Redescription of the largest trigonotarbid arachnid —Kreischeria wiedei Geinitz 1882 from the Upper Carboniferous of Zwickau, Germany

Kreischeria wiedei Geinitz 1882 (Arachnida: Trigonotarbida) from the Upper Carboniferous (Westphalian D) of Zwickau, Germany is redescribed. The family KreischeriidaeHaase 1890 is reinstated and rediagnosed to accomodate this species. We provisionally refer the speciesAnzinia thevenini (Pruvost 1919),Gondwanarachne argentinensis Pinto &Hünicken 1980,Hemikreischeria geinitzi (Thévenin 1902),Pseudokreischeria pococki Gill 1924 andPseudokreischeria varia Petrunkevitch 1949 to Kreischeriidae too.     

The trilobiteProtostygina and the composition of the Styginidae, with two new genera

The Styginidae is regarded as an exclusively Ordovician family of trilobites, separate from the Scutelluidae. The hitherto poorly known genusProtostygina Prantl &P?ibyl, 1949 is revised. It is recorded with certainty only from the Llanvirn of the Czech Republic, and the type species is a senior synonym of“Raymondaspis” rubensi rubensi P?ibyl &VANěK, 1968 and“R.” rubensi lybar ?najdr, 1976. Two new styginid genera are proposed:Cyrtocybe, with type species“Raymondaspis” turgida Whittington, 1965, is known from the upper Arenig and lower Llanvirn of Newfoundland, Maine and Norway; andPromargo, with type speciesP.forteyi n. sp., occurs in the Arenig of Newfoundland and Spitsbergen.Turgicephalus Fortey, 1980 is regarded as a junior synonym ofRaymondaspis P?ibyl inPrantl &P?ibyl, 1949. Three genera are excluded from the Styginidae:Kirkdomina Tripp, 1962,Pseudostygina Zhou inZhou et al., 1982 andStyginella P?ibyl &Vaněk, 1971.

A revision of the genusOlpitrichum Atk

A revision of the genusOlpitrichum Atk. was undertaken, revealing three species:O. macrosporum (Farlow exSacc.)Sumstine,O. patulum (Sacc etBerl.)Hol.-Jech. andO. tenellum (Berk. etCurt)Hol.-Jech.O. macrosporum andO. tenellum occur on decayed cotton bolls,O. patulum on dead rotten wood and bark. Aspergilliform phialosporous state has been found inO. macrosporum andO. patulum.     

Validation and redescription ofOryctina (Loranthaceae)

The formerly obscure genusOryctina v.Tiegh. is redescribed and validated. It is shown to include two species, an old one, previously known asOryctanthus scabridus Eichl., nowOryctina scabrida (Eichl.) v.Tiegh., and a new one,Oryctina subaphylla Rizz., both from Brazil.     

Arachniden-Neufunde im mitteleuropäischen Unterkarbon bis Perm — Beitrag zur Revision der Familie AphantomartidaePetrunkevitch 1945 (Arachnida, Trigonotarbida)

On the basis of rich new material covering a broad time span from the Lower Carboniferous (Viséan) to the Lower Permian (Asselian), the trigonotarbid family AphantomartidaePetrunkevitch 1945 is revised. According to investigations presented here it includes only one genus,Aphantomartus Pocock 1911, with two species,A. pustulatus (Scudder 1884) undA. areolatus (Pocock 1911). Many synonyms that existed in the literature until now, the stratigraphic occurrence, palaeobiogeographic distribution as well as taphonomic aspects are discussed. Besides some newly found as well as newly investigated specimens both the oldest and the youngest (the youngest trigonotarbid hitherto known) representatives of the family are presented.

Three genera of lignicolousHyphomycetes Septonema Corda,Hormiactella Saac. andLylea Morgan-Jones are discussed. Illustrations and determination keys are provided. Five species ofSeptonema—S. fasciculare (Corda) Hughes,S. leptaleum (Ellis & Harkn.) Hughes,S. pinicola Hol.-Jech.,S. secedens Corda andS. laricium Hol.-Jech.—and two species ofHormiactella—H. fusca (Preuss) Sacc. andH. asetosa Hol.-Jech.—have been found in Czechoslovakia. A new speciesS. pseudobinum Hol.-Jech. is described from Romania.Septonema tetracoilum (Corda Hughes is accommodated in the genusLylea Morgan-Jones.     

The relationships of the genusAustralomymar [Hymenoptera: Mymaridae]

The holotype female ofAustralomymar aurigerum Girault is redescribed and figured. Comparative data on the types of the five described species ofPolynemoidea Girault are given, and the affinities of both genera briefly discussed. They are maintained as distinct genera, probably related toSelenaeus Waterhouse and elements of the large genusPolynema Haliday,s. l.     

On the identity and systematic position of the genusDirphys [Hym.: Aphelinidae]

Types have been examined of the aphelinid genusDirphys Howard (Type species,Mesidia mexicana Howard). It is found to be closely related toEncarsia Förster and related coccophagine genera. Hence its earlier placement in the subfamilyAphelininae sensu De Santis orAphytinae Jasnosh is considered untenable and, consequently, it is transferred to subfamilyCoccophaginae sensu De Santis.     

A revision of the moss genusCrossidium (Pottiaceae) with the description of the new genusMicrocrossidium

A world revision of the genusCrossidium Jur. recognizes 11 species, which are described and discussed in the context of important taxonomic characters. An identification key is provided.C. asirense Frey & Kürschner is reduced to synonymy withC. davidai Catcheside, and the geographical range ofC. laevipilum Ther. & Trab. is extended to Europe. Phylogenetic trends are interpreted on the basis of two main evolutionary lines associated with the presence or absence of hyaline hair-points on the leaves. A twelfth species is transferred toMicrocrossidium Guerra & Cano, gen. nov., asM. apiculatum (Magill)Guerra & Cano, comb. nova, because of differences in stem anatomy, peristome configuration, and spore morphology.     

Taxonomic status of barbe's leaf-monkey,Presbytis barbei Blyth

The taxonomic status ofPresbytis barbei Blyth has been discussed in the light of fresh collections obtained from its type localityviz Tripura, India. The study reveals thatPresbytis barbei Blyth (1847) is nothing but a synonym ofPresbytis phayrei phayrei Blyth and the so called type specimens ofbarbei present in the Zoological Survey of India, Calcutta, appear to be wrongly labelled specimens ofPresbytis cristatus atrior Pocock.     

Contribution to the knowledge ofEchinodorus macrophyllus (Kunth)Mich. andE. scaber Rataj from tropical America

The paper deals with the taxonomy and geographical distribution of the two species of the genusEchinodorus whichFassett (1955) did not work up satisfactorily in his revision i.e.Echinodorus macrophyllus (Kunth)Mich. whichFassett does not quote at all, andE. scaber Rataj whichFassett mistook forE. muricatus Griseb. Further a new variety and the diagnoses of hybrids, among whichE. punctatus Mich. is included, are cited.     

A note on the genusBrassavola (Orchidaceae)

This paper contains a brief survey of the four subgeneric sections which comprise the genusBrassavola R. Br. of theOrchidaceae, with special reference to the group of species (§Grandiflorae Rolfe) whichSchlechter proposed separating fromBrassavola as the genusRhyncholaelia. The author maintains that these species should be allowed to remain inBrassavola as a distinct section.     

Taxonomic status of the belemnite genusBelemnopsis Bayle 1878

The Tethyan genus “Belemnopsis” of authors, notBayle 1878, includes 110–120 Bajocian to Hauterivian belemnite species and subspecies from Europe and the southern hemisphere. Its type species,Belemnites sulcatus Miller 1826 from the Callovian to Oxfordian of England, belongs to the Boreal belemnite genusLagonibelus Gustomesov 1956, since Phillips selected a lectotype for it in 1870. But the subsequent designation of the type species byDouvillé in 1879 is invalid according to Art. 67 (h) ICZN, and consequentlyBelemnopsis Bayle gets a nomen dubium. It is also a homonym ofBelemnopsis Edwards inGray 1849, and has, therefore, to be replaced byPachybelemnopsis Riegraf 1980, a junior subjective synonym, the family Belemnopseidae Naef 1922 by MesohibolitidaeNerodenko 1983, and the suborder BelemnopseinaJeletzky 1965 by PachybelemnopseinaRiegraf inRiegraf et al. 1998.     

Notes on some African hepatic genera 1–5

The present study deals with five genera of hepatics in Africa, Isotachis Mitt., Anastrophyllum (Spruce) Steph., Tritomaria Schiffn. ex Loeske, Gymnocoleopsis (Schust.) Schust. and Lophozia (Dum.) Dum. All African populations of the genus Isotachis Mitt. are considered to be one species, I. aubertii (Schwaegr.) Mitt. Four species of Anastrophyllum (Spruce) Steph. (s.l.), A. auritum (Lehm.) Steph., A. piligerum (Nees) Spruce, A. subcomplicatum (Lehm. et Lindenb.) Steph. and A. minutum (Schreb.) Schust., and two species of Tritomaria Schiffn. et Loeske, T. camerunensis S. Arnell and T. exsecta (Schrad.) Schiffn. ex Loeske occur in Africa. Gymmocoleopsis multiflora (Steph.) Schust. represents a genus and species hitherto unreported for the African flora. Finally, five Lophozia (Dum.) Dum. species, L. argentina (Steph.) Schust., L. capensis S. Arnell, L. decolorans (Limpr.) Steph., L. hedbergii S. Arnell and L. tristaniana (S. Arnell) Váňa, are reported from central and southern Africa; two of these (L. argentina (Steph.) Schust. and L. decolorans (Limpr.) Steph.) represent the first reports from Africa.     

Chromosome counts and chromosome morphology of some selected species
