Fish production in the Jarama River, Central Spain   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Fish production was estimated at three sites on the Jarama River, a small, typical upland river in Central Spain. Population estimates were made by the successive removal method of electrofishing. The same six species were recorded at each of the sites: Chondrostoma polylepis, Barbus barbus bocagei, Leuciscus cephalus pyraenaicus, Salmo trutta m. fario, Gobio gobio and Cobitis paludicola , with the first three species always dominant. Density, biomass, production (assuming that No is the total number of eggs spawned), and available production were, respectively: 13502-85776 ind. ha−1, 178.6–221.3 kg ha−1, 221.7–583.6 kg ha−1 yr−1, 118.1–271.9 kg ha−1 yr−1. Production estimates based on mortality curves were 7.9–19.5% (mean: 13.7) lower than those based on estimated from the number of eggs laid. Production per unit of area was highest at the widest and deepest site. Brown trout production contributed only 2–4% of the total production for all sites.  相似文献

Understanding the factors affecting a species’ population size is crucial for conservation initiatives. Hyraxes are small, gregarious animals, predominantly found on kopjes (rock outcrops) and thus form metapopulation communities. In Tanzania, two species of hyraxes inhabit Serengeti National Park, the rock hyrax Procavia capensis johnstoni and bush hyrax Heterohyrax brucei. This study focuses on the factors that affect hyrax population size, including factors such as human presence, habitat type, kopje size and kopje height. We found that larger and taller kopjes tended to have more hyraxes than smaller ones, while kopjes in wooded grassland had more hyraxes than kopjes in grassland. Human presence often affects species negatively, but in the case of hyraxes, we found that kopjes with human presence had larger populations than kopjes without humans. We discuss possible explanations for this and suggest that human presence is related to fewer predators and higher food availability.  相似文献

Scales were valid for age determination of pike-cichlid Crenicichla lepidota Heckel in two Brazilian streams, since, for every age-class, annual rings (annuli) were formed once a year, in August. Back-calculated Jengths-for-age coincided with those obtained by inspecting the monthly length-frequency distributions. Only 11 reproductive females were captured (length range 9.6–16 cm, age 1+ and 2 + ) and their fecundity ( F ) increased with fish length ( L ) according to: F= 2.4027 L2.3631. Average annual density and biomass in four localities of Zanga do Campus were 2194, 1676, 1824 and 1071 individuals ha−1 and 17.2, 12.1, 13.8 and 18.7 kg ha−1and about 1000 individuals ha−1 and 8.5 kg ha−1 in three combined sites of Zanga do Barbará. The annual production ranged between 18.5 and 32.7 kg ha−1 a −1 in the first stream and 8.7 kg ha −1a −1 in the other. Feeding tactics differed between streams and age-classes (0+ v . 1+/2+). In winter, the 0+ age-class in Zanga do Campus fed mainly upon Ephemeroptera (Baetidae) but in other months also fed on zooplankton. In winter, these age-classes in Zanga do Barbara preyed upon benthic species but the contribution of different taxa varied between months. In January, these fish preyed exclusively upon Chydoridae and fish. The effects of a severe drought (November-February) upon these parameters are discussed.  相似文献

The sardine Limnothrissa miodon was very patchily distributed in Lake Kariba in 1981–1983 and its mean biomass was 59 23 kg ha−1, declining from 90–91 kg ha−1 in 1981 to 38–66 kg ha−1 in 1983. In addition, the mean size of the fish fell from 55–2 mm in 1981 to 49–9 mm in 1983. These changes are attributed to the effects of drought and reduced river flows as well as to the high level of commercial fishing for this species. There was a correlation between commercial catches and biomass estimates which allowed estimation of biomass in previous years from fishing statistics. Fishing effort appeared to be a major influence on sardine abundance: total biomass in 1985 was about 10% of what it was in 1974 when the fishery began. When expressed in terms of unit area, as is usual for African lakes, the pelagic biomass appeared to be greater in Lake Tanganyika, where Limnothrissa is endemic, than in Lake Kariba, although there is little difference in their primary productivity, but consideration in terms of volume rather than area shows that this was not the  相似文献

The male genitalia of the rock hyrax (Procavia and Heterohyrax) are described. Features of the gross anatomy and histology of the testes and male accessory organs are presented, and comparison is made between the sexually active and sexually quiescent animal.
Microscopical observations have revealed the main area of storage of spermatozoa in this mammal and partly on these grounds, a new nomenclature for different parts of the reproductive system is proposed. Seasonal variations in male sexual activity in these mammals are also discussed, in addition to anatomical considerations.  相似文献

Thirty forest bird communities were studied with regard to the changes in structural indices (number of species, density, biomass, species diversity H') and in energetics (energy flow A, production P, ecological efficiency P/A) in temporal and spatial gradients. All these characteristics increase during temporal succession; in natural deciduous forest there is a two-peak pattern of the increase, with the maximum in 15–20 yr old forest ("time ecotone"; A = 692.9 Megajoules ha−1 season−1, H'= 4.2 bits), In artificially managed pine forest these indices rise monotonically, reaching a maximum in sub-climax (A = 426.2 MJ ha−1 season−1, H'= 4.2 bits). In a deciduous forest a tendency exists to decrease the ecological efficiency (from 8% to 2%), while in a coniferous stand this variable remains low (2%) and almost constant during succession. In a spatial gradient, the highest values of energy flow and species diversity occur in forest stands with moderate soil/water regime and of ecotonal character (A = 851.2 MJ ha−1 season−1, H'= 4.5 bits). All mature forest bird communities show similar values of diversity (4.2–4.5 bits) and ecological efficiency (appr. 2%), though they differ in the rate of energy flow. The relation of these findings to the current concepts of ecological succession are discussed.  相似文献

Changes in species composition, stem abundance, and basal area of trees taller than or equal to 10 m in a medium altitude tropical rain forest at the Ngogo study area, Kibale National Park, Uganda are described for the period between 1975 and 1998 ( n  = 23 years). Two enumeration episodes were conducted in 263 plots of 5 m by 50 m during 1975–80 and 1997–98. During this period, species richness decreased by 3% (from 92 to 89). Species diversity (H') also declined slightly from 2.97 to 2.86. The number of trees recorded in the sample plots decreased by 8% (from 2545 to 2329), while basal area decreased from 49.48 m2 ha−1 to 48.68 m2 ha−1. However, stem abundance and basal area increased for some species.  相似文献

White-chinned petrels Procellaria aequinoctialis and grey petrels Procellaria cinerea are among the most frequently killed seabird species by accidental bycatch, and both species have received strong conservation concern. Data on population size are required to evaluate the impact of bycatch and to establish management plans. We estimated the population size of both species at Kerguelen, Southern Indian Ocean, from 2004 to 2006 by explicitly taking into account detection probability of burrows using distance sampling and burrow occupancy. A total of 31 line-transects were distributed across the eastern part of Kerguelen, representing a total length of 566 km. Detectability was low (from 0.19 to 0.54 for white-chinned petrels, 0.58 for grey petrels). Burrow densities varied from 1.37±0.67 to 25.77±5.23 burrows ha−1 for white-chinned petrels and was 2.78±0.79 burrows ha−1 for grey petrels. For white-chinned petrels, these densities were extrapolated to the entire surface area of vegetation and there were 234 000 (186 000–297 000) active burrows on Kerguelen. For grey petrels, the number of active burrows for the eastern part of Kerguelen was 3400 (1900–5600). Based on these estimates, the potential biological removal method suggests that the additional mortality on birds caused by the fisheries operating around Kerguelen can be considered a serious threat for the species at least at the regional scale of the Southern Indian Ocean, especially for grey petrels.  相似文献

The impact of viruses and protists on bacterioplankton mortality was examined monthly during 2 years (May 2005–April 2007) in an oligotrophic coastal environment (NW Mediterranean Sea). We expected that in such type of system, (i) bacterial losses would be caused mainly by protists, and (ii) lysogeny would be an important type of virus–host interaction. During the study period, viruses and grazers together were responsible for 50.6 ± 40.1% day−1 of bacterial standing stock losses (BSS) and 59.7 ± 44.0% day−1 of bacterial production losses (BP). Over the first year (May 2005–April 2006), protists were the principal cause of bacterial mortality, removing 29.9 ± 20.4% day−1 of BSS and 33.9 ± 24.3% day−1 of BP, whereas viral lysis removed 13.5 ± 17.0% day−1 of BSS and 12.3 ± 12.3% day−1 of BP. During the second year (May 2006–April 2007), viruses caused comparable bacterial losses (29.2 ± 14.8% day−1 of BSS and 40.9 ± 20.7% day−1 of BP) to protists (28.6 ± 25.5% day−1 of BSS and 32.4 ± 20.0% day−1 of BP). In 37% of cases higher losses of BP due to viruses than due to protists were found. Lysogenic infection was detected in 11 of 24 samplings. Contrary to our expectations, lytic infections dominated over the two years, and viruses resulted to be a significant source of bacterial mortality in this oligotrophic site.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) was measured at 8h intervals over a 1 year period in a stream draining 51 ha of moorland with peaty soils.
2. DOM concentrations increased with increasing stream discharge from low flow values of 0–3 mg 1−1 to maximum values of 30 mg 1−1. There were also seasonal differences of up to 13mgl−1 between August (maximum) and February, and differences of about 2.5 mg l−1 between rising and falling stage samples.
3. Seasonal variation was closely related to mean temperature.
4. Total loss over the year was 168 kg ha−1 DOM (84 kg ha−1 C), larger than previous estimates for upland sites.  相似文献

Two species of hyrax, Heterohyrax brucei and Procavia johnstoni, inhabit rock outcrops, or kopjes, in the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. Such distinct 'island' habitats provide an excellent model to investigate natural metapopulation dynamics with distinct small populations with extinction and colonization events, as well as migration between populations. Allele frequencies, genetic variability and genetic distances between populations were calculated based on DNA microsatellite markers. The genetic diversity in both species of hyrax, especially P. johnstoni, was surprisingly low: allelic diversity ranged from 2 to 7 alleles per locus. This may have been induced by colonization by a small number of individuals from single source populations. F-statistics, assignment tests and calculations of pairwise relatedness all indicated female-biased dispersal in H. brucei but not P. johnstoni. Values of FIS in P. johnstoni showed an excess of homozygotes indicative of high rates of inbreeding; evidence for inbreeding could not be detected in H. brucei. Although female dispersal patterns in H. brucei seem to prevent inbreeding and consequently reduce risk of local extinction, this seems not to be the case in P. johnstoni.  相似文献

Biomass crops mitigate carbon emissions by both fossil fuel substitution and sequestration of carbon in the soil. We grew Miscanthus x giganteus for 16 years at a site in southern Ireland to (i) compare methods of propagation, (ii) compare response to fertilizer application and quantify nutrient offtakes, (iii) measure long-term annual biomass yields, (iv) estimate carbon sequestration to the soil and (v) quantify the carbon mitigation by the crop. There was no significant difference in the yield between plants established from rhizome cuttings or by micro-propagation. Annual off-takes of N and P were easily met by soil reserves, but soil K reserves were low in unfertilized plots. Potassium deficiency was associated with lower harvestable yield. Yields increased for 5 years following establishment but after 10 years showed some decline which could not be accounted for by the climate driven growth model MISCANMOD. Measured yields were normalized to estimate both autumn (at first frost) and spring harvests (15 March of the subsequent year). Average autumn and spring yields over the 15 harvest years were 13.4±1.1 and 9.0±0.7 t DW ha−1 yr−1 respectively. Below ground biomass in February 2002 was 20.6±4.6 t DW ha−1. Miscanthus derived soil organic carbon sequestration detected by a change in 13C signal was 8.9±2.4 t C ha−1 over 15 years. We estimate total carbon mitigation by this crop over 15 years ranged from 5.2 to 7.2 t C ha−1 yr−1 depending on the harvest time.  相似文献

Small mammals in a high-altitude grassland area close to Mexico City were studied. Populations of 10 species were censused using live traps in 48 sample quadrats. Within each quadrat, vegetation characterization, including complete floristic listings, cover values for species and layers and values of habitat modification, were assessed. Habitats were described according to plant communities identified using ordination and classification methods. Nine different plant communities were obtained. Densities and abundance of all small mammal species were calculated for each of the habitats classified. Peromyscus alsloni was the most abundant species in all habitats, reaching maximum densities of 55 ha−1 in pine forest with dense ground and herb layer. Peromyscus melanotis also occurred in all habitats but at lower densities (maximum 29 ha−1). Reithrodontomys megalotis was found in all habitats except in tall dense grassland. Densities for this species were generally low (1-9 ha−1) but reached 19 ha−1 in short dense grassland. All other species were largely absent from 4–8 habitats and showed very low densities (0.75–4 ha−1). The densities of the more abundant species were largely correlated with more open habitats and higher indices of habitat modification. Lower altitude grassland habitats have a greater abundance of small mammals and a higher species richness than the medium and higher altitude, physiognomically more complex habitats. Species richness was highest in tall pine-alder forest with a species-rich, dense herb layer and lowest in pine forest with dense ground and herb layers. Species richness was positively correlated with overall small mammal density.  相似文献

Gizzard shad are primarily detritivorous in Acton Lake, a 253-ha impoundment in southwestern Ohio, U.S.A. To determine the magnitude of sediment utilization by the gizzard shad population in Acton Lake. I used data on population density and age structure, daily ration, and feeding selectivity in estimating the mass of sediments processed by shad daily from April through November. At densities of 4595–10 645 fish ha−1(wet weight biomass = 90–121 kgha 1), gizzard shad could process 3.8–23.0 kg of dry sediments ha−1 day 1. On average throughout the growing season, gizzard shad could process a dry mass of sediments each day equivalent to 13% of shad wet weight biomass. Because of the high rate of sedimentation (> 700 kg dry sediment ha−1 day−1) in Acton Lake, gizzard shad can process < 4% of the freshly deposited sediments each day, and therefore are likely to have little effect on benthic community dynamics in the system.  相似文献

In the years 1989–1993, over 1000 metric tons of fish (392 kg ha−1) was removed by trawls from the Enonselkä basin in Lake Vesijärvi in order to enhance the water quality. Roach (52%) and smelt (28%) were the most abundant species in the catches. In this study, the effects of the mass removal on the previously unexploited smelt stock was assessed. The total smelt catch was c . 282 metric tons. Due to the mass removal, the density of the stock collapsed from c . 46 000 fish ha−1 in 1989 to c . 14 000 fish ha−1 in 1993 ( M =1.0). The biomass of the stock decreased from 75 kg ha−1 in 1989 to 12 kg ha−1 in 1993. The age group composition of the stock changed clearly towards the dominance of younger age groups. The male/female relationship in the samples changed from clear dominance of females to the dominance of males and the infection rate by the sporozoan parasite Glugea hertwigi declined. The growth rate of the smelt did not change considerably during the years of mass removal. The results suggest that in biomanipulated lakes several mechanisms may prevent the exploited stock from responding to the increased mortality.  相似文献

The effects of very intensive exploitation on a roach stock over 5 years are estimated. The total roach catch of the mass removal carried out with trawls was 507 metric tons (195 kg ha−1, 54% of the total catch). According to the virtual population analysis the biomass of the stock has decreased from 180 kg ha−1 in 1989 to c . 50 kg ha−1 in 1993. The production of the stock has fallen from 64 to 33 kg ha−1. The stock is dominated by younger age groups than before the mass removal. The future development of the stock is predicted by considering different levels of natural and fishing mortality. If the exploitation is stopped totally after 1993, roach biomass is predicted to double in 3 years. A constant fishing mortality rate of 0.3 (yearly catches 45–50 metric tons) would prevent the recovery of the stock, providing that 1–year–old and older roaches are exploited.  相似文献

A method of estimating the population density of roach in Tjeukemeer (21.3 km2) using 20 529 introduced fin-clipped fish is described. Fyke nets proved to be an effective method of sampling the population for marked fish during the spawning season. A total of 20 277 roach were processed during the recapturing period. The population density of roach (⋝ 14 cm) was estimated to be 1 246 458. The growth rate of roach in the lake although relatively poor (von Bertalanffy's L ∞ for males and females, 22 and 26 cm respectively) for the species was similar to that recorded in three other Friesian lakes. The mortality rate of males was higher than that of females. Logarithmic length-weight regression analyses showed that the value of the coefficient varied both within and between the sexes, that of females being higher (range 3.03–3.375) than that of males (range 2.76–3.254). Seasonal changes in the size of the coefficient were due to a disproportionate loss of gonad weight in larger fish. The fecundity of the population was comparatively high for the species.
The total production of the population was estimated to be 95 hg ha−1 of which 39 kg ha−1 was contributed by fry. In older (⋝ IV) fish the production of females (12 kg ha−1) exceeded that (2 kg ha−1) of males, due to differences in their growth and mortality rates. The relatively poor performance of roach in Tjeukemeer, in terms of biomass and production was due to a scarcity of zoobenthos and competition from other species offish. There is no evidence either from this study or the literature that the productive potential of roach in lakes is high, even though macrophytes and detritus can be consumed in significant amounts.  相似文献

1. Growth, density and δ13C of wood and leaf area were measured in two adjacent stands of 6 year-old Eucalyptus globulus growing in the 600–700 mm year–1 rainfall region of south-western Australia. Study sites were identical except for differences in the availability of water owing to physical properties of soil profiles and location of sites within the landscape.
2. Abundance of 13C (expressed as δ13C) in wood of trees growing on the drought-prone site (– 24·8‰±1·4) was greater than in other trees (– 25·8‰±1·2, P <0·001) throughout the 6 years and, with further development, the δ13C signatures of wood may become useful indices of drought-susceptibility in plantations within a few years of establishment. The seasonal pattern of δ13C of wood appeared to reflect seasonal variation in water availability and duration of cambial activity.
3. Basic density of wood of trees growing on the more drought-prone site (496±14·0 kg m–3) was reduced compared to other trees (554±5·3 kg m–3, P <0·001). δ13C of wood across boundaries of growth-rings suggested that drought stopped cambial activity resulting in less production of late wood and less dense wood.
4. The stand growing on the drought-prone site had reduced growth, wood yield and leaf area but identical specific leaf area. Annual growth was correlated with the previous season's rainfall. Together, these results suggested that within the same evaporative climate, drought reduces growth primarily by reducing leaf area and that there is a lag between onset of drought and reduced productivity.  相似文献

Vulnerability of stem xylem to cavitation was measured in 10 species of conifers using high pressure air to induce xylem embolism. Mean values of air pressure required to induce a 50% loss in hydraulic conductivity (φ50) varied enormously between species, ranging from a maximum of 14.2±0.6 MPa (corresponding to a xylem water potential of −14.2 MPa) in the semi-arid species Actinostrobus acuminatus to a minimum of 2.3±0.2 MPa in the rainforest species Dacrycarpus dacrydioides . Mean φ50 was significantly correlated with the mean rainfall of the driest quarter within the distribution of each species. The value of φ50 was also compared with leaf drought tolerance data for these species in order to determine whether xylem dysfunction during drought dictated drought response at the leaf level. Previous data describing the maximum depletion of internal CO2 concentration (ci) in the leaves of these species during artificial drought was strongly correlated with φ50 suggesting a primary role of xylem in effecting leaf drought response. The possibility of a trade-off between xylem conductivity and xylem vulnerability was tested in a sub-sample of four species, but no evidence of an inverse relationship between φ50 and either stem-area specific (Ka) or leaf-area specific conductivity (K1) was found.  相似文献

We tested two predictions required to support the hypothesis that anthropogenic acidic episodes might explain the poor biological response of upland British streams otherwise recovering from acidification: (i) that invertebrate assemblages should differ between episodic and well-buffered streams and (ii) these effects should differentiate between sites with episodes caused by anthropogenic acidification as opposed to base-cation dilution or sea-salt deposition. Chronic and episodically acidic streams were widespread, and episodes reflected acid titration more than dilution. Nonmarine sulphate (16–18% vs. 5–9%), and nitrate (4–6% vs. 1–2%) contributed more to anion loading during episodes in Wales than Scotland, and Welsh streams also had a larger proportion of total stream sulphate from nonmarine sources (64–66% vs. 35–46%). Sea-salts were rarely a major cause of episodic ANC or pH reduction during the events sampled. By contrast, streams with episodes driven by strong anthropogenic acids had lower pH (5.0±0.6) and more dissolved aluminium (288±271 μg L−1) during events than where episodes were caused by dilution (pH 5.4±0.6; 116±110 μg Al L−1) or where streams remained circumneutral (pH 6.7±1.0; 50±45 μg Al L−1). Both biological predictions were supported: invertebrate assemblages differed among sites with different episode chemistry while several acid-sensitive species were absent only where episodes reflected anthropogenic acidification. We conclude that strong acid anions – dominantly nonmarine sulphate – still cause significant episodic acidification in acid-sensitive areas of Britain and may be a sufficient explanation for slow biological recovery in many locations.  相似文献
