Background

This aim of this study is to report upon traditional knowledge and use of wild medicinal plants by the Highlanders of Lukomir, Bjela?nica, Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H). The Highlanders are an indigenous community of approximately 60 transhumant pastoralist families who speak Bosnian (Bosanski) and inhabit a highly biodiverse region of Europe. This paper adds to the growing record of traditional use of wild plants within isolated communities in the Balkans.

Methods

An ethnobotanical study using consensus methodology was conducted in Lukomir in Bjela?nica’s mountains and canyons. Field work involved individual semi-structured interviews during which informants described plants, natural product remedies, and preparation methods on field trips, garden tours, while shepherding, or in settings of their choice. Plant use categories were ranked with informant consensus factor and incorporated into a phylogenetic tree. Plants cited were compared to other ethnobotanical surveys of the country.

Results

Twenty five people were interviewed, resulting in identification of 58 species (including two subspecies) from 35 families, which were cited in 307 medicinal, 40 food, and seven material use reports. Individual plant uses had an average consensus of five and a maximum consensus of 15 out of 25. There were a number of rare and endangered species used as poisons or medicine that are endemic to Flora Europaea and found in Lukomir. Ten species (including subspecies) cited in our research have not previously been reported in the systematic ethnobotanical surveys of medicinal plant use in B&H: (Elymus repens (L.) Gould, Euphorbia myrsinites L., Jovibarba hirta (L.) Opiz, Lilium bosniacum (Beck) Fritsch, Matricaria matricarioides (Less.) Porter ex Britton, Phyllitis scolopendrium (L.) Newman, Rubus saxatilis L., Silene uniflora Roth ssp. glareosa (Jord.) Chater & Walters, Silene uniflora Roth ssp. prostrata (Gaudin) Chater & Walters, Smyrnium perfoliatum L.). New uses not reported in any of the aforementioned systematic surveys were cited for a total of 28 species. Thirteen percent of medicinal plants cited are endemic: Helleborus odorus Waldst. et Kit., Gentiana lutea L., Lilium bosniacum (Beck) Fritsch, Silene uniflora Roth ssp. glareosa (Jord.) Chater & Walters., Silene uniflora Roth ssp. prostrata (Gaudin) Chater & Walters, Salvia officinalis L., Jovibarba hirta (L.) Opiz, and Satureja montana L.

Conclusions

These results report on the cohesive tradition of medicinal plant use among healers in Lukomir, Bosnia and Herzegovina. This work facilitates the community’s development by facilitating local and international conversations about their traditional medicine and sharing insight for conservation in one of Europe’s most diverse endemic floristic regions, stewarded by one of Europe’s last traditional Highland peoples.

Synthetic inhibitors of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) are commonly used in the treatment of hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. But their diverse side effects stipulated nontoxic safer and economic inhibitors which can be accomplished by using peptidyl inhibitors from natural sources or functional food ingradients. Dipeptidyl peptidases cleaved dipeptide moieties from amino terminus of oligopepides so, they may be used to generate effective dipeptidyl ACE inhibitors. In present study, role of purified DPP-I and II in generation of ACE inhibitors have been explored. Results showed that collagen alpha-1(III) from chicken showed highest ACE inhibitory potential. Both dipeptidyl peptidases hydrolysed various potent inhibitory dipeptides from their oligopeptide precursors. In addition, sequential digestion of proteins with trypsin, DPP-I and II released approximate 15 % of total inhibitory peptides. Furthermore, inhibitory peptide concentration can be increased up to 30 % or more by using more proteases in presence of DPP-I and II. Results revealed that both DPP-I and II possesses the ability to generate ACE dipeptide inhibitors from oligopeptides. Still various dipeptidyl inhibitory peptides remained in generating oligopeptides, which required study of other endopeptidases with broad specificities.  相似文献

The endangered black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) is affected by plague, caused by Yersinia pestis, both directly, as a cause of mortality, and indirectly, because of the impacts of plague on its prairie dog (Cynomys spp.) prey base. Recent developments in vaccines and vaccine delivery have raised the possibility of plague control in prairie dog populations, thereby protecting ferret populations. A large-scale experimental investigation across the western US shows that sylvatic plague vaccine delivered in oral baits can increase prairie dog survival. In northern Colorado, an examination of the efficacy of insecticides to control fleas and plague vaccine shows that timing and method of plague control is important, with different implications for long-term and large-scale management of Y. pestis delivery. In both cases, the studies show that ambitious field-work and cross-sectoral collaboration can provide potential solutions to difficult issues of wildlife management, conservation and disease ecology.  相似文献

Influential models of male reproductive strategies have often ignored the importance of mate guarding, focusing instead on trade-offs between fitness gained through care for dependants in a pair bond versus fitness from continued competition for additional mates. Here we follow suggestions that mate guarding is a distinct alternative strategy that plays a crucial role, with special relevance to the evolution of our own lineage. Human pair bonding may have evolved in concert with the evolution of our grandmothering life history, which entails a shift to male-biased sex ratios in the fertile ages. As that sex ratio becomes more male biased, payoffs for mate-guarding increase due to partner scarcity. We present an ordinary differential equation model of mutually exclusive strategies (dependant care, multiple mating, and mate guarding), calculate steady-state frequencies and perform bifurcation analysis on parameters of care and guarding efficiency. Mate guarding triumphs over alternate strategies when populations are male biased, and guarding is fully efficient. When guarding does not ensure complete certainty of paternity, and multiple maters are able to gain some paternity from guarders, multiple mating can coexist with guarding. At female-biased sex ratios, multiple mating takes over, unless the benefit of care to the number of surviving offspring produced by the mates of carers is large.  相似文献

Background

Inspiratory resistive breathing (IRB), a hallmark of obstructive airway diseases, is associated with large negative intrathoracic pressures, due to strenuous contractions of the inspiratory muscles. IRB is shown to induce lung injury in previously healthy animals. Src is a multifunctional kinase that is activated in the lung by mechanical stress. ERK1/2 kinase is a downstream target of Src. We hypothesized that Src is activated in the lung during IRB, mediates ERK1/2 activation and IRB-induced lung injury.

Methods

Anaesthetized, tracheostomized adult rats breathed spontaneously through a 2-way non-rebreathing valve. Resistance was added to the inspiratory port to provide a peak tidal inspiratory pressure of 50% of maximum (inspiratory resistive breathing). Activation of Src and ERK1/2 in the lung was estimated during IRB. Following 6 h of IRB, respiratory system mechanics were measured by the forced oscillation technique and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was performed to measure total and differential cell count and total protein levels. IL-1b and MIP-2a protein levels were measured in lung tissue samples. Wet lung weight to total body weight was measured and Evans blue dye extravasation was estimated to measure lung permeability. Lung injury was evaluated by histology. The Src inhibitor, PP-2 or the inhibitor of ERK1/2 activation, PD98059 was administrated 30 min prior to IRB.

Results

Src kinase was activated 30 min after the initiation of IRB. Src inhibition ameliorated the increase in BAL cellularity after 6 h IRB, but not the increase of IL-1β and MIP-2a in the lung. The increase in BAL total protein and lung injury score were not affected. The increase in tissue elasticity was partly inhibited. Src inhibition blocked ERK1/2 activation at 3 but not at 6 h of IRB. ERK1/2 inhibition ameliorated the increase in BAL cellularity after 6 h of IRB, blocked the increase of IL-1β and returned Evans blue extravasation and wet lung weight to control values. BAL total protein and the increase in elasticity were partially affected. ERK1/2 inhibition did not significantly change total lung injury score compared to 6 h IRB.

Conclusions

Src and ERK1/2 are activated in the lung following IRB and participate in IRB-induced lung injury.

Diatom species Aulacoseira pardata English & Potapova, new for the flora of Russia, has been found in the course of studying samples from Lake Frolikha (Transbaikal region) by scanning electron microscopy. Numerical morphological features of the species in the studied population differ from the type population, which indicates their greater variability. It is shown that A. pardata is distinguished from the similar species A. septentrionalis (Camburn & Charles) Genkal & Kulikovskiy by the shape of spines and shape and size of areolae on the valve mantle. Species A. septentrionalis, new for the lake, as well as for Cis-Baikal and Transbaikal regions, has also been recorded in Lake Frolikha.  相似文献

Life-stage-based management of marine fishes requires information on juvenile habitat preferences to ensure sustainable population demographics. This is especially important in the Arctic region given very little is known about the life histories of many native species, yet exploitation by developing commercial and artisanal fisheries is increasing as the ice extent decreases. Through scientific surveys and bycatch data from gillnet fisheries, we document captures of rarely reported juvenile Greenland sharks (Somniosus microcephalus; ≤200 cm total length [TL]) during the ice-free period in the Canadian Arctic. A total of 22 juvenile animals (42 % of total catch; n = 54), including the smallest reliably measured individual of 117 cm TL, were caught on scientific longlines and bottom trawls in Scott Inlet and Sam Ford Trough over three consecutive years. Molecular genetic nuclear markers confirmed species identity for 44 of these sharks sampled; however, two sharks including a juvenile of 150 cm TL were identified as carrying a Pacific sleeper shark (Somniosus pacificus) mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt b) haplotype. This represents the first record of a Pacific sleeper shark genetic signature in Greenland sharks in Eastern Arctic waters. Juvenile sharks caught as bycatch in gillnet fisheries were only observed offshore in Baffin Bay surrounding a fishery closure area, while larger subadult and mature Greenland sharks (>200 cm TL) were caught in all fishing locations, including areas where juveniles were observed. The repeatable occurrence of juvenile Greenland sharks in a fjord and their presence at two offshore sites indicates that these smaller animals either reside in nurseries or have defined home ranges in both coastal and offshore regions or undertake large-scale inshore–offshore movements.  相似文献

Dioscorea birmanica Prain & Burkill is a Thai medicinal plant, which is often used with other medicinal plants for the treatment of cancers, AIDS, and septicemia diseases. Large numbers of this desirable plant can be produced using the plant tissue culture techniques. The objectives of this study were to investigate techniques of in vitro propagation and to examine the bioactive compounds: diosgenin-3-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl (1 → 2)–β-d-glucopyranoside (DBS1) content, total phenolic content, and antioxidant activity of the regenerated shoots compared to those of rhizomes growing in the field. For shoot induction, the highest numbers of shoots (2.8 ± 0.5) and nodes per shoot (5.7 ± 0.8) occurred after the single-nodal explants were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 2 mg/l BA (6-benzyladenine) for 4 weeks. Shoot multiplication was achieved on MS medium supplemented with 0.01 % activated charcoal (AC) and 2 mg/l BA in combination with 0.1 mg/l IAA or 0.2 mg/l NAA. The regenerated shoots were rooted on ½ MS medium supplemented with 0.01 % AC, 2 mg/l BA and 4 mg/l NAA for 8 weeks. The survival percentage was 71.88 and small rhizomes developed after transplanting for 4–6 weeks. The quantities of 0.37 ± 0.03 % (w/w) DBS1, 44.24 ± 8.47 mg GAE/g dry extract total phenolic and DPPH radical scavenging assay with EC50 value of 53.67 ± 4.16 µg/ml were determined from the regenerated shoots, while 3.27 ± 0.04 % (w/w) DBS1, 259.67 ± 7.34 mg GAE/g dry extract total phenolic and DPPH radical scavenging assay with EC50 value of 11.42 ± 3.28 µg/ml were found in the mother rhizomes.  相似文献
