We examined aimed throwing as a means of food transfer in tufted capuchins (Cebus apella). We conducted this research in three phases. In Phase 1 we provided food to monkeys in one of two groups housed 1 m apart. We did not provide food to subjects in the second group. An observer recorded each instance in which a subject in the first group threw food toward one in the second group. In Phase 2 we provided a group of capuchins with food and noted each instance in which a subject threw food toward an empty cage. In Phase 3 we provided food simultaneously to two groups of capuchins and noted each instance of food-throwing between them. In Phase 1 subjects in one group threw food toward subjects in a second group, which, when provided the opportunity, did not throw food toward capuchins in the first group. Thrown food was either caught, retrieved, or lost on the test room floor. The rate of throwing decreased significantly when subjects were presented with an empty cage and when both groups of subjects were given food. We propose that psychological processes which underlie aimed throwing and food sharing came into existence through convergent evolution in large-brained, extractive foraging primates. We further speculate that although a well-developed system of exchange, based on contingent reciprocity, may occur among primates only inHomo, simpler transfer systems involving voluntary unidirectional passing of food from one individual to another appear to be more widespread among primates than previously thought and can be expressed in rather unusual circumstances such as those in this experiment.  相似文献

Summary Allelism tests between the standard Uq element (Uq1) and five newly activated germinal Uq elements (Uq2, Uq3, UQ4, Uq5, and Uq6) demonstrate that these new Uq elements are independent of Uq1. Gametes that either contain one Uq or various combinations of two different and phenotypically distinguishable Uq elements, have been constructed either with or without the a-ruq reporter allele. Genetic analyses of the progenies of the gametes (using the standard a-ruq tested line as the other parent) have indicated that (i) each Uq element, when present alone, has the capacity to express full activity except when a secondary transposition or loss of activity has occurred; (ii) all five new Uq elements are independent of Uq1 with respect to transposition activity; and (iii) these newly originated Uqs are clustered on one linkage group. Uq2 is allelic to Uq4, and Uq3 is allelic to Uq5, whereas Uq6 is linked to both allelic pairs. A putative linkage map of these Uq elements is presented. In reciprocal crosses there is a striking difference in phenotypic segregation of Uq; when transmitted via the male parent Uq loses full expression capacity.  相似文献

Summary The mutation him-6(e1423) leads to generalized chromosomal nondisjunction during meiosis in oogenesis and spermatogenesis of C. elegans. As a result, gametes nullisomic or disomic for each of the six chromosomes occur at appreciable frequency. Crosses utilizing marked him-6 strains were used to generate and identify exceptional euploid progeny which had received both homologues of a marked autosome either from the male parent or from the female parent. Examples of all ten possible exceptions were identified and found to be viable and fertile. These results (together with previous data for the X chromosome) indicate that major chromosomal imprinting effects do not occur during gametogenesis in this organism.  相似文献

In eastern Hokkaidô, Japan, the native crayfish Cambaroides japonicus de Haan has been declining rapidly while the exotic crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus Dana has been expanding its range. We speculated that the observed displacement of Cambaroides by Pacifastacus is partly due to an interference interaction for shelter between the two species. We studied the impacts of Pacifastacus on Cambaroides by testing experimentally whether intensity of interference, the outcome of dominance order and shelter occupancy differed between single- and mixed-species combinations of the two species. Pacifastacus showed less defensive behaviours towards Cambaroides than to conspecifics. In contrast, Cambaroides exhibited more defensive behaviours towards Pacifastacus than to conspecifics. Pairwise comparison of agonistic behaviours in mixed species groups revealed that Pacifastacus exhibiting frequently more aggressive attacks while Camaboides showing more defensive behaviours to their respective counterparts. Dominance in aggressive encounter generally dictated shelter occupancy in mixed-species and Pacifastacus pairs but not in Cambaroides pairs. Because shelter utilization, when these are not limited in supply, was much more frequent in Cambaroides than Pacifastacus, Cambaroides suffered interference from both conspecifics and heterospecifics when they competed for a single shelter. Pacifastacus, however, did not show any change in shelter occupancy in the presence or absence of conspecics or heterospecifics. Inferiority in aggressive interactions and shelter occupancy can therefore be a critical disadvantage for Cambaroides if shelters are limited in natural situations.  相似文献

The effects of two bacterial endosymbionts, designated PASS and PAR, were evaluated on the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) (Hemiptera:Aphididae), in which they occur facultatively, and on the blue alfalfa aphid, A. kondoi Shinji, in which these bacteria have not been found in natural populations. Subclones of pea aphids and blue alfalfa aphids, derived from parent aphid clones that did not contain PASS or PAR, were infected with one or both bacteria, generating PASS- and/or PAR-positive subclones with minimal genetic differences from the parent clones. Under laboratory conditions at 20 °C, PAR consistently reduced the fecundity (by between 19 and 60%) of subclones derived from three different parent pea aphid clones on bur clover, Medicago hispida Gaertn. PAR had intermediate effects on pea aphids reared on sweet pea, Lathyrus odoratus L., and had no significant effect on pea aphids on alfalfa, Medicago sativa L. The effect of PASS was either neutral or negative, depending on parent clone as well as host plant. Also at 20 °C, PASS reduced fecundity (70–77%) and longevity (40–48%), and increased the age of first reproduction (by up to 1.5 days) of blue alfalfa aphid reared on alfalfa and clover. PAR had a less dramatic effect (e.g., 30–39% reduction in fecundity) on these traits of blue alfalfa aphid. In contrast, PAR and PASS increased the fitness of pea aphid subclones of one parent clone reared for three generations at 25 °C on each of the three test plants. Without facultative bacteria, fecundity of the parent clone was reduced to a mean total of < 6 offspring per adult at this elevated temperature, but with PASS or PAR, mean total fecundity of its subclones was > 35. However, this ameliorative effect of facultative bacteria at 25 °C was not found for two other sets of parent clones and their derived subclones. Alate production in pea aphids was significantly increased in large populations of two PASS- and PAR-positive subclones relative to their parent clones. Attempts to transmit PASS or PAR horizontally, i.e., from aphid to aphid via feeding on host plants (bur clover), were unsuccessful.  相似文献

Summary Recurrent or introgressive backcrossing of Phaseolus vulgaris — P. acutifolius hybrids with either P. vulgaris or P. acutifolius increased fertility, as measured by pollen stainability and seed per pod from non-manipulated flowers, while invariably resulting in loss of traits from the non-recurrent parent. When hybrids were backcrossed with each of the parent species in alternate generations (congruity backcrossing), fertility decreased in early generations but gradually increased in later generations. By the fourth or fifth generation, congruity-backcross hybrids produced numbers of seeds per pod from non-manipulated flowers comparable to those of parent species, although the percent of stainable pollen tended to be lower. Congruity-backcross hybrids were intermediate to parent species when pedigrees contained equal representation of parents but favored the majority parent when pedigrees were unbalanced. Individuals exhibiting symptoms of developmental incongruity, such as abnormal leaflet number, foliar variagation, or unusual growth patterns, occurred in each generation. However, completely new characteristics appeared after the second backcross generation, presumably due to recombination. Backcrossing to both parent species in alternate generation reversed incongruity, allowing selection for fertility without loss of traits from one of the parent species.Scientific Journal Series Paper Number 15, 671 of the Minnesota Agricultural Experimental Station  相似文献

Behaviors associated with spawning by the halfmoon grouper, Epinephelus rivulatus, at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia, are described from in situ observations made each evening throughout most of a lunar cycle. Spawning occurred after sunset on six consecutive evenings during the full moon period. During this time males were particularly aggressive toward one another and maintained high levels of activity among the gravid females that rested within each of their territories. Spawning occurred when a male swam alongside a responsive female and the pair rose in a tight spiral 1–1.5 m into the water column before releasing gametes and returning to the seabed. Spawning activity was followed by a longer nonspawning period (ca. 20 days), when fewer intraspecific interactions were observed and gamete reserves were replenished. Histological and behavioral evidence suggests that this cycle of spawning and replenishment may occur on a monthly basis. Although individual fish, particularly females, moved into certain areas to spawn, E. rivulatus did not form spawning aggregations as do larger species of grouper.  相似文献

Beauveria bassiana has long been used as a mycopesticide. It has a wide host range; isolates have been reported to differ in host range and virulence to a given insect species. Identification of a molecular marker linked to a virulent phenotype to a target pest would be useful in screening for isolates effective against it. Twenty B. bassiana isolates were tested for their virulence to the second instar larvae of Chilo partellus Swinhoe in laboratory bioassays and their DNA fingerprints were generated by RAPD-PCR. Three arbitrary categories of aggressiveness were chosen; isolates that caused >70%, between 70 and 40% and <40% larval mortality were grouped as highly, medium and less aggressive types, respectively. In the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis a 30% variability was observed among the isolates; which clustered into three major groups. The groups based on virulence rating did not match with the RAPD clusters. One of the highly aggressive isolates clustered with less aggressive isolates in one cluster and the other grouped along with the medium aggressive isolates in a different cluster. The B. bassiana isolates were classified phenotypically based on the taxonomic order of the original insect host and the climatic zone (tropical/temperate) from which they were isolated. No correlation between the aggressiveness of the isolate and the relatedness of the original insect host to the tested insect was observed; both the highly aggressive isolates were from coleopteran insects. A correlation was found between the RAPD grouping and the phenotypic classification of the isolates. All the lepidopteran isolates grouped into one major cluster, most sub clusters were constituted by isolates from the same climatic zone.  相似文献

Adults of the parasiteApanteles sp. groupultor were held unter constant temperatures (15, 20, 26, 30°C) each within ±1°C. Total progeny production was significantly greater at 26°C, averaging 85 per female and decreased at 15°C and 30°C. Mating behavior showed that both sexes were a polygamous. The range of constant temperature did not greatly alter the progeny sex ratio when female parent had been mated. At 15°C, male activity was adversely affected when both sexes were exposed to it without previous mating, resulting in a higher number of male progeny. A temperature of 26°C was the most appropriate for normal sex ratio.   相似文献

Summary Reproduction and development of Ips calligraphus (Germar) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) occur primarily in the phloem (inner bark) tissue of its pine hosts. In slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm. var. elliottii), phloem thickness can vary widely from tree to tree. We compared adult residence time and fecundity and progeny development time, body size, and sex ratio of this beetle when reared in slash pine bolts and bark slabs with phloem thicker or thinner than average adult body width. Most studies were conducted at 20°, 25°, and 30° C. Residence time of parent males and females decreased with increasing temperature but it was not affected by phloem thickness. Residence time of parent males was about 2 days shorter than that of parent females at each temperature. Reproductive fitness was greater in thick phloem at all temperatures as measured by faster larval development, earlier emergence of progeny (F 1 ) adults, and emergence of more progeny adults per parent female. Progeny survival was similar between phloem those from thick phloem, and their sex ratio was female biased (1:2 vs 1:1, male:female). When allowed to inhabit thick phloem, the progeny (F 2) of adults from thin phloem were just as large and of similar sex ratio (1:1) as were progeny of F 1 adults from thick phloem. The high degree of plasticity in the life-history traits of this beetle may enable it to successfully colonize pines that vary widely in phloem thickness.  相似文献

Den sharing by conspecific spiny lobsters (aggregation) is modulated by chemical attraction but may confer several, not necessarily mutually exclusive, antipredator byproduct benefits: a “guide effect”, which only benefits the individual attracted to a sheltered conspecific; a “dilution effect”, which reduces per-capita risk of predation simply through aggregation; or active “group defense”. Each potential benefit has a different set of predictors (relationships between aggregation and conspecific or predator densities), but conflicting results could suggest the simultaneous operation of more than one benefit. These predictions were tested for coexisting Panulirus guttatus (a reef-obligate) and Panulirus argus (a temporary reef-dweller) using data collected during 11 surveys on fixed sites over a coral reef in Mexico. P. guttatus greatly outnumbered P. argus, but P. argus showed a greater tendency to aggregate. All three benefits of den sharing operated for the more social P. argus, with “group defense” being of the most benefit for larger individuals, and the “guide” and “dilution” effects for smaller individuals recently immigrating into the reef habitat and sharing dens with larger conspecifics. P. guttatus did not display “group defense” and its aggregations appeared to be modulated by the interplay between attraction and aggressive behaviors. This species relied more on solitary crypticity, especially at larger sizes, but appeared to benefit from a “guide effect” at high conspecific densities. In experimental tanks, each species tended to aggregate when tested separately, but when tested jointly, aggregation among P. guttatus was significantly reduced. The experimental results reflect the differential patterns of aggregation between the fore-reef, where P. guttatus dominated, and the back-reef, where coexistence of both species was greater.  相似文献

We studied the occurrence of O-type P elements in at least one species of each subgroup of the saltans group, in order to better understand the phylogenetic relationships among the elements within the saltans group and with those of species belonging to the willistoni group. We found that the O-type subfamily has a patchy distribution within the saltans group (it does not occur in D. neocordata and D. emarginata), low sequence divergence among species of the saltans group as well as in relation to species of the willistoni group, a lower rate of synonymous substitution for coding sequences compared to Adh, and phylogenetic incongruities. These findings suggest that the evolutionary history of the O-type subfamily within the saltans and willistoni groups follows the same model proposed for the canonical subfamily of P elements, i.e., events of horizontal transfer between species of the saltans and willistoni groups.  相似文献

Synopsis Modal action patterns used in maintenance behavior have often been included in animals' communication repertoires during evolution, yet for fish neither the occurrence nor subsequent ritualization of maintenance behavior has been demonstrated. We review the literature and show that one maintenance behavior, the chafe, occurs in at least 30 families of fish. The chafe thus appears to offer a fruitful tool for the phylogenetic analysis of behavior of fish. We show that chafing in Etroplus maculatus and Xiphophorus helleri functions to remove sources of irritation from their skin. We also show that during ontogeny and when in social groups the frequency of chafing does not change with age in E. maculatus and E. suratensis. Etroplus suratensis have about twice the body surface and chafe twice as often as E. maculatus. Chafe-like behavior in Etroplus is observed during ontogeny when young glance on their parents' body. Young E. maculatus without parents present chafe more frequently than young with parents present suggesting that chafing on the substrate may substitute for parent contacting. Chafing is also included in adult behavior where it occurs during pair-formation, nest relief behavior and as an interspecific signal performed by the cleaner E. maculatus upon the host E. suratensis. The maintenance chafe and glance upon the parent both occur rapidly while the chafe performed during pair-formation is slow suggesting a degree of ritualization.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the utilization of a standard treatment with diminazene aceturate against the infection caused by Trypanosoma evansi, associated to sodium selenite and vitamin E. In vitro tests showed trypanocidal effect related to the treatment with diminazene aceturate and sodium selenite, but vitamin E had no harmful effect on the trypanosomes. In vivo experiments utilized a total of 72 adult outbreed females rats, separated into 9 groups (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H and I), 8 animals each. Group A was the uninfected group; groups B to I were infected with 0.2 mL of blood containing 106 trypanosomes. Parasitemia was estimated daily by microscopic examination of blood smears. Group B served as positive control; group C was treated with diminazene aceturate; group D with sodium selenite; group E with vitamin E; group F received an association of diminazene aceturate and sodium selenite; group G received an association of diminazene aceturate and vitamin E; group H received an association of diminazene aceturate, sodium selenite and vitamin E, and group I received an association of sodium selenite and vitamin E. Diminazene aceturate was administrated in a single dose on the 3rd day post infection (PI). Sodium selenite and vitamin E were administered at the 3rd and 23rd day PI. In vivo tests showed increase of longevity in groups treated with diminazene aceturate associated with sodium selenite (groups F and H). No difference was found between groups C and E, thus the vitamin E did not increase the efficacy of treatment against T. evansi when associated to diminazene aceturate. The curative efficacy of treatments was 37.5, 87.7, 37.7 and 75% to the groups C, F, G and H, respectively. Other treatments showed no efficacy. The sodium selenite when combined with chemotherapy may represent an alternative in the treatment of trypanosomosis.  相似文献

I studied the ranging behavior of proboscis monkeys (Nasalis larvatus) at two sites in the Lower Kinabatangan Region of northern Borneo. I collected data on ranging behavior via scan sampling during group follows. Groups of Nasalis larvatus had ranges overlapping those of other groups in each area. I observed no territorial behavior. Groups of Nasalis larvatus occasionally swam across the Kinabatangan River, and frequently across its tributaries. The home range size of a focal one-male group (SU1) was 220.5 ha. The group traveled farther on days when the proportion of young leaves in the diet was higher. In addition, SU1 used particular areas when they fed on flowers and fruits. Apparently, rainfall and phenology did not influence ranging patterns.  相似文献

Many parrotfishes (Scaridae) co-occur in mixed-species aggregations as juveniles, but diverge in resource use and social structure as adults. Focal observations of three juvenile parrotfishes (Scarus coeruleus, Sparisoma aurofrenatum, and Sparisoma viride) were conducted on inshore patch reefs in the Florida Keys to determine how feeding and aggressive interactions vary with group participation. All three species spent more time in groups than alone, most often in groups of less than ten individuals. Feeding rates were significantly higher for S. viride when foraging in groups than when alone. All species fed most often from Halimeda, and overall diet composition was similar for fish whether feeding in groups or alone. The frequency of aggressive interactions varied with group participation. Focal S. aurofrenatum were more aggressive when in groups than when alone, and both S. aurofrenatum and S. viride were attacked more often by damselfishes when they were alone than when in groups. In contrast, feeding rates, diet breadth, and aggressive interactions of S. coeruleus were less affected by group participation. Small mixed-species aggregations of coral reef fishes may be large enough for individuals to assume some of the benefits of group participation while at the same time avoiding the costs of competition realized in larger groups.  相似文献

During a field study on habituated groups of wild Nilgiri langurs (Presbytis johnii),four cases of group fission were observed which differed markedly from group changes reported in other species of the same genus. All fissions occurred in groups with more than one mature male and roughly coincided with the onset of loud call vocalization by the second mature male group member. As a result of the fission the founder group factions acquired the structure of a onemale group. The filial factions consisted of both mature males and females and occupied, at least temporarily, a part of, or an area adjacent to, the founder group. During fission, the amount of aggressive interactions between the two mature males increased. However, the majority of agonistic interactions involved ritualized threat and intimidation behavior without physical aggression. In at least three cases the two mature males involved in the fission had not joined recently but had lived in these groups for three years or more. Although the presence of all male bands and single males in the two study populations indicate that male replacement by invasive takeovers may occur, it is suggested that in Nilgiri langurs, noninvasive fissions are probably another common mechanism for the foundation and maintenance of bisexual one-male groups.  相似文献

The genus Dermanyssus is currently composed of 24 hematophagous mite species and includes the Poultry Red Mite, Dermanyssus gallinae, a serious pest in poultry houses. Morphologically, Dermanyssus species fall into two groups corresponding to Moss’ gallinae-group and to hirsutus-group + Microdermanyssus. Species of the gallinae-group exhibit high levels of morphological variability, and are nearly impossible to distinguish. Species of the second group display consistent characters and host associations and are easily distinguishable. Species of the gallinae-group tend to be the major problems in poultry houses and it is unknown whether D. gallinae is the only pest, or if there are numerous cryptic species present in the system.Twenty species of Dermanyssus were tested phylogenetically based on 46 morphological characters. A subset of species, mainly of the gallinae-group, represented each by several populations, was sequenced for two mitochondrial and one nuclear gene regions. This allowed testing their specific status and their interrelationships based and on morphological and molecular characters. The molecular data was analysed separately and in combination with morphological characters. As expected, morphology did a poor job resolving relationships.Molecular data proved more informative. The resulting phylogenetic hypotheses brought some information about interrelationships among species of the gallinae-group showing a split into two main clades. The invasion of human managed environments seems to occur only in taxa within one of the two clades. The host spectrum seems to get enlarged in more derived taxa in the same clade. A delineation of six species within the gallinae-group is provided. Additionally, a key for morphological identification of these species is provided. D. gallinae appears to be the only pest in poultry houses, but is composed of several different and more or less strongly isolated lineages. A new species found from the black swift is described.  相似文献

Competition for food within the social group has been postulated as an important factor affecting primate social organization. This study examined how factors such as sex, aggression, dispersion of food, and amount of difficulty involved in obtaining food affect the distribution of food in common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) social groups. Mated pairs of adultC. jacchus were presented with food that was either dispersed or concentrated, and either difficult or easy, to obtain. The number of food pieces obtained, aggressive displays, incidents of physical aggression, and amount of time spent searching for food were recorded for each animal. Neither dispersion nor difficulty in obtaining food had significant effects on the distribution of food or any of the other behaviors examined. The primary factors affecting food distribution were aggression and amount of time spent searching. Females obtained more food than males in all situations because they were more aggressive and apparently more motivated to search for food than were males.  相似文献

This paper reports the occurrence of chromosome elimination during microsporogenesis in an interspecific hybrid between a sexual diploid accession (SEX) of Brachiaria ruziziensis (2n=2x=18) and an apomictic tetraploid accession (APO) of B. brizantha (2n=4x=36). Meiosis was very abnormal in the triploid hybrid (2n=3x=27); we observed a distinct asynchrony from metaphase I to the end of meiosis. The APO and the SEX genomes did not show the same meiotic rhythm. When the former, with nine bivalents, was in metaphase I, the nine SEX univalents were not yet aligned; when the latter reached the plate, the APO genome was already in anaphase. In subsequent stages, the APO genome had reached the poles while the SEX was undergoing sister-chromatid segregation. As the SEX genome always remained temporally behind, it gave rise to one extra-nucleus in each pole. In the second division, the behavior was the same but anaphase II did not occur for the SEX genome, and only one extra-nucleus was observed in each cell in telophase II. Chromosome elimination for the SEX genome ranged from partial to total. The importance of these findings with respect to Brachiaria breeding programmes is discussed.  相似文献
