Uric acid, blood urea nitrogen, glucose, total serum protein, cholesterol, triglyceride, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and chloride concentrations in the blood plus pH, bilirubin, ketone, blood, protein and glucose levels in the urine were determined for gray squirrels captured in Jacksonville, Florida. Significant differences were not noted for any of these values when compared by the age or sex of the animals, by breeding or lactation status, by month of capture, or by habitat type. Depressed blood glucose and elevated blood urea nitrogen levels were observed in squirrels with shock syndrome.  相似文献

Forty-three female and 44 male, sexually mature normal African sand rats (Mystromys albicaudatus) provided serum and urine for determining normal ranges of selected serum chemistry and electrolyte determinations and for routine nonfasted urinalyses. Serum chloride and serum glucose levels were greater and serum sodium levels lower for female rats. An unusually high physiological level of urine protein was detected, and it was determined that standard dipstick methods for determining urine protein levels in this species gave artificially high results. Ketouria and glycosuria were more common in males than in females, but these determinations were not correlated to blood urea nitrogen or to serum glucose levels. No association was found between body weight and any of the serum chemistry, electrolyte or urinalysis variables examined.  相似文献

Well oxygenated blood returning from the placenta is preferentially shunted into the left side of the fetal heart and the ascending aorta. This results in higher oxygen saturation in arterial blood supplying the fetal upper body than in blood supplying the lower body. Since the placenta is also the site of nutrient and waste exchange, we evaluated differences in arterial concentrations of nutrients and waste products in fetal upper and lower body. Studies were carried out on ten, chronically catheterized, third trimester, fetal sheep. Blood samples, drawn simultaneously from the carotid and femoral arteries, were analyzed for glucose, oxygen saturation, oxygen content, total amino acids, lactate, urea nitrogen, and hydrogen ion concentration. Carotid arterial blood had higher levels of glucose (1.4 +/- 0.1 mg/dl (SEM); P less than 0.001), of alpha-amino nitrogen (0.4 +/- 0.1 mg/dl, equivalent to amino acid concentration difference of 2.5 mg/dl, P less than 0.025), of oxygen saturation (9.9 +/- 0.5%, P less than 0.001), and of oxygen content (1.0 +/- 0.1 ml/dl; P less than 0.001). Carotid values exceeded femoral by an average of 10% for glucose, 4% for amino nitrogen, 29% for oxygen saturation and 23% for oxygen content. Carotid arterial blood had lower urea nitrogen, (-0.5 +/- 0.2 mg/dl; P less than 0.05) and hydrogen ion (-1.1 +/- 0.1 nM/L; P less than 0.001) concentrations, but these differences averaged only 2% between vessels. Lactate concentration in the carotid and femoral arteries was the same. Fetal glucose and oxygen levels were closely related.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

One hundred and sixteen colony control dogs (purebred beagles) ranging in age from 56 to 4868 days at the time of sampling, were tested at various intervals over a 10-year period to determine the normal values of several serum constituents. The effects of sex and family line were also noted. With increasing age, serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase, total protein, and cholesterol increased, whereas glucose, serum glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase, creatine phosphokinase, iron, alkaline phosphatase, and albumin decreased. Females had significantly higher levles of urea nitrogen, iron, and cholesterol than males. Males had significantly higher serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase levels. The rate of increase in serum cholesterol with age was greater in males than in females. Males showed no age related changes in levels of urea nitrogen or iron, while the females showed decreasing levels. Significant differences in total protein and albumin were noted in dogs belonging to different family.  相似文献

Oral administration of carnitine in normal and diabetic subjects showed a marked decrease in the level of blood glucose during the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) except for the three hour samples in diabetic subjects, while a decrease in the level of subsequent blood pyruvate samples was observed during the OGTT in normal and diabetic subjects after the administration of carnitine. During the OGTT, the peak of blood glucose and blood pyruvate level was generally delayed in the diabetic subjects. Furthermore, the mean blood pyruvate levels were elevated above those of normal subjects during the late stages of the test. The mean levels of blood glucose and blood pyruvate of all samples after the administration of carnitine were significantly higher in diabetics than the corresponding values in noramls. Carnitine administration decreased the total blood amino acid nitrogen level only in diabetic subjects. Carnitine caused a highly significant increase in the activity of serum alanine aminotransferase in normal and diabetic subjects, while it had no effect on the activity of serum aspartate aminotransferase. In goats, the level of blood glucose during the intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) was not affected by carnitine (1,3 or 6 mg/kg body weight). Carnitine in all doses used had no effect on the total blood amino acid nitrogen during the IVGTT, or on the activity of serum alanine aminotransferase and serum aspartate aminotransferase in the fasting samples. Acetyl-D,L-beta-methylcholine had no effect on the level of blood glucose, total blood amino acid nitrogen, the activity of serum alanine aminotransferase or serum aspartate aminotransferase in normal and diabetic subjects. The level of blood pyruvate decreased both in normal and diabetic subjects, in the samples that represented the peak of the curve. Glycine betaine had no effect on blood glucose, pyruvate, total blood amino acid nitrogen and the activity of serum alanine aminotransferase or serum aspartate amino transferase in normal and diabetic subjects or in goats.  相似文献

Urate is largely excluded from the brain under non‐inflammatory conditions (concentration gradient serum:CSF about 10:1), but increases markedly in Guillain–Barré Syndrome and bacterial meningitis. The oxidation product allantoin is normally not passively distributed between blood and cerebrospinal fluid (gradient 3:1) and increases 5‐fold in CSF of patients with meningitis. Patients with multiple sclerosis had normal levels of urate and allantoin in blood and CSF.  相似文献

1. An automated blood serum chemistry analytical system designed for human usage was employed to establish the levels of 26 different components present in sera obtained from various experimental groups of channel catfish. 2. Comparisons of samples from feral and commercial production pond fish during warm months indicated statistically significant differences in the serum levels of sodium, CO2, urea nitrogen, direct bilirubin, cholesterol, creatinine and protein. 3. Laboratory acclimated and production pond fish exhibited differences in serum electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, phosphorus), serum metabolites (urea nitrogen, creatinine, triglycerides), serum enzymes [gamma-glutamyl transferase, glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), alkaline phosphatase, and amylase], and serum iron. 4. Seasonal (temperature?) differences in production pond fish were noted for 12 serum components including potassium, magnesium, CO2, glucose, creatinine, albumin, iron, alkaline phosphatase, and glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (GPT). 5. Comparisons of samples obtained from laboratory-acclimated fish before and 18 hours after acute handling and transport stress revealed significant differences in only three serum parameters: glucose, LDH, and creatine phosphokinase (CPK). 6. These studies suggest that "normal" values established by any method of sera analysis may be different in the same species depending on the diet, season, and presence of environmental stressors.  相似文献

Hematological, serum biochemistry, and urinalysis values were determined for nine (two females and seven males) adult, free-living European wildcats (Felis silvestris) in the Kocevje Forests of the southern Slovenia. Samples were collected from August 1999 to March 2001. Cats were anesthetized with ketamine and medetomidine. Blood samples were taken by jugular venipuncture and urine samples by bladder puncture. A control group of domestic cats (F. silvestris catus) was assembled to determine if differences exist among blood and urine values between free-living European wildcats and domestic cats. Hematological, biochemical, and urine parameters were similar to those of the control group. Values of glucose, blood urea nitrogen, albumin, mean corpuscular value, basophile count, and alanine aminotransferase were significantly higher than values of the control group. All urine samples contained white blood cells and proteins, and seven of them contained red blood cells.  相似文献

Plasma amino acids of Zucker obese (fa/fa) and lean (Fa/?) rats fed either a reference nonpurified pellet or a cafeteria diet have been studied from 30 to 60 days after birth. Obese rats showed higher plasma branched chain amino acid levels but similar total amino acids, urea and glucose concentrations. The ingestion of a cafeteria diet induced higher levels in many amino acids, as well as in the composite figure in lean rats, but failed to alter total 2-amino nitrogen concentrations in obese rats, despite high levels in several non-essential amino acids and lower values in essential amino acids; urea levels were much lower in rats fed the cafeteria diet. The results are consistent with an impairment of amino acid nitrogen elimination via urea cycle in cafeteria diet-fed rats. This is independent of the hyperinsulinemia-driven plasma accumulation of several essential amino acids induced by genetic obesity. The effects were, then additive.  相似文献

Glucose intolerance was induced in rats by iv infusion of streptozotocin (STZ) in doses of 30, 40, 50, and 100 mg/kg. Serum glucose concentrations were elevated versus controls and weight gains were reduced in a dose-dependent fashion up to 50 mg/kg. Urine outputs and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) values were higher than control values in the animals treated with 40 and 50 mg/kg and serum albumin concentrations were decreased after infusion with 50 mg STZ/kg. Lung phosphatidylcholine (PC) concentrations and dry-to-wet weight ratios were unchanged by STZ treatment, while lung protein and disaturated phosphatidylcholine (DSPC) concentrations were depressed in the 50-mg/kg group. Animals surviving treatment with 100 mg/kg demonstrated increased fasting blood glucose levels, BUN values, and 48-hr urine outputs, and decreased lung protein levels. However, these alterations were less than those found in the 50-mg/kg animals. Pulmonary concentrations of PC, DSPC, and lung dry-to-wet weight ratios were unchanged. It was found advantageous to express the results relative to fasting blood glucose levels. This demonstrated that urine output and BUN values increased and weight gain decreased with rising glucose concentrations, but serum albumin decreased only in moderate and severe hyperglycemia. Fasting glucose concentrations greater than 400 mg/dl were associated with reduced lung DSPC and protein levels, while pulmonary PC and dry-to-wet weight ratios demonstrated no change with increasing hyperglycemia.  相似文献

Abstract: Three forms of enolase isozymes (αα, αγ, and γγ), including nervous system-specific forms, were measured in the cerebrospinal fluid and the blood plasma of jaundiced or nonjaundiced infant rats by means of enzyme immunoassay systems capable of detecting each form of enolase at the 1 amol (10−18 mol) level. Average enolase levels in cerebrospinal fluid in normal rat were 2.0, 0.2 and 0.1 pmol/ml for αα, αγ, and γγ forms, respectively. Levels of αγ and γγ forms (nervous system-specific enolases; NSE) in jaundiced rats, which suffer Purkinje cell degeneration due to the inborn hyperbilirubinemia, were three to four times as high as the normal values. When kernicterus was induced in jaundiced rats by an injection of bucolome, the NSE level in cerebrospinal fluid was elevated up to more than 30-fold the control, together with a significantly higher level of αγ form in blood plasma. These results suggest that assays of NSE in the cerebrospinal fluid or the blood plasma are helpful in detecting neuronal damage in the central nervous system.  相似文献

Brain and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of homovanillic acid (HVA) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) were simultaneously measured in 48 individuals at autopsy. Concentrations of 5-HIAA and HVA in the cerebral cortex were positively correlated with their levels in the CSF for the same individual. Additionally a positive correlation was observed between postmortem CSF levels of 5-HIAA and HVA and a significant concentration gradient for both metabolites was observed in serial fractions of CSF. These findings suggest that determinations of 5-HIAA and HVA in CSF from living individuals may reflect brain metabolite levels as well as the functional activity of these specific neuronal systems.  相似文献

Most studies that have examined raptor plasma chemistry have been conducted on birds living in captivity. In this study, we describe typical plasma chemistry values indicators of body condition in free-living Booted Eagles, Hieraaetus pennatus, from Do?ana National Park (Spain). Values are compared with those of other raptors. Mean concentrations of creatinine, uric acid and urea were lower in adults than in nestlings, while glucose, DAT and AAT were lower in nestlings than in adults. Interactions of age/sex affected plasma mean levels of creatine kinase, glucose, AAT, uric acid and urea. Adult females showed significantly lower levels of creatine kinase, uric acid and urea than adult males and nestlings. Adult males had significantly higher levels of AAT than the other groups. The lowest levels of glucose and the highest levels of uric acid were found in nestling females. We think the differences in blood parameters can be explained by differences in size of species, of individuals (because of both body condition and sexual dimorphism) and diet.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to study the relationship of blood plasma urea nitrogen (PUN) concentrations with NH3, urea nitrogen, K, Mg, P, Ca, and Na concentrations in fluid of preovulatory follicles (experiment 1) and the relationships of PUN concentration and stage of estrus cycle with ammonia and urea nitrogen concentrations in uterine fluids (experiment 2) in early lactation dairy cows. Mean PUN levels were used to distribute cows into two groups: cows with PUN>or=20 mg/dl (HPUN), and cows with PUN<20 mg/dl (LPUN). In experiment 1, blood and follicular fluids from preovulatory follicles of 38 early lactation dairy cows were collected on the day of estrus (day 0) 4h after feed was offered. Follicular fluid NH3 was higher (P<0.01) in HPUN cows (339.0 micromol/L+/-72.2) compared to LPUN cows (93.9 micromol/L+/-13.1). Follicular fluid urea N was higher (P<0.001) in HPUN cows (22.4 mg/dl+/-0.4) compared to LPUN cows (17.0 mg/dl+/-0.3). PUN and follicular fluid urea N were correlated (r2=0.86) within cows. In experiment 2, blood and uterine fluids were collected from 30 cows on day 0 and on day 7. Uterine fluid NH3 was higher (P=0.05) in HPUN cows (1562 micromol/L+/-202) than in LPUN cows (1082 micromol/L+/-202) on day 7, but not on day 0. Uterine fluid urea N was higher (P<0.001) in HPUN cows than in LPUN cows on day 0 (26.9 mg/dl+/-1.3 and 20.4 mg/dl+/-0.7) and day 7 (26.5 mg/dl+/-1.1 and 21.4 mg/dl+/-1.1). There was a correlation (r2=0.17) between PUN and uterine fluid urea N within cows. The results of this study indicate that high PUN concentrations were associated with elevated NH3 and urea N concentrations in the preovulatory follicular fluids on the day of estrus and in the uterine fluid during the luteal phase of the estrous cycle in early lactation dairy cows. Elevated NH3 or urea N concentrations in the reproductive fluids may contribute to reproductive inefficiency in dairy cows with elevated plasma urea nitrogen due to embryo toxicity.  相似文献

Published values for the concentration of Cu in cerebrospinal and intraocular fluids cover a very wide range (0.016 to 1.0 microgram/ml) and include values which are several times higher than those which would be consistent with normal physiology. An atomic absorption spectrophotometer equipped with a graphite furnace was used to measure the Cu concentration in these fluids and in blood plasma of toads, rabbits, and cats. Under standard conditions, these fluids yielded high background absorbance and only fractional recovery of added Cu. Parameters were therefore established which eliminated both the high background and the matrix interference and allowed the determination of Cu in 10-microliters aliquots of diluted blood plasma and undiluted cerebrospinal and ocular fluid samples. Under these conditions the Cu measured in the ocular (0.011 to 0.032 microgram/ml) and cerebrospinal fluids (0.033 to 0.050 microgram/ml) of these three species was lower than most previously reported values and only a small fraction (1-3%) of the concentration of Cu in the plasma of the same animals (0.85 to 1.22 micrograms/ml).  相似文献

Objective

We evaluated the postmortem changes of striated muscle by comparing computed tomography (CT) images obtained postmortem and antemortem in the same patients.

Materials and Methods

We studied 33 consecutive patients who underwent antemortem CT, postmortem CT, and pathological autopsy in our tertiary care hospital between April 2009 and December 2010. Postmortem CT was performed within 20 h after death and was followed by pathological autopsy. Pathological autopsy confirmed the absence of muscular diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, myositis, and myasthenia, in all of the patients. The CT attenuation values of four cardiac muscle sites (anterior wall of the left ventricle, left ventricular free wall, posterior wall of the left ventricle, and the ventricular septum) and two skeletal muscle sites (the pectoralis major muscle and the erector spinae muscle) were compared between antemortem and postmortem CT using paired t test.

Results

Striated muscle had significantly greater attenuation on postmortem CT than on antemortem CT (P<0.001) in all six tissue sites. No significant association was found between postmortem change in the CT attenuation of striated muscle and gender, age, or elapsed time since death.

Conclusion

This is the first longitudinal study to show hyperattenuation of striated muscle on postmortem CT images compared with antemortem CT images in the same patients.  相似文献

The onset of post partum ovarian activity, the number of artificial inseminations (AI) and the time of conception were monitored in 412 Icelandic dairy cows during a period of 3 years. Blood was sampled from the animals at various times after calving and the serum concentration of glucoce, urea, calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) measured. A significant positive correlation was found between the levels of glucose, urea and Ca and the number of days from calving. A significant negative correlation was found between the level of urea and the time of first post partum ovulation. A significant positive correlation was found between the level of glucose and the time of conception. No correlation was found between the blood parameters and the number of AI per animal, the length of first post partum ovarian cycle or the ammount of progesterone found during that cycle. A distinct, although not statistically significant, tendency towards a negative correlation between the level of glucose and the time of first post partum ovulation was found. Our results show that the levels of glucose and urea shortly after parturition do indicate the time of onset of post partum ovarian cyclicity. Our findings indicate that low blood glucose and urea values early post partum lead to subclinical or clinical ketosis which can considerably delay the onset of ovarian activity.  相似文献

Plasma hCT levels were less than 50 pg/ml in 50 normal subjects. In 16 patients with medullary carcinoma of the thyroid (MCT), plasma hCT levels were distinctively elevated and they fell significantly after total thyroidectomy, but in 11 of them plasma levels were still high, indicating the presence of metastases. In 74 patients with the other types of malignancy, plasma hCT levels were found to be high in 9 cases (3 oat cell carcinoma of the lung, 4 malignant carcinoids, one malignant pheochromocytoma and one acute myelocytic leukemia). Except for the leukemic case, all these tumors were derived from neural crest. In 12 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism, plasma hCT levels were less than 20 pg/ml. In 13 hypoparathyroid patients, two with pseudohypoparathyroidism and one with pseudoidiopathic hypoparathyroidism, plasma hCT levels were slightly elevated. Some patients with uremia had elevated plasma hCT levels, but there was no relation between plasma levels of hCT and those of PTH, urea nitrogen or creatinine. In response to Ca (4.5 mg/kg/10 min) or tetragastrin (4 mug/kg/5 min) infusion, a marked increase in plasma hCT was observed in all patients with MCT, but not in normal subjects. In 5 hypoparathyroid patients, a significant increase to both stimuli was also observed in all cases. Two patients with pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism responded to the Ca load. These results indicate that the determination of plasma hCT levels especially after a short Ca or tetragastrin infusion is important to study various pathological conditions.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo report a case that substantiates the presence of hypoglycemia at the time of death of a young man with type 1 diabetes, who was found unresponsive in his undisturbed bed in the morning.MethodsWe describe a 23-year-old man with a history of type 1 diabetes treated with an insulin pump, who had recurrent severe hypoglycemia. In an effort to understand these episodes better and attempt to eliminate them, a retrospective (non-real-time) continuous subcutaneous glucose monitoring system (CGMS) was attached to the patient. He was found dead in his undisturbed bed 20 hours later. The insulin pump and CGMS were both downloaded for postmortem study.ResultsPostmortem download of the data in the CGMS demonstrated glucose levels below 30 mg/dL around the time of his death, with only a minimal counterregulatory response. This finding corresponded to a postmortem vitreous humor glucose of 25 mg/dL. An autopsy showed no major anatomic abnormalities that could have contributed to his death.ConclusionTo our knowledge, this is the first documentation of hypoglycemia at the time of death in a patient with the “dead-in-bed” syndrome. This report should raise the awareness of physicians to the potentially lethal effectsof hypoglycemia and provide justification for efforts directed at avoiding nocturnal hypoglycemia. Recombinant human insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) was administered subcutaneously to each of 5 normal human subjects at doses of 0 mg/kg (control), 0.06 mg/kg, or 0.12 mg/kg successively at one week intervals. After 0.06 mg/kg or 0.12 mg/kg IGF-I injections, plasma IGF-I levels increased from 185 +/- 17 ng/ml (mean +/- SEM) to maximal levels of 396 +/- 21 ng/ml at 3 hours and from 169 +/- 14 ng/ml to 480 +/- 27 ng/ml at 4 hours, respectively. These two peak values were statistically different (p less than 0.05). After 0.06 mg/kg and 0.12 mg/kg IGF-I administration, blood glucose levels decreased from 85 +/- 2 mg/dl to minimal levels of 73 +/- 3 mg/dl at 3 hours and from 83 +/- 1 mg/dl to 50 +/- 4 mg/dl at 2 hours, respectively. These two minimal values were statistically different (p less than 0.001). Serum insulin and C-peptide levels were decreased in a dose dependent manner after IGF-I administration. There were no changes between blood urea nitrogen levels before and 4 hours after IGF-I administration. The urinary GH concentration decreased after 0.06 mg/kg IGF-I administration, but increased and maintained normal values after 0.12 mg/kg IGF-I administration.  相似文献
