Several hypotheses aim to explain the evolution of helping behavior,but conclusive experimental support for evaluating the relativeimportance of individual hypotheses is still lacking. We reporton two field experiments conducted to test the "territory inheritance"and "pay-to-stay" hypotheses in the cooperatively breeding cichlidfish Neolamprologus pulcher The territory inheritance hypothesiswas tested by removing one parent, which created breeding vacancies.In 39% of cases, same-sex helpers took over the breeding spot;in 44% of cases helpers continued helping new breeders, and17% were evicted by new breeders. Helpers that were closelysize matched to the removed breeder had a better chance of gainingthe breeding spot Male helpers tended to continue helping aftera takeover more often than females.The pay-to-stay hypothesiswas tested-by temporarily removing helpers. Whereas breedersdid not respond aggressively to removals, other group membersattacked the removed helpers on their return, and 29% were eventuallyevicted. The returning helpers assisted more by increasing theirrate of territory maintenance and defense and visiting the broodchamber more frequently Size and sex of removed helpers didnot explain the observed aggressive reactions of other groupmembers. Thus, our results support both hypotheses: N. pulcherneeds to pay with help to be allowed to remain protected inthe family group, and there they may inherit the natal territory.N. pulcher helpers gain direct benefits from helping behavior.  相似文献

As yet, cooperative breeding has been described only for some fish species. However, evidence is accumulating that it is widespread among Lake Tanganyika cichlids. We studied the cooperative breeding system of the substrate breeding cichlid Neolamprologus savoryi. Breeding groups typically consisted of a large breeding male with one to four breeding females and three to 33 helpers (mean group size: 14.3 members). Group size was significantly related to breeding male and female body sizes, and larger males had more breeding females and larger sized male helpers. The size of the largest female in the group was positively related to the number and sizes of secondary breeding females and female helpers. In case of multiple breeding females, these females usually divided the group's territory into sub‐territories, each with its own helpers (subgroups). Interspersed between groups, independent fish were detected defending an individual shelter (4.4% of all fish). In 9% of the groups no breeding female was present. All group members participated in territory defence and maintenance, and showed submissive behaviours to larger group members. As expected, the level of between‐subgroup conflicts was high compared with the level of within‐subgroup conflicts. We compare these results with data available from other cooperatively breeding fishes.  相似文献

In most cooperative breeders, dominants suppress the reproductionof subordinates. However, two previous studies of Neolamprologuspulcher, a cooperatively breeding cichlid fish, have suggestedthat socially subordinate helper males sneak fertilizationsfrom dominant breeding males. If such sneaking does occur, boththeoretical work and empirical studies of other fish speciessuggest that sperm competition will select for increased reproductiveinvestment by sneaker males, relative to more dominant males.To address these issues, we quantified gonadal investment andsperm characteristics of 41 N. pulcher male breeders and 62male helpers from 55 groups in Lake Tanganyika. Gonadal investmentfollowed patterns consistent with reproductive suppression,with breeders having considerably larger testes masses thanhelpers. Breeders also had faster and longer swimming spermand a higher percentage of motile sperm compared to helpers.However, sperm characteristics of large helpers were similarto those of breeders, but these same helpers had lower testesmasses. Thus, large helpers had sperm that were physiologicallyequivalent to that of breeders, but their relatively small gonadsimply that they were reproductively suppressed.  相似文献

The effects of callitrichid primate helpers (allocare-givers other than an infant's father) on the survival, reproduction or behavior of infants and parents are reviewed, using both published studies and data from free-ranging golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia). Three lines of evidence suggest that helpers may increase their own inclusive fitness: (1) The number of adult males acting as helpers in free-ranging groups is correlated with the number of surviving infants in 3 callitrichid species. However, the lack of a negative correlation with number of infants dying suggests that activities other than direct infant care (e.g. territory defense) may be more important, especially in newly formed groups. (2) In 2 species, captive groups with helpers carry infants for longer periods of time than do groups without helpers. Whether such differences would translate into meaningful survival differences in free-ranging groups is unclear. (3) Helpers reduce the energetic burden of parents by reducing the amount of time they spend transporting or provisioning infants in at least 4 species. Reproductive males are more likely than reproductive females to benefit from the presence of helpers, reducing their investment in infant care activities as the number of helpers in the group increases. In free-ranging golden lion tamarins, the reproductive tenure of males, but not females, increases with the number of helpers in the group, suggesting that a reduction in energetic investment may translate into increased survival. 'Decisions' made by helpers to participate in infant transport are weighed against competing needs for foraging, vigilance, territory defense and, in some cases, prospecting for breeding opportunities. Given this complexity, a sophisticated model may be required to answer the question of how helpers 'decide' to participate in infant care versus other activities.  相似文献

Large male helpers in the cooperatively breeding cichlid Neolamprologus pulchergain reproductive success by parasitizing the reproductive effort ofmale territory owners. Under controlled, experimental conditionswe examined the genetic relatedness between the members of broodpairs (n = 14), their male helpers (n = 8), and offspring (n= 292) in seven families. We used multilocus DNA fingerprintingto check for potential reproductive parasitism by male helpersand to assess their fertilization success. Of offspring producedin these families, 10.3% were sired by helpers. In parasitizedbroods, helper fertilization success varied between 12.5% and35.8%. Male helpers parasitized parental reproduction when theirbody size exceeded 4.5 cm standard length (SL), even thoughsexual maturity may be reached much earlier (3.5 cm SL). Twoof three parasitic helpers were punished by severe aggressiveattacks when parasitizing the reproduction of breeders, whichled to their expulsion from the territory. This study demonstratesa potential fitness benefit to broodcare helpers that is oftenneglected. It also points to the delicate balance that may exist betweencooperative and competitive behavior in cooperatively breeding species.  相似文献

‘Helping’ in birds and mammals involves seemingly altruistic behaviour. In the cichlid fish Lamprologus birchardi helpers are usually young of former broods staying in their parents' territories and participating in all kinds of parental duties (Broodcare, territory maintenance and defence). The discovery of helpers in fish offered the chance of attempting an extensive analysis of potential costs and benefits influencing the evolution of helpers in a vertebrate. Three factors proved to be of major importance in the cost-benefit analysis of helping as opposed to leaving for family-independent nonreproductive aggregations. Due to investment and to their rank within a family's hierarchy, helpers grow at a slower rate than non-helpers. This cost is compensated for by (i) a lower mortality risk to helpers caused by their access to a defended shelter and by protection afforded by bigger family members, and (ii) a positive contribution by helpers to the future reproductive success of their parents: females with helpers produce bigger clutches and consequently more free-swimming fry (=siblings). Other variables, such as the helpers' influence on the relative breeding success of their parents, broodcare experience through helping, the chances of territory take-over, parasitism of parents' reproduction and cannibalism are of minor importance. Similar social organizations in other fish are discussed with respect to their ecology and are compared with cooperatively breeding birds and mammals.  相似文献

Many studies have attempted to explain the evolution of cooperation, yet little attention has been paid to what factors control the amount or kind of cooperation performed. Kin selection theory suggests that more cooperation, or help, should be given by relatives. However, recent theory suggests that under specific ecological and demographic conditions, unrelated individuals must 'pay to stay' in the group and therefore may help more. We tested these contrasting predictions using the cooperatively breeding fish, Neolamprologus pulcher, and found that the degree of work effort by helpers depended on which helping behaviours were considered and on their level of relatedness to the breeding male or female. In the field, helpers unrelated to the breeding male performed more territory defence, while helpers unrelated to the breeding female contributed less to territory defence. In the laboratory, unrelated group members helped more. Our work demonstrates that a number of factors in addition to kinship shape cooperative investment patterns.  相似文献

In cooperative breeders, sexually mature subordinates can either queue for chances to inherit the breeding position in their natal group, or disperse to reproduce independently. The choice of one or the other option may be flexible, as when individuals respond to attractive dispersal options, or they may reflect fixed life-history trajectories. Here, we show in a permanently marked, natural population of the cooperatively breeding cichlid fish Neolamprologus pulcher that subordinate helpers reduce investment in territory defence shortly before dispersing. Such reduction of effort is not shown by subordinates who stay and inherit the breeding position. This difference suggests that subordinates ready to leave reduce their investment in the natal territory strategically in favour of future life-history perspectives. It seems to be part of a conditional choice of the dispersal tactic, as this reduction in effort appears only shortly before dispersal, whereas philopatric and dispersing helpers do not differ in defence effort earlier in life. Hence, cooperative territory defence is state-dependent and plastic rather than a consistent part of a fixed life-history trajectory.  相似文献

In cooperatively breeding species, care provided by helpers may affect the dominant breeders’ investment trade‐offs between current and future reproduction. By negatively compensating for such additional care, breeders can reduce costs of reproduction and improve their own chances of survival. Alternatively, helper care can be additive to that of dominants, increasing the fledging fitness of the current brood. However, the influence helpers have on brood care may be affected by group size and territory quality. Therefore, the impact of helping needs to be disentangled from other factors determining offspring investment before conclusive inferences about the effect of help on additive and compensatory care can be made. We used 20 years of provisioning data to investigate the effect of helping on provisioning rates in the facultative cooperatively breeding Seychelles warbler Acrocephalus sechellensis. Our extensive dataset allowed us to statistically disentangle the effects of helper presence, living in larger groups and different food availability. We show compensatory and additive care (i.e., partial compensation) in response to helper provisioning. Helpers lightened the provisioning load of the dominant male and female and increased total provisioning to nestlings. This was irrespective of group size or territory quality (food availability). Moreover, our results illustrate sex‐specific variation in parental care over the course of the breeding event. We discriminate between temporal variation, group size, and territory quality processes affecting cooperative care and as such, gain further insight into the importance of these factors to the evolutionary maintenance of helping behavior.  相似文献

Helping behaviour in cooperative breeders has been intensively studied in many animal taxa, including arthropods, birds and mammals. In these highly social systems, helpers typically engage in brood care and the protection of dependent young. Such helping systems also exist in cooperatively breeding cichlid species of Lake Tanganyika. However, breeding in these species happens in clefts, narrow holes or shelters underneath stones. Therefore, direct brood care by breeders and helpers has thus far only been observed under artificial laboratory conditions. Under natural conditions, brood care behaviour has been estimated indirectly by determining the time spent in the breeding chamber, or by the number of visits to the breeding chamber. The reliability of such substitutes needs to be validated, for instance, by demonstrating alloparental egg care of helpers through direct observations in nature. Here, we describe direct egg care by a male helper of the cooperatively breeding cichlid Neolamprologus savoryi in the field. The helper inspected and cleaned the eggs and defended them against predators. By reconstructing the genetic relatedness using microsatellite markers, we show that the helper was the son of the breeding male, but unrelated to the breeding female. The genetic mother of the helper was defending a different territory next to the one where the helper showed alloparental egg care. This indicates that the helper had dispersed inside the male territory to assist another female to care for his half‐siblings. These results demonstrate alloparental egg care without reproductive share in a fish species under natural conditions, underlining that helping behaviour in cooperatively breeding fish has a strong non‐self‐serving component.  相似文献
