In the female grasshopper Gomphocerus rufus mating replaces copulatory readiness with immediate and long-lasting `secondary defense', during which further mating attempts are efficiently repelled. The behavioral change is caused by secretions from the male accessory glands' white secretory tubule 1 which is injected with the spermatophore material into the female's spermathecal duct. A bristle field of contact chemoreceptors at the entry of the spermathecal duct into the endbulb is assumed to be stimulated by the secretion. Ablation of the bristle field, interruption of the nervous pathway between the spermatheca and the ventral nervecord, or severance of the latter sustains sexual receptivity after mating. Both the secretion from white secretary tubule 1 and the spermatophore contained in the spermatheca of a mated female are digested by proteolytic enzymes from spermathecal gland cells. Dissolved material is resorbed by similar glandular-like cells. The intersexual conflicts of interest and their evolutionary consequences are discussed. Accepted: 4 December 1998 相似文献

Chemical stimulation of contact chemoreceptors located on the legs of locusts evokes withdrawal movements of the leg. The likelihood of withdrawal depends on the site of stimulation, in addition to the identity and concentration of the chemical stimulus. A significantly higher percentage of locusts exhibit leg avoidance movements in response to stimulation of distal parts of the leg with any given chemical stimulus compared to proximal sites. Moreover, the percentage of locusts exhibiting avoidance movements is correlated with the density and sensitivity of chemoreceptors on different sites of an individual leg. The effectiveness of chemical stimulation also differs between the fore and hind legs, with NaCl evoking a higher probability of leg withdrawal movements on the foreleg. Moreover, sucrose was less effective than NaCl at evoking withdrawal movements of the foreleg, particularly at low concentrations. The gradients in behavioural responses can be partially attributed to differences in the responsiveness and density of the contact chemoreceptors. These results may reflect the different specialization of individual legs, with the forelegs particularly involved in food selection. 相似文献

Migration of first-stage larvae (L1) from faeces to soil is a crucial stage in the life-history of protostrongylids transmitted via land snails. Migration of Muellerius cf. capillaris and a Cystocaulus sp. L1 from fresh Nubian ibex (Capra ibex nubiana) faeces (48–50% water content, W.C.) to substrate soils (at 100% r.h., 26°C) was measured experimentally using dry (3 ± 1% W.C.), wet (31 ± 0.43% W.C.) and flooded (48.4 ± 2.45% W.C.) soils. The highest migration rates (90.4 ± 1.6% migration) in both species occurred on flooded soils when the faecal pellet W.C. reached 90%. The next highest migration rates (43.2 ± 3.6% migration, at 60% faecal W.C.) were on the wet soils and no migration occurred on dry soil or dry-substrate papers. Migration rates did not differ significantly (P > 0.05) between species. Active Theba pisana were not infected by M. cf. capillaris L1 on dry infested soils, but were infected following rehydration of the same soils. By day 10, L1 of M. cf. capillaris demonstrated lower survival rates in water and in 97% and 76% r.h. (74.5%, 15.2% and 1.9%, respectively) than the Cystocaulus sp. (97.5%, 43.8%, 43.3%) and Protostrongylus sp. (97.9%, 43.2%, 23.8%, P < 0.05). All three nematodes had a remarkably high survival rate (> 99% overall survival, by day 10) when exposed directly to 0% r.h. at 23°C, Results demonstrate the ability of L1 to survive extreme desiccation through anhydrobiosis. The visual system is the most studied sensory pathway, which is partly because visual stimuli have rather intuitive properties. There are reasons to think that the underlying principle ruling coding, however, is the same for vision and any other type of sensory signal, namely the code has to satisfy some notion of optimality--understood as minimum redundancy or as maximum transmitted information. Given the huge variability of natural stimuli, it would seem that attaining an optimal code is almost impossible; however, regularities and symmetries in the stimuli can be used to simplify the task: symmetries allow predicting one part of a stimulus from another, that is, they imply a structured type of redundancy. Optimal coding can only be achieved once the intrinsic symmetries of natural scenes are understood and used to the best performance of the neural encoder. In this paper, we review the concepts of optimal coding and discuss the known redundancies and symmetries that visual scenes have. We discuss in depth the only approach which implements the three of them known so far: translational invariance, scale invariance and multiscaling. Not surprisingly, the resulting code possesses features observed in real visual systems in mammals. 相似文献

First stage (L1) larvae of Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus colubriformis and Ostertagia circumcincta can be cryopreserved in the presence of DMSO using a two-step freezing protocol involving an initial period at −80°C prior to transfer to liquid nitrogen. Thawed L1 larvae continue development in vitro producing third stage (L3) larvae that are infective to sheep when dosed per os. Establishment rates for L3 larvae grown from thawed L1 larvae were 40 and 80% for H. contortus and T. colubriformis, respectively. There was no difference in survival or infectivity between benzimidazole (BZ)-susceptible and BZ-resistant H. contortus isolates and cryopreservation caused no shift in their BZ-resistance status as indicated in an in vitro larval development assay. Cryopreservation also had no effect on the sensitivity of these isolates to the avermectins or levamisole in vitro. High survival rates (60–70%), good levels of establishment and the stability of anthelmintic resistance status of isolates indicate that little if any selection occurs during the cryopreservation process. L1 larvae of all 3 species have been successfully recovered after 16 months storage in liquid nitrogen, cultured to the L3 stage and established in sheep. 相似文献

Hippocampal place cells are characterized by location-specific firing, that is each cell fires in a restricted region of the environment explored by the rat. In this review, we briefly examine the sensory information used by place cells to anchor their firing fields in space and show that, among the various sensory cues that can influence place cell activity, visual and motion-related cues are the most relevant. We then explore the contribution of several cortical areas to the generation of the place cell signal with an emphasis on the role of the visual cortex and parietal cortex. Finally, we address the functional significance of place cell activity and demonstrate the existence of a clear relationship between place cell positional activity and spatial navigation performance. We conclude that place cells, together with head direction cells, provide information useful for spatially guided movements, and thus provide a unique model of how spatial information is encoded in the brain. 相似文献

The course of Cryptosporidium baileyi infection in chickens fed with different doses of fusariotoxins was compared with that of control groups. F-2 toxin levels of 0.187–1.5 mg kg−1 and T-2 toxin levels of 0.187–6.0 mg kg−1 were investigated. The experimental amimals were orally infected with 6 × 105 C. baileyi oocysts at 1 week of age. Total daily oocyst output was monitored by a quantitative method. Acquired immunity was tested at the age of 4 weeks, by ELISA and by a challenge infection with an equal number of oocysts, upon recovery from the primary infection. The results show that in chickens kept on the lower doses of F-2 and T-2 toxins, the parasite infection ran a similar course to that in the control groups, and the animals became resistant to re-infection. However, when higher doses (2.0–6.0 mg kg−1) of T-2 toxin were used, a depression of weight gain was observed with some other physiological parameters (PCV, weight of bursa, weight of thymus, skin thickness in PHA-P skin test) also indicating toxic effect and, simultaneously, the oocyst output decreased significantly and the patent period was slightly prolonged. Although certain modifications of the immune response could be revealed, the chickens became resistant to re-infection. Only early (1 week of age) parasite infection and 6 mg kg−1 T-2 toxin in the feed significantly depressed body weight gain and immunity. 相似文献

Dynamic recurrent neural networks composed of units with continuous activation functions provide a powerful tool for simulating a wide range of behaviors, since the requisite interconnections can be readily derived by gradient descent methods. However, it is not clear whether more realistic integrate-and-fire cells with comparable connection weights would perform the same functions. We therefore investigated methods to convert dynamic recurrent neural networks of continuous units into networks with integrate-and-fire cells. The transforms were tested on two recurrent networks derived by backpropagation. The first simulates a short-term memory task with units that mimic neural activity observed in cortex of monkeys performing instructed delay tasks. The network utilizes recurrent connections to generate sustained activity that codes the remembered value of a transient cue. The second network simulates patterns of neural activity observed in monkeys performing a step-tracking task with flexion/extension wrist movements. This more complicated network provides a working model of the interactions between multiple spinal and supraspinal centers controlling motoneurons. Our conversion algorithm replaced each continuous unit with multiple integrate-and-fire cells that interact through delayed "synaptic potentials". Successful transformation depends on obtaining an appropriate fit between the activation function of the continuous units and the input-output relation of the spiking cells. This fit can be achieved by adapting the parameters of the synaptic potentials to replicate the input-output behavior of a standard sigmoidal activation function (shown for the short-term memory network). Alternatively, a customized activation function can be derived from the input-output relation of the spiking cells for a chosen set of parameters (demonstrated for the wrist flexion/extension network). In both cases the resulting networks of spiking cells exhibited activity that replicated the activity of corresponding continuous units. This confirms that the network solutions obtained through backpropagation apply to spiking networks and provides a useful method for deriving recurrent spiking networks performing a wide range of functions. 相似文献

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a vector-borne parasitic disease of the skin. Previous open controlled studies with oral itraconazole suggest that it was effective for CL in India. Twenty patients with localised CL participated in this trial. Patients were allocated randomly to receive capsule itraconazole and matching placebo for 6 weeks. No topical medicines were used. Demonstration of Leishmania by slit smear was mandatory. Prior to, periodically during and 3 months after completion of therapy an overall clinical assessment, liver function tests and urinalysis were performed. On decoding, out of the 10 cases receiving drug itraconazole, 7 were declared cured by clinical and parasitological criteria. No major side-effects were noted. Spontaneous remission was observed in 1 case in the placebo group at 3 months follow up. Oral itraconazole has a promising antileishmanial potential and may thus secure CL patient from the hazards of antimonials. 相似文献

Calling male toads were tested behaviourally for their prey catching responses to wormlike stimuli and assigned to groups of non-hungry and hungry depending on their prey catching motivation before being prepared for visual unit, massed unit and slow potential shift (SPS) recording from the optic tectum. Control recordings to visual stimuli were made before recording the effects of application of isotonic solutions containing concentrations of 0-41 mM K(+). Application of solution was followed by presentation of the visual stimulus while the solution still bathed the tectum. The best tectal responses were made to large square visual stimuli in the non-hungry toads, perhaps because recordings were made in the breeding season. Responses of the tectum to solution addition were significant in the concentration range of 7-17 mM K(+). Hungry toads showed an earlier, smaller response than non-hungry (sexually motivated) animals. When the visual stimulus was presented, there were unit and massed unit responses at all bathing solution concentrations, which were larger in non-hungry animals. These experiments revealed that toads motivated to feed respond earlier than non-hungry toads to application of artificial CSF to the tectum, though non-hungry toads responded best to the subsequent visual stimulus. 相似文献
