Motor chunking facilitates movement production by combining motor elements into integrated units of behavior. Previous research suggests that chunking involves two processes: concatenation, aimed at the formation of motor-motor associations between elements or sets of elements, and segmentation, aimed at the parsing of multiple contiguous elements into shorter action sets. We used fMRI to measure the trial-wise recruitment of brain regions associated with these chunking processes as healthy subjects performed a cued-sequence production task. A dynamic network analysis identified chunking structure for a set of motor sequences acquired during fMRI and collected over 3?days of training. Activity in the bilateral sensorimotor putamen positively correlated with chunk concatenation, whereas?a left-hemisphere frontoparietal network was correlated with chunk segmentation. Across subjects, there was an aggregate increase in chunk strength (concatenation) with training, suggesting that subcortical circuits play a direct role in the creation of fluid transitions across chunks.  相似文献

Juvenile songbirds learn their songs from adults. Birds do not simply learn songs verbatim but they sometimes learn parts of songs from multiple tutors and recombine these into one song sequence. How they segment a particular part and select that as a chunk and how these chunks are recombined are interesting questions to ask, because such segmentation and chunking is also considered to be a basic mechanism in human language acquisition. The song of the Bengalese finch has a complex syntax with variable note‐to‐note transition probabilities and could thus be suitable for the study of segmentation and chunking in birdsong. Thirty‐two male Bengalese finch chicks were reared in a large aviary where 11 adult tutors and 10 adult females were breeding freely. In this environment most male chicks learned songs from several tutors. The song note‐chunks that juveniles copied had higher transition probabilities and shorter silent intervals than did the boundaries of the chunks, suggesting that Bengalese finches segment songs using both statistical and prosodic cues. Thus, the Bengalese finch could prove to be an excellent model in which to study neural and behavioral mechanism for sound segmentation.  相似文献

Chunk decomposition is defined as a cognitive process which breaks up familiar items into several parts to reorganize them in an alternative approach. The present study investigated the effective connectivity of visual streams in chunk decomposition through dynamic causal modeling (DCM). The results revealed that chunk familiarity and perceptual tightness made a combined contribution to highlight not only the “what” and the “where” streams, but also the effective connectivity from the left inferior temporal gyrus to the left superior parietal lobule.  相似文献

A simple method of inclusion probability proportional to sizes is proposed for samples of size three units. It is shown that the variance of the HORVITZ -THOMPSON estimator based on the proposed sampling scheme is uniformly smaller than that of the customary estimator used in the probability proportional to sizes with replacement sampling. Further, its performance over RAO -HARTLEY -COCHRAN and SAMPFORD sampling schemes has been studied empirically for some of the natural populations.  相似文献

Caching techniques have been used widely to improve the performance gaps of storage hierarchies in computing systems. Little is known about the impact of policies on the response times of jobs that access and process very large files in data grids, particularly when data and computations on the data have to be co-located on the same host. In data intensive applications that access large data files over wide area network environment, such as data-grids, the combination of policies for job servicing (or scheduling), caching and cache replacement can significantly impact the performance of grid jobs. We present preliminary results of a simulation study that combines an admission policy with a cache replacement policy when servicing jobs submitted to a storage resource manager.The results show that, in comparison to a first come first serve policy, the response times of jobs are significantly improved, for practical limits of disk cache sizes, when the jobs that are back-logged to access the same files are taken into consideration in scheduling the next file to be retrieved into the disk cache. Not only are the response times of jobs improved, but also the metric measures for caching policies, such as the hit ratio and the average cost per retrieval, are improved irrespective of the cache replacement policy used. Ekow Otoo is research staff scientist with the scientific data management group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley. He received his B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana and a post graduate diploma in Computer Science from the University of Ghana, Legon. In 1977, he received his M.Sc. degree in Computer Science from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne in Britain and his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from McGill University, Montreal, Canada in 1983. He joined the faculty of the School of Computer Science, Carleton University, in 1983 and from 1987 to 1999, he was a tenured faculty member of the School of Computer Science, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. He has served as research consultant to Bell Northern Research, Ottawa, Canada, and as a research project consultant to the GIS Division, Geomatics Canada, Natural Resources Canada, from 1990 to 1998. Ekow Otoo is a member of the ACM and IEEE. His research interests include database management systems, data structures and algorithms, parallel I/O for high performance computing, parallel and distributed computing. Doron Rotem is currently a senior staff scientist and a member of the Data Management group at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. His research interests include Grid Computing, Workflow, Scientific Data Management and Paralled and Distributed Computing and Algorithms. He has published over 80 papers in international journals and conferences in these areas. Prior to that, Dr Rotem co-founded and served as a CTO of a startup company, called CommerceRoute, that made software products in the area of workflow and data integration and before that, he was an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science, University of Waterloo, Canada. Dr. Rotem holds a B.Sc degree in Mathematics and Statistics from the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. Arie Shoshani is a senior staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He joined LBNL in 1976. He heads the Scientific Data Management Group. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1969. From 1969 to 1976, he was a researcher at System Development Corporation, where he worked on the Network Control Program for the ARPAnet, distributed databases, database conversion, and natural language interfaces to data management systems. His current areas of work include data models, query languages, temporal data, statistical and scientific database management, storage management on tertiary storage, and grid storage middleware. Arie is also the director of a Scientific Data Management (SDM) Integrated Software Infrastructure Center (ISIC), one of seven centers selected by the SciDAC program at DOE in 2001. In this capacity, he is coordinating the work of collaborators from 4 DOE laboratories and 4 universities (see: http://sdmcenter.lbl.gov). Dr. Shoshani has published over 65 technical papers in refereed journals and conferences, chaired several workshops, conferences, and panels in database management; and served on numerous program committees for various database conferences. He also served as an associate editor for the ACM Transactions on Database Systems. He was elected a member of the VLDB Endowment Board, served as the Publication Board Chairperson for the VLDB Journal, and as the Vice-President of the VLDB Endowment. Individual differences in memory performance in a domain of expertise have traditionally been accounted for by previously acquired chunks of knowledge and patterns. These accounts have been examined experimentally mainly in chess. The role of chunks (clusters of chess pieces recalled in rapid succession during recall of chess positions) and their relations to chess skill are, however, under debate. By introducing an independent chunk-identification technique, namely repeated-recall technique, this study identified individual chunks for particular chess players. The study not only tested chess players with increasing chess expertise, but also tested non-chess players who should not have previously acquired any chess related chunks in memory. For recall of game positions significant differences between players and non-players were found in virtually all the characteristics of chunks recalled. Size of the largest chunks also correlates with chess skill within the group of rated chess players. Further research will help us understand how these memory encodings can explain large differences in chess skill.  相似文献

The Cox model—which remains the first choice for analyzing time-to-event data, even for large data sets—relies on the proportional hazards (PH) assumption. When survival data arrive sequentially in chunks, a fast and minimally storage intensive approach to test the PH assumption is desirable. We propose an online updating approach that updates the standard test statistic as each new block of data becomes available and greatly lightens the computational burden. Under the null hypothesis of PH, the proposed statistic is shown to have the same asymptotic distribution as the standard version computed on an entire data stream with the data blocks pooled into one data set. In simulation studies, the test and its variant based on most recent data blocks maintain their sizes when the PH assumption holds and have substantial power to detect different violations of the PH assumption. We also show in simulation that our approach can be used successfully with “big data” that exceed a single computer's computational resources. The approach is illustrated with the survival analysis of patients with lymphoma cancer from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program. The proposed test promptly identified deviation from the PH assumption, which was not captured by the test based on the entire data.  相似文献

The organization of video information in video databases requires automatic temporal segmentation with minimal user interaction. As neural networks are capable of learning the characteristics of various video segments and clustering them accordingly, in this paper, a neural network based technique is developed to segment the video sequence into shots automatically and with a minimum number of user-defined parameters. We propose to employ growing neural gas (GNG) networks and integrate multiple frame difference features to efficiently detect shot boundaries in the video. Experimental results are presented to illustrate the good performance of the proposed scheme on real video sequences.  相似文献

Here I report the results of laboratory experiments on cachingbehavior of Carolina chickadees (Parus carolinensis) designedto test the following predictions from a recent dynamic optimizationmodel: under limited resources, small birds, when fat, shouldcache food instead of eating it, but they should eat insteadof caching when lean; when resources are abundant, birds shouldcache less when fat and more when lean. In addition, when resourcesare abundant the amount of time spent in foraging-related activityshould decrease with an increase in body mass. Chickadees weretested for 2 weeks in either a poor-quality environment (wherethey were given four 5-min periods per day of access to a feederfilled with sunflower seeds) or a richer environment (wherethey were given four 10-min access periods); they were thenswitched to the alternative environment for an additional 2weeks. The entire experiment lasted from October through June.Within-individual comparisons showed that birds in both thepoor and rich environments exhibited the predicted correlationsbetween the probability that a seed was cached and body massmeasured at dawn. The number of seeds already stored had a weakand variable effect on caching decisions. Time budgets changedas predicted; birds spent less time with food-related behaviorswhen their energy stores were high compared to when they werelow, and overall spent a higher fraction of their time foragingin the poor-quality environment compared to the rich environment.Two other variables also affected caching behavior: experienceand season. Individuals were more likely to cache in the poorenvironment when they had been tested in the rich environmentthe previous 2 weeks, as compared with birds started in thepoor environment. However, this was true only for tests donein the winter. In late spring, all birds stopped caching orreduced caching rates when faced with limited food availability,irrespective of previous experience. The birds harvested seedsfaster when they cached instead of eating seeds; as a result,long-term weight regulation in the poor environment was affectedby caching decisions. Birds tested in late spring lost weightin the poor environment, whereas those tested in the wintermaintained a stable weight when switched from the rich to thepoor environment. Thus, annual endogenous cues directly affectcaching decisions and indirectly influence the long-term regulationof body mass  相似文献

Parasites may be expected to become locally adapted to their hosts. However, while many empirical studies have demonstrated local parasite adaptation, others have failed to demonstrate it, or have shown local parasite maladaptation. Researchers have suggested that gene flow can swamp local parasite-host dynamics and produce local adaptation only at certain geographical scales; others have argued that evolutionary lags can account for both null and maladaptive results. In this paper, we use item response theory (IRT) to test whether host range influences the likelihood of parasites locally adapting to their hosts. We collated 32 independent experiments testing for local adaptation, where parasites could be assigned as having either broad or narrow host ranges (BHR and NHR, respectively). Twenty-five tests based on BHR parasites had a significantly lower average effect size than seven NHR tests, indicating that studies based on BHR parasites are less likely to demonstrate local parasite adaptation. We argue that this may relate to evolutionary lags during diffuse coevolution of BHR parasites with their hosts, rather than differences in experimental approaches or other confounds between BHR and NHR studies.  相似文献

Cloud computing should inherently support various types of data-intensive workloads with different storage access patterns. This makes a high-performance storage system in the Cloud an important component. Emerging flash device technologies such as solid state drives (SSDs) are a viable choice for building high performance computing (HPC) cloud storage systems to address more fine-grained data access patterns. However, the bit-per-dollar SSD price is still higher than the prices of HDDs. This study proposes an optimized progressive file layout (PFL) method to leverage the advantages of SSDs in a parallel file system such as Lustre so that small file I/O performance can be significantly improved. A PFL can dynamically adjust chunk sizes and stripe patterns according to various I/O traffics. Extensive experimental results show that this approach (i.e. building a hybrid storage system based on a combination of SSDs and HDDs) can actually achieve balanced throughput over mixed I/O workloads consisting of large and small file access patterns.  相似文献

Treatment of cytotoxic murine T lymphocytes (CTL) with certain stilbene disulfonate derivatives results in a dose-related loss of lytic capacity. This effect is reversible and apparently not a function of drug toxicity. Additionally, CTL function is inhibited by isosmotic replacement of extracellular chloride with several relatively membrane-impermeable chloride analogues. Both inhibitory manipulations act on the effector rather than the target cell and are effective only during delivery of the lethal hit. These results suggest that delivery of the lethal hit may involve CTL exocytosis.  相似文献

Agonistic behaviour between male cellar spiders (Pholcus phalangioides) was investigated to test whether (1) size difference determines which male achieves access to the female, (2) males are able to monopolize access to the female until egg laying and whether (3) female resource value increases before egg laying because of last‐male sperm precedence. We further investigated whether (4) there is variation in time and energy spent on courtship and copulation depending on the degree of sperm competition, i.e. with or without rival present. In three experimental settings we introduced two males of either different or similar sizes, or a single male to a female. The mating units were constantly video‐observed until the females produced their first egg sac. Experience, ownership and female resource value in terms of body size was controlled. Our results show that larger males achieve almost exclusive access to females. Size symmetrical settings resulted in increased fighting activity and duration but dominance did not influence mating success. If copulations were disturbed by the rival male, copulations were terminated earlier in symmetrical settings compared with asymmetrical settings. In 94.8% of trials only one copulation took place, suggesting that the copulating male successfully monopolized access to the female. Males confronted with a rival copulated longer but courted significantly shorter than lone males. Although the last male to copulate sires 88% of the offspring in P. phalangioides, neither fighting nor courtship activity increased before the female laid a batch of eggs. This suggests that males have no indication of the timing of oviposition.  相似文献

The mode of tooth development displayed in Chondrichthyans (sharks, rays and holocephalans), one of frequent tooth replacement, was possible once a dental lamina had evolved, and since 1982 this has been known as the odontode regulation theory after Reif. Today, Reif's concepts need to be transformed into those of modern biology, the crosstalk between epithelium and mesenchyme, for the regulation of timing, spacing and shape of vertebrate teeth. Although Reif's proposed ‘primordial tissue’ may be the only site of progenitor cells, to restrict odontogenic potential to time-specific sites (protogerms), as has been suggested in the sequential addition tooth (SAT) model, very little data are available. Here, his model of alternate tooth replacement files has been interpreted as an integrated tooth addition unit of two adjacent files (SAT) unit for alternate replacement of teeth, regulated by putative, precisely timed gene expression for activation and inhibition. We have provided new data on patterns of tooth succession in dentitions of extant sharks and rays to compare with those of Reif. Using a phylogeny combined from molecular and morphological data, it is suggested that the alternate tooth addition and replacement model is derived within Chondrichthyes, and diversified from single file tooth addition of the stem chondrichthyans.  相似文献

Thulborn (1978, Leihaia II ) suggests that ornithischian dinosaurs of the upper Stormberg Series (Late Triassic-Early Jurassic) of southern Africa underwent aestivation during an annual dry season. His argument, based on an interpretation of tooth function and replacement in heterodontosaurids, is: (1) unequivocal evidence of tooth replacement is not seen, and (2) piecemeal replacement of the dentition would be incompatible with maintenance of a fore-aft grinding function of the teeth; therefore, the entire dentition must have been rapidly replaced as a unit during periods of non-feeding, i.e. during aestivation. However, study of tooth wear patterns in Lanasaurus, Lycorhinus , and Heterodontosaurus show that jaw movements during mastication were orthal (open-and-close) and lateral to medial, not forwards and backwards. Differences in degree of tooth wear would not interfere with masticatory movements. Patterns of differential wear indicate that tooth replacement was not periodic but continuous, as in other reptiles. Zahnreihen , with a Z-spacing of about 3.0, are recognizable. Replacement ceased in mature individuals. The dentition shows adaptations for prolonging its effective life despite heavy wear. Differential tooth wear is incompatible with the idea of replacement of the entire dentition as a unit during an hypothesized period of aestivation. Thulborn's suggestion of aestivation in fabrosaurid ornithischians is also shown to be unlikely.  相似文献

The histological inspection of tumor tissue for the purpose of reporting a tumor grade is a problem of significant clinical importance. The grading by a pathologist is only partly reproducible due to vaguely defined, subjective criteria. In this article we describe and evaluate a set of measurable features that quantitate the differences in tumor tissue. Different aspects of the reproducibility of the measurements under varying conditions of image selection, focus, and noise have been investigated. Three hundred thirty-three images were digitized from 111 bladder tissue sections (4 microns thick, Feulgen stained), using the ICAS microscope-camera platform. A segmentation routine was developed to segment the images into nuclei and background without any user interaction. Size, shape, optical density, and texture features were measured on and among the objects found by this segmentation routine using the image analysis package Acuity. The results of the measurements showed that there is a significant quantitative difference between grade 1 and grade 3 tumors. Grade 2 tumors can be described as "in between grade 1 and grade 3" and falling somewhere on an increasing scale between grades 1 and 3. Grade 2 tumors do not seem to represent a statistically distinct population. The procedure described here is shown to be quite reproducible in the presence of noise, reasonably reproducible in the event of a modest amount of defocusing (with grade 3 tumors exhibiting the most sensitivity), and less reproducible in the context of which fields-of-view are chosen for analysis.  相似文献

The flow-induced degradation of T7 DNA (Molecular Size = 40 Kbp) was studied in a flow device that generates converging flow rather than simple shear flow. We discovered that the sizes of the degradation products were very broadly distributed, covering the range from 10 Kbp to 36 Kbp. An explanation for the broadness of the distribution is given based on a computer simulation of the experiment. The significance of converging flow to the routine handling of large DNA is emphasized.  相似文献

Three individually housed bonnet macaque males were given 75 weeks of continuous access to a joystick task with a reward choice of either viewing live color video of a bonnet group or obtaining a banana-flavored food treat. Here we report data for weeks 44-75 following a change in the stimulus group displayed in the video. The new stimulus group enhanced responding to the video for two subjects over the entire 32 weeks of this study, although there was some decline across weeks, and the video continued to be an effective reward for the duration of the study for all subjects.  相似文献
