Invertebrate and ciliate protozoan epibionts of velvet swimming crabs collected near Millport (Scotland) were analysed. The ecdysis peak for male crabs was at the time of collection while that for female crabs was 2 months later. The epibionts were: the polychaetes Pomatoceros triqueter and Hydroides norvegica, the cirriped Balanus crenatus, the entoproct Barentsia matsushimana, the hydroids Leuckartiara sp. and Clytia sp., and the ciliate protozoans Ephelota plana, Ephelota gemmipara, Chilodochona quennerstedti and Cothurnia longipes. The polychaetes, cirripeds, entoprocts and hydroids, all of them with comparatively larger size, were distributed on the carapace, ventral surface of the cephalothorax and the pereiopods; meanwhile the protozoans, with smaller size, were attached also on pleopods, antennae, eyes and buccal appendages. Chilodochona quennerstedti was the epibiont most abundant on the crab, followed by Ephelota plana. Cothurnia longipes was, in contrast, the least abundant epibiont, followed by Barentsia matsushimana. The anatomical unit most colonized was the left third maxilliped, followed by the left first maxilliped and the ventral surface. The less colonized anatomical units were the left antenna and the ocular orbits. Epibionts on this crab have not been described before. Statistical analyses of the epibiont distribution on the crab were carried out. There were significant correlations between right and left appendages in 66.67% of the cases. Males and females differed significantly with respect to the distribution of epibionts on their anatomical units. The comparison analysis indicated a significant differential distribution of each epibiont species on the anatomical units of the crab. Principal component analysis grouped the epibiont species according to their colonization pattern in three clusters: (1) Ephelota plana, Ephelota gemmipara and Chilodochona quennerstedti; (2) Leuckartiara sp., Clytia sp., Barentsia matsushimana and Cothurnia longipes; and (3) Pomatoceros triqueter, Balanus crenatus and Hydroides norvegica. The hierarchical cluster analysis grouped the anatomical units of the crab in relation to their colonization in five clusters.  相似文献

Protozoan and hydrozoan epibionts on the hermit crab Pagurus bernhardus and its shell, collected near Cumbrae Island (Scotland) were studied. The epibionts found were the following: (1) protozoans: the suctorian ciliates Ephelota plana, Acineta compressa, Conchacineta constricta, Corynophrya anisostyla; the peritrich ciliates Cothurnia mobiusi and Zoothamnium plumula; the chonotrich ciliate Chilodochona quennerstedti; and (2) hydrozoans: the species Leuckartiara sp. and Clytia sp. The morphological characteristics of the epibionts were analysed, as well as their taxonomic position. The distribution of epibionts on the crab surface and its shell was studied, and the density and biomass of epibionts were calculated on each anatomic unit. There was a differential distribution according to the type of epibiont: hydrozoans dominated in biovolume and were present mainly on the shell, meanwhile protozoans represented the highest fraction of density and they were found exclusively on the crab (principally on eyes, antennulae, antennae, maxillipeds, pereopods and uropods). The anterior area of the cephalothorax was the most colonized. On this area, the maxillipeds and second pereopods showed the highest densities. The location of each epibiont species was described. There was a correlation between the length of the crab and the total number of hydrozoans. There was a significant correlation between the right and the left units of the crab, taking into consideration the mean densities of epibionts on each anatomical unit. The shell was colonized by the same species of hydrozoa that appeared on the crab, although in a much higher density (mean 3024.38 per shell; 6.9 per crab). There was a significant difference between both species of hydrozoan epibionts with respect to the mean densities on the different areas of the shell. The zone of the shell more occupied by Clytia sp. was the apical zone of the shell, while the highest densities of Leuckartiara sp. were registered near the aperture of the shell. The hydrozoan and protozoan epibiont species found on P. bernhardus in this study represent the first mention of their presence on this hermit crab.  相似文献

Fernandez‐Leborans, G. 2011. Epibionts on the krill (Euphausia pacifica) from the E coast of Japan. —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 00 : 1–10. Specimens of Euphausia pacifica collected from shallow waters of the E coast of Japan showed ciliate epibionts belonging to two suctorian species: Ephelota plana and Gymnodinioides sp. The epibionts were present in a total of 27 anatomical units of E. pacifica, in numbers fluctuating between 8 and 80 individuals per basibiont. Gymnodinioides showed the highest mean number of epibionts. The presence–absence of epibionts indicated some specificity of the species by different locations on the basibiont body, which is corroborated by the analysis of the colonization throughout the longitudinal axis of the basibiont. Ephelota plana was recorded by the first time on E. pacifica, while Gymnodinioides sp. extended its geographical area with respect to previous studies. Morphological, taxonomical features of the species and the statistical analysis of their spatial distribution on E. pacifica are included.  相似文献

The invasive green crab, Carcinus maenas, has recently expanded its range into the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence, where there is potential for substantial niche overlap with juvenile American lobsters, Homarus americanus. We used two experiments to elicit, record and analyze the agonistic interactions of adult green crabs (carapace width of 63-75 mm) and sub-adult (carapace length of 55-70 mm) lobsters. The first experiment gave each animal equal access to a limited food resource. The green crabs were first to the food in significantly more trials, spent a significantly greater proportion of time with the food, and were able to successfully defend the food from attacks by the heavier lobsters. In the second experiment, we allowed the lobsters to gain possession and initiate feeding on the food before releasing the green crabs. In these trials, the lobsters spent significantly more time with the food, and were able to defend the food from the green crabs. The results of both experiments are discussed in the context of game theory. The different behaviour of the crustaceans in the two experiments is consistent with the “bourgeois” strategy in a hawk and dove game simulation. With this strategy, an animal acts like a hawk if in possession of a resource, but acts like a dove if the other animal is in possession of the resource. The fact that the green crabs were able to physically compete with, and in many cases dominate the larger, heavier lobsters supports the potential for competitive impacts of green crabs on sub-adult lobsters.  相似文献

In this study, we describe for the first time the composition of epibiotic protozoan communities on juvenile southern king crabs Lithodes santolla. Basibionts were collected in subantarctic bays near Santa Ana Point (Magellan Strait, Chile). Seven epibiotic protozoan ciliates were found: Ephelota gemmipara, Ephelota gigantea, Podophrya fixa, Acineta tuberosa, Zoothamnium duplicatum, Chilodochona quennerstedti and Gymnodinioides sp. The mean number of epibionts per crab was 99 (maximum 897). Both Ephelota species were the most abundant and most widely distributed epibionts on the crab examined. The lengths of basibionts were correlated with the number of epibionts, indicating a relationship between the age of the crab and the state of epibiosis. Epibionts differed in their distribution patterns along the anteroposterior axis of the crab. Less abundant species tended to occupy sites that are not colonized by the predominant Ephelota species. Maxillipeds and pereiopods were most densely colonized by epibionts. The behaviours of epibionts and basibionts related to epibiosis are discussed. The recent studies about invasive lithodids in Antarctic areas enhance the interest for the epibiotic communities colonizing these crustaceans, which can illustrate changes in biodiversity and state of these environments.  相似文献

A previously unknown association between a luminous Vibrio sp., taxonomically related to the species Vibrio harveyi and a common member of the shallow/mid water communities of the Mediterranean Sea, the hydrozoan Clytia linearis is described. All the specimens of C. linearis observed under blue light excitation showed both a natural luminescence appearing as a series of fine dots due to clytin, and a clear fluorescence on the external side of the perisarc around the colonies due to the presence of luminous bacteria. Luminous bacteria were isolated from the surface of C. linearis, their phenotypic characterization as isolates was performed by several morphological, biochemical, and cultural tests, completed with 16S rDNA sequence analysis. All the isolates were referred to a Vibrio sp. taxonomically related to V. harveyi. The association of the V. harveyi-related species with C. linearis, as already suggested for another hydroid, Aglaophenia octodonta, could be explained with the activity of these bacteria of feeding on the chitinous structures present in these hydroids. Moreover, the adhesion of the luminous bacterium (here referred to as Vibrio sp. CL1) on C. linearis may contribute to the survival of this Vibrio species in the marine environment providing a suitable growth habitat.  相似文献

The heterotrich ciliate Mirofolliculina limnoriae occurs in an obligate association with wood-boring species of the isopod Limnoria. It attaches to the dorsal surface of the limnoriid pleotelson. Folliculinid-bearing populations of Limnoria tripunctata from the Ria Formosa, Portugal, and of Limnoria quadripunctata from Portsmouth, UK, were sampled. Up to four folliculinids were found on one individual of L. quadripunctata and up to twelve on L. tripunctata. There was no evidence that folliculinid load increased with host size. The nature of the epibiont/basibiont relationship was examined by observing animals with and without epibionts, kept individually with small sticks of wood in cell culture wells over periods of up to 15 days. Faecal pellet production and moulting were recorded. In both host species, feeding rate as measured by faecal pellet production was significantly lower in animals bearing folliculinids. Feeding rate also diminished with the onset of moulting, but returned to the original rate within a week after moulting. The estimated intermoult period for the population of L. tripunctata examined was about 25 days and for L. quadripunctata was about 32 days. However, the proportion of individuals moulting over the period of observation declined with increasing size in L. tripunctata, suggesting increasing length of intermoult period with age. As the host faces toward the blind end of its tunnel and ventilates the burrow with its pleopods, the folliculinids are well placed to intercept particulate food in the incoming water stream. There are no clear advantages for the host in the association, but the suppression of feeding and the potential of the folliculinids to hinder swimming during dispersal migrations indicate that the association should be viewed as ectoparasitism rather than mutualism or commensalism.  相似文献

Predation on flatfish during the early juvenile stage is an important factor regulating year-class strength and recruitment. In this study, immunological dietary analysis was performed on green crabs (Carcinus maenas) collected from the Niantic River, Connecticut, in an effort to evaluate the predatory impact of this species on post-settlement winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus). Through the use of species-specific antiserum, winter flounder proteins were identified in 4.8% of the green crab stomachs analyzed (n = 313, size range = 14-74 mm carapace width, CW), revealing that crabs ≥ 29 mm CW are predators of post-settlement winter flounder in natural populations. The most significant factor underlying the predator-prey interaction was the relative size relationship between species, such that the incidence of winter flounder remains in the stomach contents of green crabs was positively correlated with predator-to-prey size ratio. Results from dietary analysis were incorporated into a deterministic model to estimate the average daily instantaneous mortality and cumulative mortality of winter flounder owing to green crab predation. Accordingly, green crabs may account for 0.4% to 7.7% (mean = 2.2%) of the daily mortality of winter flounder and consume 1.1% to 32.3% (mean = 10.2%) of the flounder year-class. Model simulations further indicate that variations in green crab abundance and size-structure account for the greatest variability in winter flounder mortality. Relative to other macro-crustacean predators, however, predation by green crabs has a minimal effect on winter flounder survival, due in large part to the low densities of these crabs in temperate estuaries.  相似文献

The Atlantic rock crab, Cancer irroratus, is a commercially fished species and a critical prey item for the American lobster, Homarus americanus, in Atlantic Canada. The recent invasion of European green crab, Carcinus maenas, may have significant effects on the growth and condition of native C. irroratus, because both species overlap spatially and temporally and have similar habitat and dietary requirements. To examine such potential effects, we measured the growth of juvenile C. irroratus in the presence of juvenile C. maenas over a period of 4 months (growing season), under the following species combinations: (1) one C. irroratus (10-25 mm CW); (2) two C. irroratus (10-25 mm CW); (3) one C. irroratus (10-25 mm CW) and one C. maenas (10-15 mm CW). Morphological measurements included pre- and post-molt carapace width, chela height, abdomen width (mm), weight (g), and estimates of molt increment (%) and intermolt duration (days). Analysis of the hepatopancreas for % lipid content at the end of the experiment provided an estimate of physiological condition. The effect of the presence of C. maenas on the growth of C. irroratus shifted from negative to positive, when C. irroratus reached CW of 19-22 mm and gained a presumably significant size advantage over C. maenas. The positive effect resulted from increased energy intake through crab consumption. In the absence of crab consumption, the presence of a second crab (conspecific or C. maenas) had no effect on growth. C. irroratus consumed crabs more frequently when the second individual was a green crab than a conspecific. Consumption of C. maenas had a pronounced effect on the growth rate of C. irroratus, resulting in shorter intermolt periods and larger percent molt increments than in the presence of a conspecific. Therefore, the presence of juvenile C. maenas does not appear to have a prolonged negative effect on the growth of C. irroratus; rather, it may provide an additional food item as rock crabs grow, as long as encounters between the two species occur at high enough rates.  相似文献

In the western Baltic Sea, the highly competitive blue mussel Mytilus edulis tends to monopolize shallow water hard substrata. In many habitats, mussel dominance is mainly controlled by the generalist predator Carcinus maenas. These predator-prey interactions seem to be affected by mussel size (relative to crab size) and mussel epibionts. There is a clear relationship between prey size and predator size as suggested by the optimal foraging theory: Each crab size class preferentially preys on a certain mussel size class. Preferred prey size increases with crab size.Epibionts on Mytilus, however, influence this simple pattern of feeding preferences by crabs. When offered similarly sized mussels, crabs prefer Balanus-fouled mussels over clean mussels. There is, however, a hierarchy of factors: the influence of attractive epibiotic barnacles is weaker than the factor ‘mussel size’. Testing small mussels against large mussels, presence or absence of epibiotic barnacles does not significantly alter preferences caused by mussel size. Balanus enhanced crab predation on mussels in two ways: Additional food gain and, probably more important, improvement in handling of the prey. The latter effect is illustrated by the fact that artificial barnacle mimics increased crab predation on mussels to the same extent as do live barnacles. We conclude that crab predation preferences follows the optimal foraging model when prey belong to different size classes, whereas within size classes crab preferences is controlled by epibionts.  相似文献

Ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) are associated with strictly entomochoric and mutualistic fungi. We studied the mycobiota associated with Scolytodes unipunctatus, ambrosia beetles that infest Cecropia trees in Central America. Isolates were characterized using morphology and rDNA sequences (ITS region, LSU, and SSU rDNA). Four species are described here: Raffaelea scolytodis sp. nov. (Ophiostomatales), Gondwanamyces scolytodis sp. nov., Custingophora cecropiae sp. nov., and Graphium sp. (Microascales). The genus Custingophora is emended to include Knoxdaviesia anamorphs of Gondwanamyces based on uniformity of DNA sequences and phenotype.  相似文献

Hyas araneus is the most common brachyuran crab in the coastal Barents Sea. Its epibionts were occasionally examined in 1940–1950s. To obtain modern information about associated organisms living on the crabs and compare new data with previous findings, the species composition, infestation indices, and spatial distribution of macro-epibionts colonizing H. araneus were examined in Dalnezelenetskaya Bay, a small semi-open gulf, in summer 2008–2010. A total of 41 taxa were observed on 48 crabs collected from depths ranging from 5 to 28 m. Red algae Ptilota plumosa (prevalence 39.6%) and Palmaria palmata (37.5%) as well as the copepod Harpacticus uniremis (39.6%) and the tube-dwelling worm Placostegus tridentatus (35.4%) predominated on the crabs. Infestation indices were similar in male and female crabs except for the turbellarian worm Peraclistus oophagus. Comparison with the previous study showed some changes in H. araneus fouling community that may be attributed to the shift of climatic regime or differences in sampling procedures. Presence of the amphipod Ischyrocerus commensalis, a new epibiont of H. araneus in the study area may be associated with introduction of the red king crab Paralithodes camtschaticus. Infestation indices of common epibionts depend on the crab shell conditions. Localization of epibionts strongly depended on the settlement patterns of larvae and host-associate relationships. Typical fouling organisms were found predominantly on the carapaces or limbs, while the majority of mobile species were recorded on the gills. Colonization of great spider crabs is beneficial for the epibiont species, whereas some negative effects for the basibiont could not be excluded.  相似文献

A disease caused by a parasitic dinoflagellate of the genus Hematodinium was identified in red, Paralithodes camtschaticus, and blue, Paralithodes platypus, king crabs from the north-east region of the Sea of Okhotsk, Russia, during annual stock surveys. No carapace color change was observed even in heavily infected crabs, but diseased crabs possessed creamy-yellow hemolymph, which was visible through the arthrodial membranes of the abdomen and appendages. Several stages of the parasite’s life history, including trophonts, plasmodia, sporonts and macrodinospores, were observed in tissues of infected king crabs. Numerous parasite cells were observed in the lumina of the myocardium, the gills, the connective tissue of antennal glands and the sinuses of nerve ganglia, eyestalks and gastrointestinal tract of king crabs with gross signs of infection. Based on sequencing of the 18S rDNA, it appears that the Hematodinium sp. found in red and blue king crabs is identical or closely related to Hematodinium sp. isolated from crabs of the genera Chionoecetes and Lithodes. Observed prevalences were 0.33% in sublegal male red king crabs, 0.18% in female red king crabs, 0.34% in sublegal male blue king crabs and 0.31% in female blue king crabs.  相似文献

The fiddler crab Uca panamensis (Stimpson, 1959) inhabits rocky shores. We examined its preference for feeding substratum—sand or rock—and its manner of feeding. The crab made its burrow in the sand among rocks but preferred to feed on rocks. The feeding time decreased as the distance between the burrow and the rock increased. We consider this to be a result of exclusive interaction among the crabs because they defended their feeding area on the rocks against others. The crab wetted a small area of rock with water held in the branchial chambers before and during feeding. It pinched up the wetted surface in the minor chelipeds, which have bundles of setae on the posterior tips of the dactyl and pollex, and put the material into its buccal cavity. It never expelled sand pellets while feeding on rock, which indicates that it swallowed the food particles directly, without sorting. The bundles of setae retained water by capillary attraction, which suggests that they capture the suspended fine food particles scraped from the rock. The wetting action may prevent the fine materials from dispersing. We consider that morphological alteration of the minor chelipeds, the application of water from the branchial chambers, and direct swallowing permit the fiddler crab to feed on fine materials attached to rocks.  相似文献

Dark, septate endophytes (DSE) were isolated from roots and needles of dwarf Picea abies and from roots of Vaccinium spp. growing on a permafrost site in the Jura Mountains in Switzerland. Two of the isolates sporulated after incubation for more than one year at 4 °C. One of them was a hitherto undescribed helotialean ascomycete Phaeomollisia piceae gen. sp. nov., the other was a new species of Phialocephala, P. glacialis sp. nov. Both species are closely related to DSE of the Phialocephala fortinii s. lat.-Acephala applanata species complex (PAC) as revealed by phylogenetic analyses of the ITS and 18S rDNA regions. Morphologically dissimilar fungi, such as Vibrissea and Loramyces species, are phylogenetically also closely linked to the new species and the PAC. Cadophora lagerbergii and C. (Phialophora) botulispora are moved to Phialocephala because Phialocephala dimorphospora and P. repens are the closest relatives. Several Mollisia species were closely related to the new species and the PAC according to ITS sequence comparisons. One DSE from needles of Abies alba and one from shoots of Castanea sativa formed Cystodendron anamorphs in culture. Their identical 18S sequences and almost identical ITS sequences indicated Mollisia species as closest relatives, suggesting that Mollisia species are highly euryoecious.  相似文献

Studies on the interaction between the hermit crab Pagurus longicarpus and its symbiotic hydroid Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus have focused on positive effects of hydroids on their host hermit crabs (e.g., protection from predators). Yet, these benefits may be balanced with reproductive costs, which are rarely studied. Results from field observations, laboratory trials, and a mesocosm experiment indicate that female hermit crabs in hydroid-colonized shells exhibit depressed ovigery, smaller clutch sizes, and increased clutch failure relative to females in bare shells. Frequent switching between bare and hydroid-colonized shells may alleviate negative effects when the density of hydroids in the environment is low, but at high densities Hydractinia may significantly impact hermit crab reproduction.  相似文献

The genera Haplocytheridea and Cytheridea have Tethyan origins and a wide paleobiogeographic and stratigraphic distribution, ranging from the Cretaceous to Recent. Both of them have been recorded in northern South America, but only Cytheridea has been found in the northern Cretaceous basins of Brazil. The genus Haplocytheridea is recorded, for the first time, in the Early Miocene deposits of the Pirabas Formation of northern Brazil, from a 20 m-thick succession of carbonate and argillaceous rocks deposited in lagoonal and restricted platform environments. Among the ten Haplocytheridea species identified, four are new: H. variopunctata n. sp., H. sandbergi n. sp., H. pirabasensis n. sp. and H. sinuosa n. sp. In addition, three new species of Cytheridea are also described: C. coimbrai n. sp., C. pirabasensis n. sp. and C. purperae n. sp. The highest frequencies and abundances of both genera, in the studied section, are thought to be associated with nearshore to brackish water settings.  相似文献

Two new gregarines in the recently erected genus Psychodiella (formerly Ascogregarina), Psychodiella sergenti n. sp. and Psychodiella tobbi n. sp., are described based on morphology and life cycle observations conducted on larvae and adults of their natural hosts, the sand flies Phlebotomus sergenti and Phlebotomus tobbi, respectively. The phylogenetic analyses inferred from small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) sequences indicate the monophyly of newly described species with Psychodiella chagasi. Ps. sergenti n. sp. and Ps. tobbi n. sp. significantly differ from each other in the life cycle and in the size of life stages. The sexual development of Ps. sergenti n. sp. (syzygy, formation of gametocysts and oocysts) takes place exclusively in blood-fed Ph. sergenti females, while the sexual development of Ps. tobbi n. sp. takes place also in males and unfed females of Ph. tobbi. The susceptibility of Phlebotomus perniciosus, Phlebotomus papatasi, Ph. sergenti, Ph. tobbi, and Phlebotomus arabicus to both gregarines was examined by exposing 1st instar larvae to parasite oocysts. High host specificity was observed, as both gregarines were able to fully develop and complete regularly the life cycle only in their natural hosts. Both gregarines are considered as serious pathogens in laboratory-reared colonies of Old World sand flies.  相似文献
