Eels ( Anguilla anguilla ) which were exposed to copper-contaminated fresh water (30–60 ρg Cu/I) died with signs of vibriosis ( Vibrio anguillarum). Eels kept in non-contaminated fresh water (<6ρgCu/I) remained healthy. V. anguillarum was shown to be present in the eels with symptoms of vibriosis. We suggest V. anguillarum is a common inhabitant of eels and copper can change a commensal association between fish and bacterium to one of pathogenicity.  相似文献

Net water fluxes in the isolated gills of Anguilla anguilla were studied during incubation in fresh water (FW) and in sea water (SW). When incubated in FW, water entry was greater in SW-adapted eels than in FW-adapted eels. In contrast, water loss in SW was less in SW-adapted eels than in FW-adapted eels. Rectification of osmotic water fluxes was observed for both FW and SW-adapted eels, net water fluxes in the mucosal-serosal (m-s) direction being greater than those in the opposite (s-m) direction. These results indicate that adaptation to a given external medium brings about a decrease in the osmotic permeability so that water gain in FW or water loss in SW is minimal.  相似文献

The effect of salinity on hatching, larval survival and infectivity of Anguillicola crassus was studied under experimental conditions using eggs obtained from naturally infected eels. Egg hatching rate, second-stage larval survival and larval infectivity were maximal in fresh water and declined with increase in salinity. Larvae survived up to 100 d in fresh water, 70 d in 50 % sea water and 40 d in 100% sea water. Infectivity experiments demonstrated that salinity influenced transmission success throughout the life cycle by decreasing total infectivity of the larval population in utero within female A. crassus and when larvae were free-living in the aquatic environment. Infectivity was age-dependent in relation to salinity. Larvae were infective to intermediate and paratenic hosts for up to 80 d in fresh water, 21 d in 50% sea water and up to 8 d in 100% sea water. The data confirm field observations that infection levels decrease with an increase in salinity. The study contributes to experimental verification of the colonization abilities of A. crassus and supports the hypothesis that A. crassus can be disseminated and transmitted in brackish water. The importance of regular monitoring and stringent hygiene practices in the transportation of eels is emphasized.  相似文献

The androgen 11-ketotestosterone (11KT) is associated with the physiological and morphological changes that occur during the transformation of sedentary ('yellow') freshwater eels (Anguilla spp.) into their migratory form ('silver') prior to their spawning migration in the ocean. In this study, we investigate the possible role of 11KT in modulating behaviors consistent with downstream migration; i.e., downstream and salinity preference in the New Zealand shortfinned eel (A. australis). Unlike silvering, 11KT did not induce preference for downstream locations, scored as presence at the downstream ends of 35 m raceways. Likewise, there was no evidence for increased salinity preference in 11KT-treated yellow eels, scored as preference for sea water over fresh water in a choice experiment. However, the 11KT treatment induced higher frequency of movements between fresh water and sea water, which may indicate restlessness.  相似文献

Glass eels and elvers of the American eel were negatively buoyant. Those adapted to sea water were more dense (1.072 ± 0.001 g cm−3) than those adapted to fresh water (1.061 ± 0.001 g cm−3). Adaptation to fresh water increased relative body water content, but did not account for the observed decrease in total body density. Histological examination revealed the presence of a potentially functional swimbladder in the glass eels, although this hydrostatic organ did not becomegas-filled until after freshwater residency had occurred. Calculation of lift as used in the selective tidal transport mechanism suggests that hydrodynamic compensation for horizontal swimming during the estuarine phase of migration is energetically adaptive.  相似文献

The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is a catadromous fish that spawns in the Sargasso Sea. As larvae, eels cross the Atlantic Ocean and reach the continental slope of Europe, where they metamorphose into post‐larval glass eels. These reach the continent, where some enter fresh water, some remain in marine waters, and others move between fresh and marine waters. After 5–25 years, as adult silver eels, they migrate back from fresh water to the Sargasso Sea to spawn and die. The glass eel stage is a critical step during which the eels cross the continental shelf and recruit to estuaries, where they facultatively transition to fresh water. Extensive research has been conducted to understand the behavioural mechanisms and environmental cues that aid and guide glass eels' migration. Glass eels follow odours and salinity gradients, they avoid light, and they change orientation and depth according to the tides. Recent work revealed that European glass eels also use Earth's magnetic field and lunar cues to orient. However, while we understand many aspects of their orientation behaviour, a unifying theory describing how glass eels migrate from the continental slope to fresh water is lacking. The goal of this review is to develop a comprehensive hypothesis on the migration of European glass eels, integrating previous knowledge on their orientation behaviour with recent findings on magnetic and celestial orientation. This review follows the journey of a hypothetical glass eel, describing the nature and the role of orientation cues involved at each step. I propose that, although glass eels have the sensory capacity to use multiple cues at any given time, their migration is based on a hierarchical succession of orientation mechanisms dictated by the physical properties of the environments that they occupy: (i) lunar and magnetic cues in pelagic water; (ii) chemical and magnetic cues in coastal areas; and (iii) odours, salinity, water current and magnetic cues in estuaries.  相似文献

Prior to making inferences from otoliths about the residence time and growth rate of glass-phase anguillid eels Anguilla in estuaries, it is necessary to validate the deposition rate of microincrements in the otoliths. Glass-phase American eels Anguilla rostrata (Lesueur), which had been captured near the mouth of an estuary in Maine, USA, prior to freshwater exposure, deposited increments at a daily rate at ambient temperature and salinity in a field and laboratory study. The regression for glass eels not possessing a transition ring was: I=0.976(D-1)+0.434, where I is the number of otolith increments distal to a fluorescent mark placed on the otolith at the beginning of the experiment, and D is the number of days in the experiment, which ranged from 7 to 49. The slope was not significantly different than 1. Unexpectedly, many glass eels deposited the transition ring during the experiment, although this ring had previously been thought to mark entry into fresh water. The regression for these glass eels was: I=0.961(D-1)-3.880, and the slope was not significantly different than 1. The negative intercept suggests that approximately 4 days were lost from the otolith record during deposition of the ring. This study demonstrated daily deposition of increments prior to freshwater exposure and demonstrated that deposition of the transition ring is not linked to freshwater entry.  相似文献

Silver eels Anguilla japonica ( I G 1·5–3·5) had more developed rete mirabile, gas gland and submucosa than yellow eels ( I G 0·4–1·5) and the development of swim bladder components increased with sexual maturity only in the early maturation process ( I G 3·5). These observations indicate that the Japanese eel develops its swim bladder in either the river or shallow sea water and leaves for the open sea after the swim bladder has become adapted to a deeper-sea environment.  相似文献

In late 1987, immature Anguillicola crassus were reported for the first time in Britain from eels from two river systems. By late 1988, gravid adults were present in a number of rivers in the east of England in two discrete centres of distribution: one in East Anglia correlated with the route taken by lorries exporting eels to the continent, and one in the R. Thames correlated with the import of eels to London. The parasite was firmly established in the R. Trent, where prevalence levels reached 100% in some places. Laboratory investigations showed that adult parasites and their eggs remained viable even after infected eels had been maintained for 4 weeks in 100% sea water. Hatching of eggs declined with increasing salinity, but was not totally inhibited by sea water. Survival and infectivity of freeliving second stage larvae were maximal in natural fresh water (95% survival for 4 months, and 50% still infective to copepod intermediate hosts after 70 days), but declined in alkaline water and with increased salinity. Nevertheless, in 100% sea water, 50% of larvae were still infective after 8 days. Specificity to the intermediate host was low, and eels of all sizes could be infected. These characteristics, plus a high reproductive potential, give the parasite exceptional colonization potential and ability, enabling it to survive natural movements of eels from catchment to catchment and to increase rapidly within a new locality. The ability of free-living larvae to adhere to the substratum and survive in sea water enables them to survive in eel-transport lorries from which they will not readily be removed by flushing, the normal cleansing procedure. It is concluded that there were two separate introductions of the parasite to Britain; via the eel import trade through London, and, totally unexpectedly, via the eel export trade in lorries traversing East Anglia. The parasite is now firmly established in Britain and will continue to spread by natural movements of eels but especially by human-assisted movements of infected eels for stocking and market. This latter practice is recognized as a major factor in introducing and disseminating fish parasites.  相似文献

Temperate-zone anguillid eels use both saline (marine or brackish) and fresh waters during their continental phase, but use of fresh waters is paradoxical because on average these fishes grow more rapidly in saline than in fresh waters. Based on data from anguillid eels whose habitat-residency histories had been determined by Sr:Ca otolithometry, superiority of growth rates in saline water is much greater in American eels Anguilla rostrata in north-eastern North America (mean saline:fresh growth rate ratio 2·07) than in European Anguilla anguilla , Japanese Anguilla japonica and shortfinned Anguilla australis eels (range of mean ratios 1·12–1·14). Data from A. rostrata in the Hudson Estuary, U.S.A., and Prince Edward Island, Canada, were used to test adaptive explanations of catadromous migrations. The hypothesis that lower mortality in fresh water offsets faster growth in saline water was not supported because loss (mortality + emigration ) rates did not vary between saline and fresh zones of the Hudson Estuary. Hypotheses that anguillid eels move to fresh water to escape from larger anguillid eels in saline water or to evaluate habitat quality were not supported by size and age distributions. Catadromy in temperate-zone anguillid eels increases the diversity of occupied habitats and therefore lowers fitness variance caused by environmental fluctuations. Catadromy in temperate-zone anguillid eels could be due to natural selection for maximum geometric mean fitness which is sensitive to fitness variance. Temperate-zone catadromy might also be maladaptive, at least in local areas, due to shifts over time in selective pressures or to inability of panmictic genetic systems to adapt to local conditions.  相似文献

In eels captured in Roskilde Fjord in 1972 and 1975, a specifically enhanced synthesis was found from 14C-acetate of 14C-labelled mono-unsaturated fatty acids (C16:1 and C18:1) relative to saturated fatty acids (C16:0 and C18:0) in sea water 4 days after irradiation (10 Gy, 60Co). 2. Corresponding experiments in 1976 and 1982 showed rather the opposite: irradiation resulted in more 14C-labelled saturated fatty acids relative to unsaturated fatty acids, both in fresh and sea water. 3. Synopsis In order to determine whether the trace element composition in otolith of the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica could be used to determine its habitat use, we used laser ablation inductivity coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) to assay sectioned otoliths of both marine-resident (sea eels) and freshwater-resident (river eels) eels. A close linear relationship in the Sr:Ca ratios between EPMA (X-ray analysis with an electron microprobe) and LA-ICPMS analyses was found, suggesting that the latter technique could be used to separate the marine and freshwater life phases. Elemental signatures in the otolith outside the elver mark showed significant differences in Cr:Ca, Mn:Ca, and Ba:Ca ratios as well as Sr:Ca ratios between sea and river eels. These results indicate that the elemental compositions may reflect environmental variability between marine and fresh water masses. Thus, those elemental ratios determined by LA-ICPMS analysis seem to have the potential to help distinguish the habitat of the eel.  相似文献

Prolactin (PRL) cell activity was investigated in eels kept in fresh water (FW), deionized water (DW) supplemented or not with Ca (2 mM), in Ca-enriched FW (10 mM), in normal (Ca 3.4 mM) or Ca-free 1/3 sea water (SW), and in SW (Ca 10.2 mM) or Ca-free SW (Ca 0.15 mM). Light-microscopic studies, including measurement of the nuclear area and cell height, showed that PRL cell activity, reduced in DW, is not affected by Ca supplementation. Activity is reduced in Ca-enriched FW, in 1/3 SW and in SW, conditions inducing an increase in the plasma sodium level. The lack of calcium in saline environments partly suppresses the nuclear atrophy occurring in SW. There is no significant correlation between external or total plasma calcium concentration and PRL cell activity. In artificial Ca-free SW, eels show a rapid increase in plasma osmolarity and sodium levels; there is a significant negative correlation between these two plasma values and the nuclear area or cell height of PRL cells. As in some other teleosts, plasma osmolarity and plasma sodium seem to play a more important role than external or internal calcium in controlling PRL secretion. This correlation is not apparent in eels kept in SW, having unstimulated PRL cells but active calcium-sensitive (Ca-s) cells in the pars intermedia.  相似文献

The euryhaline status of steelhead trout, Salmo gairdneri , smolts was challenged in sea water for 2 weeks after which half of the total fish population was returned to fresh water. Acclimation continued and created two test populations in 29%osea water and fresh water. Subsequently these fish were exposed in fresh water or sea water to approximately equal hyperbaric dissolved total gas pressures (ΔP) of 190 mm Hg or about 125% of barometric pressure. Sea water was easier to supersaturate with air and required only about 10% of the entrained air which was required in fresh water at the same temperature and pressure. Mean time to first mortality was sooner in sea water. Mean times to mortality (10–50%) were not significantly different between fresh water and sea water, but there was a noticeable trend for longer survival in fresh water.  相似文献

Annual changes in gonadal maturation of female Japanese eel Anguilla japonica in sea water were investigated histologically over 5 years in the Mikawa Bay, Japan, where they occurred throughout the year except in March. Almost all immature Japanese eels (yellow eels) occurred mainly from April to September, and they were rare after November. In contrast, maturing Japanese eels (silver eels) occurred from October to February. The gonado‐somatic index ( I G) and oocyte diameters of yellow eels were <1·0 and 150 μm, respectively, and oocytes were at the peri‐nucleolus or the oil droplet stages. The I G and oocyte diameters of silver eels were greater than those of yellow eels and most oocytes developed to the primary yolk globule stage. The numbers of silver eels lacking oocytes at the primary yolk globule stage increased after January in Mikawa Bay, although I G and oocyte diameters remained unchanged. In contrast, silver eels caught at the mouth of the bay in January possessed oocytes that had advanced to the secondary yolk globule stage. These observations indicate that oocyte development changes seasonally, especially after winter in Mikawa Bay.  相似文献

Summary 1. A modified arrangement has been used for the photographic recording of the directional choice of silver eels (Anguilla anguilla andA. rostrata) in a circular tank and under the magnetic action of a Helmholtz coil.2. The movement of the eels in the experimental tank was very restricted as obvious by photographs taken every 6 seconds.3. Nine male specimens from the Elbe River near Hamburg, 11 male specimens from the Elbe estuary and 3 to 5 female specimes from Rhode Island (USA) were examined for 17 to 22 hours, either in sea water or in fresh water, and yielded 225 to 946 photographs for each examination.4. In sea water, eels of all three samples changed their preferred direction from north or south to east, when the normal horizontal north (X) component of the geomagnetic field was compensated to zero. The east component (Y) remained (<–0.01 Gauss) during all observations. In fresh water, eels also preferred more easterly directions in the compensated field, but to a lesser degree.5. Reversal of the horizontal North component (X) of the magnetic earth field to the South caused no consistent change in eels examined in sea water compared with the controls. In fresh water a slight but consistent deviation to the right was observed.6. Sea water and fresh water controls includingA. rostrata showed a significant directional difference; sea water specimens chose North or South; fresh water specimens selected East to Southeast.7. Perhaps because of the very small sample ofA. rostrata, differences in this species and compared withA. anguilla were mostly not significant. But in all cases the same tendencies as in the European eels have been observed.8. The question of whether selection of swimming course is affected by the earth magnetic field itself or by magnetohydrodynamically produced electricity is discussed. Mechanisms of orientation under the influence of geomagnetism seem to be different from those observed in birds.9. An ecological example from the Elbe estuary is given which demonstrates the combined action of geomagnetism and salinity on migratory orientation of silver eels. It is evident that the salinity necessary to release northward swimming is comparatively low; this was also obvious from the results of earlier laboratory investigations (Tesch &Lelek 1973b).

Kurzfassung 25 Blankaale vonAnguilla anguilla undA. rostrata wurden in Süß- und Meerwasser sowie unter veränderten Bedingungen des erdmagnetischen Feldes hinsichtlich ihrer Richtungseinstellung untersucht. Hierzu dienten ein Rundbecken, ein Helmholtz-Spulen-Paar sowie eine photographische Registriereinrichtung. Die Aale bewegten sich in der Versuchsanlage wenig. Sie bevorzugten im Seewasser und unter natürlichen Magnetfeldbedingungen, ähnlich wie bei früheren Untersuchungen, eine nördliche oder südliche Richtungseinstellung. Kompensierung der Nordkomponente (0°) des Erdfeldes rief im Meerwasser bei Aalen aller drei Herkunftsorte (Elbe, Hamburg und Brunsbüttel, Küste von Rhode Island, USA) eine Bevorzugung östlicher Richtungen hervor. Umkehrung der magnetischen Nordkomponente auf geographisch Süd verursachte keine Veränderung gegenüber dem Verhalten im natürlichen Feld. In allen neun Tests unter verschiedenen Magnetfeldbedingungen im Süßwasser (beide Arten im natürlichen Erdfeld, bei kompensierter Nordkomponente und bei auf geographisch Süd verlagerter Nordkomponente) lag die bevorzugte Richtung zwischen 93° und 184° (SO). In vier dieser Fälle stellten sich die Aale auch in entgegengesetzter Richtung ein. Es wird diskutiert, wodurch Unterschiede in der Richtungseinstellung zwischen Feld- und Laborversuchen zustande kommen konnten und wie weit magnetische oder elektrische Reize die Richtungswahl bedingen. Ein ökologisches Beispiel aus dem Gebiet der Elbmündung macht die vermutlich kombinierte Wirkung von Erdmagnetismus und Salzgehalt auf die Aalorientierung offenbar: das in Feldversuchen ermittelte Schwimmen in nördlicher Richtung wird erst beim Eintritt der Aale in Meerwasser geringer Salinität aktiviert.

The patterns of use of marine and freshwater habitats by the tropical anguillid eels Anguilla marmorata and A. bicolor pacifica were examined by analysing the otolith strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations of yellow (immature) and silver (mature) stage eels collected in Vietnamese waters. In A. marmorata, the change in the Sr:Ca ratios outside the high Sr:Ca core was generally divided into three patterns: (1) typical catadromous life history pattern; (2) constant residence in brackish water; and (3) habitat shifting between sea and brackish waters with no freshwater life. In A. bicolor pacifica, no eels had a general life history as freshwater residents. The eels were also divided into three patterns: (1) constant residence in sea water; (2) constantly living in brackish water; and (3) habitat shifting from brackish to sea water with no freshwater residence. The mean Sr:Ca ratio value after recruitment to coastal waters ranged from 1.73 to 5.67 × 10?3 (mean 3.2 × 10?3) in A. marmorata and from 2.53 to 6.32 × 10?3 (mean 4.3 × 10?3) in A. bicolor pacifica. The wide range of otolith Sr:Ca ratios in both species indicated that the habitat use of these tropical eels was facultative among fresh, brackish, and marine waters during their growth phases after recruitment to coastal areas. Tropical eel species may have the same behavioural plasticity as temperate anguillid species regarding whether to enter freshwater or to remain in estuarine and marine environments.  相似文献

本文报道采自辽东半岛沿岸鳗鲡(Anguilla japonica)的白仔鳗和经人工培育的当年幼鳗耳石日轮生长的观察结果。白仔鳗和幼鳗耳石平均直径均与体全长成直线相关。12尾白仔鳗耳石的平均日轮数146.3,据此推测其产卵期为11—12月。观察证实从咸淡水转人到淡水生活的幼鳗耳石的环纹有过渡带存在。  相似文献
