This study examined how sediment-sorbed PCBs and several large storms affected sediment nutrient dynamics based on potential nitrification rates and benthic flux measurements. PCBs were hypothesized to negatively affect potential nitrification rates due to the sensitivity of nitrifying bacteria. Sediment disturbance caused by the succession of storms, which can enhance nutrient inputs and phytoplankton production, was hypothesized to enhance both potential nitrification rates and benthic flux measurements as a result of higher nutrient and organic matter concentrations. Potential nitrification rates, benthic fluxes (NO3  + NO2 , NH4 +, and DIP), sediment PCB content, water content, organic content, salinity, bottom water dissolved oxygen, and sediment chlorophyll were measured at 13 different sites in Escambia Bay during the summer of 2005. Potential nitrification rates were highest at deep, organic-rich sites. Total PCB content did not have a direct effect on potential nitrification rates. An analysis of recent changes in benthic processes in relation to extreme meteorological events was performed by comparing the 2005 results with data from 2000, 2003, and 2004. Storm effects on sediment biogeochemistry were mixed with sediment nitrogen dynamics enhanced at some sites but not others. In addition, SOC and NH4 + fluxes increased in deeper channel sites after Hurricanes Ivan and Dennis, which could be attributed to the deposition of phytoplankton blooms. Sediment nutrient dynamics in Escambia Bay appear to be resilient to these extreme meteorological events since there were no significant effects on sediment processes in the Bay as a whole. It is important to understand the consequences of low level disturbances on the functioning of ecological communities because of the pervasiveness and frequency of this type of environmental change. In this study we investigated the response of a heterogeneous, subtidal, soft-sediment habitat to small experimental additions of organic matter and calcium carbonate to examine the sensitivity of benthic ecosystem functioning to changes in sediment characteristics that relate to the environmental threats of coastal eutrophication and ocean acidification. Our results documented significant changes between key biogeochemical and sedimentary variables such as gross primary production, ammonium uptake and dissolved reactive phosphorus flux following treatment additions. Moreover, the application of treatments affected relationships between macrofauna communities, sediment characteristics (e.g., chlorophyll a content) and biogeochemical processes (oxygen and nutrient fluxes). In this experiment organic matter and calcium carbonate showed persistent opposing effects on sedimentary processes, and we demonstrated that highly heterogeneous sediment habitats can be surprisingly sensitive to subtle perturbations. Our results have important biological implications in a world with relentless anthropogenic inputs of atmospheric CO2 and nutrients in coastal waters.  相似文献

The effects of ecosystem engineers can be mediated by direct and indirect interactions. For suspension-feeding bivalves that contribute to benthic-pelagic coupling, indirect effects have been linked to hydrodynamics; however, the influence of these ecosystem engineers may also operate through interactions with surrounding sediments, microphytes and macrofauna that, in turn, affect nutrient and oxygen fluxes. This study investigated the indirect effects of an epibenthic suspension-feeding bivalve (Atrina zelandica) on ammonium and nitrate-nitrite effluxes from the sediment, and oxygen consumption in the overlying waters, under dark conditions, at two sites with different environmental characteristics. Location-dependent effects were observed in the relative strength of the effect of Atrina on microphyte and macrofaunal abundance. The difference between the strength of the effect of Atrina on macrofauna between sites was not driven by a single species or type of species; rather all the species decreasing in abundance away from Atrina were small species that utilised the sediment water interface. Location-dependent effects were also observed in the relative strength of the effect of microphyte and macrofaunal abundance on oxygen and nutrient fluxes. While microphytes were an important consumer of oxygen at one site, at the other site, small infaunal macrofauna were important. Similarly, the strength of the effect of surrounding macrofauna on ammonium efflux varied between sites. These findings demonstrate the importance of natural history and species functions for understanding complex responses. They suggest that indirect effects by key benthic macrofaunal species in marine systems can also be important to benthic-pelagic coupling. In particular, while key species are often large, excretion and respiration of smaller macrofauna can be important to the exchange of nutrients near the seafloor and oxygen consumption in the benthic boundary layer.  相似文献

A marine mesocosm system (boxcosm system) was developed for ecological and/or ecotoxicological studies of sediment community function and structure. The system consists of continuous flow-through incubations of intact sediment samples, each with a surface area of 0.25 m2. The experimental setup enables repeated non-destructive measurements of benthic fluxes, such as of nutrients, oxygen and dissolved inorganic carbon, over the sediment-water interface. The benthic fluxes reflect the function of the sediment community, integrating over the chemical, biological and physical activities in the sediment. The suitability of the boxcosm system for controlled, highly ecologically relevant studies of intact sediment communities was evaluated in two experiments of six weeks and five months duration respectively, where the functional and structural development over time was compared to the development of the sampling site. The function of the sediment was measured as nutrient and oxygen fluxes, and the structural component consisted of microbial functional diversity and meio- and macrofauna composition. Differences between the boxcosm and the sampling site were detected especially in nitrate fluxes and meiofauna diversity and abundance, but all differences fell within seasonal and inter-annual variability at the sampling site. The cause of the differences could be referred to differences in oxygen availability, supply of organic matter particles, and recruitment of larvae. These factors can however be compensated for within the present setup. The study shows that the boxcosms are suitable tools for ecologically relevant studies generating comparable conditions to the natural environment.  相似文献

通过对九龙江河口区陆基养虾塘水样和沉积物样品采集分析及结合室内模拟实验,探讨了虾塘在不同养殖阶段沉积物-水界面营养盐通量时间变化特征及其主要影响因素。虾塘沉积物向上覆水体释放NO_x~--N(NO_2~--N和NO_3~--N)、NH_4~+-N和PO_4~(3-)-P能力均呈现随养殖时间推移而降低的特征。

The biodiversity–ecosystem functioning (B–EF) relationship has become of main interest in the last few decades, mostly because of the worldwide increase in species extinctions. However, most of these studies only consider species within single size‐class or trophic level, thereby most likely underestimating ecosystem complexity. To reach more realistic scenarios, we assessed the role of meiofauna (lower size‐class level) on the relationship between macrofaunal biodiversity and multiple benthic ecosystem properties. Experiments took place under controlled conditions using three macrofaunal species (Alitta (formerly Nereis) virens, Macoma balthica and Mya arenaria). A total of eight combinations of zero to three functionally different macrofaunal species were maintained in microcosms for 34 days in either the presence or absence of a different size‐class grouping (a meiofaunal mixture). The organic matter content and bacterial abundance in sediments and the oxygen and nutrient (NH4+, NOx?, PO43?) fluxes across the sediment‐water interface were measured and used as proxies of ecosystem properties. Overall, macrofaunal species richness did not modify any of the measured properties; however, we observed changes associated to the presence of A. virens and M. balthica. This study also revealed a strong impact of the presence of meiofauna on ecosystem properties. They changed interactions between macrofaunal species, which led to modifications in the ecosystem properties. Thus, even if this size‐class group has been poorly considered in previous studies, this experiment suggests that future studies should consider the meiofauna with greater attention, particularly in the context of B–EF.  相似文献

Species are often grouped according to their biological or functional traits to better understand their contribution to ecosystem functioning. However, it is becoming clear that a single species can perform different roles in different habitats. Austrohelice crassa, a burrow-building mud crab shifts its primary bioturbational role to that of a vertical mixer in non-cohesive sediments as frequent burrow collapse greatly enhances sediment reworking. We conducted in situ crab density manipulations in two sediment environments (a non-cohesive sand and a cohesive muddy-sand) to examine if the context-specific functional roles were linked to changes in solute fluxes across the sediment–water interface. Across both habitats, we show that A. crassa regulated nutrient cycling, creating strong density driven effects on solute exchanges. Increasing crab density increased sediment O2 demand and the flux of NH4 + from the sediment, indicating much of the response was physiologically driven. Clear interactions between A. crassa and microphytobenthos were also detected in both habitats. Despite lowering microphyte standing stock through deposit feeding, A. crassa increased benthic primary production per unit of chlorophyll a. Our experiment also revealed important context-specific differences, most notably for NH4 + fluxes, which were higher where burrows and their associated microbial communities were most stable (muddy-sand). This study highlights the need to integrate interactions between organism behavior and habitat type into functional group studies to broaden conceptual frameworks and avoid oversimplification of highly complex organism–sediment interactions.  相似文献

The input of terrestrial silt and clay (hereafter mud) into coastal environments can alter sediment grain size distribution affecting the structure and functioning of benthic communities. The relationship between sediment mud content and macrofaunal community structure has been well documented, but not the effects on ecosystem function. In 143 plots from the mid-intertidal sites in 9 estuaries, we measured sediment properties, macrofaunal community composition and fluxes of O2 and NH4 + across the sediment–water interface to derive process-based measures of ecosystem function across the sand–mud gradient. We observed reductions in measures of macrofaunal diversity and decreases in the maximum density of key bioturbating bivalves (Austrovenus stutchburyi and Macomona liliana) with increased mud content. Concurrently, the maximum rates of sediment oxygen consumption (SOC), NH4 + efflux (NH4 +) and biomass standardized gross primary production (GPPChl-a ) also decreased with increasing mud content. Environmental predictors explained 34–39% (P = 0.005–0.01) of the total variation in ecosystem function in distance-based linear models. After partitioning out the effect of mud, A. stutchburyi abundance was positively correlated and explained 25 and 23% (P = 0.0001) of the variation of SOC and NH4 +, respectively. Also, mud content (negatively correlated) and temperature (positively correlated) explained 26% of variability in GPPChl-a (P = 0.0001). Our results highlight the importance of increased mud content and the associated reduction in the abundance of strongly interacting key species on the loss of ecosystem function in intertidal sand flats.  相似文献

Coastal marine systems are currently subject to a variety of anthropogenic and climate-change-induced pressures. An important challenge is to predict how marine sediment communities and benthic biogeochemical cycling will be affected by these ongoing changes. To this end, it is of paramount importance to first better understand the natural variability in coastal benthic biogeochemical cycling and how this is influenced by local environmental conditions and faunal biodiversity. Here, we studied sedimentary biogeochemical cycling at ten coastal stations in the Southern North Sea on a monthly basis from February to October 2011. We explored the spatio-temporal variability in oxygen consumption, dissolved inorganic nitrogen and alkalinity fluxes, and estimated rates of nitrification and denitrification from a mass budget. In a next step, we statistically modeled their relation with environmental variables and structural and functional macrobenthic community characteristics. Our results show that the cohesive, muddy sediments were poor in functional macrobenthic diversity and displayed intermediate oxygen consumption rates, but the highest ammonium effluxes. These muddy sites also showed an elevated alkalinity release from the sediment, which can be explained by the elevated rate of anaerobic processes taking place. Fine sandy sediments were rich in functional macrobenthic diversity and had the maximum oxygen consumption and estimated denitrification rates. Permeable sediments were also poor in macrobenthic functional diversity and showed the lowest oxygen consumption rates and only small fluxes of ammonium and alkalinity. Macrobenthic functional biodiversity as estimated from bioturbation potential appeared a better variable than macrobenthic density in explaining oxygen consumption, ammonium and alkalinity fluxes, and estimated denitrification. However, this importance of functional biodiversity was manifested particularly in fine sandy sediments, to a lesser account in permeable sediments, but not in muddy sediments. The strong relationship between macrobenthic functional biodiversity and biogeochemical cycling in fine sandy sediments implies that a future loss of macrobenthic functional diversity will have important repercussions for benthic ecosystem functioning.  相似文献

Factors controlling seasonal variations in benthic metabolism (O2 flux) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) fluxes were examined during a 12–14 month period at three intertidal Wadden Sea stations. Since the flux measurements were made as small-scale laboratory core incubations, the results are primarily related to the microbenthic community (microalgae, bacteria, micro-, meio- and small macrofauna) and cannot be considered representative of the total benthic community in the Wadden Sea. Furthermore, it has to be emphasized that light intensity during day-time simulations were constant and saturating at all times. Benthic primary production and oxygen uptake appeared to be temperature dependent with a ‘seasonal Q10’ of 1.7–1.8 and 2.7–4.3, respectively. Inundation had no effect on oxygen fluxes as evidenced by similar sediment respiration with and without water cover. A stronger temperature dependence of primary production in muddy than in sandy sediment indicated that the overall control in the latter may be complex due to factors like macrofaunal grazing and nutrient availability. Benthic respiration may not be controlled by temperature alone, as sedimentary organic matter content correlated significantly with both temperature and benthic respiration. Annual gross primary production in high intertidal sandy sediment was 10 and 50% higher than in low intertidal sandy and muddy sediments, respectively. Since annual benthic community respiration was 2 times higher in muddy than sandy sediments, the annual net primary production was about 0 in the former and 17–19 mol C m?2 yr?1 in the latter. However, heterotrophic contribution by larger faunal components as well as removal of organic carbon by waves and tidal currents, which are not included here, may balance the budget at the sandy stations. There was no or only weak relationships between (light and dark) DIN exchange and factors like temperature, sedimentary organic content, and oxygen fluxes. Factors related to nutrient fluxes, such as denitrification and nutrient concentration in the overlying water, may have hampered any such relationships. In fact, DIN fluxes at all three stations appeared to be strongly controlled by DIN concentrations in the overlying water. On an annual basis, the sediment appeared to be a net sink for DIN.  相似文献

Anoxic degradation of sedimentary biogenic debris using closed sediment incubation experiments was studied in eutrophic subalpine Lake Bled (NW Slovenia) which, for most of the year, has an anoxic hypolimnion. Production rates of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), NH4 +, PO4 3- and dissolved Si, and reduction rates of SO4 2- were measured and anoxic mineralization rates were modelled using G-model. The depth profiles indicated major mineralization of biogenic debris and SO4 2- reduction near the sediment surface. A comparison between depth integrated anoxic mineralization rates and diffusive benthic fluxes of DIC, NH4 + and PO4 3- showed that the anoxic incubation experiments provide a good estimate of N degradation of biogenic debris. The contributions of SO4 2- reduction and acetate fermentation in NH4 + production are about 30 and 70%, respectively. The DIC production accounted for only 15% of DIC benthic flux, indicating that methanogenesis and oxidation of methane provides 80% of this flux. Only about 30% of PO4 3- was released because phosphate precipitated in the closed incubation experiments. The depth integrated production of Si accounts for 70–80% of Si benthic fluxes indicating intense dissolution of biogenic Si in the surficial lake sediment.  相似文献

In New Caledonia, the benthic communities living in the coral reef lagoon around Noumea city are subjected to regular shifts from oligotrophic conditions typical of lagoon waters to nutrient enrichment due to waste water inputs. The influence of ammonium pulses on microphytobenthos production was experimentally tested under varying light intensities in the vicinity of Noumea. Benthic oxygen, ammonium and silicon fluxes at the sediment-water interface were measured in situ using benthic enclosures. Three ammonium concentrations were tested. Gross primary production was doubled with a 13.8 μmol l−1 ammonium concentration increase. Fitted PI curves showed that maximum production (Fmax) was linearly related to ammonium concentration, but not the optimal irradiance (Ik). Silicon fluxes were characterized by dissolution in the absence of light, a process that declined with increasing illumination. These results were attributed to microphytobenthos activity, mainly diatoms that are nutrient-limited and strongly reactive to ammonium inputs. Production may result from a multiplication of cells, but migration up to the water sediment interface may also be involved. Oxygen consumption was also significantly influenced by ammonium concentration as a positive linear relationship with added ammonium concentration was established. Even during short-term experiments, ammonium enrichment stimulated photoautotrophic production, increasing the energy available to heterotrophs. Furthermore, microbenthic activities as well as nitrate production were increased by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria able to grow chemolithotrophically at the expense of oxygen. Therefore, in the study area, pulses of urban waste waters resulted in a decrease of plant-related autotrophy in benthic communities.  相似文献

Globally, hypoxic areas (<63?mmol O2 m?3) in coastal waters are increasing in number and spatial extent. One of the largest coastal hypoxic regions has been observed during the summer in the bottom-water of the Louisiana continental shelf. The shelf receives the sediments, organic matter, and nutrients exported from the Mississippi River watershed, and much of this material is ultimately deposited to the sea floor. Hence, quantifying the rates of sediment-water dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), oxygen (O2), and nutrient fluxes is important for understanding how these processes relate to the development and maintenance of hypoxia. In this study, the sediment-water fluxes of DIC, O2, nutrients, and N2 (denitrification) were measured on the Louisiana shelf during six cruises from 2005 to 2007. On each cruise, three to four sites were occupied in or directly adjacent to the region of the shelf that experiences hypoxia. DIC fluxes, a proxy for total sediment respiration, ranged from 7.9 to 21.4?mmol?m?2 day?1 but did not vary significantly either spatially or as a function of bottom-water O2 concentration. Overall, sediment respiration and nutrient flux rates were small in comparison to water-column respiration and phytoplankton nutrient demand. Nitrate fluxes were correlated with bottom-water O2 concentrations (r?=?0.69), and there was evidence that decreasing O2 concentrations inhibited coupled nitrification-denitrification. Denitrification rates averaged 1.4?mmol?N?m?2 day?1. Scaled to the area of the shelf, the denitrification sink represented approximately 39% of the N load from the Mississippi River watershed. The sediment-water fluxes reported from this study add substantial information on the spatial and temporal patterns in carbon, O2, and nutrient cycling available for the Louisiana continental shelf and, thus, improve the understanding of this system.  相似文献

Over the past three decades, Narragansett Bay has undergone various ecological changes, including significant decreases in water column chlorophyll a concentrations, benthic oxygen uptake, and benthic nutrient regeneration rates. To add to this portrait of change, we measured the net flux of N2 across the sediment–water interface over an annual cycle using the N2/Ar technique at seven sites in the bay for comparison with measurements made decades ago. Net denitrification rates ranged from about 10–90 μmol N2–N m?2 h?1 over the year. Denitrification rates were not significantly different among sites and had no clear correlation with temperature. Net nitrogen fixation (?5 to ?650 μmol N2–N m?2 h?1) was measured at three sites and only observed in summer (June–August). Neither denitrification nor nitrogen fixation exhibited a consistent relationship with sediment oxygen demand or with fluxes of nitrite, nitrate, ammonium, total dissolved inorganic nitrogen, or dissolved inorganic phosphate across all stations. In contrast to the mid-bay historical site where denitrification rates have declined, denitrification rates in the Providence River Estuary have not changed significantly over the past 30 years.  相似文献

Understanding the mechanisms that drive complementary interactions among species is key to the progress of the debate over the role of biodiversity in ecosystem functioning. In addition, interspecific interactions among physical ecosystem engineers have rarely been framed in the context of biodiversity experiments. Here, we provide an empirical test of how the physical niche space of species influences the effects of the biodiversity of bioturbators on cross‐habitat nutrient fluxes in benthic sediments. In the laboratory, we orthogonally manipulated the number and composition of three benthic invertebrate bioturbator species that differ in the dimensions of their bioturbating space niche; i.e. their vertical distribution in the sediment over a gradient of sediment depth and volume. The ammonium (NH4‐N) flux from the sediment to the water was positively related to bioturbator species richness only in the sediments with the deepest depth and greatest volume. The non‐additive effects of bioturbator species richness on the benthic–pelagic NH4‐N flux increased linearly with sediment depth and volume, but only in the three‐species mixtures. Furthermore, no individual species dominated the rates of H4‐N fluxes, indicating that biodiversity effects were mainly driven by complementarity. These results suggest that sediment bioturbating space mediates the magnitude of non‐additive effects among the three invertebrate species and sheds light on the importance of physical niche space in modulating the positive effects of biodiversity on ecosystem functioning.  相似文献

Large areas of the Baltic Sea bottoms suffer from low oxygen conditions and anoxia, impoverishing the benthic macrofauna. The important macrofaunal function bioturbation, which improves the transport of oxygen into the sediment does not occur in an absence of benthic macrofauna. The objective of this study was to investigate if a semi-pelagic species, like the mysid crustacean Mysis relicta, is able to improve the oxygen conditions of the sediment and thereby acts as a facilitator for re-colonization of azoic sediments by benthic species. We also wanted to study the potential of M. relicta in breaking the diffusive boundary layer under varying degrees of oxygen deficiency. Three types of sediment qualities were used to mimic the severity of oxygen deficiency. Under normoxia, moderate hypoxia (40% O2) and hypoxia, (20% O2) M. relicta's bioturbation activity was studied by recording oxygen profiles in sediments with and without mysids. In normoxia the mysids were able to oxygenize the sediment independent of sediment quality. The results show that mysids are able to bioturbate the sediment to some extent in hypoxia independent of the sediment quality. In all treatments with mysids the diffusive boundary layer was more or less completely broken down. In normoxia treatment with sediment of very low quality the mysids prevented growth of the sulphur bacteria Beggiatoa spp. which usually occurs on anoxic bottoms. The ability of this semi-pelagic species to improve benthic oxygen conditions can be seen as an important first step in re-colonization by real benthic species.  相似文献

In this study oxygen and nutrient fluxes and denitrification rates across the sediment-water interface were measured via intact core incubations with a twofold aim: show whether microphytobenthos activity affects these processes and analyse the dispersion of replicate measurements. Eighteen intact sediment cores (i.d. 8 cm) were randomly sampled from a shallow microtidal brackish pond at Tjarno, on the west coast of Sweden, and were incubated in light and in darkness simulating in situ conditions. During incubation O2, inorganic N and SiO2 fluxes and denitrification rates (isotope pairing) were measured. Assuming mean values of 18 cores as best estimate of true average (BEA), the accuracy of O2, NH4 +, NO3 - and SiO2 fluxes calculated for an increasing number of subsamples was tested. At the investigated site, microalgae strongly influenced benthic O2, inorganic N and SiO2 fluxes and coupled (Dn) and uncoupled (Dw) denitrification through their photosynthetic activity. In the shift between dark and light conditions NH4 + and SiO2 effluxes (60 and 110 µmol m-2h-1) and Dn (5 µmol m-2 h-1) dropped to zero, NO3 - uptake (70 µmol m-2 h-1) showed a 30% increase, while Dw (20 µmol m-2 h-1) showed an 80% decrease. For O2 and NO3 - dark fluxes, 4 core replicates were sufficient to obtain averages within 5-10% of the best estimated mean, while 10-20% accuracy was obtained with 4-12 replicates for SiO2 and >10 replicates for NH4 + dark fluxes. Mean accuracy was considerably lower for all light incubations, probably due to the patchy distribution of the benthic microalgal community.  相似文献

1. Invertebrates and aquatic plants often play a key role in biogeochemical processes occurring at the water–sediment interface of aquatic ecosystems. However, few studies have investigated the respective influences of plants and bioturbating animals on ecological processes (nutrient fluxes, benthic oxygen uptake, microbial activities) occurring in freshwater sediments. 2. We developed a laboratory experiment in aquaria to quantify the effects of (i) one invertebrate acting as a bioturbator (Tubifex tubifex); (ii) one submersed plant with a high sediment‐oxygenating potential (Myriophyllum spicatum) and (iii) one submersed plant with a low sediment‐oxygenating potential (Elodea canadensis). 3. The tubificid worms significantly increased the fluxes of nitrogen at the water–sediment interface (influx of nitrate, efflux of ammonium), whereas the two plant species did not have significant influences on these nitrogen fluxes. The differences in nitrogen fluxes between tubificid worms and plants were probably due to the bioirrigation process caused by T. tubifex, which increased water exchanges at the water–sediment interface. Tubifex tubifex and M. spicatum produced comparable reductions of nutrient concentrations in pore water and comparable stimulations of benthic oxygen uptake and microbial communities (percentages of active eubacteria and hydrolytic activity) whereas E. canadensis had a very weak influence on these variables. These differences between the two plants were due to their contrasting abilities to increase oxygen in sediments by radial oxygen losses (release of oxygen from roots). 4. Our study suggests that the bioirrigation process and radial oxygen loss are major functional traits affecting biogeochemical functioning at the water–sediment interface of wetlands.  相似文献

Salt marshes may act either as greenhouse gas (GHG) sources or sinks depending on hydrological conditions, vegetation communities, and nutrient availability. In recent decades, eutrophication has emerged as a major driver of change in salt marsh ecosystems. An ongoing fertilization experiment at the Great Sippewissett Marsh (Cape Cod, USA) allows for observation of the results of over four decades of nutrient addition. Here, nutrient enrichment stimulated changes to vegetation communities that, over time, have resulted in increased elevation of the marsh platform. In this study, we measured fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) in dominant vegetation zones along elevation gradients of chronically fertilized (1,572 kg N ha?1 year?1) and unfertilized (12 kg N ha?1 year?1) experimental plots at Great Sippewissett Marsh. Flux measurements were performed using darkened chambers to focus on community respiration and excluded photosynthetic CO2 uptake. We hypothesized that N‐replete conditions in fertilized plots would result in larger N2O emissions relative to control plots and that higher elevations caused by nutrient enrichment would support increased CO2 and N2O and decreased CH4 emissions due to the potential for more oxygen diffusion into sediment. Patterns of GHG emission supported our hypotheses. Fertilized plots were substantially larger sources of N2O and had higher community respiration rates relative to control plots, due to large emissions of these GHGs at higher elevations. While CH4 emissions displayed a negative relationship with elevation, they were generally small across elevation gradients and nutrient enrichment treatments. Our results demonstrate that at decadal scales, vegetation community shifts and associated elevation changes driven by chronic eutrophication affect GHG emission from salt marshes. Results demonstrate the necessity of long‐term fertilization experiments to understand impacts of eutrophication on ecosystem function and have implications for how chronic eutrophication may impact the role that salt marshes play in sequestering C and N.  相似文献
