Abstract.  Bioassays for insecticide resistance in adult mosquitoes were conducted on samples of Anopheles gambiae Giles s.l . (Diptera: Culicidae) species collected as larvae from breeding sites in the lower Shire Valley, Malawi. The results indicate full susceptibility to permethrin, deltamethrin and malathion, but reduced susceptibility to DDT in one sample from Thom (LT50 of 8.39 min for females and 25.09 min for males). Polymerase chain reaction-based species identification of the mosquitoes assayed revealed a mixture of Anopheles arabiensis Patton and Anopheles quadriannulatus (Theobold). The LT50 did not differ significantly between species. Genotyping of the L1014F and L1014S kdr alleles showed all mosquito specimens to be homozygous wild type; thus the reduced susceptibility detected is not attributable to target site insensitivity and instead is likely to be metabolic in nature. Anopheles quadriannulatus is characteristically zoophagic and exophilic. Indeed, of 82 Anopheles collected through knockdown collections within dwellings, only one was An. quadriannulatus and the rest were An. arabiensis . They are unlikely, therefore, to have been exposed to selection pressure arising from insecticide-treated net usage or to DDT indoor residual spraying. Therefore, it is suggested that this example of reduced susceptibility to DDT in An. quadriannulatus reflects selection in the larval stages.  相似文献

The epidemiological role of and control options for any mosquito species depend on its degree of 'anthropophily'. However, the behavioural basis of this term is poorly understood. Accordingly, studies in Zimbabwe quantified the effects of natural odours from cattle and humans, and synthetic components of these odours, on the attraction, entry and landing responses of Anopheles arabiensis Giles (Diptera: Culicidae) and Anopheles quadriannulatus Theobald. The numbers of mosquitoes attracted to human or cattle odour were compared using electrocuting nets (E-nets), and entry responses were gauged by the catch from an odour-baited entry trap (OBET) relative to that from an odour-baited E-net. Landing responses were estimated by comparing the catches from E-nets and cloth targets covered with an electrocuting grid. For An. arabiensis, E-nets baited with odour from a single ox or a single man caught similar numbers, and increasing the dose of human odour from one to three men increased the catch four-fold. For An. quadriannulatus, catches from E-nets increased up to six-fold in the progression: man, three men, ox, and man + ox, with catch being correlated with bait mass. Entry responses of An. arabiensis were stronger with human odour (entry response 62%) than with ox odour (6%) or a mixture of cattle and human odours (15%). For An. quadriannulatus, the entry response was low (< 2%) with both cattle and human odour. Anopheles arabiensis did not exhibit a strong entry response to carbon dioxide (CO2) (0.2-2 L/min). The trends observed using OBETs and E-nets also applied to mosquitoes approaching and entering a hut. Catches from an electrocuting target baited with either CO2 or a blend of acetone, 1-octen-3-ol, 4-methylphenol and 3-n-propylphenol - components of natural ox odour - showed that virtually all mosquitoes arriving there alighted on it. The propensity of An. arabiensis to enter human habitation seemed to be mediated by odours other than CO2 alone. Characterizing 'anthropophily' by comparing the numbers of mosquitoes caught by traps baited with different host odours can lead to spurious conclusions; OBETs baited with human odour caught around two to four times more An. arabiensis than cattle-baited OBETs, whereas a human-baited E-net caught less ( approximately 0.7) An. arabiensis than a cattle-baited E-net. Similar caution is warranted for other species of mosquito vectors. A fuller understanding of how to exploit mosquito behaviour for control and surveys requires wider approaches and more use of appropriate tools.  相似文献

Among the aquatic developmental stages of the Anopheles gambiae complex (Diptera: Culicidae), both inter- and intra-specific interactions influence the resulting densities of adult mosquito populations. For three members of the complex, An. arabiensis Patton, An. quadriannulatus (Theobald) and An. gambiae Giles sensu stricto, we investigated some aspects of this competition under laboratory conditions. First-instar larvae were consumed by fourth-instar larvae of the same species (cannibalism) and by fourth-instar larvae of other sibling species (predation). Even when larvae were not consumed, the presence of one fourth-instar larva caused a significant reduction in development rate of first-instar larvae. Possible implications of these effects for population dynamics of these malaria vector mosquitoes are discussed.  相似文献

Four species of the Anopheles gambiae complex were identified in Mozambique (East Africa) by chromosomal analysis. They were An. merus, An. gambiae s.s., An. arabiensis and An. quadriannulatus. An. merus was observed in coastal zones as well as in inner areas where the rivers are tidal and brackish and/or the soil is salty. An. gambiae s.s. is present in the central-northern regions (north of Save river) from the coast to the western mountains. On the coast it is often sympatric with An. merus. It is apparently absent south of Save river. An. arabiensis was observed in samples from the north-western hilly and mountainous areas, sympatrically with An. gambiae s.s., as well as south of Save river where often it is sympatric with An. merus. Only one specimen of An. quadriannulatus was observed. It was from a small sample collected feeding on bovid in a southern locality (Bela Vista-Maputo area). No inversion polymorphism was observed in the 446 An. merus identified. A quite low degree of inversion polymorphism was shown by both An. gambiae s.s. and An. arabiensis, involving 2Rb, 2La and 2Rb inversion systems respectively. By morphological analysis of cytogenetically identified samples of three species of the complex, number of sensilla coeloconica and palpal ratio were confirmed to be useful to distinguish An. merus from An. gambiae s.s./An. arabiensis. The overlapping areas between brackish and freshwater species become smaller when both characters are considered together, 1.5% and 3.5% being the probabilities of confusing An. merus with An. gambiae s.s. and An. arabiensis respectively.  相似文献

In the Zambezi valley, mosquito females of the Anopheles gambiae Giles complex (Diptera: Culicidae) were collected from a hut containing pairs of cattle distinguishable by known DNA markers. DNA was extracted from the blood-fed mosquito abdomens and primer sets for ungulate and mosquito DNA loci were used to identify the mosquito sibling species and individual host source(s) of their bloodmeals. The 67 mosquitoes comprised a mixture of An. arabiensis Patton (31%) and An. quadriannulatus Theobald (69%). DNA from one or both of the cattle present in the hut was detected in 91% of samples. When the hut contained an adult and a calf, the percentage of bloodmeals from the adult, the calf and adult + calf were 58%, 27% and 15%, respectively; the trend towards meals from the adult host was consistent but not always significant. When the pair of cattle comprised two adults of roughly equal size and age, then mosquitoes generally showed no significant bias towards feeding from one individual. There was no significant difference in the pattern of host selection made by An. arabiensis and An. quadriannulatus but the former had a significantly higher percentage (20%) of mixed meals than An. quadriannulatus (9%). These two members of the An. gambiae complex appear to be less selective in their choice of cattle hosts compared to day-active Diptera such as tsetse and Stomoxys, possibly because the hosts are generally asleep when Anopheles are active and there is therefore less selective pressure to adapt to host defensive behaviour. The slight bias of Anopheles towards older and/or larger cattle may be related to the host's larger surface area.  相似文献

Anopheles gambiae Giles s.s. and Anopheles arabiensis Patton (Diptera: Culicidae) are major vectors of malaria in Nigeria. We used 1115 bp of the mitochondrial COI gene to assess their population genetic structures based on samples from across Nigeria (n = 199). The mtDNA neighbour-joining tree, based on F(ST) estimates, separated An. gambiae M and S forms, except that samples of An. gambiae M from Calabar clustered with all the An. gambiae S form. Anopheles arabiensis and An. gambiae could be combined into a single star-shaped, parsimonious haplotype network, and shared three haplotypes. Haplotype diversity values were high in An. arabiensis and An. gambiae S, and intermediate in An. gambiae M; all nucleotide diversities were relatively low. Taken together, patterns of haplotype diversity, the star-like genealogy of haplotypes, five of seven significant neutrality tests, and the violation of the isolation-by-distance model indicate population expansion in An. arabiensis and An. gambiae S, but the signal was weak in An. gambiae M. Selection is supported as an important factor shaping genetic structure in An. gambiae in Nigeria. There were two geographical subdivisions in An. arabiensis: one included all southern localities and all but two central localities; the other included all northern and two central localities. Re-analysing an earlier microsatellite dataset of An. arabiensis using a Bayesian method determined that there were two distinctive clusters, northern and southern, that were fairly congruent with the mtDNA subdivisions. There was a trend towards decreasing genetic diversity in An. arabiensis from the northern savannah to the southern rainforest that corroborated previous data from microsatellites and polytene chromosomes.  相似文献

Field studies on responses of two mosquito sibling species, Anopheles arabiensis Patton and An. quadriannulatus Theobald, to a man, a calf and different release rates of carbon dioxide (man, calf and cow equivalents) were conducted in north-eastern South Africa. Various combinations of baits were compared in two-choice tests, using two mosquito nets, placed 2.5 m apart and 10 cm off the ground. Mosquitoes attracted to the baits were able to enter the nets from below and were collected by means of a suction tube. In a two-choice test between a man and CO2 (human equivalent, 250 ml/min), 81% of the An. quadriannulatus were caught with CO2. The reverse was seen for An. arabiensis , where only 20% of the total catch was caught with CO2 compared to man. High release rates of CO2 (cow equivalent, 800 ml/min) attracted significantly more An. quadriannulatus than the low release rate (250 ml/min), whereas no significant effect of the release rate of CO2 on the total catch of An. arabiensis was seen. In the latter species, up to 33% of the attraction of human emanation is attributable to carbon dioxide. Anopheles quadriannulatus was equally attracted to a calf and CO2 (calf equivalent, 180 ml/min). Catches of other mosquito species showed consistent differences between all treatments which appear to be associated with differences in host-preference, suggesting that the importance of CO2 in host-seeking behaviour of mosquitoes increases with the degree of zoophily.  相似文献

The strongly anthropophilic behaviour of Anopheles gambiae Giles sensu stricto (Diptera: Culicidae), the most important malaria vector in Africa, has been demonstrated by field and laboratory studies. Other members of the An. gambiae complex express varied degrees of anthropophily. Anopheles quadriannulatus (Theobald) species A and B are more zoophilic members of the complex and hence are considered to be of no medical importance. Olfactometer experiments with An. quadriannulatus species A have demonstrated attraction to both human and cow odour. To extend these olfactometer observations a choice experiment was conducted in an outdoor cage with a human and a calf as baits, using laboratory-reared mosquitoes. Anopheles gambiae s.s. (from Liberia) and two strains of An. quadriannulatus species A (SKUQUA from South Africa, SANGQUA from Zimbabwe), marked with different coloured fluorescent powders for identification purposes, were released simultaneously and given an equal opportunity to feed on either host. The experiment was repeated six times. Bloodmeals were identified using the precipitin technique. Anopheles gambiae s.s. showed highly anthropophagic behaviour, taking 88% of bloodmeals from the human host. In contrast, both strains of An. quadriannulatus fed with equal frequency on the human or the calf; the response to either host was not significantly different. These results confirm the olfactometer findings and demonstrate anthropophagic behaviour not previously recorded in this species. This finding has implications for prospective manipulation of host preference for genetic control purposes.  相似文献

Abstract. For two sibling species of mosquitoes belonging to the Anopheles gambiae complex of malaria vectors, the effects of body size (wing length) and bloodmeal size (haematin excretion) on fecundity of wild females were investigated in The Gambia, West Africa. Freshly blood-fed individuals from sympatric populations of An.arabiensis and An.gambiae sensu stricto were sampled by collection at 07.00–09.00 hours from within bednets during July/August 1993, at the beginning of the rainy season. The possible confounding effect of infection with Plasmodium parasites was removed by eliminating infected mosquitoes from the study samples. An.arabiensis females comprised 75% of the An.gambiae sensu law population and were significantly larger (greater mean wing length) than those of An.gambiae s.s. mosquitoes. Mean egg production per female (for the subsequent gonotrophic cycle, excluding pre-gravids) for the two species was not significantly different, though the relationship between wing length and egg production showed An.gambiae s.s. to be more fecund than the An.arabiensis of the same size. Pre-gravid An.gambiae s.s. had consumed significandy smaller bloodmeals than gravid females but the mean wing length of these two gonotrophic categories was not significantly different. In contrast, An.arabiensis pre-gravids were smaller and had consumed smaller bloodmeals than the gravids.  相似文献

1. Anopheles arabiensis Patton and An. funestus Giles were identified as vectors of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in the Mwea-Tebere irrigation scheme, Kenya. An. arabiensis was the only member of the An. gambiae complex identified from chromosome characteristics. Other Anopheles species found included An. pharoensis Theobald, An. rufipes Gough and An. coustani Laveran. Survival rates per gonotrophic cycle for An. arabiensis averaged 0.37 during the short rains (October-November), 0.49 during the dry season (February) and 0.78 during the long rains (May-June). Vectorial capacities were correspondingly low due to low survival rates and a high degree of zoophily. The average duration of infective life for P. falciparum was 0.2 days for both An. arabiensis and An. funestus. In contrast, entomological inoculation rates were comparatively high: 6-8 infective bites/man/month. An. pharoensis averaged 110 bites/man/night during the short rains; 1/999 (0.1%) was positive by ELISA for P. falciparum circumsporozoite antigen, but the ELISA evidence is not conclusive for vector incrimination. In correspondence with clinical observations, the transmission of P. malariae and P. ovale is unlikely due to the low vector survival rates. The observed anomaly between low vectorial capacities and high entomological inoculation rates demonstrates the importance of accurately estimating vector sporozoite rates to monitor unstable malaria transmission in irrigated areas.  相似文献

Sibling species A and B of Anopheles quadriannulatus (Theobald) are recognized as allopatric members of the Anopheles gambiae Giles complex of Afrotropical mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae). Species A represents An. quadriannulatus sensu stricto, widespread in southern Africa, whereas An. quadriannulatus species B occurs in Ethiopia. Because of difficulty of identification, distribution of An. quadriannulatus sensu lato remains poorly known. Cytotaxonomy and the standard DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay do not distinguish between species A and B of An. quadriannulatus. By optimizing the standard PCR assay (Scott et al., 1993) for identification of members of the An. gambiae complex, we identified two discriminant fragments of 153 bp and 900 bp from DNA of An. quadriannulatus species B, whereas only the 153 bp fragment was amplified for species A from South Africa. This modified PCR assay can therefore be used to distinguish between species A and B of An. quadriannulatus s.l. as well as other members of the An. gambiae complex.  相似文献

Responses of antennal olfactory cells associated with sensilla trichodea were recorded in females of four Anopheles species (Diptera, Culicidae) with different host preferences: the anthropophilic An. gambiae s.s., the opportunistic An. arabiensis, and the zoophilic An. quadriannulatus and An. maculipennis atroparvus. Stimuli were vapours of synthetic host-odours: ethanoic, propanoic, butanoic, 3-methyl propanoic, 4-methyl butanoic acid, 1-octen-3-ol, and 3- and 4-methyl phenol. On stimulation with fatty acids and phenols either excitation or inhibition of spike activity was found, whereas responses to 1-octen-3-ol were invariably excitatory. The odour spectra of the cells could include activating as well as inhibiting substances. Differences in host preferences may be reflected in the numbers of olfactory cells responding to different odours and/or in the sensitivities of these cells. In An. gambiae more cells were excited by fatty acids than in An. arabiensis and An. m. atroparvus, whereas inhibition occurred more often in the latter two species. In addition, the fatty acid-excited cells in An. gambiae were more sensitive to these substances than in An. m. atroparvus and An. quadriannulatus. On the contrary, in the latter two species cells were more responsive to 1-octen-3-ol. In An. arabiensis, responses of stimulus-excited cells were intermediate between those in the anthropophilic and zoophilic species.  相似文献

Variation at 12 microsatellite loci was investigated to assess the impact of the implementation of insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) on the genetic structure of Anopheles arabiensis in Simatou, a village surrounded by irrigated rice fields in the Sahelian area of Cameroon. The An. arabiensis population of Simatou was sampled twice before ITN implementation, and twice after. Effective population size estimates (N(e)) were similar across each time point, except for the period closely following ITN introduction where a nonsignificant reduction was recorded. Hence, we believe that ITN implementation resulted in a temporary bottleneck, rapidly followed by a demographic expansion. The genetic diversity of the population was not significantly affected since different genetic parameters (allele number, observed and expected heterozygosities) remained stable. Low estimates of genetic differentiation between the populations from Simatou and Lagdo, separated by 300 km, suggested extensive gene flow among populations of An. arabiensis in the Sahelian region of Cameroon. A decrease in the susceptibility to deltamethrin was observed following ITN introduction, but no kdr mutation was detected and a metabolic resistance mechanism is probably involved. The temporary effect of ITNs on the genetic structure of An. arabiensis population suggests that, to optimize the success of any control programme of this species based on ITNs, the control area should be very large and the programme should be implemented for a long period of time.  相似文献

A nonradiometric method has been developed for distinguishing between the sibling species Anopheles gambiae Giles and An. arabiensis Patton, two important Afrotropical vectors of malaria. DNA fragments of species diagnostic length are amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from a small amount of unknown DNA and three different PCR primers. All three PCR primers are based on ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequences. A universal plus-strand primer (A0) is derived from a conserved region at the 3' end of the 28S rDNA coding region. Two species-specific minus-strand primers (Aa0.5 and Ag1.3) are derived from sequences in the intergenic spacers. The Ag1.3 sequence is approximately 1.3 kb downstream of A0; the Aa0.5 sequence is about 0.5 kb downstream of A0. When mosquito DNA is amplified in the presence of all three primers, a 1.3 kb fragment is produced if An. gambiae DNA is used as template, and a 0.5 kb fragment is produced if An. arabiensis DNA is used. Amplification of DNA from An.gambiae/An. arabiensis hybrids produces both the 1.3 kb and the 0.5 kb fragments. Neither diagnostic fragment is produced when DNA from other species in the An. gambiae complex is used as template.  相似文献

Abstract. Distribution of biting sites on the human body by the malaria vector Anopheles arabiensis Patton (Diptera: Culicidae) was investigated near a source of mosquitoes in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. Eight adult male volunteers (2 teams × 2 pairs of subjects) conducted human bait collections while seated on camp chairs in the open-air, wearing only short trousers (no shirt, socks or shoes). Mosquito collections during 18.30–22.30 hours on five consecutive nights in April 1998 yielded a total of 679 An. arabiensis females biting subjects with or without their ankles and feet treated with deet insect repellent (15% diethyl-3-methylbenzamide, Tabard™ lotion). On subjects whose feet and ankles were smeared with repellent, 160 An. arabiensis females were captured biting in 60 man-hours: 88.1% on the legs, 1.4% on the arms and 1.2% on other parts of the body, but none on the repellent-treated feet or ankles. On subjects without repellent treatment, 519 An. arabiensis were caught biting in 60 man-hours: 81.1% on feet and ankles, 16.4% on legs, 1.4% on arms and 1.2% on the rest of the body. For individual subjects, the reduction of An. arabiensis bites ranged from 36.4 to 78.2% (mean protection 69.2%). Results of this study confirm previous findings that, in this part of South Africa − inhabited only by wildlife − when people sit outside during the evening An. arabiensis prefers to bite their lower limbs: 97.5% below the knees. Overall, the number of bites by the malaria vector An. arabiensis was reduced more than three-fold (from 26 to 8/person/evening), simply by treating ankles and feet with a consumer brand of deet repellent. Whether or not this provides a satisfactory degree of protection against malaria risk would depend on the malaria sporozoite rate in the malaria vector population.  相似文献

Mosquito larvae of the sibling species Anopheles arabiensis Patton and An. gambiae Giles sensu stricto (Diptera: Culicidae) were investigated for interspecific competition. Single-species and mixed-species populations were reared at 27 degrees C from the first instar to pupation at different densities (100, 200 or 400 larvae/200 cm2 tray) with a constant amount of food, 0.2 mg/larva/day. Pupae obtained from mixed populations were identified to species using PCR. Both species had a 1:1 sex ratio at pupation. Development time to pupation averaged about one day less for An. arabiensis compared to An. gambiae, ranging from 0.93-1.49d for males and from 0.44-0.84 d for females in single populations. In mixed species populations the difference for males ranged from 0.99-1.58d and for females from 0.93-1.62d. Survival rates of An. gambiae s.s. were significantly higher than those of An. arabiensis in both the single-species and mixed-species populations. Mixed-species rearing did not have an effect on the survival of An. gambiae, whereas the mortality rate of An. arabiensis was significantly higher in mixed populations than when only this species was reared at the same densities, suggesting a competitive disadvantage for An. arabiensis in mixed populations. High proportions of larvae (4-35%) were lost during development; these losses could not be accounted for by corpses found in the rearing pans. The possibility of cannibalism was investigated by rearing each species separately in small containers (five per 50 ml), inspected every 6h, but no cannibalism was detected at any stage of development in either species. It was concluded that, under these experimental circumstances, interspecific competition between both species did occur but with a detrimental effect on An. arabiensis only. Relevance of these findings to the ecology of both species in the field is discussed briefly.  相似文献

Three commercial repellents marketed in South Africa: Bio-Skincare (BSC, oils of coconut, jojoba, rapeseed and vitamin E), Mosiguard towelletes with 0.574 g quwenling (p-menthane-3,8-diol, PMD) and the standard deet (15% diethyl-3-methylbenzamide, Tabard lotion), were compared against a laboratory colony of the mosquito Anopheles arabiensis Patton (Diptera: Culicidae), the predominant malaria vector in South Africa. Human forearms were treated with 1.2 g BSC, 0.8 g PMD towelette or 0.5 g deet and exposed to 200 hungry An. arabiensis females for 1 min, at intervals of 1-6 h post-treatment. Tests were conducted by three adult male volunteers (aged 30-45 years, crossover controlled test design for 3 consecutive days), using their left arm for treatment and right arm for untreated control. Biting rates averaged 39-52 bites/min on untreated arms. All three repellents provided complete protection against An. arabiensis for up to 3-4 h post-application; deet and PMD gave 90-100% protection up to 5-6h, but BSC declined to only 52% protection 6h post-treatment. These results are interpreted to show that all three repellent products give satisfactory levels of personal protection against An. arabiensis for 4-5 h, justifying further evaluation in the field.  相似文献

The species composition of malaria vector mosquitoes belonging to the Anopheles gambiae complex (Diptera: Culicidae) from >40 localities in Sudan, representing most ecological situations, was determined by analysis of ovarian polytene chromosomes. Of 2162 females, 93% were identified as An. arabiensis Patton and 7% were An. gambiae Giles sensu stricto. No hybrids were found between the two species. Anopheles arabiensis occurred in all but two sites, whereas An. gambiae s.s. was effectively limited to the southernmost, more humid localities. For chromosomal paracentric inversions, the degree of polymorphism was low in An. gambiae s.s. (inversions 2La, 2Rb and 2Rd), higher in An. arabiensis (inversions Xe, 2Ra, b, bc, d1, s; 3Ra, d). Anopheles gambiae samples from Sudan were all apparently panmictic, i.e. they did not show restricted gene flow such as observed among West African populations (interpreted as incipient speciation). Chromosomal inversion patterns of An. gambiae in southern Sudan showed characteristics of intergrading Savanna/Forest populations similar to those observed in comparable eco-climatic situations of West Africa. Anopheles arabiensis was polymorphic for inversion systems recorded in West Africa (2Ra, 2Rb, 2Rdl, 3Ra) and for a novel 2Rs polymorphism, overlapping with inversion systems 2Rb and 2Rd1. Samples carrying the 2Rs inversion were mostly from Khashm-el-Girba area in central-eastern Sudan. In the great majority of the samples all polymorphic inversions were found to be in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Sudan populations of An. arabiensis should therefore be considered as generally panmictic. Anopheles arabiensis shows more inversion polymorphism in west than in east African populations. Sudan populations have more evident similarities with those from westwards than those from eastwards of the Great Rift Valley. The possible influence of the Rift on evolution of An. arabiensis is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. Differential responses of the mosquitoes Anopheles arabiensis and An. gambiae sensu stricto to house-spraying with DDT or lambda-cyhalothrin were evaluated in relation to chromosomal inversion polymorphism, feeding and resting behaviour of these malaria vectors in Tanzania. Blood-fed mosquitoes from pit traps outdoors, exit traps on windows and indoor-resting catches were identified cytogenetically and the chromosomal inversion frequencies compared between samples and species. Their outdoor-resting behaviour was assessed by a mark–release–recapture experiment and by determining the proportion of freshly blood-fed individuals in exit traps. The source of bloodmeals was analysed by an ELISA method. Endophagic females of An. arabiensis were more likely than those of An. gambiae to exit from a house on the night of blood-feeding. Only in one out of three villages was there evidence that chromosomally distinct individuals within a species had different preferences for resting sites. There were indications, but not conclusive evidence, that mosquitoes caught indoors or outdoors had a tendency to return to the same type of resting site. In villages sprayed with either insecticide, the mean age of the vector populations was greatly reduced, compared with those in the unsprayed villages. An. arabiensis females exited from DDT sprayed houses after blood-feeding, whereas with lambda-cyhalothrin those exiting were mostly unfed and there was a decline in the human blood index. The excitorepellency of DDT was perceived as a disadvantage, whereas lambda-cyhalothrin apparently had more impact on malaria transmission by An. arabiensis.  相似文献
