to the bottom during all seasons. Sampling was conducted with Lundgren multiple-mesh experimental gillnets and baited hooks. There appears to be two morphs present, based on colour (dark and pale) and certain meristic characteristics. Dark charr were caught mainly in benthic nets (at depths from 1 to 100m inclusive) with only a few pelagic captures. Pale charr were caught only in benthic nets at depths between 20 and 100m inclusive. The maximum depth sampled was 196m, but there was no catch. There was a tendency for dark charr to be found in deeper, cooler water as the upper water column and inshore areas warmed during summer. There was no apparent trend in size of charr with depth sampled. Dark and pale charr both fed on benthic macroinvertebrates; sticklebacks were consumed only by dark charr and the importance of this prey item increased with size of predator. Zooplankton and surface food were not utilised by Gander Lake charr. Results of the study are compared with findings reported for other water bodies in Newfoundland and Labrador, North America, and Europe, particularly Loch Ness which has similarities in morphometry and trophic status to Gander Lake.  相似文献

Tiger sharks, Galeocerdo cuvier, are apex predators in a variety of nearshore ecosystems throughout the world. This study investigates the biology of tiger sharks in the shallow seagrass ecosystem of Shark Bay, Western Australia. Tiger sharks (n = 252) were the most commonly caught species (94%) compared to other large sharks. Tiger sharks ranged from 148–407cm TL. The overall sex ratio was biased towards females (1.8:1), but the sex ratio of mature animals (> 300cm TL) did not differ from 1:1. Contrary to previous accounts, tiger sharks were caught more often in all habitats during daylight hours than at night. Tiger shark catch rates were highly correlated with water temperature and were highest when water temperatures were above 19°C. The seasonal abundance of tiger sharks is correlated to both water temperature and the occurrence of their main prey: sea snakes and dugongs, Dugong dugon. Stomach contents analysis indicated that sea turtles and smaller elasmobranchs were also common prey. The importance of major seagrass grazers (dugongs and green sea turtles, Chelonia mydas) in the diet of tiger sharks suggests the possibility that these sharks are keystone predators in this ecosystem.  相似文献

Age and growth of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) from Lake Nabugabo and Lake Wamala, Uganda, were determined using cross-sectioned sagittal otoliths. Marginal-increment and edge analyses of Nile tilapia otoliths from Lake Nabugabo indicated formation of two annuli per 12-month period. Opaque zones associated with faster growth were observed between April and June and between September and December, coincident with the two rainy seasons of the year. Within both lakes, males were larger at age than females. Nile tilapia from Lake Nabugabo, however, had faster growth rates than Nile tilapia from Lake Wamala, and fish >3 years old from Lake Nabugabo were larger at age than those from Lake Wamala. Ages ranged from 0 to 8.0 years for Nile tilapia from Lake Nabugabo, and from 0.5 to 6.5 years for tilapia from Lake Wamala. Differences in the patterns of growth in Nile tilapia between lakes may reflect, at least in part, the relatively energy-rich omnivorous diet of Nile tilapia in Lake Nabugabo versus a phytoplanktivorous diet in Lake Wamala. Diet differences of Nile tilapia between the two lakes are ascribed to trophic changes in the lakes due to the introduction of Nile perch (Lates niloticus) into Lake Nabugabo but not Lake Wamala. Alternatively, the greater exploitation of Nile tilapia in Lake Nabugabo may have resulted in increased growth rates, whereas Nile tilapia in Lake Wamala may be subject to slower, density-dependent growth. Ninety four scalloped hammerhead sharks, Sphyrna lewini (53 females and 41 males) ranging in size from 121 to 321cm total length (TL), were collected from surface gillnetters operating off northeastern Brazil and throughout the southwestern equatorial Atlantic Ocean between January and December 1996. A common regression for TL and eviscerated weight (EW) was calculated as, logEW = –11.786 + 2.889 logTL. Females and males were categorised into reproductive stages (4 and 2, respectively) according to morphological changes in their gonads. Size at sexual maturity for females was estimated to be 240cm, while males appeared to mature at between 180 and 200cm. Gravid females had between 2 and 21 embryos or pups, varying in TL from 3 to 38cm. There was no relationship between maternal length and size of litter. Copulation and parturition appear to occur outside the sampled area and possibly closer to the coast. With the exception of slightly lower uterine and ovarian fecundities, the results support the few existing data on the reproductive cycle of S. lewini in other areas.  相似文献

Seasonal variation of denitrification rate in Lake Suwa sediment   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The seasonal variation of denitrification rate in sediments in the central station of Lake Suwa, Japan, was estimated by the acetylene-inhibition technique from March 20 to December 10, 1994. The denitrification rate ranged from 0 to 1800µmolNm–2day–1 and showed a distinct seasonal trend, i.e., relatively high rates in spring and winter, and low or negligible rates in summer. The denitrification rate was well correlated with NO3 concentration in overlying water, suggesting that NO3 in overlying water was the primary controlling factor for denitrification. The annual rate of denitrification was 0.15molNm–2year–1. Denitrification removed 5% of the annual nitrogen load from the lake, and this fraction was relatively small compared to the values reported for a variety of aquatic environments. In Lake Suwa, NO3 in the water column was depleted during summer, and this suppressed effective removal of nitrogen from the lake by denitrification.  相似文献

Black seabream, Acanthopagrus schlegeli, and Japanese seaperch, Lateolabrax japonicus, are important commercial species in the coastal waters of western Pacific Ocean, including Japan, Korea and China. In Hong Kong, larvae and juveniles of these two species occur in bays and estuaries during late winter and spring. This study reports on the ontogenetic changes in food habits in larvae and juveniles of these species in an artificial rocky shore area. Copepods and cladocerans were the most numerous food items for black seabream. There was a shift to larger and benthic prey as the fishes grew. Japanese seaperch <2.1cm fed predominantly on copepods and cladocerans, while larger prey were added as fish size increased. Japanese seaperch >6.0cm were piscivorous. Maximum prey width increased with fish standard length and mouth gape width in both species. Overall, black seabream showed greater diet breadth than did Japanese seaperch. In black seabream, diet breadth increased with fish size. In Japanese seaperch, diet breadth increased with size for fishes <4.0cm, then decreased as the fishes became piscivorous. Prey selectivity in black seabream was determined using information on prey availability in plankton samples. In general, preference was stronger for cypris larvae, Penilia avirostris and decapod larvae than for copepods and podonids. In recent years, overfishing and environmental degradation have led to the decline of fish populations in Tolo Harbour. Absence of fishes with empty gut indicates that inner Tolo Harbour is still an important nursery area for these two commercial species.  相似文献

The relationship between predator gape and prey consumption in laboratory-reared larva and field-caught early juvenile red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus, was investigated in light of the hypothesis that feeding success varies throughout the early life history intervals of marine fishes. We expected the feeding ability of red drum to be more strongly constrained by mouth gape in smaller fish and expected this ability to improve with gape size. To test this hypothesis, field-caught, early juvenile red drum were examined to determine the relationship between gape size and prey size consumed. In field-caught early juveniles, gape (height and width) and prey size consumed (length and width) increased linearly with standard length (SL); however, mean width of prey consumed was only 20–47% of gape width. Furthermore, when regressed on SL, gape width yielded a higher slope than prey width. To further test this hypothesis on less developed, pre-metamorphic fish, age-specific differences in gape, number of prey and size of prey consumed prior to metamorphosis were determined from laboratory-reared red drum larvae. Similar patterns were observed for gape height– and gape width–SL relationships in laboratory-reared red drum larvae. Size of consumed prey increased from three days from hatching (dfh) to 18dfh. The percentage of feeding larvae also increased from 3% at 3dfh to 97% at 18dfh. In both field-caught, early juvenile red drum and laboratory-reared larvae, there was little evidence that the size of prey consumed was constrained by mouth gape. It is hypothesized that besides gape size, the development of other features of the feeding mechanism (e.g., hyoid and opercular series) influences prey-capture performance prior to settlement in marine fishes.  相似文献

Ontogenetic changes in diet and jaw gape were compared between two indigenous populations of largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, to test the hypothesis that ecomorphology varies among broadly distributed fish populations. Two hundred seventy-two temperate (southwestern Michigan) M. salmoides and 265 subtropical (east-central Florida) conspecifics were analyzed for food habits and oral jaw gape height and width. Percent volumetric contributions of four functional prey categories (plankton, insect, crustacean, and fish) were compared among fish-size classes to determine if interval-specific differences in prey consumption existed between populations. Subtropical M. salmoides shifted from feeding on plankton and macroinvertebrates to fish by 20mm standard length (SL); and stopped consuming plankton by 29mm SL. Temperate largemouth bass did not become piscivorous until 37mm SL and continued utilizing plankton up to 69mm SL. Following the onset of piscivory, 100–260mm SL subtropical largemouth bass began utilizing more crustaceans than fish. In contrast, temperate M. salmoides consistently fed on fish following the onset of piscivory. Variations in food habits were associated with differences in gape size between temperate and subtropical populations. Temperate largemouth bass had significantly larger gape height (ANCOVA: F = 103.4; df = 1,536; p < 0.001) and width (ANCOVA: F = 47.0; df = 1,536; p < 0.001) than subtropical bass. Although piscivory is a well-known feature of M. salmoides, the ontogeny of piscivory may vary between populations. We hypothesize that interpopulation differences in jaw gape may be related to variations in prey-resource utilization.  相似文献

Gobies of the genus Elacatinus are regarded as the most specialised cleaner fishes in the western tropical Atlantic, yet there are no studies on these cleaners in the southern portion of West Atlantic. We studied the diversity of clients and the daily cleaning activity of the barber goby, Elacatinus figaro, on rocky reefs in southeastern Brazil (23–24°S). A total of 34 fish client species in 16 families were recorded over 484 cleaning events. The most frequent clients were damselfishes, Pomacentridae (37.9% of cleaning events) and grunts, Haemulidae (16.9%). Planktivores were the most frequently attended trophic category, and two species in that category accounted for about a half (44%) of the total cleaning events. Size of clients ranged 4.5–55cm and most individuals were medium-sized (12–30cm); as the barber goby ranged 2–4.5cm, clients were 1.5 to 15 times larger than the cleaner was. Cleaning activity started at dawn and ended shortly before nightfall, the highest frequency of interactions occurring at early morning (nocturnal clients) and mid-afternoon (diurnal clients). By midday the frequency of cleaning events decreased and their duration increased. A total of 109±3 cleaning events and 30±1min of cleaning activity were estimated per cleaning station per day, both figures low when compared to those recorded for cleaner fishes in tropical areas of the western Atlantic and Indo-Pacific.  相似文献

Temporal–spatial distributions of nitrogen in the low-precipitation headwater areas of the Sanuki Mountain Range, Kagawa Prefecture, Japan, was studied to clarify the natural loading from forests to rivers as basic knowledge for elucidating the eutrophication in dead-water regions downstream. The survey to clarify temporal variations was carried out once every two weeks at the headwaters of five rivers in the Sanuki Mountain Range and the Shikoku Mountains on Shikoku Island, Japan, between May 6, 2002, and April 22, 2003. The survey to clarify the spatial distribution was carried out at 23 stations on the headwaters of the Sanuki Mountain Range between August 13 and 15, 2002. In the Kazuratani and Tarobei Rivers, which originate in the Sanuki Mountain Range, where precipitation is scarce, total N was consistently high – greater than 1mgl–1 throughout the year. The maximum value of total N was 3.2mgl–1 in the Kazuratani River. The spatial distribution of total N in the headwater areas was 0.47–3.8mgl–1. High concentrations over 1mgl–1 were found in the central region of the Sanuki Mountain Range and the maximum value was 3.8mgl–1. From these results, it became clear that nitrogen concentrations in headwater areas of the Sanuki Mountain Range are high compared with those in other regions. Various factors were considered in relation to low precipitation and drying as the causes of the high nitrogen concentrations. Furthermore, It was noted that the majority of the regions with the highest NO3 -N concentrations in our study were composed of granitic rock.  相似文献

A report on the auditory capabilities and their associated functions of elasmobranch fishes along with a brief review of the physics of underwater sound as it relates to hearing by fishes is provided. The inner ears of elasmobranchs possess structures that are no different from other fishes, except for an enlarged macula neglecta, which is unique among fishes. Hearing abilities among sharks (the only elasmobranchs examined) have demonstrated highest sensitivity to low frequency sound (40Hz to approximately 800Hz), which is sensed solely through the particle-motion component of an acoustical field. Free-ranging sharks are attracted to sounds possessing specific characteristics: irregularly pulsed, broad-band (most attractive frequencies: below 80Hz), and transmitted without a sudden increase in intensity. Such sounds are reminiscent of those produced by struggling prey. A sound, even an attractive one, can also result in immediate withdrawal by sharks from a source, if its intensity suddenly increases 20dB [10 times] or more above a previous transmission. Present evidence also shows that the lateral line system does not respond to normal acoustical stimuli. Morphological and physiological evidence suggest that the maculae neglecta possess acoustical relevance and may explain directionality of response despite physical principles that provide still other hypotheses for acoustical directionality. Brain centers controlling acoustical response, particularly among sharks, must be explored in the near future with careful consideration of the habits of subjects based on indications of species-differences regarding the importance of acoustical stimuli to their activities. Numerous facts and ideas about the acoustical biology of elasmobranch fishes make certain that future research will be most rewarding.  相似文献

We report on the reproductive biology of southwestern Atlantic wreckfish. Females mature first at 77.9cm total length (TL) (10.4 years) and all are mature by 90cm TL (15.2 years). Males mature first at 74.9cm (9 years) and all are mature by 80cm TL (10.9 years). The wreckfish is a gonochoristic multiple spawner and the gonadal cycle is synchronized at the population level. Spawning occurs from late July to early October along the continental slope (<300m). Ovarian fecundity varies from 3 to 11.9 million (135–311 oocytes×g–1) and increases exponentially with length. Spawning at western boundary current systems, maintained by homing of adults, is a basic requirement for self-sustaining populations of this species.  相似文献

External body colour is an important trait contributing to phenotypic diversity and individual fitness in fish species. In this study, we use a combination of experimental techniques and field observations to examine patterns of colour divergence in the introduced Nile perch population of Lake Nabugabo, Uganda. We aim to determine whether the proportion of black–brown body colouration of Nile perch differs over a number of size classes, across ecologically distinct wetland edge and forest edge habitats, and whether these differences are the result of rapid (physiological) or ontogenetic (morphological) colour change. We found substantial colour differences in Nile perch between habitats, but trends were not consistent across size classes. Small Nile perch (<15 cm SL) from wetland edge habitats had darker skin pigmentation than those from forest edge; however, no significant colour differences existed between medium (15–40 cm SL) and large (>40 cm SL) Nile perch. Inter-habitat differences in colour in the small size class, and shifts in colour from juvenile to adult appear to be the result of morphological colour change associated with distinct ontogenetic shifts in resource use.  相似文献

Based on the re-interpretation of published data, the von Bertalanffy growth function parameters of the coelacanth, Latimeria chalumnae, are estimated as L=218cm total length, s.e. 23; K=0.059 (year–1), s.e. 0.012; t0=–3.3 (year), s.e. 0.5, corresponding to a life span of 48 years. The length–weight relationship of the form W=a*TLb, with wet weight (W) in g and total length (TL) in cm, is estimated as a=0.0278, b=2.89, r2=0.893, n=87, range=42.5–183cm TL. Using extreme value theory, the maximum length for female coelacanths is estimated as 199cm TL (95% confidence interval=175–223cm TL) and for males as 168cm TL (95% confidence interval 155–180cm TL). Based on data from seven females with embryos or mature eggs, the length-at-first-maturity for females is estimated to be about 150cm TL, corresponding to an age of about 16 years. Based on the value of t0=–3.3 years and on the presence of three scale rings found in a newborn coelacanth, the period of embryogenesis lasts for about three years, the longest known in vertebrates. The natural mortality rate is estimated at M=0.12. Population food consumption is found to be 1.4 times the existing biomass per year, and gross food conversion efficiency indicates that only 10% of the consumed food is utilized for somatic growth.  相似文献

A thermophilic bacterium, identified as a neighboring species to Geobacillus thermocatenulatus, having a growth optimum at 55 °C and, capable of degrading nylon 12, was isolated from soil by enrichment culture technique at 60 °C. At this temperature, the strain grew on 5 g nylon 12 l–1 with a decrease in its molecular weight from 41000 to 11000 over 20 d. The degradation was assumed to be due to endogenous hydrolysis of amide bond in nylon 12. The strain degraded also nylon 66 with a decrease in its molecular weight from 43000 to 17000 in 20 d at 60 °C. Nylon 6 was not degraded.  相似文献
