Abstract 1 The feeding responses of Pterostichus madidus Fab., P. melanarius Illiger and Nebria brevicollis Fab. (Coleoptera: Carabidae) to dimethoate‐contaminated prey were investigated in ‘no‐choice’ and ‘choice’ feeding tests. 2 In the no‐choice tests, starved beetles were presented with aphid prey treated with four concentrations of dimethoate. In the choice tests, treated and untreated prey were presented together and the feeding preferences of the starved beetles observed. 3 No avoidance or rejection behaviour was seen in any of the carabids in either of the tests, i.e. no discrimination of the treated and untreated prey was observed. 4 Sufficient dimethoate was consumed with the aphid prey to cause significant mortality levels in the carabids. 5 The concentrations of dimethoate used in these experiments are comparable to field exposure, so carabids feeding in treated fields and field margins could potentially suffer lethal effects via the indirect exposure route of consuming contaminated prey.  相似文献

The usefulness of features of leaf hairs in distinguishing subgenera and sections is well documented in bothRhododendron andSolanum. In this analysis of the taxa ofSolanum sect.Basarthrum (23 species), and of a sample of closely related taxa from sect.Petota (22 species), it is shown that such features serve to delineate subsectional groups such as series and some species as well. SectionBasarthrum has an unexpected diversity of hair types. Although this group has been characterized by 2-celled bayonet hairs, more than one half of the taxa in the section bear multicellular finger hairs, and 3 species also possess branched hairs. Thus, major rearrangements of the species previously assigned to sect.Basarthrum are indicated or supported by pubescence features. The taxa studied from seriesEtuberosa andJuglandifolia (both of sect.Petota) show hair types that a) are relatively primitive for the section, and b) show linkage between sects.Petota andBasarthrum.  相似文献

Summary The taxonomic composition and size of arthropods captured by Pinguicula nevadense, an endemic carnivorous plant of the high-mountain zone of the Sierra Nevada (southern Spain), are analysed. The actual prey of P. nevadense and the available arthropods trapped by mimic-traps are compared, in order to identify the capture constraints of the plant. The results show that P. nevadense captures various arthropod taxa. Winged insects, especially Nematocera, make up the main component of the diet. The range of prey sizes in all P. nevadense populations studied is similar. The taxonomic composition of arthropods trapped by the mimic-traps is similar to that of the actual prey of P. nevadense. However, the plant captures prey only below a specific size threshold. These size constraints appear to be the principal factor determining the actual prey of this carnivorous plant.  相似文献

Aphids were countedin situ and carabid beetle populations assessed by pitfall trapping betwen 1983–1985 in potato fields in Scotland treated with demeton-S-methyl (DSM) or untreated.Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas) (Homoptera: Aphididae) was the most abundant aphid. Nineteen species of carabid beetles were trapped but the fauna was dominated byPterostichus melanarius (Ill.) andPterostichus madidus (Fabr.) (Coleoptera: Carabidae). Pitfall trap catches of these carabids were variable but generally lower in sprayed than unsprayed plots for a few days after DSM application and higher a week or two later. Of 1800P. melanarius and 910P. madidus dissected, 14.4 per cent and 30.5 per cent respectively, contained aphid remains. The proportion that had eaten aphids often was higher in sprayed than unsprayed plots immediately after treatment. In additional experiments, aphids treated with DSM fell from plants; four to five per cent of the theoretically applied dose of DSM reached the ground in a closed-canopy potato crop; and no mortality occurred whenPterostichus spp. were exposed to DSM in a field bioassay. It is proposed that observed patterns in trap catch ofPterostichus spp. around times of pesticide application may be due in part to aphids falling to the ground after treatment. Beetles that eat these fallen aphids may be less hungry, less active and less likely to be trapped. Later increases in catches may be attributed to hungry, more active beetles, a consequence of prey removal by the insecticide. Although this hypothesis requires further research, it is clear that the effects of insecticide treatment on carabid populations cannot be measured by pitfall trapping alone.  相似文献

The 1-, 2-, and 3-tubulin genes have been mapped by in situ hybridization on the polytene chromosomes of 11 selected species (15 strains) belonging to theDrosophila montium subgroup. Although the hybridization pattern among the strains of the same species does not differ, this pattern is significantly different among the species. The -tubulin genes in themontium subgroup seem to be organized in a cluster, or in a semi-cluster, or are completely dispersed. The clustered arrangement is found in the North-Oriental sibling speciesD. auraria, D. triauraria, andD. quadraria. The semi-clustered arrangement, wherein the 1 and 2 genes are located at the same locus while 3 is at a different one, appears in the South-Oriental speciesD. bicomuta, D. serrata, andD. birchii, as well as in the Afrotropical speciesD. diplacantha andD. seguyi. The complete separation of the genes is observed in the Indian speciesD. kikkawai andD. jambulina and in the Afrotropical speciesD. vulcana. Based on the above results, a possible mode of evolution of the -tubulin genes in the montium subgroup is attempted. In addition, phylogenetic relationships among themontium species are discussed. PAGE and SDS-PAGE electrophoretic analysis of 31 accessions of 10 Old-WorldLupinus species, 5 smooth-seeded and 5 rough-seeded, covered total seed albumins and 2S albumins isolated by a solid-phase extraction. PAGE albumin patterns showed a distinct difference between the smooth- and rough-seeded lupins. SDS-PAGE analysis of seed albumins revealed interspecific differences, mainly due to the 2S albumins. The differences were especially marked in the smooth-seeded species. In the rough-seeded lupins the following subgroups were distinguished: (1)L. atlanticus, (2)L. cosentinii andL. digitatus, (3)L. palaestinus andL. pilosus. Evidence was provided that the 2S albumin class contains conglutin , so far classified as a globulin. The results are discussed with reference to taxonomic relationships of the Old-World lupins and characterization of the lupin seed albumin fraction.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of polyphagous predators may often reflect the integration of aggregative responses to local densities of multiple species of prey, and as such may have consequences for the indirect linkages among the prey sharing these predators. In a factorial field experiment in which we manipulated local prey densities within a field of alfalfa in Utah (USA), we tested whether aphidophagous ladybirds would aggregate not only in response to their primary aphid prey, but also in response to an abundant alternative prey, the alfalfa weevil (Hypera postica [Gyllenhal]). Native North American ladybirds (primarily Hippodamia convergens Guerin and H. quinquesignata quinquesignata [Kirby]) responded only to spatial variation in aphid density. In contrast, the introduced ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata L., aggregated also at local concentrations of the weevil late in the experiment when weevil density was high and aphid density was relatively low throughout all experimental plots. The results support the hypothesis that C. septempunctata is more responsive than are native ladybirds to the availability of alternative prey in alfalfa, which may account in part for the displacement of native ladybirds from alfalfa by the introduced species as aphid numbers have declined. The differing responses of the native and introduced ladybirds to spatial patterns of the alternative prey underscore the importance of extending the study of predator aggregation to understand better how polyphagous predators distribute themselves in response to spatial patterns of multiple species of potential prey.  相似文献

Summary The BSG test was used in a comparative study of the linear chromosome differentiation and the idiograms of T. Macha ssp. tubalicum v. letschchumicum Dek. et Men., T. georgicum Dek., T. timopheevi. Zhuk., T. carthlicum Nevski, T. dicoccum Schrank, v. rufum, T. durum Desf. v. Arnautka were compiled.The karyotype of each polyploid wheat species consists of two groups of chromosomes. The first is formed by ten pairs of constant chromosomes occurring almost in all species and the second by all the rest of the variable chromosomes that are either fully specific for the species in question or occur only in a few species. T. timopheevi largely differs from other species of polyploid wheats in the high level and specific localization of structural heterochromatin on chromosomes. The rols of introgression in wheat evolution and the necessity of establishing a General Cytological Nomenclature of Cereal Chromosomes are discussed.  相似文献

Individual female Episyrphus balteatus (DeGeer) (Diptera: Syrphidae) show different oviposition preferences when presented with two aphid prey species, Aphis sambuci L. and A. fabae (Scop). After larvae were reared on those aphids, some fitness components indicated that individual females were adapted to different host-use strategies, with preference for one aphid prey species entailing a trade-off in poorer performance on another. We interpret the pattern of significant interactions as suggesting that natural selection has responded to the nutritional value of prey. Four carabid species,Anisodactylus santaecrucis, Bembidion quadrimaculatum oppositum, Pterostichus lucublandus andPterostichus melanarius, abundant in carrot fields in southwestern Quebec, were tested for predation against the carrot weevil,Listronotus oregonensis, on host plants. The largest species,Pterostichus melanarius, consumed the greatest number of carrot weevil larvae and pupae.Bembidion quadrimaculatum oppositum did not prey on carrot weevil eggs laid on carrot leaves.   相似文献

1. Subterranean carabid larvae are more numerous than surface‐active adults, yet very little is known about their ecological significance, dietary preferences or ability to regulate populations of prey species, particularly pests. Part of the reason for this is that predator–prey interactions beneath the soil are almost impossible to observe. 2. Extensive field studies have shown that adult Pterostichus melanarius (Illiger) can affect the temporal and spatial dynamics of their slug prey. However, if larvae too are feeding on slugs, this could radically affect overall predator–prey dynamics. 3. We tested the hypotheses that P. melanarius larvae would kill and consume two slug species, Deroceras reticulatum Müller and Arion intermedius Normand, under laboratory and semi‐field conditions, and that there would be no significant difference in rates of predation on these slug species. 4. A new monoclonal antibody was developed that was capable of detecting the presence of slug proteins in the guts of P. melanarius larvae. 5. Pterostichus melanarius larvae killed both A. intermedius and D. reticulatum in the laboratory, feeding to a greater extent, and growing more rapidly, on the latter. The larvae were equally effective at reducing numbers of both slug species in a crop of wheat grown in semi‐field mini plots, but predation was affected by density‐dependent intra‐specific competition amongst the beetle larvae. 6. Future modelling of the dynamic interactions between carabids and slugs will need to take into account predation by larvae.  相似文献

Generalist predators have to deal with prey with sometimes very different morphologies and defensive behaviors. Therefore, such predators are expected to express plasticity in their predation strategy. Here we investigated the predatory behavior of the recluse spider Loxosceles rufipes (Araneae, Sicariidae) when attacking prey with different morphologies and defensive mechanisms. We expected L. rufipes to show different prey capture strategies and variable acceptance towards each prey type. Potential prey species were collected directly from the web or in the surroundings of the web-building site of L. rufipes. We collected and used the following in our experiments: termite workers (Nasutitermes sp.), lepidopteran larvae (Eurema salome), ants (Camponotus sp.) and isopods (Tylidae). We paired these prey with L. rufipes and recorded their behavior in captivity, quantifying acceptance rate, immobilization time and the sequence of behaviors by the predator. The acceptance rate was lower for isopods but not different among other prey. The immobilization time was higher for isopods than for termites and similar for the other pairwise comparisons. The behavioral sequence was similar for all prey except for isopods, which were also bit more often. Our combined results show plasticity in the behavior of L. rufipes and also show it subdues a potentially dangerous prey (ant) and an armored prey (isopod).  相似文献

The pollination biology and breeding systems ofKielmeyera coriacea andK. speciosa, two sympatric woody species common in the cerrado vegetation of C. Brazil, were studied. Both species have similar nectarless, polystemonous Papaver-type flowers which are visited by a similar spectrum of insects, though they bloom in different seasons and are thus phenologically isolated. Large carpenter bees seem to be the most important pollinators and these and other bees effect buzz pollen retrieval despite the fact that anthers are not poricidal. Both species ofKielmeyera possess strong xenogamous breeding systems. The presence of staminate flowers and andromonoecy inK. coriacea, as well as the longevity ofK. speciosa flowers are discussed as alternative strategies to improve pollination success and reproductive efficacy.  相似文献

Summary The individual movements of four carabid species were investigated by tracing beetles in the field using a portable radar system (harmonic radar). The field-inhabiting a Pterostichus melanarius Illiger, P. niger Schaller and Harpalus rufipes De Geer were traced in cereal fields. The movements of P. melanarius Mnd P. niger were also tracked in a wood and then compared with the movements of the forest-species Carabus nemoralis Müller. P. melanarius and P. niger displayed directed movements in cereal fields, although P. niger moved faster than P. melanarius. The movement pattern of H. rufipes in the field, and C. nemoralis and P. malanarius in the wood can be described as a c correlated random walk. In cereal fields, P. melanarius burrowed actively into the soil, and P. niger searched out crevices. In contrast, none of these two carabids burrowed in the forest soil, whereas C. nemoralis did. No statistically significant difference was observed between the movements of hungry and satiated beetles, although starved beetles tended to disperse shorter distances per move and turned back more often (especially P. niger). The significance of the various movement patterns exhibited by the species studied for their reproduction and survival on arable land is discussed.  相似文献

One hundred and thirty seven isolates ofCandida species were isolated from antiobiotic associated diarrhoea cases and were examined to study the role ofCandida in the pathogenesis of diarrhoea in infants. The quantitative estimation of yeast population by simple gram stain smear revealed more than 70% of the cases had 3+ score. The isolates further screened for detection of-lactamases. Among the isolatedCandida sp,-lactamases was secreted byC. albicans, C. tropicalis, C. krusei andC. parapsilosis. The Harpalini species Harpalus rufipes, as many other generalist carabids, consume a wide variety of prey and it is known to feed on pest slugs such as the grey field slug Deroceras reticulatum, but quantitative data about the predatory activity of H. rufipes on slugs are very scarce. In laboratory experiments, we assessed the capability of male H. rufipes to kill eggs and different‐sized slugs of the pest species D. reticulatum in either the absence or the presence of alternative live prey (dipteran larvae and aphids). We also investigated the preference of H. rufipes for eggs and hatchlings of D. reticulatum in a choice experiment. H. rufipes killed considerable amounts of eggs and small juveniles (≤5.0 mg) of D. reticulatum, both in no‐choice and in choice situations. Medium‐sized juvenile slugs (10–20 mg) were seldom killed only in no‐choice situations, and no large juveniles (50–60 mg) were killed. Dipteran larvae and aphids were killed also in no‐choice and in choice situations. The type of alternative prey presented with slug eggs affected the survival of the eggs to H. rufipes predation. The presence of dipteran larvae as alternative prey did not affect the survival of juvenile slugs. When eggs and small juvenile slugs were offered together, the survivals of both items were similar. The obtained results under laboratory conditions suggest that the generalist predator H. rufipes might realise an important contribution to the control of pest slugs.  相似文献

Summary A variety of thermophilic organisms andBacillus species were screened in shake flask culture for arabanase andp-nitrophenyl--l-arabinosidase activities. Highest arabanase activity was produced by strains ofThielavia terrestris andSporotrichum cellulophilum. Thermoascus aurantiacus and severalBacillus species were most active producers of arabinosidase. Arabinosidases fromBacillus strains had pH optima in the range 5.9–6.7. pH optima of fungal arabinosidases ranged from 2.9 to 6.7.Bacillus arabanases had neutral pH optima, whereas fungal arabanases had pH optima in the range 3.7–5.1. In general, arabinosidases were found to be relatively thermostable, retaining >70% activity for 3 h at 60°C. TheT. aurantiacus enzyme retained 98% activity at 70°C after 3 h.Bacillus arabanases were relatively unstable. All fungal arabanases except theT. aurantiacus enzyme were fully denatured at 70°C after 3 h.  相似文献

  • 1 The influence of within‐field position and adjoining habitat on carabid beetles was studied in 20 winter wheat fields in ten different Swiss agricultural landscapes. In each landscape, two winter wheat fields (one with adjoining sown wildflower area and one with adjoining grassy margin) were investigated.
  • 2 Carabid beetles were caught in pitfall traps 3 and 30 m from the edge in each of the 20 wheat fields. Significantly more individuals were found in the centres (30‐m position) than at the edges (3‐m position). Conversely, species richness was significantly higher at the field edges than in the centres.
  • 3 Of the ten most abundant species, Poecilus cupreus, Agonum muelleri and Pterostichus melanarius were significantly more abundant in the field centres than at the edges. Harpalus rufipes was significantly more abundant in the fields adjoining sown wildflower areas than in the fields adjoining grassy margins.
  • 4 In conclusion, the response of carabid beetles to within‐field position and adjoining habitats was species specific. This needs to be taken into account in habitat management for biodiversity conservation and pest control.

Acid polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis (A-PAGE) of ethanol-soluble proteins from the endosperm of bread and durum wheats reveals some bands encoded by genes on the homoeologous group-1 chromosomes with higher mobility than the -gliadins. The isolation of these proteins showed that they were the previously described 25-kDa globulins encoded by genes at the Glo-A1, Glo-B1, and Glo-D1 loci. The variability found among a collection of 51 bread and 81 durum wheats was very low: two allelic variants at Glo-A1 and no variants at Glo-B1 in each of the two species, and two allelic variants at Glo-D1 in bread wheat. Inheritance studies of 25-kDa globulin genes on group-1 chromosomes of bread and durum wheat were carried out on the F2 progeny from four crosses, two in bread wheat and two in durum wheat. The linkage mapping of the 1A 25-kDa globulin genes of bread wheat was done based on four prolamin loci: Glu-A1, Glu-A3, Gli-A1 and Gli -A3. The percentages of recombination and the distances found allowed a re-evaluation of the linkage map of endosperm protein loci on this chromosome. The Glo-A1 locus was found to be located at the distal end of the short arm of 1A chromosome, at a distance of 5.23±1.99 cM from Gli-A1, 6.85±2.22 cM from Glu-A3, 22.64±3.62 cM from Gli-A1, and at a recombination percentage of 49.30±4.40 from Glu-A1. A similar distance between Gli-A1 and Glo-A1 (4.82±1.75 and 6.66±2.26 cM) was found in durum wheat. The distance between Gli-D1 and Glo-D1 on chromosome 1D was 2.86±1.39 cM.  相似文献
