ABSTRACT

A new wing-reduced species of the stonefly genus Zelandoperla Tillyard is described from Otago, New Zealand. Zelandoperla maungatuaensis sp. n. differs from a related species, Z. denticulata, primarily by lacking full wing development. We used morphological, geographical, and genetic evidence to assess the proposed status of Z. maungatuaensis sp. n. and Z. denticulata as separate monomorphic species, as opposed to conspecific members of a polymorphic species. High genetic divergence was found between distinctly allopatric populations, supporting the status of Z. maungatuaensis sp. n. as a distinct monomorphic species.  相似文献

A naidid oligochaete, Piguetiella denticulata Liang and Xie (Invertebrates of Wuling Mountains area, Southwestern China, pp 383–394, 1997), is redescribed based on new material from Japan and the Russian Far East, and its generic position is verified by an examination of the reproductive organs. P. denticulata closely resembles P. michiganensis in lacking eyes and dorsal hair chaetae, but it is distinguished from the latter by having intermediate teeth on both its dorsal and ventral crotchets. In Japan, P. denticulata is widely distributed and often abundant in mountain streams with sandy and gravelly bottoms.  相似文献

Three new species of Neosartorya and one new Aspergillus of section Fumigati are proposed using a polyphasic approach based on morphology, extrolite production and partial β-tubulin, calmodulin, and actin gene sequences. The phylogenetic analyses using the three genes clearly show that the taxa grouped separately from the known species and confirmed the phenotypic differences. Neosartorya denticulata is characterized by its unique denticulate ascospores with a prominent equatorial furrow; N. assulata by well developed flaps on the convex surface of the ascospores which in addition have two distinct equatorial crests and N. galapagensis by a funiculose colony morphology, short and narrow conidiophores and ascospores with two wide equatorial crests with a microtuberculate convex surface. Aspergillus turcosus can be distinguished by velvety, gray turquoise colonies and short, loosely columnar conidial heads. The four new taxa also have unique extrolite profiles, which contain the mycotoxins gliotoxin and viriditoxin in N. denticulate; apolar compounds provisionally named NEPS in N. assulata and gregatins in N. galapagensis. A. turcosus produced kotanins. N. denticulata sp. nov., N. assulata sp. nov., N. galapagensis sp. nov., and A. turcosus sp. nov. are described and illustrated. We determined the parental species ofYoungia koidzumiana (a natural interspecific hybrid) using PCR and arbitrary 10-mer primers to generate random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. These markers, generated by three primers, were sufficient to distinguishYoungia sonchifolia, Youngia denticulata, Youngia chelidoniifolia, andY. koidzumiana. The electrophoresis profiles of the amplified products from each of the four species were then compared. Three primers produced a total of 42 scorable markers; nine were specific markers forY. denticulata andY. chelidoni-ifolia. The length of the amplified DNA fragments ranged from 370 to 2500 b p. The three primers revealed polymorphic bands, which were indicators of the parental species ofY. koidzumiana. These bands showed a combination of specific profiles forY. denticulata andY. chelidoniifolia. Our results also were comparable to the data obtained for flowering times, floret numbers, and chromosome numbers of the four species. Therefore, we suggest thatY. koidzumiana is a hybrid betweenY. denticulata andY. chelidoniifolia}, and that RAPD markers are well suited for assessing the origins of plant species.  相似文献

Using sequence data of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene, we investigated phylogeographic differentiation of the Amazonian tortoise species Chelonoidis carbonaria and C. denticulata. While C. carbonaria is generally restricted to savannah habitats and adjacent forests, C. denticulata is associated with wet tropical and subtropical forests. Our study suggests a correlation between distinct habitat preferences and phylogeography of the two species. In Maximum Parsimony, Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian analyses, haplotypes of C. carbonaria cluster in several distinct clades reflecting the species’ patchy distribution in savannah habitats. By contrast, haplotypes of C. denticulata are only weakly differentiated; a finding also confirmed by parsimony network analysis. This suggests that the contiguous Amazonian rainforest allows gene flow between populations of the forest-dwelling C. denticulata throughout the range, but significantly impedes gene flow in C. carbonaria. The phylogeographic structure and extant distribution pattern of C. carbonaria is supportive of former Amazonian rainforest fragmentation, enabling the dispersal of savannah species. Based on fossil calibration, we dated divergence times for the C. carbonaria clades using a relaxed molecular clock, resulting in average estimates ranging from 4.0–2.2 mya. This implies that the onset of rainforest fragmentation could predate the Pleistocene considerably. Furthermore, our findings call for further research on geographic and taxonomic variation in C. carbonaria and for a reassessment of the conservation status of the distinct genetic units.  相似文献

The functional morphology of the copulatory organs of Histopona torpida(C. L. Koch, 1834) and Textrix denticulata(Olivier, 1789), investigated by semi-thin serial sectioning after freeze-fixation of the animals in copula, is described. In H. torpida, the long embolus runs through a precisely defined course in the membraneous genital pouch of the female vulva. The patellar apophysis locks the pedipalp in the female epigastric furrow. In T. denticulatathis is accomplished by the retrolateral tibial apophysis that gets hold at the female scape. In both species the conductor has a locking as well as a guiding function for the embolus. A comparison with previously investigated agelenids shows a surprising diversity in the function of the retrolateral tibial apophysis.  相似文献

Abstract: A new genus and species of Devonian tetrapod has been identified from material collected in 1947 from the southern slope of Mt. Celsius, Ymer Ø, North‐East Greenland. The specimen preserves both lower jaws, partial palate, premaxillae and maxillae, with a natural mould of parts of the shoulder girdle. The new taxon, Ymeria denticulata, shows differences in dentition, skull ornament and lateral line expression from both Acanthostega and Ichthyostega, but it shows a closer resemblance to the latter. A cladistic analysis not only suggests that Ymeria lies adjacent to Ichthyostega on the tetrapod stem, but also reveals substantial topological instability. As the third genus and the fifth species of tetrapod identified from North‐East Greenland, it demonstrates the high diversity of Devonian tetrapods in that region.  相似文献

The desmid Micrasterias denticulata Bréb. is useful for the study of streptophyte cell wall biology and morphology. However, no tools to analyze cell biological processes in vivo in this species are available. In the present study, transient gene expression under the control of the chl a/b–binding protein gene of the Closterium peracerosum–strigosum–littorale complex (CpCAB1) promotor was achieved for M. denticulata and illustrated by the intracellular localization of an endogenous cellulose synthase (MdCesA1). A transformation efficiency of 1/5,000 cells was achieved following microparticle bombardment. The free green fluorescent protein (GFP) signal was detected both in the nucleus and in the cytoplasm. The MdCesA1‐GFP fusion protein, on the other hand, occurred at the plasma membrane in particles concentrated at the lobe indentations, the lobe tips, and, to a lesser extent, along the lobe sides. Hence, the multipolar growth mechanism of the cell is reflected. In addition, the margins of cytoplasmic compartments, most likely dictyosomes, were labeled, in accordance with the known secretory pathway of cellulose synthase complexes. Besides intracellular localization studies, the utility of the system for overexpression phenotyping is discussed.  相似文献

The taxonomy ofCuscuta nevadensis andC. veatchii is investigated.Cuscuta nevadensis is more closely related toC. veatchii andC. denticulata than toC. salina, and the former two taxa are accepted as species. A summary of relevant taxonomic and biological information is provided, including synonymy, distribution and ecology, keys, and a comparison of the morphology of flowers and seeds are examined. The morphological basis of vivipary inC. nevadensis is discussed. The status ofCuscuta vivipara, an invalid name in recent use, is clarified.  相似文献

Many weeds interfere with the productivity of wheat and other winter annual crops; however, one common weed Medicago denticulata, appears to have a beneficial effect. An experiment was conducted at Agricultural Experimental Farm of the Indian Statistical Institute, Giridih, Jharkhand to observe the effect of M. denticulata (a legume) on different crops yield of barley (Hordeum vulgare Sensu lato), linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.), Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czernj. & Cosson] and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The commensalisms interaction was studied, in which one species benefits, while the other is unaffected, between the crops, M. denticulata and other weeds, to observe the role of medicago as biological control agent of other weeds for enhancement of crop productivity. Further, a statistical test was performed to establish the effect of M. denticulata and weed infestations based on one-step Markov structure of the covariance matrix of the biomass. This permitted development of a mathematical model of a crop–M. denticulata–other weeds system and their interactions through direct and indirect competition for resources. Crops yield decreased considerably due to the presence of other weeds, while it increased due to introduction of medicago and hence medicago acted as a controlling agent in a crop–M. denticulata–other weeds system. Our mathematical analysis supported the experimental findings. The model parameters are estimated through a nonlinear least square and stochastic differential equations. Moreover, some thresholds for the growth of medicago population came out from our analysis that may be used as a biological control threshold for the enhancement of crop productivity.  相似文献

Spore morphology in the Pteris cretica complex, including Pteris brasiliensis, P. ciliaris, P. cretica, P. denticulata var. denticulata, P. denticulata var. tristicula, P. ensiformis, P. multifida and P. mutilata was examined using light and scanning electron microscope. The spores are trilete, triangular to circular in shape, with an equatorial thickening (= cingulum). Equatorial diameter ranges from 29 to 69 μm, and polar diameter from 18 to 53 μm. Exospore is proximally verrucate and distally rugate, with the exception of Pteris ensiformis, which has cones on both polar faces. Perispore is generally less than 1 μm thick, apparently single-layered in section, and translucent under light microscope. Spheroids were frequently observed on the surfaces of both perispore and exospore. Hyaline spores lacking cingulum were found in all specimens. Pteris brasiliensis, P. cretica and P. denticulata exhibit pronounced polymorphism and, in addition to trilete spores these taxa also produce atypical spores such as tetralete, monolete and intermediate types.  相似文献

The world of protists remains largely unexplored. A thorough electron-microscopic investigation of a few microlitres of deep-sea sediment from 2,964 m water depth near the South Sandwich Islands (Southern Ocean) revealed siliceous scales of filose-amoeba protist species, two of which have not been reported previously from Antarctica or from elsewhere in the Southern Hemisphere. However, all the species are known from other oceans and, in one case, from freshwater habitats. The Antarctic protistan scales belong to four species of filose amoebae: Pinaciophora fluviatilis Greef 1869, Pinaciophora denticulata Thomsen 1978, Pinaciophora multicosta Thomsen 1978 and Rabdiaster reticulata (Thomsen 1979) Mikrjukov 1999 nov. comb. Our study shows that (1) none of the species has been recorded from the Australasian biogeograpical region, (2) Pinaciophora multicosta and Rabdiaster reticulata are new records for the Southern Ocean and for the Southern Hemisphere as a whole, (3) prior to this investigation, Pinaciophora multicosta had been reported once only, from the Baltic Sea (Europe). These results highlight the problem of undersampling in the study of the global distribution of protists.  相似文献

Summary At low levels on shores in New South Wales, foliose algae are abundant and often occupy all substrata; microalgal grazing gastropods are rare or absent. At higher levels, foliose algae are sparse or absent and grazing gastropods are abundant. Hypotheses for the causes of the lower vertical limits of distribution of these grazers include the effects of increased predation or the deleterious physiological effects of increased period of submergence at lower levels on the shore. Alternatively, the presence of the algae, because they occupy space and deprive the grazers of substratum for feeding, may prevent the downward movement, or survival of the grazers at low levels. Under the first two of these hypotheses, algae are able to colonize and grow in low-shore areas as an indirect result of factors which remove grazers. Under the third hypothesis, the algae are directly responsible for the lack of grazers.Experimental clearings of the low-shore algae and introductions of the mid-shore limpets Cellana tramoserica and Siphonaria denticulata were used to test these hypotheses. C. tramoserica grazes microalgae and removes them from the substratum, preventing colonization. S. denticulata, in contrust, crops the algae, leaving a visible cover of algae on the substratum, which can grow rapidly. Because of its method of feeding, S. denticulata had no measurable impact on the rates of colonization, nor on the dry weights of algae, compared with those of ungrazed areas. C. tramoserica could keep cleared areas tree from foliose algae, but only when the limpets were mainfained in great density (10 per 900 cm2). They were less effective where wave-action was greater.Neither species of limpets could survive when placed onto beds of mature algae, because they had no substratum on which to cling and were swept away by the waves. C. tramoserica did not invade clearings below their lower limit of distribution where they had to move over a bed of foliose algae. Few C. tramoserica moved directly downshore into cleared areas. When placed on bare rock within low-shore beds of algae of different ages, S. denticulata remained amongst the algae and maintained their tissue-weights. Few C. tramoserica remained in areas with well-developed algae, compared with areas having sparse algal growth. Those Cellana which remained amongst well-developed algae lost weight, whereas limpets in areas with less algal growth mammtained their weights. In experimental cages in low-shore beds of algae, where the limpets were inaccessible to potential predators, C. tramoserica lost weight and died. On cleared areas they survived for many weeks, but lost weight and died as algae grew and covered the substratum. In the absence of predation, the micro-algal grazer C. tramoserica could not survive in lowshore areas because algae grew too fast and occupied the substratum, making it inaccessible for the limpets to graze; the algae, once grown beyond small sporelings, are not a suitable food-source for C. tramoserica, and the loss of weight and death of these limpets is attributable to starvation. The lower limit of distribution of C. tramoserica is not due to the direct effects of physical factors associated with prolonged submersion, nor to the impact of predators, but is apparently determined by the presence of rapidly growing, extensive beds of foliose algae at low levels on the shore. The cause of the limit of distribution of S. denticulata is not yet known and predation may prove to be important. Removal of S. denticulata from low-shore algal beds would not, however, affect the domination of substrata by algae. Grazing by S. denticulata at very great density had no effect on algal cover nor weight. In the intertidal community studied, the persistence of a low-shore algal zone, bounded above by abundant grazers is not influenced by the activities of predators, but is a direct result of interactions between the grazers and the algae.  相似文献

According to most studies on seed dispersal in tropical forests, mammals and birds are considered the main dispersal agents and the role played by other animal groups remains poorly explored. We investigate qualitative and quantitative components of the role played by the tortoise Chelonoidis denticulata in seed dispersal in southeastern Amazon, and the influence of seasonal variation in tortoise movement patterns on resulting seed shadows. Seed shadows produced by this tortoise were estimated by combining information on seed passage times through their digestive tract, which varied from 3 to 17 days, with a robust dataset on movements obtained from 18 adult C. denticulata monitored with radio transmitters and spoon-and-line tracking devices. A total of 4,206 seeds were found in 94 collected feces, belonging to 50 seed morphotypes of, at least, 25 plant genera. Very low rates of damage to the external structure of the ingested seeds were observed. Additionally, results of germination trials suggested that passage of seeds through C. denticulata’s digestive tract does not seem to negatively affect seed germination. The estimated seed shadows are likely to contribute significantly to the dispersal of seeds away from parent plants. During the dry season seeds were dispersed, on average, 174.1 m away from the location of fruit ingestion; during the rainy season, this mean dispersal distance increased to 276.7 m. Our results suggest that C. denticulata plays an important role in seed dispersal in Amazonian forests and highlight the influence of seasonal changes in movements on the resulting seed shadows.  相似文献
