This article reports the uses of photography in the Religious Education and Community Project, Coventry, England. It shows how ethnographic fieldwork and the development of curriculum materials for religious education in Britain are being conducted as phases of an integrated process. The photographic record, it is argued, is intrinsic both to eliciting data from members of the communities under study and in the sensitizing and informing of both pupils and educators. Furthermore not only the photographs themselves but also the differing reactions of specific communities to the prospect of being photographed during worship need analysis and can provide insights of value to religious educators in understanding the relation of cultural norms and theological emphases. As an illustration the responses of Christians to the ethnographer's requests to photograph the rite of Holy Communion are considered.  相似文献

We extend the Mantel-Haenszel estimating function to estimate both the intra-cluster pairwise correlation and the main effects for sparse clustered binary data. We propose both a composite likelihood approach and an estimating function approach for the analysis of such data. The proposed estimators are consistent and asymptotically normally distributed. Simulation results demonstrate that the two approaches are comparable in terms of bias and efficiency; however, the estimating equation approach is computationally simpler. Analysis of the Georgia High Blood Pressure survey is used for illustration.  相似文献

Summary Scientific photography is an important facet of plant tissue culture. The aim of photography in plant tissue culture should be to illustrate clearly the developmental stages occurring in vitro. However, the photographic results presented in publications are often poor, and morphogenetic responses are often not clearly documented. Plant tissue culture is a very visual science, and the valuable tool of photography is often not used properly. If the morphogenetic responses are not well documented, an important part of the reserch is missed, and the report ends up having limited scientific value. Simple methods for improving the results of photography in plant tissue culture are discussed, along with photographic equipment, photomacrography, stereophotomicrography, suitable backgrounds for photography, use of a digital scanner, and the construction of photographic plates.  相似文献

Clinical photography is an important tool for teaching practitioners and field workers about the clinical manifestations of famine and undernutrition, particularly with respect to the Global South. Current international guidelines for clinical photography are not consistently applied or enforced, which has led to violations of privacy and rights, particularly for patients and victims of disaster in the Global South. Combining existing clinical photography guidelines from the North with ongoing clinical ethics debates in the South, this paper explores approaches to establishing photography guidelines throughout the world that will be sensitive to the privacy and dignities of all patients and victims of emergencies.  相似文献

Standardized, high-quality, preoperative photographs of the nose are critical for preoperative rhinoplasty planning, comparative postoperative assessment, and demonstration of surgical results. To produce these high-quality, reproducible photographs, it is essential to standardize lighting, to properly position the patient in standard views, to avoid lens distortion, and to maintain consistent camera-to-subject distances. Traditional photographic standards have been well documented in the literature; however, most do not address digital photography, and none address digital photography for rhinoplasty. Certain variables in digital photography that are not present in 35-mm photography can be critical to the appearance of the final image. Variables such as image color and contrast (which usually vary between digital cameras), focal length differences between 35-mm and most digital cameras, the effect of resolution and compression on image quality, and the effect of the printing method used can affect the appearance of the external anatomy of the nose in the final print or image. Lack of detail in the external nasal anatomy becomes an issue if the surgeon uses the photograph intraoperatively for reference, as the authors do. Initially, the authors experienced difficulties with observing subtleties in the tip-defining points and tip anatomy using digital photography when compared with our traditional methods of 35-mm photography. The lack of detail in the external anatomy was most prevalent in the frontal and basal views. Thus, the authors have since tailored their photographic methods to document the rhinoplasty patient to maximize the visual information of the external nasal anatomy in the photographic and the printed image. This article is intended to review the photographic principles for standardized rhinoplasty photography, address the additional considerations necessary when using digital photography, discuss the printing variables that can affect overall quality of the printed image, and discuss the authors' new method of photographing the rhinoplasty patient.  相似文献

Since many years, the myocardial perfusion scintigraphy plays a leading role in the management of coronary artery disease because of its excellent performance for the diagnosis of myocardial ischemia. This exam has also a value widely recognized for risk stratification, assessment of the effectiveness of treatments and research of myocardial viability. The realization of this review is composite with many steps and persons which can potentially provide artefacts. The advent of semiconductor cameras significantly reduce some artefacts, but was not accompanied by a complete removal of these latters, which for some of them may be exacerbated. The use of such cameras will therefore require a learning curve to understand these evolutions. In this article, we propose a clinical illustration of centering artefacts specific of semiconductor cameras, examples of motion artefacts (respiratory and patient motion) and apical artefacts. These abnormalities are commonly encountered during daily practice of myocardial scintigraphy.  相似文献

Repeat photography has emerged as a popular tool for visualizing climate change yet has been employed relatively little by visual and environmental anthropologists. Based on research in Tanzania’s South Pare Mountains, this article shows how repeat photography can be a powerful method for environmental anthropologists both practically and epistemologically: repeat photography as a practice integrates well with ethnography, while the contradictions emerging through multimodal research help us reflect on the narratives about environmental change that we encounter and write ourselves. At the same time, detailed ethnography is crucial for understanding the lived experience and wider politico-economic dimensions of landscape change that are not visible through repeat photography alone.  相似文献

During physical development catalytic reduction of silver ions to metallic silver takes place where silver has been bound in the tissue, enlarging the silver deposits to microscopically visible dimensions. The amplified silver deposits give high contrast staining in yellow, brown and black suitable for both color and monochrome photography. Digital photography has become an economical and efficient substitute for conventional photography. We recently converted our resident clinical photography to a digital format to make archiving more efficient and to save the costs of clinical photography. We present a model that can be applied to a large group or academic practice outlining the conversion of our clinical photography to digital format. We discuss the costs that we have incurred during the past 3 years of conventional photography, the economic benefit and costs for conversion to digital, and a 5-year projection of savings using digital photography. We also discuss the advantages of digital photography and the equipment needed for the conversion.  相似文献

Silver staining has become a versatile method for the visualization of specific cell structures and products. The similarity of the impregnation "nuclei" of reduced silver staining to the silver "specks" or "nuclei" of the latent image in photography is noted. The effect of flash photography on seahorse species has never been tested. An experiment was established to test the effect of flash photography and the handling of Hippocampus whitei, a medium‐sized seahorse species endemic to Australia, on their behavioural responses, movements and site persistence. A total of 24 H. whitei were utilized in the experiment with eight in each of the three treatments (flash photography, handling and control). The effect of underwater flash photography on H. whitei movements was not significant; however, the effect of handling H. whitei to take a photograph had a significant effect on their short‐term behavioural responses to the photographer. Kaplan–Meier log‐rank test revealed that there was no significant difference in site persistence of H. whitei from each of the three treatments and that flash photography had no long‐term effects on their site persistence. It is concluded that the use of flash photography by divers is a safe and viable technique with H. whitei, particularly if photographs can be used for individual identification purposes.  相似文献

Conservation often focuses on ‘ecologically intact’ habitats with little human influence. But where all such habitats have been lost or modified, identifying promising restoration targets is a key goal. We describe a direct approach to identify high conservation value targets using predictive distribution maps of taxa that, based on habitat affinity, ease of detection and abundance can be used to infer native species richness and prioritize conservation investment. We used 1169 avian point counts in a 1560 km2 study area, remote‐sensed data and models incorporating imperfect detectability to predict habitat occupancy in 18 widely‐distributed native birds; 12 of which were determined by experts to be positive indicators of old‐forest conditions. Forest‐association scores for these 12 species where then used as weights in a composite distribution map of the probability of community occurrence, which corresponded well with the occurrence of old forest stands mapped by aerial photography. Our results indicate that composite maps of widespread indicators improve site prioritization by incorporating the behavioural and demographic responses of a diverse range of indicators to variation in patch size, configuration and adjacent human land use.  相似文献

Successful implementation of the European Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive requires a deepened and multidisciplinary knowledge of the wastewater systems. The development of ready-to-use tools for decision makers is, in this sense, a challenge. This paper proposes a methodology to efficiently prioritize wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) on the basis of the relative environmental, social and public health impacts, taking into account the territorial context issues. The proposed methodology has led to the implementation of a composite indicator. The several choices made for its development, from the definition of framework to the final outcomes, have been evaluated in depth and are supported through methodological and statistical techniques. The potential use of the composite indicator with the inherent advantages and limitations are discussed in order to provide a ready-to-use tool for final users for WWTPs prioritization. Moreover, a concise methodology for composite index implementation is described.  相似文献

Abstract: The focus of digital photography has moved from documentation to quantitative analysis. To illustrate the potential application of this diagnostic tool to quantify color and shape, we photographed both artificial and natural semipalmated plover (Charadrius semipalmatus) nests to determine what benefits, if any, were derived from egg crypsis (i.e., eggshell color and egg marking shape). This simple and cost-effective method provides precise and repeatable quantification of color and shape that discriminated subtle differences in egg crypsis of artificial and natural nests that were not visible to us. The advantages of digital photography and image-editing software outweigh any shortcomings, as long as standard protocols are followed for capturing and analyzing images. Used with due care, digital photography is useful in studies that need to quickly assign biological traits, such as age and sex, to individuals, and to document temporal change that may occur as a response to management or disturbance.  相似文献
