Abstract Phylogenetic relationships of 25 genera of Holarctic Teleiodini (Gelechiidae) are postulated based on morphology and molecular characters, including CO‐I, CO‐II, and 28S genes. The phylogenetic analysis of the morphology matrix yielded four equal most‐parsimonious trees (length 330 steps, CI = 0.36, RI = 0.55) and a strict consensus tree (length 335 steps, CI = 0.36, RI = 0.54) with one polytomy and one trichotomy. The phylogenetic analysis of the combined morphology and CO‐I + CO‐II + 28S matrices yielded two equally most‐parsimonious trees (length 1184 steps, CI = 0.50, RI = 0.42) and a strict consensus tree (length 1187 steps, CI = 0.50, RI = 0.42) that reinforced results from the morphological analysis and resolved the one polytomy present in the morphology consensus tree. Teleiodini are defined as a monophyletic clade with a Bremer support value greater than 5 in the consensus tree based on morphological and molecular data. Twenty‐three clades of genera are defined with Bremer support values provided. An analysis of larval host‐plant preferences based on the consensus tree for combined data indicates derivation of feeding on woody hosts from genera feeding on herbaceous hosts and a single origin of feeding on coniferous hosts. An area cladogram indicates five independent origins of Nearctic genera from Holarctic ancestors and one origin from a Palearctic genus.  相似文献

A cladistic analysis, primarily based on morphology, is presented from 40 diploid taxa representing the 24 monogenomic genera of the Triticeae. General problems related to the treatment of hybrids and supposedly allopolyploid heterogenomic taxa are highlighted. Special emphasis is given to taxa not traditionally included in Aegilops s.J. Most of the 33 characters used in the analysis are coded as binary. The only four multistate characters in the matrix are treated as unordered. Three diploid species of Bromus are used as outgroup. The number of equally parsimonious trees found is very large (approx. 170000; length = 107, ci = 0.36, ri = 0.75) and the strict consensus tree has an expectedly low level of resolution. However, most of the equally parsimonious trees owe their existence to an unresolved Aegilops clade. If this clade is replaced by its hypothetical ancestor, the number of equally parsimonious trees drops dramatically (48; length = 78, ci = 0.45, ri = 0.76). When trees for which more highly resolved compatible trees exist are excluded, only two trees remain. Bremer support is used as a measure of branch support. The trees based on morphology and on molecular data are largely incongruent.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships of spionid genera are estimated from parsimony analyses of morphological characters, with Trochochaetidae, Poecilochaetidae and Uncispionidae as outgroups. A first analysis of currendy recognised genera proved inconclusive and even exclusion of six of the most polymorphic genera resulted in 13 305 equally parsimonious trees and a fully collapsed consensus tree. A second analysis using only the type species of each genus, yielded four equally parsimonious trees; reduced to two after successive weighting. The topologies of these two trees indicated division of the family into four main groups: (1) Aonidella and Xandaros; (2) Prionospio (sensu fato)-complex, Laonice, Spiophanes and Aonides; (3) a large assemblage of genera, including Polydora-{senm late), Scolelepis, Malacoceros and Spio; (4) Atherospio, Pseudatherospio and Pygospiopsis. Earlier literature classifications of the group are evaluated and compared with die new results.  相似文献

The Solanum sessile species group is one of eight putatively monophyletic subgroups of the large and diverse Solanum section Geminata. The species group comprises ten species of mostly northern South American trees and shrubs. Characters and character states peculiar to Solanum are discussed in detail. A cladistic analysis of the sessile group yielded four equally parsimonious trees which represent two basic tree topologies. The consensus cladogram is composed of three main clades. Biogeographic analysis using the consensus tree revealed no components in common to the three clades. Possible geographical scenarios are discussed with reference to the geological history of northern South America.  相似文献

Phylogeny of nereidids (Polychaeta, Nereididae) with paragnaths   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A phylogenetic analysis was conducted of the Nereidinae — those members of the Nereididae (Polychaeta) with pharyngeal paragnaths. We had two objectives: to test the monophyly of currently accepted genera, subgenera and informal subgeneric groupings within the Nereidinae, and, if warranted, to propose a more natural classification of the Nereidinae. Parsimony analyses were undertaken, including 52 terminal taxa from all genera and informal groupings from the large heterogeneous genera Nereis , Ceratonereis , Neanthes and Perinereis . Analyses of a character set of 52 informative characters yielded more than 10 000 equally parsimonious trees with a length of 176 steps (consistency index [CI] = 0.34, retention index [RI] = 0.66). Reweighting three times resulted in 445 most parsimonious trees with length 54.62 (CI = 0.59, RI = 0.79). Many characters widely used in nereidid systematics were found to exhibit high levels of homoplasy. The most parsimonious trees could not be rooted such that the selected ingroup, 'Nereididae with paragnaths', was monophyletic, causing us to reject the monophyly of the Nereidinae as currently defined. The following genera were well supported by the parsimony analyses and are newly diagnosed: Alitta , Ceratonereis , Pseudonereis , Simplisetia , Solomononereis and Unanereis . Alitta succinea , Pseudonereis cortezi , Pseudonereis noodti and Pseudonereis pseudonoodti are proposed as new combinations. The parsimony analysis supported the monophyly of neither Composetia , Neanthes , Nereis and Perinereis nor of any new groupings of remaining species presently placed in those genera. It is these poorly supported genera that comprise most species of Nereididae.  相似文献

This study was performed to ascertain the relationships among clionid and spirastrellid species from the Mediterranean Sea, based on phylogenetic criteria. A matrix of 34 taxa and 20 characters was analysed. Cladistic analysis using PAUP produced 12 equally parsimonious trees of 54 steps (CI=0.648, RI=0.865). Resolution was high in all parts of the strict consensus tree except in those which involved relationships among the most characteristic clionid species: those having only tylostyles as megascleres and, if microscleres are present, these being spirasters. Six monophyletic groups, three of them represented by monospecific clades, appear in the totally resolved part of the trees, which supports their separation into different genera. On the basis of the results obtained, the species at present within the genus Cliona have been allocated to five different genera: Scantilletta, Pione, Volzia, Bernatia and Cliona , while Dotona and Cliothosa are maintained as separate genera. Scantilletta and Pione are genera erected by de Laubenfels (1936 Pap. Tortugas Lab. 30 , 1–225) and Gray (1867 Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond. XXXII , 492–558) respectively, and whose diagnoses are amended here. Volzia and Bernatia are proposed as new genera to include Cliona albicans and Cliona rovignensis , and Cliona vermifera , respectively. Thus, the genus Cliona clearly appears in our analysis as a polyphyletic group. It is only maintained provisionally to harbour species whose position cannot be clearly ascertained from the information at hand. Skeletal characters such as spicule types and skeletal arrangement have proven to be useful in discriminating some genera and families but they do not completely resolve the phylogeny of this group of species. Biochemical, genetic, cytological or reproductive information, when available, may help in the resolution of the phylogenetic tree.  相似文献

Cladistic analysis of a numerical data matrix describing 27 characters for species of Taenia resulted in 4 most parsimonious phylogenetic trees (174 steps; consistency index = 0.28; homoplasy index = 0.72; retention index = 0.48). Monophyly for Taenia is diagnosed by the metacestode that is either a cysticercus or a form derived from a bladder-like larva; no other unequivocal synapomorphies are evident. Tree structure provides no support for recognition of a diversity of tribes or genera within the Taeniinae: Fimbriotaeniini and Taeniini have no phylogenetic basis. Hydatigera, Fimbriotaenia, Fossor, Monordotaenia, Multiceps, Taeniarhynchus, Tetratirotaenia must be subsumed within Taenia as synonyms. Taenia saginata and Taenia asiatica are sister species and distantly related to Taenia solium. Cospeciation with respect to carnivorous definitive hosts and Taenia appears to be limited. Although felids are putative ancestral hosts, contemporary associations appear to have resulted from extensive host-switching among felids, canids, hyaenids, and others. In contrast, relationships with herbivorous intermediate hosts are indicative of more pervasive coevolution; rodents as intermediate hosts are postulated as ancestral for the Taeniidae, Taenia + Echinococcus. Patterns appear consistent with rapid shifts between phylogenetically unrelated carnivores but among those that historically exploited a common prey resource within communities in specific biogeographic regions.  相似文献

The genus Lotus L. is a monophyletic group diagnosed by the possession of a standard claw with thickened infolded margin, stamens diadelphous, and the style hardened from the base. It comprises approximately 200 species distributed throughout the world. A cladistic analysis of the New World species was performed using 39 morphological and anatomical characters (29 from seed morphology and anatomy, 1 from plant habit, 1 from leaf morphology, 6 from flower morphology, and 2 from fruit morphology). Dorycnium, Edentolotus, Krokeria , and Pedrosia , of the Old World, and 28 species of the New World were considered terminal taxa. Tetragonolobus Scop. was chosen to root the cladograms and Dorycnium Mill. to reroot them. With Tetragonolobus the analysis yielded 15 equally parsimonious trees, each with a length of 74 steps, a consistency index of 0.62, and a retention index of 0.89. The 15 initial trees and the strict consensus tree defined 12 monophyletic groups. All terminal taxa form a monophyletic group diagnosed by the presence of a radicular lobe discernible to conspicuous (character 10); rim aril thick (character 13); stipules absent (character 31); and style simple and nondilated (character 36). The New World species form a monophyletic group on the basis of the seed relationship of length to width in hilar view 1.5:1 to 2:1 (character 5); micropyle linear-deltoid to bifurcate (character 19); and keel erostrate (character 33). Identical monophyletic groups were obtained when Dorycnium was used as root. These results are discussed in the context of data on cytology and morphology.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships of the Amphitritinae (Polychaeta: Terebellidae) were studied using parsimony analysis of 22 external morphological characters. To choose outgroups to polarize the characters, I carried out a preliminary analysis of the relationships of the four terebellid subfamilies and the Trichobranchidae. The single most parsimonious tree from the analysis supports monophyly of the Terebellidae by the presence of ventral glandular shields. However, this character is homoplasious within the Terebellomorpha, and further evaluation of the Terebellidae is recommended. Artacama and Thelepus were chosen as outgroups for the analysis of amphitritine genera. The generic level analysis yielded seven equally parsimonious trees, which are consistent in their topologies except for the relationships among seven genera in one large clade. In all trees, Artacama is the sister taxon to a large clade within the Amphitritinae; the Artacaminae is therefore synonymized with the Amphitritinae, which is diagnosed by the presence of double rows of uncini. Within the Amphitritinae, the status of several monotypic genera is questioned; plesiomorphic character states indicated by the analysis are discussed. The results presented are offered as working hypotheses of the relationships among amphitritine genera. The large number of homoplasies indicated by the analysis emphasizes the need to further evaluate these hypotheses using additional characters. With a robust phylogenetic hypothesis of amphitritine relationships, a re-classification of the group based on apomorphic character states can be undertaken, and questions regarding the evolution of morphological characters, reproductive modes, or biogeographical patterns can be properly addressed.  相似文献

Aphids of the tribe Eriosomatini are typically associated with the tree genera Ulmus and Zelkova as the primary host, on which they induce several types of leaf gall. To elucidate evolutionary changes in the aphid–host associations and gall morphology, phylogenetic relationships were inferred using 36 species (28 in the ingroup) and based on 52 morphological characters. Phylogenetic analysis with equal character weighting led to hundreds of most‐parsimonious trees, and the strict consensus of these was poorly resolved. However, the successive weighting of characters yielded three most‐parsimonious trees. The strict consensus of these supported the monophyly of the Eriosomatini and the monophyly of most genera. Reconstruction of the aphid–host associations on the consensus tree indicated that the ancestral Eriosomatini were associated with Zelkova and that the association with Ulmus evolved twice independently. Ancestral reconstruction suggests that galls of the leaf‐roll type are ancestral to those of the completely and incompletely closed pouch type, and that each type of pouch galls evolved independently. It is suggested that despite early diversification of the Eriosomatini on Zelkova species, Zelkova‐associated eriosomatines had become extinct or survived as relict parthenogens on the secondary host due to the elimination of Zelkova in most regions since the late Tertiary. In contrast, two large genera in the Eriosomatini, Eriosoma and Tetraneura, are associated with the largest elm section Ulmus whose elements are distributed widely in Eurasia, including boreal regions. Therefore, the available evidence suggests that the present species diversity and distribution patterns of the eriosomatines have been largely affected by the diversification and extinction of their host plants during the late Tertiary and Quaternary.  相似文献

Comparative restriction site mapping of the chloroplast genome was performed to examine phylogenetic relationships among 27 species representing 16 genera of the Berberidaceae and two outgroups. Chloroplast genomes of the species included in this study showed no major structural rearrangements (i.e., they are collinear to tobacco cpDNA) except for the extension of the inverted repeat in species of Berberis and Mahonia. Excluding several regions that exhibited severe length variation, a total of 501 phylogenetically informative sites was mapped for ten restriction enzymes. The strict consensus tree of 14 equally parsimonious trees indicated that some berberidaceous genera (Berberis, Mahonia, Diphylleia) are not monophyletic. To explore phylogenetic utility of different parsimony methods phylogenetic trees were generated using Wagner, Dollo, and weighted parsimony for a reduced data set that included 18 species. One of the most significant results was the recognition of the four chromosomal groups, which were strongly supported regardless of the parsimony method used. The most notable difference among the trees produced by the three parsimony methods was the relationships among the four chromosomal groups. The cpDNA trees also strongly supported a close relationship of several generic pairs (e.g., Berberis-Mahonia, Epimedium-Vancouveria, etc.). Maximum likelihood values were computed for the four different tree topologies of the chromosomal groups, two Wagner, one Dollo, and one weighted topology. The results indicate that the weighted tree has the highest likelihood value. The lowest likelihood value was obtained for the Dollo tree, which had the highest bootstrap and decay values. Separate analyses using only the Inverted Repeat (IR) region resulted in a tree that is identical to the weighted tree. Poor resolution and/or support for the relationships among the four chromosomal lineages of the Berberidaceae indicate that they may have radiated from an ancestral stock in a relatively short evolutionary time.  相似文献

Abstract— The recently published phylogeny of Braconidae by Quicke and van Achterberg is reassessed. Character-state definitions and character polarities are evaluated, and more rigorous methods are suggested. Our results indicate that there are many more parsimonious solutions to their data set, the consensus of which differs substantially from their results. Based on our reassessment, little can be said about the relationships among braconid subfamilies. Consensus trees show the cyclostomes as a largely unresolved basal grade. The two other major lineages which have been proposed, the helconoids and microgastroids, are somewhat better resolved, but not consistently so. Relationships among the helconoids vary considerably depending on the parameters used for parsimony analysis.  相似文献

The genusLecanactis, with 24 species, has been phylogenetically analysed using cladistic parsimony methods and support tests. Morphological, anatomical and chemical data were used, comprising 38 characters. Twelve equally most parsimonious trees were obtained. The successive approximations character weighting method gave one most parsimonious tree. The ingroup,Lecanactis, is supported as monophyletic. Although parsimony jackknifing and Bremer support indicate that the trees are poorly supported, some groups are wholly or partly distinguished in both the strict consensus tree, the successive weighting tree and the Jac tree.  相似文献

Phylogenetic trees and networks are both used in the scientific literature to display DNA sequence variation at the intraspecific level. Should we rather use trees or networks? I argue that the process of inferring the most parsimonious genealogical relationships among a set of DNA sequences should be dissociated from the problem of displaying this information in a graph. A network graph is probably more appropriate than a strict consensus tree if many alternative, equally most parsimonious, genealogies are to be included. Within the maximum parsimony framework, current phylogenetic inference and network‐building algorithms are both unable to guarantee the finding of all most parsimonious (MP) connections. In fact, each approach can find MP connections that the other does not. Although it should be possible to improve at least the maximum parsimony approach, current implementations of these algorithms are such that it is advisable to use both approaches to increase the probability of finding all possible MP connections among a set of DNA sequences.  相似文献

Chloroplast DNA variation was examined for 79 species of Verbesina and 24 outgroups. Two independent analyses of the data were performed. An intergeneric study to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships of Verbesina used 22 genera, most of which are regarded in the literature as closely related to Verbesina. Coreopsis and Hymenoxys served as outgroups for this analysis. The 16 6-bp (base pair) restriction endonucleases used in the intergeneric study revealed 263 phylogenetically informative sites. Wagner analyses of these characters resulted in four equally parsimonious trees with a length of 857 steps and a Consistency Index of 0.492. Results from this study indicate that Verbesina is monophyletic, a member of the tribe Heliantheae, and that its sister taxa are the mostly Mexican genera Podachaenium, Squamopappus, and Tetrachyron. The infrageneric study of Verbesina included species belonging to all of its infrageneric taxa, except the monotypic sect. Stenocarpha. The 17 6-bp restriction endonucleases used in the infrageneric study revealed 137 sites 77 of which were phylogenetically informative. Wagner analyses of these characters generated 180 equally parsimonious trees with a length of 158 steps and a Consistency Index of 0.786. The genera Podachaenium, Squamopappus, and Tetrachyron served as outgroups. Two major clades, which correspond to traditional divisions of the genus based on leaf arrangement, are supported by the study. No support was found for the monophyly of seven of the 11 sections examined; further sampling of sections Lipactinia, Ochractinia, Verbesina, and Ximenesia is needed. Results support a major reassessment of the traditional infrageneric classification of the genus and provide the basis for the reevaluation of the sectional taxonomy of Verbesina. These studies support a North American origin for the genus with several independent introductions into South America producing significant diversity, especially in the Andean region.  相似文献

The crown group of the Neognathostomata, one of the three major clades of irregular echinoids, comprises the paraphyletic order Cassiduloida, the family Neolampadidae, and the order Clypeasteroida. Recent studies have recognized the latter two groups as sister taxa, while suggesting different relationships with other cassiduloids. Here parsimony analyses of 57 qualitative morphologic characters (having 127 states) are employed to determine relationships among all 30 living cassiduloid species and three representative clypeasteroids. The 30 trees (of 144 steps) obtained using unordered multistate characters support the branching sequence: apatopygids (Apatopygus and Porterpygus) , echinolampadids (Echinolampas and Conolampas) , cassidulids (Oligopodia, Eurkodia, Rhyncholampas and Cassidulus), Studeria , neolampadids and clypeasteroids. Contrary to claims in the literature, ordering multistate characters does not improve resolution, although the majority-rule consensus of the resulting 84 trees supports the same relationships among genera. Trees found using only characters likely to be preserved in fossils differ only in the arrangement of the neolampadid taxa. Successive approximations weightings are found to be sensitive to arbitrary choices of the scaling factor and truncation. Weightings can lead to increases or decreases in the number of most parsimonious trees and the congruence among trees.  相似文献

Conoesucidae (Trichoptera, Insecta) are restricted to SE Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. The family includes 42 described species in 12 genera, and each genus is endemic to either New Zealand or Australia. Although monophyly has been previously assumed, no morphological characters have been proposed to represent synapomorphies for the group. We collected molecular data from two mitochondrial genes (16S and cytochrome oxidase I), one nuclear gene (elongation factor 1-α) (2237–2277 bp in total), and 12 morphological characters to produce the first phylogeny of the family. We combined the molecular and morphological characters and performed both a maximum parsimony analysis and a Bayesian analysis to test the monophyly of the family, and to hypothesize the phylogeny among its genera. The parsimony analysis revealed a single most parsimonious tree with Conoesucidae being a monophyletic taxon and sistergroup to the Calocidae. The Bayesian inference produced a distribution of trees, the consensus of which is supported with posterior probabilities of 100% for 15 out of 22 possible ingroup clades including the most basal branch of the family, indicating strong support for a monophyletic Conoesucidae. The most parsimonious tree and the tree from the Bayesian analysis were identical except that the ingroup genus Pycnocentria changed position by jumping to a neighbouring clade. Based on the assumption that the ancestral conoesucid species was present on both New Zealand and Australia, a biogeographical analysis using the dispersal-vicariance criteria demonstrated that one or two (depending on which of the two phylogenetic reconstructions were applied) sympatric speciation events took place on New Zealand prior to a single, late dispersal from New Zealand to Australia.  相似文献

The suborder Amblycera (Insecta: Phthiraptera) comprises seven recognized families of parasitic lice. Three of these families (the Menoponidae, Laemobothriidae and Ricinidae) are present on a wide range of avian hosts. The four remaining families are restricted to a small section of mammals (the Boopiidae are parasites of Australian and New Guinean marsupials, and the Gyropidae, Trimenoponidae and Abrocomophagidae parasitize South and Central American rodents). This study uses a morphological approach to examine the evolutionary relationships between the genera from four amblyceran families: the Menoponidae, Boopiidae, Laemobothriidae and Ricinidae. Genera are represented by exemplars and a total of 44 louse taxa and one outgroup taxon were included. A cladistic analysis of 147 unordered characters recovered six equally parsimonious trees. Bootstrap, jackknife and Bremer support analyses were undertaken to assess the level of support for each resolved node in the strict consensus topology. Strong support was found for deep branch relationships between the families and in some cases for supra-generic groupings within families. The clades present in the strict consensus tree are discussed with reference to supra-generic and interfamily relationships, character choice, morphological convergence and host distribution. This study is the first phylogeny presented solely for amblyceran genera.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 138 , 39–82.  相似文献

Abstract— A cladistic analysis based on 50 morphological characters was performed for 49 of the 98 species currently assigned to the subclass Palaeonemertea (phylum Nemertea), and six additional undescribed species. Thirty-five species were excluded from the parsimony analysis because of the high number of unknowns in the character matrix, and one species since it was considered a nomen nudum . An initial analysis suggested that the subclass Hoplonemertea is the sistergroup to the clade Palaeo- and Heteronemertea and the ingroup cladograms are rooted using a paraphyletic outgroup based on this information. Seventy-two equally most parsimonious cladograms were found; the consistency index was low but tree-length distribution for the character set is skewed to the left, and the cladograms are invariably shorter than trees based on random data. These cladograms suggested a character transformation series for the cerebral organ where this complex character reappeared several times after being absent. We considered this biologically implausible and the final discussion is based on three cladograms, one step longer than the most parsimonious, where the evolution of this character appears to be more realistic. The cladistic analysis indicates that many previously recognized genera (e.g. Cephalothrix, Procephalothrix and Cephalotrichella ), and higher taxa, are paraphyletic. It furthermore indicates that the previously suggested hypothesis of the Archinemertea as a monophyletic sistertaxon to Palaeonemertea is unsupported.  相似文献
