The role of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, pod trichomes on feeding by adult bean leaf beetles. Cerotoma trifurcata (Forster), was evaluated under laboratory and field conditions during 1997 and 1998. Three Clark isolines and 'Corsoy 79' were used to compare the feeding preference of the beetle on pods with different trichome densities. The three Clark isolines, including densely pubescent, sparsely pubescent, and glabrous, were isogenic except for trichome density. The trichome densities on the pods of Clark densely pubescent, Clark sparsely pubescent, and Corsoy 79 were significantly different. In no-choice tests, under both laboratory and field conditions, the feeding on pods of Clark densely pubescent was significantly lower than that on the other isolines. In the choice test of Corsoy 79 conducted in the laboratory and field, when the trichomes on one of the two pods were shaven off, the feeding on the shaven pods was significantly higher than that of the intact ones. In the choice test among Clark isolines under laboratory condition, the result was significant, with the lowest feeding on the densely pubescent pods. This study demonstrates that densely pubescent soybean has the potential to resist bean leaf beetle feeding on pods.  相似文献

Quantitative variation for leaf trichome number is observed within and among Gossypium species, varying from glabrous to densely pubescent phenotypes. Moreover, economically important cotton lint fibers are modified trichomes. Earlier studies have mapped quantitative trait loci (QTLs) affecting leaf pubescence in Gossypium using allotetraploids. In this study, we mapped genes responsible for leaf trichome density in a diploid A genome cross. We were able to map 3 QTLs affecting leaf pubescence based on trichome counts obtained from young leaves (YL) and mature leaves (ML). When the F(2) progeny were classified as pubescent versus glabrous, their ratio did not deviate significantly from a 3:1 model, suggesting that glabrousness is inherited in a simple Mendelian fashion. The glabrous mutation mapped to linkage group A3 at the position of major QTL YL1 and ML1 and appeared orthologous to the t1 locus of the allotetraploids. Interestingly, a fiber mutation, sma-4(ha), observed in the same F(2) population cosegregated with the glabrous marker, which indicates either close linkage or common genetic control of lint fiber and leaf trichomes. Studies of A genome diploids may help to clarify the genetic control of trichomes and fiber in both diploid and tetraploid cottons.  相似文献

Abstract Tritrophic interaction in soybean system has received increasing attention recently. However, few studies have investigated the influence of plant trichomes on the population dynamics of soybean herbivores and their natural enemies. We conducted a field survey to investigate whether soybean trichomes affected the abundance of herbivores and their predators. The results of this study show that moderately or densely pubescent trichomes have positive influences on the abundance of some herbivores (e.g., Stollia guttiger) and predators (e.g., Propylaea japonica and Orius similes) although the influence may change over time, while trichome types do not affect the density of soybean aphid, Aphis glycines.  相似文献

Morphological defense traits of plants such as trichomes potentially compromise biological control in agroecosystems because they may hinder predation by natural enemies. To investigate whether plant trichomes hinder red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), as biological control agents in soybean, field and greenhouse experiments were conducted in which we manipulated fire ant density in plots of three soybean isolines varying in trichome density. Resulting treatment effects on the abundance of herbivores, other natural enemies, plant herbivory, and yield were assessed. Trichomes did not inhibit fire ants from foraging on plants in the field or in the greenhouse, and fire ant predation of herbivores in the field was actually greater on pubescent plants relative to glabrous plants. Consequently, fire ants more strongly reduced plant damage by herbivores on pubescent plants. This effect, however, did not translate into greater yield from pubescent plants at high fire ant densities. Intraguild predation by fire ants, in contrast, was weak, inconsistent, and did not vary with trichome density. Rather than hindering fire ant predation, therefore, soybean trichomes instead increased fire ant predation of herbivores resulting in enhanced tritrophic effects of fire ants on pubescent plants. This effect was likely the result of a functional response by fire ants to the greater abundance of caterpillar prey on pubescent plants. Given the ubiquity of lepidopteran herbivores and the functional response to prey shown by many generalist arthropod predators, a positive indirect effect of trichomes on predation by natural enemies might be more far more common than is currently appreciated.  相似文献

A technique was developed and deployed in central Illinois to trap and assay aphid alatae for incidence of soybean mosaic virus (SMV) transmission among naturally occurring transient aphid populations downwind of a field of infected soybean. In a 2-yr study, 1709 alate aphids were trapped alive and assayed, 4.2% of which transmitted SMV. Five species of aphids accounted for more than 93% of the transmissions: Aphis craccivora Koch, Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas), Myzus persicae (Sulzer), Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch), and Rhopalosiphum padi (L.). At least 55 additional species were assayed, five of which transmitted only once. Others did not transmit. Because virus infection during the early growth stages of soybean increases the loss of yield and the percentage of seed-borne virus, vector species that tend to fly middle to late spring are, from an economic point of view, more important in the spread of SMV. R. maidis flew in mid- to late summer and in autumn. R. padi was not abundant at any time of year and its transmission efficiency was low. M. persicae tended to fly in mid summer. Two species (A. craccivora and M. euphorbiae) which had major flights in late spring and early summer and relatively high transmission efficiencies are potentially important in the economic spread of SMV in central Illinois. A third species, Aphis citricola Van der Goot, may also be important because it flies in late spring and laboratory data suggest it is a relatively efficient vector of SMV. A. citricola was not assayed by our technique because we trapped in the morning and this species appears to fly later in the day.  相似文献

Leaf pubescence in cotton have a potential for insect pest management. Varying degrees of leaf trichome density in Gossypium species and cultivars have been associated to a series of five genes, referred to as t(1)-t(5). We used two segregating interspecific G. hirsutum x G. barbadense backcross populations developed in our laboratory to assess qualitatively and quantitatively leaf and stem pubescence. QTL analyses were performed using simple and composite interval mapping. Based on both types of measurements and under both types of QTL analyses, nine QTLs met permutation-based thresholds. The nine QTLs mapped to four different chromosome regions. Highest LOD values corresponded to the QTLs detected on c6 (four colocalized QTLs) and on D03 (two QTLs) for which the higher pubescence in the progeny derived from the pubescent G. hirsutum parent alleles. Conversely, on c17 (one QTL) and A01 (two QTLs), the G. hirsutum parental alleles affected negatively pubescence. These results combined with another published study confirm (1) the location in a center region of chromosome 6 of the t(1) locus as a major locus/gene determining leaf pubescence, and (2) additional genes located on seven additional chromosomes have been shown to impart trichome density either positively or negatively. The existence of a high density of PCR-based loci in most of the regions identified as harboring leaf pubescence QTLs, particularly that on chromosome 6, will facilitate future efforts for map-based cloning.  相似文献

Patterns of spread of two aphid borne viruses, the non-persistently transmitted bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) and the persistently transmitted subterranean clover red leaf virus (SCRLV), were compared simultaneously in field plots of Vicia faba minor grown in a Mediterranean climate (winter-spring growing season, and dry summer). Spread from a primary source was mapped following the artificial introduction of virus alone, or virus with vector, at the centre of the plots. BYMV spread rapidly from the virus source whether or not vectors were introduced with the virus. By contrast, SCRLV spread from the source only when plants were also artificially infested with the vector Aulacorthum solani. An attempt was made to evaluate the importance of secondary spread of both viruses by assessing the degree of clumping of infected plants that occurred outside the primary sites of virus introduction. BYMV-infected plants were clumped in each treatment irrespective of whether the virus was introduced alone or with vector, as well as in control plots. Clumping of SCRLV occurred only when the vectors were introduced on virus source plants at the beginning of the experiment. Times of spread were determined both by exposing trap plants at 4-weekly intervals throughout the 30 month trial period, and by analysing the rates of spread in experimental plots between June and November in one growing season. Both viruses spread in the spring when vectors were flying, but negligible spread of the viruses was observed in the autumn despite aphid flight activity. Times of flight of the four main aphid vector species were continuously monitored with yellow water traps. A major spring and a minor autumn flight peak were observed for Aphis craccivora, Macrosiphum euphorbiae, Aulacorthum solani and Myzus persicae. Aphid flights occurred predominantly in weeks when the mean temperature was in the range 13–17°C. Rainfall above 7 mm per week appeared to affect flights only when mean weekly temperatures were outside the range 13–17°C.  相似文献

A derivative, prepared from the aphid alarm pheromone (E)-β-farnesene and the saturated straight 14-carbon chain dialkyl ester of acetylene dicarboxylic acid, was the most active compound tested for inhibiting acquisition by the aphid Myzus persicae of the non-persistently transmitted potato virus Y (PVY). Derivatives lacking, or with shorter, or branched or partially-unsaturated carbon side-chains were less active. The one derivative tested also inhibited inoculation of PVY, and acquisition of beet mosaic virus (also non-persistent) and the semi-persistent beet yellows virus. However, it had no obvious effect on aphid probing behaviour; related compounds lacking the (E)-β-farnesene moiety also inhibited acquisition of PVY.  相似文献

Using standard diversity indices, samples of aphids collected on a vertical net were found to be more diverse than collections from green pan traps in experiments conducted in Nanjing, China in 1981. Some species, notably Myzuspersicae, Aphis citricola, and Eriosoma (Schizoneura) japonicum, were collected in greater relative numbers in the pan traps. Several species, including the Macrosiphoniella spp., were under-represented in the green pan traps presumably because they were not attracted to the green colour of the traps. Yellow pan traps, used concurrently to monitor landing rates of economic species, caught relatively more Aphis craccivora and M. persicae and relatively fewer Aphis gossypii than green ones. In the Nanjing area soybean mosaic virus (SMV) usually spreads in spring planted soybeans during the latter half of May, causing damage. The predominant aphid species trapped at that time were M. persicae, Lipaphis erysimi, A. gossypii, A. craccivora and E. japonicum, of which the first four are known vectors. Summer planted soybeans are usually affected during a second period of virus spread occurring in mid-August when various Aphis spp. are abundant. The predominant vector of SMV at that time was thought to be Aphis glycines which colonises the crop; in 1981, however, A. citricola and A. gossypii, which do not colonise soybean and A. craccivora. which rarely colonises soybean, were much more abundant in mid-August than A. glycines. A. citricola, A. gossypii and A. craccivora are all able to transmit SMV, and thus should be considered as potentially important vectors. In infectivity assays, only four of 1040 aphids transmitted SMV. These included an A. craccivora, two Toxoptera citricidus and one Aphis sp.  相似文献

Viral diseases non-persistently transmitted by aphids are of great economic importance in several annual crops. Transmission efficiency of these non-persistent phytoviruses is dependant on vector efficiency (i.e. vector intrinsic ability to transmit the virus) but also on the vector activity that implies the early steps of aphid host plant selection process (i.e. brief intracellular stylet punctures after landing) and to their interplant movement ability. In Europe, Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas 1878) is considered as one of the most serious virus vectors on potato (Solanum tuberosum L. 1753). Nevertheless, several alate aphid species that do not colonise potato plants are trapped in potato crops. Therefore, we investigated, through laboratory experiments, vector activity of one potato colonising aphid, M. euphorbiae, and two non-colonising potato aphids, the bird cherry-oat aphid Rhopalosiphum padi (L. 1758) and the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris 1776). A settling experiment was used to evaluate dispersal activity, and the electrical penetration graph (EPG) technique was used to investigate probing activity on potato plants. Results showed that M. euphorbiae exhibited a better vector activity than other two aphid species in terms of landing and probing. By contrast, interplant movements were only recorded on non-colonising aphids, suggesting a better vector activity than M. euphorbiae in terms of locomotive behaviour. These data confirm the involvement of A. pisum and R. padi in the spread of non-persistent viruses.  相似文献

The morphology of host-specific Old World Uroleucon (Homoptera: Aphididae) species is related to features of their host plant species (Asteraceae and Campanulaceae) by canonical correlation analysis. Aphid species on pubescent host species have longer rostra and shorter hind tarsi, adaptations for feeding and walking on hirsute surfaces. Also, aphid species on taller hosts are larger. The positive relationship between rostrum length and host trichome density is further supported by simple regression analyses on two species complexes. Regression parameters differ between groups, suggesting different responses to different trichome types. This morphological adaptation involves characters used extensively by taxonomists and could result in convergence obscuring phylogenetic relationships of herbivore taxa and, particularly, the relation of herbivore phylogeny to host phylogeny.  相似文献

Leaf pubescence mediates intraguild predation between predatory mites   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Plant morphological traits such as leaf pubescence may affect herbivores and their natural enemies at the individual, population and community levels. Leaf pubescence has been repeatedly shown to mediate predator‐herbivore interactions whereas the influence of leaf pubescence on predator–predator interactions such as intraguild predation (IGP) has seldom been investigated. Using a three‐pronged approach we assessed the influence of leaf pubescence on the predatory mites Kampimodromus aberrans and Euseius finlandicus. Both predators occur on broad‐leaved trees in Europe. Euseius finlandicus is mostly found on trees with glabrous leaves whereas K. aberrans mainly occurs on trees with pubescent leaves. We hypothesized that leaf pubescence mediates IGP between K. aberrans and E. finlandicus and thereby determines their dominance and proportional abundance. A field survey on apple revealed that the abundance of K. aberrans and E. finlandicus is negatively correlated, with the former predominating on cultivars with strongly pubescent leaves and the latter predominating on cultivars with little pubescent or glabrous leaves. Microhabitat choice tests showed that K. aberrans preferentially resides on pubescent leaves whereas E. finlandicus preferentially resides on glabrous leaves. The effects of leaf pubescence on survival and development of immature IG predators and IG prey were reversed for K. aberrans and E. finlandicus. In the presence of the IG predator E. finlandicus, immature K. aberrans had higher survival probabilities on pubescent leaves than on glabrous ones. In contrast, the survival chances of immature E. finlandicus were higher on glabrous leaves than on pubescent ones when the IG predator K. aberrans was present. Artificial leaf pubescence enhanced IG prey capture by immature K. aberrans and prolonged their longevity but impaired IG prey capture by immature E. finlandicus and shortened their longevity. We conclude that leaf pubescence mediates IGP strength and symmetry and discuss the implications to natural and biological control.  相似文献

Density of leaf trichomes in Salix borealis affected both the choice of individual host plants and feeding behaviour of adults and last instar larvae of the willow feeding leaf beetle, Melasoma lapponica. Beetles clearly preferred shaved disks to unshaved ones taken from the same leaf; this preference was highest in leaves of the most pubescent plants. High leaf pubescence explained the low preference for willow clones from the high density site in among-site preference trials; shaving significantly increased the consumption of these pubescent willow clones. In no-choice experiments, the food consumption by both adults and last instar larvae decreased with an increase in leaf pubescence. The time budget of adults did not depend on leaf pubescence of the host plants, however adults compelled to feed on highly pubescent plants changed their feeding sites twice as often as on less pubescent willow clones. Larvae feeding on highly pubescent plants spend moving three times as much time as larvae feeding on less pubescent plants. Combined with our earlier observations on the increase in leaf pubescence in the year(s) following defoliation, these data suggest that leaf hairiness may have contributed to the delayed induced resistance in S. borealis by disturbing the feeding behaviour of M. lapponica.  相似文献

Borrichia aborescens (L.) DC. is a salt‐tolerant perennial herb that is common on small islands in the central Bahamas. Two morphotypes are present: one with densely pubescent leaves and one with glabrous leaves. I conducted surveys in three archipelagos to document the geographical distribution of pubescence in this species and to infer the underlying mechanisms. B. aborescens was also grown from seed in a greenhouse. The pubescent form of B. aborescens was relatively more abundant on small islands than on nearby large ‘mainland’ islands. In two of the three archipelagoes, pubescence increased with distance on small islands. The pubescent form was relatively more abundant on small islands exposed to the open ocean compared to small islands that were protected by mainland islands or reefs on all sides. On a large mainland island, the pubescent form decreased in relative abundance inland from the coast. B. aborescens cultivated in a greenhouse revealed the effect of a genetic factor on the expression of pubescence. The observed patterns of variation are consistent with a physiological explanation for the adaptive benefit of pubescence. Trichomes may prevent physical blockage of the stomata by accumulation of salt in areas near breaking waves and salt spray.  相似文献

The I locus controls inhibition of anthocyanin accumulation in the epidermal cells of the soybean seed coat and affects abundance of PRP1, a proline-rich cell wall protein in the seed coat. Saline-soluble PRP1 is abundant in the developing seed coats of cultivar Richland (homozygous I, yellow), while it is significantly decreased in the pigmented isogenic mutant T157 (homozygous i, imperfect black). In this report, we examined soluble PRP1 in several cultivars containing alleles of the I locus which affect spatial distribution of pigmentation in the seed coat. We also characterized PRP1 in isolines with allelic variants of several other loci involved in seed coat pigmentation, including T and Im. The T gene is pleiotropic and affects both pubescence color and seed coat pigmentation and structure. Soluble PRP1 was abundant in the developing seed coats of lines with yellow seed (I or i i alleles) regardless of pubescence color, just as in Richland. Likewise, soluble PRP1 was decreased in pigmented seed coats (i k or i alleles) with grey (t) pubescence, as in T157. However, the total seed coat proteins were not extractable from pigmented seed coats with tawny pubescence (i, T genotypes) because they have proanthocyanidins that exhibit tannin properties. The dominant Im allele inhibits seed coat mottling (irregular patches of pigmentation) that occurs if plants are infected with soybean mosaic virus. PRP1 was 35 kDa in mottled (im) isolines and 34 kDa in non-mottled (Im) isolines. PRP2, which is expressed later in seed coat development and in the hypocotyl hooks of soybean seedlings, was also smaller in Im isolines. In summary, some of the anthocyanin mutations affect the quantity of soluble PRP1 polypeptides, while others correlate with structural changes in developmentally regulated proline-rich proteins.  相似文献

Summary The effects of inflorescence pubescence on floral temperatures and fecundity were examined in four species of Puya in the Ecuadorian Andes. These species span an elevational range from 1,980–4,000 m and comparisons among these species showed that pubescence production increases significantly with elevation. Flower temperatures of glabrous or slightly pubescent species of Puya from lower elevations closely tracked air temperature, while those of the pubescent páramo species did not. Pubescence removal experiments on Puya hamata, a páramo species, demonstrated that pubescence is an effective insulator, maintaining elevated flower temperatures. In Puya clava-herculis (also a páramo species) elevated flower temperatures were associated with higher seed set. Thus, the greater production of inflorescence pubescence in páramo species of Puya may be an important factor contributing to reproductive success in these higher elevation species.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Nutrient resource availability and host-plant foliar pubescence both influence arthropod food webs, but multifactor studies are needed to understand their interdependence and relative importance. Arthropods were sampled by clipping foliage from Metrosideros polymorpha (Myrtaceae) trees of pubescent, glabrous, and intermediate leaf forms on fertilised and unfertilised plots.
2. Fertilisation decreased leaf mass per area (LMA) but did not change the relative mass of pubescence within leaf morphological classes.
3. Fertilisation increased densities of individuals in four taxonomic orders, densities of individuals and species of all trophic levels, and the biomass of Collembola and Homoptera. Herbivore relative diversity (Shannon H ') also increased with fertilisation, but detritivore diversity declined due to increasing dominance of Salina celebensis (Schaeffer) (Collembola).
4. Detritivore density, driven again by S. celebensis , increased with decreasing leaf pubescence, but Heteroptera and Acari were most abundant on the intermediate pubescence class, and Psocoptera density and biomass increased with increasing pubescence. Trophic-level species density did not change with leaf morphological class, but relative diversity of all arthropods and of detritivores increased with increasing pubescence.
5. Both resource availability and leaf pubescence affected Metrosideros arthropod communities. However, the pervasive positive influence of fertilisation did not translate to compositional shifts, and there were no interactions with leaf morphological class. In contrast, the effects of leaf pubescence on arthropod density, biomass, and diversity were more restricted taxonomically, and non-parametric manova and redundancy analyses demonstrated significant differentiation in community composition on the pubescent morphology.  相似文献

The stems of the ant-plant, Endospermum labios Schodde, serve as colonization sites for the ant, Camponotus quadriceps F. Smith. They are also subject to damage by insect borers. We sampled young E. labios trees in distutbed forest to compare evidence of stem boring insect and stem miner damage in plants with and without colonies of C. quadriceps. Dissections of a subsample of plants showed that dipteran stem borers and stem miner damage were significantly more common in plants lacking C, quadriceps colonies than in plants with established colonies. Evidence from these dissections and from field counts of meristem damage caused by emerging borers suggested that coleopteran stem borers were also more abundant when ants were not present. In addition to the incidence of stem boring insects and ant colonies, we examined relative levels of leaf pubescence by measuring trichome density and leaf size for E. labios trees. We found that trichome density was significantly greater in trees with evidence of prior shoot damage (presumably from stem borer emergence at the meristem) but was not significantly related to the presence or absence of an ant colony. This prompted us to compare trichome density on leaves of nearby small trees and of different branches of the same tree, pairing a stem/branch that appeared damaged with one that appeared healthy. Trichome densities on leaves from damaged stems and branches were significantly greater than were trichome densities on healthy branches and stems. Based on these empirical data, we present several possible explanations for the patterns of association between ants, stem borers, and pubescence. Although feeding preference tests with a common folivore showed no effect of trichome densities on leaves, we suggest further study on how trichomes may affect ovipositing stem borers.  相似文献

Eighty soybeans (Glyane max Merr) cultivars, includingx a resistant line Oxley 615 were each inoculated with seven streams of soybean mosaic virus SMV. Susceptible cultivers produced smaller plants with delaved maturity, and reduced seed yield relative to the non inoculared plants Someptible cultivars had.a higher level of morrled seeds and seat transmission ot SMV from the morrled seeds than the resistance line Oxley 615. The SMV strain cultivar interaction was significant for all traits, suggsesting that soybean cultivars should be tested against specific SMV strains to determine their response to this virus.  相似文献
