Many anuran species are characterized by sexually dimorphic skin glands. These glands often are concentrated on specific areas, such as the mental region, flanks, or the nuptial pads. We studied the histology and histochemistry of mental and lateral glands in Hypsiboas punctatus, and compared them to skin from other body regions. We describe four types of dermal glands, two types of mucous and two types of serous glands. The mucous glands are formed by a single layered epithelium. The mucocytes surrounding a central lumen are filled with polyhedral granules. Ordinary mucous glands are small sized glands with cubical epithelium, mucoid content, and small granules. Specialized mucous glands are characterized by a larger size, a columnar epithelium, a proteinaceous content and larger granules. Both types of serous glands are syncytial and share some structural features including size, shape, and morphology of secretory granules. However, ordinary and specialized serous glands differ in their histochemical properties, size and appearance of secretory granules, and glandular outlets. The specialized type of mucous glands in H. punctatus resembles most SDSGs described in anurans, whereas the presence of specialized serous glands that are sexually dimorphic is less common. Both specialized glands occur only in mental and lateral regions of males, whereas ordinary mucous and ordinary serous glands occur in males and females. J. Summary Under conditions of food deprivation, the hindgut epithelium of the experimental animals (Mesidotea entomon, Oniscus asellus, Porcellio scaber) undergoes ultrastructural changes. After the application of different diets it was demonstrated that this part of the alimentary canal contains nutrients, though it is lined by a cuticle. Experimental evidence for the formation of glycogen from glucose offered as the only diet comes from autoradiographic experiments. Amino acids, too, were detected in the hindgut cells soon after refeeding. Lipids, on the other hand, which are first absorbed by the large cells of the midgut glands, were not found in the hindgut epithelium. The existence of lipid inclusions in the hindgut epithelium some weeks after refeeding, however, supports the hypothesis that lipids reach the epithelial cells of the hindgutvia midgut glands and hemolymph.  相似文献

Oviducal sperm storage in the viviparous (lecithotrophic) colubrid snake Seminatrix pygaea was studied by light and electron microscopy. Out of 17 adult snakes examined from May–October, sperm were found in the oviducts of only two specimens. In a preovulatory female sacrificed 14 May, sperm were found in the oviducal lumen and sperm storage tubules (SSTs) of the posterior infundibulum. In a nonvitellogenic female sacrificed 9 June, sperm were found in the lumen and glands of the posterior uterus and anterior vagina, indicating a recent mating. The glands in the posterior infundibulum and vagina were simple or compound tubular, whereas glands in the uterus always were simple tubular. The epithelium of the sperm storage glands was not modified from that lining the rest of the oviduct. The cuboidal or columnar epithelium consisted of alternating ciliated and secretory areas. The secretory product released into the lumen by a merocrine process contained mucoprotein. Lipid droplets also were numerous in the epithelium. Portions of sperm sometimes were embedded in the apical cytoplasm or in secretory material. A carrier matrix containing a mucoid substance, desquamated epithelium, lipids, membranous structures, and possibly phagocytes was found around sperm in the posterior uterus. J. The secretory cells of the oesophagogastric tract of the Eurasian toad, Bufo viridis, were examined using standard histochemical methods and lectin histochemistry. Two goblet cell types were found in the oesophageal epithelium, differing in their morphology and the histochemical features of the secretory granules. These contained mainly acidic glycoconjugates, both sulphated and carboxylated, and a small amount of pepsinogen. Type I goblet cells contained stable class-III mucosubstances, which were absent in Type II. No pluricellular oesophageal glands were found. The oesophagogastric junction had a superficial epithelium similar to that of the oesophageal epithelium, with alveolar pluricellular glands, secreting stable class-III mucins, and few oxynticopeptic cells. The gastric mucosa presented secretory cells both in the surface epithelium and in the gastric glands. Superficial and foveolar cells produced neutral mucins with Gal1,3GalNAc residues. Neck cells, oxynticopeptic cells and endocrine cells were found in the gastric glands. Neck cells produced stable class-III mucosubstances. A functional gradient was observed in the oxynticopeptic cells from the oral to the aboral fundus, with a decrease in pepsinogen secretion towards the aboral fundus and a possible increase in HCl secretion. In the pyloric mucosa, the oxynticopeptic cells disappeared and the glands produced only neutral mucins, without stable class-III mucosubstances.  相似文献

Summary Ultrastructural and ultrahistochemical studies were performed on the uterovaginal sperm host glands of the quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). The proximal parts of the glandular necks are lined by a pseudostratified epithelium, consisting of high columnar ciliated cells and small, irregular shaped, basal cells.The true glandular epithelium is composed only of columnar cells with microvilli on their luminal end. A characteristic luminal feature is a large lipid droplet in the perinuclear region. In the subplasmalemmal region numerous tubular profiles are seen which could represent a cellular resorption system.To evaluate the absorptive capacity of the Uterovaginal sperm host glands, tracer studies with HRP, ferritin, lanthanum and ruthenium red were undertaken. Since between 5 min and 3 h after injection no absorption could be found with the techniques mentioned, it is suggested that phagocytosis of spermatozoa by the glandular epithelium is not likely to occur.  相似文献

Summary A battery of 18 fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) labeled lectins was used to histochemically define the features of epithelial cells in the body, neck and the cystic duct of the human gallbladder. Surface epithelium in all three anatomic locations reacted with all lectins, either diffusely or focally, except for lectin type I from Griffonia simplicifolia and type II from Ulex europaeus. No quantitative differences were noted except for the tendency of some lectins to bind more often to the neck and cystic duct epithelium rather than the body and vice versa. In the body the surface epithelium did not differe from cells lining the crypts. On the other hand, glands of the neck and the cystic duct were essentially indistinguishable one from another but differed from the overlying surface epithelium in so far as they reacted with some lectins which were unreactive with surface epithelium and vice versa. Considerable case to case variation in the expression of lectin binding sites in each of three anatomic areas was noted. No consistent differences were noticed between gallbladders removed for cholecystitis — cholelithiasis and those removed for other incidental reasons. We conclude that all epithelial cells in the cholecysto-biliary tract are rich on glyconjugates but the pattern of expression varies depending on the anatomical location and the influence of poorly understood individual determinants.  相似文献

In eutherian mammals, the male reproductive accessory glands (RAGs) comprise the prostate, bulbourethral glands, ampullary glands, and the seminal vesicles. Their composition, anatomy and function vary widely between species. This study aimed to characterize histologically and compare the RAGs of bats. The RAGs of Noctilio albiventris (Noctilionidae) and Rhynchonycteris naso (Emballonuridae) were studied using anatomical and histological methods, and were reconstructed three dimensionally. The RAGs of N. albiventris and R. naso are composed of a compact glandular complex that surrounds the urethra and a pair of bulbourethral glands, which are extra‐abdominally located in the inguinal region. In both species, the glandular complex is composed of two well‐defined prostatic regions (ventral and dorsal). The ventral region showed an atypical epithelium (holocrine), where no obvious cellular limits were observed, and PAS‐positive secretion. The dorsal region had a pseudostratified cuboidal epithelium, with basal and secretory cells, and PAS‐negative secretion. Noctilio albiventris also had urethral glands (Littre glands) surrounding the urethra, however, R. naso had only muscles. Both species had bulbourethral glands, with simple columnar epithelium and PAS‐positive secretion. In conclusion, the RAGs of N. albiventris and R. naso comprised a pair of bulbourethral glands and an intra‐abdominal complex, composed of a prostate with two different regions (ventral and dorsal), while the ampullary glands and seminal vesicles were missing in both species. This morphology was more closely related between N. albiventris and R. naso, and to species of the family Phyllostomidae than to families Molossidae and Vespertilionidae. J. Summary To establish testosterone-dependent growth in organ-culture, anlagen of preputial glands from normal wild-type and from androgeninsensitive mouse embryos carrying the testicular feminization mutation (Tfm) were explanted and cultured in the presence of testosterone. Within six days a size difference developed between Tfm and wild-type explants involving length of hair follicle, amount of preputial gland tissue, and overall size.Anlagen from Tfm and wild-type preputial glands were then separated into epithelial bud and mesenchyme. Reciprocal recombinants were prepared and cultured with testosterone. In the recombinants development of hair follicles and gland tissue was inconsistent. Nevertheless, the effect of testosterone was expressed in the overall size of the explants. The size correlated with the type of mesenchyme used, but not with the type of epithelium: Androgen-insensitive Tfm epithelium combined with wild-type mesenchyme reached the same size as whole wild-type glands and wild-type/wild-type recombinants. Wild-type epithelium with Tfm mesenchyme resulted in small explants, which were in the range of the whole androgen-insensitive Tfm glands. Tfm/Tfm recombinants showed very poor growth, probably related to the fact that in this group no hair or gland structures developed.  相似文献

Larval development and metamorphosis of the olfactory and vomeronasal organs in the toad Rhinella (Bufo) arenarum (Hensel, 1867). — Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 92 : 305–315. The olfactory and the vomeronasal system are the two major chemosensory systems found in terrestrial vertebrates. Among tetrapods, amphibians are unique in having an aquatic larval stage, followed by metamorphosis to a terrestrial adult. In the present work, we studied the histological development of the olfactory and vomeronasal organ and associated multicellular glands of the toad Rhinella (Bufo) arenarum, from early poshatching larva to postmetamorphic toadlets. As in other bufonids, the olfactory epithelium of R. arenarum in larvae is divided into dorsal and ventral branches in the rostral and mid‐nasal regions. At metamorphic climax, the larval pattern changes drastically and the adult olfactory configuration develops. Bowman’s glands appear in the olfactory epithelium of R. arenarum at the onset of metamorphic climax. The vomeronasal epithelium develops early in larval development in R. arenarum, around the time of operculum development. Interestingly, a novel sensory epithelium develops in the floor of the principal chamber of R. arenarum at metamorphic climax. This novel sensory epithelium resembles larval sensory epithelium lacking Bowman’s glands, and suggests that these animals would be able to sense not only air‐borne, but also water‐borne odors during their adult terrestrial life.  相似文献

Summary It has been shown that there are sugars in corpora amylacea, but little attention has been focused on the expression of glycoconjugates in corpora amylacea of normal and hyperplastic prostatic glands. The present study characterizes and compares the expression of glycoconjugates in corpora amylacea of normal and hyperplastic prostatic glands of elderly men by using alcian blue (AB) stain and lectin histochemistry. Corpora amylacea were larger and more numerous in hyperplastic glands compared to normal glands. The stain with AB revealed the presence of sulfated and carboxyl components in corpora amylacea. In hyperplastic prostatic glands the sulfur and acid contents of corpora amylacea were increased. Lectin affinities of corpora amylacea from normal prostatic glands demonstrated the presence of fucose, mannose, sialic acid, N-acetyl galactosamine and N-acetyl glucosamine residues. In the hyperplastic glands the lectin binding pattern of corpora amylacea was qualitatively similar to normal glands, but an increase in GalNAc, sialic acid, mannose and fucose residues was observed. Normal prostatic glands showed a weak to moderate content of mannose residues, and in contrast a strong GNA and Con-A staining was observed in hyperplastic glands. MAA and SNA affinities indicated that the content of sialic acid residues was higher in hyperplastic glands compared with normal prostatic glands. Also NAcGal residues were increased in hyperplastic glands. Luminal secretion, secretory cells and apical border of epithelium showed a similar although more intense Lectin-binding pattern as compared with corpora amylacea both in normal and hyperplastic prostatic glands. Lectin histochemistry shows that the glycoconjugates expressed in the glandular epithelium are similar to those found in corpora amylacea both in normal and hyperplastic glands. In addition, in hyperplastic glands, where the corpora amylacea are higher in size and more numerous, the reaction to lectins is more intense especially with mannose and sialic acid residues. The results suggest that corpora amylacea are originated at least in part from prostatic secretion.  相似文献

Morphological, histochemical and cytochemical changes were examined in honeybee larvae after infection with the bacterium Bacillus larvae. The results indicate cell necrosis in the midgut epithelium accompanied by increasing cell vacuolization and nuclear pyknosis following per os inoculation with B. larvae. Many autolysosomes were positive for acid phosphatase. Non-vacuolar acid phosphatase activity was also found in lysed cell compartments. No such activity was found in regenerative epithelial cells. Degradation of haemocytes, salivary glands and other tissues was also observed. Histochemical analyses after per cutaneous inoculation with B. larvae of three- and five-day-old honeybee larvae show intense non-vacuolar acid phosphatase activity followed by disintegration of infected salivary glands, epithelial cell cytoplasm and haemocytes.  相似文献

TMEM16A/ANO1 is a calcium-activated chloride channel expressed in several types of epithelia and involved in various physiological processes, including proliferation and development. During mouse embryonic development, the expression of TMEM16A in the olfactory epithelium is dynamic. TMEM16A is expressed at the apical surface of the entire olfactory epithelium at embryonic day E12.5 while from E16.5 its expression is restricted to a region near the transition zone with the respiratory epithelium. To investigate whether TMEM16A plays a role in the development of the mouse olfactory epithelium, we obtained the first immunohistochemistry study comparing the morphological properties of the olfactory epithelium and nasal glands in TMEM16A-/- and TMEM16A+/+ littermate mice. A comparison between the expression of the olfactory marker protein and adenylyl cyclase III shows that genetic ablation of TMEM16A did not seem to affect the maturation of olfactory sensory neurons and their ciliary layer. As TMEM16A is expressed at the apical part of supporting cells and in their microvilli, we used ezrin and cytokeratin 8 as markers of microvilli and cell body of supporting cells, respectively, and found that morphology and development of supporting cells were similar in TMEM16A-/- and TMEM16A+/+ littermate mice. The average number of supporting cells, olfactory sensory neurons, horizontal and globose basal cells were not significantly different in the two types of mice. Moreover, we also observed that the morphology of Bowman’s glands, nasal septal glands and lateral nasal glands did not change in the absence of TMEM16A. Our results indicate that the development of mouse olfactory epithelium and nasal glands does not seem to be affected by the genetic ablation of TMEM16A.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to quantify the heat loss by cutaneous evaporation of goats in an equatorial semi-arid environment. The latent heat loss from the body surfaces of these ten undefined breed goats was measured using a ventilated capsule in sun and shade and in the three body regions (neck, flank and hindquarters). Skin samples from these three regions were histologically analyzed to relate the quantity of sweat glands, the area of sweat glands and the epithelium thickness of each of these regions to the heat loss by cutaneous evaporation of the examined goats. The epithelium thickness that was measured varied significantly for body regions with different quantities and areas of sweat glands (P?<?0.01). Among the body regions that were examined, the samples from the neck demonstrated the highest epithelium thickness (16.23?±?0.13 μm). However, the samples of sweat glands from the flank had the biggest area (43330.51?±?778.71 μm2) and quantity per square centimeter (390?±?9 cm?2). After the animals were exposed to sun, the flanks lost the greatest amount of heat by cutaneous evaporation (73.03?±?1.75 W?m?2) and possessed the highest surface temperatures (39.47?±?0.18 °C). The histological characteristics may have influenced the heat loss by cutaneous evaporation that was observed in the flank region after the animals were exposed to sun.  相似文献

Amazona aestiva Linnaeus, 1758 is known as the blue-fronted parrot. These animals are considered seed dispersion, contributing to ecological balance. Despite its ecological importance, A. aestiva is listed as an imminent danger of becoming extinct, as it is one of the most illegally traded native species in Brazil, besides losing its habitat due to deforestation and forest fires. The cranial oesophagus mucosa is lined with a non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium, and the basal layer presents melanocyte accumulation. No mucous glands were observed in the lamina propria/submucosa. The ingluvium two different muscular layer patterns were observed, one internal and circular and one very thick, external and longitudinal. The proventriculum submucosa consists of polygonal proventricular glands and contents into a broad central duct lined with simple columnar epithelium Periodic acid-reactive Schiff positive (PAS+) and Alcian blue positive (AB+). The 5-HT cells are dispersed in the proventricular glands located at base and apex. The ventricle mucous layer contains numerous branched folds lined by a simple columnar epithelium. The epithelium was negative reaction for PAS and positive for AB only on the fold surfaces. The 5-HT cells were scarce and observed only at the base of the ventricular gland, as well as in the adjacent connective tissue.  相似文献

The ultrastructural organization of the proboscis in Mesorhynchus terminostylis is distinctly different from that in other members of the Polycystididae in which it is currently classified. The sheath epithelium is formed by three belts, all with intra-epithelial nuclei. The apical belt of the bipartite cone epithelium has a single intrabulbar nucleus, and the basal belt possesses five insunk nucleiferous cell parts behind the bulb. Six types of glands surface through the epithelia; the three types emerging through the cone epithelium can be homologized with those described for Polycistis naegelii. Only uniciliary receptors are found in the epithelium. The musculature in the bulb has a very loose appearance, and the bulbar septum appears to be a bipartite basement membrane. The septum can be considered the basement membrane of the cone epithelium as if the contractile portion of the inner longitudinal muscles have invaded the epithelium and come to lie between the epithelial cells and the basement membrane. Thus the inner musculature of the bulb is entirely intraepithelial as is the case for Psammorhynchus tubulipenis and Cytocystis clitellatus. The systematic position of M. terminostylisremains uncertain but seems to lie between Psammorhynchus and Cytocystis on one hand and Koinocystididae and Polycystididae on the other.  相似文献

Nemertean specimens were collected from the mangrove zone in the estuary of Jiulong Jiang River. Histological studies revealed that they belong to genus Pantinonemertes but differed from the known taxa of the genus. In the present paper they are described as a new species, Pantinonemertes fujianensis sp. nov. The immature specimens, with the body rounded anteriorly and somewhat dorso-ventrally flattened in intestinal region, measured about 85–120 mm long and 1.5–2.0 mm wide. Dark pigment is concentrated along the mid-dorsal line to form a longitudinal stripe that extends for most of the body length. The head possesses a pair of horizontal longitudinal furrows, a pair of oblique lateral furrows and four eyes. A precerebral septum is absent. The proboscis is well developed and possesses 19 large proboscis nerves. The frontal organ is a well-developed tubular structure, with the epithelium regionally differentiated. Cephalic glands are extensive, consisting of faintly stained small glands that open into the frontal organ, large blocks of clear gland and orange-staining glands (stained with Mallory triple method) that open through the ducts penetrating the body wall. The excretory system consists of numerous binucleate flame cells especially in the anterior body region, each flame cell possesses 7–9 transverse cuticular support rings. Excretory tubules either open to exterior via the efferent ducts penetrating the body wall or open into the frontal organ. Lateral nerve cords are without accessory lateral nerves.  相似文献

Timema is the most basal genus of Phasmatodea and the sister group to the remaining stick and leaf-insects (Euphasmatodea). An autapomorphy of all phasmids is the paired prothoracic exocrine defence glands. In this study, the anatomy and innervation of the defence glands in Timema petita and Timema chumash are described and compared with the data on Euphasmatodea. In all phasmids, the glands consist of a cuticular epithelium, a secretory epithelium and muscular fibres that compress the lumen. In Timematodea, the muscular part of the gland is less developed than in Euphasmatodea and the ejection of the defence secretion depends on the dorsal longitudinal neck muscles. On the neuroanatomical level, Timema petita and Timema chumash lack neurons that are involved in the independent contraction of the gland in euphasmids. In both studied species of Timema, neck muscles play an active role in the gland function which is not observed in any other phasmid. Considering the basal position of this genus, this supports the hypothesis that in euphasmids, the muscular part of the gland evolved from the dorsal longitudinal neck muscles. Additionally, the same nerves that innervate the dorsal longitudinal neck muscles in all Polyneoptera also innervate the defence glands in phasmids.  相似文献

In order to find correlations between skin gland morphology and specific ethological features, the cutaneous glands of the foot pads of the primitive mammal the Madagascan tenrec, Echinops telfairi, were studied by histological and various histochemical methods as well as by electron microscopy. In the foot pads specific eccrine skin glands occurred consisting of coiled ducts and tubular secretory portions, the lumina of which were considerably wider than in primate sweat glands. The secretory tubules were composed of branched myoepithelial cells and glandular cells. The latter contained abundant mitochondria, large amounts of glycogen particles and few secretory granules as well as individual heterolysosomes and myelin bodies. The lateral cell membrane was marked by extensive interdigitations. The apical membranes of all glandular cells contained proteoglycans with sulfated and carboxylated groups containing N-acetyl-glucosamine, N-acetyl-galactosamine, galactose and mannose. The expression pattern of cytokeratins of the glandular epithelium was variable and showed similarities to that of the human eccrine glands. Tubulin, vinculin and actin were expressed in the glandular epithelium. The secretory cells showed positive reactions with antibodies against antimicrobial peptides and IgA. A positive reaction was observed with antibodies against the androgen receptor. The PCNA and TUNEL reactions indicated that the tubular skin glands of Echinops are made up of a slowly renewing tissue. We conclude that the glands fulfill several functions: production of a fluid-rich secretory product, which may prevent slipping of the foot pads on the substrate during running or climbing, secretion of antimicrobial peptides and proteins, and playing a role in thermoregulation.We thank the Fendt Foundation for financial support  相似文献

The glandular regions of the upper digestive tract in the emu were non‐pigmented (except for the tongue in most specimens) and invested by a non‐keratinised stratified squamous epithelium. The glands found in these regions were exclusively simple in nature and composed of tubular secretory units lined by Periodic Acid Schiff Stain‐positive mucus‐secreting cells. The naming of the various glandular fields was based on previously identified anatomical features and on nomenclature modified from previous studies on birds. The glands were classified into two main types, namely, simple tubular and simple branched tubular mucus‐secreting glands. Simple branched tubular glands were a feature of the regions exposed to the greatest amount of friction during feeding, whereas simple tubular glands were a feature of regions exposed to less friction. The saliva produced by the salivary glands in birds functions to moisturize and lubricate food boli. Mucins in saliva also protect mucosal surfaces from desiccation and mechanical damage, assist in maintaining cellular water balance, provide lubrication and have an antimicrobial action. This study suggests that, in addition to the role of specific gross anatomical features, the type and distribution of glandular tissue in the emu upper digestive tract supports the cranio‐inertial feeding method employed by this species.  相似文献

The copulatory organ in adult specimens of Archilopsis unipunctata has been studied by transmission electron microscopy.This copulatory organ is of the conjuncta-duplex type with eversible cirrus. The seminal vesicle, lined with a nucleate epithelium, is surrounded by spirally arranged muscles. The fibres are enclosed in a sheath that is continuous with the septum of the bulbus and the basement lamina of the male canal epithelium. Distally to the seminal vesicle the bulbus is filled with the secretory cell-necks of the prostate glands. The male canal shows three different parts: seminal duct, ejaculatory duct and eversible cirrus. At the transition of seminal duct and ejaculatory duct two prostate ducts open into the lumen. The structure of the epithelium lining the different parts of the canal is described. The transition into the cirrus may be recognized by an abrupt change in the thickness, the electron density and the stratification in the basement lamina and by the disappearance of the epithelium absent indeed in the cirrus. The material found inside the cirrus-lumen is different according to the zone considered.
