The annual reproductive cycle of 27 female Mauremys mutica was observed by radiography and ultrasonography from April 2006 to August 2007. Radiography was used to monitor clutch size and ultrasonography was used to monitor changes in the ovarian follicles. The follicles started to enlarge in September and became preovulatory in January. The mean maximum follicle diameter of ovulation was 18.30±1.44 mm, and ovulation occurred from March through August. Eggs were laid between April and August. Turtles entered latent period in early August and the maximum follicular size was at a low of 13.22±2.36 mm in late September. The vitellogenesis of the next reproductive cycle began in October. The 24 adult females laid 56 clutches containing a total of 227 eggs. Average clutch size was 4.05 eggs (range 1–8) and there were 2.33 clutches (range 1–4) per female. Egg shell images were first observed on the sixth or seventh day after ovulation. The oviductal period averaged 6.9 weeks (range 2–16 weeks) on the first clutch, 3.4 weeks (range 2–8 weeks) on the second, and 2.75 weeks (range 2–6 weeks) for the third. Radiography and ultrasonography are non‐invasive and convenient methods to evaluate the reproductive cycle of female M. mutica. They should be applicable to other turtles and should greatly enhance knowledge of reproductive physiology. Zoo Biol 29:50–58, 2010. © 2009 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Most marine turtle species are non-annual breeders and show variation in both the number of eggs laid per clutch and the number of clutches laid in a season. Large levels of inter-annual variation in the number of nesting females have been well documented in green turtle nesting populations and may be linked to environmental conditions. Other species of marine turtle exhibit less variation in nesting numbers. This inter-specific difference is thought to be linked to trophic status. To examine whether individual reproductive output is more variable in the herbivorous green turtle (Chelonia mydas Linneaeus 1758) than the carnivorous loggerhead (Caretta caretta Linneaeus 1758), we examined the nesting of both species in Cyprus over nine seasons. Green turtles showed slower annual growth rates (0.11 cm year−1 curved carapace length (CCL) and 0.27 cm year−1 curved carapace width (CCW)) than loggerhead turtles (0.36 cm year−1 CCL, 0.51 cm year−1 CCW). CCL was highly correlated to mean clutch size in both green (R2=0.51) and loggerhead turtles (R2=0.61) and maximal clutch size of green turtles (R2=0.58). Larger females did not lay a greater number of clutches or have a shorter remigration interval than smaller females of either species. On average, the size of green turtle clutches increased and that of loggerhead turtles decreased as the season progressed. Individual green turtles, however, produced more eggs per clutch through the season to a maximum in the third or fourth clutch. In loggerhead turtles, clutches 1-4 were very similar in size but the fifth clutch was 38% smaller than the first. No individuals of either species were recorded laying more than five clutches. Green turtles may not be able to achieve their maximum reproductive output with respect to clutch size throughout the season, whereas only loggerhead turtles laying five clutches (n=5) appear to become resource depleted. Green turtles nesting in years when large numbers of nests were recorded laid a greater number of clutches than females nesting in years with lower levels of nesting.  相似文献

In 1997, Perth Zoo acquired six pink-eared turtles (Emydura victoriae) from the wild for display in the reptile facility. There is very little documented information on pink-eared turtles in captivity. This article looks at the reproductive biology, ecology, behavior, diet, and captive husbandry of the species. Eight clutches of eggs were documented over a 2-year period with an average clutch size of 10 eggs. Egg size was recorded with three clutches incubated to hatching. Ten hatchlings were maintained for a growth and development study. Measurements of weight, carapace length, width, height, and plastron length were recorded weekly for about 12 months, and then monthly for approximately 2 years. The data were analyzed and showed positive growth curves in all animals. Sexual dimorphism was observed after 20 weeks and sexual maturity in males observed after 2 years.  相似文献

Reproductive output is one of the most relevant aspects of life history. We analyzed the reproductive output of the endangered East Pacific green turtle (Chelonia mydas) nesting in Nombre de Jesús, Costa Rica. We supplemented beach patrols with ultrasonography to estimate clutch frequency. With ultrasound scans, we classified the stage of turtle ovaries as: early stage (2 or more clutches), late stage (1 clutch), and depleted ovaries (no clutches). We calculated mean (±SD) estimated clutch frequency (ECF) to be 3.7 ± 1.8 (n = 24) and an adjusted frequency considering individual stage (ECFU; ECF + number of clutches remaining as observed in the last ultrasound) as 5.1 ± 1.3. This is greater than previously described for East Pacific green turtles. Greater individual output could be representative of a healthier population; but could also indicate a decrease in the estimate population numbers previously reported. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Here we report on the first discovery of shelled eggs inside the body cavity of a fossil turtle and on an isolated egg clutch, both referable to the Cretaceous turtle Adocus. These discoveries provide a unique opportunity to gain insight into the reproductive traits of an extinct turtle and to understand the evolution of such traits among living turtles. The gravid adult and egg clutch indicate that Adocus laid large clutches of rigid-shelled spherical eggs and established their nests near rivers, traits that are shared by its closest living relatives, the soft-shelled turtles. Adocus eggshell, however, was probably more rigid than that of living turtles, based on its great thickness and structure, features that may represent unique adaptations to intense predation or to arid nest environments. In light of the reproductive traits observed in Adocus, the distribution of reproductive traits among turtles reveals that large clutches of rigid-shelled eggs are primitive for hidden-necked turtles (cryptodirans) and that spherical eggs may have evolved independently within this group.  相似文献

Leatherback turtles have an average global hatching success rate of ~50%, lower than other marine turtle species. Embryonic death has been linked to environmental factors such as precipitation and temperature, although, there is still a lot of variability that remains to be explained. We examined how nesting season, the time of nesting each season, the relative position of each clutch laid by each female each season, maternal identity and associated factors such as reproductive experience of the female (new nester versus remigrant) and period of egg retention between clutches (interclutch interval) affected hatching success and stage of embryonic death in failed eggs of leatherback turtles nesting at Playa Grande, Costa Rica. Data were collected during five nesting seasons from 2004/05 to 2008/09. Mean hatching success was 50.4%. Nesting season significantly influenced hatching success in addition to early and late stage embryonic death. Neither clutch position nor nesting time during the season had a significant affect on hatching success or the stage of embryonic death. Some leatherback females consistently produced nests with higher hatching success rates than others. Remigrant females arrived earlier to nest, produced more clutches and had higher rates of hatching success than new nesters. Reproductive experience did not affect stage of death or the duration of the interclutch interval. The length of interclutch interval had a significant affect on the proportion of eggs that failed in each clutch and the developmental stage they died at. Intrinsic factors such as maternal identity are playing a role in affecting embryonic death in the leatherback turtle.  相似文献

Animals invest energy in reproduction that is obtained at two distinct times relative to the reproductive cycle. Energy obtained during egg production is referred to as income energy whereas stored energy acquired prior to reproduction is capital energy. Similar to most ectotherms, squamate reptiles are generally hypothesized to be capital breeders. Nearly all squamates in which income/capital energy investment has been examined thus far produce only one clutch per reproductive season. Although it is likely that squamates producing multiple seasonal clutches fuel first clutches with capital energy, either capital or income energy may be used to produce later clutches. We first monitored female eastern collared lizards over 14 reproductive seasons to confirm that the number of clutches females produce seasonally is a plastic response to variable environmental parameters, and to examine the effects of female body condition at the beginning of the reproductive season on clutch production. Clutch production varied annually and both the size and number of clutches were positively correlated with body condition. We then tested the competing predictions of the income and capital hypotheses experimentally by supplementing the diets of female collared lizards in situ for one season. Diet‐supplementation had no effect on the number of clutches produced but increased growth rates of gravid females. We further tested the competing predictions of these two hypotheses by examining variation in maternal energy investment per clutch using preserved specimens collected near our primary field site. Clutch size was highly correlated with female body size. Together, our results suggest that variation in reproductive output by female collared lizards is linked to stored capital energy rather than income energy, similar to most ectotherms.  相似文献

Measures of reproductive output in turtles are generally positively correlated with female body size. However, a full understanding of reproductive allometry in turtles requires logarithmic transformation of reproductive and body size variables prior to regression analyses. This allows for slope comparisons with expected linear or cubic relationships for linear to linear and linear to volumetric variables, respectively. We compiled scaling data using this approach from published and unpublished turtle studies (46 populations of 25 species from eight families) to quantify patterns among taxa. Our results suggest that for log–log comparisons of clutch size, egg width, egg mass, clutch mass, and pelvic aperture width to shell length, all scale hypoallometrically despite theoretical predictions of isometry. Clutch size generally scaled at ~1.7 to 2.0 (compared to an isometric expectation of 3.0), egg width at ~0.5 (compared to an expectation of 1.0), egg mass at ~1.1 to 1.3 (3.0), clutch mass at ~2.5 to 2.8 (3.0), and pelvic aperture width at 0.8–0.9 (1.0). We also found preliminary evidence that scaling may differ across years and clutches even in the same population, as well as across populations of the same species. Future investigators should aspire to collect data on all these reproductive parameters and to report log–log allometric analyses to test our preliminary conclusions regarding reproductive allometry in turtles.  相似文献

This paper presents data on aspects of the reproductive ecology of a population of Podarcis bocagei in northwestern Spain, as monitored over a two-year period (1990–1991) Data were obtained principally on the basis of mark-recapture experiments, but also from laboratory hatching studies Mating took place between the end of March and July During the laying period, from May to July, 8 5% of reproductive females produced three clutches, 52 1% two clutches, and 39 4% one clutch In general, single clutches were produced by small females Only a small proportion of large females produced three clutches Mean clutch size was 4 8 eggs (range 4–7) in May, 4 3 (2–6) in June and 3 9 (2–4) in July There was sigmficant variation in the mean snout-to-vent length (SVL) of females laying in each month of the season Both clutch size and mean single-egg volume increased with mother's SVL There was a significant partial correlation between egg volume and clutch size when both mother's SVL and month of laying were held constant There was no significant between-year variation in clutch size, breeding females' SVL, egg weight or relative clutch mass A delay in the timing of reproductive events in one year (1991) is attributable to adverse weather conditions during early spring Hatching occurred between July and September Hatch success (as estimated in 1989, 1990 and 1991 from natural nests at the study site) was high, ranging from 83% in 1991 to 91% in 1989 The mean SVL of female hatchlings was greater than that of male hatchlings By contrast, adult females had lower mean SVL than adult males  相似文献

We investigated the number of eggs laid and the total clutch volume for loggerhead turtles ( Caretta caretta L.) nesting on the Greek island of Cephalonia (38° 09' N, 20° 33' E) during 1990. Both the number of eggs laid and clutch volume were positively related to female body size, and the mean explained variation for these relationships (36·6% and 37·7%, respectively) were not significantly different. Clutch volume decreased as the season progressed because individuals laid successively smaller clutches. The inter-nesting interval (range 15–19 days) did not significantly influence the number of eggs laid or clutch volume. For individuals seen laying more than once, female size in combination with the number of a clutch in relation to all the clutches observed for that individual, together explained 65·5% of the variation in clutch volume.  相似文献

There is a poorly known rookery of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) nesting in sandy beaches of Chabahar town, northeastern Gulf of Oman, Iran. This study has been carried out to evaluate nesting activity of this small rookery in 2014 nesting season (June to October). In this study, total clutches were collected and transferred to an artificial hatchery. The peak of nesting occurred from the third parts of August to the end of September. Mean CCL was 106.3 ± 6 cm and mean CCW was 94.5 ± 5 cm. Females laid on average of 99.42 ± 47.8 eggs per clutch. The mean inter-nesting interval was 18.5 days. The observed clutch frequency was 3.4. Mean hatching success was 36.63 ± 4.1%. The incubation period was 61.07 ± 5.4 days. Nest status evaluation represented that major causes for the failure was unhatched egg with no obvious embryo followed by unhatched eggs with obvious but undeveloped embryos > unhatched eggs with developed embryos > hatched eggs but dead embryos. The results achieved in this study are a valuable contribution to cognition of the reproductive ecology of the green turtle population globally and regionally.  相似文献

Maternal investment in reproduction by oviparous non-avian reptiles is usually limited to pre-ovipositional allocations to the number and size of eggs and clutches, thus making these species good subjects for testing hypotheses of reproductive optimality models. Because leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) stand out among oviparous amniotes by having the highest clutch frequency and producing the largest mass of eggs per reproductive season, we quantified maternal investment of 146 female leatherbacks over four nesting seasons (2001–2004) and found high inter- and intra-female variation in several reproductive characteristics. Estimated clutch frequency [coefficient of variation (CV) = 31%] and clutch size (CV = 26%) varied more among females than did egg mass (CV = 9%) and hatchling mass (CV = 7%). Moreover, clutch size had an approximately threefold higher effect on clutch mass than did egg mass. These results generally support predictions of reproductive optimality models in which species that lay several, large clutches per reproductive season should exhibit low variation in egg size and instead maximize egg number (clutch frequency and/or size). The number of hatchlings emerging per nest was positively correlated with clutch size, but fraction of eggs in a clutch yielding hatchlings (emergence success) was not correlated with clutch size and varied highly among females. In addition, seasonal fecundity and seasonal hatchling production increased with the frequency and the size of clutches (in order of effect size). Our results demonstrate that female leatherbacks exhibit high phenotypic variation in reproductive traits, possibly in response to environmental variability and/or resulting from genotypic variability within the population. Furthermore, high seasonal and lifetime fecundity of leatherbacks probably reflect compensation for high and unpredictable mortality during early life history stages in this species.  相似文献

Maternal hormones can have substantial phenotypic effects in the progeny of many vertebrates. It has been proposed that mothers adaptively adjust hormone levels experienced by particular young to optimize their reproductive output. In birds, systematic variation in egg hormone levels has been related to different female reproductive strategies. Because in many bird species prospects of the offspring change seasonally and with brood number, strategic adjustment of yolk androgen levels would be expected. To test this idea, we induced pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) females to nest twice during the same season by removing their first clutches shortly after clutch completion. We collected eggs of first and replacement clutches to measure yolk concentrations of androstenedione (A4) and testosterone (T) and captured the females that laid these clutches for phenotypic measurements. Although average egg androgen levels were remarkably consistent within females, hormone patterns differed considerably between first and replacement clutches. Eggs of replacement clutches were heavier with larger yolks compared to first clutches, but they contained on average lower levels of androgens. Within clutches, androgen concentration increased over the laying sequence in the first clutch, but decreased or remained more constant over the laying sequence in the replacement clutch. Mean yolk T, but not A4 levels, were negatively associated with laying date for both breeding attempts. Moreover, females in good body condition produced eggs containing lower levels of androgens than females in poor condition. Our results are consistent with the idea that differences in yolk androgen levels may be one mechanism underlying seasonal variation in reproductive success and it is possible that changes in egg androgen patterns may reflect a change in female reproductive strategy. High within-female consistency also highlights the possibility that there may be some underlying genetic variation in yolk androgen levels.  相似文献

Mating systems are a central component in the evolution of animal life histories and in conservation genetics. The patterns of male reproductive skew and of paternal shares in batches of offspring, for example, affect genetic effective population size. A prominent characteristic of mating systems of sea turtles seem to be a considerable intra- and interspecific variability in the degree of polyandry. Because of the difficulty of observing the mating behaviour of sea turtles directly in the open sea, genetic paternity analysis is particularly useful for gaining insights into this aspect of their reproductive behaviour. We investigated patterns of multiple paternity in clutches of loggerhead sea turtles in the largest Mediterranean rookery using four highly variable microsatellite loci. Furthermore, we tested for a relationship between the number of fathers detected in clutches and body size of females. More than one father was detected in the clutches of 14 out of 15 females, with two clutches revealing the contribution of at least five males. In more than half the cases, the contributions of different fathers to a clutch did not depart from equality. The number of detected fathers significantly increased with increasing female body size. This relationship indicates that males may prefer to mate with large, and therefore productive, females. Our results suggest that polyandry is likely to increase effective population size compared to a population in which females would mate with only one male; male reproductive contributions being equal.  相似文献

The reproductive traits ofJesogammarus suwaensis Morino (1986) were estimated by field survey and rearing experiments. According to the relationship between clutch interval and water temperature, one clutch interval under 15°C corresponded to 212 degree days of the effective cumulative temperature. Thus a female could produce about three clutches during the reproductive period from November to early May in the field. Reproduction was somewhat inhibited at 20°C. The clutch size was positively correlated with female body length, and the regression coefficient was large (4.470 on log-transformed data). Oviposition was somewhat synchronized in the field, and the proportion of paired females increased as their reproductive development approached oviposition. The precopula duration was estimated to be 60–80% of the clutch interval in the field. Positive size-assortative mating was observed in precopula pairs and pairing males were usually larger than single ones.  相似文献

We measured the reproductive output of Takydromus septentrionalis collected over 5 years between 1997 and 2005 to test the hypothesis that reproductive females should allocate an optimal fraction of accessible resources in a particular clutch and to individual eggs. Females laid 1–7 clutches per breeding season, with large females producing more, as well as larger clutches, than did small females. Clutch size, clutch mass, annual fecundity, and annual reproductive output were all positively related to female size (snout–vent length). Females switched from producing more, but smaller eggs in the first clutch to fewer, but larger eggs in the subsequent clutches. The mass-specific clutch mass was greater in the first clutch than in the subsequent clutches, but it did not differ among the subsequent clutches. Post-oviposition body mass, clutch size, and egg size showed differing degrees of annual variation, but clutch mass of either the first or the second clutch remained unchanged across the sampling years. The regression line describing the size–number trade-off was higher in the subsequent clutch than in the first clutch, but neither the line for first clutch, nor the line for the second clutch varied among years. Reproduction retarded growth more markedly in small females than in large ones. Our data show that: (1) trade-offs between size and number of eggs and between reproduction and growth (and thus, future reproduction) are evident in T. septentrionalis ; (2) females allocate an optimal fraction of accessible resources in current reproduction and to individual eggs; and (3) seasonal shifts in reproductive output and egg size are determined ultimately by natural selection.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 315–324.  相似文献

The behaviour of female Necrophorus vespilloides whose clutches had been removed partially or completely was tested in laboratory experiments. If the reproductive activities can proceed without disturbances, the first larvae reach the carcass 56 h after the start of egg-laying. If no larvae come to the carcass, all females resume egg-laying within five days. The second clutch (‘replacement clutch’) is, on average, smaller than the first one. If the eggs from the replacement clutches are also removed, the females produce new clutches until no more carrion is available. One larva coming to the carcass prevents production of replacement clutches with 20 % of the females. 5 and 10 larvae prevent a higher proportion of females from producing new clutches; the reaction of the female depends on the size of the carcass offered and on the number of larvae present on the carcass. There are two behavioural options for the females with respect to time when egg-laying is resumed. Some females produce a replacement clutch while the larvae are still at the carcass; other females wait until the larvae leave the carcass. In the presence of only a few larvae at the carcass most females show both forms of behaviour under experimental conditions.  相似文献

Artificial oviposition sites were used to estimate egg deposition rates in the field. Females laid an average of 10.76 eggs/minute with a mean duration of 22.81 minutes, giving an average clutch size of 245 eggs. Since one mating corresponded to one clutch of eggs, lifetime mating success was used as a measure of the number of clutches produced. Mean lifetime clutch production was 5.91 clutches per female, equating to 1447 eggs per female per lifetime. Eggs were hatched in the laboratory at temperatures comparable with those in the field. Hatching was highly synchronised and the overall hatching success was 75.1%. Causes of egg mortality in the laboratory were limited to infertility and unhatchability. Since no other sources of egg mortality could be found at the study site, this value was a good reflection of hatching success in the field. Lifetime egg production and hatching success were used to estimate the number of viable offspring produced per female, giving a higher order estimate of reproductive success than has previously been published for a zygopteran.  相似文献
