Interannual population oscillations ofMonoporeia affinis and sedentary chironomids are negatively correlated in Lake Mälaren. Sedentary chironomid abundance regressed againstM. affinis density was highly significant at a lag response of one year (adj. R2=0.54, P=0.0001). The inverse correlation between Tanytarsini (Micropsectra sp. andTanytarsus sp.) andM. affinis densities supports a recruitment limitation hypothesis, viz. that the growth or survival of early instar chironomids is low at high amphipod densities. Microcosm studies showed density-dependent effects on the growth and survival of second instarCh. riparius larvae across an amphipod density gradient. No significant effects were found on growth or survival of third instars. These findings support the chironomid recruitment limitation hypothesis. Amphipod predation on early instar chironomid larvae is suggested as a population controlling mechanism.  相似文献

We studied the seasonal variation in abundance and distribution of shorebirds and chironomid Chironomus salinarius larvae in both traditional and industrial salines in the Odiel marshes, south-west Spain, in 2001. We selected 12 ponds that were representative of the different phases of the salt production process. The benthic chironomids were sampled in each pond every 2 months, and the birds were counted weekly. Chironomid larvae were most abundant in spring and autumn, and in the ponds of lower salinity. The density of larvae averaged 7023 ± 392 m−2 (±SE) over the six sampling events. Shorebirds were always more abundant at high tide than at low tide, and were especially abundant during the spring and autumn migration periods when up to 20,775 birds were counted. A total of 24 species were recorded, six of which were present in internationally important numbers. The salines were especially important as foraging and roosting habitat during migration. The percentage of birds that were feeding in the ponds was positively correlated with the abundance of chironomid larvae at accessible depths. The number of feeding birds was also higher in ponds with more chironomid larvae available. Despite more intensive management, industrial salines held higher densities of birds and a similar abundance of chironomids when compared with traditional salines.  相似文献

Summary Larvae pass through five instars in the temperate, subterranean ponerine ant, Amblyopone silvestrii. Field colonies displayed a large decrease in the number of eggs during mid-summer, despite the fact that queens maintained fully developed ovaries with mature eggs. Observations of laboratory colonies indicate that cannibalism by 1st and 2nd instar larvae caused this decrease in egg number. These instars consumed a total of 66–75% of eggs in the nest, with each larva consuming 2–3 eggs before molting to the 3rd instar. At that time the larvae began to feed on arthropods. The preferred prey of A. silvestrii consists of entire centipedes; the large size of these prey items relative to the size of early instar larvae makes it difficult for the larvae to feed on these prey. Additionally, workers of A. silvestrii do not engage in oral trophallaxis. Consequently, oophagy is a plausible method to feed these very small larvae.  相似文献

Long-term changes in distribution and taxonomic composition of chironomid larvae and oligochaetes in two water storage reservoirs in The Netherlands were studied. A succession among the chironomid species was observed. In the last 10–15 years chironomid densities varied. Compared with other lakes chironomid densities were high. Densities of chironomids were higher in the littoral zone than in the profundal zone. The opposite was found for oligochaetes. Densities and composition of the chironomid fauna in the two reservoirs were similar.Procladius, Tanytarsus andHarnischia dominated at all depths. However, pupal exuviae samples showed some differences in chironomid taxonomic composition between the two reservoirs. Orthocladiinae, rarely found in bottom samples, abounded in pupal exuviae samples.  相似文献

Pteromalus cerealellae (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) is an ectoparasitoid of several stored-product insect pests. Very little information has been published on its biology and development in host larvae, which typically are concealed within seeds. We documented the development of P. cerealellae within fourth instar larvae of its concealed host, Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) infesting cowpea seeds. The preimaginal life stages of the parasitoid were characterized for the first time using morphological structures revealed by microscopic techniques including scanning electron microscopy. Pteromalus cerealellae produces hymenopteriform eggs and larvae. Eggs hatch into 13-segmented first instar larvae with peripneustic condition of spiracles. The larvae have simple, tusk-like mandibles, whereas the mandibles of the pupae and the adults are of the conventional toothed types. Using statistical analyses of the sizes of the larval mandibles and head capsules in conjunction with reliable characters such as the number of exuviae on the body of parasitoid larvae, cuticular folding, and excretion of the meconium, we recorded four larval instars for P. cerealellae. The data showed significant positive correlations between larval mandible lengths and widths of larval head capsules, as well as between mandible lengths and larval instars, suggesting that mandible length is a good predictor of the number of instars in P. cerealellae. Developmental time from egg to adult emergence was ∼12 d for females and ∼11 days for males at 30 ± 1°C, 70 ± 5% r.h. and 12L:12D photoperiod.  相似文献

Female Aphidecta obliterata consumed an average of 26.6 ± 5.8 Elatobium abietinum and males consumed an average of 19.9 ± 3.2 Elatobium abietinum, but there was no significant difference in the number consumed between the sexes. In Petri dish trials, the larval stages of A. obliterata and all stages of Adalia bipunctata appeared to exhibit a Type II response to prey density, although A. obliterata adults showed a more linear response to prey density. There was no significant difference between the functional responses of the 3rd instars of the two coccinellid species, but there was a significant difference between the responses shown by the 1st instars, with A. obliterata larvae consuming more than those of A. bipunctata, especially at low densities, suggesting that the two species respond differently to an increase in prey density. At low prey densities, adults and 4th instars of both species exhibited a similar response to an increase in prey density but at higher densities the 4th instars and adult stages of A. bipunctata showed higher attack rates when compared with the same stages of A. obliterata.Adult and 4th instar A. obliterata exhibited Type II functional responses on spruce sections. The 4th instar A. obliterata larva appeared to be a more effective predator than the adult of the species, and was more effective when compared with adult A. bipunctata at lower prey densities but A. bipunctata adults appeared to be a more effective predator at higher prey densities. The host plant affected the rate of consumption by adult A. obliterata as adults on Sitka spruce sections consumed significantly higher numbers of aphids than their counterparts on Norway spruce. This was most noticeable at densities above 16 aphids. The distributions of the two coccinellid species in the olfactometer were significantly affected by the presence of host plant material. Aphidecta obliterata adults were found in significantly higher numbers in the Sitka spruce chambers than the control chambers (those without plant material). Adalia bipunctata adults were found in significantly lower numbers in the Norway spruce chamber than the control chamber.Although A. bipunctata has a higher level of voracity than A. obliterata, the latter is more adapted to the spruce environment and the boom and bust population dynamics of E. abietinum.  相似文献

Caddisfly larvae are typically restricted to benthic microhabitats due to the presence of mobile tubular cases constructed out of mineral or organic material. Members of one family (Leptoceridae) use setae on extended metathoracic legs to swim. We describe the swimming behavior of a North American caddisfly, Triaenodes tardus, and experimentally evaluate two hypotheses proposed to explain this behavior. Triaenodes swam 1.47 cm/s, while carrying almost twice their mass in the case material. The larvae employ a stereotypic sequence of motions that likely reduce resistance during the upstroke and increases forward momentum during the downstroke. When placed on substrates of different sizes, larvae swam more on fine sediments but did not elevate off the sediment. After larvae were provided with living or artificial vegetation, the number of swimming bouts decreased compared to a pre-treatment observation period. These results indicate swimming likely does not function to facilitate movement off fine sediments, but rather, helps larvae locate and move between aquatic macrophytes which are the primary habitat of this, and other, swimming species.  相似文献

Results of the first long-term investigation of the profundal chironomid fauna of Starnberger See, a prealpine lake are reported. Data are presented on the qualitative and quantitative composition of the chironomid fauna in the profundal of Starnberger See, on the spatial variation, and on the phenology of the dominant species, based on pupal occurrence and the seasonal distribution of larval instars. Twenty-five distinct chironomid taxa could be recorded in the profundal zone. Typical inhabitants of the profundal zone of Starnberger See are the larvae of the genus Micropsectra. The maximum abundance of Micropsectra larvae were found at 60 m with 5644 Ind.m−2. Abundance, distribution and phenology of the dominant chironomid species are discussed in comparison with other lakes.  相似文献

The acceptability of three widely distributed Australian Menispermaceae,Tinospora smilacina Benth.,Sarcopetalum harveyanum F. Muell. andStephania japonica (Thunb.) Miers, as food for larvae of the fruitpiercing moth,Othreis fullonia (Clerck), was examined in three laboratory experiments. When larvae were presented with plant species individually total development times were shortest onT. smilacina and longest onS. japonica, despite relatively similar consumption rates within most instars.T. smilacina elicited greater (P<0.05) relative growth rates thanS. japonica in all instars except the 6th. In the second experiment, when larvae were allowed to select from each of the 3 plants, noS. japonica was chosen by 1 st instars and it represented only 3.7% of food consumed by 2nd instars. Significantly moreT. smilacina was eaten in each instar thanS. japonica, and more thanS. harveyanum except in the 2nd and 4th instars. The final experiment examined the abilities of larvae to switch hosts when forced after the 1st and 3rd instars. After the first or second food change largest average headcapsule widths were associated with feeding onT. smilacina as the most recent food. Feeding by final instars onT. smilacina also resulted in the shortest development time and highest puparial weights. While some larvae survived irrespective of plant sequence 83.3% of the recorded mortality occurred while larvae were exposed toS. japonica, principally during the 1st instar. These experiments lend support to field observations which suggest thatT. smilacina is a major host ofO. fullonia whileS. japonica is notS. harveyanum is probably an important alternate host whenT. smilacina is scarce.  相似文献

Some mugilid fish are known to enhance small phytoplankton in freshwater macrophyte-free environments due to zooplankton depletion. This suggests that they may have negative effects on natural macrophyte beds of freshwater and oligohaline lagoons due to phytoplantkon enhancement. To test this hypothesis, we compared the ecosystems of control enclosures that contained no fish with those of enclosures stocked with Liza saliens at two different densities. The occurrence of L. saliens at a density of 321±92.42 kg ha–1 reduced cladoceran density, depleted epiphytic chironomid larvae, enhanced mayfly nymphs and cyclopoid copepods and reduced the organic matter content of sediment, all in comparison with control enclosures. At a density of 673±42.04 kg ha–1, L. saliens reduced total zooplankton density, depleted epiphytic and sediment dwelling chironomid larvae and enhanced mayfly nymphs. The organic matter contents of sediment was not affected. These results showed that L. saliens was very effective in reducing zooplankton density even when macrophyte biomass was high. However, these effects do not affect phytoplankton density, probably because zooplankton was dominated by species with low filter-feeding rates and macrophytes depleted nutrients.  相似文献

The behaviour of Diplonychus rusticum feeding on chironomid larvae has been investigated under laboratory conditions. Changes in the percentage of material extracted from prey indicated that feeding for the first two minutes enabled the predator to obtain approximately 33% of the available food; feeding for 10 minutes resulted in only 60% extraction. Comparing the percentage of each prey consumed by D. rusticum exposed to various prey densities, it was apparent that predators were more wasteful and ate less of each prey as chironomid density increased. Because the rate of food intake declined as a greater proportion of each prey was extracted, predators exposed to high chironomid densities reduced the amount of each prey consumed thereby conforming to a simple optimal feeding model.  相似文献

This work explores the effect of darkness on the swimming behaviour of females of the rotifer Asplanchna brightwelli. Females were filmed in flat dishes alternately in white light (WL, 5000 µW cm–2) and in infra-red light (IR, 155 µW cm–2), each female for a total of eight successive periods of fifteen minutes per period. An automated tracking system was used to describe the swimming path of each female: twenty five x and y coordinates of the center of gravity of the animal per second, in a discrete space of 512 × 512 pixels. Indices characterizing the swimming performances of the females were then calculated: linear speed, angular speed and other angular parameters of the tracks. A Principal Component Analysis of swimming characteristics discriminated between WL tracks and IR tracks. Females swam slower and turned more in darkness than in light. These results show that beside a positive phototactic response, there is a photokinesis which increases the dispersion of animals in the light.  相似文献

Consumption of larvae and females ofAphis craccivora Koch by 1st and 4th larvae and adults ofCheilomenes vicina (Muls.) was studied under fluctuating temperature (24–30°C). The early aphid instars were consumed in significantly greater numbers than later instars and females. The feeding rates ofC. vicina were significantly positively correlated with the population density of prey. The number of prey consumed daily by each predator stage tested, increased more steeply at lower than at higher prey densities, exhibiting thus the type 2 functional response

Population dynamics of chironomid larvae in the littoral zone of Lake Maarsseveen I were investigated to a depth of 6 m. No essential differences in the composition and density between various sampling stations in the shallow sand flats were found. Two species,Cladotanytarsus mancus andStictochironomus sticticus, were found to be the main components of the chironomid population to a depth of 4 m. The density ofCladotanytarsus, which occurred predominantly to a depth of 1 m, increased from June to a maximum in December. In May and June, the entireCladotanytarsus population emerged.Stictochironomus had its peak of abundance in June. From this cohort, a part, differing in size for each of the various years, emerged in August. The remainder of this population, together with the offspring of the August adults, emerged in May. The size of the August midges, and the number of its eggs was smaller than that of the May midges. At depths greater than 4 m,Tanytarsus bathophillus was found to be the dominant chironomid. In summer the abundance of the small (second and third instars)Stictochironomus was primarily affected by water mite predation. In autumn and winter,Cladotanytarsus was the main food source for water mites. In autumn, whenStictochironomus larvae have molted into the fourth instar, predation by bream decreased the density of these larvae. In winter, the impact of this fish is negligible.  相似文献

This paper is focused on diapause and polyphenism of development of Lagria hirta L. and tries to unravel its mechanism of life-history adaptation. Lagria hirta, distributed widely in Europe, has a strictly univoltine life cycle. The results showed that larval diapause and moulting polymorphism were the deciding factors that made L. hirta maintain its univoltinism and keep a flexible relation between seasonal changes and life-history phases. In the laboratory, larvae of this species were not able to pupate if kept at constant temperatures of 5 °, 10 °, 15 °, 20 °, 25 ° or 30 °C combined with a photoperiod of either LD (L16:D8) or SD (L8:L16). Pupation only occurred if larvae were reared at 15 °–25 °C when intervened by a three-month chilling at 5 °C in stages L3, L4, L5 or L6. A chilling treatment was shown to be obligatory for the termination of its larval diapause and had an accelerating and synchronizing effect on larval development. Larval diapause of L. hirta was characterized by no pupation and more moulting in advanced instars, longer duration of each single stage, and moulting desynchronization. Larval development was found to be variable with respect to the total number of instars: most larvae underwent a total of seven or eight moults; some larvae might even moult once or twice more, but they seldom pupated. It seemed that the choice for the 7-instar or the 8-instar development did not directly relate to any of the external conditions, such as temperature, photoperiod, and stages with chilling treatment. This polyphenism was observed in the same group under identical conditions and even in a single egg clutch. In L. hirta, overwintering in different stages of L3–L6, and choosing the 7- or 8-instar pathway of development are two features that increase the plasticity and flexibility in coordinating its life cycle with seasonal change, that varies unpredictably from year to year.  相似文献

Abundances of white sucker, 100–500 mm FL, were not significantly different among the epilimnia, metalimnia and portions of the hypolimnia shallower than 20 m in each of two lakes. However, small suckers < 200 mm were captured most frequently in the epilimnion and no white suckers were captured in the deepest region, 20–38 m, of the two lakes. White suckers consumed prey from all three temperature zones in each lake. Prominent food items were Hyalella azteca and the chironomid larvae Heterotrissocladius, Djalmabatista and Procladius. Despite differences in relative densities of benthic invertebrates among thermal zones of the two lakes, suckers in neither lake foraged exclusively on prey of epilimnetic origin. Suckers captured in the metalimnia foraged on invertebrates that were common to all three thermal zones. And, only 0–4% of the suckers captured in the hypolimnia of the two lakes contained prey that were unique to the epilimnia. Suckers caught in the hypolimnia mainly consumed deep water invertebrates; 83% of the suckers foraged in the metalimnion and hypolimnion of Islets Lake and 45% foraged in the hypolimnion in Burnt Island Lake. Consequently there was little evidence of a massive inshore feeding migration followed by a post-feeding return to the hypolimnion. Northern pike and lake trout rarely fed on white suckers in these lakes and thus piscivory was an unlikely factor in the observed distribution of suckers.  相似文献

Three species of hemipteran predators preyed differently upon 1st instarHeliothis punctiger Wallengren larvae.Cermatulus nasalis consumed more larvae thanOechalia schellenbergii which consumed more larvae thanTropiconabis nigrolineatus. All the species consumed significantly less 1st instar larvae on plants than what they consumed in Petri-dishes. Fifth instar predators showed significant differences in terms of prey consumption due to sex independent of searching conditions. Only 4th and 5th instars ofT. nigrolineatus attacked and captured 2nd instars ofH. punctiger larvae. The other 2 species however readily attacked and consumed 2nd instarH. punctiger larvae. Their prey consumption was similar in Petri-dishes and on plants. Only 5th instars ofT. nigrolineatus could subdue and capture 3rd instarH. punctiger larvae. Second instar pentatomids captured just one 3rd instar larva but older instars killed and ate more. Fourth instarH. punctiger larvae were immune to attacks by allT. nigrolineatus and younger pentatomids due to their defense ploys but 5th instar pentatomids could subdue and capture them. None of the predators captured 5th instarH. punctiger larvae except few 5th instar females ofC. naslis andO. schellenbergii.   相似文献

Summary The effect of a predatory leech, Nephelopsis obscura, on survivorship, growth, and production of chronomid larvae was studied by enclosure experiments carried out in a small pond. The prey population was composed almost entirely of the tubiculous, microphagous chironomid larvae, Chironomus riparius and Glyptotendipes paripes. Nephelopsis significantly reduced chironomid survivorship within the enclosures, and accounted for most of the measured mortality of fourth instar larvae. The cropping by Nephelopsis was not significantly biased toward either prey species. In long-term experiments (66 d) chironomid biomass in enclosures without leeches reached much higher levels than in enclosures containing Nephelopsis. This increase in biomass was due to growth of surviving larvae, rather than recruitment, since emergence and oviposition were not going on during the course of the experiments. The enhanced survivorship of larvae within leech-free enclosures was eventually accompanied by reduced growth and specific production (daily production/biomass) for C. riparius, which made up about 90% of the larval population. Growth and specific production of G. paripes (10% of larval population) was not affected. Short-term experiments (25 d) involving manipulation of densities and species ratio (9:1 CR:GP and 1:9 CR:GP) of larvae revealed that growth of the majority species was strongly influenced by larval density, whereas growth of the minority species was not. The same pattern was observed both in the presence and in the absence of Nephelopsis and was a result of differences in resource utilization between the two species. In the shortterm experiments, growth rates estimated for larvae exposed to leeches were significantly less than those for larvae in leech-free enclosures. This could be due either to size-biased consumption of larvae by Nephelopsis, or possibly a disturbance factor leading to reduced larval food intake and/or increased metabolic costs.  相似文献

The diet of brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) and rainbow trout (S. gairdneri Richardson) in Rutland Water were compared during the first two fishing seasons (April–October 1977 and 1978).Fortnightly samples of approximately forty stomachs were obtained from boat and bank, rod-and-line caught trout giving a total of 1046 stomachs over the two seasons.During 1977 seasonal changes in the diet were divided into two phases; the first being a period of abundant drowned terrestrial food until June. This was followed by a period of more stable water level from July onwards when chironomid larvae and pupae were consistently the most important food items and the diversity of food also increased. In 1978 the proportion of chironomid pupae and larvae declined and they were replaced in the diet by Gammarus and Asellus.  相似文献

In the littoral zones of lakes, aquatic macrophytes produce considerable structural variation that can provide protection to prey communities by hindering predator foraging activity. The swimming and feeding behaviour of a planktivore, Pseudorasbora parva(Cyprinidae) on its prey (Daphnia pulex) was studied in a series of laboratory experiments with varying densities (0, 350, 700, 1400, 2100 and 2800 stems m–2) of simulated submerged vegetation. Prey availability was varied from 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 5.0, 10.0 and 25.0 prey l–1. As the stem density increased, the predator's swimming speed and the number of prey captured decreased relative to feeding in open water. A good relation existed between the number of successful prey captures and swimming speed with the average stem distance to fish body length ratio (D). An abrupt reduction in feeding and swimming was recorded when D was reduced to values less than one.  相似文献
