Co-existence among potentially competing species can be favoured by niche specialisation and/or by reducing the overall intensity of competition via aggregated utilisation of fragmented resources. We investigated the respective roles of niche specialisation and aggregation in the case of nine congeneric monogenean parasites on the gills of Roach (Rutilus rutilus L.) belonging to the genus Dactylogyrus. The position of each individual parasite of the nine Dactylogyrus species was recorded. Niche breadth and niche overlap of parasite species were estimated. Comparative methods, which take into account phylogenetic information of the analysed species, were used. We reconstructed a phylogeny of the nine Dactylogyrus species based on morphological characters. We used the 'aggregation model of co-existence' in the model to test if species co-existence is facilitated when intraspecific aggregation exceeds interspecific aggregation. We observed a lack of negative correlation in abundance between pairs of parasites, and a negative correlation between niche size and parasite aggregation, for both intraspecific and interspecific aggregation. Our comparative analysis showed that parasite abundance is positively correlated with niche breadth. Then parasite abundance, and not interactions between Dactylogyrus species, seems to be the most important factor determining niche size This result gives some support to niche segregation by specialisation. Niche size was negatively correlated with both intraspecific and interspecific aggregation. No relationship was found between an increase of interspecific aggregation with an increase of niche overlapping, which suggests that competition may play little role. A lack of competition could be also confirmed by the lack of negative correlation in abundance between species pairs. A parsimony analysis of the evolution of gill distribution indicates a change in one parameter of the niche (arch, segment and/or area) at each branching event.  相似文献

The ectoparasite fauna of two damselfishes, Stegastes nigricans and Dascyllus aruanus, from Moorea Island in French Polynesia was investigated. Gills of these damselfishes were infected with congeneric Monopisthocotylea Monogenea belonging to the genus Haliotrema. Stegastes nigricans were found to harbour a guild of three Haliotrema species whereas only one species inhabited D. aruanus. Microhabitat distribution, inter- and intraspecific competition and interspecific associations on the gill were studied. Observations on site preference revealed no spatial segregation between the three congeneric species inhabiting the gills of S. nigricans. Juvenile and adult monogeneans of that guild occurred on the same microhabitat. The dominant species Haliotrema sp. 1 did not expand on the microhabitat when the intensity of infection increased. Interspecific association tests revealed positive and negative associations. Haliotrema sp. 4 expanded its distribution on the gills of Dascyllus aruanus when the intensity of infection increased suggesting the likelihood of intraspecific competition. Juvenile and adult monogeneans of Haliotrema sp. 4 appeared to segregate as a result of intraspecific competition. This competition may exist to enhance resource availability when the gill habitat is limited. Overlaps between niche breadth and species microhabitat were revealed for monogenean species inhabiting S. nigricans. Interspecific competition did not appear to play an important role in the distribution of S. nigricans congeneric ectoparasites. Reinforcement of reproductive barriers may have led to the avoidance of hybridization.  相似文献

Two monogeneans species, Polylabris mamaevi Ogawa & Egusa, 1980 and Tetrancistrum nebulosi Young, 1967, are sympatric on the gills of Siganus fuscescens (Houttugn, 1782) in the South China Sea. An investigation into their distribution on the host's gills based on monthly samples from both wild and caged populations revealed that these 2 species co-occurred on the same gill arches, but they were segregated. P. mamaevi attached to the distal half of the gill filaments, whereas T. nebulosi attached to the proximal half. This difference may partly be attributed to microhabitat specialization. Microhabitat distributions were intensity dependent for both species. As intensity increased, monogeneans were increasingly found on the second, third, and even fourth gill arches, and niche breadths increased. The changes in distribution and niche breadths at the host gill arch level in relation to differences in host size and sampling period were considered to represent a functional response to increased intensity. Differences in host resources, in either net-caged or wild populations, did not significantly influence the parasite distributions at the host gill arch level. Simultaneous infections of these 2 species were common, but there was no evidence of negative interspecific interactions.  相似文献

Ramasamy P., Ramalingam K., Hanna R. E. B. and Halton D. W. 1985. Microhabitat of gill parasites (Monogenea and Copepoda) of teleosts (Scomberoides spp.). International Journal for Parasitology15: 385–397. The parasites Vallisia indica, Allodiscocotyla chorinemi, Heterapta chorinemi, and Dionchus remorae exhibited site specificity on the gills of Scomberoides commersonianus, S. tol, S. lysan and S. tala, whereas the copepod Caligus sp. did not. Observations on site preference revealed microhabitat differences along the length of gill filaments, along the anterio-posterior axis of the gill, between external and internal gill filaments and on different gill arches. Site preference varied with parasite density on each gill and host. An interspecific association test between pairs of species revealed, in some cases, a positive association, and in other cases a negative association. There were apparently no association? between certain pairs of species. A comparison of intensity within pairs of parasite species infecting the same host revealed either an inverse or a direct correlation. The numerical dominance and prevalence of parasites differed on each host species. This study indicates that intra- and interspecific competition may occur among the gill parasites. The direction and speed of ventilation water-currents and certain intrinsic factors of the parasite themselves may determine their microhabitat restriction on the gills.  相似文献

Heterogeneous exposure to parasites may contribute to host species differentiation. Hosts often harbour multiple parasite species which may interact and thus modify each other’s effects on host fitness. Antagonistic or synergistic interactions between parasites may be detectable as niche segregation within hosts. Consequently, the within-host distribution of different parasite taxa may constitute an important axis of infection variation among host populations and species. We investigated the microhabitat distributions and species interactions of gill parasites (four genera) infecting 14 sympatric cichlid species in Lake Victoria, Tanzania. We found that the two most abundant ectoparasite genera (the monogenean Cichlidogyrus spp. and the copepod Lamproglena monodi) were non-randomly distributed across the host gills and their spatial distribution differed between host species. This may indicate microhabitat selection by the parasites and cryptic differences in the host–parasite interaction among host species. Relationships among ectoparasite genera were synergistic: the abundances of Cichlidogyrus spp. and the copepods L. monodi and Ergasilus lamellifer tended to be positively correlated. In contrast, relationships among morphospecies of Cichlidogyrus were antagonistic: the abundances of morphospecies were negatively correlated. Together with niche overlap, this suggests competition among morphospecies of Cichlidogyrus. We also assessed the reproductive activity of the copepod species (the proportion of individuals carrying egg clutches), as it may be affected by the presence of other parasites and provide another indicator of the species specificity of the host–parasite relationship. Copepod reproductive activity did not differ between host species and was not associated with the presence or abundance of other parasites, suggesting that these are generalist parasites, thriving in all cichlid species examined from Lake Victoria.  相似文献

We examined seasonal changes in microhabitat use by the murid rodents Akodon azarae and Calomys laucha in agroecosystems of the former pampa region of Argentina. In summer, trap data showed that both species had low densities and were almost equally distributed between the mature cropfields and their surrounding weedy borders. Analysis of vegetation at the trap sites revealed no selection for microhabitats at the borders, whereas in the cropfields both species shared preferences for covered microhabitats. In contrast, winter data revealed a sharp habitat segregation, being Calomys numerically dominant in post-harvest cropfields and Akodon more abundant in borders. Moreover, there were clear differences in microhabitat selection at the borders, A. azarae occupying the more covered microhabitats and C. laucha the less covered. Breadth and overlap of niches were calculated using principal component analysis, in order to recognize interspecific competition and its influence on community niche space. Available evidence indicates that the structure of this rodent community is strongly influenced by seasonal changes in habitat stucture and rodent abundance. The socially dominant A. azarae retains the best part of the available niche space, a fact becoming more evident under the harsh winter conditions.  相似文献

The gills of the humbug, Dascyllus aruanus (Pomacentridae), were infected by a monogenean genus Haliotrema at a high prevalence (83%) but with a low mean intensity (5.6 worms/fish). All the gill arches of 365 fish, caught on the fringing reef of Moorea Island (French Polynesia), were examined for parasites. Each hemibranch was divided into 12 subequal sections. Monogeneans showing microhabitat overlap were defined as couples. Hosts with low intensity of infection (fewer than 5 monogeneans per gill) were selected and couples were recorded. Among the 37 hosts harboring 2 worms on their gills, 18 fish were infected with these 2 monogeneans on the same gill side of the body; 50% (n = 9) of these harbored monogeneans within the same gill arch and 55% (n = 5) of these last fish showed individual parasites within the same section of the gill. In the case of hosts with few monogeneans (3 and 4 individuals; n = 37) on the same arch, more than 40% (n = 16) harbored worms in couples. There may be some chemical communication that allowed these monogeneans to migrate toward each other and thus enhance mating success. Mating rendezvous appears to be a more important factor than site location for these gill monogeneans.  相似文献

Dactylogyrus species (Dactylogyridae: Monogenea) are a group of monogenean gill parasites that are highly specific to freshwater fish of the family Cyprinidae. Dactylogyrus species were sampled from 19 cyprinids and one percid collected in Europe. Using partial 18S rDNA and ITS1 sequences, a phylogeny of 51 Dactylogyrus species was reconstructed to investigate the patterns of parasite speciation and diversification. Three main Dactylogyrus lineages were recognized from all phylogenetic trees, that is, analysis of 18S rDNA alone and combined 18SrDNA and ITS1. The first lineage associates the Dactylogyrus species of Cyprinus carpio and Carassius auratus of the Cyprininae; the second associates Dactylogyrus species of the Gobioninae, Pseudorasbora parva of the Rasborinae, and Ctenopharyngodon idella of the Cyprininae; and the third associates Dactylogyrus species of the Leuciscinae and Alburninae and Barbus barbus of the Cyprininae. Our results suggest that the genus Dactylogyrus is of quite recent origin and that these three lineages separated from each other in a very short period of time. Host subfamily mapping onto the parasite tree inferred from analysis of the combined dataset showed that the Cyprininae could be plesiomorphic hosts for Dactylogyrus. Dactylogyrus parasites would have secondarily colonized the Percidae and representatives of the Leuciscinae, Alburninae, Gobioninae, and Rasborinae. Comparison of host and parasite phylogenetic relationships indicated that a very high number of parasite duplications occurred within two of the three Dactylogyrus lineages. Dactylogyrus diversification can be mainly explained by sympatric intrahost speciation events that seem to be correlated to strict host specificity. Moreover, the present study shows that the congeneric parasites speciating within one host tend to occupy niches within hosts differing at least in one niche parameter.  相似文献

Assuming that differences or similarities in morphology among congeneric parasite species living in the same habitat are not a random pattern, several hypotheses explaining morphological differences were tested: (i) reproductive isolation, (ii) niche restriction resulting from competition, and (iii) niche specialization. Congeneric monogenean (platyhelminth) ectoparasites parasitizing the gills of one host species were used as an ecological model. Morphometric distances of the attachment organ and morphometric distances of the copulatory organ between species pairs were calculated, Levin's niche size and Renkonen niche overlap indices were applied. Our results support the prediction that the function of niche segregation is to achieve reproductive isolation of related species in order to prevent hybridization (reinforcement of reproductive barriers). Parasite species living in the same niche differ greatly in the size of copulatory organ. Moreover, species coexistence is facilitated by an increase in morphometric distances of copulatory organ and niche centre distances. Our results also show that species living in overlapping niches have similar attachment organs, which supports the prediction that morphologically similar species have the same ecological requirements within one host and suggests small effects of interspecific competition for the evolution of morphological diversity of attachment organs. Specialist adaptations also seem to facilitate species coexistence and affect the niche distribution within host species. Parasite species that can colonize more than one host species, i.e. generalists, occupy more distant niches within host species than strictly host-specific parasites. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 76, 125–135.  相似文献

Given the importance attributed to the occupation of space in benthic coral reef communities, this study asks the question: are any particular microhabitat types limiting resources for an assemblage of worm-eating gastropods on Heron reef (Great Barrier Reef). Microhabitat resource use was measured on three occasions, separated by 12 and 20-month periods. The gastropod populations were typical of those of other Indo-Pacific sites with respect to mean shell size and density. Fluctuations in species' size and density are assumed to have not significantly influenced availability of microhabitat resources. Gastropods occurred mainly in the structurally complex “refuge” microhabitats during the day and showed an increased abundance in smooth, exposed, “foraging” microhabitat nocturnally. Nassarius gaudiosus is the most extreme microhabitat specialist diurnally and the most extreme microhabitat generalist nocturnally. A similar, although less pronounced trend was exhibited by other gastropod species. Microhabitat niche overlap was high for Conus coronatus, C. miliaris, C. flavidus, Vasum turbinellus and N. gaudiosus at night and was also high during the day for all these species except N. gaudiosus, which showed little overlap with other gastropod species diurnally. Using gastropod abundance data from all samples, and independently derived microhabitat abundance data, multiple regression analysis demonstrated:
  1. A significant relationship between the abundances of N. gaudiosus, C. coronatus, and C. flavidus and the abundance of microhabitat 2 (sand under rocks=“refuge”).
  2. No positive association between gastropod abundance and the abundance of microhabitat 7a (thin layer of algal-bound sand on reef limestone).
Only N. gaudiosus is abundant in microhabitat 2. Therefore it is concluded that, with some exceptions, microhabitat abundance does not have a significant influence, directly or indirectly, on gastropod abundance. It is possible that density-independent mortality is maintaining gastropod densities below that at which competitive interactions, with respect to microhabitats, have significant effects on the gastropods' use of those resources.  相似文献

Studies on species of Monogenea have shown that these parasites often infect only a specific host species, genus, or family, and that they attach only to specific sites within hosts. Few studies, however, examine habitat specificity across host and habitat scales. In this study, we focused on host, macrohabitat, and microhabitat specificity in the monogenean diplozoon Afrodiplozoon polycotyleus, a gill parasite of African cyprinid fishes, Barbus spp. We first compared the occurrence of A. polycotyleus among 4 species of Barbus from a single location in the Mpanga River of western Uganda; Barbus neumayeri was the only species infected with the parasite. We then quantified parasite prevalence and mean abundance in B. neumayeri from a series of river and swamp sites in the same drainage, looking for environmental predictors of diplozoon prevalence and abundance over a broad habitat scale. The prevalence and mean abundance of A. polycotyleus on gills of B. neumayeri was highest in the hypoxic swamp habitat, followed by the intermittent stream sites, and faster flowing river sites. Parasite prevalence and mean abundance across habitats were negatively related to both water current and dissolved oxygen concentration. Within hosts, A. polycotyleus was strongly specific among hemibranchs in poorly oxygenated water and was found on arch 2, hemibranch 4 most frequently.  相似文献

The comparative distribution and abundance of the two congeneric goshawks of New Caledonia, the White-bellied Goshawk Accipiter haplochrous and the Brown Goshawk A. fasciatus vigilax , were studied on 100 1-km2 sample quadrats spread randomly over the island. The White-bellied Goshawk is a well-differentiated endemic forest-dwelling species, presumably of older origin than the morphologically little-differentiated island subspecies of the Brown Goshawk, which is restricted to open habitats. The two species exhibit ecological characteristics attributed to the so-called insular syndrome; these characteristics were more pronounced in the White-bellied than in the Brown Goshawk. The densities of both species were much higher than any density of the same or similar species ever recorded on a continent. Their habitat and foraging niches were broad. The two species were clearly segregated by habitat, their distribution overlapping only in semi-forested lowland areas where the White-bellied tended to encroach more on the habitat of the Brown Goshawk than the reverse. Possible determinants of their abundance, niche breadth and interspecific segregation are discussed, as well as the consequences for their conservation. The occurrence in New Caledonia of two additional congeneric species recently extinct and the existence of three other pairs of congeneric bird species with similar relationships are also emphasized.  相似文献

Distribution of a monogenean parasitic helminth Salsuginus thalkeni on the gills of the fish Fundulus zebrinus is described by calculation of mean positions and niche breadths on the linear spatial resource gradients gill filament length, gill arch length and arch number. All distributions are given for parasites in the presence and absence of various combinations of potential competitors, namely the 6 other parasite species that occupy the same host species. Filament niche breadth was narrowest in the absence of potential competitors; breadth on arch was widest in the presence of potential competitors. Breadth on both resources was correlated positively with mean number of parasites per individual. Arch breadth exhibited cyclic seasonal changes, being lowest in early to mid-summer. Mean position exhibited no repeated pattern of variation on either resource. The results are considered consistent with predictions about the niche structures of species in unsaturated noninteractive specialist communities.  相似文献

1.?We tested the hypotheses that feeding guild structure of beetle assemblages changed with different arboreal microhabitats and that these differences were consistent across rainforest tree species. 2.?Hand collection and beating techniques were used from the gondola of the Australian Canopy Crane to collect beetles from five microhabitats (mature leaves, flush leaves, flowers, fruit and suspended dead wood) within the rainforest canopy. A simple randomization procedure was implemented to test whether the abundances of each feeding guild on each microhabitat were different from that expected based on a null hypothesis of random distribution of individuals across microhabitats. 3.?Beetles from different feeding guilds were not randomly distributed, but congregated on those microhabitats that are likely to provide the highest concentrations of their preferred food sources. Herbivorous beetles, in particular, were over-represented on flowers and flush foliage and under-represented on mature leaves and dead wood. Proportional numbers of species within each feeding guild were remarkably uniform across tree species for each microhabitat, but proportional abundances of feeding guilds were all significantly non-uniformly distributed between host tree species, regardless of microhabitat, confirming patterns previously found for arthropods in trees in temperate and tropical forests. 4.?These results show that the canopy beetle community is partitioned into discrete assemblages between microhabitats and that this partitioning arises because of differences in feeding guild structure as a function of the diversity and the temporal and spatial availability of resources found on each microhabitat.  相似文献

Differences among sympatric lizard species usually result from differences in the use of three resources: space, time and food or some combination of these three. However, differences in resource utilization among sympatric species may simply reflect their specific ecological needs rather than competitive pressures. In this study, we analyzed the temporal, spatial and food niche of two congeneric teiids (Cnemidophorus abaetensis and C. ocellifer) living sympatrically in the "restinga" habitat of Abaeté in the Salvador Municipality, Bahia State, Brazil to assess the degree of niche differentiation among them. The whiptail species overlapped considerably in an hourly activity (Ojk = 0.93), in microhabitat use (Ojk = 0.97) and in the prey items consumed (Ojk = 0.89). Differences in amount of vegetation in the microhabitats used by both lizard species may have contributed to differences in the activity period and in the distribution of the main prey eaten by these lizards which may, in turn, facilitate their coexistence in Abaeté. Although sympatric C. ocellifer and C. abaetensis in Abaeté differed only slightly in their use of microhabitats, period of activity and diet, the most important niche dimension segregating the two species seemed to be the food niche.  相似文献

Host and microhabitat or site selection is universal among parasites, although to varying degrees between species and groups. The selection of a specific site by a copepod parasite is determined by a set of mostly unknown factors. The spatial distribution of Kroyeria dispar, Kroyeria papillipes and Eudactylina pusilla on the gill filaments of Galeocerdo cuvier was investigated to determine whether niche restriction occurs in the different planes on the gills. In order to do this, the complete sets of left gills of 14 tiger shark hosts were examined and the species, location (hemibranch, horizontal distribution, longitudinal distribution), orientation and gender of each copepod noted. Kroyeria dispar was dominant on most hosts and exhibited a prevalence of 100% and a mean intensity of 73 individuals per shark. Kroyeria papillipes was dominant on the remaining hosts and displayed a prevalence of 78.6% and a mean intensity of 33 individuals per shark while E. pusilla had a prevalence of 85.7% and a mean intensity of 20 individuals per shark on the examined hosts. No evidence of intra- or interspecific competition or microniche restriction was found even though all three species occupy the same fundamental niche. However, distributional preference was observed, and the compound populations of all three species on tiger sharks were aggregated, most likely as a result of their need to reproduce.
