The predation impact of the larvae of pond smelt Hypomesus transpacificus nipponensis on a zooplankton community was studied using mesocosms. The fish significantly depressed the abundances of copepod nauplii and rotifers, especially Hexarthra mira. The vulnerabilities of these prey might be determined by their swimming behavior and population density, suggesting that larval fish selectively prey on zooplankton that have a high encounter rate with the predator. The larvae did not have a negative effect on the densities of cladocerans, but fish predation altered the cladoceran community structure from the dominance of B. longirostris to that of B. fatalis. This result suggests that larval fish predation is an important factor that shifts the species composition of Bosmina in some lakes, the shift occurring in the season when fish larvae are abundant. Our results have shown that predation by the larval fish would control not only the abundance, but also the community structure of the small-sized zooplankton prey.  相似文献

Indirect effects of fish on the demographic parameters of cladoceran species were studied under eutrophic conditions. Laboratory experiments were performed with water from control and fish mesocosms to avoid the direct impact of fish predation. In the experiments with the water from the fish mesocosms, fish indirectly negatively affected the demographic parameters of large cladocerans (Daphnia magna and D. pulicaria) due to the enhanced abundance of blue-green algae in the phytoplankton. However, small Ceriodaphnia quadrangula and littoral species Simocephalus vetulus did not respond to the presence of blue-greens. Due to this mechanism, the total abundance of cladoceran species can be sustained during the development of blue-green algae because large and small bodied species differ in their resistence to high concentratons of blue-green algae. Fish chemical signals (kairomones) did not influence the demographic parameters of any cladoceran species.  相似文献

Summary Field distribution patterns and laboratory feeding experiments have suggested that blooms of colonial blue-green algae strongly inhibit relatively large-bodied daphnid cladocerans. We conducted laboratory experiments to test the hypothesis that blooms of the colonial blue-green alga Microcystis aeruginosa would shift competitive dominance away from large-bodied daphnid cladocerans toward smaller-bodied cladocerans, copepods, and rotifers. In laboratory competition experiments, increasing the proportion of M. aeruginosa in the algal food supply resulted in a shift from dominance by the relatively largebodied cladoceran Daphnia ambigua to dominace by the copepod Diaptomus reighardi. The small-bodied cladoceran Bosmina longirostris was always numerically heavily dominant over D. ambigua, but its estimated population biomasses were only slightly higher than those of D. ambigua. Daphnia ambigua consistently outcompeted the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus. Our results demonstrate that blooms of M. aeruginosa can alter zooplankton competitive relations in laboratory experiments, favoring small-bodied cladocerans and copepods at the expense of large-bodied cladocerans. However, contrary to predictions, blooms of M. aeruginosa did not improve the competitive ability of rotifers.  相似文献

The forage base and the food selectivity of 0+ representatives of six abundant freshwater fish species were studied in a shallow, eutrophic Dutch lake. Most species relied on the zooplankton; the size-selective predation in early summer was directed to the smaller copepods and in late summer to larger cladocerans and copepods than concurrently present in the lake. Daphnia spp. and cyclopoid copepods were the main zooplankton taxa for smelt, perch and pikeperch. Energetically, the large cladoceran, Leptodora kindtii, was especially important for pikeperch. Bream and roach preyed upon smaller zooplankton than the other fish species. The influence of the zooplankton predation by abundant 0+ fish was clear from a small mean Daphnia size in September; this size is to be used as an indicator in fishery management. Neomysis integer, the most important macrofauna species, was consumed by perch, pikeperch and ruffe; pikeperch was most size-selective in this respect. The 0+ ruffe was à typically benthivorous fish. Only the 0+ pikeperch became piscivorous, especially in years when smelt was abundant.  相似文献

We investigated the behaviour and life histories of large zooplankton in the Esch-sur-Sûre reservoir (Luxembourg). We found that the decrease in size at maturity, as well as diurnal refuge in deep waters, were the adaptive responses (concurrently or alternatively) adopted by large zooplankters to cope with the increasing predation risk throughout the summer. Daphnia galeata initiated a more severe trade-off to cope with high summer predation relative to other cladoceran species. Diaphanosoma brachyurum and Daphnia cucullata seem less susceptible to fish predation as indicated by the low alteration of their size structure and their vertical distribution. The copepod Eudiaptomus gracilis took refuge in deep waters and achieved important modifications of its mature size.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine how zebra mussels affected cladoceran community structure under eutrophic conditions. We conducted a mesocosm study where we manipulated the presence of zebra mussels and the presence of large-bodied Daphnia (Daphnia magna and Daphnia pulicaria). We also conducted a complimentary life-table experiment to determine how water from the zebra mussel treatment affected the life history characteristics of the cladoceran species. We anticipated that small- and large-bodied cladoceran species would respond differently to changes in algal quality and quantity under the effects of zebra mussels. Large-bodied Daphnia successfully established in the zebra mussel treatment but failed to grow in the control. We did not observe positive relationships between food concentrations and cladoceran abundances. However, the phosphorus content in the seston indicated that food quality was below the threshold level for large-bodied cladocerans at the beginning of the experiment. We believe that zebra mussels quickly enhanced the phosphorus content in the seston due to the excretion of inorganic phosphorus, thus facilitating the development of large-bodied Daphnia. In conclusion, our results suggest that zebra mussels can alter the phosphorus content of seston in lakes and this can affect the dynamics of crustacean zooplankton.  相似文献

Our observations indicate the vertical distribution of zooplankton and its seasonal changes in Dubník II reservoir (Slovakia) are determined mainly by the thermal regime of the reservoir, by transparency, and by fish and invertebrate predation. During periods of circulation, zooplankton vertical distribution in the whole water column was more homogeneous, whilst during summer temperature stratification zooplankton concentrated in the epilimnion — rotifers in higher layers than crustaceans. During summer stagnation a steep thermal gradient occurred at the boundary of the epi-and hypolimnion and low temperature and low dissolved oxygen in hypolimnion offered a refuge for Chaoborus flavicans larvae against fish, enabling coexistence of vertebrate and invertebrate predation. This evidence supports our previous findings concerning dominance of rotifers in zooplankton and representation of crustaceans by small-bodied species in the study reservoir. Steep thermal gradient and the presence of Chaoborus larvae caused very low zooplankton abundance in the lower part of the water column and a reduction of cladocerans refuges against fish to layers of thermocline or closely under thermocline where Daphnia cucullata and Daphnia parvula were found. Our previous assumptions about the high density of zooplanktivorous fish in Dubník II reservoir are supported by the fact that these small cladocerans are represented by smaller individuals in the upper layers and bigger individuals in deeper layers.  相似文献

In the shallow and eutrophic subtropical aquatic ecosystems, which it generally inhabits, the omnivorous copepod Mesocyclops thermocyclopoides encounters a wide variety of animal prey types including ciliates, rotifers, and cladocerans. We studied prey selectivity in laboratory-reared adult females of this species given a choice of (i) prey types belonging to different taxa (ciliates, rotifers, cladocerans, and cyclopoid nauplii), and (ii) different prey species within a taxonomic group differing in body size, morphology or behaviour. We also tested the effect of different proportions of prey species on its selectivity. Prey type proportion had no significant effect on selectivity of the copepod, nor was there any evidence of switching based on the relative abundance of prey. Among the ciliate prey species tested, the largest species, Stylonychia mytilus was positively selected regardless of its relative abundance, while the smallest, S. notophora was selected only when its density was higher. Offered a choice of three species of a brachionid rotifer differing in size, the copepod selected the largest of them, Brachionus calyciflorus, and avoided the smallest B. angularis. The evasive rotifer Hexarthra mira was also avoided. When prey choice included three cladoceran species Daphnia similoides, Moina macrocopa and Ceriodaphnia cornuta, the copepod selected the intermediate-sized M. macrocopa regardless of the abundance of the other two species. Although it fed on Mesocyclops nauplii when there was no choice, M. thermocyclopoides avoided them when alternative food was available. In a multispecies prey choice test, the copepod selected predominantly the rotifer B. calyciflorus and the cladoceran M. macrocopa. We suggest that the prey selectivity patterns shown by M. thermocyclopoides are adaptive in that they lead to ingestion of the most profitable prey.  相似文献

The behavioural response of Daphnia cucullata to the presence of the pelagic invertebrate predator Leptodora kindtii, and the predation rate of littoral dragonfly nymphs on this species were investigated under laboratory conditions. Results of this study revealed a strong hiding response of Daphnia cucullata in the presence of the predatory cladoceran, L. kindtii, which was similar to the response of Daphnia in the presence of juvenile perch. This suggests that pelagic invertebrate predators may cause Daphnia to hide in the littoral zone which could result in increased exposure to predation by littoral invertebrates. A strong influence of dragonfly nymphs on D. cucullata, both in the presence and absence of macrophytes, was found. The average predation rate of Odonata larvae was about 5 prey ind–1 h–1 and did not differ significantly between treatments. Quantification of dragonfly pressure on Daphnia populations will require cross‐verification with field experiments since in the natural conditions Daphnia seeks a shelter in the vegetation stands against predation by Leptodora, despite the occurrence of odonates. The impact of Pseudorasbora parva, a common zooplanktivorous fish species in Japan, on a zooplankton community was analyzed in experimental tanks, half of which were stocked with the fish. Different zooplankton species showed different responses to the introduction of the fish. In the presence of the fish, the populations of the large cladoceran Ceriodaphnia and the predatory copepod Mesocyclops were reduced, but the population of the herbivorous copepod Eodiaptomus and the small cladocerans Bosmina fatalis and Bosminopsis deitersi increased relative to the controls. The increase of Mesocyclops seen in the control tanks might have suppressed the populations of the small cladocerans, which are vulnerable to invertebrate predation. The results suggest that the population densities of the large prey items preferred by the fish, Ceriodaphnia and Mesocyclops, were controlled directly by fish predation, but the population densities of the smaller and less preferred zooplankton were controlled indirectly through the food-web cascade.  相似文献

The results of cladoceran crustaceans studies in the pelagial of the Ivankovo and Uglich water reservoirs were generalized. In the period of 1973–1995, both waterbodies were similar in terms of Cladocera species composition and the dominating complex. The list of species composition of pelagic cladocerans has increased since the 1950s. The highest abundance of cladocerans was observed in the Ivankovo water reservoir. Daphnia cucullata G. Sars has been stably dominant in zooplankton summary biomass, while Chydorus sphaericus (O.F. Müller) and Bosmina longirostris (O.F. Müller) prevailed in terms of abundance. Changes in the pelagic cladoceran complex composition is evidence of the waterbodies’ eutrophication. The share of Cladocera in the zooplankton’s total summer biomass was 68 and 53% in the Ivankovski and Shoshinski stretches of the Ivankovo water reservoir, correspondingly, and 60% in the Uglich water reservoir (on average for 1970s–1990s).  相似文献

The planktonic rotifer Brachionus rubens has a propensity for an epizoic mode of life, and in nature is often found attached to cladocerans. In this way the rotifer avoids to a certain extent the adverse effects of interference competition with cladocerans. We test the hypothesis that the epizoic habit of B. rubens acts also as a deterrent against invertebrate predation. Using Asplanchna intermedia as predator, we followed the population growth patterns of B. rubens alone and in the presence of the host species Daphnia carinata and Ceriodaphnia rigaudi. In the absence of cladocerans, the prey was eliminated within three days, followed by extinction of the predator due to starvation. With D. carinata in the medium, the prey-predator system persisted much longer, with B. rubens reaching high population densities. With the smaller-sized C. rigaudi, allowing a significantly smaller fraction of B. rubens population to be epizoic, the system persisted longer than in the controls, but both the prey and predator eventually became extinct. We conclude that the epizoic habit of B. rubens, by acting as a prey refugium, helps a portion of the population to escape from predation, and facilitates its coexistence with Asplanchna intermedia.  相似文献

The traditional view of predaceous zooplankton is that they prefer small-bodied prey, are hindered by morphological anti-predator defenses, and have a minor influence on zooplankton communities when fish are present. We performed a series of experiments with the large-bodied onychopod (cladoceran) Bythotrephes cederstroemi, in which we incubated this predator with known prey to determine prey preference and predation rates. We also performed an allozyme analysis of prey tissue in the gut of B. cederstroemi collected from several stations around Lake Michigan to determine what prey types are chosen in the field. We found that B. cederstroemi does not fit the standard invertebrate predator mold: adult B. cederstroemi prefer large (>2.0 mm) Daphnia pulicaria over smaller individuals; the elongated tailspine and helmet of Daphnia galeata mendotae are not effective deterrents to B. cederstroemi predation; and B. cederstroemi is a generalist predator with the potential to consume a significant portion of cladoceran production in Lake Michigan. Morphological variation in Daphnia cucullata Sars was studied from 1994 to 2001 when fast increasing water trophy of the Siemianówka Reservoir was related to high TP and chlorophyll concentrations. During this period, D. cucullata biomass, as well as its contribution to the total cladocerans biomass clearly decreased. We found that among the six morphological parameters analyzed in D. cucullata, body length, height of the head and length of the tail spine had a tendency to decrease. The maximum values of these traits and carapace length also decreased. The morphology of D. cucullata appeared to be influenced by factors such as food availability, fish predation and an exclusive presence of D. cucullata among Daphniidae species. Increased water mixing in the reservoir may have also affected the changes in the head inclination of D. cucullata.  相似文献

We analysed the spatio-temporal distribution of zooplankton along a profile of 10 stations from the shore to the pelagic zone from April to September 1988, the period when the larvae and juveniles Rutilus rutilus, the most abundant species in the Lake, are in the littoral zone. The digestive tracts of the young roach were analysed. They fed essentially on rotifers and on cladocerans. For comparison, zooplankton was also analysed at one littoral area without fish fry. There was an increase of cladoceran density from the vegetated nearshore zone to the offshore zone. Considering the density of Bosmina longirostris, Daphnia longispina, Chydorus sphaericus and Ceriodaphnia quadrangula, we observed a different distribution pattern in the course of the year. In the nearshore zone, the relative abundance of small species, Bosmina and Chydorus, was much higher than that of the larger Daphnia. From April to September, predation pressure mainly affected the smallest species: in contrast to the inshore station without fish fry, the density of Bosmina decreased in May in the littoral with fish. Chydorus was concentrated in the littoral between February and April, then grew into the pelagic zone, where predation pressure obviously was low during the warm season. The number of Daphnia, which was eaten by the fish fry at any time, remained low in the nearshore zone, which suggests that the presence of fish may cause Daphnia to avoid this zone. Ceriodaphnia which was not affected by this predation, was scarce in the nearshore zone during mid-summer. The low density of the cladocerans in the nearshore zone is likely associated with vertebrate predation by roach fry and juveniles, the result of such a process being either a depletion in density of the prey, or an avoidance behaviour.  相似文献

The interactions between the higher trophic levels in a shallow eutrophic lake were studied during the course of a year. Three fish species determined the main pathways of organic matter flow within the system: the predominantly planktivorous bream (Abramis brama), the obligate planktivorous smelt (Osmerus eperlanus), and the piscivorous pikeperch (Stizostedion lucioperca). Of the thirteen common zooplankton taxa Daphnia hyalina and cyclopoid copepods were utilized most by the planktivorous fish, while the large production of small cladocerans is almost left unutilized.The seasonal variations of production and consumption are large. This is mainly affected by seasonal variation of the water temperature. The production of O + smelt is efficiently utilized by the pikeperch. Being the most important zooplankton consumer, as well as the most important prey group, O + fish plays a key role in the Tjeukemeer food web.  相似文献

Seasonal fishing moratorium with selective fish harvesting is a common means of increasing fish production in Asia. Such manipulation might be expected to lead to a seasonal variation in abundance and composition of fish and predation pressure on zooplankton, and consequently a seasonal change in the Cladocera populations. In this study, we examined the seasonal dynamics of cladocerans in a subtropical plateau lake in southwestern China, Lake Erh, in which a fishing moratorium was implemented in spring and early summer. Cladocerans showed a bimodal seasonal distribution linked to variations in predation pressure induced by the seasonal fishing moratorium. When predation was low in winter because of cool water temperatures and decreasing fish density, Daphnia galeata appeared in the water column and increased towards spring. The cladoceran peaked in the middle of the fishing moratorium, coinciding with a clear water phase. The feeding rate increased with temperature in the late moratorium, allowing planktivorous fish to strongly suppress large daphnids. Small cladocerans benefited from the reduced competition with large daphnids by increasing their numbers rapidly, which resulted in a second peak of cladocerans in the fishing season.  相似文献
