Summary The species composition of the ichthyofauna of Admiralty Bay, King George Island was determined from results of sampling using bottom trawls, gill-nets and long-lines. Thirty-five species from 24 genera and 10 families (Table 1) were found. The number of species increased with depth (e.g. 7 species at 100 m, 14 species at 255 m and 21 species at 540 m), a tendency characteristic of Antarctic waters. In the bay, the catch rate obtained with a bottom trawl (greater than 30 kg/h) was roughly ten times lower than the catch rate using the same gear on the shelf around the Island. Notothenia gibberifrons was the dominant species in all trawls. The majority of these fish (about 95%) were immature juveniles (Table 4). Younger fish were found to inhabit shallower waters (Fig. 1). The majority of the fish of species Notothenia coriiceps neglecta, Notothenia rossii marmorata, Notothenia nudifrons, Trematomus newnesi and Trematomus bernacchii preferred waters about 255 m deep. Fourteen specimens of a previously undescribed species of the genus Psilodraco (currently being described by H. DeWitt) were caught in the bay within the 146 to 540 m depth range. The rare zoarcid, Lycenchelys aratrirostris, was also caught in Admirality Bay; previously this species had only been reported from the Elephant Island region. In the case of Trematomus newnesi, the occurrence of scales in the interorbital space was noted (Fig. 2), an observation which verifies this feature as a distinct taxonomical criterion for this species.  相似文献

 The fish component of the diet of black-browed and grey-headed albatrosses at South Georgia was investigated by intercepting 155 meals from adults arriving to feed chicks during February 1986 and 1994. Fish represented 30% and 72% by mass of the diet of black-browed albatrosses and 14% and 60% by mass of the diet of grey-headed albatrosses in 1986 and 1994 respectively. We determined the identity and quantified the contribution (by numbers, size and mass) of fish species mainly by using otoliths (54 representing 9 taxa and 57 representing 17 taxa in black-browed and grey-headed albatross samples respectively). For black-browed albatrosses in 1986 the main fish prey was Patagonotothen guntheri (77% of otoliths, 51% of estimated fish biomass) and a single large specimen of Icichthys australis (40% estimated biomass), whereas in 1994 Pseudochaenichthys georgianus was the main fish prey (57% of estimated biomass) with Magnisudis prionosa (30%) and Champsocephalus gunnari (12%) also making substantial contributions. Grey-headed albatross samples from 1986 were dominated by southern lampreys (40% by number, 79% of estimated biomass), lanternfish (32% of numbers, 9% by mass) and Patagonotothen guntheri (11% by mass); in 1994 Champsocephalus gunnari (42% by numbers, 24% by mass), Magnisudis prionosa (13% by number, 36% by mass), Muraenolepis microps (90% by number), Pseudochaenichthys georgianus (15% by mass) and lanternfish (18% by number but only 1% by mass) were the main prey. The importance of Patagonotothen guntheri to both species in 1986 and its absence in 1994 probably reflect albatrosses obtaining it from the commercial fishery, which was active in 1986 but closed in 1994. Otherwise the fish diet of black-browed albatrosses is dominated by krill-feeding fish, characteristic of the waters of the South Georgia shelf. In contrast, the grey-headed albatross diet comprises deeper water mesopelagic species, especially lanternfish, which reflect its affinity for the Antarctic Polar Frontal Zone and associated oceanic upwellings. The diet and breeding performance of Grey‐headed Albatrosses Thalassarche chrysostoma and Black‐browed Albatrosses Diomedea melanophris breeding at Bird Island, South Georgia, were studied simultaneously during the chick‐rearing period between 1996 and 2000. When samples for all years were combined, cephalopods and crustaceans were the main components in the diet of Grey‐headed and Black‐browed Albatrosses, respectively. However, their diets exhibited interannual variations. Cephalopods were the most important component in the diet of Grey‐headed Albatrosses between 1996 and 1999 (60–75% by mass) but decreased significantly in 2000 (17%), when crustaceans dominated (61%). The Black‐browed Albatross diet varied greatly, with cephalopods being the most important component in 1996 (49% by mass) and 1997 (48%), fish in 1998 (32%) and 1999 (40%), and crustaceans in 2000 (63%). In 1998 and 2000 there was a significant change in the cephalopod species present in the diet of both albatross species, when their breeding success was low. The consumption of the ommastrephid Martialia hyadesi was significantly and positively correlated with Grey‐headed Albatross breeding success. For Black‐browed Albatrosses significant correlations were found between its consumption of the Icefish Champsocephalus gunnari and breeding success, and between its consumption of M. hyadesi and M. hyadesi CPUE (Catch per Unit Effort). These findings suggest that Grey‐headed Albatrosses are more reliant on Antarctic Polar Frontal Zone prey (M. hyadesi and Lamprey Geotria australis) whereas Black‐browed Albatrosses are more dependent on Antarctic prey (Icefish and Antarctic Krill Euphausia superba). The differences between diets of Grey‐headed and Black‐browed Albatrosses breeding on different islands of the Southern Ocean showed that Grey‐headed Albatrosses feed more on oceanic cephalopods (e.g. M. hyadesi) whereas Black‐browed Albatrosses feed primarily on shelf fish (e.g. Blue Whiting Micromesistius australis), suggesting that albatross diets are likely to be influenced by the geographical position of those islands, albatross foraging preference and prey availability.  相似文献

The numbers of Black-browed Albatrosses Diomedea melanophrys and Grey-headed Albatrosses D. chrysostoma at Campbell Island, New Zealand, have declined dramatically since the 1940s. Black-browed Albatross numbers went into a steep decline in the 1970s and, since at least 1984, have been increasing slightly at average rates of 1.1% and 2.1% per annum at two colonies. The long-term downward trend in numbers of the Grey-headed Albatross has continued into the 1990s, averaging annually between 3.0% and 4.8% per annum at different colonies. A demographic study carried out between 1984 and 1996 indicates that Black-browed and Grey-headed Albatrosses have similarly high annual adult survival rates (0.945 and 0.953, respectively). Black-browed Albatrosses breed for the first time at a younger average age than do Grey-headed Albatrosses (10 years and 13.5 years, respectively), have a higher average breeding success (0.663 compared with 0.397 for the latter species) and are annual breeders whereas Greyheaded Albatross show a typical biennial pattern of breeding. Both show low survival from fledging to first breeding; averaging 0.186 and 0.162 for Black-browed and Grey-headed Albatrosses, respectively. Both species are accidentally killed in the Japanese long-line fishery for tuna Thunnus sp. in the Australasian region. The steep decline of Black-browed Albatross numbers in the 1970s was concomitant with the development of this fishery in the foraging region of the Campbell Island birds. Currently, the slight increase in numbers is due to high adult survival rates and breeding success, and is coincident with a great reduction in long-line fishing. With stable and high adult survival rates, it is expected that future population trends will be mainly influenced by the recruitment rates. The continuous decline in Grey-headed Albatross numbers since the 1940s, before long-line fishing developed in this region, indicates that natural environmental processes contributed to the downward trend in breeding numbers. Modelling indicates that Grey-headed Albatross numbers will continue to decrease with the present demographic parameters. A comparison between the species breeding at different sites shows that differing environmental conditions influence demographic characteristics.  相似文献

A total of 2,851 fishes belonging to 34 species and weighing 177.15 kg were caught between July 1983 and June 1984 near Kohr al-Zubair in the northwestern Arabian Gulf, using four types of fixed gillnets with different mesh sizes. Four species (Thryssa hamiltoni, Liza macrolepis, T. mystax and Nematalosa nasus) formed 82.1% of all fish while 3 species (L. macrolepis, T. hamiltoni, Pomadasys argenteus) comprised 50.3 % of the total wet weight. The abundance of species was highest during autumn and spring, clearly reflecting the high values for the diverse indices during these periods and indicating the differing biological fish utilization of Kohr al-Zubair. The high positive correlation of temperature to number of species played an important role in this abiotic factor of fish migration to and from Kohr al-Zubair. Quantitative clustering of common fish species based on individual samples showed six distinctive groups. Group I included four resident species, while groups II-VI comprised mainly seasonal species that entered the Kohr area during either warm or cold seasons.  相似文献

Summary Investigations were performed on otoliths from Champsocephalus gunnari and Notothenia rossii marmorata as part of an effort to study the population dynamics of Antarctic fishes. Examination of otoliths by scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed internal microincrements which were similar to daily increments described for other fish species. No easily identifiable annuli could be discerned and fishes were aged by counting microincrements. Multiple regression analyses relating age to otolith morphometrics and fish size, provided a simpler ageing method. It was determined with these techniques that C. gunnari grew to 50 cm in 15 yrs and N. rossii marmorata grew to 50 cm in 6.5 yrs. The lack of larger-sized individuals for N. rossii marmorata may be indicative of recent overfishing with only the younger age groups remaining. It appears that length-at-age data determined on a yearly basis, could provide valuable scientific and management information for these species.  相似文献

The fish component in the diet of Antarctic fur seals, Arctocephalus gazella, was investigated at Laurie Island, South Orkney Islands from mid January to April 1988. Fish otoliths occurred in 78.8% of faecal droppings. Most of the otoliths extracted from scats belonged to Myctophid fish (93.4%), mainly Electrona antarctica and Gymnoscopelus nicholsi. These two fish species thus constituted the bulk of the diet. A greater percentage of the otoliths from G. nicholsi (31.1%) in this study were considered suitable for measurement in comparison with 10.3% from scats at Heard Island in 1990 and 11.4% at Macquarie Island in 1988/89. This lesser degree of erosion would suggest that foraging areas of fur seals during this study were closer to land than during previous studies. During the period studied, the commercial fishery around the South Orkneys was not based on Myctophid fish so there was no direct competition for fish between the fur seals and fisheries.  相似文献

Summary On Ile de la Possession, as on all the subantarctic islands, major compounds of organic nutrients are provided by avifauna. The presence of Wandering Albatrosses (Diomedea exulans) induces great perturbations in the environment at the site of their nest building activities: physical and chemical modifications of the soil (by removal of litter material for nest building, trampling and accumulated organic deposits) as well as microbiological, botanical and faunal changes. These perturbations are very localized in extent. The pedological changes have been described in terms of morphological modifications. The influence of Wandering Albatrosses on the vegetation and the invertebrate fauna has been assessed and shows a decrease in the number of plant species and an increase in the number of invertebrate species. The role of some of these as indicator species is discussed.  相似文献

Chaenocephalus aceratus (Family Channicthyidae) is one of the dominant species of demersal fish living on the South Georgia shelf where it is caught in low numbers as by-catch in the mackerel icefish and Antarctic krill commercial fisheries. Data collected during 14 demersal fish surveys, from 1986 to 2006, are analysed to investigate biomass, distribution, growth and diet. Biomass estimates from a swept area method ranged from 4,462 to 28,740 tonnes on the South Georgia and Shag Rock shelves although few fish were caught at Shag Rocks. Analysis of length frequency data indicated that growth was fast in the first five years with males and females attaining lengths at first spawning of 440 mm TL and 520 mm TL. The diet was comprised of fish and crustaceans, with an ontogenetic shift in diet from Euphausia superba and mysids to benthic fish and decapods observed to begin at 250 mm TL. In larger fish (>500 mm TL) the diet was dominated by fish. C. aceratus diet is sufficiently different from the other species of channichthyids around South Georgia to suggest that these species have undergone resource partitioning.  相似文献

The spawning periods, sex ratio and length at first maturity were determined for six commercially important finfish species collected from Oman's industrial trawl fishery. During 1 year of monthly sampling, biological data were collected on 5586 fish. ancova was used to compare the length–weight relationships between sexes. There were sex‐specific differences in length‐weight relationships for three of the six species examined. One serranid, Epinephelus diacanthus, and a sparid, Pagellus affinis, had sex ratios significantly different from the expected ratio of 1 : 1. Size–frequency data revealed more male fish in the larger size classes for E. diacanthus, P. affinis and Nemipterus japonicus. Data on the development of female gonads and Gonado‐somatic Index (GSI) revealed that the six species spawned at different times of the year. With the exception of female E. diacanthus, all fish had low GSI values during the onset of the summer monsoon period in June. The proportion of immature vs mature fish in the sample differed among species. For two species, Lethrinus nebulosus and Cheimerius nufar, more than 40% of the fish sampled (both sexes) were immature. Approximately 33% female and 41% male P. affinis were also immature. Management options such as temporal and area closures are discussed in light of the large number of immature fish caught by the fishery.  相似文献

Length–weight and length–length relationships were estimated for 10 freshwater, estuarine and marine fish species caught at the mouths of coastal sterams from northwestern Baja California (Mexico). The parameter b estimated by nonlinear least squares of weight and length data, ranged from 2.50 to 3.61. Stomach contents of 40 specimens of the blu0e-eyed shag Phalacrocorax atriceps bransfieldensis were sampled at Nelson Island, South Shetland Islands, in January 1994. The analysis of the diet showed that fish were by far the main component, followed by octopods, polychaetes and gammarids. Notothenia coriiceps predominated in frequency (58%) and in weight (65%), whereas Nototheniops nudifrons was the most important species by number (47%). The comparison with data published on pellet analysis of shags from the same colony gave similar results. However, although the methodology used in the present study requires more time in the field, it reduces the errors that arise from the examination of regurgitated casts, such as those due to erosion by digestion or loss of the otoliths through the gastrointestinal tract. The observation of 8 nests filmed continuously during 24 h showed that the members of the pairs alternate foraging and make 3–5 foraging trips per individual per day. The activity started as 0700 hours and finished at 2200 hours, and the mean duration of the trips was 73 min.  相似文献

Turkey’s natural and ecological situations are very suitable for aquaculture. Turkey also has a wide variety of freshwater and marine species comprising trout, carp, sea bass, sea bream, turbot, mussel, crayfish, etc. The total production of fish and shellfish was 646,310 tons in 2008. The contribution of freshwater catch to total fishery production is relatively small. Capture fisheries production amounted to 494,124 tons whilst aquaculture production was 152,186 tons in the same year. In Turkey, Engraulis encrasicholus (anchovy) is the main caught sea fish species. Fisheries in the Black Sea are the most important fishery by far and show the greatest variations in total catch. Alburnus tarichii (a local species belonging to Cyprinidae) and Cyprinus carpio (the common carp) are the most important species caught from freshwaters. Aquaculture is going to play an increasingly important role in the Turkish economy, as fishery products are the only products of animal origin that can be exported to the EU. There has been a fast increase in the aquaculture production in Turkey with the implementation of scientific and technological modernization. For example, total aquaculture production for 1986 and 2008 was 3,075 and 152,186 tons, respectively. The percentage of aquaculture in total fish production has been rising every year. The ratio of cultured fish production to total fish production was 1.5% in 1990 s, 13.57% in 2000 and more than 20% in 2005. It was 23.55% in 2008. Trouts are the main cultured freshwater fish species. Raceways and floating cages are employed in culture of trout. Carps are also important cultured freshwater fish species. Sea bass and gilthead sea bream are grown marine fish species. Floating cages, off-shore and earthen ponds are used for marine fish species culture. There has been an increase in fishery exports and imports in recent years. It was more than US500 million in 2008, but that of 2004 was just over US 500 million in 2008, but that of 2004 was just over US 233 million. However, aquaculture production is still far away from the production targets and fisheries sector is not an important part of the economy at present.  相似文献

The food and feeding ecology of Black-browed Albatrosses and Grey-headed Albatrosses was studied from 1975 to 1978 at Bird Island, South Georgia. Two hundred and seventy food samples (averaging 75–85 % by weight of the mean chick feed) were collected from adults of each species in February and March. Chicks of both species received meals of the same size, of which half consisted of liquid. The three major components of the solid diet (krill, squid and fish) were similar for both albatrosses. By weight, fish represented about 35 % of the diet of both species; squid predominated (50 %) in the diet of Grey-headed Albatross, and krill (40 %) in the diet of Black-browed Albatross. Lampreys were confined to the Grey-headed Albatross and, although squid of similar sizes were taken by both species, Black-browed Albatrosses took a much greater diversity of squid. Each major prey type was associated with a characteristic amount of liquid in the complete samples and only in the case of krill and lamprey was this lipid-rich.
As these two albatrosses are of similar size, breed over the same period and feed meals of equivalent weight to their chicks at similar intervals, the difference in the composition of the diet is possibly the most significant mechanism of ecological segregation (in the breeding season).
Evidence of the effect of krill shortage in drastically reducing Black-browed Albatross breeding success is presented to support this. The two species have largely non-overlapping winter oceanic ranges which are probably also correlated with the distribution of preferred prey.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to estimate a prey body size from the hard parts (e.g. otoliths) of a fish species frequently found in the guts of predators. Length–weight relationships between otolith size (length, height, weight and aspect ratio) and fish size (total length and weight) were determined for four fish species captured in the Arabian Sea by bottom trawl (2015 survey on‐board FORV Sagar Sampada, 200–300 m depth), off the west coast of India: Psenopsis cyanea, Pterygotrigla hemisticta, Bembrops caudimacula and Hoplostethus rubellopterus. No significant differences were noted between the size of the left and right otoliths (t test) in any of the four species. The length–weight relationship of the otolith in all four species showed a negative allometric growth pattern (t test, p < .05). The data fitted well to the regression model for otolith length (OL), otolith height (OH) and otolith weight (OW) to total length (TL) and total weight (TW). Results showed that these relationships are a helpful tool in predicting fish size from the otoliths and in calculating the biomass of these less‐studied fish species during feeding studies and palaentology.  相似文献

A total of 1,103 inshore notothenioid fish were caught by means of trammel-nets in 4 sites surrounding Cierva Point (Moss Island 1; Moss Island 2; Sterneck Island; Leopardo Island), Danco Coast, West Antarctic Peninsula, during February and March 2000. The families Nototheniidae, Channichthyidae and Bathydraconidae were represented in the samples, Notothenia coriiceps being the dominant fish of the area. Gobionotothen gibberifrons and Trematomus newnesi followed in importance. In general, the fish sampled agreed in terms of number and mass with those of the South Shetland Islands area, except for a marked higher occurrence of G. gibberifrons in the Danco Coast. This supports the hypothesis that the commercial fishery around the South Shetland Islands at the end of the 1970s was responsible for the decrease in the inshore population of G. gibberifrons in that area during the last 17 years. Information on morphometry, reproduction and diet of the fish species caught is provided.  相似文献

Comparative activity pattern during foraging of four albatross species   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The activity patterns of foraging Yellow‐nosed Diomedea chlororhynchos, Sooty Phoebetria fusca, Black‐browed D. melanophris impavida and Grey‐headed Albatross D. chrysostoma were compared using loggers recording the timing of landing and take‐offs, as well as the duration of bouts in flight or on the water, and the overall time spent in flight. The four species spent a similar proportion of their foraging time in flight (56–65%). During the day they were mostly flying (77–85% of the daylight period) whereas at night they were mainly (61–71%) sitting on the water. The amount of time spent in flight during the daytime foraging period was related to the amount of time spent sitting on the water at night. Differences between species occurred in the duration of bouts in flight and on the water as well as in the frequency of landings and in the time elapsed between successive landings. Yellow‐nosed Albatrosses were more active than the other species, with more frequent short bouts in flight and more frequent successive landings at short intervals. Sooty Albatrosses landed or took‐off less often than the other species and were more active just before dusk. Black‐browed and Grey‐headed Albatrosses were more active at night, especially the first part of the night and far from the colonies. Their trips consisted of a commuting part and a foraging part. Black‐browed Albatrosses landed more often during the foraging than the commuting part, suggesting that they were not searching when travelling. The study suggests that there is no fundamental difference between the overall activity budgets of the four species although they show distinctive diet, morphology and life history traits. The differences observed between the four species were related mainly to differences in foraging technique. Comparison with the Wandering Albatross, the only species for which data were available previously, suggest that this larger species might differ completely in foraging technique from the smaller albatrosses.  相似文献

Morphological changes in otolith shape with age, of young (<age 3) red snapper were examined through shape analysis and tested as an objective method for age determination. Otoliths from two collections of juvenile fish (hatchery and wild) were used in the study. First, shape analysis was applied to a series of known-age otoliths from hatchery-reared age 0, 1 and 2 fish. Multidimensional scaling and non-parametric analysis of similarities showed significant shape differences among the three age classes of fish. Discriminant function analysis and cross-validation classification showed 65.6% correct age classification based on shape variables alone, and 86.7% correct age classification with inclusion of otolith weight in the discriminant function (n?=?90). Subsequently, the method was applied to otoliths from a series of age 0, 1 and 2 wild caught red snapper. Otoliths from wild fish showed a similar age classification success rate of 68.9% based on shape variables alone and 86.7% correct age classification with the inclusion of otolith weight in the discriminant function (n?=?90). Ageing of juvenile red snapper through otolith increment counts has been difficult in past studies and this study provides an alternative, objective method of otolith shape analysis for ageing young fish of this species.  相似文献

Summary Approximately 1000 specimens belonging to eight fish species were collected at Potter Cove, King George Island, South Shetland Islands, from August 1985 to May 1986. This study deals with the dominant species Notothenia neglecta, Notothenia gibberifrons, Trematomus newnesi and Notothenia rossii marmorata. Age and size structure of the fish were analyzed using scale and otolith readings. Notothenia neglecta was the most abundant species. It spawns in the austral autumn. Juvenile N. rossii marmorata migrate offshore when sexually mature. Over eight hundred stomach contents were analyzed. The four species studied were generally benthophagous. However, in summer T. newnesi and N. rossii marmorata, carried out vertical migrations, feeding on pelagic organisms. Gammarid amphipods constituted the main food in all four species. Algae were consumed regularly throughout the year and we suggest that they are intentially eaten by the fish, rather than by accident. Two 48 hour sampling periods, carried out in summer of 1987, showed that N. neglecta was more active during the day.  相似文献
