Summary The structure and seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton communities in the littoral zone were compared between oligotrophic and eutrophic lakes in the southeastern United States. Differences in diversity and species composition between lakes could be ascribed to long-term variation in nutrients corresponding to trophic status. However, significant within-lake variation could not be accounted for by microstratification of nutrients or other abiotic variables. Local biotic factors, perhaps dominated by the spawning activities of centrarchid fishes, resuspend periphyton and generate tychoplankton which becomes a persistent and integral part of the phytoplankton community in eutrophic systems. The patchy distribution of these biotic factors and resultant tychoplankton may lead to the observed variation. Grazing by herbivorous zooplankton was considered to be the major factor affecting the relative abundance of phytoplankton in the littoral zone, completely overriding the effects of nutrient concentration and biotic interactions between phytoplankton species during spring and summer. The relative importance of tychoplankton and grazing as regulatory factors operates independently of the trophic status or geographical location of a lake, making comparisons of different studies difficult and perhaps meaningless if traditional analyses based only on nutrients and interactions between species of phytoplankton are used. Limnetic as well as littoral components must be considered in future studies of phytoplankton communities in the littoral zone.  相似文献

The interactions between phytoplankton and zooplankton were studied in two large lakes in the Saimaa lake system, Finland. Both are subjected to substantial waste water loading, and exhibit a clear trophic gradient between the loaded and unloaded areas. The phytoplankton and zooplankton were compared in terms of composition, abundance and biomass at 34–39 stations located in different parts of the lakes. At least four mechanisms were thought to affect the composition of plankton communities: (1) the amount of nutrients (trophic gradient), (2) grazing of algae by herbivores, (3) the effect of the algal species composition on feeding by zooplankters (large, colonial algae in the more loaded parts of the lakes) and (4) the regeneration and reorganization of nutrients.  相似文献

Data collected on zooplankton community composition over longer time periods (>?10 years) are rare. We examined among-lake spatial and temporal trends of zooplankton communities from a monitoring programme undertaken in the Waikato region, New Zealand. A total of 39 lakes were sampled over a period of 12 years, between 2007 and 2019, with varying degrees of temporal effort. We focussed particularly on eight lakes, considered here as ‘long-term lakes’, where samples were collected with greater regularity (including 5 with 12 years of data). Among lakes, suspended sediment concentrations and indicators of lake trophic state were inferred to be important in determining the zooplankton distributions; as this region is dominated by shallow lakes, the relative importance of suspended sediments was high. Among the long-term lakes, the greatest dissimilarities in zooplankton community composition among years were in Lake Waahi, where the Australian Boeckella symmetrica was first detected in 2012. That is, the greatest temporal changes to zooplankton composition during the study period were due to the invasion by non-indigenous species, rather than changes in trophic state or other environmental variables; non-native species commonly dominated the individual counts of species through much of 2014 and 2015, with most samples since 2016 being again dominated by native species. Following this lake, the largest and shallowest lakes in the dataset—Whangape and Waikare—exhibited the greatest variability in community composition among years.

  1. High mountain lakes are a network of sentinels, sensitive to any events occurring within their waterbodies, their surrounding catchments and their airsheds. By modifying nutrient balance and availability in water, both local and global changes are expected to alter primary productivity and to trigger strong ecological impacts in these ecosystems.
  2. Predicting ecological trajectories under future change is a key challenge for both scientists and conservation managers. French alpine lakes, in the most southern and western part of the European Alps, have received surprisingly little attention to date. In this article, we address how variations in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) supply are likely to impact the area's phytoplankton growth. We performed N and/or P enrichment microcosm experiments under controlled conditions on 12 phytoplankton assemblages sampled during the summer 2016 in four French alpine lakes with contrasting catchments and N‐deposition regimes.
  3. The nutrients limiting phytoplankton growth varied according to the nutrient stoichiometry of the lake water. In the lakes exposed to high N‐deposition rates (≈700 kg N km–2 year–1), the water contained more N than P and phytoplankton growth in microcosms was either limited by P or not limited by either N or P. In the lakes exposed to low N‐deposition rates (≈500 kg N km–2 year–1), N availability relative to P was lower in the lake with vegetated catchment than in the lake with rocky catchment, resulting in a switch from P to NP colimitation of the phytoplankton in microcosms.
  4. Our data clearly indicate that French alpine lakes do not host the same diversity and structure of phytoplankton communities and that phytoplankton composition influenced phytoplankton growth in microcosms. First, we show that nonmotile colonial chlorophytes appeared in late summer assemblages, with lower growth rates but P‐storage abilities. Second, our findings indicate that the growth of phytoplankton assemblages dominated by diatoms was increasingly limited by silica (SiO2) throughout the summer, along with a 70% decrease in SiO2 concentration in lake water.
  5. The forecast global changes in the French Alps should increase phytoplankton growth in most high mountain lakes where P is the main limiting nutrient, before NP colimitation. These changes are likely to be of lesser extent in lakes with large vegetated catchments in the northern area with lower N‐deposition rates and of greater extent in the southern area with higher N‐deposition rates and future P‐deposition rates.
  6. By investigating the relationship between nutrient availability, phytoplankton composition and phytoplankton growth rate, this experimental laboratory microcosm study will help interpret current multifactorial data from in situ monitoring networks in the Alps. It will also be helpful to develop models to better predict the sentinel lake responses to local and global changes.

Survey samplings on late summer phytoplankton communities were carried out on 48 high mountain lakes located on the Austrian and Italian slopes of the Eastern Alps. The lakes of North Tyrol (A) and South Tyrol (I) were sampled in 2000 as part of the EU project EMERGE (EVK1-CT-1999- 00032). The lakes of Trentino (I) were investigated in other research projects during 1996 and 1997 (Adamello mountain range) and 2000 (catchment of the River Avisio), respectively. The objectives of this paper are: (1) to study taxonomy and biodiversity of Chrysophyceae, Dinophyceae and Cryptophyceae in high altitude lakes of the Eastern Alps; (2) to identify functional flagellate groups characterising lakes with similar habitat properties, (3) to identify the environmental variables driving abundance and distribution of the three selected algal groups, thus contributing to the selection of sensitive bioindicator taxa. The lakes investigated show rather wide morphological, chemical and trophic state gradients. Flagellate algae account for a median relative abundance (R.A.) of 68%. Chrysophyceae are the most important group in terms of biodiversity and R.A. Special flagellate associations could be related to lake features, like catchment geology, mineralization level and nutrient concentrations. However, the distribution of flagellate algae did not allow a complete geographical separation of the lakes studied in the different districts. Multivariate canonical analyses indicate that the distribution of Chrysophyceae is mainly driven by NO3-N concentration and thermal conditions, while Dinophyceae are driven by a combination of alkalinity, altitude, thermal condition and, less importantly, nutrient concentration. Physical properties of the lakes, such as thermal condition and lake depth, represent the principal driving variables for Cryptophyceae. The responses to the different environmental variables suggest that the three flagellate groups analysed might be used as indicators for environmental changes in high mountain lakes of the Eastern Alps.  相似文献

Crustacean zooplankton data were compiled from long-term observational studies at seven large shallow Florida lakes, to determine whether there are general characteristics in regard to species composition, body size, and biomass. In particular, we examined whether patterns in body size and species richness fit empirical models developed by Stanley Dodson. The lakes included range in size from 125 to 1730 km2 and encompass mesotrophic to hyper-eutrophic conditions. We found that zooplankton biomass was strongly dominated by one species of calanoid copepod—Arctodiaptomus dorsalis. Large daphnids were absent, and Cladocera assemblages were dominated by small taxa such as Ceriodaphnia, Chydorus, and Eubosmina. The total number of species of pelagic cladocerans (8–12) was consistent with Dodson’s predictions based on lake area. The average size of crustacean zooplankton in Florida lakes is small in comparison with temperate communities. A. dorsalis is the smallest calanoid copepod in North America, and the mean length of Cladocera (0.6 mm) is consistent with Dodson’s results that size decreases from temperate to tropical zones. Total biomass of crustacean zooplankton was very low, ratios of zooplankton to phytoplankton biomass (0.01–0.1) are among the lowest reported in the literature, and the zooplankton displayed short-lasting early spring peaks in biomass. Cladocera were almost entirely absent in spring and summer. Factors known to occur in Florida lakes, which appear to explain these characteristics of biomass, include intense fish predation and high summer water temperature.  相似文献

1. Air temperature will probably have pronounced effects on the composition of plankton communities in northern lake ecosystems, either via indirect effects on the export of essential elements from catchments or through direct effects of water temperature and the ice‐free period on the behaviour of planktonic organisms. 2. We assessed the role of temperature by comparing planktonic communities in 15 lakes along a 6 °C air temperature gradient in subarctic Sweden. 3. We found that the biomass of phytoplankton, bacterioplankton and the total planktonic biomass were positively related to air temperature, probably as a result of climatic controls on the export of nitrogen from the catchment (which affects phytoplankton biomass) and dissolved organic carbon (affecting bacterioplankton biomass). 4. The structure of the zooplankton community, and top down effects on phytoplankton, were apparently not related to temperature but mainly to trophic interactions ultimately dependent on the presence of fish in the lakes. 5. Our results suggest that air temperature regimes and long‐term warming can have strong effects on the planktonic biomass in high latitude lakes. Effects of temperature on the structure of the planktonic community might be less evident unless warming permits the invasion of fish into previous fishless lakes.  相似文献

The zooplankton communities of seven Rotorua, New Zealand, lakes of different trophic status were studied in 1977–78. They were generally dominated by the calanoid copepod, Calamoecia lucasi. Bosmina meridionalis occurred in all the lakes and Ceriodaphnia dubia in most. Only small numbers of Macrocyclops albidus ever occurred. Rotifers were not studied in detail. Community composition was similar to that in other northern New Zealand lakes. No well defined patterns of seasonal change in abundance were found and the timing of changes, which were of low magnitude, was different in each lake. Clutch sizes in all species were small. Calamoecia population parameters were analysed using multivariate methods and shown to be related to lake trophic level. Population densities were higher in more productive lakes whereas breeding levels were inversely related to indices of trophic status and population abundance. It is suggested that the populations, as in other northern New Zealand lakes, are food-limited, probably as a consequence of a lack of marked climatic seasonality and the absence of major predation pressures. Groupings of the lakes based on the Calamoecia data are in general agreement with those derived from parallel studies of water chemistry, phytoplankton and macrobenthos.  相似文献

Environmental heterogeneity plays a fundamental role in driving species distributions by, for one, fostering niche dimensionality. Within lake ecosystems, species distributions and concordance patterns are driven by both local and regional heterogeneity, though their relative importance across trophic levels has rarely been explored. We developed a statistical framework to compare responses of taxa from different trophic levels to abiotic factors and determine how this affected multi-trophic network structures. In particular, we used multi-species concordance modelling (concordance analysis and RV coefficient) to determine species associations and correlations within and among three trophic levels (phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish communities sampled across 49 southern Québec lakes, covering eight hydrological regions). We then used multiple factor analysis, latent variable modelling and local contributions of sites to beta diversity to assess the relative importance of major environmental gradients in structuring species co-responses and species interaction turnover across the landscape. Our analyses confirmed that concordant species within each trophic level varied jointly or segregated into different pelagic food webs in Québec lakes where important acidification and eutrophication took place. Some keynote species were indicators of different food web compartments and distinguished groups of lakes along multiple environmental niche dimensions. Among the three trophic levels examined, zooplankton depicted the highest proportion of species concordance and appeared to act as a trophic linkage between phytoplankton and fish. Ultimately, the losses or gains in species richness and species interactions were strongly driven by environmental gradients. This study provides for the first time a combined analysis of the effects of environmental heterogeneity on ecological communities belonging to three trophic levels sampled near simultaneously across an 800 km broad lacustrine landscape. The new framework developed in this study has a great potential to better understand the complex response of aquatic ecosystems in a world increasingly affected by multiple, cumulative stressors.  相似文献

We report here the results of an experimental study designed to compare algal responses to short-term manipulations of zooplankton in three California lakes which encompass a broad range of productivity (ultra-oligotrophic Lake Tahoe, mesotrophic Castle Lake, and strongly eutrophic Clear Lake). To assess the potential strength of grazing in each lake, we evaluated algal responses to a 16-fold range of zooplankton biomass. To better compare algal responses among lakes, we determined algal responses to grazing by a common grazer (Daphnia sp.) over a range ofDaphnia densities from 1 to 16 animals per liter. Effects of both ambient grazers andDaphnia were strong in Castle Lake. However, neither ambient zooplankton norDaphnia had much impact on phytoplankton in Clear Lake. In Lake Tahoe, no grazing impacts could be demonstrated for the ambient zooplankton butDaphnia grazing had dramatic effects. These results indicate weak coupling between phytoplankton and zooplankton in Clear Lake and Lake Tahoe, two lakes which lie near opposite extremes of lake trophic status for most lakes. These observations, along with work reported by other researchers, suggest that linkages between zooplankton and phytoplankton may be weak in lakes with either extremely low or high productivity. Biomanipulation approaches to recover hypereutrophic lakes which aim only to alter zooplankton size structure may be less effective if algal communities are dominated by large, inedible phytoplankton taxa.  相似文献
