Wa Grotesque: Headhunting Theme Parks and the Chinese Nostalgia for Primitive Contemporaries

ABSTRACT

The Wa people have long occupied a special place in the state-directed political spectacle of minority nationalities, in both China and Burma. This fascination builds on older views of the Wa as dangerous barbarians, and closely evokes other primitivisms from around the world. In China and in neighbouring countries, state policy has recently combined with commercial entrepreneurism to cultivate a new, selective nostalgia for ‘primitive-exotic’ peoples like the Wa. In this paper, I discuss mainly China, and how the ‘wild’ Wa headhunting paraphernalia prohibited by the Chinese in the 1950s now reappear as kitsch. Some Wa of older generations see such revivals as dangerous, but younger people may embrace the revival. I discuss the new Chinese repackaging of primitive violence and the different Wa understandings of these staged exoticizations of their culture, including ways the staged representations are taken up in Wa attempts to revive aspects of their cultural past.     

Is there a post-racism? On David Theo Goldberg’s conjunctural analysis of the post-racial

ABSTRACT

I comment on David Theo Goldberg’s Are We all Postracial Yet? by interpreting it as a programmatic essay towards a new conjunctural analysis of a globalizing racism, and as an emerging globalizing dialogue against racism. In the spirit of Goldberg’s book I relate these two modes of critical engagement in order to open a global perspective through which a relational understanding of racism can be formulated with respect to two neoliberal contexts, continental Europe and the United States. To this end I draw on the work of Étienne Balibar and in particular his early consideration of ‘neo-racism’.     

Spirits of Uncertainty: Eventologies of Nature on China’s Frontiers

ABSTRACT

Studies of the environmental spirit world have been pursuing two main lines of inquiry: (1) that indigenous claims on ecological thought, including beliefs in chthonic spirits and mountain deities, are the outcome of a global process of abstraction and the commoditisation of nature which acts as technology of governmentality for the production of discursive formations through which neoliberal environmental subjectivities can emerge and (2) that the pitfalls of the nature/culture dualism can be avoided by giving priority to nonhuman subjectivities and positing sociologies of nature as subordinate to ontologies of the self-other divide or action-orienting cosmologies of local ‘nature’. The contributors of this collection engage with the spirit worlds and other invisible agents that constitute the everyday landscape of a number of ethnic groups in western China. While declining to engage with the notion of animism or subscribing to totalising ‘cosmologies’, the authors prefer to extract the eventfulness of haphazard and radically uncertain interactions with spirits or wondrous signs apt to be transformed into marvels and rumours. The ethnographies presented in this collection reveal an eventology of spirit worlds and landscape on China’s borderlands, an inquiry that – unlike history – does not study ‘events’ as such but the relation between what is deemed to be an event, a surprise, or a manifestation of wonder and what is deemed to be the innate, natural, ordinary, everyday life.     

Use of the Apple Watch iECG in adult congenital heart disease patients

IntroductionThis study evaluates the accuracy of iECGs in comparison to the gold standard ECG in adult patients with congenital heart disease and recommends the appropriate iECG derivation based on the patient's characteristics.MethodsIn 106 adults (51 female, 55 male) with congenital heart disease, a gold standard 12-lead ECG was recorded, followed by three iECGs with the Apple Watch series 4, which correspond to Einthoven leads I, II, and III. Two experienced and independent cardiologists analyzed the time intervals, amplitudes, and polarities of the ECG parameters as well as the rhythm type and correlated the patient characteristics with the iECG parameters.ResultsThe iECG parameters of all three iECG leads correlate strongly with those of the gold standard ECG, with exception of the P and T wave durations. We demonstrated that the informative value of the individual iECGs was independent of the patient's characteristics, in particular the heart axis, anatomy, and situs, even if the quality of the Einthoven III-like derivation was partially inadequate. The automatic rhythm analysis of the Apple Watch and the heart rhythm classification of a standard ECG analyzed manually by a cardiologist corresponded in 77%.ConclusioniECG recordings of adults with congenital heart disease provide comparable results with Einthoven recordings I, II, and III of the 12-lead ECG and current data encourage the use of the Apple Watch not only in patients with structurally normal hearts but also in patients with congenital heart disease.

Abstract

At the end of a symposium, it is useful to look back, both at the symposium itself and the developments that led up to the symposium. In this spirit, I thought it would be appropriate to tell the story of how I first became interested in purinergic receptors. I am recounting this story not because I believe that my audience has a burning interest in the history of my intellectual development, but rather because it illustrates the power of ideas.     

Sentimentality and the Enemies of Animal Protection

ABSTRACT

Ethical arguments promoting a higher moral status for nonhuman animals have developed a pace since the 1960s. These developments, however, have not been matched by a radical transformation in the way we treat nonhuman animals. In the 1990s, an alternative discourse emerged—the morality of care. Sympathy, empathy, compassion and pity form a family of sentiments that constitute the caring ethic. Sentimentality, the term associated with sentiment, is invariably invoked in our relationships to nonhuman animals. Although carrying positive connotations in the eighteenth century, sentimentality has since become a word of contempt and has been used to discredit our natural sympathy for nonhumans and to disparage animal protection reforms, both past and present. Here I argue for the rehabilitation of the term sentimentality and support Rorty's view that we need to create a moral sentimental education if we are to improve the world, and in particular the world as experienced by nonhuman animals. I believe that this educational enterprise should be directed at the pet-owning group, who are generally speaking already committed animal-lovers and who could be powerful agents for change in securing more justice for nonhuman animals.     

Authenticating Geographies and Temporalities: Representations of Chinese Rock in China

ABSTRACT

Since the mid-1980s the Chinese rock singer Cui Jian has stirred up the arguably tranquil waters of Chinese popular music. In his wake, a rock culture emerged in China, especially Beijing. Whereas earlier generations of Chinese rock were characterized by rather clearly rebellious poses, poses that resonate the spirit of the Great Cultural Debate that characterized Chinese culture over the 1980s, the more recent music scenes employ a wider range of visual tactics. Threading through various generations and scenes within Beijing rock culture, however, has been a quest for authenticity. In this article I will present an overview of the authenticating aspirations of Beijing rock culture. I will start off by sketching a brief history of Chinese rock, and argue that, compared to the Western claim to the origin—and therefore to the continual making—of rock, Chinese rock musicians must bear the burden of providing authenticating proof in order to avoid being labeled mere copycats.

Apart from the West versus Rest distinction, a second dichotomy that propels the politics of rock in China is Beijing rock versus pop from Hong Kong and Taiwan. Rock is constructed as the authentic voice of a new generation, whereas pop is interpreted as an overtly commercialized sound produced by the music industry. These dichotomies underlie the five authenticating tactics that I distinguish: representing what I call the rebellious, the ancient China, the communist China, the scenic, and, finally, the new China. This article will provide ample visual evidence of these authenticating tactics, and analyze critically the politics behind these tactics. I will in particular interrogate the insistence on articulations of time and place that prevail in (discourses on) Chinese rock culture and argue for a cultural studies approach that resists rather than reifies either time or place.     

Mortality experience of US veterans following service as international peacekeepers in Bosnia/Kosovo theater, 1996–2002

BackgroundBeginning in 1996 US military personnel served as peacekeeping forces in Bosnia/Kosovo. No studies have assessed the long-term post-deployment health of this US cohort. Based on the health concerns raised in studies of military personnel from other countries, this study focused on mortality due to Leukemia, respiratory disease, respiratory cancer, and heart disease.MethodsThis study compared the post-war cause-specific mortality of 53,320 veterans who deployed to Bosnia/Kosovo between 1996–2002 to that of 117,267 veterans who also served in the military between 1996–2002, but were not deployed to Bosnia/Kosovo. Expressed as standardized mortality ratios (SMR)s the cause-specific mortality for both deployed and non-deployed were compared separately to that of the US general population. Cause-specific mortality risks among Bosnia/Kosovo veterans relative to that of non-deployed veterans were assessed using Hazard Ratios (HR)s generated by Cox proportional-hazards models.ResultsThe overall mortality of both deployed and non-deployed veterans was almost half that of the US population, SMR = 0.59, 95%, C.I., 0.55–0.62 and SMR = 0.66, 95%, C.I., 0.64–0.68, respectively. Neither group of veterans had any excess of disease related mortality compared to that of the US population. Compared to non-deployed, deployed veterans did not experience any increased risks for any of the diseases of a priori interest.ConclusionIt does not appear that US military deployed to Bosnia/Kosovo have any increased risks of disease related mortality. However, this study would not have been able to detect increased risk of cancers with latency periods that exceeded the 18 years of follow-up available in this study.     

A candidate packaging signal of human rotavirus differentiating Wa‐like and DS‐1‐like genomic constellations

Rotavirus A (RVA) possesses a genome of 11 segmented RNAs. In human RVA, two major genomic constellations are represented by prototype strains Wa and DS‐1. Here packaging signals differentiating Wa‐like and DS‐1‐like genomic constellations were searched for by analyzing genomic sequences of Wa‐like and DS‐1‐like strains. One pair of 11 nucleotide sites in the coding regions of viral structural protein (VP) 2 and VP6 was found to be complementary specifically among Wa‐like strains. These sites tended to be free from base‐pairing in secondary structures of genomic segments, suggesting that they may serve as a packaging signal in Wa‐like strains.     

From Tribal Hut to Royal Palace: The Dialectic of Equality and Hierarchy in Austronesian Southeast Asia

ABSTRACT

In this paper, I will compare and contrast the Austronesian symbolic elements of the two social formations within which I have conducted extensive ethnographic and archival research, that of the highly egalitarian Buid of Mindoro, Philippines and that of the equally hierarchical Makassar of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. I will demonstrate both that their cosmological structures are built out of common symbolic elements and that these structures could be used to legitimate vastly different political systems. The common symbolic elements included a gendered cosmos inhabited by a series of parallel societies composed of animal, human and spirit subjects; the conceptualisation of human sociality as generated by shared experience within a nested series of bounded spaces; and the ability of certain agents to move between these spaces by way of specialised training, vehicles and portals.     

Synthesis,in vitro and in vivo antitumor and antiviral activity of novel 1-substituted benzimidazole derivatives

Abstract

A novel series of 5-nitro-1H-benzimidazole derivatives substituted at position 1 by heterocyclic rings was synthesized. Cytotoxicity and antiviral activity of the new compounds were tested. Compound 3 was more active than doxorubicin against A-549, HCT-116 and MCF-7. However, compound 3 showed no activity against human liver carcinoma Hep G-2 cell line. Compounds 9 and 17b (E) showed potency near to doxorubicin against the four cell lines. The acute toxicity of compound 9 on liver cancer induced in rats was determined in vivo. Interestingly, it showed restoration activity of liver function and pathology towards normal as compared to the cancer-bearing rats induced by DENA. Compounds 17a (Z), 17b (E) and 18a (Z) were the most promising compounds for their antiviral activity against rotavirus Wa strain.     

LAMP3 (CD208) Expression in Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Epithelial Dysplasia of the Oral Cavity and Clinicopathological Characteristics of Unfavorable Prognosis

Background:This study aimed to evaluate LAMP3 (CD208) gene expression in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and dysplastic oral epithelium by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and compare LAMP3 expression in different disease grades and stages.Methods:In this study, 60 OSCC and dysplastic oral epithelium samples were obtained from the Mashhad University of Medical Sciences together with their demographic and clinicopathological documents. LAMP3 expression was measured by qPCR.Results:LAMP3 expression was significantly greater in OSCC than in dysplasia samples (P=0.001), in grade III OSCC than in grades I and II, and also greater in advanced than in early OSCC disease stage (P=0.001).Conclusion:The significantly greater LAMP3 expression in OSCC than in dysplastic epithelium indicates a role for LAMP3 in carcinogenesis in oral mucosa. Our results suggest LAMP3 may be useful as an anticancer target and/or to predict disease pathogenesis in OSCC patient’s cells.Key Words: Clinicopathological, Grade, Epithelial dysplasia, LAMP3, Stage, Squamous cell carcinoma.     

Use of the Free Thyroxine Index to Refine the Lower Limit of a Free Thyroxine Immunoassay for Detection of Secondary Hypothyroidism

ObjectiveTo determine the utility of measuring free T₄ index (FT₄I) in patients with low free T₄ (FT₄) levels using immunoassay and normal thyroid-stimulating hormone for the evaluation of secondary hypothyroidism.MethodsWe performed a retrospective medical chart review of patients seen at a single institution as outpatients who had a simultaneously normal thyroid-stimulating hormone level, low FT₄ level, and any FT₄I measured between June 2014 and October 2016. Demographic, laboratory, and imaging data were collected. Using FT₄I as the reference for diagnosis of hypothyroidism, the sensitivity and specificity of the FT₄ immunoassay’s lower-limit thresholds were determined. Within each threshold group, available brain imaging and biochemical evaluation were categorized according to the presence or absence of pituitary disease.ResultsA total of 155 sets of result pairs (FT₄ and FT₄I) performed on 118 subjects were analyzed. The lower limit of a normal FT₄ level by immunoassay at this institution was 0.93 ng/dL, though all pairs with FT₄ ≥0.89 ng/dL had a normal FT₄I. All pairs with FT₄ ≤0.67 ng/dL had a low FT₄I. No pituitary macroadenomas were identified in any subject, though the rates of pituitary imaging in this patient sample were low.ConclusionPatients with a borderline low FT₄ level by immunoassay often have normal FT₄I. In such patients at our center, significant structural and biochemical pituitary pathology was uncommon.     

Crohn's disease complicated by hepatitis B virus successfully treated with the use of adsorptive depletion of myeloid lineage leucocytes to suppress inflammatory cytokine profile

Background aimsIn patients with inflammatory bowel disease infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV), immunosuppressive therapy required to suppress active inflammatory bowel disease may promote HBV reactivation.MethodsA 27-year-old corticosteroid-naive woman with Crohn's disease (CD) activity index of 249.8 complicated by HBV infection was offered Entecavir to control HBV reactivation during immunosuppressive therapy for CD. The patient refused Entecavir, fearing that it might adversely affect her pregnancy outcome. Instead, we applied intensive granulocyte/monocyte adsorptive apheresis (GMA) at two sessions per week to deplete inflammatory cytokine-producing leucocytes as an immunosuppressive therapy in this case.ResultsGMA induced stable remission (CD activity index, I 105) and endoscopic improvement without HBV reactivation or safety concern. Furthermore, CD remission was paralleled by suppression of tumor necrosis factor and interleukin as measured in serum samples.ConclusionsImmunosuppressive therapy required to treat an active CD potentially can promote HBV reactivation and worsen liver function. In this study involving a CD case complicated by chronic HBV infection, intensive GMA as a non-pharmacologic treatment intervention was associated with clinical remission and endoscopic improvement without HBV reactivation. Furthermore, GMA was well-tolerated and was without any safety concern. However, suppression of tumor necrosis and interleukin-6by GMA in this clinical setting is potentially very interesting.     

<Emphasis Type="Italic">Wa5</Emphasis> is a novel ENU-induced antimorphic allele of the epidermal growth factor receptor

Mice heterozygous for the N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea-induced Waved-5 (Wa5) mutation, isolated in a screen for dominant, visible mutations, exhibit a wavy coat similar to mice homozygous for the recessive Tgfa^wa1 or Egfr^wa2 alleles. In this study, we show that Wa5 is a new allele of Egfr (Egfr^Wa5) containing a missense mutation within the coding region for the highly conserved DFG motif of the tyrosine kinase domain. In vivo analysis of placental development, modification of Apc^Min tumorigenesis, and levels of EGF-dependent EGFR phosphorylation demonstrates that Egfr^Wa5 functions as an antimorphic allele, recapitulating many abnormalities associated with reduced EGFR activity. Furthermore, Egfr^wa5 enhances Egfr^Wa2 compound or Tgfa^tm1Dcl double mutants exposing additional EGFR-dependent phenotypes. In vitro characterization shows that the antimorphic property of Egfr^Wa5 is caused by a kinase-dead receptor acting as a dominant negative.     

Preliminary studies of Eutorna phaulocosma (Lepidoptera: Oecophoridae) in New Zealand

Abstract

In 1978 George C. Williams predicted that the last two decades of this century would be a fabulous age, and that evolutionary biology would provide critical insights into the processes of change in the biological world. He suggested that these might come to be described as the “good old days”. I am not so sure that this is likely, but I am very sure that it will be a turbulent time. I think also that those biologists who attended the recent SYSTANZ meeting on evolution must by now be equally convinced. The conference was punctuated by heated debates on major topics such as Darwinian and neo-Darwinian theory, vicariance biogeography, and teleology, to mention but a few.     

Roles of humanin and derivatives on the pathology of neurodegenerative diseases and cognition

BackgroundAlzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are common among neurodegenerative diseases, but investigations into novel therapeutic approaches are currently limited. Humanin (HN) is a mitochondrial-derived peptide found in brain tissues of patients with familial AD and has been increasingly investigated in AD and other neurodegenerative diseases.Scope of reviewIn this review, we summarize and discuss the effects of HN on the pathology of neurodegenerative diseases and cognition based on several studies from preclinical to clinical models. The association between cardiac ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury and brain are also included. Findings from in vitro studies and those involving mice provide the most fundamental information on the impact of HN and its potential association with clinical studies.Major conclusionsHN plays a considerable role in countering the progression and neuropathology of AD. Inhibition and reduction of oxidative stress and neuroinflammation of the original amyloid hypothesis is the mainstay mechanism. Multiple intracellular mechanisms will be elucidated, including those involved in the anti-apoptotic signaling cascades, the insulin signaling pathway, and mitochondrial function, and especially autophagic activity. These beneficial roles are also found following cardiac I/R injury. Cognitive improvement was found to be related to maintenance of synaptic integrity and neurotransmitter modulation. Small humanin-like peptide 2 demonstrates the neuroprotective effects in PD and AMD via prevention of mitochondrial loss.General significanceComprehensive knowledge of HN effects on cognition and neurodegenerative diseases emphasizes its potential to treat a viable disease, as it ameliorates the pathogenesis of the disease.     

新冠肺炎疫情防控背景下医院文化建设的思路与方法探析

摘要：随着疫情的不断蔓延，新冠肺炎目前已成为全球范围内共同关注的重大公共问题。新冠肺炎疫情出现之后，医院广大医务人员积极响应党和国家的号召，义无反顾地投入疫情防控"战役"之中，将救死扶伤以及大爱无疆等新时代医疗卫生职业精神内化成"抗疫精神"；该精神不但反映了医务人员的责任以及担当，而且是医院可持续发展的有效动力，更是医院文化建设的关键内容。医院文化主要是指各级医疗机构在开展医疗工作过程中潜移默化所形成的一种特殊文化氛围和价值观，不仅在公共卫生体系中占据重要地位，同时可能直接或间接影响医院长期竞争力的发展。尤其是在目前新冠肺炎疫情防控之中，文化建设可发挥着特殊的作用，有效提高服务效率以及服务质量。本文结合疫情防控背景下的医院相关疫情防控措施，探析医院抗疫文化建设的思路和策略，以提高医院品牌形象以及业内影响力，继而促进医院整体文化建设的更深、更高层次发展。     

Spirits out of place: relational landscapes and environmental change in East Kalimantan,Indonesia

This article examines interaction with spirits among the Luangan, a group of shifting cultivators in Indonesian Borneo. Through examples of different forms of Luangan spirit interaction, it interrogates the relationship between the spirit world and the natural environment, with special reference to what happens when the latter undergoes dramatic change. Inspired by Eduardo Kohn's understanding of how the spirit world is semiotically embedded within the rainforest environment, I explore how relations with nonhumans reflect historical and ongoing experiences of life and sociality in the forest and human domain, while superimposing a virtual relational landscape upon the natural landscape. It is proposed that spirit communication offers a means of refiguring human lives and alleviating debilitation, and that recurrent rituals enable Luangans to virtually maintain relations with unseen beings of the local environment, even where it has been thoroughly transformed through oil palm cultivation.
