The purpose of this investigation was to determine the influence of contraction velocity on the eccentric (ECC) and concentric (CON) torque production of the biceps brachii. After performing warm-up procedures, each male subject (n = 11) completed 3 sets of 5 maximal bilateral CON and ECC isokinetic contractions of the biceps at speeds of 90, 180, and 300 degrees x s(-1) on a Biodex System 3 dynamometer. The men received a 3-minute rest between sets and the order of exercises was randomized. Peak torque (Nm) values were obtained for CON and ECC contractions at each speed. Peak torque scores (ECC vs. CON) were compared using a t-test at each speed. A repeated measures analysis of variance was used to determine differences between speeds. ECC peak torque scores were greater than CON peak torque scores at each given speed: 90 degrees x s(-1), p = 0.0001; 180 degrees x s(-1), p = 0.0001; and 300 degrees x s(-1), p = 0.0001. No differences were found between the ECC peak torque scores (p = 0.62) at any of the speeds. Differences were found among the CON scores (p = 0.004). Post hoc analysis revealed differences between 90 degrees x s(-1) (114.61 +/- 23) and 300 degrees x s(-1) (94.17 +/- 18). These data suggest that ECC contractions of the biceps brachii were somewhat resistant to a force decrement as the result of an increase in velocity, whereas CON muscular actions of the biceps brachii were unable to maintain force as velocity increased.  相似文献

Although research has demonstrated that isokinetic eccentric (ECC) strength is 20-60% greater than isokinetic concentric (CON) strength, few data exist comparing these strength differences in standard dynamic resistance exercises. The purpose of the study was to determine the difference in maximal dynamic ECC and CON strength for 6 different resistance exercises in young men and women. Ten healthy young men (mean +/- SE, 25.30 +/- 1.34 years), and 10 healthy young women (mean +/- SE, 23.40 +/- 1.37 years) who were regular exercisers with resistance training experience participated in the study. Two sessions were performed to determine CON and ECC 1 repetitions maximum for latissimus pull-down (LTP), leg press (LP), bench press (BP), leg extension (LE), seated military press (MP), and leg curl (LC) exercises. Maximal ECC and maximal CON strength were determined on weight stack machines modified to isolate ECC and CON contractions using steel bars and pulleys such that only 1 type of contraction was performed. Within 2 weeks, participants returned and completed a retest trial in a counterbalanced fashioned. Test-retest reliability was excellent (r = 0.99) for all resistance exercise trials. Men demonstrated 20-60% greater ECC than CON strength (LTP = 32%, LP = 44%, BP = 40%, LE = 35%, MP = 49%, LC = 27%). Women's strength exceeded the proposed parameters for greater ECC strength in 4 exercises, p < 0.05 (LP = 66%, BP = 146%, MP = 161%, LC = 82%). The ECC/CON assessment could help coaches capitalize on muscle strength differences in young men and women during training to aid in program design and injury prevention and to enhance strength development.  相似文献

Muscle contractions preceding an activity can result in increased force generation (postactivation potentiation [PAP]). Although the type of muscular contractions could affect subsequent strength and power performance, little information exists on their effects. The purpose of this study was to examine PAP effects produced by isometric (ISO), concentric (CON), eccentric (ECC), or concentric-eccentric (DYN) conditioning contractions on upper body force and power performance. Ten male, competitive rugby players (mean ± SD: age 20.4 ± 0.8 years, height 177.0 ± 8.1 cm, body mass 90.2 ± 13.8 kg) performed a ballistic bench press throw (BBPT) followed by a 10-minute rest and one of the conditioning contractions. After a 12-minute rest, the subjects performed another BBPT (post-BBPT). The conditioning contractions, applied on separate days and in counterbalanced randomized order, were a 7-second isometric barbell bench press for ISO and 1 set of 3 bench press repetitions at 3 repetition maximum for CON, ECC, and DYN (each repetition lasting 2 seconds for CON and ECC, overall execution time <7 seconds for DYN). Peak power (Ppeak), peak force (Fpeak), maximum distance (Dmax) and rate of force development (RFD) were measured using a linear position transducer. Electromyography (EMG) of the pectoralis major and triceps brachii was also recorded. The ISO produced significantly higher Ppeak (587 ± 116 and 605 ± 126 W for pre- and post-BBPT, respectively; p < 0.05). No significant differences in Ppeak were revealed for CON, ECC, and DYN (p > 0.05), and no significant differences existed in Fpeak, Dmax, and RFD for ISO, CON, ECC, and DYN (p > 0.05). Finally, EMG was not significantly different between pre- and post-BBPT for any of the conditioning contractions (p > 0.05). Isometric contractions appear to be the only conditioning contractions increasing upper body power output after long resting periods.  相似文献

This study quantified the interaction of electromyography (EMG) obtained from the vastus lateralis and metabolic energy cost of running (C(r); mL·[mass+load](-1)·meter(-1)), an index of running economy, during submaximal treadmill running. Experiments were conducted with and without load on the back on a motor-driven treadmill on the downhill, level and uphill slopes. The obtained EMG was full-wave rectified and integrated (iEMG). The iEMG was divided into eccentric (ECC) and concentric (CON) phases with a foot sensor and a knee-joint goniometer. The ratio of ECC to CON (ECC/CON ratio) was regarded as the muscle elastic capacity during running on each slope. The C(r) was determined as the ratio of the 2-min steady-state VO(2) to the running speed. We found a significant decrease in the C(r) when carrying the load at all slopes. The ECC/CON ratio was significantly higher in the load condition at the downhill and level slopes, but not at the uphill slope. A significant gradient difference was observed in the C(r) (downuphill). Thus, an alteration of Cr by the gradient and load was almost consistent with that of the ECC/CON ratio. The ECC/CON ratio, but not the rotative torque (T) functioning around the center of body mass, significantly correlated with C(r) (r=-0.41, p<0.05). These results indicated that the ECC/CON ratio, rather than T, contributed to one of the energy-saving mechanisms during running with load.  相似文献

High intensity strength training causes changes in steroid hormone concentrations. This could be altered by the muscular contraction type: eccentric or concentric. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of the completion of a short concentric (CON) and concentric/eccentric (CON/ECC) trial on the urinary steroid profile, both with the same total work. 18 males performed the trials on an isokinetic dynamometer (BIODEX III) exercising quadriceps muscles, right and left, on different days. Trial 1(CON): 4×10 Concentric knee extension + relax knee flexion, speed 60°/second; rest 90 seconds between each series and 4 minutes between each leg exercise. Trial 2(CON/ECC): 4×5 concentric knee extension + Eccentric knee flexion under similar conditions. Urine samples were taken before the exercise and one hour after finishing it. Androsterone, Etiocholanolone, DHEA, Androstenedione, Testosterone, Epitestosterone, Dehydrotestosterone, Estrone, B-Estradiol, Tetrahydrocortisone, Tetrahydrocortisol, Cortisone and Cortisol (free, glucoconjugated and sulfoconjugated) urinary values were determined using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry techniques. No significant differences were noted in Total Work and Average Peak Torque, although Maximum Peak Torque in the CON/ECC trial was higher than in the CON trial. These results demonstrate no changes in the steroid profile before and after trials, or when comparing CON to CON/ECC trials. The data suggest that eccentric contractions do not cause hormonal changes different to the ones produced by concentric contractions, when they are performed in strength short trials with the same total workload.  相似文献

Aim. The purpose of this study was to determine the neuromuscular fatigue profiles during 100 s isometric (ISO), concentric (CON), and eccentric (ECC) activity.

Methods. Twelve subjects (age 25.1±3.7 years, mass 70.1±8.2 kg, mean±SD) performed ISO, CON and ECC maximal voluntary contractions and 100 s endurance trials on an isokinetic dynamometer. Raw EMG data were recorded throughout each trial from the rectus femoris of the right limb. Corresponding data for integrated electromyography (IEMG), percentile frequency shifts (MPFS) and peak torque output were divided into five 5 s epochs and subsequently normalised with the first epoch being the reference point, in order to assess changes over time.

Results. There were no significant differences between ECC, CON and ISO peak torque output (211±63 vs 169±41 vs 177±61 Nm; ECC, CON, ISO) and IEMG activity (280±143 vs 305±146 vs 287±143 mV; ECC, CON, ISO) during maximal contractions. Serial reductions in torque output were greatest in ISO in which torque output during the final epoch was 31±13% of initial values, similar to the final torque values in CON (58±15%), but significantly less than ECC (108.6±38.6%; P<0.001) values. In CON and ECC, IEMG was maintained (95±27% and 93±21%; CON and ECC), whereas IEMG for ISO decreased to 38±13% of initial values. The greatest reduction in MPFS occurred in CON (69±10%) compared to ISO (78±9%; P<0.05) and ECC (93±6%; P<0.001).

Conclusion. These data demonstrate distinct neuromuscular fatigue profiles for the different types of muscle contraction. Whereas eccentric activity was largely fatigue resistant, isometric and concentric contractions displayed different neuromuscular fatigue profiles.  相似文献

The mechanism(s) of load-induced muscle hypertrophy is as yet unclear, but increasing evidence suggests a role for locally expressed insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I). We investigated the effects of concentric (CON) vs. eccentric (ECC) loading on muscle IGF-I mRNA concentration. We hypothesized a greater IGF-I response after ECC compared with CON. Ten healthy subjects (24.4 +/- 0.7 yr, 174.5 +/- 2.6 cm, 70.9 +/- 4.3 kg) completed eight sets of eight CON or ECC squats separated by 6-10 days. IGF-I, IGF binding protein-4 (IGFBP-4), and androgen receptor (AR) mRNA concentrations were determined in vastus lateralis muscle by RT-PCR before and 48 h after ECC and CON. Serum total testosterone (TT) and IGF-I were measured serially across 48 h, and serum creatine kinase activity (CK), isometric maximum voluntary contraction (MVC), and soreness were determined at 48 h. IGF-I mRNA concentration increased 62% and IGFBP-4 mRNA concentration decreased 57% after ECC (P < 0.05). Changes after CON were similar but not significant (P = 0.06-0.12). AR mRNA concentration increased (P < 0.05) after ECC (63%) and CON (102%). Serum TT and IGF-I showed little change. MVC fell 10% and CK rose 183% after ECC (P < 0.05). Perceived soreness was higher (P < 0.01) after ECC compared with CON. Results indicate that a single bout of mechanical loading in humans alters activity of the muscle IGF-I system, and the enhanced response to ECC suggests that IGF-I may somehow modulate tissue regeneration after mechanical damage.  相似文献

Thiazide diuretics are used commonly to treat hypertension. Unfortunately, they also are known to elevate serum cholesterol levels. Because serum lipid fraction levels differ between the sexes, possible sex-related differences in thiazide-induced changes in serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels were examined. Four groups of male and female hamsters were treated for a minimum of 3 months with hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) at zero, 1, 2 or 4 mg/kg/day. At zero dose, there was no difference in TG levels between the sexes; however, females had significantly higher TG concentrations than did males at 1, 2 and 4 mg HCTZ (all p less than 0.05). Females demonstrate a significant dose response with HCL-C levels increasing with increasing doses of HCTZ, (r = 0.983; p less than 0.02); in contrast males had a similar increase in HDL-C at all dose levels (all p less than 0.05) thus there was no demonstrable dose response (r = 0.539). Total cholesterol concentrations were significantly higher in the females than in males (p less than 0.05) at all 3 dose levels as well as at zero dose. Further, the females demonstrated a direct dose response in TC levels (r = 0.986; p less than 0.02) while the males showed no such dose response (r = 0.824; p less than 0.01). Based on these findings we conclude that: 1) HCTZ increases TG, TC and HDL-C levels in both male and female hamsters; 2) TC levels are higher in females than in males regardless of HCTZ dose; 3) only females show a dose-dependent increase in HCL-C and TC in response to HCTZ. These sex-related changes in lipid fractions occurring with HCTZ treatment, if they occur in humans, may contribute to sex-related differences in rates and severity of atherosclerosis in HCTZ-treated populations.  相似文献

This study examined the time course of glycogen accumulation in skeletal muscle depleted by concentric work and subsequently subjected to eccentric exercise. Eight men exercised to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer [70% of maximal O2 consumption (VO2max)] and were placed on a carbohydrate-restricted diet. Approximately 12 h later they exercised one leg to subjective failure by repeated eccentric action of the knee extensors against a resistance equal to 120% of their one-repetition maximum concentric knee extension force (ECC leg). The contralateral leg was not exercised and served as a control (CON leg). During the 72-h recovery period, subjects consumed 7 g carbohydrate.kg body wt-1.day-1. Moderate soreness was experienced in the ECC leg 24-72 h after eccentric exercise. Muscle biopsies from the vastus lateralis of the ECC and CON legs revealed similar glycogen levels immediately after eccentric exercise (40.2 +/- 5.2 and 47.6 +/- 6.4 mmol/kg wet wt, respectively; P greater than 0.05). There was no difference in the glycogen content of ECC and CON legs after 6 h of recovery (77.7 +/- 7.9 and 85.1 +/- 4.9 mmol/kg wet wt, respectively; P greater than 0.05), but 18 h later, the ECC leg contained 15% less glycogen than the CON leg (90.2 +/- 8.2 vs. 105.8 +/- 8.9 mmol/kg wet wt; P less than 0.05). After 72 h of recovery, this difference had increased to 24% (115.8 +/- 8.0 vs. 153.0 +/- 12.2 mmol/kg wet wt; P less than 0.05). We investigated the time course effects of eccentric training on muscular size, strength, and growth factor/cytokine production by using an isokinetic-exercise system for rats. Male Wistar rats (n = 34) were randomly assigned into 4 groups: 5 session eccentric-training group (ECC5S, n = 10); 5 session sham-operated group (CON5S, n = 10); 10 session eccentric-training group (ECC10S, n = 7); 10 session sham-operated group (CON10S, n = 7). In each group, a session of either training or sham operation was performed every 2 days. The training consisted of 4 sets of forced dorsiflexion (5 repetitions) combined with electric stimulation of plantar flexors. The wet weight of medial gastrocnemius muscle did not increase significantly after 5 sessions of training, whereas that after 10 sessions of training significantly increased with a concomitant increase in the cross-sectional area (CSA) of muscle fibers (weight, p < 0.05; fiber CSA, p < 0.001). Interleukin (IL)-6 in ECC5S and ECC10S groups showed significant increases (p < 0.01), whereas those of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and IL-10 did not. The phospho-stat-3 showed a significant increase in ECC10S (p < 0.001) but not in ECC5S. Myostatin and follistatin also showed significant differences only between ECC10S and CON10S (p < 0.05). The results showed that repeated sessions of eccentric training for 20 days cause increases in muscular size and strength associated with increases in IL-6, follistatin, phospho-stat-3, and a decrease in myostatin. The delayed responses of IL-6, myostatin, phospho-stat-3, and follistatin would be due to the chronic effects of repeated training and possibly important for muscular hypertrophy.  相似文献

Previous research has demonstrated that prior exercise may reduce the magnitude of muscle soreness and impaired function (i.e., repeated bout effect [RBE]) observed during subsequent eccentric exercise. Previous investigations have predominantly used research designs that include single-joint exercise performed by untrained individuals. It is unknown how resistance trained individuals respond to novel multi-joint eccentric actions of the upper body and whether prior exercise offers protection. Thirty-one resistance trained men (23.4 +/- 3.5 y, 177.2 +/- 5.1 cm, 86.4 +/- 16.5 kg, mean +/- SD) were randomly assigned to repeated bout ([RB] N = 15) or single bout ([CON] N = 16) conditions. Both groups performed 100 eccentric actions of the bench press ([ECC] at 70% concentric 1 repetition maximum) to induce muscle injury. Bilateral maximal isometric force, dynamic exercise performance (e.g., bench press throws), and muscle soreness were measured before, immediately after, and at 24 and 48 hours post-ECC. Total work, percent fatigue, and rating of perceived exertion (ECC) data were collected during ECC. Those assigned to RB condition exhibited less fatigue (9.5 vs. 22.6%) and lower RPE (14.8 vs. 17.1) during ECC. A significant interaction (p < 0.05) was found such that RB individuals experienced less soreness at 24 (6.5 vs. 4.9) and 48 (6.6 vs. 3.9) hours postexercise than the CON condition. No significant group differences (p < 0.05) were found for any measured performance variable. Although soreness, fatigue, and RPE suggest a RBE, this was not found in regards to exercise performance. It appears that in trained men, performing a strenuous high-volume eccentric exercise bout 2 weeks prior to an identical future bout offers no additional amelioration of impaired exercise performance.  相似文献

The influence of contraction type on the human ability to use the torque capacity of skeletal muscle during explosive efforts has not been documented. Fourteen male participants completed explosive voluntary contractions of the knee extensors in four separate conditions: concentric (CON) and eccentric (ECC); and isometric at two knee angles (101°, ISO101 and 155°, ISO155). In each condition, torque was measured at 25 ms intervals up to 150 ms from torque onset, and then normalized to the maximum voluntary torque (MVT) specific to that joint angle and angular velocity. Explosive voluntary torque after 50 ms in each condition was also expressed as a percentage of torque generated after 50 ms during a supramaximal 300 Hz electrically evoked octet in the same condition. Explosive voluntary torque normalized to MVT was more than 60 per cent larger in CON than any other condition after the initial 25 ms. The percentage of evoked torque expressed after 50 ms of the explosive voluntary contractions was also greatest in CON (ANOVA; p < 0.001), suggesting higher concentric volitional activation. This was confirmed by greater agonist electromyography normalized to M(max) (recorded during the explosive voluntary contractions) in CON. These results provide novel evidence that the ability to use the muscle's torque capacity explosively is influenced by contraction type, with concentric contractions being more conducive to explosive performance due to a more effective neural strategy.  相似文献

The effects of concentric (CON) and eccentric (ECC) contractions on Delta plasma volume (PV), heart rate (HR), and lactate in responses to protocols in different body positions were investigated. CON or ECC contractions were performed in either a single-exercise (6 sets of 12 repetitions of leg extensions completed at 80% of 12 repetition maximum [12RM] with 3-minute rest periods) or multiexercise (4 sets of 10 repetitions for both CON and ECC trials of bench press, leg extension, military press, and leg curl at 80% of 10RM with 90-second rest periods) protocols. HR and lactate increased significantly for both protocols from pre- to postexercise for CON but not ECC trials. DeltaPV was greater following both CON single-exercise (-11.48 +/- 1.38%) and multiexercise (-4.64 +/- 0.33%) trials vs. ECC single-exercise (-1.62 +/- 1.69%) and multiexercise (-1.26 +/- 1.20) trials. Data demonstrate ECC exercise in response to single and multiexercise protocols at the same absolute workload as CON exercise produces less cardiovascular stress.  相似文献

We examined the impact of early diabetes on the circulating and kidney renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in male and female mRen2.Lewis (mRen2) hypertensive rats. Diabetes (DB) was induced by streptozotocin (STZ; 65 mg/kg) at 11 wk of age for 4 wk without insulin replacement. Systolic blood pressures were not increased in DB males or females compared with controls (CON). Circulating angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) increased ninefold (P < 0.05) in DB females and threefold (P < 0.05) in DB males, but circulating ACE and ANG II were higher in the DB groups. Serum C-reactive protein was elevated in DB females but not DB males, and the vascular responses to acetylcholine and estradiol were attenuated in the DB females. Proteinuria, albuminuria, and angiotensinogen excretion increased to a similar extent in both DB females and males. Glomerular VEGF expression also increased to a similar extent in both DB groups. Renal inflammation (CD68(+)cells) increased only in DB females although males exhibited greater inflammation that was not different with DB. Cortical ACE2 did not change in DB females but was reduced (30%) in DB males. Renal neprilysin activity (>75%, P < 0.05) was markedly reduced in the DB females to that in the DB and CON males. ACE activity was significantly lower in both female (75%, P < 0.05) and male (50%; P < 0.05) DB groups, while cortical ANG II and Ang-(1-7) levels were unchanged. In conclusion, female mRen2 rats are not protected from vascular damage, renal inflammation, and kidney injury in early STZ-induced diabetes despite a marked increase in circulating ACE2 and significantly reduced ACE within the kidney.  相似文献

Platelet lipid composition, c arachidonic acid (AA) metabolism by platelets (stimulated with thrombin), serum thromboxane (Tx)B2 production and plasma lipid composition were investigated in 53 healthy females (18-45 years) and 65 males (19-45 years) with similar dietary habits. In males, serum TxB2 production and cholesterol platelet membrane levels were found significantly higher (p less than 0.001 and p less than 0.05) than in females. No differences were observed between the two groups in the AA conversion through cyclo-oxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways or in the platelet phospholipid fatty acid composition. These findings indicate that in males the platelet proaggregatory capacity is greater than in females and the higher platelet TxB2 production does not depend on a larger AA availability or on enzyme activation for its conversion. The increased TxB2 production may be, at least in part, induced by functional differences such as a different membrane cholesterol content inducing, in its turn, an increased microviscosity and/or higher number of platelet receptors for thrombin.  相似文献

The force-velocity curve (FVC) of arm flexion was established in 123 untrained males and 110 untrained females aged from 15 to 36 years, and 48 arm-trained athletes competing in different sport disciplines. The FVC was described by Hill's equation and defined by the parameters: maximal static moment (M0), maximal angular velocity (omega 0), maximal power (P0) and the concavity of the FVC (H). Within the given age range the level of the curve parameters of both untrained men and women was independent of age. On average, H was the same in all three groups. As compared to M0 of the untrained males, M0 of the athletes was 33% higher and M0 of the females was 38% lower; with regard to P0 these differences were +30% and -43% respectively. omega 0 was the same for trained and untrained males, whereas omega 0 of the women was 10% lower than omega 0 of the men.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability of eccentric (ECC) and concentric (CON) kinematic and kinetic variables thought to be critical to jump performance during bilateral vertical countermovement jump (VCMJ) and horizontal countermovement jump (HCMJ) across children of different maturity status. Forty-two athletic male and female participants between 9 and 16 years of age were divided into 3 maturity groups according to peak height velocity (PHV) offset (Post-PHV, At-PHV, and Pre-PHV) and percent of predicted adult stature. All the participants performed 3 VCMJ and HCMJ trials and the kinematics, and kinetics of these jumps were measured via a force plate over 3 testing sessions. In both jumps, vertical CON mean and peak power and jump height or distance were the most reliable measures across all groups (change in the mean [CM] = -5.4 to 6.2%; coefficient of variation [CV] = 2.1-9.4%; Intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.82-0.98), whereas vertical ECC mean power was the only ECC variable with acceptable reliability for both jumps (CM = -0.7 to 10.1%; CV = 5.2-15.6%; ICC = 0.74-0.97). A less mature state was "likely" to "very likely" to reduce the reliability of the HCMJ ECC kinetics and kinematics. These findings suggested that movement variability is associated with the ECC phase of CMJs, especially in Pre-PHV during the HCMJ. Vertical CON mean and peak power and ECC mean power were deemed reliable and appropriate to be used in children as indicators of jump and stretch-shortening cycle performance.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to determine the prevalence and risks for musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) in relation to previous athletic status and current physical activity level in former athletes. Main anthropometric data, sports history, current physical activity and MSD were estimated using a questionnaire in 219 (148 males, 71 females) former athletes (35-75 years old) and 79 controls (33 males, 46 females). According to the previous participation in top-level sports, former athletes were divided into three groups: (a) endurance, n=120 (76 males, 44 females); (b) speed-power, n=57 (43 males, 14 females); (c) team sports, n=42 (29 males, 13 females). The most prevalent MSD among the male and female ex-athletes were back and knee pain. The endurance ex-athletes group (both males and females) had significantly higher risk for the knee problems than the control group (Odds ratio--OR 5.9, 95% CI 1.7-20.00, p < 0.05). Team sports athletes (males and females) showed significantly higher risk for Achilles' tendon injuries (OR 3.19 95% CI 1.19-8.5, p < 0.05) as compared to controls. Back pain did not show any significant associations with previous physical activity and current physical activity level. Current physical activity was significantly associated with a lower risk for the knee and hip pain. Body mass index was positively associated with knee problems. In conclusion, our study results revealed that previous participation in enduranve sports events is associated with a significantly higher risk for knee problems. At the same time current regular physical exercise 6-11 times per month is associated with a lower prevalence of knee and hip problems as compared to those who exercised less than 6 times per month.  相似文献

Furosemide causes both diuretic and non-diuretic changes in renal function. We compared responses to intravenous furosemide 0.5 mg.kg-1 in 38 subjects (30 males, 8 females) aged 18 to 30 with those in 14 subjects (9 males, 5 females) aged 50 and over. There were no consistent differences attributable to gender. Older persons showed greater natriuresis (47 percent in males and 26 percent in females) but their increment in plasma renin activity was markedly reduced. The urinary excretion of thromboxane B2 was elevated in older subjects (58 +/- 10 vs. 30 +/- 4 ng/4 h, p less than 0.05 for males; 48 +/- 7 vs. 29 +/- 4 ng/4 hr, p less than 0.05 for females) while that of 6-keto prostaglandin F1 alpha was not different. While differences in the diuretic response to furosemide may be due to pharmacokinetic differences, the non-diuretic response differences may reflect age related changes in renal prostaglandin synthesis.  相似文献
