Persistence of forage grasses is enhanced through the deliberate and selective use of symbiotic fungal endophytes that confer benefits, particularly pest resistance. However, they have also been implicated in reduced plant community diversity as a result of directly or indirectly enhancing competitive ability. A relatively underexplored mechanism by which endophytes might influence pasture plant composition is by altering the biotic or abiotic soil conditions. To examine the soil conditioning effects of forage grass species and their fungal symbionts we tested the responses of three pasture plants, perennial ryegrass, prairie grass, and white clover in nine different soils that had been conditioned by monocultures of endophyte-containing (E+), or endophyte-free (E?), perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, or meadow fescue. Conditioning grass species had little effect on the responses of perennial ryegrass and prairie grass regardless of E+ or E? treatments. In contrast, conditioning species had a strong effect on the response of white clover, resulting in reduced biomass when grown in perennial ryegrass conditioned soils. The presence of endophyte also had significant growth consequences for white clover, but was either positive or negative depending on the conditioning grass species. In comparison to their respective E? treatments, E+ tall and meadow fescue conditioned soils resulted in reduced biomass of white clover, whereas E+ perennial ryegrass conditioned soils resulted in increased biomass of white clover. Among the conditioning strains (AR1, AR37, NEA2, WE) of E+ perennial ryegrass, white clover showed significantly different responses, but all responses were positive in comparison to the E? treatment. By examining the effects of several grass species and endophyte strains, we were able to determine the relative importance of grass species vs. fungal symbiont on soil conditioning. Overall, the conditioning effect of grass species was stronger than the effects associated with endophyte, particularly with regard to the response of white clover. We conclude that both grass species and their fungal endophytes can influence pasture plant community composition through plant–soil feedback.  相似文献

Effects of time of initial cut and subsequent cutting interval(1, 2 or 4 weeks) were examined in a glasshouse during summer1988 for reproductive plants of three prairie grass cultivars(Bromus willdenowii Kunth), Westerwolds ryegrass (Lolium multiflorumLam.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Measurementswere made of tiller and leaf numbers, sites of tillering, reproductivedevelopment, and herbage quality and yields. Effect of timeof initial cutting on regrowth appeared to be independent ofstage of reproductive development and unrelated to any of themeasured plant parameters. Characteristics for each cultivaras identified during undisturbed growth prior to the initialcuts, were modified by the subsequent cutting frequencies. Perennial ryegrass had the highest yields under frequent cuttingwith high herbage quality. Westenwolds ryegrass and the prairiegrass cultivars ‘Grasslands Matua’ and ‘Primabel’had the highest yields with infrequent cutting, but lower herbagequality than in perennial ryegrass. At each cut, tiller deathin prairie grass was determined by the number of reproductivetillers, and in the ryegrasses also by the numbers of elongatedvegetative tillers. Recovery of tiller numbers was rapid andprimarily from inhibited tiller buds at the base of reproductivetillers. In prairie grass, tiller numbers were relatively unaffectedby cutting frequency, but at frequent cutting, many axillarytillers originated from vegetative tillers rather than frominhibited tiller buds at the base of reproductive tillers. The influence of natural plant odours on the locomotory behaviour of 3rd‐instar larvae of Costelytra zealandica (White) was studied by observing their movement in glass‐sided test chambers. Through an analysis of the paths followed by individual larvae in single‐option choice‐chamber tests it was possible to evaluate the responses of the larvae to different plant materials. The odour of fresh young perennial ryegrass (Loliumperenne) root was more attractive to the insects than was that of older plants. Larvae were also more strongly attracted to the root of lucerne (Medicago sativa), Lotus pedunculatus, red clover (Trifolium pratense), and white clover (T. repens) than to that of perennial ryegrass. The possible role of volatile chemical factors in plant resistance to grass grub attack is discussed.  相似文献

The aim of this meta-analysis was to compare feed intake, milk production, milk composition and organic matter (OM) digestibility in dairy cows fed different grass and legume species. Data from the literature was collected and different data sets were made to compare families (grasses v. legumes, Data set 1), different legume species and grass family (Data set 2), and different grass and legume species (Data set 3+4). The first three data sets included diets where single species or family were fed as the sole forage, whereas the approach in the last data set differed by taking the proportion of single species in the forage part into account allowing diets consisting of both grasses and legumes to be included. The grass species included were perennial ryegrass, annual ryegrass, orchardgrass, timothy, meadow fescue, tall fescue and festulolium, and the legume species included were white clover, red clover, lucerne and birdsfoot trefoil. Overall, dry matter intake (DMI) and milk production were 1.3 and 1.6 kg/day higher, respectively, whereas milk protein and milk fat concentration were 0.5 and 1.4 g/kg lower, respectively, for legume-based diets compared with grass-based diets. When comparing individual legume species with grasses, only red clover resulted in a lower milk protein concentration than grasses. Cows fed white clover and birdsfoot trefoil yielded more milk than cows fed red clover and lucerne, probably caused by a higher OM digestibility of white clover and activity of condensed tannins in birdsfoot trefoil. None of the included grass species differed in DMI, milk production, milk composition or OM digestibility, indicating that different grass species have the same value for milk production, if OM digestibility is comparable. However, the comparison of different grass species relied on few observations, indicating that knowledge regarding feed intake and milk production potential of different grass species is scarce in the literature. In conclusion, different species within family similar in OM digestibility resulted in comparable DMI and milk production, but legumes increased both DMI and milk yield compared with grasses.  相似文献

To increase our insight into the above- and belowground N flows in grass and grass-clover swards relations between crop and soil parameters were studied in a cutting trial with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) monocultures and ryegrass–white clover (Trifolium repens) mixtures. The effects of clover cultivar on herbage yield, the amount of clover-derived nitrogen, apparent N transfer to companion grass, dynamics of N and organic matter in the soil were estimated. The grass monocultures had very low DM yields (<2.1 t ha-1) and a low N concentration in the harvested herbage. During 1992–1995 the annual herbage DM yield in the mixtures ranged from 7.0 to 14.3 t ha-1, the white clover DM yield from 2.4 to 11.2 t ha-1 and the mean annual clover content in the herbage DM harvested from 34 to 78%. Mixtures with the large-leaved clover cv. Alice yielded significantly more herbage and clover DM and had a higher clover content than mixtures with small/medium-leaved cvs. Gwenda and Retor. Grass cultivar did not consistently affect yield, botanical composition or soil characteristics. The apparent N2 fixation was very high, ranging from 150 to 545 kg N ha-1 in the different mixtures. For each tonne of clover DM in the harvested herbage 49 to 63 kg N was harvested, while the apparent N transfer from clover to grass varied between 55 and 113 kg N ha-1 year-1.The net N mineralization rate was lower under monocultures than under mixtures. The C mineralization and the amounts of C and N in active soil organic matter fractions were similar for monocultures and mixtures, but the C:N ratio of the active soil organic matter fractions were higher under grass than under mixtures. This explains the lower N mineralization under grass.  相似文献

The apparent transfer of N from clover to associated grass was evaluated over a four year period both on the basis of harvested herbage and by taking account of changes in N in stubble and root (to 10 cm depth) in swards with perennial ryegrass and three different white clover cultivars differing in leaf size. The large leaved Aran transferred 15% of its nitrogen while Huia transferred 24% and the small leaved Kent Wild White transferred 34%. When changes in stubble and root N were taken into account the percentage of N transferred was calculated to be 5% less than in harvested herbage only, as the small leaved types had proportionately more N in the roots and stolons, but the large leaved type was probably more competitive towards the grass.Loss of N from clover roots from July to October was compared to that from grass roots in a grass/white clover sward continuously stocked with steers using a method which incorporated tissue turnover and 15N dilution techniques. Less than 1 mg N m-2 d-1 was lost from the grass roots. In contrast 8 mg m-2 d-1 were estimated to be lost from clover roots while 12 mg N m-2 d-1 were assimilated. It is concluded that clover cultivar and competitive ability on grass have to be taken into account together with the relationship between N turnover in roots and N available for grass growth when modelling N transfer in grass/clover associations.  相似文献

Abstract

Crude root extracts of the black beetle-resistant legumes red clover, white clover, lupin, Lotus pedunculatus, and lucerne significantly reduced feeding by 3rd-instar black beetle larvae when incorporated in an artificial medium containing a strong feeding stimulant. The same extracts were toxic when administered orally. Lucerne and L. pedunculatus contain particularly active feeding deterrents and toxins. The root of the black beetle-resistant grass Phalaris aquatica (= P. tuberosa), like that of the susceptible perennial ryegrass, had no effect on larval feeding or survival. Lotus pedunculatus was very much more active against black beetle larvae than L. corniculatus or L. corniculatus × pedunculatus.  相似文献

The degree of plant root digestion by grass grubs (Costelytra zealandica) has been evaluated by scanning electron microscope examination of plant residues in faeces. Faecal pellets were examined from grubs fed on roots of pure plant species (perennial ryegrass, Lolium perenne, and white clover, Trifolium repens) under soil-free conditions, as well as from naturally occurring grubs on mixed pasture. There was considerable variation in the degree of digestion observed with different plant species. Clover root was more extensively digested with formation of partially digested xylem vessels, whereas ryegrass root appeared to undergo very little digestive breakdown. These results indicate that plant structural carbohydrates undergo limited digestion by the grass grub. Thus grass grubs may require a high turnover of dietary root material, which would explain the highly destructive effect of the larvae on pasture plants.  相似文献

The benefits of using white clover in pastures have been widely recognised for many years. However, clover is perceived as being unreliable because of its typically low content, which is spatially and temporally variable, in mixed pastures. One proposed solution to increase the proportion of clover in the diet of grazing animals and composition in the pasture is to spatially separate clover from grass within the same field. In a field experiment ryegrass and white clover were grown in fine mixtures, and in pure alternating strips of ryegrass and clover of 1.5 m, 3 m or 18 m width within a field. Pastures were grazed for two grazing periods of 9 and 12 weeks, and measurements of sward surface height (SSH), herbage mass and composition and clover morphology were taken. Grazing behaviour was also observed. Results showed that spatial separation in the long term, when compared with a fine mixture, increased clover availability (18% to 30% v. 9%, based on standing dry matter) and was not grazed to extinction. Ewes maintained their preference for clover throughout the experiment (selection coefficient 2 to 5), which resulted in a reduction in the SSH of clover in monocultures to <3 cm and significant changes to the morphology of clover (smaller leaves, shorter petioles and thicker stolon), at the expense of maximising their intake. Spatial separation in the short term may therefore allow grazing animals to select their preferred diet; however, in the long term in continuously grazed pasture, their preference for clover depletes its availability.  相似文献

For pastures, root turnover can have an important influence on nutrient and carbon cycling, and plant performance. Turnover was calculated from mini‐rhizotron observations for chicory (Cichorium intybus), lucerne (Medicago sativa), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and white clover (Trifolium repens) grown in the Manawatu, New Zealand. The species were combined factorially with four earthworm species treatments and a no‐earthworm control. Split plots compared the effects of not cutting and cutting the shoots at intervals. Observations were made c. 18 days apart for 2.5 years. This article concentrates on differences between plant species in root turnover in the whole soil profile to 40 cm depth. At this scale, earthworm effects were generally small and short lived. For ryegrass and white clover, root length and mass were linearly related (R2 = 0.82–0.99). For chicory and lucerne, the relationships were poorer (R2 = 0.38–0.77), so for those species length turnover may be a poor indicator of mass turnover. Standing root length, total growth and death generally decreased in the sequence ryegrass > lucerne > chicory = white clover. In length terms, scaled turnover (growth divided by average standing root length) generally followed the sequence lucerne > white clover > perennial ryegrass = chicory. Across species the scaled turnover rate averaged 3.4 per year or 0.9% per day. Cutting shoots reduced standing root length, growth and death, but increased scaled turnover. These results indicate fast and prolonged root turnover. For ryegrass and white clover, at least there is need to reappraise how to measure and model shoot : root ratios, dry matter production and carbon cycling.  相似文献

The effects of root feeding by larvae of Sitona hispidulus (F.) (a common weevil pest of white clover) on the rate of transfer of nitrogen between plants of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) were investigated using a nutrient slant board technique. Clover plants, labelled with 15N were grown adjacent to ryegrass plants and were either infested with Sitona larvae or not infested. Ryegrass plants associated with the infested clover plants had a significantly higher dry matter yield and nitrogen content (75% and 74% respectively) than the uninvested plants, after 33 days exposure to insect herbivory. It was concluded that root feeding insects could play an important role in the cycling of nitrogen in grass/clover swards.  相似文献

The temporal N-uptake patterns of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) mixed with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) mixed with Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) were determined in successive harvests of herbage within the growth cycles of a ley established near Zürich (Switzerland). Rooting patterns were examined by injecting15N-fertilizer at soil depths ranging from 10 to 40 cm. The results were analyzed to determine the effect of variations in time and depth of N-uptake on the15N-based measurement of N from symbiosis (Nsym) and N from transfer (Ntrans).Grasses in mixture appeared to have deeper rooting systems than grass monocultures, which led to an overestimation of N transfer from white clover to perennial ryegrass if15N was spread on the soil surface.White clover generally lagged behind grass in soil N- uptake. Soil N-uptake of red clover slowed down before that of the grass because % Nsym almost reached 100% during the second half of each growth cycle. However, the effect of these dissimilarities on the seasonal average of %Nsym did not exceed 2%.It is concluded that at the observed high levels of N2 fixation, failure to account for the N-uptake patterns of the test and reference crops only slightly affected the estimates of % Nsym and % Ntrans, and did not invalidate the observed differences between species.  相似文献

The short-term effects of a simulated cattle dung pat on N2 fixation and total uptake of N in a perennial ryegrass/white clover mixture was studied in a container experiment using sheep faeces mixed with water to a DM content of 13%. We used a new 15N cross-labelling technique to determine the influence of dung-pat N on N2 fixation in a grass/clover mixture and the uptake of dung N in grass and clover. The proportion of N in clover derived from N2 fixation (%Ndfa) varied between 88–99% during the 16 weeks following application of the dung. There was no effect of dung on the %Ndfa in clover grown in mixture, whereas the %Ndfa in clover grown in pure stand decreased (nominal 2–3%) after dung application. Dung did not influence the amount of N2 fixed, and the uptake of dung N in grass and clover proceeded at an almost constant rate. After 16 weeks, 10% of the applied dung N was taken up by grass and clover, 57% had been incorporated in the soil by faunal activity and 27% remained in residual dung on the soil surface. The dung N unaccounted for (7%) was probably lost by ammonia volatilisation and denitrification. The uptake of dung N in grass/clover mixtures in the field was similarly followed by using simulated 15N-labelled dung pats. The total dry matter production and N yields increased in the 0–30 cm distance from the edge of the dung patch, but the proportion of clover decreased. Thirteen months after application of the dung 4% of the applied dung N was recovered in the harvested herbage, 78% was recovered from the soil and the residual dung, and 18% was not accounted for. It is concluded that N2 fixation in the dung patch border area in grass/clover mixtures is not influenced directly by the release of N from dung pats in the short term. However the amount of N2 fixed may be reduced, if the growth of clover is reduced in the patch border area.  相似文献

Mixing the ryegrass mosaic virus (RMV) resistant perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) cv. Endura with the susceptible Italian ryegrass (L. multiflorum) cv. RvP decreased infection of RvP wth RMV from 37% when grown alone to 22% when mixed. However, Endura yielded less than RvP and there was no yield benefit from mixing the two cultivars. Mixing red clover (Trifolium pratense) cv. Hungaropoly with RvP had no detectable effect on RMV incidence in RvP but did decrease the incidence of red clover necrotic mosaic virus in Hungaropoly from 9% to 1% and of white clover mosaic virus from 53-5% to 41%. The yield of the mixture was equal to that of RvP grown alone but given nitrogen fertiliser. The numbers of eriophyid mites, including Abacarus hystrix the vector of RMV, on ryegrass leaves were similar in pure and mixed swards. It is concluded that with herbage crops, the common practice of sowing mixtures of species may help control virus diseases.  相似文献

A grazing experiment was carried out to study the concentration of phyto-oestrogens in herbage for cattle and in milk during two periods (May and June). Forty-eight Danish Holstein cows were divided into four groups with four treatment diets; white clover, red clover, lucerne and chicory-rich pastures. Each experimental period lasted 15 days. Herbage samples from the first day and individual milk samples from the last day of the experimental period were analysed for phyto-oestrogens using LC-MS technique. The total concentration of phyto-oestrogens was 21 399 mg/kg dry matter (DM) for red clover and 238 to 466 mg/kg DM for the other three herbages mainly due to a much higher concentration of biochanin A, formononetin and glycitein in red clover. In the milk, the total concentration of phyto-oestrogens was 253 to 397 μg/l for red clover milk and 56 to 91 μg/l in the milk from the other three treatments. This was especially due to a higher concentration of equol, daidzein and formononetin in the red clover milk. The concentration of biochanin A was significantly higher in milk from the red clover treatment in May while no differences were observed in June. Enterodiol was similar across treatments while the concentration of enterolactone was significantly lower for red clover milk compared with the other treatments. Of the tested pastures, red clover appears to have the highest concentration and to be the best source of phyto-oestrogens, especially equol, in bovine milk.  相似文献

Pasture swards containing perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) alone or with one of five different white clover (Trifolium repens L.) cultivars were examined for production and transfer of fixed nitrogen (N) to grass under dairy cow grazing. Grass-only swards produced 21% less than mixed clover-grass swards during the second year after sowing. Production from grass-only plots under a mowing and clipping removal regime was 44% less than from grass-only plots under grazing. Much of this difference could be attributed to N transfer. In swards without clover, the ryegrass component also decreased in favour of other grasses. The average amount of fixed N in herbage from all clover cultivars was 269 kg N ha–1 yr–1. Above-ground transfer of fixed N to grasses (via cow excreta) was estimated at 60 kg N ha–1 yr–1. Below-ground transfer of fixed N to grasses was estimated at 70 kg N ha–1 yr–1 by 15N dilution and was similar for all clover cultivars. Thus, about 50% of grass N was met by transfer of fixed N from white clover during the measurement year. Short-term measurements using a 15N foliar-labelling method indicated that below-ground N transfer was largest during dry summer conditions.  相似文献

Male Beulah speckled face lambs (initial live weight (LW) 28.8 ± 0.31 kg) were allocated to three dietary treatments to evaluate the performance of store lambs of a hill breed when offered ensiled lucerne (Medicago sativa), red clover (Trifolium pratense) or ryegrass. Second-cut silage bales (wilted and inoculated) were prepared from 3-year old lucerne and red clover stands and a 1-year old ryegrass sward. All the lambs were group-housed and offered ad libitum ryegrass silage during a 3-week co-variate period. This was followed by a week of dietary changeover period, after which the lambs were housed individually and offered their treatment diet ad libitum. All the lambs received a flat rate supplement of pelleted molassed sugarbeet (250 g fresh weight/day). Individual intakes were determined daily, and weekly measurements of LW and body condition score (CS) were made. Additional measurements were taken by scanning the lambs for depth of Longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle and subcutaneous fat. Over an experimental period of 7 weeks, the lambs offered red clover silage had a higher voluntary silage dry matter (DM) intake, total DM intake and metabolisable energy (ME) intake (P < 0.001) than lambs offered either lucerne or ryegrass silage. This resulted in a faster (P < 0.001) growth rate and increase (P < 0.001) in CS, with no difference between lucerne and ryegrass silages. The feed conversion efficiency (FCE) was 8.0 ± 0.61 kg feed/kg gain for lambs fed red clover silage, compared with 16.6 ± 2.82 and 10.6 ± 1.94 kg feed/kg gain for lucerne and ryegrass silage, respectively. The CP intake was higher (P < 0.001) for lambs fed the lucerne and red clover silages than for the ryegrass silage treatment. The concentration of plasma total protein (TP) was higher (P < 0.05) for lambs offered ryegrass silage versus lucerne and red clover silage. Urea concentrations were highest for lambs fed lucerne silage and lowest for those fed ryegrass silage (P < 0.05). The glucose concentration was higher (P < 0.05) for lambs offered red clover silage, whereas non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) concentration was higher (P < 0.05) for lambs offered lucerne silage. Substituting ryegrass silage with red clover silage has the potential to improve the performance of finishing store lambs.  相似文献

The majority of New Zealand dairy goat farmers utilise cultivated green-fed fodder dominated by perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.), but evidence from other ruminant species suggests that milk production may be improved when using a more diverse array of species within the green fodder. The aim of this experiment was to determine whether feeding lactating dairy goats a mixed-species green fodder (MF, consisting of perennial ryegrass, timothy (Phleum pratense L.), prairie grass (Bromus willdenowii Kunth), white clover, red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), lucerne (Medicago sativa L.), chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) and plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) improves dietary intake, milk yield and composition compared with a standard ryegrass and white clover green fodder (SF). Thirty-six mid-lactation goats were housed indoors in pairs and split into two groups (A and B). The trial was split into three periods – firstly a uniformity period of 6 days, in which all goats were fed a combination of both green fodder types, followed by two treatment periods (P1 and P2) of 12 days, respectively. For P1, group A was fed MF and group B was fed SF, and then the group diets were switched for P2. Goats fed MF had 13% greater dry matter intake and 7% greater milk yield than goats fed SF. In addition, the milk protein and fat concentration of goats fed MF were 4% greater than for those fed SF, whereas there was no effect on milk lactose concentration. There was no treatment effect on the levels of protein, glucose, urea or non-esterified fatty acids in the blood of the goats. An effect of green fodder type on milk fat profile was demonstrated, with proportions of pentadecylic acid (C15:0), cis-vaccenic acid (C18:1 c11), linoleic acid (C18:2 n6) and α-linolenic acid (C18:3 n3) being increased in response to MF consumption. In contrast, iso-C15 and iso-C17 proportions were lesser. In summary, this study demonstrated that goats fed MF increased green fodder intake and milk production compared with goats fed SF. The green fodder type affected the fatty acid profile of goat’s milk, with MF increasing the levels of beneficial polyunsaturated omega fatty acids (linoleic and α-linolenic acids).  相似文献
