1. Emergence and inland dispersal of adult stoneflies (Plecoptera) and caddisflies (Trichoptera) from Broadstone Stream, an acidic and iron-rich stream in southern England, were studied over 10 months in 1996–1997. Fifteen pyramidal emergence traps were placed randomly in a 200-m stretch. Three Malaise traps were placed above the stream and six more on each side (one wooded, one open) along a transect at distances of 1, 15, 30, 45, 60 and 75 m from the channel. 2. More than 16 000 stoneflies, belonging to 11 species, and just under 400 caddisflies (22 species) were caught. Four dominant stoneflies (Leuctra fusca, Leuctra nigra, Leuctra hippopus and Nemurella pictetii) accounted for 96% and 95% of the catches in the emergence and Malaise traps, respectively. Two caddisflies (Plectrocnemia conspersa and Potamophylax cingulatus) accounted for 63% of the catch in the Malaise traps. Few caddisflies were taken in emergence traps. 3. The emergence periods of L. fusca, L. nigra and L. hippopus were well-defined and unimodal, whereas that of N. pictetii was prolonged and erratic. Overall, more females (1285) emerged than males (740). 4. Female stoneflies and caddisflies were in the majority in the Malaise traps above the stream. On land, significantly more females than males of L. fusca, L. nigra and P. cingulatus were caught. The sex ratio of the remaining species did not deviate significantly from 1:1. 5. The three Malaise traps placed above the stream caught most of the stoneflies though there was also dispersal away from the channel, the numbers caught declining with distance. Exponential models explained between 67% and 99% of the variation in numbers of individuals with distance from the channel in the four common stoneflies. Half the individuals went less than 11–16 m from the stream, while 90% travelled less than 51 m. Significantly more L. nigra and N. pictetii were caught in the woodland than on the open side, whereas L. hippopus showed no overall preference for either side.  相似文献

1. The stonefly Nemurella pictetii has a highly variable life cycle and is semi‐ and uni‐, but also plurivoltine in different geographical areas. 2. The influence of the type of food on growth and maturation of larvae was studied in laboratory experiments. Food preference was also assessed. 3. Larvae of N. pictetii are strongly opportunistic feeders utilising a broad range of food sources. However, biofilm was preferred over detritus (conditioned leaves), green algae and animal food. The highly mobile larvae quickly found the preferred food. Larvae fed on biofilm grew and developed significantly faster than larvae fed on conditioned leaves. 4. Larval growth and maturation in experiments as well as in the field differed with available food qualities. Phases of faster growth and maturation corresponded well with maximum availability of biofilm in the field. This contributes to the interpretations of differences in life cycles in the field.  相似文献

Lilies regenerating on scale segments may develop dormancy in vitro depending on the culture conditions. The dormancy is broken by storage for several weeks at a low temperature (5 °C). The effect of the low temperature on sprouting, time of leaf emergence and further bulb growth was studied. Dormant and non-dormant bulblets were regenerated in vitro on bulb scale segments cultured at 20 °C or 15 °C, respectively. The low temperature not only affected the number of sprouted bulblets but also the time of emergence. The longer the cold storage, the faster and more uniform leaf emergence occurred. Both dormant and non-dormant bulblets grew faster after a low temperature treatment of six weeks. Thus, during dormancy breaking the tissue is prepared not only for sprouting but also for subsequent bulb growth. These processes are rather independent as low temperature stimulates growth in non-dormant bulblets whereas these bulblets sprout also without treatment at low temperature. Moreover, the hormone gibberellin induces rapid sprouting but has no influence on further bulb growth. Good growth in bulblets exposed to the low temperature coincided with production of an increased leaf weight. However, the relationship is not absolute as bulblets that were cold-treated for six weeks grew larger than bulblets cold-treated for four weeks but the formation of leaf biomass was similar. During storage at low temperature starch was hydrolyzed in the bulb scales and sugars accumulated. This indicates that during this period, preparation for later bulb growth involves mobilization of carbohydrate reserves which play a role in leaf growth and development of the photosynthetic apparatus. Starch hydrolysis proceeded in the outer scales after planting. Approximately six weeks later, the switch from source to sink took place in the bulblet, which became visible as a deposition of starch in the middle scales.  相似文献

Pasteuria penetrans is a promising biological control agent of plant-parasitic nematodes. This study was conducted to determine effects of temperature on the bacterium''s development in Meloidogyne arenaria. Developmental stages of P. penetrans were viewed with a compound microscope and verified with scanning electron microscopy within each nematode at 100 accumulated degree-day intervals by tracking accumulated degree-days at three temperatures (21, 28, and 35 °C). Five predominant developmental stages of P. penetrans were identified with light microscopy: endospore germination, vegetative growth, differentiation, sporulation, and maturation. Mature endospores were detected at 28, 35, and >90 calendar days at 35, 28, and 21 °C, respectively. The number of accumulated degree-days required for P. penetrans to reach a specific developmental stage was different for each temperature. Differences were observed in the development of P. penetrans at 21, 28, and 35 °C based on regression values fitted for data from 100 to 600 accumulated degree-days. A linear response was observed between 100 to 600 accumulated degree-days; however, after 600 accumulated degree-days the rate of development of P. penetrans leveled off at 21 and 28 °C, whereas at 35 °C the rate decreased. Results suggest that accumulated degree-days may be useful only in predicting early-developmental stages of P. penetrans.  相似文献

Developmental times for both sexes of Aphelinus mali (Haldeman) (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) an endoparasitoid of woolly apple aphid, Eriosoma lanigerum (Hausmann) (Hemiptera: Pemphigidae) were studied at 13, 15, 18, 20, 25 and 30°C and compared with those of E. lanigerum. Mean developmental times ranged from 11.7–53.3 days for males, 11.8–55.4 days for females and 11.8–54.4 days for both sexes combined and were significantly inversely related to temperature. A good linear model fit (r2>0.99) between developmental rate and temperature in the range 13–30°C was observed. Results indicate significant differences between developmental times of males and females at 13, 18, 20, and 25°C but no differences at 15 and 30°C. The notional developmental threshold was 8.3°C for both males and females. Compared with its host, A. mali has a higher lower developmental threshold. An average of 252.8, 256.7 and 254.8 degree-days (DD) above the lower threshold were required by A. mali to complete development from time of oviposition to adult emergence for males, females and both sexes combined, respectively. Field experimentation also indicated that the developmental time of A. mali lags significantly behind that of its aphid host throughout the year. These findings are discussed in relation to its status as a biological control agent for E. lanigerum.  相似文献

We investigated the thermal ecology of three Alaskan streams. Monument Creek (MC) and Little Poker Creek (LPC) are subarctic streams in interior Alaska; LPC is in a permafrost-dominated valley. Imnavait Creek (IC) is an arctic tundra beaded stream in the northern foothills of the Brooks Range. Water temperatures were recorded with automated dataloggers hourly (LPC) or bi-hourly (MC and IC). Records for MC extend through almost three entire years, while data from IC (three years) and LPC (one year) represent the majority of the ice-free season. We also collected winter water/ice temperatures from IC (1989–1990). Mean annual water temperatures were 1.1 °C (LPC), 2.3 °C (MC), and 2.9 °C (IC), while maxima were 5.8 °C (LPC), 13.0 °C (MC), and 21.4 °C (IC). Water temperature rose in the spring about twice as fast (both mean and maximum daily increase) in MC as in LPC, and again about twice as fast in IC as in MC. A similar pattern was observed during the autumnal decline in water temperature. Maximum daily amplitude followed a similar pattern, with MC (6.6 °C) intermediate between LPC (4.1°) and IC (11.6°). LPC accumulated approximately 400 degree-days above 0 °C, MC approximately 950 degree-days, and IC approximately 1000 degree-days. Although it is about 450 km north of the other streams, the tundra stream (IC) accumulated more degree-days, had higher maximum and mean temperatures, greater daily temperature amplitude, and steeper slopes of vernal temperature rise and autumnal temperature decline than the subarctic streams (LPC and MC). The absence of a canopy of riparian plants, channel morphology, and continuous sunlight during the arctic mid-summer accounted for these higher temperatures. Beaded tundra streams provide a highly seasonal (< 120 d ice-free) and spatially and temporally complex thermal environment.  相似文献

Development, reproduction and population growth of Thrips setosus Moulton (Thysanoptera, Thripidae), reared on a leaf of kidney bean, was studied under six different constant temperatures, and the effect on reproduction of short photoperiod during immature stages was examined. Survival rates from hatch to adult were more than 67.5% at temperatures between 17.5 and 27.5 °C, but less than 55% at 30 °C. Developmental rates increased linearly as rearing temperature increased. A total of 181.1 degree-days, above a developmental zero of 12.5 °C, were required to complete development from egg to adult oviposition. These data were related to records of field temperatures in Kurashiki in western Japan, and an estimate produced that, under outdoor conditions, a maximum of between seven and 12 generations could have developed annually between 1990 and 1999. There were no significant differences in mean adult longevity and mean fecundity among three temperatures (20, 22.5 and 25 °C). The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m) was 0.1997 at 25 °C. Reproductive diapause was induced by a photoperiod less than 12 h at 20 °C.  相似文献

Plecoptera constitute a numerically and ecologically significant component in mountain streams all over the world, but little is known of their life cycles in Asia. The life cycle of Nemoura sichuanensis and its relationship to water temperature was investigated during a 4‐year study in a headwater stream (known as the Jiuchong torrent) of the Xiangxi River in Central China. Size structure histograms suggest that the life cycle was univoltine, and the relationships between the growth of Nemoura sichuanensis, physiological time, and effective accumulated water temperature were described using logistic regressions. The growth pattern was generally similar within year classes but growth rates did vary between year‐classes. Our field data suggest a critical thermal threshold for emergence in Nemoura sichuanensis, that was close to 9 °C. The total number of physiological days required for completing larval development was 250 days. The effective accumulated water temperature was 2500 degree‐days in the field. Development during the life cycle increased somewhat linearly with the physiological time and the effective accumulated water temperature, but some non‐linear relationships were best developed by logistic equations. Effects of temperature on vegetative growth on a semi-synthetic medium of 22 isolates of Metarhizium anisopliae and 14 isolates of M. flavoviride were determined. The majority of isolates of both species grew between 11 and 32°C; several isolates grew at 8 and 37 °C. None of the isolates grew at 40 °C. Relative growth rate, calculated from the maximum growth rate for each isolate, was significantly affected by temperature and isolate, with significant isolate * temperature interactions. The maximum absolute growth rates among the isolates ranged from 2.5 mm to 5.9 mm/day. Optimal temperatures were generally between 25 and 32 °C with several isolates exhibiting optimal growth at temperatures as high as 32 °C. Overall, relative growth rates were greater in isolates of M. anisopliae than M. flavoviride at temperatures of 25 °C or lower; conversely mean relative growth rates were greater in M. flavoviride than M. anisopliae at temperatures higher than 25 °C. However, the two most cold tolerant isolates at 8 °C were M. flavoviride and the three most heat tolerant at 35 °C were M. anisopliae. Since temperature growth responses varied considerably between isolates, strain selection according to thermal tolerance may be warranted when choosing a strain for development as a microbial control agent.This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Summary Drosophila melanogaster larvae were reared at various constant temperatures ranging from 12° C to 32° C and adults were transferred at the usual temperature of 25° after emergence. Daily egg production and egg hatchability were measured for the whole lifetime. The adults, of the same average genotype and kept in identical conditions, showed considerable variation in reproductive capacity. For adults grown at an optimum temperature (21° or 25°) the number of offspring produced was about 2500; this number dropped below 500 when development took place either at a lower or higher temperature. Several physiological changes explain these deleterious effects: male sterility at low or high temperature, variation in ovariole number, and in rates of oogenesis and senescence. Only the male sterility was cured by the return to 25°; all the other modifications were permanent. The significance of this epigenetic load in the life strategy of the species is discussed.  相似文献
