Interspecific interaction may lead to species exclusion but there are several ways in which species can coexist. One way is by reducing the overall intensity of competition via aggregated utilisation of fragmented resources. Known as the 'aggregation model of coexistence', this system assumes saturation and an equilibrium number of species per community. In this study we tested the effects of interspecific aggregation on the level of intraspecific aggregation among ectoparasites of marine fishes (36 communities of gill and head ectoparasite species). If parasite species are distributed in a way that interspecific aggregation is reduced relative to intraspecific aggregation then species coexistence is facilitated. We found a positive relationship between parasite species richness and fish body size, controlling for host phylogeny. A positive relationship between infracommunity species richness and total parasite species richness was also found, providing no evidence for saturation. This result supports the view that infracommunities of parasites are not saturated by local parasite residents. The observed lack of saturation implies that we are far from a full exploitation of the fish resource by parasites. Ectoparasites were aggregated at both population and species levels. However, only half of the ectoparasite communities were dominated by negative interspecific aggregation. We found that infracommunity parasite species richness was positively correlated with the level of intraspecific aggregation versus interspecific aggregation. This means that intraspecific aggregation increases compared with interspecific aggregation when total parasite species richness increases, controlling fish size and phylogeny. This supports one assumption of the 'aggregation model of coexistence', which predicts that interspecific interactions are reduced relative to intraspecific interactions, facilitating species coexistence.  相似文献

Parasite communities of Baikal omul from Chivyrkuiskii Bay of Lake Baikal have been analyzed at levels of a host individual (infracommunity), a separate age group of a host (set of infracommunities), and a host population (component community). Significant positive correlations of parameters of species richness (number of parasite species, Margalef and Menhinick indices) with the age of Baikal omul were recorded only at the level of parasite infracommunities. The absence of linear positive correlations between the parameters of species richness and the age of Baikal omul at the level of sets of parasite infracommunities were revealed for the first time for fishes of Lake Baikal. The peculiarity of the dynamics of parasite communities of Baikal omul is determined by specific features of the host physiology and ecology, primarily by the age dynamics of the feeding spectrum.  相似文献

In aquatic ecosystems, fish play a key role in parasite accumulation and transmission to predacious animals. In the present study, realized on seven populations of a small cyprinid fish species, the European bitterling Rhodeus amarus, we investigated (1) the role of the European bitterling as a potential intermediate or paratenic host, (2) the ability of the fish to accumulate parasites with similar final host group, and (3) its significance as a potential source of parasite infection in the ecosystem in respect to habitat characteristics. A total of 36 parasite species were recorded; 31 species (90% of all parasite specimens) were classified as endoparasites. Most of the endoparasites were found in the larval life stage, using bitterling as an intermediate or paratenic host. In particular, parasite community structure showed significantly higher proportions of allogenic parasites in comparison with autogenic. The supposed co-occurrence of parasite species with identical final host groups showed only a weak association. The adjacent reservoir areas were a significant determinant of both the total and infracommunity parasite species richness and for the mean parasite abundance. No relationship between the distance of sampling site from the adjacent reservoir and parasite community characteristics was found. As a small-sized fish with a wide distribution range and high local abundances, the European bitterling can represent a natural prey for a wide range of piscivorous predators. Due to its susceptibility to the number of larval endoparasites, this fish species may therefore fulfill the role as important transmitter of parasites to their final hosts.  相似文献

The parasite communities of bluegill x green sunfish hybrids were examined from 5 constructed ponds in Kansas in an attempt to evaluate the separate effects of habitat area and habitat heterogeneity on parasite community structure. Characterization of fish community structure and collection of hybrid fishes was conducted using an electrofishing boat. Benthic invertebrates were sampled, and substrate types examined at 30 evenly spaced points in each pond. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling of the parasite infracommunities, in concert with an analysis of similarities, indicated significant clustering of infracommunities by locality. The number and diversity of habitat types, and the richness and diversity of both fishes and benthic invertebrates, were positively correlated with the first axis of the infracommunity ordination. Pond surface area, parasite richness, and stocking pressure were negatively correlated with the first axis of the infracommunity ordination, suggesting that pond area, stocking pressure, or both was a stronger determinant of parasite community structure in these systems than habitat and host heterogeneity.  相似文献

An analysis was undertaken of intestinal helminth communities in flounder Platichthys flesus from two sites on the River Thames. A comparison was made between helminth community richness and diversity from these sites at the component and infracommunity levels. At the component community level, a richer and more diverse parasite community was found in flounder from the Tilbury location (marine influence) than that from the Lots Road location (freshwater influence). At the infracommunity level, more parasite species and parasite individuals per host were found at Lots Road and the percentage of similarity values were low at both locations. Helminth species with high prevalence values in the parasite communities of the flounder are the dominant species in any individual fish, harbouring multi-specific infections. The presence of more invertebrate species, which are intermediate hosts in the helminth life cycle in the Thames, fish vagility and the high prevalence and abundance values of Pomphorhynchus laevis in the flounder, may explain the differences between the two locations.  相似文献

The geographical variation in parasite community structure among populations of the same host species remains one of the least understood aspects of parasite community ecology. Why are parasite communities clearly structured in some host populations, and randomly assembled in others? Here, we address this fundamental question using data on the metazoan parasite communities of different host size-classes of four distinct populations of a small pelagic fish, the Argentine anchovy, Engraulis anchoita, from the South West Atlantic. Within each fish sample, fish length was correlated with both the total intensity of parasites and species richness among infracommunities. More importantly, average fish length correlated with mean infracommunity richness and mean total intensity across the fish samples, indicating that the characteristics of parasite assemblages in a fish population are strongly influenced by the size of its fish in relation to those in other populations. Nested subset patterns were observed in about half of the fish samples. This means that the presence or absence of parasite species among fish individuals is often not random; however, no repeatability of nestedness among component communities was observed. Average fish length did not influence directly the likelihood that a parasite assemblage was significantly nested. However, variables influenced by average fish length, namely mean infracommunity richness and mean total intensity, determine the probability that a nested hierarchy will be observed; host size may thus indirectly affect parasite community structure either itself or via its influence on host movement and feeding patterns. To some extent, this apparent link may be due to the sensitivity of nestedness analyses to the proportion of presence in a presence/absence matrix; this in itself is a biological feature of the parasite community, however, which is associated with mean host length.  相似文献

Summary The variability of monogenean gill ectoparasite species richness in 19 West African cyprinid species was analyzed using the following seven predictor variables: host size, number of drainage basins, number of sympatric cyprinid species, host diversity, association with mainland forest, host ecology, and monogenean biological labelling. The size of the host species accounted for 77% of the variation in the number of parasite species per host, and host ecology an additional 8%. Together the effects of host size and host ecology accounted for 85% of the variation in monogenean species richness. This study shows that the deciding factors for explaining monogenean species richness in West African cyprinid fishes are host species size and host ecology. These results were compared with main factors responsible for parasite species richness in fish communities. Other possible explanations of monogenean community structure in west African cyprinids are discussed.  相似文献

Whereas the effect of parasites on food webs is increasingly recognised and has been extensively measured and modelled, the effect of food webs on the structure of parasite assemblages has not been quantified in a similar way. Here, we apply the concept of decay in community similarity with increasing distance, previously used for parasites in geographical, phylogenetic and ontogenetic contexts, to differences in the trophic level (TL) based on diet composition of fishes. It is proposed as an accurate quantitative method to measure rates of assemblage change as a function of host feeding habits and is applied, to our knowledge for the first time, across host species in marine waters. We focused on a suite of 15 species of trophically-transmitted and non-specific larval helminths across 16 fish species (1783 specimens, six orders, 14 families) with different sizes and TLs, gathered from the same ecosystem. Not all host species harboured the same number and types of parasites, reflecting the differences in their ecological characteristics. Using differences in TL and body length as measurements of size and trophic distances, we found that similarity at both infracommunity and component community levels showed a very clear decay pattern, based on parasite abundance and relative abundance, with increasing distance in TL, but was not related to changes in fish size, with TL thus emerging as the main explanatory factor for similarity of parasite assemblages. Furthermore, the relationships between host TL and assemblage similarity allowed identification of fishes for which the TL was under- or over-estimated and prediction of the TL of host species based on parasite data alone.  相似文献

Metazoan parasite communities of Crassostrea gigas and Ostrea edulis from Great Britain, Crassostrea virginica from Mexico, and Saccostrea commercialis from Australia are described and summarized in terms of species composition, species richness, total number of individuals and dominance. Metazoan parasite communities in all host species were composed of turbellarians and the metacercarial stage of digeneans, with the exception of S. commercialis where only metacercariae were found. Arthropods, including one copepod and one mite species, were present only in British oyster species. All metazoan parasite communities of oysters had few species and low density of individuals. Richest communities were found in C. virginica at both component and infracommunity level. The least diverse component community occurred in S. commercialis. Infracommunities in O. edulis and S. commercialis never exceeded one species per host. The host response against parasites is suggested as the principal factor responsible for depauperate parasite communities of oysters. Environmental factors characteristic of tropical latitudes are likely to have enhanced both the number of species and the densities of parasites per host in the infracommunities of C. virginica.  相似文献

Galaxias maculatus (small puyen) is an abundant native fish distributed in lakes and rivers of the Patagonia, and it is the frequent prey of other fishes, fish-eating birds, and mammals. Previous studies have shown that it is parasitized by 33 metazoan species and that the richness and composition of the parasite communities vary between lakes. The aim of the present work was to analyze the relationship between the composition of fish assemblages and the helminth component community structure of G. maculatus . Ten environmentally similar, small, shallow lakes, belonging to the Nahuel Huapi Lake basin, were chosen because of the differences in the native fish assemblages. Parasite community structure in G. maculatus varied according to the fish assemblage of each lake. The presence of the piscivorous fish Percichthys trucha regularly produced variations in the composition and richness at the component and infracommunity levels, as well as the percentage of autogenic parasite species in G. maculatus .  相似文献

This study investigated morphological characters and electrophoretic polymorphism at 25 protein loci in nine wild populations of the African clariid catfish Clarias gariepinus and seven wild populations of C. anguillaris. Two other clariid species, Clarias albopunctatus and Heterobranchus longifilis , were used as outgroups in the allozyme study. Morphometric and allozyme data are congruent for the Nilo-Sudanian populations of C. gariepinus and C. anguillaris. Both approaches also distinguished two groups amongst the C. gariepinus populations, one containing Nilo-Sudanian populations and the other including Lake Victoria and southern African populations. However, allozyme data suggest that C. gariepinus is not a monophyletic group and show that C. albopunctatus is more divergent from C. gariepinus and C. anguillaris than it is from H. longifilis , stressing the need for a revision of clariid systematics. The variation observed in C. gariepinus is discussed in terms of palaeogeographical events and its use in aquaculture.  相似文献

Kennedy and Guégan, based on Cornell and Lawton (J Anim Ecol 1992;61:1–12), found a curvilinear relationship (the fundamental form of the relationship for parasite communities) between infracommunity and component community richness, and interpreted this as meaning that only processes acting within the infracommunities can explain the limitation in the number of parasite species in a given host. The research described here shows that an asymptotic relationship is the consequence of the differential likelihoods of parasite species to appear in an infracommunity as determined by transmission rates and intrinsic lifespans. Processes operating at the infracommunity level are not necessary to explain the curvilinear relationship. Even communities much richer than those found in European freshwater fishes cannot be assumed to be saturated in the sense that further species cannot be added over evolutionary time.  相似文献

Between October 2001 and March 2002, 103 specimens of A. tricolor from Angra dos Reis (23 degrees 01' S, 44 degrees 19' W), in the coastal zone of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were analyzed in order to study their metazoan parasite infracommunities. Ten species of metazoan parasites were collected: 4 digeneans, 1 cestode, 1 acantocephalan, 2 nematodes, 1 copepod, and 1 hirudinean; 77.7% of the fishes were parasitized by one or more metazoan, with a mean of 3.5 +/- 6.2 parasite/fish. Digenean was the most dominant with 4 species that accounted for 53.2% of the total parasites collected; Ergasilus sp. was the most abundant species. Abundance and prevalence of Parahemiurus merus (Linton, 1910) were positively correlated with the total length of host. Relationships between total body length of fish and both total parasite abundance and mean parasite species richness were observed. Mean parasite diversity of species was correlated to host's total length, with significant differences found between male and female fishes. Two pairs of larval species showed significant positive association and covariation. The metazoan parasite infracommunities of A. tricolor presented dominance of larval endoparasites; correlation of parasite abundance, diversity, and species richness with host total length; and low number of parasite interspecific relationships. The parasite community of A. tricolor showed some similarities with the parasite community of another South American Atlantic engraulid.  相似文献

Twenty-three species of metazoan parasites were recorded from adult spot and 26 from adult croaker. Of the 33 parasitic species found, 17 occurred in both spot and croaker. No significant differences in intensity of parasites occurred between sexes of either spot or croaker. All of the parasites had over-dispersed, or clumped, distributions among hosts. Adult spot and croaker collected offshore had much greater species-richness, diversity, and total number of individual parasites than juvenile fishes collected in adjoining estuaries during another study. The juvenile spot and croaker had less time to acquire parasites and inhabited less diverse and more confined habitats in inshore estuaries, which resulted in less diverse parasite communities than offshore fishes. The number of species and diversity of parasites in adult fish was greater in croaker than spot. However, when only gastrointestinal helminths were considered, spot had greater species-richness as well as greater numbers of individual helminths, suggesting that they had a more diverse diet and that they fed on more infected intermediate hosts than croaker. In both adult spot and croaker the mean number of parasitic species was greater than those of freshwater fishes and fewer than those for birds and mammals. The total number of individual parasites was similar to that of freshwater fishes. The opportunistic diet and the migratory habits of both spot and croaker contribute to their diverse parasite faunas. Comparison of adult spot and croaker parasite faunas collected offshore indicated that their respective parasite component communities were distinct and that similar parasite infracommunity variability existed in both hosts and that their communities were not ‘random’ samples, but restricted subsets of the compound community. Although the parasite dominance hierarchy in adults of both species varied slightly between areas and seasons sampled, there appeared to be a predictable dominant species that was accompanied by subordinate, less predictable species. However, the variability in both relative intensities and presence-absence of parasites within communities resulting from their diverse diets make them less predictable than those of other vertebrates with less diverse diets such as the lesser scaup duck and more like those of other marine fishes.  相似文献

The main goals of this study were to determine the richness and diversity of helminth parasites of Rhinella fernandezae at the component and infracommunity levels and determine the ecological implications of different biotic and abiotic factors. Specimens were collected near the city of Corrientes, Corrientes Province, Argentina. Prevalence of infection was 94% in the specimens examined (n = 65). The helminth component community in R. fernandezae in this area was comprised a total of 22 species. Of all helminth species, only three (Catadiscus inopinatus, Cosmocerca podicipinus and C. parva) were dominant (importance value: I > 1.0) in the community. The most abundant species were B. tetracotyloides (d = 0.43) among the larvae and C. podicipinus (d = 0.09) among adult worms. At the infracommunity level, the mean individual species richness (2.28 ± 1.48) (mean ± SD) was no more than 3 helminth species per infected host; the diversity and equitability of helminths were 0.23 ± 0.21 and 0.48 ± 0.38, respectively. The host body size was the main factor in determining the parasite abundance. Species richness was significantly and positively correlated with host body size. The parasite helminth species predominantly showed an overdispersed pattern of distribution. Helminth species showed two negative and significant pairs of covariation and one significant pair of association (P < 0.05). R. fernandezae has a wide variety of parasites relating to the host microhabitat, mobility and feeding habits.  相似文献

From June 2001 to March 2002, 7 semi-offshore facilities in the Adriatic Sea rearing sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax, sea bream Sparus aurata, sharpsnout bream Diplodus puntazzo and red sea bream Pagellus bogaraveo aged 1+, were monitored for the presence of protozoan and metazoan parasites. Obtained data sets of abundance and prevalence were used to evaluate the structure and dynamic of infra- and component parasite communities. In all hosts, except the red sea bream, dominant parasites were monogenean specialists, showing clear seasonality. Average infracommunity richness was very low, ranging from 1 to 3 parasites per fish, while at component community level, values ranged from 3 to 8, depending on host species. Based on low diversity indices and a moderate to high similarity coefficient between different facilities, it can be concluded that the parasitofauna of Adriatic cage-reared fish is a stable and impoverished stochastic assemblage, with monogeneans as the predominant parasitic group.  相似文献

Disease‐mediated threats posed by exotic species to native counterparts are not limited to introduced parasites alone, since exotic hosts frequently acquire native parasites with possible consequences for infection patterns in native hosts. Several biological and geographical factors are thought to explain both the richness of parasites in native hosts, and the invasion success of free‐living exotic species. However, the determinants of native parasite acquisition by exotic hosts remain unknown. Here, we investigated native parasite communities of exotic freshwater fish to determine which traits influence acquisition of native parasites by exotic hosts. Model selection suggested that five factors (total body length, time since introduction, phylogenetic relatedness to the native fish fauna, trophic level and native fish species richness) may be linked to native parasite acquisition by exotic fish, but 95% confidence intervals of coefficient estimates indicated these explained little of the variance in parasite richness. Based on R2‐values, weak positive relationships may exist only between the number of parasites acquired and either host size or time since introduction. Whilst our results suggest that factors influencing parasite richness in native host communities may be less important for exotic species, it seems that analyses of general ecological factors currently fail to adequately incorporate the physiological and immunological complexity of whether a given animal species will become a host for a new parasite.  相似文献

The factors responsible for the maintenance of genetic variation among natural populations remain a mystery. Recent models of host-parasite co-evolution assume that parasites exert frequency-dependent selection on their hosts by favouring rare alleles that may confer resistance against infection. We tested this prediction in a comparative analysis that sought relationships between levels of genetic variation and the number of metazoan parasite species exploiting each host species. We used data on 40 species of North American freshwater fishes. After controlling for sampling effort and phylogenetic influences, we found no relationship between genetic polymorphism and parasite species richness among fish species. However, we found a marginal negative correlation between parasite species richness and heterozygosity. This result goes against the prediction that increased selective pressure by parasites should be associated with higher levels of genetic variation. Instead, it suggests that parasites may be colonising host species showing low levels of genetic variation with greater success than genetically more variable host species.  相似文献

A 2-yr, seasonal, parasitological study of 1,435 fish, belonging to 4 species of native fishes and 7 species of nonnative fishes from the lower Little Colorado River (LCR) and tributary creeks, Grand Canyon, Arizona, yielded 17 species of parasites. These comprised 1 myxozoan (Henneguya exilis), 2 copepods (Ergasilus arthrosis and Lernaea cyprinacea), 1 acarine (Oribatida gen. sp.), 1 piscicolid leech (Myzobdella lugubris), 4 monogeneans (Gyrodactylus hoffmani, Gyrodactylus sp., Dactylogyrus extensus, and Ligictaluridus floridanus), 4 nematodes (Contracaecum sp., Eustrongylides sp., Rhabdochona sp., and Truttaedacnitis truttae), 3 cestodes (Bothriocephalus acheilognathi, Corallobothrium fimbriatum, and Megathylacoides giganteum), and 2 trematodes (Ornithodiplostomum sp. and Posthodiplostomum sp.). Rhabdochona sp. was the only adult parasite native to the LCR. Infection intensities of Ornithodiplostomum sp. and B. acheilognathi were positively correlated with length of the humpback chub Gila cypha. Adult helminths showed a high degree of host specificity, except B. acheilognathi, which was recovered from all fish species examined but was most abundant in cyprinids. Abundance of B. acheilognathi in the humpback chub was highest in the fall and lowest in the summer in both reaches of the LCR. There was no major taxonomic difference in parasite assemblages between the 2 different reaches of the river (LC1 and LC2). Parasite community diversity was very similar in humpback chub, regardless of sampling site or time. The parasite fauna of the LCR is numerically dominated by B. acheilognathi and metacercariae of Ornithodiplostomum sp. The richest and most diverse component community occurred in a nonnative species, the channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus, but infracommunity species richness was highest in a native host, humpback chub.  相似文献

An analysis is made of the community structure of the helminth parasites of the tuna Euthynnus affinis collected off the coast of Visakhapatnam, Bay of Bengal. The helminth fauna comprised 23 species, consisting of two monogeneans, 18 digeneans, one larval cestode, one nematode and one acanthocephalan. Didymozoids, represented by 14 species, were the dominant members of the parasite spectrum. The parasite assemblage is characterized by species richness as well as a high diversity. Most of the parasites found, the didymozoids in particular, were host specialists, exhibiting a high degree of host specificity. The fauna comprised three core species, four satellite species and many secondary species, with no potential for interaction among them but the degree of predictability is high in that each infracommunity comprised two or three core species superimposed by a few secondary species. Many host factors such as the varied diet, high vagility, long life span and endothermy appear to have contributed to the development of the species rich and diverse parasite communities in the tuna. There was evidence for a decrease in parasite density and an increase in diversity with increase in host size, indicating that host size has a profound influence on the component community structure.  相似文献
