Growth hormone (GH) significantly increased the growth in mass and length of Atlantic salmon parr. It also significantly increased routine oxygen consumption ( M O2). This change in routine M O2 could be attributed to an increase in activity, but not resting M O2. Any elevation in resting M O2 due to GH treatment is much lower than previously suggested.  相似文献

Abstract. The rate of O2 consumption was measured in five coprophilous beetle species (common in Denmark) at O2 concentrations from 1–21%. With the exception of the mainly soil-living Geotrupes spiniger (Marsham) (Geotrupidae), these beetles are probably exposed to severe hypoxia in fresh cattle pats. Aphodius fossor (Linnaeus), A. contaminatus (Herbst) (Aphodiidae) and Sphaeridium lunatum Fabricius (Hydrophilidae) maintained normal movements and a normal rate of 02 uptake (for at least 30 min) at only 1% O2. There is no evidence, therefore, that the beetles switch to anaerobic metabolism under these conditions. This ability to regulate respiration, and hence to extract 02 at very low concentrations, is exceptional even among terrestrial arthropods living in soil or other potentially hypoxic substrates. In A. rufipes (Linnaeus), respiration declined at ambient concentrations below 2% O2, and in G. spiniger the ability to regulate respiration seemed to fail at even higher concentrations. In four of the species (G. spiniger was not tested), about 11% CO2 (the level in a dung pat at 2% O2) did not affect the O2 uptake at 2% O2.  相似文献

Oxygen uptake through gills and skin has been measured in juvenile and adult Saccobranchus fossilis and its relationship represented by the equation Vo2= aWb. When air-breathing is allowed the O2 uptake via the gills and skin together increases by powers of 1 -084, 0–986 and 1–328 in juvenile, adult and juvenile+adult respectively. When air-breathing is prevented the slope (b) for O2 uptake via the gills appear to be less in juveniles (0–765) than in adults (0–784) and juveniles+adults together (0–814). Under the same experimental condition, the slope for O2 uptake via the gills+skin is also less in juveniles (0–478) than in adults (0–799) and juveniles+adults (0–755). Further decrease in the exponent value is found for the oxygen uptake of skin in relation to body weight under surfacing-prevented conditions ( b = 0–542). Different exponent values for juvenile and adult fishes may be due to their different growth pattern and physiology.  相似文献

The diel rhythms in metabolic rate ( MR ) and activity level ( AL ) were measured for single post-hatching dogfish (weight range, 2.76–10.61 g) at 15° C by the indirect calorimetric method of rate of oxygen consumption ( V O2) and by video-observation respectively, over a period of 72 b. The mean VO 2 increased from 62.0 (s.e. 2.9) mg O2 kg−1 h−1 in the daylight hours to 85.5 (s.e. 3.1) mg O2 kg−1 h−1 during the dark (light regíme, 12 h L: 12 h D). The simultaneous measurement of A L also showed mean night elevation from 0.6 (s.e. 0.2) min h−1 in the light phase to 14.5 (s.e. 1.6) min h−1 during the darkness. Bimodal nocturnal activity (BNA) was exhibited by the post-hatching dogfish within the 12 h dark period, with V O2 increasing from 71.4 (s.e. 2.8) mg O2 kg−1 h−1 before 01.00 hours to 99.5 (s.e. 4.2) mg O2 kg−1 h−1 after 01.00 hours. Similarly, A L also increased from 8.9 (s.e. I.7)min h−1 before 01.00 hours to 21.1 (s.e. 2.8) min h−1 after 01.00 hours. The importance of the results presented to the natural behavioural ecology of the hatching dogfish are discussed.  相似文献

Python egg brooding typifies parental care because it consists of multiple behaviours that provide for multiple developmental needs. For example, tightly coiling around the eggs benefits embryonic water balance, but periodic female postural adjustments improve embryonic gas exchange. Regardless of these postural adjustments, egg brooding creates a hypoxic intra-clutch environment that constrains embryonic metabolism. We further examined this novel and useful parental care model to determine: (1) any fitness-related costs of egg brooding to offspring; (2) whether any long-term costs are alleviated by postural adjustments. We artificially incubated Children's python ( Antaresia childreni ) clutches and modulated oxygen partial pressure ( P O2) to create three treatments: normoxic (NRM, 20.3 kPa O2), brooding [BRD, P O2 profile typical of clutch P O2 ( P O2clutch) in maternally brooded clutches, 15.8–19.3 kPa O2] and low (LOW, predicted P O2 profile of maternally brooded P O2clutch if females did not make postural adjustments, 14.4–18.6 kPa O2). Using various metrics from ∼12 days pre-hatching to 14 days post-hatching, we demonstrated that NRM offspring were larger, faster and stronger than BRD offspring. As only hatchling heart mass differed between BRD and LOW treatments (LOW > BRD), postural adjustments may not alleviate hypoxia-related costs to embryos. The effect of dissolved oxygen partial pressure on the accumulation of astaxanthin in the green alga Haematococcus lacustris ( Gir.) Rostaf (UTEX16) was studied in N-limited continuous chemostat cultures. The steady-state astaxanthin content measured against culture volume, cell number, and biomass dry weigh of Haematococcus cultures was proportional to the dissolved O2 partial pressure in the culture medium, over the range of 0–50% O2 The steady-state biomass dry weight concentrations remained at between 0.52 and 0.57 g. L-1 over the range of dissolved O2 partial pressure studied. Steady-state cell densities at dissolved O2 partial pressures above the air saturation level (1.13–1.58 × 105 cells.mL-1) were about half of that measured at lower dissolved O2 partial pressures (2.42–2.63 × 105 cells.mL-1). Both biflagellated zoospores and nonmotile aplanospores were found at steady state. The fraction of nonmotile cells was higher at dissolved O2 partial pressures above the air saturation level (94.44–98.01%) than at dissolved O2 partial pressure below the air level (79.64–86.12 and 91.75% ).  相似文献

SUMMARY. Oxygen consumption of P. zietziana was measured monthly in two saline (>60‰ salinity) lakes from November 1973 to November 1975 with short (<2 h) in situ incubations in BOD bottles. Tests in which oxygen decline was monitored continuously showed that there was no handling effect and respiratory rate was constant down to 1.8–1.9 mg O2 1−1, about 40% of the usual initial concentration. Incubations over 24 h demonstrated no diurnal fluctuations in oxygen consumption. Multiple regression analysis indicated that 90% of the variance in respiratory rate ( R in mg O2x10−4h−1 individual−1) was accounted for by changes in salinity (3%; S in ‰), temperature (7%; T in °C) and dry weight (8%; W in mg × 10−3): log R =−1.123+0.0025+0.021 T+ 0.756 log W. From this equation and data on population density, population respiration was calculated: 91864.5 mg O2 m−2 year−1 in Pink Lake and 12367.5 mg O2 m−2year−1 in Lake Cundare.  相似文献

Discontinuous gas exchange cycles (DGCs), active muscular ventilation, microcycles of repetitive openings, and heartbeats of diapausing adult Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), were studied at low temperatures (0, 5, and 10 °C) using an electrolytic respirometer combined with an infrared actograph. The DGC of the adult constriction-flutter-open type was the main respiration mode in fully quiescent beetles at temperatures from 5 to 10 °C. The CO2 bursts were actively ventilated at temperatures above 5 °C. During the flutter period, a series of microcycles appeared, but no muscular contractions associated with the microcycles were detected. We identified this respiration mode as discontinuous suction ventilation.
The hydration condition of the beetles did not influence the frequency of the gas exchange cycles, but dehydrated beetles showed significantly longer flutter periods and shorter ventilation periods than hydrated beetles. The heartbeat frequencies were influenced by both temperature and hydration status.
We conclude from the results that DGCs are used at rest in adult L. decemlineata under various environmental conditions and also at low temperatures. Our results showed that DGCs are the main respiration mode of resting adult Colorado potato beetle irrespective of its hydration state and temperature. Our method resolves O2 uptake and subsequent CO2 release in flutter and ventilation periods and shows that diffusion is replaced by convection to reduce water loss in adult beetles.  相似文献

Dark O2 consumption by the green alga Selenastrum minutum was sensitive to inhibition by the cytochrome pathway respiration inhibitor cyanide in the absence of an alternative oxidase inhibitor, consistent with previous work that suggested that this alga lacks alternative oxidase capacity. In contrast, addition of low concentrations of the cytochrome pathway inhibitor azide (50–750 μ M ) resulted in a stimulation of dark O2 consumption, while higher concentrations of azide (1–2 m M ) partially inhibited O2 consumption. Measurements of changes in cellular levels of pyruvate, malate and pyridine nucleotides upon cyanide addition were consistent with the absence of alternative oxidase capacity, and suggested that cyanide inhibition of O2 consumption was not due to nonspecific effects of cyanide. Addition of salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM) also resulted in an increase in the rate of O2 consumption. Both azide- and SHAM-stimulated O2 consumption were sensitive to inhibition by 50 m M ascorbate or by cyanide. However, the ubiquinone analogs chloroquine and quinacrine specifically inhibited azide-stimulated O2 consumption, with only minor effects on SHAM-stimulated O2 consumption. These results suggest that azide-stimulated O2 consumption was not mediated by the previously characterized SHAM-stimulated oxidase, and are consistent with the possibility that azide-stimulated O2 consumption is mediated by a plasma membrane redox system.  相似文献

During starch degradation in intact isolated chloroplasts from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii gas exchange was studied with a mass spectrometer. Oxygen uptake by intact chloroplasts in the dark never exceeded 1.5% of the starch degradation rate [maximum 15 nmol O2 (mg Chl)−1 h−1 consumed. 1 000 nmol glucose (mg Chl)−1h−1 degraded]. Evolution of CO2 under aerobic conditions [9.8–28 nmol (mg Chl)−1 h−1] was stimulated by addition of 0.1–0.5 m M oxaloacetate [393–425 nmol CO2 (mg Chl)−1 h−1]. Pyridoxal phosphate (5 m M ) inhibited starch degradation by more than 80%, but had no effect on O2 uptake. Starch degradation rates and CO2 evolution did not differ under acrobic and anaerobic conditions. Increasing Pi in the reaction medium from 0.5 m M to 5.0 m M stimulated starch degradation by 230 and 260% under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively. A rapid autooxidation of reduced ferredoxin was observed in a reconstituted system consisting of purified Chlamydomonas ferredoxin, purified Chlamydomonas NADP-ferredoxin oxidoreductase (EC 1.6.7.1) and NADPH. Addition of isolated thylakoids from C. reinhardtii did not affect the rate of O2 uptake. Our results clearly indicate the absence of any oxygen requirement during starch degradation in isolated chloroplasts.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption rates during embryonic and the first 38 days of larval development of the striped mullet were measured at 24° C by differential respirometry. Measurements were obtained at the blastula, gastrula and four embryonic stages, and at the yolk-sac, preflexion, flexion and post-flexion larval stages.
Oxygen uptake rates of eggs increased linearly from 0.024 μl O2 per egg h-1 (0·323 μl O2 mg-1 dry wt h-1) by blastulae to 0·177 μlO2 per egg h-1 (2·516 μlO2mg 1dry wth-1) by embryos prior to hatching. Respiration rates did not vary significantly among four salinities (20,25, 30, 35%0).
Larval oxygen consumption increased in a curvilinear manner from 0·243 μl O2 per larva h-1 shortly after hatching to 18·880 μl O2 per larva h-1 on day 38. Oxygen consumption varied in direct proportion to dry weight. Mass-specific oxygen consumption rates of preflexion, flexion, and postflexion larvae did not change with age (10·838 μl O2 mg 1dry wt h-1).
Larval oxygen consumption rates did not vary significantly among salinities 10–35%. Acute temperature increases elicited significant increases in oxygen consumption, these being relatively greater in yolk-sac larvae ( Q10 = 2·75) than in postflexion larvae ( Q10 = 1·40).  相似文献

An abundant calcareous fauna has been discovered in the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ; < 0.5 ml/l O2) off central California at oxygen concentrations considerably less than those predicted by previous ecological models. Analysis of box core samples and bottom photographs has revealed a distinct depth zonation of echinoderms. Asteroids and ophiuroids are most abundant along the upper and lower edges of the OMZ, respectively, whereas echinoids are found near the core of this zone where oxygen levels are as low as 0.3 ml/l O2. As these heart urchins are very abundant (14/m2), they represent a potentially significant component of the fossil record of OMZ's. Locally these urchins are capable of disturbing over 90% of near surface sediment. The core of the OMZ is inhabited by hermit crabs that actively transport and recycle gastropod shells. This 'biotransport' results in an accumulation of potentially preservable, non-endemic. hard-bodied organisms which may lead to misinterpretation of paleo-oxygenation conditions. We propose an alternative to the Rhoads & Morse (1971, Lethaia 4 ) biofacies model for open-ocean, dysaerobic environments which consists of: (1) a zone devoid of maeroinvertebrates. characterized by laminated sediments (<0.1 ml/l O2); (2) a zone dominated by small (1–2 mm) soft-bodied infauca which exhibits moderate disturbance of laminae due to bioturbation (0.1–0.3 ml/l O2); and (3) a zone inhabited by an abundant calcareous fauna characterized by highly bioturbated sediments (>0.3 ml/l O2).  相似文献

Abstract Two denitrifying bacteria ( Pseudomonas chlororaphis and P. aureofaciens ) and a plant (barley, Hordeum vulgare ) were used to study the effect of O2 concentration on denitrification and NO3 uptake by roots under well-defined aeration conditions. Bacterial cells in the early stationary phase were kept in a chemostat vessel with vigorous stirring and thus a uniform O2 concentration in the solution. Both Pseudomonads lacked N2O reductase and so total denitrification could be directly measured as N2O production.
Denitrification decreased to 6–13% of the anaerobic rate at 0.01% O2 saturation (0.14 μM O2) and was totally inhibited at 0.04% O2 saturation (0.56 μM O2). In this well-mixed system denitrification was 10-times more oxygen sensitive than stated in earlier reports. Uptake of nitrate by plants was measured in the same system under light. The NO3 uptake rate decreased gradually from a maximum in 21% O2-saturated medium (air saturated) to zero at 1.6% O2 saturation (22.4 μM O2). Owing to the very different non-overlapping oxygen requirements of the two processes, direct competition for nitrate between plant roots and denitrifying bacteria cannot occur.  相似文献

Rates of oxygen consumption were measured in the geothermal, hot spring fish, Oreochromis alcalicus grahami by stopped flow respirometry. At 37° C, routine oxygen consumption followed the allometric relationship: V o2=0.738 M 0.75, where V o2 is ml O2 h −1 and M is body mass (g). This represents a routine metabolic rate for a 10 g fish at 37° C of 0.415 ml O2 g−1 h −1 (16.4 μmol O2 g −1 h −1). Acutely increasing the temperature from 37 to 42° C significantly elevated the rate of O2 consumption from 0.739 to 0.970 ml O2 g −1 h −1 ( Q 10=l.72). In the field, O. a. grahami was observed to be 'gulping' air from the surface of the water especially in hot springs that exceeded 40° C. O. a. grahami may utilize aerial respiration when O2 requirements are high.  相似文献

Abstract The production of nitrogen-containing gases by denitrification in three organisms was examined using membrane inlet mass spectrometry. The effects of O2 (during both growth and maintenance) and of pH, nitrate concentration and carbon source were tested in non-proliferating cell suspensions. Two strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were capable of co-respiration of NO3 and O2 and, under controlled O2 supply, gave oscillatory denitrification. Variations in culture and assay conditions affected both the rate of denitrification and the ratio of end products (N2O:N2). Higher rates were seen following anaerobic growth. Optimum values of pH and nitrate concentration for denitrification are given. Generally, the optimum pH was 7.0–7.5, approximately that of the growth medium. Optimum nitrate concentration was generally 20 mM.  相似文献

Abstract Denitrification was measured in intact sediment cores and in homogenised slurries using membrane inlet mass spectrometry. Dissolved concentrations of O2, N2, N2O and CO2 were simultaneously monitored. Using a 0.8 mm diameter needle probe, a comparison was made of the gas profiles of intact cores obtained under different conditions, i.e. with air or argon as the headspace gas and after the addition of nitrate and/or a carbon source to the sediment surface. O2 was detectable to a depth of 1 cm under a headspace of air and the depth at which the maxima of denitrification products occurred was 1.5–2 cm. Denitrification products (N2O, N2) occurred in the surface layers where O2 was above the minimum level of detectability (> 0.25 μM): diffusion of N2 and N2O upwards from the anoxic zone, local anaerobic microenvironments or aerobic denitrification are alternative explanations for this observation. The addition of nitrate and/or acetate increased the concentrations of N2, N2O and CO2 in the sediment core. In sediment slurries, the pH, nitrate concentration, carbon source and the depth from which the sample was taken affected the rate of denitrification. Nitrogen was the sole detectable end product. Maximum denitrification occurred at pH 7.5 and at 20 mM nitrate. Denitrification was at a maximum in those slurries prepared from sections of core at 1–2 cm depth.  相似文献

Regulation of nitrate reductase (NR, EC 1.6.6.1) by oxygen concentration and light was studied in segments of oat ( Avena sativa L. cv. Suregrain) leaves, using the in vivo nitrate reductase assay. The activity of NR decreased after excision in either light or darkness; the addition of cycloheximide prevented this decrease. Treatments that increased tissue permeability (anoxia, Triton X-100) also increased NR activity. There was in general less NR activity in the light than in the dark and also less under aerobic (21–100% O2) than under anaerobic (0.3% O2) conditions. Treatments with antioxidants improved the activity in the light, but only at high O2 levels (21–100% O2).
The results suggest that NR may be regulated by inhibitory proteins synthesized in either light or darkness, by permeability changes and by light-induced oxidations that occur when O2 is present. Oxygen may control the activity by stimulating the synthesis of inhibitory proteins in the light and in the dark and by promoting oxidation of SH-groups in the light.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Strombidium purpureum Kahl, is an anaerobic oligotrichous ciliate with endosymbiotic phototrophic bacteria. Like other anaerobic ciliates, S. purpureum reacts to O2-pressure. In the light, the ciliates avoid even traces of O2 (< 1% atmospheric saturation). In the dark, however, the ciliates accumulate in water with a pO2 of 1–4% atmospheric saturation. Experiments show that ciliates which have accumulated in the dark under microaerophilic conditions react when the light is turned on, and their ability to escape is enhanced by steep O2-gradients. The ciliates orient themselves in O2-gradients by a series of phobic responses. They tumble whenever they swim towards a higher O2-tension and thus they eventually all swim in the direction of lower pO2. The ecological implications of such behaviour are discussed.  相似文献

In situ measurement of O2 in the rumen liquor of cows, sheep and goats using a membrane-covered O2 electrode revealed the presence of up to 1630 nmol/l O2; O2 became undetectable immediately after feeding of animals. The effects of O2 on H2 production and methanogenesis in samples of rumen liquor were investigated using a mass spectrometer fitted with a membrane inlet system. Methanogenesis was totally and irreversibly inhibited after short term exposure (about 10 min) to 5 KPa (0·05 atm) O2; H2 production was unaffected. Glucose additions produced rapid transient increases in H2 levels and increased O2 uptake.  相似文献

Forced submersions and natural dives are compared with regard to heart rate, blood distribution and O2 consumption. Heart rate has been used as a primary indicator of blood distribution. However, often the dive heart rate has been compared to inappropriate surface conditions, and it is suggested that it should be compared to resting apneusis in the arrhythmic breathing animal. Furthermore, natural dives are frequently short relative to the breathhold capacity of a diver, and often during these dives there is little change in heart rate or apparent kidney function from the resting state. Calculations are made to determine the breathhold limit without O2 conservation measures. Further calculations are made to estimate the expected metabolism and metabolite production during an exceptionally long dive in a seal when O2 conservation must be invoked. These results are compared to known values obtained from a Weddell seal that made a 61 min dive. Based on the results of these observations and calculations, three possible models of blood distribution during natural dives are discussed. This discussion shows the limitation of present data and the type of data needed to resolve the question of how aquatic vertebrates manage O2 stores during dives of varying durations.  相似文献
