A new species of marine planarian, Obrimoposthia aparala sp. nov. , is described from the Crozet Islands and two other species are newly recorded for these islands, viz. 0. wandeli and Synsiphonium ernesti. The only known freshwater triclad from the Crozets, Dugesia seclusa , is redescribed from the type material. The morphology, ecology, and distribution of these four species is discussed.  相似文献

A phylogenetic analysis was performed on the genera and subgenera within the freshwater triclad family Dugesiidae, based on 19 terminal taxa and 17 morphological characters. The phylogenetic tree proposed has length of 27 steps and consistency index of 0.66. This phylogenetic hypothesis implies that the current genus Dugesia is paraphyletic and that its subgenera Girardia, Schmidiea and Dugesia S.S. should be elevated to the rank of genus. The genera Cura, Spathula and Neppia are presumed monophyletic by default because the database was unable to provide autapomorphies for any of these genera. The genera Dugesia S.S. and Neppia share sistergroup relationship. Several characters are discussed which were previously considered to be of phylogenetic importance but were not included in the present analysis. It is emphasized that sensory organs form potentially useful set of phylogenetic characters for the Dugesiidae.  相似文献

A new species of freshwater triclad, Romankenkius libidinosus sp. nov. , is described from New South Wales, Australia. The species is characterized by a large adenodactyl and unique genito-intestinal connections, and represents the first record of the genus Romankenkius outside Tasmania. The taxonomic and phylogenetic implications of several morphological features of the new species are discussed in the light of a previous phylogenetic study.  相似文献

Chromosome bands in freshwater triclads   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Four species of Triclads belonging to three families, Dugesia polychroa and Dugesia mediterranea (Dugesiidae), Planaria torva (Planariidae) and Dendrocoelum lacteum (Dendrocoelidae) were studied for chromosome banding: C-banding for all the species, ASG banding for Dugesia polychroa and G-banding for Dugesia polychroa and Dugesia mediterranea. C-banding results for Dugesia lugubris-polychroa group suggest a high level of heterochromatin evolution in the group. Small bands strictly limited to the centromeric region were seen in Dugusia lugubris and this pattern is similar to the patterns of some species belonging to other families, notably Planaria torva and Dendrocoelum lacteum. This could be considered a primitive character. In contrast numerous heterochromatin bands which are useful to characterize the different karyotypes were seen in Dugesia polychroa and Dugesia mediterranea. Our data suggest that heterochromatin is important in freshwater triclad speciation.  相似文献

Giemsa and quinacrine banding was routinely produced in metaphase spreads of the freshwater triclad Dugesia polychroa. The techniques reported here may help eliminate the problems in chromosome banding which have prevented the application of differential chromosome banding in karyological studies of this taxon. More detailed karyological and phylogenetic comparisons with other species now seems possible.  相似文献

The new species Dugesia notogaea Sluys & Kawakatsu, sp. n. is described from Queensland, Australia, representing the first record of the genus Dugesia for that continent. A phylogenetic analysis of the 68 species of Dugesia resulted in the discovery of a new apomorphy for the genus, and a cladogram showing two major phyletic groups. The distributional range of one group has a western accent, whereas that of the other group has an eastern emphasis; the ranges of these two groups overlap in Africa and the Mediterranean region. We attempt to determine the ancestral area for both the Dugesiidae and Dugesia. A scenario for the historical biogeography of the genus Dugesia is discussed. In this scenario it is presumed that the geological history of the Australasian region enabled Dugesia's from southeast Asia to colonize northern Australia. © 1998 The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters  相似文献

Paranoplocephala etholeni n. sp., parasitizing the meadow vole Microtus pennsylvanicus in Alaska and Wisconsin, USA, is described. Paranoplocephala etholeni is morphologically most closely related to the Nearctic Paranoplocephala ondatrae (Rausch, 1948). Available data suggest that P. etholeni is a host-specific, locally rare species that may have a wide but sporadic geographical distribution in North America. The finding of P. ondatrae-like cestodes in Microtus spp. suggests that this poorly known species may actually be a parasite of voles rather than muskrat (type host). A tabular synopsis of all the known species of Paranoplocephala s. l. in the Holarctic region with their main morphological features is presented.  相似文献

1. A survey of lakes in Anglesey and Snowdonia, Wales, in the summer of 1997 recorded changes in the triclad fauna which had occurred since earlier studies in the 1950s and in 1973. Two native species, Polycelis tenuis and Dugesia polychroa, and two immigrants, Planaria torva and especially Dugesia tigrina, have increased their range. The triclad fauna has remained unchanged with time in eleven out of sixteen lakes in Snowdonia, in contrast to only one out of fourteen lakes on Anglesey. This supports the hypothesis produced in the 1950s, that the triclad fauna of the ion-poor, unproductive lakes in Snowdonia would change little with time, being maintained by ecological interactions, whereas the ion-rich, productive lakes on Anglesey, from which native Dugesia spp. and Dendrocoelum lacteum are historically absent, would increase in triclad diversity. 2. An examination of national records for the distribution of D. tigrina and Pl. torva indicated their continuing dispersal in both still and running waters in mainland Britain, with the former species having the greater frequency of occurrence. 3. The reasons for this may be that D. tigrina is (a) more easily dispersed, (b) a more opportunistic, catholic feeder, (c) a more vigorous competitor, (d) able to reproduce asexually and (e) able to prey to some extent on other triclad species, as shown in the laboratory but not yet confirmed in the field. The absence of D. tigrina and Pl. torva from unproductive lakes may be explained in terms of low temperature and feeding mode, and a low standing crop of gastropods, respectively. 4. Seven surveys (1961–1997) of the triclad fauna (six species) of Colemere, England, revealed that D. tigrina was confined to one small area of the littoral zone until the mid-1980s, after which it spread fairly rapidly to occupy the entire shore by 1997. Its expansion has been to the detriment of all the native species, particularly P. tenuis, except Dd. lacteum. The possible extinction of Pl. torva may be linked to a numerical reduction in snails, particularly Potamopyrgus jenkinsi. 5. Dugesia tigrina has an adverse effect on the native triclad fauna in lakes, particularly when only a few species are present. This has been explained in terms of the availability of a wider variety of food. The presence of a larger number of triclad species denies the immigrant food items, particularly crustaceans and snails, the food refuges of Dd. lacteum and Dugesia spp., respectively. However, the long-term study of Colemere has shown that more diverse triclad faunas may also be vulnerable to this immigrant. The effect of Pl. torva on native triclads remains uncertain.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Two new species of Microsporidea, Plistophora salmonae from steelhead and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdntri) and Plistophora crpedianar from gizzard shad ( Dorosoma cepedianum) are described. Schizonts to spores of P. cepedianae were found at one time within the same cyst, while only sporonts and spores of P. salmonae were found within the cyst.
An illustrated synopsis of the known Microsporidea of freshwater and euryhaline fishes is given.  相似文献

Abstract:  A new species of the genus Epiphaxum (family Lithotelestidae) is described and illustrated in detail, and compared to other species. Epiphaxum arbuscula sp. nov. has been collected from Upper Eocene (Priabonian), Upper Oligocene (Chattian) and Lower Miocene (Upper Burdigalian) deposits of the Aquitaine Basin, south-west France. Epiphaxum is a poorly documented genus but its fossil record extends back to the Late Cretaceous; it was previously known only from the Paleocene (Danian). Epiphaxum arbuscula differs from all others species of the genus in the form of its colony. In contrast to the creeping colonies of previously known species, it has branched colonies. It is very common at one Upper Oligocene outcrop from which an assemblage with submarine cave remains has been described. A close relationship between the three extant species (two from the Caribbean Sea and one from the Indo-West Pacific region) and the Paleogene species is also noted. These constitute a group that has not undergone any important morphological changes for the last 65 million years.  相似文献

Summary

This paper compares aspects of the reproduction of a semelparous triclad, Dendrocoelum lacteum, with those of an iteroparous triclad, Dugesia polychroa. Cocoon output was less sensitive to ration and possibly temperature for the former as compared with the latter species. Cocoons of D. lacteum were on average bigger and contained more hatchlings than those of D. polychroa. The sizes of hatchlings did not differ between species, but for D. lacteum only, the hatchlings emerging from late cocoons were significantly larger, and less numerous, than those emerging from earlier cocoons. Possible reasons for these differences are considered.  相似文献

Two new species of Dalyellidae, Dalyellia callvucurai n. sp. and Gieysztoria namuncurai n. sp., are described from temporary freshwater environments in central Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The ultrastructure of the stylets of both species is also described. The new species of the genus Dalyellia is the second species of the genus found in the neotropics and the first whose stylet has been studied with scanning electron microscopy. Gieysztoria namuncurai n. sp. joins the seven species of the genus known in Argentina. The ultrastructural characteristics of the stylet place it in the Inaequales group, with complex stylets.  相似文献

Dugesia (Girardia) tigrina is a Nearctic freshwater triclad native to North America, now amply distributed in most European countries as the result of a reportedly unique introduction into north-west Europe early this century and its dispersal southwards and eastwards in the last decades. All European populations described so far are externally spotted, with a pigmented pharynx, and, apart from two sexual populations recently described in England, they are fissiparous. This uniformity contrasts with the variability reported in its native area, thus supporting the hypothesis of a single introduction. However, thorough morphological, karyological and biochemical comparative studies of European populations have never been properly done.
We have undertaken such a study comparing 24 populations present in a restricted area of the western Mediterranean. The results show an unexpectedly ample variation in external and pharyngeal pigmentation patterns, the presence of sexually reproducing populations, and ample variation in their biochemical patterns as revealed by isoelectric-focusing. This is an indication that European Dugesia (G.) tigrina is far more diverse than previously thought, suggesting that several, independent introductions from its native area have recently occurred, and the implications of these findings in biogeographical and taxonomic terms are discussed.  相似文献

Neoseiulella is the most diverse of the six genera of the subfamily Typhlodrominae in Australia, but previously only a single species has been reported from the tropics. Herein, two new species, Neoseiulella eiko sp.n. and N. coreen sp.n., from tropical rainforest in far northern Queensland are described. These mites are the smallest known members of the genus, share a number of unusual character states, and are intermediate in morphology between the two currently recognised species groups. A synopsis of the current placement of Australian Typhlodrominae and a key to the adult females of the Australian genera are provided.  相似文献

Light and transmission electron microscopy have been used to study the gastrodermal gland cells of the triclad Dugesia gonocephala s.l. The events involved in the ultrastructural transformation and the secretion process in these cells were followed at four different stages in both fasted and fed animals. During the feeding stage their secretory granules are directly discharged into the intestinal lumen by means of a secretion process of the holocrine type that is described in this paper. It is suggested that such secretions contribute to extracellular digestion and that disintegration of the gland cells is accompanied by a differentiation of neoblasts into new gland cells, reflecting a turnover of gland cells during the triclad digestive stages.  相似文献
